Girls Of
Gujarat Vidyapith Mahatma Gandhi’s School, Stopped From Performing the
Inclusive Sarva Dharm Prarthana Started By Mahatma Gandhi, Based On Prayers
From Several Religions

Gujarat Vidyapith
----
14.08.23
Mehul Devkala
The ruling dispensation’s takeover of
the Gujarat Vidyapith, founded by Mahatma Gandhi, last year has started
showing its true colours.
During the customary Upasana (prayer
meet) on August 4, the Vidyapith’s girl students were stopped from performing
Sarva Dharm Prarthana by a Hindi professor. Not only that, the girls were
publicly insulted.
A lady professor, who was present at the
time, protested on the spot against such shameful behaviour of the Hindi
professor. The Sarva Dharm Prarthana has been the Vidyapith’s tradition and
part of the value system since its inception.
On Monday, the Vidyapith’s students held
a black-ribbon protest in Gandhian way against the wilful act of stopping the
Sarva Dharm Prarthana.
The project of taking over Gandhian
institutes all over the country is a mission accomplished. From the demolition
of Sarv Seva Sangh at Varanasi to conferring the Gandhi peace prize on the Gita
Press, the scheme was very well thought out.
As the 2024 general election nears, the
ruling regime’s political laboratory, that is the Gujarat government’s
machinery, is in full gear. It does not have the time to take over universities
one after another.
So, the Gujarat government is all set to
table a common universities bill in the upcoming monsoon session of the Assembly.
Once this bill is passed and it becomes
the common university act, six of the major universities of Gujarat will come
under the total control of the government.
This act will pull the plug on senate
and syndicate elections. There won’t be any elections, and the government will
directly appoint the members of a new body called the board of governance.
It will spell an end to student politics
in the universities of Gujarat. In addition to this, the vice-chancellor’s
three-year term will be increased to five years.
Power-hungry leaders always fear student
protests inside universities. Protests by students across the world have
changed the course of history.
The Navnirman Andolan (1974) of Gujarat
started with the student agitation on campus against the hike in the hostel
food bill and it resulted in a state-wide public protest and the dissolution of
the elected government.
Many political leaders came from student
politics. Controlling universities means controlling the academia and students
and also dictating what they study.
The proposed act will do away with the
autonomy of universities. It will fully empower the government to carry out all
the administrative and academic appointments.
In 2022, the Supreme Court had quashed
one such appointment of the vice-chancellor of Sardar Patel University, one of
the prominent universities of Gujarat, and found it contrary to the UGC’s
norms.
The proposed common university act is
not as simple as it looks. These universities located on prime locations in
major cities of Gujarat own land worth thousands of crores of rupees.
It is feared that the government may
claim these lands in the name of redevelopment and expansion in the future. The
Sabarmati Ashram redevelopment project is a recent example.
“Ishwar Allah Tero Naam, SabkoSanmati De
Bhagwan” — one of the favourite Bhajans of Mahatma Gandhi — will become a thing
of the past for the Gujarat Vidyapith and it should not surprise anyone. After
all, nothing surprises us anymore these days.

Goekay Akbulut, Turkiye-Born German MP,
Says She Was Detained In Turkiye For Social Media Posts

August 14, 2023
BERLIN: A German lawmaker said on Sunday
she was detained for several hours when entering Turkiye earlier this month
based on social media posts she made in 2019, adding that she would still
travel to Turkiye and speak her mind about its government.
Goekay Akbulut, a Bundestag member for
far-left Die Linke party, was detained in Antalya airport on Aug. 3 after an
arrest warrant was issued by the Turkish public prosecutor for alleged “terror
propaganda,” she said.
Germany is home to the world’s largest
Turkish diaspora community, but relations between Berlin and Ankara have been
strained in recent years by German criticism of President Tayyip Erdogan’s
crackdown on suspected opponents after a failed coup in 2016 and Turkiye’s
military offensive against Kurdish militia in Syria in 2019.
Akbulut, a Turkiye-born German citizen
of Kurdish heritage, was released after making contact with the German foreign
ministry, she said. Turkish authorities were not immediately available to
comment.
Akbulut has criticized the Turkish
government for “waging a brutal war against the Kurdish population inside and
outside its borders,” according to her official website.
“I will travel to #Tuerkei in October
again as part of the delegation trip of the German-Turkish Parliamentary Group
and, as always, will not mince my words: #FreeThemAll,” she said in a post on
social media platform X on Sunday.
It was not clear exactly what she was
referring to, nor which social media posts she believed triggered the Turkish
arrest warrant.
The German embassy in Ankara and the
consulate in Antalya were in contact with lawmaker, a source at the German
foreign ministry told Reuters.
Akbulut, 40, has called for the lifting
of a German ban on the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which is considered a
terrorist group by the European Union and the United States.

Journalist Heba Zakaria Sheds Light On Marginalisation Of Islamic Female Activists In Egypt
13 August 2023

Journalist Heba Zakaria, an eyewitness
to the Rabaa massacre, provides a compelling analysis of the dual
marginalisation faced by Islamic female activists in both national and international
media platforms.
Drawing from her research and
experiences, Zakaria underlines the paradoxical representation and systematic
suppression that these women encounter, contrasting their treatment to other
non-Islamic female activists.

Muslim women stitch Tricolour for
Independence Day in Odisha's Kendrapara
14th August 2023
KENDRAPARA: Around 120 Muslim women of a
self-help group (SHG) at Golarhat village in Kendrapara’sDerabish block are
busy stitching national flags to meet the huge demand for Tricolour on
Independence Day on August 15.
Sarifa Begum (24) of Utkal Grameen SHG
is an expert flag maker with two years of experience. “All my family members
are involved in the art of making national flags. This is a busy season for us
and we cannot waste any time,” said Sarifa while helping her mother to sew a
flag.
Like Sarifa, hundreds of women and girls
have been toiling round-the-clock for the last one month to complete their
orders. While some prefer to work in their homes, others stitch the flags in
groups at workshops.“The sale of national flags is booming and flag makers have
bagged more orders than their expectations. We have already sold around 10,000
flags,” said Noorjahan Begum (25).
Many flag makers have already run out of
stocks while others are busy meeting the increasing demand on the eve of
Independence Day. The cost of a national flag starts from Rs 50 and goes up to
Rs 300. Each artisan earns around Rs 10 to Rs 100 to stitch a flag. Sabnam
Begum (30) said an artisan family earns around Rs 4,000 to Rs 6,000 by sewing
flags of different sizes.
“Members of our SHG and producer group
stitch dresses for schoolchildren, bed sheets, jackets, etc as we get financial
assistance from the Mission Shakti. But on the eve of Independence Day and
Republic Day, we make national flags,” she added.
Coordinator of the district Mission
Shakti Kailash Chandra Senapati said, “With our guidance, the SHG and producer
group of Golarhat village are making hundreds of national flags. We are also
helping them to sell the flags.”
