Publicising Sufism and Pakistani Media

Sawt ul Haque, Karachi, June 2014

If you want to render a community living dead, the easiest way for doing it is to make them inclined towards Dargahs, monasteries and Mazars. It will die its own death. In our country, a living example of it is the ‘Golden Bird’ Sindh. (To them) Hajj is according to the Quran an occasion and place to resolve the disputes of the nations and tribes, an international court and Jirga. Egypt’s Jamal Abdul Nasir writes in his book Saurah (Philosophy of Religion): “One year I went on pilgrimage, I observed strange rites of the Hajj pilgrims. I told Shah Saud, “You have made fun of Hajj. He replied, “These are not our affairs but are a part of the affairs of the Maulvis. If we have to maintain our power, we should not interfere with their affairs. Take care of yourself and leave them to their state.”

Almost all the governments of Muslims have been following the same policy. Give Caesar his share and the Church its share. Caesar can sustain his power as long as he keeps the religious leadership in good humour. During the Crusades, the king always had the Cardinal with him. Today, probably in our societies too the same policies have been adopted. Sufism is being propagated in almost all the channels so that Caesar prolongs his rule and people do not disturb the comforts of the living rulers for their own needs. They should weep at the graves, beseech them for favours and inform them of their needs. They should not hold protest meetings, should not bring out rallies etc. What purpose do they serve after all? If you do not get anything, be content with the thought that it was not God’s will and everyone has to bow its head before God’s will.

Poet Iqbal had had the vision what was going to happen in India. That’s why he had written a poem, “Iblees ki Majlis-e-Shura” (Council of Satan). It is a long allegorical poem. In the meeting of Satan, every Satan comes and submits his report. For example, the Satan says that that world you have so far populated is going to be destroyed very soon because Communism had come to rule. Iblees says, “O fools, we do not face any threats from Communism; the real threat is Islam.” His disciples ask him what orders they get to wipe out this religion. Iblees says:

Our well being depends on Muslims’ eternal slavery. He should leave this mortal world for others to rule. Keep him engaged in Wazayf (remembrance of God) and confine him to the monasteries. Render him impractical and characterless so that he is defeated in every battle of life.

Dear readers! Tears have welled into my eyes when I am writing these lines. We are obeying the orders of our spiritual guide, Iblees like disciplined disciples.  Today is 19th April, 2014. Sama TV is telecasting the programme Qutb Online. The camera and mike takes the viewers to the Mazar of Bahauddin Zakaria and Ruknuddin Shah Alam in Multan. The statements of men and women are being recorded. “From where have you come and why?” Almost every one said, “We have come to supplicate. We have come to seek intervention and God’s benevolence. He is Waliuallah (Friend of God).” The mike asked, “You have come from such a great distance while Hadhrat Data Ganj Bakhsh is closer to you.”

One female pilgrim said, “Whatever we have is his (Data Ganj Bakhsh) gift only. So we have come to seek here too. Instead of making her realise that from which she was seeking help himself did not have anything, the mike said, “Please pray for me also.”

Dear readers, in this way the faith of the people is being strengthened in the powers of those who have passed away.

The nation is being driving towards Dargahs and every channel is racing with each other in this regard. The person holding the mike could not make them understand because they themselves are immersed in Sufism. Every night on Sama TV, they give the viewers prescriptions from the Quranic verses for the fulfillment of their needs, cures from diseases, male child, success in the examinations and success in marriage. The Quran is not for the cure of physical diseases. Only honey is called a cure for the sons of Adam.

“Then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you]." There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colours, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought. “(16:69)

It does not mean that the verse relating to honey should be dissolved in water and drunk or kept under the pillow to show results. It will not benefit it. The honey should be consumed. God has also told us about the cure for the heart’s disease, the heart’s disease of a hypocrite. God says:

“They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not. In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease;  “ (2:9,10)

The verse makes it clear that this disease is not heart disease but the disease is lies, deceit and treachery for which the Quran has cure, provided one has faith in it. In Surah Hajj, God says:

“[That is] so He may make what Satan throws in a trial for those within whose hearts is disease and those hard of heart. And indeed, the wrongdoers are in extreme dissension.  “(22:53)

Though the heart is made of flesh, if it does not have fear of God it is called a stone. This is not a real stone and they did not have the disease for which a Cardiologist is consulted. They were healthy people and lived a long life. The disease was that they were committing deceit and lies with the holy Prophet pbuh. God said,

“O mankind, there has to come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers.  “(10:57)

“There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought.  “(16:69)

In the previous verse, the disease of the heart and the chest is mentioned. But the disease of the heart of chest is not the disease related to the hospital. This is the disease of lies and hypocrisy and this disease will also be cured by acting on the ordainments of the Quran and not by merely reciting it. If the physical disease would have been cured by the recital of the Quran, why did the holy Prophet pbuh and the holy companions got external treatment. Herbal oils and herbs for the cure of asthma are found and it is being used since the sacred times. One cure for Jaundice is that a vein is cut on the right wrist which gives out yellow puss for three days. After three days the disease would be cured off. This treatment has been in vogue since the days of the Prophet pbub.

One more method of treatment is in vogue since the days of the holy Prophet pbuh which is done by the barbers. The hair of a part of the head is removed. The barber strikes the place with his razor softly making the area soft. Then he sucks the blood from that part through a horn and spits the blood out. This treatment is for blood pressure. Some of my friends in the Arab forces say that after this treatment, one feels like a new born baby. A few people need the treatment again after one year. This mode of treatment is used in India and Pakistan too and here, worms are used instead of horns. Now, we revert to the topic of Sama and Qutbs.

If the physical treatment had been possible with Quran, why would the Prophet pbuh and the holy companions get external treatment? Their chests were illuminated with the verses of the Quran. They could have treated their sickness. And why are billions of rupees spent on the construction of hospitals and on doctors in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. They should be removed and people like Qutbs should be appointed. The disease will not be cured. On the contrary the patients will not survive. Nowadays, Perwez Musharraf is in Karachi and his heart is not working well. He may prescribe some Wazifa for his cure. If it works, he may be rewarded suitably.

The problem is that they cannot be held accountable if the need of the people is not fulfilled. For example you cannot say, ‘you had said that I should read the Wazifa before going to bed and after the Fajr Namaz fifteen times and the girl’s father will relent’. If the girl is married off somewhere else, you cannot reach him.

A boat was afloat in the river Nile. Suddenly, it was caught in a storm. It seemed as if it will drown. Everyone was praying.  The Pakistani was crying, “O Maula Ali, please get us ashore.’ The Egyptians were praying to God. The Afrikaans was praying to their Moro Goro. The Hindus were calling their Bhagwan from India and the English were praying to their God. Suddenly one of them stood up and said, “Stop this crying and wailing. The boat will not drown.”

People asked, ‘How?’

He said, ‘I am telling you, it will not break.’ His friend was sitting next to him and knew him since childhood. He said, ‘O my friend Mahmood, I know you since childhood. You are a street hawker. How come you have become a saint today and claiming that the boat will not drown?’ He said, ‘You fool, if the boat does not sink, you will see how I am respected. They will put all the bounties of the world on my feet and will shower me with wealth. We two will live a luxurious life. I am only shooting in the dark.’

‘But my friend, if the arrow does not hit the target?’

‘If the arrow does not hit the target, before their hands reach my collar, I will drown along with them. So, all these people who fool people are just shooters in the dark. If it hits the target, fine and if it does not, you will look for them and will not find them. And most of the people say that Hadhrat might have told me that right prescription, it has not work due to my own fault or shortcomings. Perhaps, that day I had not performed the ablution or my clothes were dirty etc.

The disease of the patient grows due to false promises and finally becomes incurable. That’s why they are the enemies of humanity.

The sanctity of the verses of the Quran is unquestionable but the creator of the Quran has not said anywhere that you can use them for this or that disease.

The sharpness of the knife is accepted but it is not for unscrewing. Not one or two but many people use the pen to put Azarband in their pyjamas. Many wrap the pen with a piece of cloth to clean their ears. Sometimes they hurt their ears in the process. Wise people use proper tools for doing their work. The pen is for writing. There is also a verse titled Pen in the Quran.  God also says:

“Who taught by the pen - “(96:4)

This blessed verse is from God who taught you how to write and who brought you and the Pen into existence. If someone uses the knife to unscrew things or someone hurts his ears with the pen, whose fault it is?

The simple fact is that as a nation we are hypocrites. The cigarette packets have picture of cancer hit mouth and we display advertisements discouraging smoking but we also show our actors taking a puff in films and dramas. There are factories manufacturing cigarettes. They have license and they pay taxes to the government. Because of arms, our hands are blood soaked. It cannot be stopped because the renewal of a pistol fetches the government Rs 1000 annually. The US has made Waziristan its hunting ground.(Nowadays it is showing some degree of abstinence). Earlier it used to kill Pakistanis on a daily basis. No problem, the US pays us for that. In other words, if the government gets money, everything is o.k. this is the case we are responsible for all the maladies and at the same time we are striving to make things better. How will it work then? God has given a very wise hint towards this hypocrisy.

“And to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth, and to Him is [due] worship constantly. Then is it other than Allah that you fear?  “(16:52)

O God! We have become like that woman. Our former rulers, present rulers and rulers in waiting are all like that woman. We had expected that your Book will guide them on the right path but that Book was handed over to the Qutb Online. They discovered the use of the Book with which even Gabriel and the holy Prophet pbuh might not have been aware. The problem is that one among the viewers is a needy person and a needy person considers even a little help enough for him. They regard them as their messiah and fall into their trap.

God clearly says in the Quran:

“Say, [O Muhammad], "I only invoke my Lord and do not associate with Him anyone. Say, "Indeed, I do not possess for you [the power of] harm or right direction." “(72:20, 21)

The holy Prophet pbuh has also conveyed this message to us. Every household has the Quran.

“Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin. “(4:48)

God said to his prophet pbuh:

“Say, [O Muhammad], "I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allah “(6:50)

God says that the Prophet pbuh neither has treasure trove nor can he benefit or harm anyone but there are some who do not believe in this word of God and say, Bhar Do Jholi Meri Ya Muhammad. This is because they have put God and the Prophet pbuh on the same pedestal. God says that the Prophet pbuh does not have any treasure trove. How can Rukn-e-Alam and Bahauddin have any? Their own grandson, the son of the former Prime Minister has been kidnapped and has not been recovered till date. These saints who have been resting in their graves for ages could have recovered the son of Yousuf Raza Geelani who belongs to their generations. But God says that he who has died does not hear you. And in case if they hear, they cannot respond to you;

“If you invoke them, they do not hear your supplication; and if they heard, they would not respond to you.  “(35:14)

God says on another occasion that only those alive only listen to the word of truth. The dead can neither listen nor respond. God further says:

“And not equal are the living and the dead. Indeed, Allah causes to hear whom He wills, but you cannot make hear those in the graves. “(35:22)

The graves have got a mention in this verse. Does one get any justification for visiting the graves, for telling them their woes and begging from them after this verse? This is sheer defiance of God as God says that they cannot hear or respond to you but you go to them to tell them their woes and ask them for favours. It means you do not believe in what God says. Some women were tying knots on the web of Mazar and it was being shown on the Sama TV. The mission of Iblees was being accomplished.

Today you can see that in the world we are a defeated lot. Pakistan’s name crops up whenever an explosion takes place anywhere in India. Recently, Shah Rukh Khan was detained at the New York airport for hours. He was considered a Pakistani because of his title Khan. He was released on the intervention of the Indian ambassador. The teams of other countries do not come to play in our country. No country invests in our country. How can the factories run if there is no electricity? A minister had said that the electricity was about to come. The reply (from the country) was, ‘well, do call us when it comes’. Recently an Indian female diplomat was arrested because she had misbehaved with the maid servant. The result was that all the security apparatus was lifted from the US embassy within an hour and government came down so heavily on the US government that the US had to release the lady. In our country, the shoes of the colleague of Perwez Musharraf had been taken off. God says, Tuizzo Man Tashao Wa Tuzillo Man Tashao.

The word Izzat is translated in English as strong, powerful and glory. If we want to live in the world with honour, we will have to become strong. The verse Tuizzo Man Tashao Wa Tuzillo Man Tashao does not mean that He gives honour or disgrace to whom he wishes. The Pakistani Izzat is called honouring tribute in Arabic. It is a pity that our rulers bought for us dishonour from the market of the world and we are living life in that way. Maladies do not have an end and the journey does also not end though it seems that our end is near.

Ibn-e-Insha had said, ‘There can be no doubt in the ruin of the nation that left a poet like Iqbal at the mercy of the Quawwals.

The truth is that in the beginning we had written that as a nation we are hypocrites. It might have offended some of our friends. Hypocrite is one who has something in the heart and something else on the tongue. For example, we respect Iqbal and Jinnah equally and consider them as the founder of our nation. Their photographs feature in school textbooks.  They appear in deep thought. Neither the children nor the adult people bother to find out why they appear to be immersed in deep thought with their heads hanging down. The self proclaimed leaders may also not know this. Allam Iqbal thinks that the nation respects him but does not obey him. “I have dissuaded them in my hundreds of couplets from visiting Dargahs, monasteries and Mazars. It is a great insult for a human being that a living person beseeches before the dead, saying, ‘Do my work, I will present you with bouquets, Deghs etc. God says:

“That is Allah, your Lord; to Him belongs sovereignty. And those whom you invoke other than Him do not possess [as much as] the membrane of a date seed. “(35:13)

God also says:

“Do you not know that to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and [that] you have not besides Allah any protector or any helper? “(2:107)

God again says:

“Then do those who disbelieve think that they can take My servants instead of Me as allies? Indeed, We have prepared Hell for the disbelievers as a lodging. “(18:102)

On another occasion God says:

“The example of those who take allies other than Allah is like that of the spider who takes a home. And indeed, the weakest of homes is the home of the spider, if they only knew. Indeed, Allah knows whatever thing they call upon other than Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. “(29:41,42)

So, Allama Iqbal should not think so much with his head bowed down as it will hurt his neck. He should leave us to our fate. By God’s grace, we are Muslims, worship one God, love our Prophet pbuh more than we do our lives. We believe in the religion and the Quran but do not practice what they preach.

Dr Ghulam Geelani Barq says,’a landlord enters his green fields with his bulls. An economist and a botanist are already present there. They are all looking at the field from their own point of view. The bull is waiting to be free to graze the greenery. The landlord is estimating how much of the debt can be repaid this time. The economist is thinking what effect the good crops will have on the economy this year. And the botanist is pondering over the plantations, the composition of the plants, variety of colours and bacteria and the surprising mechanism of the leaves.

The Quran is like the field. Some people look at it from the mystical point of view; some have praised its oratorical features. The preachers took out interesting tales from it. The mullah was only interested in the mention of houris and the holy wine. The jurists considered it only a book of jurisprudence. The Gaddi Nashins (of Sufi shrines) only looked for verses on Sajdah-e-Tazimi. The monks produced arguments in favour of renunciation of the world from it. And some people turned it into a book of Jantar mantra. But I found in it valuable gems of political, economic and moral prosperity and progress. In it, I found the details of the beauty of the world and finally I realised that there is a complete consonance in the word and deeds of God. What is the Universe? It is an exposition of the Quran. What is Quran? It is the text of the Universe.
