Inherent Indiscipline Among the Middle-Class Muslim Community Comes to The Fore Amid Lockdown

By S. Arshad, New Age Islam

30 March 2020

The Quran calls the Muslim community the best one because they are supposed to be ideal persons in the society. They demonstrate good behaviour, tell people what is good and what is bad; they follow discipline, obey the laws of the country and follow the instructions of their religious leaders in matters of faith. They seek the welfare of the whole society and in times of trials and tribulations, they help the people in distress.

Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the inherent indiscipline and their lack of civic sense, particularly of the middle-class Muslim community. Such indiscipline has already been demonstrated on Shab-e-Barat when Muslim youth race with each other on motorcycles on the roads at night defying traffic rules and risking their own lives and those of others. The same indiscipline and lack of Civic sense and scant respect for the law and for the appeals of religious authorities has again come to the fore during the lockdown triggered by the fear of Covid-19.

The government of India has implemented 21-day lockdown in order to contain the spread of the pandemic. Only essential services have been permitted. People have been asked to observe social distancing and have been instructed to stay indoors. They have been allowed to come out of their homes only to buy essential commodities and medicines because the virus spreads very fast through contact.

The religious leaders of Muslims have also realized the gravity of the situation and have unanimously suspended collective prayers in mosques asking Muslims to offer prayers at home. They have also advised Muslims to stay at home and observe social distancing.

Unfortunately, it has been painfully observed that Muslims living in middle class localities and bustee areas have ignored the lockdown rules as well as appeals of the ulema and social activists. They have not taken the epidemic seriously and have been roaming around in the locality uselessly or assembling in the streets for gossips. In other words, there is business as usual in these localities.

As for Kolkata, in the Muslim majority areas like Matiabruz, Topsia, Taltala etc youth are seen playing cricket in deserted streets, or moving around on bikes or simply standing on the road in groups. All the appeals of the police and ulema have fallen on deaf ears.

In other districts like Hooghly, the situation is almost the same in Muslim areas and bustee areas. In Chapdani, Telnipara, Angus etc people are seen loitering in streets. The police sometimes have to use force to disperse them. When they see the police van coming, they withdraw to their homes but as soon as the police disappear, they come out of their homes, grinning and joking.

The scenario is not different in other towns and cities of India. For example, in the Okhla area of New Delhi, where the women of Shaheen Bagh earned the reputation for discipline and observance of law, the youth in the area have disappointed the local administration with their ignorance of the threat posed by the virus and disobedience of lockdown rules so much so that a senior police official of Okhla had to issue a  special appeal to the people of Jamia Nagar, Shaheen Bagh, Okhla and Friends Colony to stay indoors during the lockdown. This is a matter of shame for the residents of a Muslim locality.

The behaviour of Muslims of neighbouring Pakistan is equally disappointing. The country is under a 14-day lockdown as the pandemic has affected more than 1400 people and about 15 people are dead. Still, the Muslims, particularly, the Middle-Class Muslims have ignored the appeals of the administration and religious leaders to stay indoors. Therefore, Dr Tahirul Qadri had to issue an appeal to the Muslims to stay at home for their own safety and health and also asked the government to enforce the lockdown if it wants to contain the epidemic soon. "Otherwise, the lockdown will serve no purpose", he said.

This shows the irresponsible behaviour of the general Muslims particularly in the Sub-continent in the face of a serious global threat like Covid-19. With this lack of sense of social responsibility, defeating the pandemic seems difficult.

  • Lack of respect for man-made laws cause for Muslim defiance.

  • Mr Arshad, the government is fighting a battle on several fronts to prevent millions of deaths. In a situation like this, it becomes the responsibility of each citizen to aid government efforts. Not sit in sidelines and spit venom. You accuse me of being on the government's side in this time of crisis. I accuse you of being against tjis government, irrespective of crisis. Your claim that no lockdown would have been better than lockdown is ridiculous. World over, lockdowns are the currently the only thing that works in crowded nations like ours. How do you know I dont criticise the other groups and individuals who are behaving irresponsibly and endangering lives? You dont have access to all my social media. As for shaheen bagh...what a perverted mindset you have. You will not blame shaheen bagh organisers for not obeying the 144 restriction. You are asking government why TJ was not dismantled the way SB was. How about taking some ownership and dismantling it yourselves? If govt had interfered you would have started shouting govt is communal. Muslims have put themselves in a position where law enforcers hesitate to touch them even where absolutely necessary. And no country in the world is giving free masks and gloves to people. Why dont all your preachers and tabhleeghis do something towards creating public awareness among muslims and tell them to stay home and abide by rules? No, they are telling people that Allah will protect muslims. And GM can stfu. This is not about hating muslims. It is about calling them out ALONG WITH OTHER PEOPLE FROM ALL FAITHS WHO ARE BEHAVING IRRESPONSIBLY IN THE TIME OF CRISIS. Get that into your Hindu hating head.
Aayina, go ahead with bringing this site to the notice of authorities as a hate spewing and defamatory site. Each participant here spares no effort to blame government for everything.

  • Arrogant hate-pracharaks like Secularlogic will always find lies to smear Muslims with.
Insufficient observation of precautions has been reported from all communities (a Christian pastor was arrested in Florida yesterday for continuing to hold church services in spite of the ban on congregations) and this must be stopped, but it is a waste of time to respond to mendacious mud slingers.

  • The Shahin Bagh was evacuated on 24th but Markaz was evacuated on 31st. What was the priority of the government, Corona or Shahin Bagh?
    By Arshad - 3/31/2020 5:06:27 AM

  • To Sultan Shahin.
It Scnecior request that, if you do not tell Mr Arshad, of taking his word of accusing Goverment of buying MLA's without any proof, I will report your website of spitting venom on government as some Muslims on this website have develop unnecessary Bias towards government, if your groups on the website want to protest do it mannerfully stop accusing and defaming tactics.

  • As for free masks, did the government even tell the people that wearing masks and gloves was mandatory and they had to buy them from their money because the govt has spent all money in buying MLAs. Did the government even tried to distribute as many masks as it could. Was there any fort to provide any relief to the dying people on the road? The govt only knew that lockdown will solve the problem. After the lockdown, the contractor fired the worker without giving his salary. After he came home his wife told him that the landlord had told them to vacate the room. When he went out to buy bread from the shop, the police beat him and broke his hand.he wanted to buy medicine for his wife but had no money. No help was coming up. So he decided to leave Delhi on his bicycle with his child and wife. Only insensitive persons like secularlogic will be outraged at the govts criticism.
    By Arshad - 3/30/2020 9:42:45 PM

  • After giving the logic, the secular logic comes to the main point: the government was right.  I meant that the lockdown was worse than the no- lockdown. He mentioned some cases of sneezing to prove his point. I said when people were goingto their offices as routine they were not in chaos. They took precautionary measures when they were not in chaotic conditions. At least there was some discipline left until the lockdown. After that public gathered on roads, on border and on bus terminal in thousands spreading infection. You see that the cases of infection shot up by 100 every day after 24th. And why to talk about tablighi jamat there were gomutra parties and pots and pans beating ceremony on the roads where people were dancing. The problem with you people that you cannot bear any criticism of the party. As long as someone criticised Muslims, it's fine but as soon someone criticised the PM it outraged your modesty. Kanika Kapoor, scindias family and Shivraj Chouhan also broke discipline. Muslims themselves are criticising Tablighee jamat. After the state borders also being sealed crowd will also gather at state borders as those returning home will reach the borders. And infection will spread. I was talking of that discipline before lockdown. People were going about their routine business as usual and their was no chaos. But lockdown tdestroyed the little discipline that was left.

  • which world does mr Arshad live in? from where will govt get free masks gloves and sanitisers for 1.3 crore people? what was going on in discipline? there is no discipline even in lockdown, he is saying there was discipline before lockdown? TableeghiJamaat gathering with 1500 people was goin on inspite of lockdown,  now 200 of them  have to be quarantined. In muslim communities, cops who tried to enforce lockdown were manhandled. There is a video of women practicing to sneeze so they can go out and infect thousands if they are lucky enough to get infected themselves. An infosys employee - Muhammad something - was sacked because he posted a tweet urging the faithful to go cough and sneeze on everything.  In times like these, they are called emergencies, in case you dont know - there is no time to impose gradual restrictions. Measures have to be quick, no matter what the pain. The government is doing a stellar job. The Muslims, as usual, are doing their best to undo it. And then you wonder why you get what you get.

  • Everyone else will be blamed for the gross blunders and mismanagement of the center.
    By Ghulam Mohiyuddin - 3/30/2020 12:43:30 PM

  • Mr Ravi I personally feel that people were taking appropriate precautionary measures before lockdown. Life was normal and everything was going on in discipline. People only needed to be told to come out with face masks, gloves and maintain safe distance while in public. The government should have distributed free masks gloves, and sanitisers. And gradually other restrictions like suspending schools colleges, government offices should have been put. Infection increased many fold only after lockdown due to chaotic conditions and due to huge crowds at bus stand and Delhi border. Without doing proper homework, the government clamped lockdown causing a chain reaction which caused unimaginable hardships to the vulnerable sections like the daily wage earners. The government said that tpeople can go out to buy essential commodities but the police beat them when they went out. Finally the PM apologized formally but did not offer any respite or relief. It was only lip service. A country of 1.3 billion people cannot be governed with TV announcements.

  • I am more concerned about those trapped in surging crowd on the roads near stations. When they return their homes what will happen to them?
