Iranian Authorities Arrest Suspended University Student, Milan Khajeh’I, For Anti-Government Activities

Milan Khajeh’i, 30, was taken into custody, but authorities have not disclosed her location or the reason for her arrest

Iranian security forces arrested a suspended university student in Shiraz who had previously been sentenced to prison for anti-government activities.

Milan Khajeh’i, 30, was taken into custody, but authorities have not disclosed her location or the reason for her arrest.

Khajeh’i, a history student at Zahedan University, had been sentenced to one year in prison by the Zahedan Revolutionary Court for distributing anti-government leaflets, writing slogans at the university, and running a Telegram channel.

An appeals court reduced the sentence to five months, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.

The court cited “classified intelligence documents” in its ruling.

Iran has arrested hundreds of students and activists since nationwide protests erupted in 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody.

Rights groups say detainees often face prolonged detention without access to lawyers or family members.

‘My Five Children Were Slaughtered By Terrorists’ – Msurshima Apeh, Tell US Congress

November 21, 2025

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

A survivor of the Yelwata massacre in Benue State, Msurshima Apeh, on Thursday gave a heart-wrenching account of how she watched armed attackers kill her five children during the June 2025 assault.

Apeh testified virtually before the United States House Subcommittee on Africa, which convened to review President Donald Trump’s redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC).

Recounting the horror, Apeh said armed men stormed the camp where hundreds of displaced families were asleep.

Apeh said, “When we went to sleep that night around 9 pm, the Fulani terrorists attacked us where we were sleeping. We were locked inside the camp, Yelwata, and they were butchering them with cutlasses and shooting guns as well.”

She told the lawmakers that after the attackers slaughtered several occupants, they set the building ablaze.

She said, “When the torture had finished at some point in time, they poured petrol on the building and the majority of them were set ablaze.”

In an emotional narration, Apeh said she escaped death by climbing a tree she spotted in the chaos.

Apeh disclosed, “In the course of this action, I saw a tree when I lifted my eyes. I raised my hands on the tree and climbed up where I was able to hide myself. My five children that I left below were crying, and in my presence, they were being slaughtered by the terrorists”

She explained that she remained hidden as the attackers continued their rampage, saying the violence around her drowned her cries for help.

Apeh said she eventually fled into the bush before rescue teams arrived. She said, “I ran out into the bush at some point, and those who came for rescue will now bring me out of that place at some point, and I was able to witness the whole drama. When the people came, we were relocated to a new camp.”

The Yelwata attack occurred in June 2025 in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. Early reports estimated the death toll between 100 and 200, while more than 3,000 residents were displaced.

Many survivors were later relocated to camps in neighbouring Nasarawa State.

Growing Number of Iranian Women Imprisoned Over Financial Debt

November 21, 2025

Most women in Iranian prisons are incarcerated for financial debts, unpaid guarantees, or unintentional crimes, according to a report published by the newspaper Arman-e-Emrooz.

The report, citing official statistics, documents what it describes as the “feminization of poverty in Iran” and highlights the rising number of women imprisoned for financial reasons.

Asadollah Joulaei, head of Iran's National Blood Money Headquarters, said that 73 per cent of female prisoners are mothers, many of whom have more than three children.

He added that these women bear “the heavy burden of providing for their families.”

Joulaei also revealed that 24 women prisoners hold doctoral degrees, saying that “prison is not limited to the illiterate or marginalized; some professional and educated women are also imprisoned due to financial problems.”

The report indicates that the age of women prisoners ranges from years 20-year-old to a woman born in 1935.

In an interview with the newspaper, Iranian sociologist Fatemeh Kabirnataj described the statistics as “a clear sign of structural discrimination and deep social divides.”

She said, “The main crime of many women is financial debt - a phenomenon arising from economic inequality and women’s severely limited access to financial resources.”

“Women lack economic support networks, and the absence of this security has made them more vulnerable to financial crises,” she added.

Kabirnataj described the 73 per cent figure of incarcerated mothers as “a double social catastrophe,” arguing that maternal imprisonment exposes not only the women but entire families, especially children, to collapse, poverty, and psychological harm.

The report emphasizes the need for “serious reform” of the criminal justice system, saying “many women prisoners remain incarcerated for years due to debts they cannot pay.”

“The lack of social support, high living costs, and limited access to economic opportunities create a cycle of detention, poverty, and family disintegration,” it said.
