Islamic Q and A

It is disheartening to see around that some parents express happiness when the newborn child is a male and display their displeasure when the child is a female. This is an attitude of pre-Islamic period, still prevalent in our multicultural society. In the pre-Islamic Arabia, daughters were seen as a liability and source of humiliation….

Is Taqiyya Used to Deceive Non-Muslims?
Kaniz Fatma, New Age Islam

The use of Taqiyya for expanding the religion of Islam is incompatible with Islamic objectives, as it corrupts the soul of Islam based on submission, truth, mental and spiritual purity....

The plain answer is that Islam upholds democracy as a means of good governance. This is the preferred view also supported by the Muslim jurists. In Islam the imam is considered to be the agent (Wakil) of every citizen. The contract of Bayah can be termed a form of voting….

What is Mahram and Non-Mahram in Islam?
Kaniz Fatma, New Age Islam

Allama Alusi says, “the relationship of Mahram by Radaa’ah (breastfeeding) is that of Mahram by blood; which indicates that it is never permitted to marry because of that relationship of Mahram.”...

Is Mut’ah or Temporary Marriage Valid or Invalid?
Is Mut’ah or Temporary Marriage Valid or Invalid?
Ghulam Ghaus Siddiqi, New Age Islam

According to the Sunni Islamic Jurisprudence, the Mut’ah Marriage is forbidden. Once this temporary marriage was permissible in the beginning of Islam but soon it was abrogated and declared Haram (forbidden) until the Day of Judgment....

What Is Islam, Iman and Ihsan?
Kaniz Fatma, New Age Islam

The Hadith of Gabriel describes three levels of faith, Iman, Islam and Ihsan. This hadith is narrated by Abu Huraira that one day while the Prophet was sitting in the company of some people, (The angel) Gabriel (Jibraeel or Jibreel) came and asked, "What is Iman (faith)?" ...

The classical scholars opine that those who are not Mujtahidin should seek any verdict from a qualified expert in the field because it is these people who are greater in knowledge. The Prophet’s companions used to consult those who were greater in knowledge among them....

A common misconception is that Islam gives a higher status to men in comparison to women. This misconception is mostly made by the misunderstanding of the verse (4:34) in which God Almighty says, “Men are maintainers (qawwamun also translated as ‘caretakers’, ‘in charge of’) of women”...

In Islam a husband can delegate the right of divorce to his wife or any third person.  This delegated divorce is known as Talaq-e-Tafweez also spelt as Talaq-i-Tafwid. This delegation can be made at the time of marriage by way of a prenuptial agreement, with or without conditions...

Hazrat Abu Bakr and his army fought against the rejecters of Zakat who were also known as apostates, not because they simply refused to pay Zakat but also that they denied the rights of the poor and needy by their refusal...

Generally the hadith corpus is classified into eleven ways; for example, classification of hadith based on the numbers of its chain of narration, classification according to the accepted and rejected hadith, classification based on whether or not some hadith can be used to deduce the ruling, classification based on the merits of the narrators, classification based on the contradictions in the hadith-words of the two narrators, etc....

The people in the pre-Islamic days used to believe the month of Safar up to the 13th day to be inauspicious. Some of them called this month a snake which lives in the stomach of a human being and when hungry bits the person.. ...

Ijtihad is the ability for deducing laws in cases to which no express text or a rule already determined. Ijtihad does not take place in the Ahkam Sharia (Sharia rulings) whose evidence (Daleel) is decisive (qati’), but it occurs only in those rulings whose evidence is speculative (Zanni)....

Taqlid can be classified into two groups; (1) Taqleed-e-Shar’i and (2) Taqleed-e-Ghair-Shar’i. Taqlid-e-Shari’ means to follow someone with related to the rules of Islamic Jurisprudence without knowing the evidence. For example, the following the four imams; Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Shafi’, Imam Malik and Imam Hambal in the detailed rules related to the prayer, fasting, Zakat, pilgrimage, public dealings etc. ...

The person who performs Taqlid is known as a Muqallid whereas the one who rejects Taqlid is known as a Ghair-Muqallid. Therefore the person who follows any of the four imams, Abu Hanifa, Shafei, Malik or Hambal, in religious matters is known as Muqallid...

Sadqa-e-Fitr is compulsory (Wajib) on every free Muslim who owns an amount equal to the Nisab in excess of what is necessary for the satisfaction of the primary necessities of life (Haajah Asliyyah). According to Hanafis, three conditions are stipulated; the giver must (1) be free, (2) be a Muslim and (3) own a Nisab. The obligation is due to the words of the Prophet (peace be upon him), “Pay for each free person and slave, minor or major, one-half Sa’ of wheat or one Sa’ of dates or one Sa’ of barely”...

What is necessarily important for us is to attain Fiqh of Quran and Ahadith without which we sometimes make such an interpretation which goes against the spirit and objective of Islam. Thus significance of Fiqh and Faqih in our life is evident. Fiqh guides us to proper understanding of Din and enables us to save others from wrong understanding of Islam....

Cooperating with ISIS or any other “Islamist” terror outfits is forbidden and an act of severe oppression. The reason is that such outfits are committing sins of transgression whereas Almighty Allah says in the Quran, “And Cooperate in righteousness (birr) and piety (Taqwa), but do not cooperate in sin (Ithm) and transgression (‘Udwan)....

The Prophet (peace be upon him) is reported to have said, “Indeed, Najran and her allies are under the protection of God and the guarantee of the Messenger of God. They are to be protected in their wealth, lives, lands and religion. This includes their priests, monks, those who are present amongst them and those who are absent and others amongst them, and their delegations and the like. They shall not be forced to change that (faith) which they are upon and no right of theirs is to be forfeited. No monk, priest or attendant amongst them should lose that which is in his possession, be it plentiful or scarce, and no fear or danger will threaten them”...

Let us Muslims explore all ghastly terror attacks perpetrated by terror outfits all around the globe and weigh up all limits set by Allah Almighty in clear terms. Several years of exploration have pushed me to pick out a firm resolution to believe, to the fullest surety, that the terror outfits committing crimes in the name of Jihad and Islam are transgressors....

Though the guidance of holy Quran is meant for everyone, believer or non-believer, as mentioned in another verse of the Quran “guidance for the people”, only the people of Taqwa benefit from the Quran. It is therefore Allah Almighty said “guidance for the Muttaqin”. For example, it is said “rain is for vegetation, i.e. the rain benefits vegetation, while it also rains on the barren land”. Those that are Muttaqin get benefit from the Quran while its guidance is meant for all mankind....

Forced belief is not sincere belief.  ….

He Almighty is not an ignorant [Jahil]. He is not incapable [‘Aajiz), nor powerless, nor helpless. Ice melts into water and becomes a single unit but Allah Almighty does not incarnate into anything or any shape. In short He eternally possesses all His Divine Attributes of Perfection—including Essential or Divine-Self Attributes (Sifat Zaatiyya), Related Attributes (Sifat Idafiyya) and Negative Attributes (Sifat Salabiyah)....

Positive Attributes which are essentially befitting Allah are many in number but eight of them are popularly listed as 1) Divine knowledge (Ilm), 2) Divine Omnipotence (Qudrat), 3) Divine Hearing (Sama’), 4) Divine Seeing (Basr), 5) Divine Willing (Irada), 6) Bringing into being (Takween), 7) Divine Speech (Kalam) and 8) Divine Living (Hayat)…

This view stands on the time of revelation and not on the city of revelation. Second point is that, it is compulsory for an exegete to learn Makki and Madani verses, without which he is not eligible for deducing any wilful understanding from the Quran. This is an important aspect without which a comprehensive understanding of the Quran is extremely difficult and even impossible.....
