Abstract:

Sectarianism and religious intolerance have harmful effects on society. Many groups misuse religion for personal interests, which creates hatred, tension, and violence among people. Blind support for sects weakens unity and damages social peace. Muslims should follow the Qur’an, Sunnah, and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) instead of extreme sectarian thinking. Moderation, respect, and tolerance are very important during religious disagreements. Hateful speeches, false religious claims, and irresponsible preachers increase social division and mistrust among people. Sectarian extremism can be reduced only by promoting common Islamic values, peaceful dialogue, mutual respect, understanding, harmony, and responsible religious guidance within society.

Main Points:

·         Sectarian hatred creates social tension, violence, mistrust, and weakens peace, unity, and harmony within society.

·         Muslims should follow the Qur’an and Sunnah instead of blindly supporting sectarian beliefs and divisions.

·         Respect, moderation, and tolerance during disagreements help maintain balance, peace, and healthy social relationships everywhere.

·         Hate speeches and false religious statements spread division, anger, fear, and harmful misunderstandings among ordinary people.

·         Promoting common Islamic teachings can reduce sectarian extremism and strengthen social peace, trust, and brotherhood.

Today, many sects and groups exist in society in the name of religion and schools of thought. If we honestly analyse them, it can be said that many groups have ignored the true principles and teachings of Islam and have formed rules according to their own interests. Because of this, whenever their interests are challenged, social tension, hatred, and sectarian violence increase in society. Therefore, the conflicts and divisions created in the name of sects are often not for truth and justice, but mostly for worldly benefits and material gains.

Sadly, these sectarian ideas and man-made principles have been promoted in such a way that ordinary people have started believing them to be the real religion. As a result, extreme attachment and blind support for sects have become very common among the public. This attitude is highly dangerous and always produces negative effects in society.

It would not be wrong to say that violence and hatred in the name of sects have now become a serious social problem. Therefore, controlling this issue is extremely important. To reduce sectarian violence and intellectual extremism, certain necessary steps must be taken. The first step is to spread the true message of Islam among the people. The principles created by sectarian leaders to prove their own ideas correct or to gain worldly benefits should be avoided as much as possible.

Now the question arises: how can we identify the true teachings of Islam, when every sect claims to be right and considers others wrong? The answer is that we must first turn towards the Qur’an, Sunnah, and the practices of the Prophet Muhammad( peace be upon him). If guidance is found there, then it should be followed without hesitation. Sectarian interpretations should not be given preference over these basic sources. The Qur’an and Sunnah are the primary foundations of Islam. If a matter is not clearly mentioned there, then other recognised Islamic sources may be consulted. In this way, society can be protected from misleading religious interpretations made only to increase sectarian influence and followers. This can only happen when people adopt a balanced and moderate approach.

However, the current situation is quite different. People today appear extremely rigid and intolerant regarding their sects and beliefs. Therefore, moderation is necessary. The best method is to remain firm on the basic teachings of Islam, show flexibility in secondary matters, and maintain respect and proper manners during disagreements. If this balanced method is ignored, social problems and unrest will continue to increase.

On the other hand, if someone compromises on the basic teachings of religion in the name of tolerance, becomes narrow-minded in secondary matters, or ignores respect during disagreements, then this attitude is also harmful. Such behaviour destroys social balance and creates hatred and conflict within society. Unfortunately, the present environment clearly lacks moderation and balance, which is why sectarian pollution and division continue to grow and negatively affect society.

To end sectarian violence and reduce sectarian pollution, society must be protected from speeches, sermons, articles, and writings filled with hatred. Today, many so-called preachers only spread sectarian hatred and violence. In reality, many of them neither properly understand religion nor religious teachings. Some do not even know the basic manners of civilised behaviour. For the sake of money, they spread false and fabricated statements in the name of religion.

This group has not only increased sectarian pollution but has also badly damaged the universal message of Islam. Openly saying that “having relations with people of a certain sect can damage one’s faith” is completely unacceptable. Such behaviour clearly promotes hatred and social violence. It harms peace, unity, and coexistence within society. Similarly, treating the writings of elders as final and giving them preference over the Qur’an and Hadith also creates social division. The idea that “whatever our elders have written is absolutely correct” and refusing to accept any truth against it is not limited to one sect only; such thinking is found in almost all sects. These attitudes create hatred and mistrust among people, which is harmful for any healthy society.

Islamic teachings demand the creation of a society where peace, harmony, welfare, trust, and mutual respect are promoted. If genuine scholarly disagreements exist between sects, they should remain limited to scholars and educated people. Such matters should not be spread among the general public, because excessive emotional attachment often leads to extremism. Unfortunately, most sectarian conflicts today are more common among ordinary people than among scholars. Therefore, practical steps must be taken to protect the public from sectarian hatred and violence.

Sectarian violence is one of the major causes of social pollution in society, and its roots have become very deep. Therefore, our first responsibility is to focus on those teachings and issues that are common among all sects. Only then can sectarian extremism and hatred be reduced in society.
