Delhi HC Judge: “Ramdev’s ‘Sherbet Jihad’ Remark Shocks the Conscience of the Court” Slams
22.04.25
Televangelist Ramdev
PTI
-------
Ramdev’s counsel on Tuesday reportedly agreed to take down the yoga televangelist’s videos where he had made the “sherbet jihad” remark, after a Delhi High Court judge orally observed that the comment was “indefensible”.
“It shocks the conscience of the court. This is indefensible,” Justice Amit Bansal had remarked during the hearing of a suit filed by Hamdard, the makers of Rooh Afza, against Ramdev, the owner of Patanjali, as reported by legal news website Live Law.
Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing on behalf of Hamdard, said Ramdev’s comment was akin to hate-speech.
After the court warned of a strong order, Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar appeared on behalf of Patanjali and Ramdev and said the videos will be taken down, as reported by another legal news website, Bar and Bench.
The court reportedly told Ramdev to file an affidavit that he will not make such statements in future.
"He can hold these statements in head, not express," the court said, according to Bar and Bench.
The matter has been posted for its next hearing on May 1.
While promoting a rose sherbet from his company, Patanjali, earlier this month, Ramdev had claimed the money generated from the sales of “another sherbet” was used for constructing mosques and madrasahs.
Arguing in the matter, Rohatgi said this was a shocking case that went beyond the disparagement of Rooh Afza and was an attempt at communal divide.
Rohatgi said being a well-known person Ramdev could sell Patanjali products without disparaging other products.
Referring to a Supreme Court proceedings where a suo motu contempt was initiated against the Patanjali owners Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna, Rohatgi said they were asked to issue a public apology for issuing misleading advertisements and adverse comments against allopathic medicines in breach of undertaking given to the court.

Saudi Arabia ‘One of India’s Most Valued Partners, A Trusted Friend and A Strategic Ally,’ PM Modi Tells Arab News

-----------
JEDDAH: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the “limitless potential” of India’s growing ties with Saudi Arabia as he arrives in Jeddah for a two-day visit, his third to the Kingdom since 2016. In an exclusive interview with Arab News, he described the Kingdom as “a trusted friend and strategic ally,” emphasizing how bilateral relations had expanded significantly since the creation of the Strategic Partnership Council in 2019.
“Our partnership has limitless potential,” Modi said. “In a world full of uncertainties, our bond stands strong, as a pillar of stability.” He praised Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman’s leadership, calling him “a strong advocate of our bilateral ties” and a visionary who has inspired global admiration through the reforms under Vision 2030.
“Every time I have met him, His Royal Highness has left a deep impression on me. His insights, his forward-thinking vision, and his passion for fulfilling the aspirations of his people are truly remarkable,” he said.
Highlighting shared economic ambitions, Modi noted that trade between the two countries had grown even amid global challenges, with energy, agriculture and fertilizers as key sectors. He welcomed deeper integration of Saudi and Indian businesses, particularly in emerging sectors like green hydrogen and technology. “Indian companies have also maintained a strong presence across various sectors in Saudi Arabia,” he said.
Modi congratulated the Kingdom for winning the bids to host World Expo 2030 and FIFA World Cup 2034, describing the dual successes as a matter of “immense pride.” He also pointed to growing defense cooperation and landmark joint military exercises as signs of increasing strategic trust.
On the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC), launched during the G20 Summit in September 2023, Modi said the project would be “a key catalyst of commerce, connectivity and growth in the entire region.”
In a statement, the Indian government said the visit “reflects the importance India attaches to its bilateral relationship with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”
Q. Saudi-India ties are on an upswing. How do you assess the progress made in the strengthening of bilateral relations since the establishment of the Strategic Partnership Council in 2019?
A. First of all, I want to thank His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman for his kind invitation. I am delighted to be here on my third visit. I take great pride in our relations with Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is one of India’s most valued partners — a maritime neighbor, a trusted friend and a strategic ally.
Our connection is not new. It is rooted in civilizational exchanges that go back to centuries. From ideas to trade, there has been a constant flow between our two great nations.
Our relations have been on an upward trajectory since 2014. I fondly recall that in 2016, I had the honor of receiving The Order of King Abdulaziz from His Majesty King Salman.
The formation of the Strategic Partnership Council in 2019 marked a major milestone. Since then, cooperation between us has expanded across many sectors. And let me tell you, this is just the beginning. Our partnership has limitless potential.
What anchors our relationship is mutual trust and goodwill. In a world full of uncertainties, our bond stands strong, as a pillar of stability. I truly believe these are promising times for India-Saudi Arabia ties. And, I must say, the Saudi leadership has played a vital role in strengthening this partnership.
India and Saudi Arabia will keep moving forward together — for peace, progress and prosperity, not just for our people, but for the entire world.
Q. Given your previous seven meetings with Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, how would you characterize the personal rapport between the leadership of both countries? Has his rapport influenced the bilateral relationship in any way?
A. Every time I have met him, His Royal Highness has left a deep impression on me. His insights, his forward-thinking vision, and his passion for fulfilling the aspirations of his people are truly remarkable.
Under his leadership, Saudi Arabia has undergone tremendous social and economic transformation. The reforms he has undertaken have not just inspired the region, but also caught the attention of the entire world. One can see the transformational changes in the country under Vision 2030 in a very short period.
I value the personal warmth and trust we share. And, yes, this personal rapport has naturally translated into how both countries give priority to our partnership. He is a strong advocate of our bilateral ties. He has been a great supporter of the Indian diaspora in Saudi Arabia and our people living in Saudi Arabia deeply admire him.
When we talk, we focus on making this partnership future-ready. Jeddah has had a special connection with India. For centuries, this famed city has been one of the principal arteries for our trade and people-to-people exchanges. As a gateway to Makkah, for ages, our pilgrims have walked the by-lanes of Jeddah on their holy journey for Hajj and Umrah.
Q. Saudi Arabia is India’s fifth-largest trading partner. What initiatives are being considered to further diversify and expand this economic partnership so that both countries can better face challenges together?
A. Our economic ties are as old as the monsoon winds. Given the proximity of our nations and the complementarity of our economies, there is a natural connect. That is why even during global challenges, our trade ties have not just survived, but they have grown.
While sectors like energy, agriculture and fertilizers are the main areas of our trade, efforts at diversification have borne fruits. Indian businesses and Saudi industry are building stronger connections.
Building stronger connect between our businesses and industry and enhancing investment partnership is adding resilience to this relationship. Saudi Arabia is a leading energy partner for India. Likewise, India is contributing to food security in Saudi Arabia. I am told people in Saudi Arabia prefer Indian rice! India too loves Saudi dates.
I also see several complementarities between Saudi Vision 2030 and India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 (Developed India 2047 initiative).
Bilateral investments between our countries have also been increasing. Today, the Indian growth story offers immense opportunities for Saudi majors to invest and partner, from space economy to global supply chain collaborations.
Indian companies have also maintained a strong presence across various sectors in Saudi Arabia. They are playing a crucial role in the realization of Saudi Vision 2030.
Our goal is to enhance this connect.
India and Saudi Arabia are working on a Bilateral Investment Treaty. The proposed Free Trade Agreement between India and GCC has immense potential to transform the economic relationship between India and Saudi Arabia, and the region in general.
Q. With Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 emphasizing infrastructure development, what opportunities do you see for Indian companies to contribute to and benefit from these projects, including Riyadh Expo 2030 and Saudi FIFA World Cup 2034?
A. As a close friend, India rejoices in Saudi Arabia’s stellar achievements. I would like to congratulate the people of Saudi Arabia and its leadership for being chosen as the host for World Expo in 2030 and FIFA World Cup in 2034.
It is a matter of immense pride for any country to host two marquee global events within a span of four years. It speaks volumes of the leadership of His Royal Highness and his vision.
These mega events will boost the local economy. They offer opportunities for Indian companies as well. Our companies, as you are aware, have built a global reputation for their quality, competitiveness and efficiency.
I understand that the Indian companies already have a strong participation in Saudi infrastructure and technology sectors. They are also creating value in various mega and giga projects as part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.
I also invite Saudi companies to take advantage of the remarkable opportunities in India as part of our Viksit Bharat journey. They can participate in the growth of India’s next-generation infrastructure, logistics, renewable energy, healthcare, utilities, innovation, start-ups and “blue economy” sectors.
Deeper engagements and two-way collaborations between companies of both countries will go a long way in strengthening the bilateral economic partnership.
Q: Given Saudi Arabia’s role as a key supplier of crude oil and petroleum products to India, how do you envision the future of energy collaboration between the two nations, especially in the context of global energy transitions?
A. Energy has been an important pillar of our economic partnership. Saudi Arabia has been a strong and reliable energy partner for us. It is one of our top suppliers of crude and other petroleum products. As India seeks to become a developed country, our energy demands will continue to grow. And Saudi Arabia will remain a close partner in our energy security. As strategic partners we agree that our energy cooperation is not limited to mere buyer-seller relationships. We are also exploring joint projects in refineries and petrochemicals.
The world is also witnessing a gradual shift toward cleaner and more sustainable energy resources. India is moving ahead with an ambitious target for green transition. We are confident of achieving 500 GW renewable energy target by 2030.
Even in this journey, there is an immense scope of collaboration with Saudi Arabia. This includes the areas of supply chains, circular economy, energy efficiency and green hydrogen. As partners in the International Solar Alliance, both countries can work toward innovative solutions for future energy needs.
During the New Delhi G20 Summit in 2023, along with His Royal Highness, we launched the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) initiative. We are now working on feasibility studies for electricity grid interconnectivity between India and Saudi Arabia and the wider region. As you can see, we are moving ahead with the vision of a comprehensive energy partnership between our two countries.
Q. Saudi-India defense engagements and joint exercises have been steadily increasing. What are the key areas of focus for defense and security cooperation in the coming years?
A. We consider Saudi Arabia as a force of positivity and stability in the region. As maritime neighbors, India and Saudi Arabia share a natural interest in safeguarding peace and stability in the region.
The growing defense and security engagement and collaboration between the two countries is a reflection of deep mutual trust. It is also a testament to our shared commitment to regional stability, and our mutual resolve to address the evolving challenges in our extended neighborhood.
We have seen steady progress in security cooperation. This includes areas such as counterterrorism, combating extremism, disrupting terror financing and tackling drug trafficking. We are also exploring new frontiers of cooperation in cybersecurity, recognizing its growing importance in today’s interconnected world.
Last year, we achieved an important milestone: the first-ever joint exercises between the two land forces. These were complemented by two successful rounds of the joint naval exercise Al-Mohed Al-Hindi, which were held in 2021 and 2023.
Both of us support deeper defense-industry collaboration. Over the past decade, defense manufacturing has taken deeper roots in India. Today, there is a strong military industrial complex with the ability to manufacture quality ammunition, small arms, tanks, armored carriers. For the air force, we are building drones, advanced light helicopters and fighter jets. For the navy, we have the capacity to build patrol boats, submarines, and even aircraft carriers.
We are not just fulfilling our own needs. India has also emerged as an important supplier of defense equipment to more than 100 countries around the world.
I am glad that we have been able to meet some needs of the armed forces in Saudi Arabia. We support deeper engagement between private-sector players from both countries. We would welcome Saudi investment into the defense manufacturing sector in India that has been opened for private investment.
Q. The IMEEC initiative that was announced in September 2023 in New Delhi is an ambitious project to connect India and Europe through the Middle East. What are the key elements of IMEEC, and how is India working with Saudi Arabia to achieve the goals envisioned under this initiative?
A. India and Saudi Arabia, along with European Union, the UAE, France, Germany, Italy and the US, jointly launched the India Middle East Europe Corridor initiative in New Delhi in September 2023.
This corridor will define the future of connectivity in all forms for centuries to come. It will become the key catalyst of commerce, connectivity and growth in the entire region. The corridor will enhance connectivity in all its forms, be it physical or digital.
It will facilitate development of resilient and dependable supply chains, increase trade accessibility and improve trade facilitation. The corridor will increase efficiencies, reduce costs, enhance economic unity, generate jobs and lower greenhouse gas emission, resulting in a transformative integration of Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
Both India and Saudi Arabia have a key role to play in the success of this corridor. We are committed to working with our Saudi partners to realize the vision of connectivity, including multi-modal logistic connectivity, data connectivity and electrical grid connectivity. We are working on clean and green hydrogen and related supply chains under this initiative.
I visualize this initiative has a transformational potential for humanity. It can be the new Silk Route of the 21st century that will bring benefit to the generations to come.
Q. The Indian community of 2.7 million in Saudi Arabia has been praised by you as a binding force in bilateral ties. How does your government plan to further support and engage with the Indian diaspora in the Kingdom?
A. First of all, let me put it on record that we are deeply grateful to Their Royal Highnesses, King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, for the patronage they have provided to the Indian community in Saudi Arabia. We can never forget how they took care of the Indians as one of their own during the difficult times of the COVID pandemic.
Indians have a very important character — whichever country they go, they make it their home. They are law abiding, dedicated and professional to the core. They carry with them the values of empathy, compassion and care.
This very nature earns them respect of their host country. Saudi Arabia is no exception. Whenever I have met His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, he has praised the Indian community and appreciated their significant contribution to the economic growth of the Kingdom. He has even said that they are part of the Saudi family. These words of praise always fill my heart with pride and joy.
For my government, the members of the Indian diaspora are the “rashtradoots” (national ambassadors). The 4Cs — Care, Connect, Celebrate and Contribute — is the motto of our engagement with our diaspora. Their safety, welfare and well-being is paramount for us.
Over the past decade we have launched many initiatives, including insurance schemes, scholarships for their children, and skilling programs. We have established mechanisms for safe and legal migration. The 2.7 million vibrant Indian community in Saudi Arabia is a living bridge connecting our two countries. I commend them for not only preserving their values and traditions, but also promoting them.
I eagerly look forward to reconnecting with the Indian diaspora during this visit.
Q: How do you see religious tourism, cultural and educational exchanges developing as a component of Saudi-India bilateral relations? Do you foresee India’s IITs and IIMs opening campuses in Saudi Arabia, along the lines of IIT Delhi, Abu Dhabi campus?
A. Our people have interacted with each other since the days of “Kalila wa Dimna.” The growing cultural connect between our countries is indicative of the understanding and appreciation for each other.
As far as religious tourism is concerned, as you know we have a large Muslim population and they visit your beautiful country each year for Umrah and Hajj pilgrimage. We are grateful to the Saudi leadership for the continued assistance provided to Indian pilgrims. Yoga has gained considerable popularity in Saudi Arabia over the recent years, thanks to the encouragement and support of the Saudi government. We are also noticing a growing interest in cricket.
I am told that Arab broadcasters run dedicated channels with Indian content that are very popular in the Kingdom. There is also a wide following for Indian films and actors. India is hosting the first edition of the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit in Mumbai during May 1-4. We look forward to a strong participation from Saudi Arabia at the summit so that we can give new wings to our cultural and entertainment collaboration.
Educational cooperation is another promising area. Indian higher education institutions are recognized globally. They are ready to take up opportunities, as and when those arise in Saudi Arabia as well.
Finally, let me congratulate Arab News as it completes 50 years of its publication this year. I know Arab News has a special connection with Indians living in the Kingdom. Your media outlet is a strong symbol of our people-to-people ties. My best wishes to you as you continue to nourish India-Saudi Arabia friendship.

British "Hindu Extremists" Allying with Anti-Muslim Far-Right, Says UK Report
Apr 21, 2025
British Hindu groups allege that the article in the London-based newspaper is a 'factually flawed hit job' on the community.
-----------
A report in a British newspaper on alleged links between "Hindu extremists" and far-right groups has sparked a controversy with Hindu groups complaining to the UK's media watchdog. The Mail on Sunday article quoted a police intelligence report which British Hindu groups said lacked inputs and clarifications from the community. The media watchdog cleared the British newspaper, but the matter has now been escalated to its complaint's committee.
The Mail on Sunday on March 30 reported that British "Hindu extremists" were joining hands with far-right groups over their "shared anti-Muslim views".
Hindu groups in the UK called the report baseless and misleading and lodged a protest with the media watchdog.
The key area of concern for the Hindu groups was the explanation, "Hindu extremism — which is known as Hindutva," in the Mail on Sunday report.
Insight UK, an advocacy group, said, "This article is not just misleading; it is a textbook example of how biased framing, selective omission, and ideological lens can manufacture a moral panic around a peaceful religious community."
It called the article a "factually flawed hit job on British Hindus".
"The article repeatedly conflates Hindutva with 'extremism', reducing a rich philosophical tradition to a caricature. Hindutva, quite simply, is the outward expression of Hindu identity," Insight UK said on April 1.
The Hindu Community Organisations Group (HCOG) Leicester placed a formal complaint with the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO). The IPSO, however, has cleared the Mail on Sunday report, according to The Times of India.
The letter by HCOG Leicester was about the Mail's claims, which discussed British Hindu extremists forming alliances with far-right groups in Europe over their common hatred of Muslims, without "credible or verifiable evidence," TOI reported.
WHAT IS IN THE 'HINDU EXTREMIST' REPORT?
The intelligence report compiled by the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) was accessed by The Daily Mail's Sunday edition -- The Mail on Sunday. This report, written by the National Community Tension Team, came two months after the Home Office submitted its rapid sprint on extremism in Britain.
The rapid sprint mentioned Hindu nationalism and Khalistani extremism among nine emerging threats in the UK.
The inclusion of "Hindu nationalist extremism" as a threat follows the 2022 riots in Leicester when British Hindus and British Muslims of South Asian origin clashed after the India-Pakistan Asia Cup 2022 match on 28 August.
The intelligence report claimed that "extremists" are "feared to be interfering in British elections by telling Hindus which parties to vote for and which to avoid".
It also defined "Hindutva" as "a political movement distinct from Hinduism, which advocates the hegemony of Indian Hindus and the establishment of a monolithic Hindu rashtra or state in India," according to the report in The Mail on Sunday.
The report discussed a "realistic possibility" of an alliance of Hindutva supporters in the UK aligning themselves with British extremist right-wing organisations due to some "commonly shared beliefs, including anti-Muslim hatred".
It also stated that "Hindutva" may worsen community ties between Hindus and other faiths such as Muslims and Sikhs.
"Tensions between Hindu and Muslim communities in the UK are still evident, and the events in Leicester show how disinformation can play a role in offline action," it added.
The NPCC report further revealed that far-right activist Tommy Robinson has already met with some Hindu groups to "promote anti-Muslim campaigns." It also noted that his presence appeared to be welcomed by the Indian media and a minority of British Hindus.
UK PRESS REGULATOR RESPONDS TO HCOG COMPLAINTS
Insight UK said that the entire Mail on Sunday "sensationalist article" was based on a "confidential unreleased report" and didn't have "credible data" and didn't name organisations.
"No known UK-based Hindu advocacy body or temple has aligned with Robinson’s ideology or group. The article fails to cite a single formal alliance, resolution, co-sponsored event, or leader to substantiate this supposed connection," it said.
The formal complaint was lodged with IPSO by HCOG.
The IPSO refuted the complaints, saying the Mail was reporting on an NPCC report.
It even added the claim, "Norwegian terrorist Anders Breivik was inspired by Hindutva," reported TOI.
But the report by HCOG convenor Vinod Popat stated that the article had no input from British Hindus.
IPSO rejected the claim, saying, "Under the Editor's Code, the articles do not need to be balanced, nor do specific interested parties need to be consulted ahead... unless a published article includes significant inaccuracies."
IPSO asked Popat and HCOG to call the police if they felt the article incited religious hatred.
Popat has appealed his response to IPSO’s Complaints Committee. He has written that the article failed to "contextualise the credibility or status of the NPCC report and insinuates widespread community complicity, vilifying the whole community," according to the TOI report.

The Punjab Police and the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) eliminated over 10 terrorists in an operation in Mianwali's Makarwal area on Monday, said Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, terming it a "significant success" in the ongoing fight against terrorism.
In a statement issued from Islamabad, the interior minister paid glowing tribute to the brave personnel of Punjab Police and CTD who, in a high-stakes operation, eliminated more than ten terrorists.
He said the operation was not just a tactical success but a powerful message to all anti-state elements plotting against national peace and security.
"By sending more than 10 Khawarij terrorists to hell, Punjab Police and CTD have demonstrated exceptional resolve and professionalism," Naqvi remarked.
He further stated that such victories were crucial for ensuring lasting peace in the country and safeguarding the lives of innocent citizens.
The interior minister praised the courage and dedication of the officers involved, emphasising that their swift and decisive action had foiled the nefarious designs of the terrorists.
"I take immense pride in the bravery shown by the officers in this operation. Their efforts are truly commendable," he added.
Reiterating the government's unwavering stance against terrorism, Naqvi assured that all necessary resources would continue to be provided to law enforcement agencies to root out terrorism from its core.
"I extend heartfelt congratulations to the entire team of Punjab Police and CTD on this major achievement," he concluded.
Security in Mianwali and surrounding areas has been further enhanced following the operation.
Officials confirmed that intelligence-based operations will continue to ensure the complete elimination of terrorist networks operating within the region.
The country witnessed a sharp increase in terror attacks in January 2025, surging by 42% compared to the previous month, according to data released by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), a think tank.
The data revealed that at least 74 militant attacks were recorded nationwide, resulting in 91 fatalities, including 35 security personnel, 20 civilians, and 36 militants. Another 117 individuals sustained injuries, including 53 security forces personnel, 54 civilians, and 10 militants.
In Punjab, two militant attacks were reported, leaving one security official injured. On the last day of January, militants launched a major assault on a police check post in DG Khan’s Jhangi area, but security forces repelled the attack without any casualties. Sindh and the federal capital, Islamabad, each witnessed one attack, though neither resulted in fatalities.

More Than 150 Caves Reveal Some of Earth’s Oldest Secrets in Saudi Arabia
April 21, 2025
The Saudi Geological Survey is actively working to uncover and study these sites as part of the national strategy. (SPA)
------------
RIYADH: They may look dark and forbidding, but caves across various regions of Saudi Arabia are shedding new light on some of Earth’s oldest secrets.
According to the Saudi Geological Survey, caves and geological features in the Kingdom are unique natural treasures providing a vital foundation for scientific research.
More than 150 caves have been recognized for their significant scientific value, with some serving as natural records of the planet’s geological and climatic history, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
Caves also have a growing role in the development of sustainable ecotourism, the Saudi Geological Survey said.
The organization is working to uncover and study these sites as part of the national strategy, the SPA added.
Studies offer precise scientific evidence of environmental changes the region has undergone over thousands of years, including rare plant and animal remains from species that become extinct due to natural shifts.
Tariq Aba Al-Khail, spokesperson for the Saudi Geological Survey, said that the organization enables researchers and specialists in geosciences, archaeology, and paleobiology to study these caves within a structured scientific framework.
He highlighted the organization’s role as a reference for accurate geological data and its commitment to building partnerships with academic and research institutions to strengthen the knowledge base and raise community awareness about the value of these natural resources.

‘Godse gun’ to counter ‘lungi’ jibe: Assam Congress hits back at BJP with scathing retort
Umanand Jaiswal
22.04.25
The Opposition Congress on Monday said the BJP should adopt the gun used by Nathuram Godse to assassinate Mahatma Gandhi as its election symbol, intensifying its attack on the ruling party ahead of next month’s two-phase panchayat polls in Assam.
Assam PCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah made the remarks at Biswanath in response to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s suggestion during a campaign rally in Upper Assam that the Congress should adopt the lungi as its party symbol.
The lungi — a cotton lower garment commonly worn by men — is often associated in Assam with migrant Bengali-speaking Muslims, particularly in Upper and Central Assam, where they are frequently portrayed by the BJP as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. The ruling party regularly attempts to brand Congress as a representative of their interests during elections.
Responding sharply, Borah said while campaigning for the May 2 and 7 polls: “If Congress has to adopt the lungi, let me tell you, for us, lungi, dhoti, pyjama and trousers are all the same. I wear all of them. Our perspective is different. Most people ask me — why is the BJP’s symbol a lotus? It should be the gun that Nathuram Godse used to assassinate Mahatma Gandhi. BJP-RSS politics started with Godse’s bullets!”
He added, “Therefore, Himanta Biswa Sarma should urge his central leadership to adopt the gun Godse used — the one with which he pumped three bullets into Gandhi — as the BJP’s party symbol.”
Godse shot Gandhi on January 30, 1948, using an Italian-made Beretta M1934 pistol. He was later sentenced to death. Godse was known to be associated with the RSS and Hindu Mahasabha.
Earlier, during a rally in Tinsukia district, Sarma criticised the Congress for lacking vision and said their only welfare schemes were the free distribution of lungis, dhotis, mosquito nets and thread. In contrast, he said, the BJP-led government had launched schemes focused on women’s empowerment and higher education.
“Congress means lungi, Congress means suta (yarn), kambal (blanket), dhoti and athuwa (mosquito net)... They do not understand Assam,” Sarma had said.

Nishikant Dubey digs in hate heels as BJP avoids disciplinary action against 'hatchet man'
J.P. Yadav
22.04.25
BJP parliamentarian Nishikant Dubey has made it clear he stands by his vitriolic comments against the Supreme Court and a former chief election commissioner, with his party so far eschewing disciplinary action despite distancing itself from his salvo at the top court.
Dubey mocked Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday as someone in “chains” for indirectly questioning the four-time MP’s comment that the Supreme Court was “inciting religious wars in the country”.
Earlier, Dubey had defended himself for calling former poll panel chief S.Y. Quraishi a “Muslim commissioner” rather than an “election commissioner” by arguing he was merely endorsing the views of party general secretary (organisation) B.L. Santosh, the RSS representative in the BJP.
Dubey is widely seen as a hatchet man who makes himself useful to the party brass by targeting opponents and critics with scurrilous remarks that they cannot themselves afford to mouth.
While BJP president J.P. Nadda had delivered a mild warning to Dubey on Saturday for his attack on the apex court, Quraishi has been left to defend himself against what he has described as “hateful politics”.
Dubey targeted Sarma for his long post on X that referred to Nadda’s stand and said “the BJP has consistently upheld the independence and dignity of the judiciary as a cornerstone of India’s democracy”. Sarma went on to accuse the Congress of repeatedly insulting the judiciary.
Dubey replied to the chief minister by quoting an Urdu couplet by Fani Badayuni – ironical, considering Rightwing leaders’ allergy to Muslims and Urdu.
“Life is a compulsion and there is no way out of this compulsion. Alas, this imprisonment doesn’t require prison or chains,” the couplet says.
A senior BJP leader, Kailash Vijayvargiya, seemed to obliquely support Dubey’s broadside against the top court, in the garb of the advice that “sometimes, one should avoid speaking the truth”.
“The party has come out with the guidelines and I am with it. And, sometimes one should avoid speaking the truth... because everything has a boundary,” Vijayvargiya, a minister in Madhya Pradesh and the BJP’s former Bengal minder, told PTI on Sunday.
“Nishikant Dubey is my younger brother and he should avoid making such comments publicly.”
Dubey’s attack on the top court came two days after it had red-flagged some of the provisions of the Waqf Amendment Act.
Quraishi hits back
Quraishi responded to Dubey on Monday, without naming him, by saying some people were using religious identities as a staple for their politics of hate.
“I served on the constitutional post of election commissioner to the best of my ability and had a long and fulfilling career in the IAS. I believe in an idea of India where an individual is defined by his or her talents and contributions and not by their religious identities,” Quraishi told PTI.
“But I guess, for some, religious identities are a staple to forward their hateful politics. India has, is and will always stand up and fight for its constitutional institutions and principles.”
On his X handle, Quraishi quoted George Bernard Shaw, but without referring to Dubey: “‘I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides. The pig likes it’ - George Bernard Shaw.”
BJP leader Santosh, whom Dubey has cited to defend his own remarks on Quraishi, had earlier castigated the former CEC for his post that said the amended Waqf Act was “undoubtedly a blatantly sinister/ evil plan of the govt to grab Muslim lands”.
“Just remember that this man once headed the Election Commission of India. The Punya aggregated by our ancestors might be so huge that we still breathe democracy in spite of all these characters,” Santosh was quoted as saying to a newspaper.
“Land grabbing was the aim of the ‘Wakf by user’ clause, Quraishi Saab.”

‘Judge by talent, not religion’: Ex-CEC SY Quraishi after BJP MP calls him ‘Muslim commissioner’
Scroll Staff
22.04.25
A day after Bharatiya Janata Party MP Nishikant Dubey called former Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi a “Muslim commissioner”, the former poll panel head said on Monday that individuals should be judged by their contributions rather than their religious identities, PTI reported.
“But I guess, for some, religious identities are a staple to forward their hateful politics,” Quraishi further said. “India has, is and will always stand up and fight for its constitutional institutions and principles.”
Dubey had made the remarks about Quraishi in response to his comments about the Waqf Amendment Act passed on April 4. “The maximum number of Bangladeshi infiltrators were made voters in Santhal Pargana in Jharkhand during your tenure,” he claimed.
Dubey added: “Prophet Muhammad’s Islam came to India in 712. This land [waqf], before that, belonged to Hindus or tribals, Jains or Buddhists associated with that faith.”
A waqf is an endowment under Islamic law dedicated to a religious, educational or charitable cause. Each state has a waqf board led by a legal entity vested with the power to acquire, hold and transfer property.
The Waqf Amendment Act curbs the authority of waqf boards and allows greater government control over them. Several Opposition leaders, including those from the Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen have challenged the Act before the Supreme Court, alleging that it violates the right to equality and the freedom to manage religious affairs.
Echoing these concerns, Quraishi said on April 17 that the Waqf Amendment Act was “undoubtedly a blatantly sinister/evil plan of the govt to grab Muslim lands”.
“I’m sure SC [Supreme Court] will call it out,” the former chief election commissioner said on social media. “Misinformation by the mischievous propaganda machine has done its job well.”
Dubey’s remarks about Quraishi on Sunday came a day after the BJP MP said that the Supreme Court was responsible for “inciting religious wars” in the country.
Dubey cited the court’s decisions to decriminalise homosexuality in 2018 and the striking down of section 66(a) of the Information Technology Act in 2021.
The MP from Jharkhand’s Godda claimed that the court had decriminalised homosexuality despite “all [religious] communities considering it wrong”. He also claimed that section 66(a) of the IT Act was necessary to stop the misuse of online platforms to share objectionable content.

Haryana Police arrested Inspector Radhey Shyam for harassing Muslims and custodial torture
April 22, 2025
On Saturday, Haryana Police arrested Inspector Radhey Shyam, a suspended Station House Officer (SHO), in connection with a case of custodial torture at Palwal city police station. The incident, which dates back to December 2024, involved the alleged brutal abuse of an accused fraud suspect from Rajasthan.
Instead of conducting a lawful investigation, Radhey Shyam—already known for previous allegations of custodial violence and a pattern of targeting Muslims—allegedly subjected the detainee to severe torture. According to the complaint, he beat the accused, forced him to consume chilli paste, and inserted the substance into his private parts using an injection.
An internal investigation concluded on April 16 found Radhey Shyam guilty of serious misconduct, prompting the Inspector General of the Rewari Range to suspend him the same day. However, he remains under scrutiny in a separate inquiry involving two cybercrime suspects who also alleged custodial abuse.
Radhey Shyam previously headed the Special Cow Protection Task Force in Nuh and is said to be closely associated with right-wing Hindu groups such as the Bajrang Dal and individuals like Bittu Bajrangi, who has a history of inciting violence against Muslims in the region.
Senior Congress leader and Nuh MLA Aftab Ahmed welcomed the arrest, stating, “Radhey Shyam is a habitual offender. He has committed horrific abuses, especially targeting Muslims. His removal is a necessary step toward justice. Those supporting him are defending unlawful actions.”
Despite the suspension, Hindutva organizations have reacted aggressively. Bittu Bajrangi, a self-styled cow vigilante previously convicted in lynching cases, announced plans for state-wide protests. He accused political leaders like Aftab Ahmed of pressuring authorities into suspending Radhey Shyam and claimed that such actions hinder efforts to combat cow smuggling.
“If our demands aren’t met by Sunday, we’ll block the Mathura Road highway with public demonstrations,” Bajrangi warned. While he claims not to know Shyam personally, he expressed support for his past actions against alleged cow smuggling.
The case continues to stir tensions, highlighting communal divides and raising serious concerns about custodial violence and political interference in law enforcement. — With Agencies Inputs

RSS organises arms training at Christian College campus in Kerala; SFI calls it “unconstitutional and dangerous”
April 22, 2025
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh organised an arms training camp at Mar Ivanios College ground in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram sparking controversy over the grounds on which it was permitted.
The training which began on April 17 was organised for a RSS Officers’ Training Camp slated for May 2. After a media channel named MediaOne released a video of the footage, the incident came to be known and sparked objections. It is yet to be confirmed whether the college management or the church authorities approved the camp.
Criticising the college management for organising the training camp, the Student Federation of India (SFI) stated, “Student groups are not even allowed to bring flags to campus. How come an arms training camp by the RSS is allowed?” The organisation’s district committee said that the arms training is unconstitutional and dangerous. In the statement released by the body, it alleged, “RSS is trying to divide educational spaces and create unrest.”
While cases were registered against Muslims for wearing a black band in silent opposition against the Waqf Bill, the police is yet to take any action against the organizers and the college authorities.

Seven Muslims arrested for posters calling for boycott of Israeli products in UP
April 22, 2025
Seven individuals were arrested in Sambhal district’s Narauli town in Uttar Pradesh for posting posters in solidarity with Palestine. The posters included the list of products to be boycotted which fund or support Israel. The posters also allegedly called Muslims to buy from Muslims.
Asim, Saif, Rahees, Matloob, Fardeen, Arman and Arbaz were arrested after analysing the CCTV footage and by speaking to them, confirmed by the police.
The right wing group, Bajrang Dal reacted to the incident sharply alleging that the posters were not just in solidarity with Palestinians but were a deliberate attempt to disrupt communal harmony. Nitin Sharma, a local Bajrang Dal member claimed, “These are not just posters. They embody a harmful mentality that’s spreading through the district. We are witnessing attempts to incite communal divisions by urging Muslims to buy only from Muslims.”
Sharma also threatened that his organisation and other right wing groups would take matters in their own hands if the authorities do not take the “necessary steps.” However, police are yet to specify the sections under which the individuals have been booked.
Meanwhile, the death toll in Gaza has risen to 51,200 as Israel kills 39 more in the last 24 hours. With global support for Palestine as Israel continues to unleash its deadly attacks on Palestinians, the incident has sparked controversy with many raising objections to the members of right wing groups for alleging that the posters were an attempt to destroy peace and harmony in the district.

‘Discriminatory’: Muslim body in Gujarat to launch month-long state-wide protests against Waqf Act
April 22, 2025
Calling the Waqf Act “discriminatory” and “a scheme to encroach on Muslim Waqf properties”, the Gujarat Muslim Hit Rakshak Samiti on Monday announced to launch month-long state-wide protests against the Waqf Act in Ahmedabad starting Tuesday.
The members of the Gujarat Muslim Hit Rakshak Samiti — an umbrella body of different organisations of the community in state — alleged that the Gujarat government is attempting to “suppress their peaceful protests by denying them permission” to do so unlike other states.
“The state committee Monday discussed the issue of Waqf Act… (it) is completely discriminatory, violates the fundamental rights guaranteed in the Constitution of India and is a scheme to encroach on Muslim Waqf properties. The committee has prepared a state-wide programme. We will launch the protest in the form of a ‘silent human chain’ on Tuesday evening near Nehru Bridge in Ahmedabad, with men on one side and women on one other, holding placards,” Ahmedabad Jamaat-e-Islami Hind president Iqbal Mirza said while addressing the media on Monday.
Stressing on denial of permissions for peaceful protests across the state, Mirza, who is in the administrative body of the Samiti said, “We are still awaiting permission for Tuesday’s silent protest. If denied, we will submit our representations to the city police commissioner and DGP. Recently we were denied permission for similar peaceful protests in Himmatnagar and Dholka. Peaceful protests are allowed in many states but not in Gujarat. If these attempts of suppressing our voice will continue we will move the Gujarat High Court.”
Sharing details about the protests, Mirza said, “We have chalked out plans for peaceful protests… dharna in bigger cities, switching off all lights for 30 minutes, press conferences in 50 cities starting from Ahmedabad today (Monday) and Vadodara Tuesday…even Jail Bharo Andolan.”
The Gujarat Muslim Hit Rakshak Samiti alleged that the ruling party “used its power to pass arbitrary and discriminatory amendments to the Waqf Act against the wishes of crores of Muslims, other minorities and non-Muslims”.
“We completely reject these amendments, as they not only violate the fundamental rights of the largest minority community in the country but also reveal the malicious intentions of the government to gain complete control over the management and establishment of Waqf. These amendments have deprived the Muslim community, in the country, of the freedom to freely practice their religious beliefs,” the association said in a statement.
“Several religious and community organisations, including the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, and Muslim intellectuals made oral and written submissions to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) constituted by the Parliament. Five crore Muslims in the country completely opposed these amendments by sending emails to the JPC Committee. However, these representations were ignored. Now, as a last resort, we have taken this matter to the Supreme Court,” Muhammad Tahir M Hakim, who is member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, added.

How a fake news story about Islamist anti-dog-walking leaflets circulated in Canada and the UK
Nathan Gallo
21 April 2025
Did people really post Islamist anti-dog leaflets in Canada and the United Kingdom? Since early April, several photos of leaflets and fliers asking people to no longer walk their dogs out of respect for their Muslim neighbours have inflamed Islamophobic discussions online. However, all of these photos are old and were flagged as potential fakes even when they first came out. We take a look at how three different fake news items have circulated.
"Do not walk your dog here! Muslims do not like dogs. This is an islamic area now,” reads a flyer shown in a photo posted on X on April 15 by Ashlea Simon, the chairman of the British far-right political party Britain First.
"I’d prefer to keep the dogs and deport the Islamists if I’m honest,” she said in her post, which garnered more than 300,000 views in two days.
Quite a few British social media accounts shared the photo, showing a piece of A4 paper taped to a sign near a park.
“Should we be told where we can walk our dogs?" reads a post by the X account Simon Scissorhands, who describes himself as a “proud patriot” in his bio.
A poster from back in 2014, of murky origins
But where did this flyer come from? It turns out that this flyer isn’t recent. The conservative account Update News already shared it back in July 2024 in a post that garnered more than 1.5 million views on X.
However, the article did provide more information about the photo, which the article reported was taken in the borough of Tower Hamlets in East London.

Where does the UK media draw the line on platforming far-right voices?
21ST APRIL
By Steph Brawn
Welcome to this week’s Media Watch! Remember you can get this newsletter straight into your inbox every week by clicking the banner above.
On BBC Newsnight last week, an intriguing concept was raised by former BBC presenter Matthew Stadlen as he criticised the platforming of anti-Muslim “extremist” Douglas Murray on the programme.
As he expressed his concern about the BBC interviewing the assistant editor of The Spectator – who previously accused ex-first minister Humza Yousaf of “infiltrating” the UK political system – he mentioned how the Overton window had shifted “so significantly” that Murray had been given an eight-minute interview on prime time television.
In a video podcast with The Rubin Report – a conservative US political talk show – in 2023, Murray called Yousaf the “First Minister of Gaza” and described his Palestinian wife Nadia El-Nakla as a “nasty piece of work”.
Stadlen said of him appearing on Newsnight: "Imagine just for a moment being one of the millions of British Muslims, law-abiding British Muslims, watching him say those things."
Stadlen said he didn’t want to criticise the BBC for bringing Murray on, but seemed to suggest the mainstream media was at a tricky juncture where far-right voices have now become so acceptable to the public, major broadcasters are being left with little choice but to platform them.
The Overton window is the range of subjects and arguments deemed politically acceptable to the mainstream population at a given time. It is a term named after American policy analyst Joseph Overton, who proposed that the political viability of an idea depends mainly on whether it falls within an acceptability range, rather than on the individual preferences of politicians using the term or concept.
According to Overton, the window frames the range of policies that a politician may recommend without appearing too extreme to gain or keep public office given the climate of public opinion at that particular time.
What Stadlen said left me pondering what seems to be a chicken and egg situation; does the media feed the public or does the public feed the media? And how much should one feed the other?
As journalists we have to have our ear to the ground on what concerns the public, who they most want to hear from, and the questions they want answering.
A series of polls now have confirmed the rapid rise in support for Reform, with them now predicted to return more MPs than Labour and the Tories.
In Scotland this week, a cross-party summit is being held on tackling the rise of the far right, which the Tories are not even attending. Reform's sudden hold on society is unquestionable, like it or not.
There was a time when there was widespread criticism of Reform UK leader Nigel Farage being extensively platformed when he had had no electoral success to speak of but, as painful as it may be, the Overton window does seem to have shifted so much that we’re going to have deal with Farage on our TV screens in the years to come.
But while more populist politics may have become acceptable to society, where do mainstream media institutions like the BBC draw the line?
While there is a responsibility to platform the figures people want to hear from, is there not is also a responsibility to protect them from misinformation and harmful voices?
And while some may feel they have no choice but to platform hard-right or right-wing voices, isn’t there at least a responsibility to robustly challenge what they say?
These are questions media institutions are going to be grappling with a lot in the months to come in what is becoming an increasingly hostile political environment, and it will be fascinating to see which broadcasters and publications become effortlessly subservient to the people and which ones choose to stand up for what is right.

Nationalities of foreign criminals to be published
22 April 2025
The nationalities of foreign criminals living in the UK will be published for the first time under plans to be unveiled later.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is understood to have ordered officials to publish data by the end of the year, showing the nationalities and crimes of those awaiting deportation.
The latest official data shows there were more than 19,000 foreign offenders awaiting deportation at the end of last year, up from almost 18,000 when the Conservatives left office in July.
Tuesday's commitment to publish nationality data about foreign criminals is - according to the Conservatives - evidence that Labour "buckled" after the Tories pressured the government to disclose the figures.
In response government sources insist the move was only possible because Cooper ordered Home Office statisticians to overhaul their systems.
Foreign nationals sentenced to 12 months or more in prison are subject to automatic deportation.
The home secretary has the power to deport people who receive a shorter sentence if she decides their presence in the UK is not conducive to the public good.
Home Office sources blame the increase in foreign criminals awaiting deportation on early releases due to prison overcrowding, instability in some countries making deportations difficult and a litany of appeals against deportation on human rights grounds.
The rise came despite more offenders being deported since Labour came to power.
Home Office figures are expected to show the main three nationalities for foreign criminals living in the community are Albanians, Romanians and Poles.
It is understood their most common offences were the production of drugs, theft and robbery, and acts of violent assault.
Government sources insist the change has only come about because ministers have addressed an issue that their Conservative predecessors ignored.
A Home Office source said: "Not only are we deporting foreign criminals at a rate never seen when Chris Philp and Robert Jenrick were in charge at the Home Office, but we will also be publishing far more information about that cohort of offenders than the Tories ever did."
The source added: "We want to ensure the public is kept better informed about the number of foreign criminals awaiting deportation, where they are from and the crimes they have committed."
Welcoming the news, shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick said: "We will finally see the hard reality that mass migration is fuelling crime across our country. Frankly, the public deserved to know this long ago."

Putin reacts to EU threats over Victory Day
21 Apr, 2025
Russian President Vladimir Putin has commended the courage of European leaders who have indicated they will travel to Moscow for events commemorating the 80th anniversary of victory in World War II, despite pressure on them from EU officials.
Last week, the bloc’s top diplomat and former Estonian prime minister, Kaja Kallas, warned the leaders of EU member and candidate states against flying to Russia to take part, recommending instead that they visit Kiev to show solidarity with Ukraine. Other EU officials have reportedly threatened to derail membership bids for candidate countries whose leaders defy Brussels on the matter.
Journalists asked Putin to comment on the reports after the All-Russian Municipal Service Award ceremony in Moscow on Monday.
“Those who are going to come to Russia have much more courage than those who are hiding behind someone’s back and trying to threaten others,” he replied.
“In this case, [threatening] those who are going to celebrate the historical merits of people who gave their lives in the fight against Nazism,” Putin said.
According to Kallas, participation in this year’s events in Moscow “will be not taken lightly.”
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, the only EU member state leader who has promised to attend, blasted the statement as outright “disrespectful.”
“Is Ms. Kallas’s warning a form of blackmail or a signal that I will be punished?” he wrote on X last week.
“The year is 2025, not 1939,” he added.
The president of EU candidate Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, similarly indicated that he would not change his plans in the face of pressure from Brussels.
“I have not changed my decision... Eight months ago, I announced my visit to Moscow, publicly,” he said last week, according to Serbian media.
Moscow has extended multiple invitations to this year’s landmark celebrations, including to the heads of China, India, and Brazil, as well as a number of other international leaders.
Victory Day is one of the most important national holidays in Russia. The event is celebrated annually on May 9 to mark the 1945 triumph of the USSR over Nazi Germany and its allies, and to honor the estimated 26.6 million deaths the Soviet Union suffered in World War II. Around 18 million were civilian deaths.

6 Terrorists Killed In Two Separate Ibos In KP’s Waziristan Districts: ISPR
Umar Bacha
April 21, 2025
Security forces killed six terrorists in two separate engagements in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Waziristan districts, the military’s media wing said on Monday.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the intelligence-based operations (IBO) were conducted on Sunday and today, with one in the general area of Razmak in North Waziristan District.
The ISPR said troops effectively engaged the terrorists at their location during the operation because of which five “were sent to hell”.
In another IBO in South Waziristan District, the ISPR said security forces “effectively neutralised” terrorist ringleader Zabiullah alias Zakran, who was actively involved in numerous terrorist activities against security forces, as well as the targeted killing of innocent civilians, and was highly wanted by law enforcement agencies.
The ISPR added that sanitisation operations were being conducted to eliminate any other terrorists found in the areas. “Security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out the menace of terrorism from the country,” the statement said.
Pakistan has witnessed an uptick in terror activities over the past year, especially in KP and Balochistan, after the proscribed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.
Faced with increasing attacks by militants, especially in KP and Balochistan, security forces have also intensified counterterrorism operations.
11 terrorists killed, several injured in separate operations in Punjab, KP.
Earlier, officials said at least 11 terrorists were killed and several others injured after police conducted separate operations in Makarwal area of Punjab’s Mianwali and South Waziristan.
According to a statement issued by the police today, the Mianwali police and the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) conducted a successful joint operation against terrorists in Makarwal, killing at least 10 of them and injuring several others.
“A resident of the area was also injured in the operation due to firing by the terrorists, and was consequently moved to the hospital for treatment,” the statement read.
“The operation against the terrorists was carried out under the supervision of the Regional Police Officer Muhammad Shahzad Asif Khan and the Mianwali District Police Officer (DPO) Akhtar Farooq,” it added.
It continued that DPO Farooq, other policemen, CTD officers and the department’s personnel “remained completely unhurt”.
While quoting Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Usman Anwar, the statement read that the provincial police chief congratulated the Mianwali cops on their “brilliant success against the terrorists”.
“The Punjab police are on alert … the nefarious plans of the terrorists will be crushed to dust,” the Punjab police chief was quoted as saying.
In a separate statement, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi paid tribute to the Punjab police and CTD for killing the terrorists, stating that the law enforcement agencies “achieved a great success by bringing the terrorists to an exemplary end”.
“I am proud of the courage of the brave soldiers who foiled the nefarious intentions” of terrorists, Naqvi said.
“I congratulate the entire team of police and CTD for killing more than 10 terrorists,” he added.
According to a statement about a separate incident issued by the KP IGP’s office, “unidentified terrorists attacked the station house officer (SHO) of the Azam Warsak police station and a team of cops in the Kalosha area”.
“The SHO and the police team were on polio duty,” it added.
The statement read that “one terrorist was killed in an exchange of fire” that lasted for about 30 minutes. It continued that the remaining terrorists fled the scene.
The authorities recovered a sub-machine gun, a rocket launcher and two motorcycles from the assailants.
As per the statement, the slain terrorist was identified as “Afnan, who was carrying two identity cards, three ATM cards and a smartphone”.
It added that one of the recovered cards belonged to the terrorist, but the other one belonged to a police constable, who was martyred in an attack before Eidul Fitr. The constable’s case had been registered at the CTD police station in South Waziristan.
“Additional personnel and armoured personnel carriers have been dispatched to investigate the area and protect polio teams,” the statement read.
“KP IGP Zulfiqar Hameed has congratulated the police team and announced a reward,” it concluded.
Militant violence and security operations intensified in the country in March, with the number of militant attacks surpassing 100 for the first time since November 2014, according to a report by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies.
Pakistan ranked second in the Global Terrorism Index 2025, with the number of deaths in terrorist attacks rising by 45 per cent over the past year to 1,081.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Gulf Widens Despite Overtures
Dawn Report
April 22, 2025
ISLAMABAD: The gulf between reluctant allies — the PTI and JUI-F — has widened to the point that leaders from Imran Khan’s party seem to have lost hope of launching a much-touted joint struggle alongside the religio-political outfit led by Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
This was evidenced by Opposition Leader Omar Ayub’s recent admission that they would forge ahead with their agitation, as they could not force the Maulana to join their ‘grand alliance’.
“We will take our caravan and move forward. Whoever comes in the caravan is fine, we will not force Maulana Sahib to support us,” he said during an appearance on DawnNewsTV on Monday.
He said the Maulana had his own political party, and if he did not want to join hands with the PTI, then it was his decision to make.
The PTI had earlier been quite confident that it would be able to win over the veteran politician from Dera Ismail Khan with help from their allies in the Tehreek Tahaffuz Aayen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) alliance.
However, the recent brouhaha over whether the incarcerated PTI founder was willing to cut a deal with the establishment for his release seems to have driven a wedge between the two parties.
Recently, PTI leader Azam Swati — whose previous allegiances include the JUI-F — claimed he had Imran Khan’s blessing to approach the establishment for talks. However, while this impression was refuted by other party leaders such as Salman Akram Raja and Omar Ayub, the JUI-F took exception and sought clarity from the PTI.
For his part, the Maulana’s recent remarks have indicated a cooling of tensions with PTI. During his press talk alongside the Jamaat-i-Islami chief in Mansoora on Monday, he expressed a willingness to “mend relations with the PTI to an extent where political dialogue is possible and national issues discussed”.
The veteran politician said that while they also had political differences with the PPP and PML-N, this should not be construed as a personal enmity.
“In the same spirit, we also want our relations with the PTI to be cordial enough to carry on political dialogue,” the Maulana said.
But according to JUI-F Senator Kamran Murtaza, the party wants a definitive answer on whether the PTI seeks to launch an anti-government drive, or cosy up with the powers that be. In an earlier appearance on DawnNewsTV, Senator Murtaza had indicated that the JUI-F chief was ready to disengage with the PTI over this.
“The JUI-F might not join the opposition alliance if the PTI has decided to engage with the establishment,” he had said.
“If an alliance between the two parties is formed, then all decisions will need to be taken in light of party discipline,” Senator Murtaza claimed, adding that decisions would be taken through consensus in such a case.
On Monday, Mr Ayub again denied the impression that his party was pursing the establishment, saying that no dialogue was taking place, nor were any attempts being made to initiate such talks.
However, he maintained that all parties that were part of the TTAP alliance — led by PkMAP chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai — would be taken on board in case such a move was on the cards.
Mr Ayub refused to answer when asked, point blank, whom these talks would be held with.

Syed Irfan Raza
April 22, 2025
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Monday the government will provide facilities to overseas Pakistanis for investment in the country according to their expertise.
He said the government was striving to resolve the issues of overseas Pakistanis on a priority basis and working to provide them more facilities. He said the overseas Pakistanis would be given opportunities of investment in the country, a press release of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) quoted the prime minister as saying.
The PM was presiding over a special meeting on matters related to overseas Pakistanis.
Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen Syed Asim Munir also attended the meeting.
The meeting reviewed the decisions taken in a recent overseas Pakistanis’ convention held this month, a source in the PMO told Dawn.
The incentives include revival of the Green Channel, setting up of special courts, tax remissions, education and job quotas, civil awards, and skill development opportunities, etc.
Overseas Pakistanis had played the role of ambassadors of Pakistan in the outside world, the prime minister said, adding that they have rendered great services for the country.
“We salute the true sentiments of overseas Pakistanis and their love and sacrifices for their country,” he said, adding the overseas Pakistanis had made a name for themselves and their country by working diligently all across the world.
The prime minister said that expatriates worked day and night as professionals in the fields of medicine, education, engineering, and consultancy.
The prime minister said that those overseas Pakistanis who performed prominently in different fields and those who sent highest remittances through the State Bank would be given civil awards in view of their services to the country.
Turkiye visit
PM Shehbaz Sharif is leaving today (Tuesday) on a two-day official visit to Turkiye.
According to the Foreign Office, the prime minister will hold extensive discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on bilateral relations, besides exchanging views on recent developments in the region and beyond.
The FO said that as long-standing allies and strategic partners, Pakistan and Turkiye maintained a tradition of regular high-level exchanges, reflecting the exceptional bonds of brotherhood between the two nations.
The two countries have also institutionalised leadership-level mechanism in the form of High Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC) for cooperation and coordination on various issues of mutual interest.

‘Held ex-PAF officer was convicted of mutiny’
Malik Asad
April 22, 2025
ISLAMABAD: A retired air marshal, who was arrested last year, has been convicted on a number of charges, including mutiny, and is being detained at a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) mess, a PAF representative informed the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday.
Retired Air Marshal Javad Saeed was arrested in January 2024, after which his spouse filed a habeas corpus petition for his recovery.
At the time, IHC Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro dismissed the petition and imposed a fine of Rs25,000 on the petitioner as PAF authorities disclosed that Saeed was court-martialled and convicted under the Official Secrets Act.
The judge remarked that since Saeed’s whereabouts were already known, a habeas corpus petition could not be filed for his recovery.
Then, last month, Saeed’s spouse filed a review application against the dismissal and sought his release from PAF’s custody.
The petition stated that after the arrest, Saeed’s pension was stopped, and the government-provided family health services were also discontinued. But later, his wife’s medical treatment was restored.
The hearing
During the hearing of the review application on Monday, a PAF official told the court that Saeed was detained under the Official Secrets Act.
After a court-martial by a PAF tribunal, he was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment. The air chief has reduced the sentence by 10 years and Saeed was serving the remaining four-year term.
The PAF official informed IHC that Saeed was detained at an Officers’ Mess instead of a prison, where army officers serve their sentences after conviction as per law.
The petitioner’s counsel, retired Col Inamur Rahim, argued that Saeed was being kept in illegal custody by PAF. He said that as a constitutional court, the IHC was duty-bound to set aside the “unlawful confinement”.
He pointed out that following the conviction, convicts were sent to jail to complete the sentence. However, the PAF kept Saeed in its own custody.
Advocate Rahim said that Saeed was among the contenders for the post of air chief in 2021, but retired from service on March 18, 2021, after he was not promoted as air chief. The officer was taken into custody on January 1, 2024, the lawyer added.
Being a civilian, he could not be tried by the PAF Tribunal, he argued, adding that despite his conviction, Saeed was not handed over to jail authorities.
The PAF official informed the judge that the air chief had declared the Officer’s Mess as sub-jail. Therefore, Saeed was detained there in accordance with the law.
Mr Rahim contested the assertion, saying such confinement was illegal.
He also said that authorities did not share details of the court-martial proceedings, leaving the convict unable to file an appeal in court.
The judge then directed PAF to share relevant details with the counsel and adjourned the hearing till April 29.

Punjab Assembly echoes with issue of consistent ministerial absence
Amjad Mahmood | Mansoor Malik
April 22, 2025
LAHORE: Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan on Monday admitted the consistent absence of ministers during the assembly proceedings.
“Apart from one minister, other cabinet members are not present in the assembly,” the speaker stated on Monday, adding that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz must be informed about the recurring issue of her cabinet members’ absence.
Earlier, ruling party MPA Saeed Akbar Niwani pointed out that not a single member from the entire cabinet was present in the House.
Speaker Khan remarked these ministers were not even engaged in other pressing matters, used as an excuse for their absence.
He issued a ruling, emphasising the need to ensure the presence of ministers in the assembly.
Addressing the speaker, Mr Niwani told the speaker that he was sharing the government’s burden.
In a united voice, both the treasury and opposition members jointly demanded that the speaker refrain from taking on the government’s responsibilities.
On the other hand, embarrassed at its failure to maintain quorum in the Punjab Assembly to pass a ‘favourite’ bill, the PML-N government has instructed the deputy commissioners (DCs) across the province to ensure the presence of treasury MPAs in the assembly session on Tuesday (today).
As the Punjab Assembly was on its way to pass the Nawaz Sharif Cancer Hospital Bill, an opposition member pointed out the quorum and the panel of chairman Malik Arshad was compelled to adjourn the session for Tuesday (today).
It is learnt that there were 26 members in the House, including eight members from the opposition benches. Seven opposition members left the House and an opposition member then pointed out the quorum leaving no space for the panel of chairman to maintain the quorum.
Soon after treasury’s failure to maintain the quorum, the DCs were instructed to call and message the treasury MPAs to ensure their presence in Lahore for the passage of Nawaz Sharif Cancer Hospital Bill.
A DC’s message sent to the treasury MPAs is titled as: “Presence of MPAs from Treasury Benches in Lahore for passage of the Nawaz Sharif Cancer Hospital Bill.”
The text says, “I am directed to convey that the Treasury Benches MPAs must be present in Lahore tomorrow (Tuesday), i.e., April 22, 2025, as the Nawaz Sharif Cancer Hospital Bill is scheduled to be processed in the Provincial Assembly”.
The message concludes as saying “You are requested to ensure your timely presence” and “Kindly acknowledge the message”.
During the assembly session, treasury MPA Zulfiqar Shah expressed condolences on the passing of Pope Francis.
He stated, “We express our sorrows to the Catholic Christian community of Pakistan.”
He described Pope Francis as a great personality who played a role for interfaith harmony. MPA Ijaz Alam Augustine requested a special prayer in the House.
Speaker Khan led the House in observing one minute silence in remembrance of Pope Francis.
The House passed six bills amid low presence of lawmakers. These included The Walled City of Lahore (Amendment) Bill 2025, The Punjab Financial Advisory Services Bill 2025, The Punjab Finance (Amendment) Bill 2025, The Punjab Spatial Planning Authority Bill 2025, and The Punjab Energy Efficiency and Conservation Agency Bill 2025.

Centre vows to address all of Sindh’s reservations on contentious canals project
April 21, 2025
In a bid to smooth out differences, Adviser to Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah on Monday assured Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon of addressing Sindh's concerns regarding the contentious canals project.
The assurance came during a second telephonic conversation, wherein both leaders agreed to continue consultations and move forward on resolving the matter amicably.
The Centre extended the offer of dialogue two days after PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari warned that his party would part ways with the ruling coalition led by the PML-N, if the federal government failed to address its reservations over the controversial canals project.
The controversial canals project has become a bone of contention between the two major political parties, which are allies in the Centre.
The issue concerns the federal government’s plan to divert water from the Indus River by constructing six canals to irrigate the Cholistan desert — a project opposed by its key ally, the PPP, and several nationalist parties in the province.
According to government sources, the estimated cost of the Cholistan canal system is Rs211.4 billion, and through the project, thousands of acres of barren land can be used for agricultural purposes, and 400,000 acres of land can be brought under cultivation.
Almost all political and religious parties, nationalist groups and civil society organisations staged widespread rallies across Sindh against the controversial plan.
During today's call, Sanaullah said that all issues would be addressed through mutual understanding and dialogue.
He reiterated that under the Water Apportionment Accord, no province's water can be transferred to another province. "The issue of water distribution is administrative and technical in nature and will be resolved on the same grounds," he said.
The adviser assured that no province would be deprived of its rightful share and that all reservations would be addressed through an expanded consultative process.
In their first telephonic contact on April 20, Memon conveyed Sindh’s strong reservations regarding the controversial canals, stressing that the PPP and people of Sindh demand fair water distribution under the 1991 Water Accord.
He reiterated the province’s willingness to engage in talks with the federal government.
Sanaullah, on his part, emphasised dialogue over politics, calling for the matter to be resolved through consultation. He assured that the federal government respects the PPP's role in the federation and that no province's water can be diverted to another.
'PM should announce cancellation of project'
Separately, Memon — while speaking on Geo News programme 'Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath' — asked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to officially announce the cancellation of the six canals project, stating that it would help dispel public concerns.
He noted that once the apprehensions are addressed, the people will stop agitating, and the ongoing protests will end.
Memon stressed that if there is no new water source, any new canal would inevitably divert water already allocated to existing users. “They [the government] must clarify from where in Punjab water will be diverted for these canals,” he added.
He further said that Sindh is already receiving less water than its rightful share and questioned how new canals could be constructed under these circumstances. “If Sindh is not being given its due share, admit there is a water shortage,” he added.
He also noted that Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had written several letters to the federal government, urging it to convene a meeting of the Council of Common Interests (CCI) to address the issue.
Meanwhile, Sanaullah said that cancelling the project might give a misleading impression that wrongdoing had occurred. “It would appear as if we were trying to hide something and were forced to withdraw under pressure,” he said.
He rejected any perception that the federal government intended to deprive Sindh of its water share. “There can never be any such plan to turn Sindh barren,” he said.
Sanaullah also clarified that the meeting in which the alleged approval was given was merely a consultative session. “It was not a formal approval by the President,” he added.
He reiterated that progress on the canal project is expected once the prime minister returns from Turkiye.

Earth Day in AlUla to connect nature, community at Arch Rock
NADA HAMEED
April 21, 2025
JEDDAH: In the heart of AlUla, a Saudi community platform, Motnfs, is hosting an Earth Day event on April 22 at the iconic Rainbow Rock, also known as Arch Rock.
The 2025 theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlights the vital role of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind in creating a cleaner, greener future.
The experience in AlUla is designed to deepen connections with nature, foster social bonds, and promote environmental awareness in a fun and engaging setting.
Bilal Fahad, founder and experience designer at Motnfs, said: “We decided to align the initiative with the Earth Day 2025 theme through an experience that practically incentivizes teamwork despite the diversity of the participants in a way that raises environmental awareness, creating an environment that encourages the adoption of sustainable eco-friendly habits that reflect our common strength to protect the planet and reflect on this year’s Earth Day theme.”
Rainbow Rock earns its name from its distinctive shape. It resembles an arch or rainbow flanked by two cloud-like formations. The site’s surreal beauty, paired with AlUla’s minimal light pollution, makes it a prime destination for camping and stargazing under crystal-clear skies.
“Arch Rock was chosen because it’s a significant landmark in AlUla, and its setting perfectly aligns with the Earth Day theme and the nature of the experience,” Fahad added.
Earth Day, marked globally on April 22 since 1970, unites more than 1 billion people across 193 countries to advance environmental protection. Initiatives like tree planting and sustainability workshops highlight collective efforts to combat climate change, preserve biodiversity and reduce waste.
The core of the Earth Day event in AlUla is a community clean-up designed to raise awareness about environmental care and promote a shared sense of responsibility for preserving natural spaces.
“Success is measured by the area cleaned and the level of participant engagement during the activity,” said Salman Al-Kanani, co-founder and social media manager at Motnfs.
Motnfs encourages environmental consciousness not only during Earth Day, but also throughout its activities.
“We design experiences in an innovative way that instills a sense of environmental responsibility in participants. This is what characterizes our experiences — redefining people’s connection with nature and bringing themselves away from the pressures of modern life,” said Batool Al-Humaidi, co-founder and public relations lead.
The Earth Day event includes a treasure hunt, blending fun with environmental education.
“The experience is centered around a treasure hunt, where the real treasure is the earth we live on and the participants themselves — highlighting that with the right practices, they are true treasures of our treasure earth,” added Al-Humaidi.
Another key moment of the day will be stargazing, which Fahad believes is a powerful way to connect with the environment.
“The astronomy guide leads participants through a journey of the night sky, sharing stories and facts that spark awe and awareness. By looking up, we’re reminded of our place in the universe and the importance of protecting our planet, tying back to Earth Day’s message of care and responsibility,” Fahad said.
Motnfs operates in Riyadh, Jeddah and AlUla, with plans to expand to more destinations within and beyond the Kingdom.

Farasan Islands celebrate annual harid fish arrival
April 21, 2025
RIYADH: The shores of the Farasan Islands are witnessing the annual arrival of large schools of harid fish, which travel for months from the Indian Ocean, through the Arabian Sea, and into the Red Sea.
The harid fish, or parrotfish, is a diverse species inhabiting coral reefs and plays a key role in the marine ecosystem.
Recognizable by its parrot-like beak and vibrant colors, the harid thrives in coral-rich habitats, with over 90 species, each having unique shapes and colors.
Farasan, a group of coral islands 40 km off Jazan’s coast, becomes the site of this natural event as vast schools of harid fish gather, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
Residents can predict the fish’s arrival by a distinct scent carried from the sea after sunset on the 15th day of the lunar month.
The annual harid catch, celebrated in late April, is a tradition reflecting the islands’ cultural heritage and has brought joy to Farasan for centuries.
Recognizing the cultural and tourism significance of harid fishing, Jazan Gov. Prince Mohammed bin Nasser inaugurated the first Farasan Islands Harid Festival in 2005.
The 21st edition of the festival launched on Monday, showcasing the islands as a promising destination for tourists and investors.
The festival highlights Farasan’s unique customs, traditions, folk games, handicrafts, and historical sites, while also showcasing local handicrafts such as fishing traps, palm weaving, bag and rug creation, and hat knitting.

Canada election: Muslim voters demand ‘real commitments’ on Islamophobia
21.04.2025
As the country’s federal election enters its final stretch, Muslim Canadians are making it clear that they want the next government to do more than merely acknowledge Islamophobia, calling for decisive action to combat it.
The grim statistics underscore the dangers Muslims face in Canada, a country that, as of 2024, held the unfortunate distinction of experiencing the highest number of targeted killings of Muslims among G7 nations.
Among these incidents was the killing of six Muslims at a Quebec mosque in 2017, and the deliberate murder of four members of a Muslim family, run down by a truck in London, Ontario, in 2021.
Despite these harrowing events, the critical issue of Islamophobia has struggled to find substantial space in the political discourse leading up to the April 28 elections.
US President Donald Trump’s erratic policies – ranging from harsh reciprocal tariffs to threats of annexing Canada – have largely sucked up all the oxygen in the room, leaving little room for discussions around combating hate crimes and protecting minority rights.
However, Muslim advocacy groups remain determined to keep Islamophobia on the agenda.
According to Reem Sheet, an official of the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), which has approximately 200,000 supporters among Canada’s 1.8 million Muslims, the stakes have never been higher.
In an interview with Anadolu, she emphasized the urgency of concrete policy actions that Canadian Muslims expect from political leaders.
“Canadian Muslims are looking for real commitments on issues like a national strategy to combat Islamophobia, concrete action on hate crimes, and a clear stance on global human rights, especially when it comes to Gaza,” said Sheet.
She pointed to the disturbing developments south of the border, where Trump’s administration has openly targeted pro-Palestinian activists with deportations and entry bans. Many Canadian Muslims view these developments with anxiety, concerned that similar actions could gain traction domestically if not decisively countered.
“We are seeing what’s happening with the Trump administration across the border with horror … That means we must fight hard to make sure those ideas don’t take root here, whether we’re talking about Muslim bans, the annexation of Gaza, or other dangerous attacks on civil liberties,” said Sheet.
Challenges to free speech and rising Islamophobia
The threats to civil liberties and freedom of speech are not limited to the US, as Canadian institutions have recently shown troubling signs of intolerance towards pro-Palestinian voices.
For instance, the Advocates’ Society – a prominent Canadian legal group – recently canceled an invitation extended to Tareq Hadhad, a Syrian refugee known for his advocacy for peace, after he posted on X calling for an end to Israel’s deadly war on Gaza.
Though the society faced internal criticism and eventually apologized to Hadhad, the damage was done: the event scheduled for June was inexplicably canceled with no reason given.
While Canada has made some strides, such as the creation of the Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia with the appointment of Amira Elghawaby in 2023, much work remains to be done.
“Unfortunately, Islamophobia continues to rise across Canada. Hate crimes against Muslims are still happening, and our legal and education teams are overworked,” said Sheet, communications and public affairs senior principal at NCCM.
“We’ve seen some important progress, but more needs to be done. We need education that doesn’t just talk about Islamophobia, but combats it.”
Sheet refrained from endorsing any particular party, instead stressing the need for clear and committed action from all leaders.
“We continue to engage with all candidates and we’re calling on all leaders to commit to protecting human rights, combatting Islamophobia, and standing against hate in all its forms,” she said.
Call for ‘principled stance’ on Gaza
Canada’s position on Israel’s war on Gaza is also a critical concern, with Sheet emphasizing that Canadian Muslims are closely watching the responses of political leaders and expect more than just sympathetic statements.
“While some leaders have made stronger statements than others, what we need right now is more than words. We need consistent action on the issues that matter most to Canadians,” she said.
“We’re urging all leaders to take a principled stance on Gaza and hope that Canada will play a constructive role in ending (the war).”
For Muslims, Canada’s next government has to “take a clear and principled stance,” she emphasized.
“That means advocating for the immediate protection of civilians, ensuring unrestricted access to humanitarian aid, and standing up for international law. Canada has a responsibility to lead with integrity, and that includes pushing for a ceasefire, an end to the blockade, and accountability for human rights violations,” she said.
Sheet also addressed the role of Canadian media in shaping public perceptions and attitudes toward Palestinians, Arabs, and Muslims in general, emphasizing the media’s power to influence societal views.
“Representation matters, and too often, Muslims in media are reduced to harmful stereotypes,” she said.
“This further reinforces dangerous perceptions that spiral into real-world discrimination and violence. Our legal team and our education team have seen this too many times and are overworked in their efforts to combat this reality for Muslim families.”

CAIR Extols Pope Francis’ Legacy of Opposition to War Crimes, Compassion for Poor
April 21, 2025
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today offered its condolences to the Catholic community and Christians around the world on the passing of Pope Francis and commended his legacy of compassion for the poor and opposition to war crimes, including the Israeli government’s bombing in Gaza, which he again condemned the day before his passing.
In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:
“To God we belong, and to God we return. We extend our condolences to the Catholic community and Christians around the world on the passing of Pope Francis. The American Muslim community and many Muslims around the world appreciated Pope Francis’ emphasis on the compassionate treatment of migrants and others facing crisis, his efforts to uphold the traditional values of his faith while maintaining a respectful tone, and his consistent condemnation of war crimes around the world, including in Gaza.
“The political leaders around the world who are mourning Pope Francis today should heed his calls for them to end any injustices their governments support, starting with the Trump administration and its support for the Israeli government’s genocide in Gaza.”
Earlier this year, CAIR commended Pope Francis for denouncing the Israeli government’s war crimes in Gaza after he released a speech calling the humanitarian crisis in Gaza created by Israel “very serious and shameful.”
CAIR previously welcomed a statement by Pope Francis condemning the “cruelty” of Israel’s genocide in Gaza and a call by the Pope for an investigation to determine whether Israel has committed “genocide” in Gaza.

US senator says new 9/11 investigation could happen
22 Apr, 2025
Republican US Senator Ron Johnson has suggested that new congressional hearings into the September 11 attacks may be forthcoming, citing unanswered questions surrounding the official narrative and the handling of evidence.
On September 11, 2001, al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four passenger airliners, crashing two into the World Trade Center towers in Manhattan. A third plane struck the Pentagon, while the fourth crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), World Trade Center Building 7 collapsed due to fires ignited by debris from one of the nearby towers.
During an interview with conservative commentator Benny Johnson which was published on Monday, Senator Johnson questioned several aspects of the 9/11 investigation, including the collapse of Building 7.
“I don’t know that you can find structural engineers – other than the ones that have the corrupt investigation inside NIST – that would say that that thing didn’t come down in any other way than a controlled demolition,” he said.
Johnson, who chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, also criticized the removal and destruction of physical evidence from the site, calling it “totally contrary to any other firefighting investigation procedures.”
“Where’s all the documentation from the NIST investigation? There are a host of questions that I want and I will be asking, quite honestly, now that my eyes have been opened,” he added.
When asked whether the public might see hearings on the issue, Johnson replied, “I think so.” He further suggested that President Donald Trump, “being a New Yorker himself,” might have an interest in reopening the case: “What actually happened in 9/11? What do we know? What is being covered up? My guess is there’s an awful lot being covered up in terms of what the American government knows about 9/11.”
Johnson also said he recently spoke with former Congressman Curt Weldon and plans to “work with him to expose what he’s willing to expose.”
Earlier this month, Weldon urged Trump to appoint “people of impeccable integrity” to lead a commission to “study the facts” surrounding 9/11.
In an interview with journalist Tucker Carlson, Weldon dismissed the label of conspiracy theorist, suggesting that the CIA and the government have long engaged in disinformation. “You know, what gets me is reporters who call people conspiracy theorists. Well, that’s all the agency does! They’re the ones who create the conspiracies,” he said. “They have whole courses for their agents on how to make people look like they’re conspiracy theorists.”
The 9/11 Commission Report, released in 2004, remains the most comprehensive US federal review of the attacks. However, critics have pointed to omissions and the continued classification of key government documents. Johnson also referenced a bipartisan effort with Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) in 2023 to obtain unredacted FBI files. “We wanted to get those answers, those documents for the families. Again, we didn’t get squat from the FBI,” he said.

Harvard University sues Trump administration to stop funding freeze
April 22, 2025
Kwasi Gyamfi Asiedu
Harvard University filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration to stop billions of dollars in proposed cuts.
The suit filed Monday is part of a feud that escalated last week when the elite institution rejected a list of demands that the Trump administration said was designed to curb diversity initiatives and fight anti-semitism at the school.
President Donald Trump froze $2.2bn (£1.7bn) of federal funding and also threatened the university's tax-exempt status.
"The consequences of the government's overreach will be severe and long-lasting," Harvard's president Alan M. Garber said in a letter to the university on Monday.
The White House responded later Monday night in a statement.
"The gravy train of federal assistance to institutions like Harvard, which enrich their grossly overpaid bureaucrats with tax dollars from struggling American families is coming to an end. Taxpayer funds are a privilege, and Harvard fails to meet the basic conditions required to access that privilege", said White House spokesman Harrison Fields.
Mr Garber said the funding freeze affected critical research including studies on pediatric cancer, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
"In recent weeks, the federal Government has launched a broad attack on the critical funding partnerships that make this invaluable research possible," the school's lawsuit said.
"This case involves the Government's efforts to use the withholding of federal funding as leverage to gain control of academic decisionmaking at Harvard."
Aside from funding, the Trump administration days ago also threatened Harvard's ability to enroll international students.
Mr Garber, who is Jewish, acknowledged Harvard's campus has had issues with anti-semitism but said he had established task forces to work with the problem. He said the university would release the report of two task forces that looked into anti-semitism and anti-Muslim bias.
The prominent US university, located in Massachusetts, is not the only institution faced with withholding of federal dollars, which play an outsized role in funding new scientific breakthroughs.
The administration has targeted other private Ivy League institutions including suspending $1bn at Cornell University and $510 million at Brown University.
Others such as Columbia University, the epicentre of pro-Palestinian campus protests last year, have agreed to some demands after $400 million of federal funds was threatened.
The demands to Harvard included agreeing to government-approved external audits of the university's curriculum as well as hiring and admission data. In response, Harvard released a blistering letter rejecting them.
"The university will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights," Harvard's lawyers told the administration on April 14.
"Neither Harvard nor any other private university can allow itself to be taken over by the federal government. Accordingly, Harvard will not accept the government's terms as an agreement in principle."
Former US President Barack Obama, a Harvard alum, said he supported the university.

Ex-US senator's wife convicted in gold bars bribery scheme
April 22, 2025
A New York jury has found the wife of a former New Jersey senator guilty for her role in a years-long bribery scheme that included stacks of cash, gold bars and a Mercedes-Benz.
Nadine Menendez, 58, was found guilty on all 15 counts, including bribery and obstruction of justice, for aiding her husband, ex-Sen Robert Menendez, who received lavish gifts in exchange for political favours.
She was indicted with her husband in September 2023 but had her trial delayed for breast cancer treatments.
A sentencing date for Menendez has been set for 12 June. Her husband was convicted in July 2024 and sentenced to 11 years in prison.
In a statement, the US attorney's office for the Southern District of New York said the couple were "partners in crime" who participated in "corrupt official acts".
"Today's verdict sends the clear message that the power of government officials may not be put up for sale," the statement said.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Menendez was an indispensable part of her husband's bribery scheme, telling the jury it was she who often accepted the cash and other gifts on behalf of the former senator.
Her husband, at the time, was the top-ranking Democrat on the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee for more than five years, a position that gave him significant influence over US foreign policy.
"She was keeping him in the loop every step of the way," Paul M Monteleoni, a prosecutor, said in a closing argument, the New York Times reported.
Menendez's lawyers said the government failed to prove a link between the gold and stacks of cash found in the couple's home to any "official act" taken by her husband.
Her lawyer Barry Coburn said he was "devastated by the verdict", standing outside the New York courthouse on Monday afternoon.
"We fought hard and it hurts," Mr Coburn said. "This is a very rough day for us."
Menendez and her husband were convicted of participating in a wide-ranging scheme to secretly aid the Egyptian government using the former senator's perch in Washington, prosecutors had said.
The government backed up its claims with evidence from a 2022 FBI search at the couple's New Jersey home that included over $100,000 (£80,000) worth of gold bars and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash in envelopes or hidden in clothes.
They also showed digital evidence that included text messages between the couple and their associates, and a Google search by the former senator that said: "How much is one kilo of gold worth?"
Fred Daibes, a New Jersey property developer, and Wael Hana, the Egyptian-born operator of a halal certification company, were also charged and convicted for their roles.
Insurance broker Jose Uribe pleaded guilty in March 2024 to charges related to the corrupt scheme.

Trump backs defence secretary after reports of second Signal chat leak
April 22, 2025
President Donald Trump has backed US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth after reports that military attack details were shared in a group chat that included Hegseth's wife, brother, and personal lawyer.
The controversy comes a month after a journalist was added to a Signal group chat in which US cabinet officials, including Hegseth, discussed plans to attack Houthi rebels in Yemen.
In the second Signal chat, Hegseth shared information about air strikes against Yemen, the BBC's US news partner CBS confirmed, citing sources familiar with the messages.
"Pete's doing a great job," Trump told reporters on Monday. "Everybody's happy with him."
White House officials have played down reports of military plans being shared in a second Signal group chat, but have not denied it.
Trump told reporters he has "great confidence" in his defence secretary.
"Are you bringing up Signal again? I thought they gave that up two weeks ago. It's the same old stuff from the media," he said. "Try finding something new," he said.
Trump said the source of the story "sounds like disgruntled employees", an idea also floated by Hegseth earlier on Monday when he claimed the news media was "full of hoaxsters" who "try to slash and burn people".
Hegseth did not directly respond to reports of a second Signal chat, which were initially covered by the New York Times.
In a statement to the newspaper, the White House said no classified information was shared.
The messages in the second chat, sent on 15 March, included flight schedules for American F/A-18 Hornets carrying out strikes on Houthi targets.
Hegseth's wife, Jennifer Rauchet, is a former Fox News producer and holds no official position within the Pentagon. Hegseth has previously been criticised for reportedly including his wife in meetings with foreign leaders.
His brother, Phil, and personal lawyer, Tim Parlatore, both hold positions at the Department of Defense. But it is not clear why any of the three would require advanced warnings of sensitive US strike plans.
Unlike the first Signal group, the second one - called "Defense | Team Huddle" - was created by Hegseth, according to the New York Times. But it too appeared to share details of military operations against Yemen.
The existence of the earlier Signal group was revealed by Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor of the Atlantic magazine, who was accidentally included in it by Mike Waltz, Trump's national security adviser.
Although the White House has also denied that classified information was discussed in the first group, Hegseth's critics - including former US defence officials - have said such discussions could jeopardise US military personnel.
Signal uses end-to-end encryption, meaning only a message's sender and recipients can view its contents. Despite this high level of security, experts say there are still ways for the information to be viewed or shared with the wrong people, which is why classified communications normally take place in secure, government-controlled locations rather than on private devices.
The second Signal chat surfaced as controversy swirls around the head of the Pentagon, who this year is controlling a budget of $892bn (£670bn).
Hegseth last week fired three top officials for an "unauthorised disclosure" - an accusation the officials said was "baseless".
In a testy exchange outside the White House ahead of an annual Easter event, Hegseth appeared to attribute the latest story to the officials he fired.
"What a big surprise that a few leakers get fired and suddenly a bunch of hit pieces come out," he said.
Hegseth criticised the media and denounced the reports. He also said he has spoken to the president and that they were "on the same page all the way".
In an op-ed for Politico magazine published on Sunday, John Ullyot, the top Pentagon spokesperson who resigned last week, wrote that the department was in "total chaos".
He added: "The dysfunction is now a major distraction for the president - who deserves better from his senior leadership."
Ullyot said it was not true that the three fired officials were leaking information and wrote: "Unfortunately, Hegseth's team has developed a habit of spreading flat-out, easily debunked falsehoods anonymously about their colleagues on their way out the door."
However, in a statement on X, Sean Parnell, current chief spokesman for the Pentagon, said the "Trump-hating media" was "destroying anyone committed to President Trump's agenda".
He echoed the White House by saying that "there was no classified information in any Signal chat".
Washington says its strikes in Yemen are punishment for Houthi attacks on cargo vessels transiting through the Red Sea, a critical waterway for international trade.
Since November 2023, the Houthis have targeted dozens of merchant vessels with missiles, drones and small boat attacks in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, saying they are acting in support of the Palestinians in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza . They have sunk two vessels, seized a third, and killed four crew members.
US air strikes on an oil terminal in north-western Yemen this week killed at least 74 people and wounded 171 others, according to the Houthi-run health ministry.

Grand Mufti of Palestine condemns incitement & threats to demolish Al-Aqsa Mosque
21 Apr 2025
The Grand Mufti of Al-Quds and the Palestinian Diaspora, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, condemned the blatant incitement against Al-Aqsa, warning of the danger of a video clip produced with artificial intelligence technology, showing a shocking scene of blowing up the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque and establishing the alleged "Temple" in its place, under the title: "Next year in Al-Quds".
In a statement on Monday, Sheikh Hussein expressed his condemnation of this incitement, which is led by settlement associations and extremist extremists, and is published in the current situation in conjunction with the escalation of incursions and allowing extremists to engage in provocative practices under the protection of the enemy police.
He held the enemy authorities responsible for the consequences of this aggression, which provokes the feelings of Muslims all over the world, and warned of its dangerous repercussions.
Hussein called on the world's free people and decision-makers to put an immediate end to what is happening in Al-Aqsa, to take all possible measures and means to prevent it from being harmed.

Kuwait condemns Zionist provocative, racist remarks
April 21, 2025
KUWAIT: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday voiced Kuwait’s strong condemnation and denunciation of the racist and provocative calls made by extremist settler groups affiliated with the Zionist occupation, which incite the demolition of Al-Aqsa Mosque to build the so-called temple in its place. In a statement, the ministry described such calls as a blatant violation of Islamic sanctities and a deep affront to the sentiments of Muslims around the world. It warned of the grave implications of these statements, particularly as they coincide with a surge in incursions and violations at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, carried out under the protection of occupation forces.
The ministry stressed that these developments signal a dangerous and unprecedented escalation in the occupied Palestinian territories, alongside the continued aggression on the Gaza Strip. Reaffirming Kuwait’s categorical rejection of unilateral Zionist actions, the ministry underscored the need to preserve the legal and historical status of Jerusalem and its holy sites.
It called for immediate international intervention to halt these violations and to safeguard Islamic sanctities in accordance with international legitimacy and relevant UN resolutions. The statement reiterated Kuwait’s unwavering stance on the Palestinian cause and its steadfast support for the rights of the Palestinian people and their legitimate struggle to establish an independent state within the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
In another development, Gaza’s civil defense agency reported that Zionist airstrikes since dawn on Sunday have killed at least 25 people across the Gaza Strip, including women and children. Zionist entity resumed its aerial and ground assault on Gaza on March 18, reigniting fighting after a two-month ceasefire that had paused more than 15 months of war in the coastal territory. “Since dawn today, the occupation’s air strikes have killed 20 people and injured dozens more, including children and women across the Gaza Strip,” Mahmud Bassal, spokesman for the civil defense agency told AFP.
In a separate statement later, the agency reported that five people were killed in a Zionist drone strike on a group of civilians in eastern Rafah. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday vowed to continue the war and bring home the remaining hostages held in Gaza without yielding to Hamas’s demands. — Agencies
“We are at a critical stage of the campaign, and at this point, we need patience and determination to win,” Netanyahu said in a statement, rejecting calls from the militants to end the war and withdraw troops from Gaza. - Agencies

Iran has unconditional sovereignty over trio PG islands
Apr 22, 2025
Following the registration of the statement of the 163rd meeting of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council foreign ministers, Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Amir-Sa'eed Iravani, in a letter addressed to the President of the Security Council, rejected the claim of interference in the sovereignty of the Iranian islands of Abu Musa, the Greater Tunb, and the Lesser Tunb in the Persian Gulf, calling it a clear violation of the principles of international law and the UN Charter.
The full text of Iravan's letter is as follows:
In the name of God, the most Compassionate, the most Merciful
No. 2459747
21 April 2025
Excellency,
Upon instructions from my Government, I am writing with reference to the letter dated 17 March 2025 from the Permanent Representative of Kuwait to the United Nations, addressed to the President of the Security Council, which transmitted the final statement of the 163rd Session of the Ministerial Council of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States (S/2025/169). In this regard, I would like to inform you of the following:
- Paragraphs 41 to 45 of the abovementioned statement include assertions on three Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf that constitute a clear and unacceptable interference in the internal affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in flagrant violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations. These baseless claims are firmly rejected, and the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns and denounces them in their entirety. In this regard, the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran reaffirms its full and unquestionable sovereignty over the Iranian islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb in the Persian Gulf. Any claim to the contrary is considered an unacceptable interference in Iran’s internal affairs and a violation of the universally recognized principle of non-interference, as enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
- Regarding the reference in paragraph 44 of the statement of a falsified name for the Persian Gulf, I must emphasize that “Persian Gulf” is the only historically and legally recognized name for the body of water between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. This designation has been consistently used throughout recorded history and must be respected in accordance with international norms and historical accuracy.
- With regard to the unwarranted reference to Iran in paragraph 62 of the statement, it must be emphasized that Iran's foreign policy is based on respecting the principles of international law, particularly those governing friendly relations and cooperation among States, including the principle of sovereign equality. In this context, the Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently pursued a policy of friendship and good neighborliness with all its Persian Gulf neighbors. This principled policy is rooted in full respect for the political independence and sovereign equality of States, mutual respect, constructive cooperation, and dialogue. Iran remains firmly committed to the preservation of regional peace and security through the active and inclusive engagement of all countries in the Persian Gulf region, and will continue to uphold this approach in good faith.
- The references made to Iran’s nuclear program and defensive capabilities, including its missile program, in paragraphs 63 to 65 of the statement are unfounded and irrelevant. Iran remains fully committed to its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), and its nuclear activities are strictly for peaceful purposes, in line with its inalienable rights under the Treaty.
I should be grateful if you would have the present letter circulated as a document of the Security Council.
Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.

Iran rejects US, Israel claims about Tehran's role in Syria
Apr 22, 2025
The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations Amir Sa'eed Iravani, in a letter addressed to the President of the UN Security Council, categorically rejected the false accusations made by the representatives of the United States and the Israeli regime at the emergency meeting of the Security Council on April 9, 2025 (9896th meeting) regarding Syria.
Iravani said that the Islamic Republic of Iran has never pursued a policy of destabilization in Syria and has always supported the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of this country.
I am writing to respond to yet another unfounded accusation made by the representatives of the United States and the Israeli regime against the Islamic Republic of Iran during the United Nations Security Council emergency meeting on Syria on 9 April 2025 (9896th meeting), which focused on the continued acts of aggression by the Israeli regime against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic. During the meeting, both the representative of the United States and the representative of the Israeli occupying regime once again leveled false and unsubstantiated claims, accusing Iran of destabilizing Syria. The Islamic Republic of Iran categorically rejects these baseless allegations.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has never pursued a policy of destabilization in Syria. Iran has consistently advocated for the preservation of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. On the contrary, it is the United States that, for years now, under the false pretext of counterterrorism, has violated Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and destabilized the country by enabling and equipping terrorist groups and backing the Israeli regime’s occupation, all in pursuit of its own geopolitical objectives. These well-documented actions cannot be whitewashed by resorting to disinformation, distorting the facts to misleading the international community, or accusing Iran.
The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns the Israeli regime’s ongoing violations of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, which are carried out with the full support of the United States. Israel’s continued occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights remains a grave breach of international law. As affirmed by Security Council Resolution 497, any imposition of Israeli jurisdiction or administration over the occupied Golan is “null and void and without international legal effect.” The persistence of this illegal occupation is a major impediment to stability and security in Syria and the broader region. The Islamic Republic of Iran calls on the Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations and to take urgent and decisive action to halt Israel’s violations. The Security Council must compel the Israeli regime to end its occupation and fully withdraw from all Syrian-occupied territories in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions.
I take this opportunity to respond to the letter dated 20 February 2025 from the representative of the Israeli regime to the United Nations, addressed to the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council (S/2025/107). The letter baselessly and unjustifiably references Iran, falsely alleging transferring weapons and funds to Hezbollah. The Islamic Republic of Iran, once more, categorically rejects this unfounded accusation, which is nothing more than a pretext to justify Israel’s persistent violations of UNSCR 1701 (2006) and its blatant disregard for the ceasefire arrangements with Lebanon.
I should be grateful if you would have the present letter circulated as a document of the Security Council.

Composer Karen Homayounfar named Islamic Revolution Artist of the Year
April 21, 2025
He received the award for his music album "Sayyed al-Ummah," created as a tribute to the martyr Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.
"I have received many awards, but this one is truly extraordinary," he stated after accepting his award from renowned filmmakers Ebrahim Hatamikia and Ahmadreza Darvish, as well as Hojatoleslam Mohammad Qomi, the director of the IIDO, and Mohammad-Mehdi Dadman, the director of the Art Bureau.
“Among all the nominees, many were more deserving than I, and I am grateful to the selection committee for choosing someone as small as me for this great honor," he mentioned.
"My love for the people and Iran runs deep, and now my work has become even more challenging,” he continued.
“We live in a geography of love, expectation, and hope. All our scholars and celebrities throughout history are figures any nation would dream of having. I hope the artists of our country, all highly talented, can swiftly open the cultural capitals of the world with their works in literature, music, cinema, and with the support of officials.”
“That would be our great victory when they recognize the culture of this ancient land, the heart of the Middle East," he concluded.
Speaking about Homayounfar, Hatamikia noted that the films he has created share a deep connection with music.
“Honestly, music is the wing of this flight. A master like Karen Homayounfar is a true maestro of flight. He has a grasp of all heights, and the evidence of this claim lies in the music of the films he has crafted,” he noted.
Homayounfar's music conveys a sense of mourning that evokes deep emotions, he added.
Born in 1978, Karen Homayounfar is an award-winning musician and composer, who has won the Crystal Simorgh for Best Film Score at the Fajr Film Festival four times and has received the Golden Statue for Best Music at the Iran Cinema Celebration five times. In 2022, he served as one of the judges on the third season of the television competition "Asr-e Jadid" (New Era).
Homayounfar was selected from five nominees for the Islamic Revolution Artist of the Year, which included Golestan Jafarjan for receiving commendation from the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, for her book "Autumn Has Arrived" and its 135 reprints; Mohammad Hamzehzadeh for creating the book series "Tales of Delestan and Golestan"; Mohammadreza Doost Mohammadi for his portraits of martyred commanders of the Resistance Front and his impactful contributions to resistance art; and Mohammad Rasouli for his timely poetry during the Al-Aqsa Storm and in crucial moments of the Resistance Front.
In another part of the ceremony, Kamal Sharaf, a cartoonist and caricaturist from Yemen, was recognized as the international figure of Resistance Art for creating nearly 500 works following the Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, highlighting his role in the epic artistic narrative in Yemen. The award was presented to Ibrahim Mohammad al-Deilami, the Yemeni ambassador to Tehran.
After receiving the award, al-Deilami expressed his gratitude to the festival organizers and sent greetings to the fighters of the Resistance Front who sacrifice their lives and remain immortal.
At this stage, where the struggle has reached its peak, it is incumbent upon all of us to surge against the forces of disbelief; undoubtedly, only the men of God can withstand the front of disbelief, he said.
“On behalf of Kamal Sharaf who, with his steadfastness and his pen, has received this award, I extend my gratitude. We all must stand firm on this front, retreating not even an inch, and everyone should come forward with whatever they have to contribute, just as artists fight with their pens."
The art week is organized by the Art Bureau of the Islamic Ideology Dissemination Organization every year to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of documentarian Morteza Avini.
Art exhibitions and workshops, and theatrical musical performances are organized during this week.
Avini was martyred by a landmine in 1993 during his last trip to the former Iran-Iraq war zone in southwestern Iran while making the documentary “A City in the Sky” about the fall of Khorramshahr and the liberation of the southwestern Iranian city during the Iran-Iraq war.
He became famous for “The Narration of Triumph” and was called “the master of martyred writers” by his colleagues and war veterans due to the fervent narrations he wrote for his documentaries.
Avini has been commemorated by various Iranian personalities and organizations on different occasions.

Meanwhile, Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi described his Pakistani counterpart’s visit to Kabul as a positive step toward resolving ongoing challenges. He welcomed the efforts to conduct the agreements made—especially the establishment of a centralized control center and helpline numbers to address the concerns of returning Afghan nationals.
It is worth noting that on April 18, a high-level Pakistani delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar paid an official visit to Kabul.
During the visit, the delegation held separate meetings with senior officials of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan to discuss a range of issues—particularly the challenges faced by Afghan refugees in Pakistan, their dignified return to Afghanistan, and the strengthening of political, economic, trade, and transit ties between the two countries.

Protesters block Lalmonirhat highway demanding justice for murdered schoolgirl
Apr 21, 2025
Students and locals blocked the Lalmonirhat–Burimari Highway and staged a protest march this afternoon, demanding justice for the murder of Jannati Akhter, a sixth-grade student from Kaliganj upazila.
The demonstrators called for the death penalty for the prime accused and the immediate arrest of the remaining suspects still at large.
They blocked the highway in the Bhotmari area of Kaliganj upazila from 4:00pm to 5:00pm, setting fire to tyres and throwing stones, which brought traffic to a standstill for nearly an hour.
Protesters chanted slogans demanding a fair trial and the highest punishment for those responsible.
The blockade caused severe traffic congestion on both sides of the highway.
Kaliganj Police arrived on the scene and calmed the protesters, assuring them of swift action. Traffic resumed after the hour-long demonstration.
Jannati Akhter, daughter of Fazlul Haque of Shoulmari Char in Bhotmari union, was a student at Bhotmari SC High School.
She was reportedly alone at home on the afternoon of April 16.
Police recovered her body later that night from a maize field in Shoulmari Char.
That same night, police arrested 20-year-old Belal Hossain, who has since been named the prime accused and remains in district jail, said Selim Malik, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station.
Jannati's father filed a murder case with Kaliganj Police Station the following day, naming Belal and 3-4 unidentified individuals as accused, the OC said.
"The main accused is already in jail, and a charge sheet will be submitted to the court very soon," he added.

Nearly 800 Afghan families return from Pakistan and Iran
By Fidel Rahmati
April 22, 2025
Nearly 800 Afghan families returned from Pakistan and Iran recently, amid ongoing deportations, highlighting the growing migration crisis.
According to Bakhtar News Agency, under the administration of the Taliban, 774 Afghan families have returned from Pakistan and Iran to Afghanistan in the past day. The report, published on Monday, April 21, states that 190 families returned through the Torkham border, 192 through Spin Boldak, 53 from Islam Qala, and 439 families entered Afghanistan via the Silk Bridge in the past week.
The Taliban authorities claim to have provided assistance to these returning families. Despite this, the return of Afghan migrants from Pakistan and Iran continues to be a significant issue, with many families facing uncertain conditions upon their return.
In a related development, on the previous day, 623 families also arrived in Afghanistan from Pakistan and Iran. The ongoing return of Afghan refugees has intensified as both neighboring countries continue to expel Afghan migrants. This trend has been a major concern for Afghanistan, which is already dealing with the economic and social challenges of reintegrating these returnees.
The expulsion of Afghan migrants from Pakistan and Iran is part of a broader regional issue. The pushbacks have been a source of tension and have placed considerable strain on Afghanistan’s already fragile resources. The situation has raised questions about the capacity of Afghanistan’s infrastructure to support the influx of returnees, especially in the face of ongoing economic difficulties.
Recently, Tajudeen Oyewale, the head of UNICEF’s office in Afghanistan, reported that since September 2024, around 600,000 migrants have returned from Pakistan, with approximately two-thirds of them being children. This underscores the growing challenges that Afghanistan faces in addressing the needs of vulnerable populations, particularly children, who are disproportionately affected by the ongoing migration crisis.
The influx of Afghan refugees from Pakistan and Iran remains a critical issue for Afghanistan. The return of these families, many of whom are children, presents significant challenges for the country’s social services and infrastructure. With both Pakistan and Iran continuing their policies of deportation, Afghanistan must find sustainable solutions to support these returnees while addressing the broader regional dynamics at play.
The international community’s support, including agencies like UNICEF, will be crucial in helping Afghanistan cope with this influx. Continued attention and aid are necessary to ensure that these vulnerable populations, particularly children, have access to basic needs such as healthcare, education, and security as they reintegrate into their home country.

RSF shelling kills over 30 in besieged Sudanese city
April 21, 2025
PORT SUDAN: Paramilitary shelling of Sudan’s besieged city of El-Fasher, in the western region of Darfur, has killed more than 30 civilians and wounded dozens more, activists said on Monday.
The attack, which took place on Sunday, involved “heavy artillery shelling” and targeted the city’s residential neighborhoods, said the local resistance committee, one of hundreds of volunteer groups coordinating aid across Sudan.
Since April 2023, the war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has killed tens of thousands, uprooted 13 million, and created what the UN describes as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
El-Fasher, the state capital of North Darfur, remains the last major city in the vast Darfur region that the paramilitary group has not conquered.
Last week, the RSF launched a renewed offensive on the city and two nearby displacement camps — Zamzam and Abu Shouk — killing more than 400 people and displacing some 400,000, according to the UN.
In a bloody ground offensive, the RSF took control of Zamzam camp, where aid workers say up to 1 million people were sheltering.
According to the UN, most of the displaced fled just north, to El-Fasher city itself, or 60 km west to the small town of Tawila.
By Thursday, more than 150,000 people had arrived in El-Fasher, while another 180,000 had fled to Tawila, the UN’s migration agency has said.
Humanitarian aid is nearly nonexistent in both famine-threatened towns.
On Monday, the UN’s humanitarian chief, Tom Fletcher, described the situation in the region as “horrifying.”
He said he had spoken by phone with army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and his rival paramilitary commander Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, who committed to giving “full access to get aid in.”
Throughout the war, both the army and the RSF have been accused of using starvation as a weapon of war against civilians.
International aid agencies have long warned that a full-scale RSF assault on El-Fasher could lead to devastating urban warfare and a new wave of mass displacement.
UNICEF has described the situation as “hell on earth” for at least 825,000 children trapped in and around El-Fasher.
Following the army’s recapture of the capital Khartoum last month, the RSF has intensified efforts to seize El-Fasher, a strategic target for the paramilitary to consolidate its hold on Darfur.
The RSF already controls nearly all of the vast region, about the size of France, and parts of the south.
The army holds the country’s center, east, and north.
However, the UN warned of a catastrophic humanitarian situation as the fighting escalated.
“The humanitarian community in Sudan is facing critical and intensifying operational challenges in North Darfur,” Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the UN’s Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, said on Sunday.
She added that “despite repeated appeals, humanitarian access to El-Fasher and surrounding areas remains dangerously restricted,” warning that the lack of access was increasing the vulnerability of hundreds of thousands of people.”
Medical charity Doctors Without Borders has called for aid airdrops into the city in the face of access restrictions.

NCoS Denies Bomb Explosion Rumours At Maiduguri Custodial Centre
April 22, 2025
By Enioluwa Adeniyi
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has dismissed claims of a bomb explosion at the Maiduguri Custodial Centre in Borno State, calling the reports false, misleading, and capable of inciting unnecessary panic.
In a statement issued on Monday from Abuja, the Public Relations Officer of NCoS, Deputy Controller of Corrections Abubakar Umar, firmly denied the allegations, assuring the public that the facility remains secure and fully operational.
“There has been no explosion or security breach at the Maiduguri Custodial Centre or any other correctional facility across the country,” Umar clarified in the statement.
He further emphasised that all inmates are safe, and daily operations are proceeding without interruption. The NCoS spokesperson urged the public to disregard any such rumour suggesting otherwise.
The NCoS also stated that the ongoing rehabilitation and treatment programs for inmates at the Maiduguri centre are continuing uninterrupted, in line with the service’s broader reform agenda.
Naija News reports that the correctional service assured that the centre remains a vital institution for both incarceration and the rehabilitation of offenders.
The NCoS expressed concerns about the spread of unverified information, particularly on social media, warning that such rumours could erode public confidence and jeopardise national security.
“It is imperative for media outlets and members of the public to confirm sensitive information through official and credible channels,” Umar stressed.
Reaffirming its commitment to the safety and security of inmates, staff, and the wider public, the NCoS stated that it is actively monitoring all custodial centres across the country.
The statement concluded by urging the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating that there is no cause for alarm. “All inmates are going about their treatment regimen without hindrance,” the NCoS added.

Jakim orders recall of products linked to Indonesian porcine DNA findings
By Malay Mail
22 Apr 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 — The Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim) has called for the immediate removal of any food products linked to the Indonesian halal controversy that may have reached Malaysian shelves.
Yesterday, Indonesia announced that several halal-certified items tested positive for porcine DNA, sparking public concern across the region.
Out of 11 affected batches, seven were found to have halal certification while two were uncertified, according to Indonesia’s BPJPH and BPOM.
“As an early preventive measure, Jakim has immediately begun joint monitoring with State Islamic Religious Councils (MAIN) and State Islamic Departments (JAIN) to conduct thorough inspections of the products concerned if found in the local market,” the department said.
Importers involved have been told to alert Jakim and recall the products from circulation in Malaysia.
The department said the move aims to protect Muslim consumers and ensure only genuinely halal products remain on sale.
Yesterday, the Indonesian Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) in coordination with the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) announced the detection of porcine (pig) DNA contamination in processed food products circulating in Indonesia.
Laboratory testing using DNA and/or porcine-specific peptide assays revealed that 11 batches from 9 processed food products contained pig-derived ingredients

Saifuddin Nasution yet to decide on contesting PKR Deputy President’s post
Bernama
22-04- 2025
PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail today said that he has yet to decide whether or not to join the race for the post of deputy president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) in the party polls next month.
The Home Minister, who is also a former PKR secretary-general, emphasised that the party election is a democratic process enshrined in the party’s constitution, and for now, his focus remains on strengthening the party.
In a closed-door meeting yesterday, Saifuddin and current PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli reaffirmed their joint commitment to bolstering the party across various fronts.
“I’m aware of public speculation and some voices suggesting it’s time for me to make some announcements (regarding a potential bid for the deputy presidency)...but I’ve yet to make any decision in that direction.
“Those who are familiar with my track record in the party would know that my loyalty to PKR has never been in question,” he told reporters when asked after the ministry’s monthly assembly here today.
Yesterday, Senior Fellow at the Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research (NASR) Azmi Hassan said the results of the ongoing polls across all 222 PKR divisions may be a clear indication that Saifuddin Nasution should seize the opportunity to once again challenge Rafizi for the party’s number two post.
The political analyst said the momentum on the ground suggests renewed support for Saifuddin to contest the deputy presidency.
In the last PKR election for the 2022-2025 term, Saifuddin lost the deputy presidency race to Rafizi, who is also the Economy Minister and MP for Pandan.
Reflecting on their long-standing roles in the party, Saifuddin noted that both he and Rafizi had recently reiterated their commitment to working together in PKR’s leadership.
He also urged both the grassroots and top leadership to use the PKR Central Leadership Council (MPP) meeting, scheduled for tomorrow, as a constructive platform to address internal party issues.
“I believe tomorrow’s MPP meeting will be the right platform for members to express their views and concerns,” he said.
Commenting on several prominent figures who suffered defeat in the divisional polls, Saifuddin Nasution said that losing should not be seen as a sign of exclusion or rejection from the party.
“Defeat does not mean you are sidelined or cast aside. You continue to serve, you remain loyal to the party, and the leadership will still give you a place. That’s what makes you a big name in the first place,” he said.
Among those who lost the contest were Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Deputy Minister for Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir.

Ahmad Zahid, who also chairs Malaysia’s National Disaster Management Committee, said the prompt and effective coordination clearly demonstrates the AHA Centre’s vital role in ASEAN’s collective disaster response framework.
“The regional solidarity shown by all ASEAN member states through the deployment of search and rescue teams, humanitarian aid, and essential supplies clearly reflects the strong ASEAN spirit,” he said.
He was speaking during his visit to the headquarters of Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and the AHA Centre here on Monday.
According to the Information Team of Myanmar’s State Administration Council, the 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28 claimed 3,726 lives, injured 5,105 people, and left 129 still unaccounted for as of April 18.
The tremors were also felt in neighbouring countries including Thailand.
Ahmad Zahid further emphasised the importance of upholding the “One ASEAN, One Response” principle, saying it must go beyond rhetoric and be reflected in joint actions by ASEAN nations during times of disaster.
Commenting on the visit, Ahmad Zahid expressed admiration for BNPB’s preparedness, stating that Malaysia’s National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) could learn much from its Indonesian counterpart in coordinating emergency response operations.
“While Malaysia has only one Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) to respond to all types of disasters, BNPB has SMART teams specialised in various areas such as fires, floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and maritime accidents,” he noted.
Ahmad Zahid is currently on a three-day official visit to Indonesia, which concludes tomorrow.

No approval for new pig farms in Muslim-majority areas - Perak exco
Bernama
21-04- 2025
IPOH: The Perak government has not approved any new pig farms in areas with a majority Muslim population.
State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan said most existing farms are long-established operations on private land, set up before the introduction of modern farming guidelines.
“As chairman of the Pig Farm Restructuring Committee, I have worked closely with the Veterinary Department, Health Department, local councils, land offices and other stakeholders to take more decisive action,” he said during the winding-up debate on the royal address at the State Legislative Assembly sitting today.
Sivanesan said 30 pig farms had been shut down due to legal enforcement, disease outbreaks, and land ownership or usage issues, reducing the number of farms from 115 at the end of 2022 to 85 currently. These farms are permanently closed and will not be allowed to resume operations.
He also dismissed allegations of widespread illegal pig farming in the state, stressing that all 85 operational farms are licensed by the Perak Veterinary Services Department.
As a long-term solution, the state government is carrying out a legalisation and restructuring exercise, including relocating farms to approved zones and ensuring compliance with the Modern Pig Farming (MPF) concept.
“This includes farms in the Batang Padang district, particularly in the Ayer Kuning constituency, where licence status and zoning compliance are being reviewed,” he said.
Sivanesan was responding to PAS vice-president Datuk Idris Ahmad’s claim that 30 farms had been approved in the two districts, with the possibility of more due to alleged illegal operations.

JOHOR BARU, April 16 — Police have arrested eight individuals, including a woman, in connection with the alleged assault of a man at a flat in Plentong Baru near Masai here last Friday.
Seri Alam district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the incident took place at around 9.30pm, when the victim, a factory operator from Kluang, came after invited by a woman he had met through a social media app.
“After arriving at the house, the victim was then confined where he was then set upon by several local men.
“As a result of the incident, the victim suffered injuries to his lip, left ear and swells on his body,” he said in a statement today.
Those detained comprise seven men and one woman, aged between 19 and 26.
Five of the suspects have criminal records involving drugs and other offences, while urine tests showed four tested positive for methamphetamine.
All suspects have been remanded for six days until April 26, and the case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons.
They are also being investigated under Section 342 for wrongful confinement and Section 385 for causing injury during extortion.
The incident came to public attention after a video showing a group assaulting a young man in a house went viral on Facebook.
Initial investigations revealed the victim had received a message from the woman asking him to meet her at the rented unit in Plentong, about 110km from his home, where he was later attacked.
The 21-year-old victim then lodged a report on Saturday night.

Najib’s trial: Deutsche Bank’s ex-CEO says Bank Negara left it to 1MDB in US$700m switch, no red flags found
By Ida Lim
21 Apr 2025
PUTRAJAYA, April 21 — Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) did not intervene when 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) decided to split its initial US$1 billion lump sum transfer into two transfers of US$700 million and US$300 million, as it viewed it as a “commercial decision”, the High Court heard today.
1MDB in 2009 sent out US$700 million sum to Low Taek Jho’s company Good Star Limited, and US$20 million (equivalent to more than RM60 million) of this money allegedly ended up in former prime minister Najib’s private bank account in 2011.
Najib is on trial over more than RM2 billion of 1MDB funds which were said to have entered his private bank accounts, but he has continued to insist that the huge sums of money were donations to him from Saudi Arabia’s royalty.
Testifying this morning as the 22nd defence witness in Najib’s 1MDB trial, Deutsche Bank (M) Berhad’s former CEO Raymond Yeoh Chen Seong said 1MDB had changed its initial instructions to send US$1 billion overseas to joint venture firm 1MDB-PetroSaudi Limited.
As 1MDB’s new instructions to split up the US$1 billion transfer was different from BNM’s approval, Yeoh said Deutsche Bank had then obtained 1MDB staff’s confirmation and he had also personally called BNM’s Foreign Exchange Administration Department’s Wan Hanisah for clarification.
“Wan Hanisah said that it is not for BNM to say anything, and it is a business decision of 1MDB,” said the 62-year-old who was CEO of Deutsche Bank (M) Berhad from 2006 to 2013.
Following 1MDB’s instructions, Deutsche Bank then sent US$300 million to a JP Morgan bank account, and US$700 million to an RBS Coutts account.
1MDB staff Stephenny Chow in an email reply to Deutsche Bank’s query said that the US$700 million recipient was PetroSaudi International Ltd, and the US$300 million recipient was 1MDB PetroSaudi Ltd.
Yeoh said no red flags were found when Deutsche Bank used these two company names for compliance checks, but also said the US$700 million account was later revealed to be Good Star’s account.
Yeoh’s court testimony today is similar to Ho’s previous testimony as the 30th prosecution witness in the 1MDB trial.
This afternoon, Shafee presented his arguments on why the High Court should not set aside two subpoenas for 1MDB’s two company secretaries to come to court as defence witnesses.
Among other things, Shafee argued that the duo’s court testimony would be relevant to Najib’s defence in the 1MDB trial and not an abuse of court process, and said Najib now only wants to get 1MDB board documents during the May to July 2021 period instead of the initial requested period of the years 2018 to 2024.
1MDB’s lawyer Datuk Lim Chee Wee however argued that the information that Najib is seeking to get through the 1MDB company secretaries is privileged information, and had previously said the subpoenas should be set aside as Najib was on a “fishing expedition”.
Trial judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah said he will deliver his decision on Thursday afternoon on whether the subpoenas will be set aside, and said the 1MDB trial will resume tomorrow morning.
