Stay away from yoga camps: Cut off your nose to spite your neighbour’s faith!

By Maulana Nadeem-ul-Wajidee

Translated from Urdu by Syed Raihan Ahmad Nezami

“Yoga is not prohibited.”

The news is published in the newspapers with the reference to some of the renowned Islamic scholars.

In the opinion of the Maulana Waheedud-Deen Khan, “only the positive side of anything should be considered, not the negative side-that is against the spirit of Islam”.

According to him, “The survival of life is based on the realities and truth, ignoring its life cannot be led successfully. Yoga is an exercise so it should be considered with this point of view.”  As it is his habit, he has transferred this trifling matter into a philosophy. How can one believe that Yoga is such a great necessity and reality of life that the existence of life is not possible without it?

As far as this opinion of Maulana Waheedud-Deen Khan is concerned-that the positive points of anything should be considered, not the negative side, this theory cannot be applied to everything. On certain occasions, in certain things, the negative side is more important and so the positive side is ignored.

For example, in Islam, alcohol and gambling are banned on the basis of its negative effects notwithstanding the positive side of its benefit and profits.

I do accept that yoga is a kind of exercise and many physical disabilities and diseases can be cured by the function of right breathing, rhythmic physical movements and by meditation. Unfortunately, in recent times, it is being associated as a symbol of a particular religion. The way some of the communal organizations have introduced yoga in recent years and the way it is being propagated by the “Aastha” channel for the global recognition, forces us to feel that it is being publicized as an integral part of the life of a particular religion.

Baba Ramdev, who is travelling far and wide for the attainment of this purpose, is busy with full zeal and energy in the publicity of his religion as well, though he imparts yoga lessons as well. One can watch his programme on the “Aastha” channel where he keeps on reciting the “shlokas” of the Hindu scriptures and talking about the Hindu gods and goddesses and makes the audience repeat the word “Om” time and again during his endless long speeches.

Actually, by laying emphasis on the word “Om”, he wants the audience to believe that the effectiveness in the physical exercises and meditation comes from the recitation of this word from Hindu scripture. If he is a genuine well-wisher of the nation and wants his countrymen to lead a healthy life without any discrimination of caste, creed and religion, he should not use his yoga camps for the propaganda and publicity of his religion and stop this absurd activity immediately.

He looks more like a representative and mouth-piece of the Hindu religion and less a scholar of Ved Shashtra – that is quite clear from the vast support he is obtaining from the fundamentalist and communal outfits like the RSS. Quite often he looks like a fanatic sycophant and mentally sick person.

His poisonous feelings and ugly design were obviously exposed when he attended the final of a musical reality show as a judge – where his speech based on the denouncement of terrorism spoiled the fun of the whole show of the entertaining programme. Not contented with this he went to deplore and condemn terrorism by naming Muslims and Islam. After this, no one should have any doubt and dare to call him a well-wisher of the nation and the community that he always propagates himself to be and is being labelled also by some filthy minds.

The yoga camps organized by Baba Ramdev are being used for the publicity of the medicines being produced in his pharmacy that’s why he talks less about the physical training and mental peace and more about his products. Apparently he claims that pure herbs are used in the medicines but this far from the reality.

In 2005, a bitter incident took place when about 1500 employees of his pharmacy were dismissed. A great hue and cry was raised by the communist leader Brinda Karat. Later, she went to Haridwar for the talks with the authorities and came to know from the dismissed employees that they were dismissed as they had opposed to mix the powder of human and animal limbs in the medicines. This accusation was found correct when Brinda Karat got the samples of the medicines examined.

The central minister A. Ramadoss had also mentioned in an interview at that occasion, “The sign of human and animal bones and limbs are found in the samples of the medicines examined.”

In this connection, the famous Ayurveda scholar Dr. R .P. Prashar says, “In Ayurvedic literature, some medicines are mentioned in which the powder of the human and animal bones and limbs are used. So, Ayurveda should not be considered as limited to the herbs only”.

Can it be believed that the body parts of the “Halal” animals only are being mixed in the medicines produced in the pharmacy of Babaji?

As an assumption, in case, the body parts of “Halal” animals alone are used even then, what is the guarantee that the animals are sacrificed in the proper Islamic way? In the light of the facts given, can the Muslims be given full liberty to use such doubtful medicines?

In my opinion, the Muslims should not be allowed to participate in the yoga camps of Baba Ramdev and use the medicines being produced in his pharmacy. The participation is the yoga camp may be good for the physical fitness and charm but its negative side-effects on the Faith can’t be ignored.

Generally, the people, who are unaware of the Islamic teachings about health and fitness, are inclined towards yoga. Harqul, the Emperor of Rome, had sent an expert doctor/physician to the prophet Hazrat Muhammad (peace be upon him) so that he should stay in Medina Monawwarah to treat the ailing people. It is narrated in the history books, the doctor stayed there for a month but not a single patient contacted him. Ultimately, in distress, he appeared before the prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) and said, “O, Messenger of the Almighty Allah Kareem, what is the reason that the people of Medina Monawwarah don’t fall sick so they don’t need a doctor?

Obviously, for the perfect physical growth and the attainment of complete physical fitness, the things or the actions which were taught to the Sahaba Karam (May the Almighty Allah Kareem be Agreed with them) during their spiritual training and Islamic learning are responsible for it. After the infinite treasure of “Eman” the healthy body is the greatest gift “Ne’mat” of the Almighty Allah Kareem to the people.

According to a “Rewayat” the prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) asserted:

“The one among you who greeted the dawn of the day with his family and children in peace, his body is in perfect condition, if he has the food for the day also, the entire world is gathered for him”.

(Saheeh Muslim Part-4 Page 252, Al-Hadeeth 2664, printed in Beirut)

According to another Hadeeth Shareef, “The stronger Muslim (Momin) is better than the weak Muslim (Momin) and is more favourite near the Almighty Allah Kareem, and the welfare is in everything”.

(Saheeh Bukhari, Parat-7, Page 218, Hadeeth 6412)

According to one more Hadeeth Shareef, “Two gifts of the Almighty Allah Kareem are such as many people are ignorant to them i.e. “Health and Leisure”.

(Saheeh Bukhari, Parat-7, Page 218, Hadeeth 6412)

With the above-mentioned Ahadeeth Shareef, it is crystal clear that health is a great gift and the precious “Ne’mat” of the Almighty Allah Kareem for the people of the world. So the people must safe-guard it.

The prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon Him), the messenger of the Almighty Allah Kareem not only enlightened the souls of the Sahaba-e-Karam (May the Almighty Allah Kareem be Agreed with them) with the Islamic teachings, spiritual and worldly learning but also, He (Peace be upon Him) cared a lot for the physical training and fitness efforts. For the attainment of the same, He (Peace be upon Him) ordered the five practices being given below.

Complete and balanced diet

Physical cleanliness and purity

Physical exercise

Preventive measures

Use of medicines in illness

A man can be perfectly healthy and fit if he leads his life in the light of above teachings of the prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon Him), these were the hidden secrets adopted by the Sahaba-e-Karam (May the Almighty Allah Kareem be Agreed with them) which helped them to maintain their perfect health and peace of mind throughout their lives so they (May the Almighty Allah Kareem be Agreed with them) rarely needed a doctor. That’s why the doctor was ultimately forced to return from Medina Monawwarah dejected and depressed after a patient wait for the sick people for a month.

Now, it’s a bare truth, if the Muslims follow the Islamic rules to maintain their good health, there is no question that they need to visit Baba Ramdev’s yoga camps  and accept his discipleship.

It doesn’t mean that yoga exercises are against Islam, absolutely not, but the ways and means adopted by Baba Ramdev for the physical exercise are, of course, against Islam.

The Muslims must abstain from it as the Faith cannot be endangered for the sake of physical fitness. After all, the protection of Faith is more important than the health and the physical beauty.

  • A question for all good Muslims on this page-

If a person who claims to be a Muslim, will he remain  a Muslim after he calls for abrogation or rendering certain verses in the Quran as not applicable anymore and refer to the SURAS as redundant and obsolete? (Nausbillah) Such a Muslim is only someone in disguise of a Muslim or he is simply plain ignorant of the very basic qualification and faith needed to be a Muslim. I am not hinting that any Mullah should come out with a fatwa that such a person ceases to be a Muslim and to proclaim him as Kafir, The question is whether he ever was a Muslim? When He Never understood the simple tenets of Islam and repeatedly gave this blasphemous call of abrogating certain verses from the holy Quran which he feels are useless (Nausbillah). Well such a person is none other than Sultan Shahin editor of this site Newageislam.com, it is my sincere call to all Muslims on this site to ignore every  other discussion on this page for the time being and confront this Man Sultan Shahin and ask him to recall his blasphemous and anti Islam article available on this site or he should except that he is not at all a Muslim,  as he has been claiming all this while, I personally feel that any Muslim who read his article and moves on without raising a voice against it, is somewhere unintentionally becoming a part of  Sultan Shahin’s Blasphemous call for abrogating or declaring obsolete certain verses of the holy Quran. Quran Majeed is the word of ALLAH SwT and Flawless in all aspects just as ALLAH SwT himself and any MUSLIM who finds faults with the word of ALLAH SwT can be anyone but not a MUSLIM.

    A Spiritual Note

    Edition 189 - January 30, 2009 - Safar 3, 1430

Assalamu Alaikum (peace be upon you).

    Nederlandse vertaling onderaan

A Jew's prayer for the children of Gaza

"If there has ever been a time for prayer, this is that time.

If there has ever been a place forsaken, Gaza is that place.

Lord Who is the creator of all children; hear our prayer this accursed day. God Whom we call Blessed, turn your face to these, the children of Gaza, that they may know your blessings, and your shelter, that they may know light and warmth, where there is now only blackness and smoke, and a cold which cuts and clenches the skin.

Almighty Who makes exceptions, which we call miracles, make an exception of the children of Gaza. Shield them from us and from their own. Spare them. Heal them. Let them stand in safety. Deliver them from hunger and horror and fury and grief. Deliver them from us, and from their own.

Restore to them their stolen childhoods, their birthright, which is a taste of heaven.

Remind us, O Lord, of the child Ishmael, who is the father of all the children of Gaza. How the child Ishmael was without water and left for dead in the wilderness of Beer-Sheba, so robbed of all hope, that his own mother could not bear to watch his life drain away.

Be that Lord, the God of our kinsman Ishmael, who heard his cry and sent His angel to comfort his mother Hagar.

Be that Lord, who was with Ishmael that day, and all the days after. Be that God, the All-Merciful, who opened Hagar's eyes that day, and showed her the well of water, that she could give the boy Ishmael to drink, and save his life.

Allah, whose name we call Elohim, Who gives life, Who knows the value and the fragility of every life, send these children your angels. Save them, the children of this place, Gaza the most beautiful, and Gaza the damned.

In this day, when the trepidation and rage and mourning that is called war, seizes our hearts and patches them in scars, we call to you, the Lord whose name is Peace:

Bless these children, and keep them from harm.

Turn Your face toward them, O Lord. Show them, as if for the first time, light and kindness, and overwhelming graciousness.

Look up at them, O Lord. Let them see your face.

And, as if for the first time, grant them peace."

    Understanding the Muslim Mind

    Author: Dr Omar Zia

    URL: http://www.islam-watch.org/Omar.Zia/Understanding-the-Muslim-Mind.htm

    29 Jan, 2009

Continuing with my last topic of evolution, or lack thereof, in a Muslim mind, let me give you three real-life examples of how I observed Islam’s toxic effect on the mind of Muslims and how, in my view, they will effect the world around us in the foreseeable future.

    1.      Mind of a Sri Lankan Muslim

Two years ago while travelling through Sri Lanka I befriended a taxi driver in Colombo.

He was a young devout Muslim from a family of ten: two aged parents and eight grown-up children. He was the youngest member of the family born and bred in Sri Lanka. From my chats with him during several excursions in the city, I pieced together a detailed picture of the conditions and aspirations of Muslims in Sri Lanka.

Muslims constituted only 7% of the population in Sri Lanka. This boy of 22 knew that. He told me in a meaningful way that non-Muslim Sri Lankans are too cautious when it comes to raising a family. They worry about the education and upbringing of their offspring too much; for that reason, birth-rate amongst non-Muslims is quite low. Muslims in Sri Lanka, on the other hand, believe that Allah will provide everything and do not care how many children they have. This boy was prophetic. Current Muslim population of Sri Lanka is listed as 9% according to many guide-books.

Upon my enquiry as to how he got along with his non-Muslim neighbours, he praised them for their placidity and then complained that he found it quite annoying that Muslims had to take their cowardly neighbour religious sensitivity into account and slaughter animals hidden from the public eye. He assured me that as soon as Muslims were in ascendancy in his country, which, he was sure, would happen in his lifetime, one of the first laws to be passed will be sanctioning of slaughtering of animals in the open, like in any Muslim country. While visiting Hindu temples with me, he proudly informed me that Muslims never allow non-Muslim Sri Lankans to enter mosques, as they were unclean. He was also quite sure that if allowed, Muslims being the worthy fighters and jihadis, can sort out the Tamils within a very short time.

In order to understand better the Muslim society in Sri Lanka, I even accepted his offer of a cuppa at his house towards the end of my stay.  All that I had heard from this young ‘time bomb’ proved absolutely certain. Indeed, the visit proved even more shocking: the rest of his family members appeared even more radicalized and angrier at their majority countrymen. I felt absolutely horrified at the prospect of what is in store for the affable, but oblivious to danger, non-Muslim Sri Lankans.

    2. Mind of my young, ambitious nephew

On my last visit to Pakistan, my 18 year nephew visited me and implored to arrange a visa for him to go to England. He was close to completing his schooling but was quite despondent of his future prospects in Pakistan. I explained to him that even though I will endeavour to help him all I can, the final word would rest with the British consulate and it would be his academic records, which, in the end, would decide his fate. My motive was to inspire him to study harder as he seemed quite lacking in knowledge for his age. I also told him that he would have to supplement his studies in England with menial jobs. He seemed absolutely comfortable with that news.

As I was once analyzing a disturbing verse from the Quran (9:29), he arrived. I decided to test him on his humanity and asked if he had ever read Quran. He proudly replied that he had, several times, but only in Arabic and therefore did not understand any of it. I explained the verse to him and asked for his thoughts on this fascist verse. Without any hesitation, he responded that he absolutely believes it is correct. Upon my flustered query as to how can he think of subjugating or killing his hosts in England, he replied to my astonishment that once Islam has overwhelmed England, this verse would become mandatory and Allah’s deed must be carried out. I couldn’t help but feel awed at the corrupting power of Islam.

    3. Mind of my educated, progressive, and nonreligious Muslim brother

The third incident, which I wish to relate, came soon after the above incidence during a dinner chat with my progressive, highly educated and largely non-religious brother. I was lamenting to him at the Taliban’s tactics of usurping power in Pakistan. He coolly informed me that Taliban are good people except that they have interpreted Islam wrongly and all true Muslims harbour a Taliban within them. Much shocked at this statement, I asked him to show me what part Taliban had misinterpreted from the Quran. Noticing that he was attempting to change the subject, I persisted and asked him if he had read the Quran with the understanding of it meaning. Not surprisingly, the answer was a somewhat embarrassing "NO".

After the dinner, I asked him to bring out his translated copy of the Quran. He did not possess one. What he luckily did have though was a functioning computer in his son’s room. I persuaded him to sit with me and I got out the verses which were being used, with proof and through their own mouth by Osama, Naik, Israr and many other unabashed fascist nuts. I showed him ahadees, which corroborated those verses from the Bukhari and Muslim collection. I could almost hear his Islamic world collapsing inside him and heard his heartbeat rising. I knew that I was very near to my goal of making him see the truth. It was just seconds away when all of a sudden he almost toppled the monitor and got up in a rage screaming that it was all western propaganda. He started an incoherent, and increasingly alarming, tirade against the Jews, the West and America and eventually blamed me for being an instrument in the hands of some Western think-tank. Suffice it to say that I left his house with a heavy heart that there is little no hope for a peaceable future for our globe.

Dear Mrs. Syeda Kaneez Fatima Rizvi, Aadaab                                                      shahgufta

Were you a bull-fighter in one of your previous lifetimes, in Islamic Spain, maybe? The only thing that seems to interest you is a bull-fight. (Are your daughters laughing?) Mr. Sultan Shahin asked you a straight question. Please reply to that and enlighten us as all instead of beating about the bush as you did in the last post. We are all waiting. I am posting his questions below in case you have genuinely forgotten them in your preoccupation with evoking laughter to keep your daughters happy.

    --------------

    " ……………..

Anyway, please tell me if I have understood you correctly. It seems your point is that while these Quranic verses asking us to kill the kafirs wherever we find them are not applicable to us today but may become applicable some day in future, if such a situation as the one obtaining in Medina in the time of Prophet arose. If that is the case let us come out in the open and say so clearly, loudly and repeatedly that in the present time there is no reason for Osama bin Ladens and other Wahhabis to propagate the view that we Muslims have Quranic sanction for killing all non-Muslims as well as non-Wahhabi Muslims. Let us not mince words and let us not go about it in a round about way.

This is no time for prevarication or using circumlocutions. We are at war. Parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan have already come under the control of Saudi-ised Taliban. The radicalisation of moderate mainstream Muslim societies like Indonesia and Malaysia is afoot. Even in India, where a mystical Islam reigned until recently, Saudis have bought large number of Mullahs and they are spreading a very intolerant version of Islam. As I keep saying we have no time to lose. I would appreciate from you a clarification of your views in the matter. You don’t have to be a Maulani to do that. This very institution of Maulanas is against the precepts of Islam and at the very least it is an innovation that we do not need to care much for. There is nothing between us and Allah except the Holy Quran and those Ahadees that we consider possibly valid and authentic." -- Sultan Shahin

    Shagufta

P.S. I liked your shagoofa bit, by the way. Coming up with new shagoofas is one way of staying shagufta. Won't you agree?

But in this case, I am truly concerned and worried that even old ladies like you will not take these issues seriously enough to engage in a sombre and consistent conversation on the subject at a time when Muslims the world over are despised for these verses in the Quran. Do we have to abide by them even today as Osama bin Laden asks us to?  Is Jihad really the sixth pillar of Islam? What is wrong with us Muslims really? Is this the problem with our scripture or our own inability to see it valid only for the illiterate Bedouins of the Arab world in those days? Arabs themselves seem to be giving up on Islam, if hey were ever Muslims in the first place. Any people who could watch Imam Hussein RA being killed along with his family in the most brutal manner and then accept the killer as their khalifa/King could be anything but Muslim. They accepted Yazeed Lanati in the same way as they have embraced America and Israel today. And they say Shiiaan-e-Ali are out of Islam! What gall!

Shagufta /Pervez /Sultan Shaheen / Shamshad Elahi Ansari  the list of avatars is endless….

Don’t you guys / gals think, that it is too much of a ‘Khichdi’ now,   the Ring master  did not pay heed to my earlier request about not trying to  feign anything …played the English teacher and unwittingly,  ridiculed himself , then assumed  the role of a concerned  Muslim with all the pain in his chest for the Umah,  again he got exposed, though refused to accept, as his enormous ego did not permit , in the course of the debate his sexists side was blatantly exposed,  again he desperately  tried to cover up, but failed utterly. What is the point when the ‘man himself’ concedes defeat in a debate and then bows down to his hurt ego, assumes a new avatar, repeats the same rigmarole and indulges in flag waving polemics to discuss the same rotten topics again. I think it’s high time for intellectuals and ordinary right thinking Muslims like myself to exit the non existent debate and the site it self. I take your leave with a good advice for the man of the house …If one makes oneself look like an Ass, at least he should have the courage to stand up like a man and accept it. Now if this happens with clear sign of repentance, I might change my opinion about the Mezbaan of the site and decide to remain and continue to enlighten with whatever little I know …..Till then, dive as deep as you can in your pool of religious ignorance.

Nb …Wasails and Rasuk becomes useless when the curse of the Almighty comes. I am one God fearing being Alhamdollillah….and intend to remain this way.

    Om, Yoga and Muslims

Malaysian Muslims have been deprived of the benefits of Yoga by a fatwa issued by the Islamic clergy against it on the ground that the practice of that scientific exercise entails performing certain un-Islamic rituals.

Pronouncing “OM” and performing a procedure called “Surya Namaskar” are the only two things which sound derived from Sanatan scriptures. Muslims don’t worship anything but God and to them the asana Surya Namaskar may resemble worshipping Sun. It is far from truth. The asana Surya Namaskar by no stretch of imagination is worshipping the sun because it is neither performed in the presence of the sun nor is it performed facing it.

Yes, the word “Om” is taken from Sanatan scriptures. Yes, the monosyllable “Om” forms an important part of pranayam. If Baba Ramdeo has suggested that Muslims and Christians may replace the word “Om”  Allah or Jesus, it is extremely generous of him and is an example of inclusiveness.

The stand taken by Darul Uloom and other Muslim bodies is pragmatic and deserves praise.

However, it is difficult to understand how the word “Om” can be replaced by a word which has more than one syllable. Not because it has any religious significance. It has anatomical and physiological significance. Pranayam needs utterance of a word which which makes the body exhale the breath continuously for a long time while the two lips form the oral orifice which is a near circle. If the word “Om” has to be replaced it has to be with some word like Rome or Foam or Dome. Again, strictly speaking the chanting of “Om” in Pranayam amounts to saying “Ooooo..” for as long as one can manage and the “M” part of it generally remains inaudible.

Incidentally, the meaning of the word “Om” is “Supreme and infinite” which is the translation of three of Allah’s beautiful Quranic descriptions:  Akbar, Samad and Baqi.

Good post Mr Jamshed Basha, keep up the good line of thinking, how I wish,  that we see eye to eye on the matter of Yazeed lanati as well. You can still remain a good Sunni and I a good Shia…for Yazeed lanati belongs to the no man’s land.

  • Dear Sultan Shahin,

I have been watching the deabte with some interest on Nimaz vs Yoga and which is better? Some argue that Nimaz is better than Yoga, while some Muslim countries like Malaysia and Indonesia have banned Yoga. While Nimaz may have some of the postures of Yoga, it is certainly a better exercise for men who perform it dutifully and sincerely with the fear of Allah. It cleanse your heart and mind. Whereas Yoga is a physical rigorous exercise with no spirituality linked to it and not all can do it. Those who are physically fit alone can do it. Whereas Nimaz is a must for all practicing Muslim whether one is physically fit or not whether one is old or young but with some concession depending upon one's physical health condition. It is one's choice to do certain exercise to keep oneself fit and agile. Be it horse riding or swimming or running or jogging or walking or any kind of exercise, which is so vital for people suffering from diseases like diabetes, blood pressure or obesity. Even Muslims do those exercise without missing the regular five time prayers. Who prevents them from doing physical exercise? Where is the need to miingle a religious practice with that of physical exercise. It is the choice of the individual. It has no correlation to Nimaz. It is a beautiful experience for all Muslims who perform Nimaz. Ask them how they feel after each prayer. This is the gift for Muslims from Allah, as no other religion directs such prayers than Islam. That is why you can see on TV so many dhongi swamis enticing people to assemble and so some yoga exercises. It is because they do not have a prayer like Muslims have. That is why these people search for some gurus who can guide them. But it is not so in the case of Muslims. Every mosque is a Yoga Centre for Muslims. It is natural and beautiful.  Let's enjoy the Nimaz and stop wasting time on  debating about Yoga.  Lets all be proactive and if some one feels Yoga is a better exercise, let him hold his view. But for Muslims, Nimaz is a beautiful experience which is felt five time a day. Wassalam.

  • Islamic scholars challenge MUI edicts on smoking and yoga

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta, Mon, 01/26/2009 7:15 PM

Hasyim Muzadi, chairman of the country’s largest Islamic organization, challenged an edict by the country’s highest Islamic authority, The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), which bans smoking by children and pregnant women.

Hasyim, himself a smoker, said Monday that the Nahdlatul Ulama, which he chairs, has long declared smoking as “mukruh” (allowed but discouraged), and therefore, had never banned smoking.

"The danger of smoking is relative, not as significant as the danger of drinking (alcohol). Also, those who smoke have also relative benefit, for example, their thinking is clear when smoking,” he was quoted by Tempointeraktif.com as saying.

A special meeting of the Indonesian Ulema Council in Padangpanjang, West Sumatra, on Sunday concluded that smoking was haram and banned pregnant women and children, as well as men in public places, from the practice.

The MUI also banned Muslims from practicing yoga if it contains Hindu rituals such as chanting, the chairman of the group said Monday, citing concerns that it would corrupt their faith.

Meanwhile, Muslim scholar Azyumardi Azra said that the MUI edict on smoking was nothing new because local governments including the Jakarta administration have also banned smoking in public places.

“The MUI edict only gives theological supports to the existing regulations,” he said.

However, Azyumardi, who is an assistant to Vice President Jusuf Kalla, said the MUI edict on yoga was unnecessary and could be counter-productive.

“I know many Muslims are practicing yoga but they still observe Islamic teachings. They do not take the Hindu teachings, but practice it as an exercise for their physical and mental wellbeing,” he said.

Although the edict is not legally binding, most devout Muslims will likely adhere to the MUI edict because they consider ignoring a fatwa, or religious decree, sinful.

    Dear Mr. Sultan Shahin,

It is saddening that someone could oppose a form of body-mind centring that can only improve the quality of one's existence. Thanks for the good work you are doing in reinforcing the moderate view of Islam and teaching us all, although I must admit I go through the mailings only occasionally.

Could I suggest shortening the subject line, so the NewAgeIslam.com does not appear in it, as it already appears in the From line? Less visual clutter.

    Best Regards,

  • had there been need for more physical exercise for our bodies Nabi kareem sww would have certainly asked us to practice yoga or anything similar, instead, we have been asked to indulge more in sports like swimming and horse riding which I am sure involves lot of physical activity. [Shakeel Ahmad Ansari & Rahmat Ali Siddique]

    ===============================

    Dear Shakeel and Siddiqui Sahab[s]

No disrespect intended towards the knowledge of Prophet Mohammad [PBUH].

    Musa bin Talha reported:

‘I and Allah's messenger (pbuh), happened to pass by people near the date-palm trees. The Prophet said: ‘What are these people doing?’ They said: ‘They are grafting, i.e. they combine the male with the female (tree) and thus they yield more fruit.’ Thereupon Allah's messenger (pbuh) said: ‘I do not find it to be of any use’. The people were informed about it and they abandoned this practice. Allah's messenger (pbuh) was later informed that the yield had dwindled, whereupon he said: ‘If there is any use of it, then they should do it, for it was just a personal opinion of mine, and do not go after my personal opinion; but when I say to you anything on behalf of Allah, then do accept it, for I do not attribute lie to Allah, the Exalted and Glorious. (Narrated by Muslim)

Thanks for your prompt and detailed reply to my request. Personally I feel you have given a good argument. But Nimaz is unique and had there been need for more physical exercise for our bodies Nabi kareem sww would have certainly asked us to practice yoga or anything similar, instead, we have been asked to indulge more in sports like swimming and horse riding which I am sure involves lot of physical activity. I also do not agree with people who are fond of giving fatwas for no rhyme or reason without having knowledge to back their claims. Shakeel Ahmad Ansari & Rahmat Ali Siddique

  • I aslo do not agree with people who are fond of giving fatwas for no rhyme or reason without having knowledge to back their claim. [Shakeel Ahmad ansari & Rahmat Ali Siddique]

    =================================

Shakeel Sahab and Siddiqui Sahab are correct to the hilt regarding this Calamity of Fatwa Mongering.

Regarding this Curse of Fatwa Mongering:

O ye who believe! Lo! many of the rabbis and the monks devour the wealth of mankind wantonly and debar (men) from the way of Allah. They who hoard up gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah, unto them give tidings (O Muhammad) of a painful doom,[Repentence - IX (Sorra Al-Tauba) Verse 34].

Prophet Mohammad [PBUH] through many Companions has said: What I am afraid of after me is an astrayed Scholar, Hypocrites who debate in Quran without knowledge and astrayed Imaams {Yaani Mein Tum par sab say ziyada jis cheese say darta hun woh Alim ki thokar hai, Quran ko lay kar Munafiq ka Jadal Hai aur Gumrah Peshwah hain} [Sunan Al Darimi Jamiul Ilm Ibn-e-Barr]

Crux of several Authentic Traditions [Hadiths] in Bukhari, Muslim, Mauta Imam Malik, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood, Nisa'i and Ibn-e-Maja on False Scholars:

"The very first group who would be thrown in hell in the life hereafter would be scholars"

"There will be a time amongst you when people will choose imam amongst ignorants and there will be no genuine Scholar in those days and Knowledge will be taken back so people will look towards these Ignorant {in literal "JAHIL"} Scholar who would astray people from the right path by issuing Fatwas without any proper knowledge of Islam"

"A genuine Scholar cannot be fat {if it is natural then alright} as hell will be ignited with the help of
    these fat scholars"

In the last days there would be people amongst you who will gain the knowledge of Islam just for seeking the world. They will be wearing sheep’s hide to impress people, they will be speaking very softly as if their tongues are made of sugar but their hearts will be worse than Wolves. Allah will say, are you trying to cross Me then Allah will swear upon Himself and will say I will put those people in such an anarchy and confusion that even the brightest among them will be flabbergasted” . {Tirmidhi}.

Near the establishment of the Hour there will be days during which (religious) knowledge will be taken away (vanish) and general ignorance will spread... (Bukhari)

There will come a time for my people when there will remain nothing of the Qur'an except its outward form and nothing of Islam except its name and they will call themselves by this name even though they are the people furthest from it. (Agreed upon)

There will come a time upon the Ummat when people will recite the Qur’an, but it will not go further than their throats, (into their hearts). (Bukhari)

A time will come when a man will not care about how he gets things, whether lawful or unlawful. (Bukhari)

Wolves will give readings in the End Times. Let those who come to see those times seek shelter from their evil in Allah. They will be very corrupt people. Hypocrisy will prevail, and nobody will be ashamed of it and its manifestations. (Tirmidhi, Nawadir al-'usul)

There will appear in latter times a people who will gain this world with the help of religion. (Tirmidhi)

Prophet Mohammad [PBUH] said, “In the End Times men will come forth who will fraudulently use religion for worldly ends and wear sheepskins in public to display meekness. Their tongues will be sweeter than sugar, but their hearts will be the hearts of wolves.” (Tirmidhi)

In the End Times of the community of the faithful, people, those who adorn the mosques but leave their own hearts in ruins, who fail to look after their religion as much as they do their clothes, who forsake their religious obligations for the sake of their activities in this world, will increase in number. (Agreed upon).

The Hour will come when voices are raised in the mosques. (Tirmidhi).

The Hour will come when leaders are oppressors. (Al-Haythami, Kitab al-Fitan).

There will come a time for my people when… the mosques will be full of people but they will be empty of right guidance. (Agreed upon).

A time will come when the hypocrites will live secretly among you, and the faithful will try to live
their religion in secret among others. (Agreed upon).

Let him who reads the Qur’an ask (his reward) from Allah. Because in the final times there will be many people who read the Qur’an and seek their reward from other people. (Tirmidhi)

When the Qur’an is read as if singing a song, and when a person is esteemed for reading in that way, even though he is not knowledged …(Al-Tabarani, Al-Kabir) .

At that time, people will sell their religion for a small amount of worldly goods. (Musnad Ahmad Bin Hanbal).

The Last Hour will not come before there come forth thirty Dajjals (imposters), each presenting himself as an apostle of Allah. (Abu Dawood).

During the days of Pious Companions [May Allah be pleased with everyone of them] of Holy Prophet Mohammad [PBUH], and even after the times of his [PBUH] people used to come to the Scholars for Fatwa but Scholars in those days strictly avoided Fatwa, even the Companions used to refer the problem to Quran and Hadith or they prefer silence but nowadays its no matter at all Mullah issue Fatwa at the drop of hat particularly these Deobandis, failing to see that the are actually opposing the very religion which they follow by issuing wrong Fatwa [contrary to what is ordered in Quran and Hadith] as happened in the cases of Deobandi Fatwa on Imrana Rape Case and Pakistani Fatwa on Terrorism , Read the articles at the end of my comment.

The Salaf used to exercise great caution in matters of Fatwa. Imaam Hanbal [May Allah have mercy on his soul] used to frequently say : "I don't know". Imaam Malik is reported to have said that the Mufti must be conscious of accountability to Allah before responding to any question. According to Ibn Masud [May Allah be pleased with him] and Ibn Abbas  [May Allah be pleased with him] , a person who answers every question is mad. Unfortunately there are many persons who claim the mantle of issuing Fatwa without proper training and without having acquired the necessary expertise, thereby causing confusion and misunderstanding amongst the lay public.

Imam Malik [May Allah have mercy on his soul] was famous for his piety and integrity, and courageously stood up prepared to suffer for his conviction. For example, in 135 A.H., When the governor of Madina demanded and forced people to take the oath of allegiance in favour of Khalifa Al-Mansoor, the Imam issued a Fatwa that such an oath was not binding because it was given under duress.

Since this fatwa was not in the interest of the ruler, the governor arrested the Imam and had him publicly flogged for the "crime".

Al-Mansoor, learning of this outrage, apologized to the Imam and dismissed the errant governor.

Imam Malik [May Allah have mercy on his soul] was offered 3,000 gold coins (dinars) by Mansoor, as travelling expenses to Baghdad and subsequent residence in the Capital, but the Imam politely refused the offer saying that he prefered to live in Madina near Rasulullah (saw).

Imam Malik [May Allah have mercy on his soul] never intended the formation of a school of thought bearing his name. It was his disciples & followers who later developed a Fiqah School based on Imam Malik's rulings.

Imam An-Nawawi [May Allah have mercy on his soul] said, “This Hadith explains what raising up the knowledge means in the  previous Hadiths, that is, not by erasing it from people’s hearts, but by the death of the scholars who carry such knowledge. Then, people will seek some ignorant persons who will rule with their ignorance, thus becoming misguided themselves and will also misguide others.” Issuing Fatwas without knowledge is indeed a major sin and Bid’ah. Allah said, what translated means, Say (O Mohammad), “(But) the things that my Lord has forbidden are great evil sins whether committed openly or secretly, sins of all kinds, unrighteous oppression, joining partners in worship with Allah for which He has given no authority, and saying things about Allah of which you have no knowledge.” [7:33].

Imam ibn Al-Qayyim [May Allah have mercy on his soul] said, “The origin of Kufr [Disbelief] and Shirk [Polytheism] comes from saying about Allah without knowledge, which is one of the most prohibited acts in the Sight of Allah. It produces the most harmful effects, because it entails lying with regards to Allah and describing Him with what is not appropriate. This also entails changing and altering Allah’s religion, denying what He has approved while approving what He has denied, implementing what He has rejected while rejecting what He has commanded to be carried out, hating those who are His loyalists while taking His enemies as loyal friends, detesting what He loves while loving what He hates, and describing Him with what is not appropriate with regards to His Attributes, Speech and Actions.”

"Truly, Allah does not remove Sacred Knowedge by taking it out of servants, but rather by taking back the souls of Islamic scholars [in death], until, when He has not left a single scholar, the people take the ignorant as leaders, who are asked for and who give Islamic legal opinion without knowledge, misguided and misguiding" (Bukhari Fath al-Bari, 1.194, hadith 100).

“ Holy Prophet Mohammad {PBUH} said: In the last days there would be people amongst you who will gain the knowledge of Islam just for seeking the world. {Tirmidhi- Volume-2}.

Excerpt from "The Evil Of Craving For Wealth And Status" by Imam Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali

Know that craving after status and position inevitably causes great harm before its attainment due to the striving necessary to attain it, and also afterwards due to the person's strong desire to hold onto it which produces injustice, haughtiness and other evils.

Aboo Bakr al-Aajurree, who was one of the wise scholars and teachers at the start of the fourth
century, wrote a treatise about the manners and the sentiments of the scholars and it is one of the best works on this topic. One who studies it will know from it the way of the scholars of the Salaf, and will know the innovated ways contrary to their way. So he describes the evil scholar at length, from this description is that: 'He has become infatuated with love of this world, and with praise, honour and position with the people of this world. He uses knowledge as an adornment just as a beautiful woman adorns herself with jewelry for this world, but he does not adorn his knowledge with action upon it." He then mentions a lengthy speech and then says, "So these characteristics and their like predominate in the heart of one who does not benefit from knowledge, so whilst he carries these attributes his soul will come to have love of status and position - so that he loves to sit with kings and the sons of this world.

Then he loves to share in their opulent lifestyle, sharing their lavish attire, their comfortable transport, servants, fine clothing, delicate bedding and delicious food. He will love that people throng to his door, that his saying is listened to, and that he is obeyed - and he can only attain the latter by becoming a judge (qaadee) - so he seeks to become one. Then he is unable to attain it except at the expense of his Religion, so he debases himself to the rulers and their helpers, serving them himself and giving them his wealth as a tribute. He remains silent when he sees their evil actions after entering their palaces and homes. Then on top of this he may praise their evil actions and declare them good due to some false interpretation in order to raise his position with them. So when he has accustomed himself to doing this over a long period of time and falsehood has taken root in him - then they appoint him to the position of judge (qaadee) and in so doing slaughter him without a knife." [Alluding to the saying of the Prophet, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, "He who is appointed as a judge has been killed without a knife" Reported by Ahmad, Aboo Daawood (transl. 3/1013/ no.3564) and at-Tirmidhee who declared it hasan. I say: its isnaad is saheeh.]

Then they have bestowed such a favour upon him that he is obliged and has to show his gratitude to them – so he takes great pains to make sure that he does not anger them and cause them to remove him from his position. But he has no concern about whether he angers his Lord, the Most High, so he misappropriates the wealth of orphans, widows, the poor and the needy,
and wealth bequested as waqf (religious endowment) for those fighting Jihaad and the nobles of Makkah and al-Madeenah, and wealth which is supposed to be of benefit to all the Muslims - but instead he uses it to satisfy his clerk, chamberlain and servant. So he eats that which is haraam and feeds with that which is haraam and increases that which is a proof against him. So woe to the one whose knowledge causes him to have these characteristics. Indeed this is the knowledge which the Prophet, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, sought refuge from and ordered us to seek refuge from. This is the knowledge which the Prophet, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, mentioned, saying, "Those amongst the people receiving the severest punishment on the Day of Resurrection is the scholar who is not given benefit through his knowledge by Allaah." [Reported by Ibn 'Abdul-Barr in Jaami' Bayaanil-`Ilm (1/162) and al-Aajurree (pp.93-94) and at-Tabaraanee in as-Sagheer (1/1831) and others and its chain of narration is very weak since it contains 'Uthmaan ibn Miqsarn al-Burree who was accused of lying and fabrication. It is however reported as being the saying of Abud-Dardaa only, with an authentic chain of narration. It is reported by ad-Daarimee (1/82) and others.]

He, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, used to say, Allaahumma innee a`oodhubika minal arba`i, min `ilmin laa yanfa`u, wa min qalbin laa yakhsha`u, wa min nafsin laa tashba`u, wa min du`aain laa yusma`u

"O Allaah, I seek Your refuge from knowledge which does not benefit; from a heart which does not fear; from a soul which is never satisfied; and from a supplication which is not heard." [Reported by Ahmad, Aboo Daawood (transl. vol. 1/p.401/no. 1543) and others, all with the wording, "O Allaah I seek Your refuge from four: from knowledge which does not benefit…" The hadeeth was declared saheeh by al-Haakim and adh-Dhahabee agreed, and it has supports from a number of the Companions.]

And he, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, used to say, Allahumma innee as'aluka `ilman naafi`an, wa
    a`oodhubika min `ilmin laa yanfa`u

"O Allaah, I ask you for beneficial knowledge, and I seek Your refuge from knowledge which does not benefit." [Reported with this wording by Al-Aajurree (p.134) and Ibn Hibbaan (no.2426). It is also reported by Ibn Maajah (no.3483) and Ibn `Abdul-Barr (1/162) with the wording, "Ask Allaah for beneficial knowledge and seek Allaah's refuge from knowledge which does not benefit." Its chain of narration is hasan (good) and there is a similar narration from Umm Salamah reported by Ibn Maajah and others.]

That was said by Imaam Aboo Bakr Al-Aajurree, Rahimahullaah ta`aala, who lived at the end of the fourth century (he died, in the year 360H) and corruption increased and multiplied greatly since his time - and there is no might and no strength except by Allaah's will.

  • Yes, “translation” is not a problem within Muslim community .So why are they not able to be in league with right message of Prophet, especially the terrorists? What prompts smaller children to carry guns in their hands? Why ”Jihad” has come to be associated with elimination of innocents instead of elimination of bad tendencies lurking within?

Quranic Verses: Giving Rise To Islamic Terrorism ?

What is really the problem within Muslim community

Isn’t it time for Muslim thinkers to do some real soul-searching? Have they ability to make the right sense prevail among misguided soul within their community who are blood thirsty?

And a very important question: Is only misinterpretation the real cause of rise of dangerous souls within Islamic world? Why have such misinterpretations not given rise to blood-thirsty souls in other major religions like Hinduism and Buddhism? Have a look at the pages of History. It’s full of barbaric acts of Muslim rulers across the globe.

Some have expressed unhappiness over the fact that some are engaged in misinterpretation of Quranic verses. True. Bad translation is a real problem. However, the greater truth is that menace is being created by people in league with authentic versions of Quran and not by people in league with translated version. Is the ” two language” creating problem for Talibanis too ?

One gentleman, hailing from Pakistan, too lamented on Instablogs that some are engaged in bad translation of Quranic verses. He went on to make a “a humble request,” that please read “the translation approved by some MUSLIM scholars”. Indeed, very good advice. And just see what comes out from the mouth of such a person who claims to have read the right version: “After this mess, every Muslim will think to destroy Israel.....and it will make conditions worse every where.”

That says all. That also let us know, albeit in a subtle way, what is really the problem within Muslim community.
