----------
NEW DELHI: The Human Rights Watch (HRW) has alleged that Indian authorities have expelled hundreds of ethnic Bengali Muslims to Bangladesh without due process in recent weeks, claiming they are "illegal immigrants", though many of them are Indian citizens from states bordering Bangladesh.
The New York-based rights body said the expulsions are continuing.
The government of India, HRW said, should stop deporting people without due process and instead ensure everyone has access to procedural safeguards against arbitrary detention and expulsion.
"BJP is fueling discrimination by arbitrarily expelling Bengali Muslims from the country, including Indian citizens," alleged Elaine Pearson, Asia director at HRW.

‘We Are Indians, Why Must We Prove It Again?’: Men Quizzed By Gurgaon Cops During Verification Drive
by Abhimanyu Hazarika
July 26, 2025

Khan was among several men who were rounded up by the Gurgaon Police as part of a ‘routine verification’ drive to identify Bangladeshis and Rohingya living illegally in the city (Express/Abhimanyu Hazarika)
----------
On July 16, Rabiul Khan (40) and his family sat down to have lunch at their home in the Badshahpur slum in Gurgaon’s Sector 66 when the police showed up — and picked him up.
“They took my phone… I could only use it for a few seconds to tell my wife where I was… they checked all my ID proofs. I told them I am from Malda in West Bengal, but they said you are Bangladeshi,” said Khan.
He was eventually released from a ‘holding centre’ at Sector 40 on the evening of July 23, where his wife, Chavi Bibi (39), had been waiting.
Khan was among several men who were rounded up by the Gurgaon Police as part of a ‘routine verification’ drive to identify Bangladeshis and Rohingya living illegally in the city. The move sparked panic among the Bengali-speaking migrant community, prompting many to leave the city.
Sitting on a bench under the shade of a tree near the Shamshan Ghat on Friday, Khan spoke about his ordeal. “They demanded that I reveal the identities of my Bangladeshi neighbours. I was slapped twice…,” he alleged.
“I had my digital voter ID and PAN card on my phone, they checked them… but they did not let me go immediately,” said Khan.
“Our documents clearly show that we are Indian, yet they were still using force.”
Khan said he was held at different centres for a week. “At one of the centres, out of 130, only two were Hindus…”
He has not gone back to work but has decided not to go home for now. Khan said he has been working in Gurgaon for the past nine years, doing odd jobs like walking dogs and washing cars in upscale housing societies.
He said he was lucky he had a helpful landlord in Surender Jatav, who stood up for him and waited outside the detention centre. Jatav said, “They are Hindustani (Indians), our own people… If they are guilty, investigate — we are with you (police).”
Asked about the facilities inside the holding centre, Khan said, “We were given the same two meals every day — a little bit of rice and dal. But the other facilities were good, we had a mattress and decent toilets.”
His fellow slum resident, Anaraul Haque, 45, has been in Gurgaon since childhood. But he, too, was picked up by the police. “They came last Wednesday after I had dropped my daughter off at her school at 8 am. The police had been asking about me… They hit me on the back twice and took me to their car along with two of my relatives,” he alleged.
At the holding centre, he alleged that one of the policemen asked him if “he was Bangladeshi, how many Muslims are in the area, and how long he had really been living in Gurgaon?”.
Haque said he told them he was not a Bangladeshi and showed his documents, but the police allegedly said he was not cooperating and took him to Sohna. He said he was let go only after his panchayat office back home emailed some documents.
Tejul Islam, who was questioned by a police team in Sector 26, said the officers were rude during their brief encounter. “They said, ‘Tell us now if you’re Bangladeshi.’ I showed them my documents… If we are Indian citizens, why are we being asked to prove it again after so many years of being accepted?” he said.
Adam Ali, who was picked up from Chakkapur, said, “They just picked me up, took my phone and left my family worried… I wasn’t beaten, but I was treated with constant suspicion.”
A Gurgaon Police spokesperson said all the alleged suspects were released from the holding centres by late Thursday night.
“There is no question of targeting any community… There have been no instances of violence or demands for bribes to force confessions. The documents requested are part of routine verification, and individuals are released as soon as their documents are authenticated by the local village authorities or the district magistrate.”
On Friday, police said eight Bangladeshi nationals were detained and will be deported.

A third of UK MPs urge Starmer to recognize Palestine

-----------
A third of the UK House of Commons has called on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to officially recognize Palestine, as pressure mounts on Israel to allow food and medical supplies into Gaza.
The appeal follows French President Emmanuel Macron’s pledge to recognize Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly in September. Both Israel and the US have criticized the move, arguing that it would embolden Hamas.
In a letter published on Friday, 221 MPs from nine parties urged Starmer and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy to grant recognition as part of the country’s longstanding support for a two-state solution.
“Whilst we appreciate the UK does not have it in its power to bring about a free and independent Palestine, UK recognition would have a significant impact due to our historic connections and our membership on the UN Security Council,” the letter said. The MPs argued that Britain has a particular responsibility, having administered the Mandate for Palestine from 1919 to 1948.
According to The Guardian, UK Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, and Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood are among the cabinet ministers lobbying for the move.
Despite growing pressure, Starmer has stopped short of an immediate commitment. “Recognition of a Palestinian state has to be one of those steps. I am unequivocal about that. But it must be part of a wider plan which ultimately results in a two-state solution and lasting security for Palestinians and Israelis,” he said on Friday after a phone call with Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The three leaders called for a ceasefire and urged Israel to “immediately lift restrictions on the flow of aid” into the besieged enclave. They also said Hamas must disarm and “must have no role in the future of Gaza.”
The Kremlin reaffirmed on Friday that Russia has recognized Palestinian statehood since Soviet times and continues to support a two-state solution under international law.

CAIR Action Urge Muslim Voters to Meet Lawmakers During August Congressional Recess
July 25, 2025

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, and its 501(c)(4) affiliate CAIR Action today urged American Muslim voters and community leaders to meet with their members of Congress during the August Congressional recess. The organizations also released their joint 2025 August Recess Toolkit, a practical guide to help communities schedule meetings and advocate on urgent issues impacting civil rights and global justice.
Each year, Congress breaks for a summer recess. In 2025, the House recess began on July 23, and the Senate follows on August 2, with both chambers returning to Washington on September 2. This recess period is a critical opportunity for constituents to meet with lawmakers in their home districts and advocate for policy changes that reflect justice, equality, and constitutional rights.
This year’s toolkit focuses on four urgent areas of concern:
Genocide in Gaza: The U.S. continues to provide Israel with weapons and political cover despite more than 60,000 Palestinians killed. Advocates are urged to support the Block the Bombs Act and oppose the Bunker Buster Act.
Unauthorized War with Iran: President Trump’s June airstrikes on Iran were unauthorized and unconstitutional. Congress must support the War Powers Resolutions and No War Against Iran Act to prevent further escalation.
Expanded Muslim Ban: A revived and expanded version of the Muslim Ban now targets 19 countries. Congress must pass the NO BAN Act and the Access to Counsel Act to end religious and racial profiling.
Free Speech Under Attack: Congress is considering bills and launching investigations that criminalize Palestinian rights advocacy and threaten nonprofits. Muslims are urged to oppose the misleadingly titled Antisemitism Awareness Act, the Countering Hate Against Israel by Federal Contractors Act (H.R. 3050), the IGO Anti-Boycott Act (H.R. 867), and any return of the Nonprofit Killer Bill.
In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:
“This year’s August recess may be the most consequential in a generation. We are witnessing an unfolding genocide in Gaza, the return of the Muslim and African Ban, and an unprecedented wave of McCarthyist repression aimed at silencing Muslim voices and criminalizing pro-Palestinian advocacy. Every Muslim in America must speak directly to their elected officials because if we stay silent, our rights will be ignored, dismissed, or erased. But if we show up, we won’t just defend our rights – we’ll organize, mobilize, and build the power needed to protect our communities for generations to come.”
In a statement, CAIR Action Executive Director Basim Elkarra said:
“This toolkit isn’t just a resource, it’s a blueprint for building real political power. We’re calling on American Muslims to sit down face-to-face with their members of Congress and send an unmistakable message: our communities are informed, organized, and ready to lead – not later, but now. The stakes are too high for silence, and the time to act is already upon us.”

Arab and Gulf countries welcome France recognition of Palestinian state
July 25, 2025

Saudi Arabia and fellow Gulf Arab states on Friday welcomed President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement that France would recognize the state of Palestine, and urged other countries to follow suit, (FILE/AFP)
------------
RIYADH: Gulf Arab states on Friday welcomed President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement that France would recognize the state of Palestine, and urged other countries to follow suit.
Other European Union members have recognized Palestine since the Gaza war erupted in October 2023 but France is the first member of the G7 group of major advanced economies to do so.
The Saudi foreign ministry said “the kingdom commends this historic decision, which reaffirms the international community’s consensus on the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and to establish their independent state.”
It called on other countries “that have not yet recognized the State of Palestine to take similar positive steps.”
Macron said on Thursday that France would formally recognize a Palestinian state during a United Nations meeting in September.
A ministerial-level meeting co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia to discuss a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is planned for later this month.
Qatar, a key mediator in indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas on ending the Gaza war, also welcomed the French move.
Its foreign ministry said the move “constitutes significant support for the legitimate rights of the brotherly Palestinian people” and “contributes to advancing prospects for achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region.”
The Kuwaiti foreign ministry said it “commended this significant step.”
The six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) — which also includes the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, both of which have ties with Israel — also praised the move.
The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates described the French announcement as a step in the right direction. Ministry spokesperson Ambassador Dr. Sufian Qudah said the decision is essential to counter efforts aimed at denying the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination and the establishment of a sovereign state on their national land.

3 booked for ‘luring’ woman, daughter into adopting Islam
Jul 26, 2025
Lucknow: Balrampur police on Friday registered an FIR against three people, including Gasdi Nagar Panchayat councillor Jalaluddin alias Jalu, village head Shakeel Ahmad, and one Ismail, for illegally luring a Hindu woman and her daughter into adopting Islam.
The woman's husband, Murali, alleged that while he was in Mumbai for work, Ismail befriended his family and influenced their conversion, with active support from the councillor and village head. Police said they were also probing if the gang had any links to Chhangur Baba.
The matter came to light following a complaint submitted to the superintendent of police regarding the forced religious conversion of Hindu women in the region.
According to the complainant, Murali, a native of Khadgaura Babhnapurwa village, he moved to Mumbai for work along with his wife and daughter. There, Ismail from Puraena befriended his family and allegedly manipulated and coerced his wife and daughter into converting to Islam.
Murali further alleged that the conversions were carried out with the active support of Jalaluddin and Shakeel Ahmed. Police say that Jalaluddin was spreading conversion activities in the region in a pattern similar to Jamaluddin alias Chhangur, who was recently arrested for running a religious conversion racket in nearby Utraula.
In this specific case, the conversion reportedly occurred in Khadgaura Babhnapurwa village and involved both the woman and her children.

Uttarakhand Transport loses Rs 1 crore since July 12 as Kanwar Yatra disrupts routes
Piyush Srivastava
26.07.25
The Uttarakhand Transport Corporation has suffered a loss of ₹1 crore since July 12 because of Kanwariya-related chaos on the roads.
"Buses couldn't ply on many national highways because of the Kanwar Yatra. The corporation has suffered a loss of ₹1 crore since the day the Yatra started," Vishal Chandra, regional zonal manager of the corporation, told reporters in Haridwar on Thursday.
Earlier, corporation officials had said they had reduced the number of buses because of the lower number of passengers during the Kanwar Yatra.
"Thirty buses ran daily between Ramnagar (Nainital) and the New Delhi depot, but this has come down to 20," Naveen Chandra Arya, assistant general manager of the Ramnagar depot, had told reporters.
The situation is similar on other routes.
"The loss of ₹1 crore was incurred in the first 13 days of July. This will increase because the Yatra will continue officially until August 9, and Kanwariyas may continue to come to the state after that. We have recently recovered from a loss and were able to pay the salaries of our staff and maintain the buses. We can't afford such losses again," an officer with the corporation said.
"Passengers don’t travel when they know the roads will be congested. Most passengers who travel from Nainital and Dehradun to New Delhi almost every week cancelled their trips during the Kanwar Yatra,” he added.

India-Pakistan ceasefire prompted by Islamabad, not US pressure: Centre tells Parliament
25.07.25
The government on Friday informed Parliament that the ceasefire between India and Pakistan on May 10 was not prompted by United States interference, but followed a direct military channel initiated by Islamabad.
Responding to a written query in the Lok Sabha on whether “the ceasefire between India and Pakistan was arrived at the behest of the US interference just after three days of operations against Pakistan when the Indian Armed Forces had the upper hand in the conflict,” Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh offered a clarification.
“All our interlocutors were given a common message that India’s approach was focused, measured and non-escalatory,” Singh said.
He added that the “cessation of firing and military activity” came after a conversation between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries. “This contact was initiated by the Pakistani side,” Singh said.
India, the minister added, had already met its key objectives by May 8. “India had already achieved on May 8 the main objectives that it had set forth in terms of destroying designated terrorism infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
The military exchange followed the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Singh noted that between that date and May 10, “there were a number of diplomatic conversations with various countries at different levels, including with the United States.”
He clarified that discussions with the US did not involve trade or negotiation pressure related to the conflict. “With specific regard to the US, it was conveyed to Vice President J.D. Vance on May 9 that India would appropriately respond if Pakistan launched a major attack. The issue of our trade discussions did not come up in the context of conversations pertaining to the conflict,” Singh stated.
On the issue of third-party mediation, the government reiterated its consistent position. “Our long standing position remains that any outstanding issue with Pakistan will be discussed only bilaterally. This has been made clear to all nations, including by the Prime Minister to the US President,” Singh told the House.
On May 10, MEA had confirmed that the Pakistani Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) called the Indian DGMO on May 10 to propose a cessation of hostilities.
Since May, Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for brokering the India-Pakistan ceasefire, stating that the United States facilitated negotiations leading to a "full and immediate ceasefire" after a "long night of talks mediated by the United States".
Congress and Opposition parties have strongly criticised Trump's repeated claims of brokering the ceasefire, focusing their criticism especially on PM Modi's lack of response. Rahul Gandhi has accused the Prime Minister of "remaining silent" despite Trump making the assertion "25 times," and has questioned the government's transparency by saying, “Kuch toh daal mein kaala hai” (there’s something fishy).

Mumbai Police opposes bail of Bangladeshi man accused of stabbing Saif Ali Khan
Jul 26, 2025
The Mumbai Police have opposed the bail application of Bangladeshi national Shariful Islam, who was arrested for allegedly trespassing into the Bandra residence of actors Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor on January 16, 2025, and attacking Khan with a sharp weapon.
Additional Public Prosecutor D M Lade, representing the State, submitted that there is strong evidence against the accused, including CCTV footage, facial recognition data and fingerprint analysis.
The prosecution also cited a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report confirming that the knife fragment lodged near Khan’s spine, the broken blade recovered from Islam, and the blade piece found at the scene, all originated from the same weapon.
The prosecution described the offence as of a "very serious nature" and warned that releasing Islam on bail could pose a risk of similar crimes being committed in the future.
The accused, Shariful Islam, represented by advocates Vipul Dushing and Ajay Gawali, filed a fresh bail plea claiming innocence and arguing that there is no evidence to support the charge of attempted murder.
In March, Shariful Islam had filed a bail application, which was subsequently withdrawn after the police submitted a chargesheet in April. His fresh bail plea is now scheduled to be heard by the court on August 1.
The Bandra police registered an FIR against an unidentified individual who had trespassed into actor Saif Ali Khan’s residence on January 16. The incident came to light when a staff member spotted the intruder and raised an alarm, prompting Khan to intervene.
Upon being confronted, the intruder allegedly attacked the actor with a hexa blade, inflicting injuries to his hand, neck and back. Khan was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment, while the assailant fled the scene.
Based on CCTV footage and technical surveillance, Islam was arrested from Thane three days later.

8 Bangladeshi Nationals, 2 Indian Traffickers Held in Foiled Infiltration Attempt in Assam’s South Salmara
July 25, 2025
In a pre-dawn operation based on specific intelligence inputs, security forces in Assam’s South Salmara-Mankachar district apprehended eight Bangladeshi nationals and two Indian touts allegedly involved in an infiltration and trafficking attempt across the Indo-Bangladesh border.
The arrests were made around 5:30 am in the Fekamari Tinali area, a known sensitive zone for cross-border movement.
The operation was led by the Assistant Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) and involved the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Border), officers from Kharuabandha Outpost, and troops from the 183 Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF). Intelligence had suggested that a group of Bangladeshi nationals had reached the Fekamari area and were attempting to cross back into Bangladesh through riverine routes under the jurisdiction of the Sanjay Sadhu and Deepchar border outposts.
The eight Bangladeshi nationals hail from the Rajshahi district of Bangladesh and had reportedly entered India through various border points across West Bengal and Tripura. One among them, Nadim Islam, is believed to have entered the country legally on a visa through the Haridaspur Integrated Check Post in West Bengal but was found to be part of the group attempting to re-cross illegally.
The two Indian nationals arrested have been identified as Khairul Islam, a resident of Borobila, and Nurul Islam from Nandia, Pipulbari. Both are suspected to be part of a trafficking network operating along the international border. A black SUV, which was allegedly being used to transport the infiltrators, has been seized.
All the Bangladeshi nationals are currently being held at the Sishumara Border Outpost of the BSF, where biometric data collection and interrogation are ongoing. Authorities confirmed that they would be repatriated to Bangladesh after completion of the necessary verification and coordination with Bangladeshi counterparts.
Meanwhile, legal proceedings have been initiated against the two Indian traffickers under the Foreigners Act and relevant sections dealing with human trafficking.
Officials have launched a wider investigation to uncover potential links to organised cross-border trafficking operations. Coordination is being maintained with cyber cell units and local intelligence teams to trace communication records and movement patterns of the accused.
The district of South Salmara-Mankachar, bordering Bangladesh’s Rajshahi division, is considered one of Assam’s most porous and vulnerable border sectors. The riverine terrain and limited fencing in certain stretches make it a frequent corridor for illegal migration and trafficking.

Pro-Palestinian convict freed by France after 41 years
26 July, 2025
Hugh Schofield
Georges Abdallah, a 74-year-old Lebanese teacher who became a left-wing symbol for the Palestinian cause, has been freed by France on Friday after 41 years in jail.
Described by his lawyer as "the man who has spent the longest time in prison for events linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," Abdallah left jail in the south of France in the early hours of Friday and was due to be put on a flight directly to Beirut.
Convicted in 1987 for complicity in the murders in France of two diplomats – one American, one Israeli – Abdallah has gradually been forgotten by the wider public.
But his release remained a cause célèbre for activists on the Marxist-Leninist left, with which he still identifies.
His stern-looking bearded face continued to peer from banners in left-wing demonstrations; and once a year protesters gathered to demand his freedom outside his prison in the Pyrenees. Three left-led French municipalities declared him an "honorary citizen".
Though eligible for parole since 1999, he saw successive requests for liberty turned down. According to supporters, this was because of pressure on the French government from the US and Israel.
Interviewed recently by the French news agency AFP at his cell in Lannemazan jail, he said he had kept sane by focusing on the Palestinian "struggle".
"If I had not had that… well, 40 years – it can turn your brain to mush," he said.
On the walls of his cell, Abdallah kept a picture of the 1960s revolutionary Che Guevara and postcards from supporters around the world. A desk was covered with piles of newspapers.
Born in 1951 into a Christian family in northern Lebanon, in the late 1970s Abdallah helped set up the Lebanese Armed Revolutionary Factions (LARF) – a small Marxist group dedicated to fighting Israel and its closest ally, the United States.
At the time Lebanon was embroiled in a civil war. In 1978 and again in 1982 Israel invaded south Lebanon to combat Palestinian fighters based there.
Abdallah's group decided to hit Israeli and US targets in Europe, and carried out five attacks in France. In 1982 its members shot and killed US diplomat Charles Ray in Strasbourg, and Israeli diplomat Yakov Barsimantov in Paris. In addition a car bomb blamed on LARF killed two French bomb-disposal experts.
Abdallah was arrested in Lyon in 1984. Tailed by French intelligence officers, he thought he was being followed by Israeli assassins and gave himself in at a police station. Initially he was charged only with having false passports and criminal association.
A short time later a French citizen was kidnapped in northern Lebanon, and the French secret service entered a negotiation via Algeria to engineer an exchange.
The French citizen was freed, but just before Abdallah was to be released police in Paris found a cache of weapons at his flat, including the gun used to kill the diplomats. This made his release impossible.
Two years later in the run up to his trial, Paris was hit by a spate of attacks which killed 13 people. These were blamed by politicians and the media on allies of Abdallah trying to pressurise France into freeing him. Later it was established that in fact they were the work of the Lebanese Shia group Hezbollah, under instructions from Iran.
In the trial, Abdallah denied involvement in the murders but defended their legitimacy. He was given a life sentence.
Of the more than 10 requests for release since 1999, only one came close to success. But in 2013 then-US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wrote to the French government expressing the hope that it could find a "way to contest the legality" of a court decision to free Abdallah.
Her message was later made public by WikiLeaks.
Interior Minister Manuel Valls then refused to sign the expulsion order on which Abdallah's release was contingent.
This year the appeal court decided that the length of Abdallah's detention was "disproportionate", and that he no longer posed a threat. It said again that his release must immediately be followed by expulsion from France.
"This is a victory for justice, but it is also a political scandal that he was not released before, thanks to the behaviour of the United States and successive French presidents," said his lawyer Jean-Louis Chalanset.
Among the people who campaigned for his release was the 2022 Nobel literature prize winner Annie Ernaux, who said he was a "victim of state justice of which France should be ashamed".
Yves Bonnet, the intelligence chief who tried to negotiate Abdallah's exchange in 1985 and is now a member of the far-right National Rally, said he was "treated worse than a serial killer" and that "the United States was obsessed with keeping him in jail".
According to a report in Le Monde newspaper, no Palestinian prisoner – even those condemned to life imprisonment in Israel – has served more than 40 years in jail. Abdallah served 41.

The UK government's ban on Palestine Action is a "disturbing" misuse of counter-terrorism legislation, the United Nations' human rights chief has warned.
Volker Turk urged the government to lift the ban on the group, calling it "disproportionate and unnecessary."
Earlier this month, Palestine Action was proscribed by the UK Government under the Terrorism Act 2000 after activists claimed responsibility for spraying two military aircraft with red paint causing an estimated £7m worth of damage.
The decision is currently being challenged in the High Court with a judgment due at the end of the month. The Home Office has been contacted for a comment.
The ban means that membership of, or support for, Palestine Action is now a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
More than 170 people have been arrested since the ban was introduced, under the Terrorism Act of 2000.
Turk, who has been the UN's high commissioner for human rights since 2022, said the ban "appears disproportionate and unnecessary".
"It limits the rights of many people involved with and supportive of Palestine Action who have not themselves engaged in any underlying criminal activity but rather exercised their rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association," Turk said.
"As such, it appears to constitute an impermissible restriction on those rights that is at odds with the UK's obligations under international human rights law."
Security Minister Dan Jarvis said that "protest in support of Palestinians, waving a Palestine flag or expressing views about the current, horrifying situation in Gaza is lawful.
"The proscription order is specific to the support of Palestine Action only, which has orchestrated a campaign of criminality on Britain's streets, including attacks on national security infrastructure."
Palestine Action has engaged in activities that have predominantly targeted arms companies since the start of the current war in Gaza.
Parliament approved plans to ban the group on 2 July after activists broke into RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire and spray painted two Voyager aircraft which the organisation said were used to provide support to the Israeli military.
A series of criminal prosecutions relating to incidents between 2022 and 2024 are currently before courts. Four people accused of the Brize Norton incident face trial more than a year from now.
Turk also criticised the UK's "broad" definition of terrorism, which covers "serious damage to property".
Under "international standards" terrorist acts "should be confined to criminal acts intended to cause death or serious injury or to the taking of hostages, for purpose of intimidating a population or to compel a government to take a certain action or not," Turk said.
"It misuses the gravity and impact of terrorism to expand it beyond those clear boundaries, to encompass further conduct that is already criminal under the law," he added.

King Charles opens new wing at Centre for Islamic Studies
By Conor Walsh
25th July 2025
His Majesty King Charles III visited the University of Oxford last week to open a new wing and education programme at the Centre for Islamic Studies, both of which have been named in his honour as recognition of his long-standing patronage.
The King’s visit marked the 40th anniversary of the centre, with His Majesty reflecting on its impressive growth from “a modest hut” to an “internationally renowned institution”.
During a short speech His Majesty said: “The centre’s ongoing commitment to objective scholarship and international cooperation, underpinned by principles of dialogue, deep understanding and mutual respect is more imperative than ever in today’s world.
“I need hardly say I am extremely heartened that the centre continues to play such a significant role in that globally critical endeavour.”
Senior members of the University accompanied the King during his visit, including the Chancellor, Lord William Hague, and Vice-Chancellor Irene Tracey.
Dr Farhan Nizami, Director of the Centre for Islamic Studies, told BBC News that the centre had the “ability to bring scholars from around the world in a safe space where they can exchange ideas”, adding: “I think the very presence of the centre is a statement of inter-faith”.
The Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies was established in 1985 and is concerned with the advanced study of Islam and the Muslim world. The institution is governed by a board of trustees, including representatives from the University.
The Royal family has long been a supporter of the centre, with the late Queen Elizabeth II granting the institution a Royal Charter in 2012. During his service as Prince of Wales, the King also delivered the centre’s inaugural lecture in the 1990s.

Birmingham mosque stages crash in brutal warning over issues on roads
Naomi DeSouza
25 Jul 2025
A major Birmingham mosque orchestrated a crash scene in the middle of Small Heath in a stark message to the community of the dangers of reckless driving.
The live-action mock crash scene unfolded on Friday afternoon in the Morrisons carpark in Small Heath, opposite Green Lane Masjid, in attempts to crack down on issues blighting the area, which include speeding, drivers taking nitrous oxide balloons and reckless parking.
Around 100 people gathered to watch the event on July 25, with Green Lane confirming that more than 4,000 people tuned in to the Friday sermon about reckless driving.
The exercise saw West Midlands Fire fighters attend the crash scene, which was set up using real cars.
The exercise then showed how 999 crews would rescue a real-life trapped driver, which mosque officials said was "poignant and necessary as Birmingham continues to see car collisions, fatalities and pedestrian victims far too often."
Two hatchback cars were involved, with firefighters cutting through a small Hyundai to retrieve a passenger.
Birmingham has seen a raft of road tragedies in the past 18 months, with campaigners declaring a road safety emergency in 2024.
Last week we reported how campaigners say the council needs to do better after failing to fulfil a set of urgent actions that were set out following a scrutiny inquiry. You can read more from the city's transport chief, here.
Semir Said, head of outreach at Green Lane Masjid said at the scene on Friday: "We must educate our family members and our children of the consequences of such actions, the consequences of driving recklessly, of speeding, of taking substances while behind the wheel. This is the result."
Mr Said went on: "Road safety is a topic we must never stop talking about. It's one thing to compromise your own life, but another to selfishly destroy innocent lives in accidents.
"At GLMCC, we are desperately urging people to drive responsibly and particularly to stop driving under intoxicants like nitrous oxide.
"We must also park considerately so wheelchair users and pushchairs are not forced into the road endangering themselves.
"We have a religious responsibility to protect lives.
"The prophet Muhammad specifically told us 'removing harm from the road is a charity', we therefore stress to all, do not be the harm in the road.
"If righteousness is removing harm, imagine the consequences of being the harm."

UK poll shows most Britons have negative view of Muslims amid rise of far right
25 July, 2025
A new poll has revealed that Muslims are the least favoured immigrants in Britain by religion, with the UK witnessing a rise in far right politics and Islamophobia.
The poll, commissioned by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, found that 41 percent of the British public believes that Muslim immigrants have a negative impact on the country, compared to seven percent to 15 percent having the same opinion about followers of other religions, including Christianity and Judaism.
On top of this, over half of respondents believe Islam is not compatible with British values, with just over a third believing the religion promotes violence against non-Muslims.
Almost half also believe Muslim women are pressured into wearing the Hijab.
"Whilst the term ‘immigrant’ is used, the real issue for most people is 'Islam'," Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the leader of the Ahmadiyya community, said in a statement.
Ahmad added that many British people are afraid that their societies are changing beyond comprehension, and they feel that their nation’s resources are being disproportionately utilised in favour of immigrants.
Despite the negative views, one positive finding the poll found was "a clear generational shift" in perceptions towards the religion, with almost half of the younger generation, 18–24-year-olds, viewing Islam as compatible with British values verses 14 percent of over-65s.
Only 14 percent of young people believe Islam encourages violence against non-Muslims compared to 40 percent of the older generation.
The survey comes as the UK marks almost a year since the far-right riots that swept Britain in July and August 2024, which left the Muslim community in fear for their safety.
The riots were initially sparked by a disinformation campaign against Muslims.
The UK has witnessed a record level rise in anti-Muslim rhetoric, with cases increasing by almost 50 percent than the previous year, according to Tell Mama.
This also comes as the controversial Reform UK party, which has been accused of harbouring Islamophobic and far-right views, made significant gains in the English local elections, winning mayoral and parliamentary posts in a surge of support.

German armed forces look to teens to close recruitment gap – media
25 Jul, 2025
The German Defense Ministry wants 40,000 new recruits a year by 2031, Der Tagesspiegel reported on Thursday, citing informed sources. Teenagers may be called up to serve if volunteers cannot fill the gap, the newspaper said.
Sources in the ministry told the outlet that the initial aim would be to boost the number of volunteers for the army reserves starting next year. If contract soldiers are not enough to fill the quota, Berlin would reintroduce mandatory conscription for 18-year-olds from 2028, defense officials said.
The ministry will present a draft bill on the changes to the cabinet in August, which will then move to the parliament for approval.
The project aims to boost volunteer numbers from 15,000 this year by 3,000-5,000 annually, offering pay rises, driver’s license subsidies, and bonuses as incentives, according to Der Tagesspiegel.
From 2027, all young men and female volunteers would complete military questionnaires assessing their interest in joining the German armed forces. Suitable candidates would undergo voluntary medical checks, the aim of which would be to provide a “situational overview” of their health suitability, broadcaster ZDF said.
Germany has repeatedly debated whether or not to return to conscription, which was suspended in 2011. Along with other EU countries, it moved to revamp its military readiness after the Ukraine conflict escalated in February 2022.
In March, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen floated a proposal to marshal €800 billion ($914 billion) in debt and tax incentives to re-arm the EU in the face of what she described as a “Russian threat.” Moscow has repeatedly dismissed such claims as “nonsense.”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has vowed to make the Bundeswehr the “strongest army” on the continent.
In neighboring France, President Emmanuel Macron has proposed reviving voluntary national service to increase the number of reservists from 40,000 to 100,000 within a decade, while ruling out the reinstatement of the draft.

D.C. Police Worried That Fear of Terrorism Could Inspire More Terrorism
7.25.2025
MATTHEW PETTI
The terrorist threat wasn't real, police determined. But the rumors about the terrorist threat could cause terrorism "from those seeking to 'counterattack,'" they warned. A homeland security bulletin, recently obtained by Reason, sheds new light on the panic and confusion that U.S. authorities dealt with in October 2023.
The bulletin demonstrates that national security is a bit like the movie Inception. There's always one more layer. But it's also an important acknowledgment, from within the government, that panic itself can be the enemy. While "abundance of caution" has been the motto of U.S. counterterrorism for over two decades, the bulletin acknowledges that being too credulous about terrorist threats can itself cause problems.
American media was falsely reporting that Hamas had threatened to attack American soil on October 13, 2023, a so-called "day of jihad." The rumor was based on muddled, secondhand coverage of an interview where former Hamas Chairman Khaled Meshaal called for protests in the countries bordering Israel, soon after Hamas' massive October 7 attacks on Israel. Officials across the United States scrambled to deal with the public's fears, often feeding right into them.
"We do not have any intelligence to suggest a threat to the District of Columbia associated with the misinterpretation of this address; however, we have observed online social media postings indicating that individuals may seek to violently 'counteract' these perceived attacks, further elevating the threat environment and potential for interpersonal clashes between opposing groups at First Amendment Protected events associated with the ongoing Israel–Hamas War," the D.C. Fusion Center wrote in an October 12 bulletin.
The bulletin added that there have been "threatening social media posts…focused on targeting members of the Palestinian or broader Islamic communities from those seeking to 'counterattack' the Day of Jihad."
Sadly, the Fusion Center's prediction came true elsewhere in the country. Wadea Al-Fayoume, a 4-year-old Palestinian-American boy in Illinois, was stabbed to death by his vigilante landlord, Joseph Czuba, who believed that he was fighting against the "day of jihad." Czuba was convicted of murder and hate crimes in May 2025.
Ironically, the panicked news coverage brought Meshaal's statement—which was addressed to Arab audiences and went mostly unnoticed in Arabic-language media—to an audience that would never have seen it otherwise. The D.C. Fusion Center warned that that "day of jihad" news might actually move Hamas supporters to attack supporters of Israel or Jewish institutions. Fortunately, that prediction did not come true.
Fusion centers are offices overseen by the Department of Homeland Security for sharing counterterrorism information between federal and local law enforcement agencies. As part of an investigation into the panic published last year, Reason sent Freedom of Information Act requests to fusion centers across the country. The D.C. Fusion Center finally responded to its request this week.
Although some fusion centers have historically contributed to spreading fear and panicked misinformation, other fusion centers became a level-headed voice in October 2023. Fusion centers in Idaho, North Dakota, and California reassured officials that there were no credible threats related to the "day of jihad." New Jersey's fusion center hosted a briefing by the FBI, reminding police to respect citizens' First Amendment right to protest.
The D.C. Fusion Center seemed most worried about the potential for "interpersonal clashes" at pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian protests. But rather than either an organized call for attacks or protest-related fights, the worst spillover of Israeli-Palestinian violence on American soil has come from lone wolf attacks, often by attackers motivated by a combination of vengeance and delusion.
In November 2023, Vermont man Jason Eaton allegedly shot and wounded three Palestinian Americans who were wearing keffiyehs and walking down the street. Eaton claims he was working for the CIA, and Eaton's lawyers claim he is mentally ill. In February 2025, Florida man Mordechai Brafman allegedly shot and wounded two men he thought were Palestinians, but turned out to be Israeli tourists. His lawyers also claim he was having a "severe mental health emergency."
In April 2025, Pennsylvania man Cody Allen Balmer allegedly tried to burn down the house of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro because of "what he wants to do to Palestinian people." Balmer denied having a mental illness in court, but his family tried to have him involuntarily hospitalized a few days before the incident.
In May 2025, Chicago man Elias Rodriguez allegedly shot and killed two Israeli embassy staff in what appeared to be a targeted assassination in Washington, D.C. He had a photo of Al-Fayoume in his apartment window. Finally, in June 2025, Egyptian immigrant Mohamed Sabry Soliman allegedly shouted "free Palestine" and threw a firebomb at a group of Colorado joggers raising awareness for Israeli hostages, killing one of them.
Whether and how those attacks could have been prevented is up for debate. The Trump administration, for example, blamed the last two attacks on "reckless and irresponsible reporting" about the war in Gaza. (The reporting later turned out to be true.) But one thing is clear: Telling the public to be afraid all the time has its own dangerous consequences.

ACLU sues city board over mosque permit
Jul. 26, 2025
By Thomas Gleaton
BARTLETT, Tenn. (WMC) - The American Civil Liberties Union has filed suit against the Bartlett Board of Mayor and Aldermen for denying a permit request to build a mosque.
According to the lawsuit, in 2023, the Bartlett Muslim Society purchased land at the corner of Broadway, Memphis-Arlington and Centralia Roads.
The goal was to build a mosque to meet the needs of its member families.
Several residents spoke out against the permit, citing traffic concerns at the intersection.
The lawsuit states that Bartlett’s Planning Commission asked for a traffic study, for which the society paid. That study found no potential negative traffic impact.
However, in February, the board unanimously denied the society’s request to move forward.
Commissioners said it wasn’t about building a mosque, but rather the needs of the land that was purchased.
I personally don’t have a problem with a mosque in Bartlett," said Bartlett Vice Mayor Jack Young. “I want to make that clear on the front end, however, I don’t care what experts say; [This intersection] is bad.”
“You know, I’m happy for you all being part of our community—that makes a community, diversity,“ said Bartlett Alderwoman Monique Williams. “I don’t care—mosque, church, grocery store—it’s really a bad spot, and I really wish someone would have consulted you.”
Now, the ACLU is suing the board, saying the denial is not about the traffic issue at all.
It claims some commissioners’ decisions were predetermined, and Christian churches in worse locations weren’t required to have traffic studies before they were approved.

Cult mum Lori Daybell called 'coward' as she is given two more life sentences
Max Matza
July 26, 2025
Lori Vallow Daybell, the doomsday cult follower who killed her two children, has been sentenced to two additional life sentences for plotting to kill her estranged husband and her niece's ex-husband.
At her sentencing hearing in Arizona on Friday, Daybell's family members described in court how she victimised them and their disgust.
"You are a manipulator, a parasite and a coward," she was told by Kay Woodcock, the grandmother of her murdered son.
Daybell had already been sentenced to life in a separate trial for killing her son Joshua "JJ" Vallow, 7, and daughter Tylee Ryan, 16. The latest sentences are for plotting to kill ex-husband Charles Vallow, and ex-nephew Brandon Boudreaux.
Her only-surviving son Colby Ryan was among those in court on Friday. He memorialised his father Charles Vallow, who "took care of our family, and he made sure we had a good life".
Speaking to her mother, he said it "must be a very sad life to smile your way through all the pain you've caused".
"Rather than being able to acknowledge the pain that she has caused, she would rather say that Charles, Tylee and JJ's deaths were a family tragedy and not her evil doing," he said.
"Quite frankly, I believe that Lori Vallow herself is the family tragedy."
Larry Woodcock, the grandfather of JJ, also lashed out, at times yelling at her.
"You murdered Charles, the best thing that's ever happened in your life, for your delusional, narcissistic ways," he said.
"I will never speak your name again, murderess. You are nothing."
Daybell was found to have conspired with her brother, who died of natural causes in 2019, to murder her ex-husband and cash in on his life insurance.
Officials say she also conspired to kill Brandon Boudreaux, who narrowly avoided being shot in the head outside his home.
During trial, she argued that her late brother killed her former husband in self-defense.
The so-called "Doomsday Mom" represented herself during trial, despite having no legal experience.
Chad Daybell, her current husband, is awaiting a death sentence in Idaho for the deaths of the two children, and his wife from the time when his affair began with Lori Daybell.
Chad Daybell is an author who has written several apocalyptic novels loosely based on Mormon religious teachings.
The murders were committed as part of the couple's bizarre belief that people in their lives had come to be possessed by evil spirits.
The sentencing on Friday comes at the end of her third and final trial.
The case has gripped the US, after the two children went missing, along with Daybell and her husband. She was later arrested in Hawaii and the children's bodies were found on a property belonging to her husband in Idaho.

Trump wants new nuclear talks with Russia
25 Jul, 2025
US President Donald Trump has hinted that he would resume negotiations to maintain the existing restrictions on nuclear weapons with Russia.
The president made his remarks as the New START treaty, which limits the number of warheads and the means of their delivery, is set to expire on February 5, 2026.
“That’s not an agreement you want expiring. We’re starting to work on that,” Trump told reporters outside the White House before a trip to Scotland on Friday, according to Reuters.
“When you take off nuclear restrictions, that’s a big problem,” Trump said.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier this year that “dialogue between Russia and the US on arms control is necessary, especially concerning strategic stability.” He stressed, however, that it would require “an appropriate level of trust,” which needs to come with the normalization of bilateral ties severed by the Biden administration in 2022.
The New START treaty was signed in 2010 by then-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his US counterpart at the time Barack Obama during a brief period of rapprochement known as the “reset.”
Relations later deteriorated to historic lows over allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election and the conflict in Ukraine.
During Trump’s first term in office, the US withdrew from the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty with Russia, which banned ground-launched missiles with ranges of 500–5,500 km, as well as the 1992 Open Skies Treaty, which allowed the countries to conduct surveillance flights over each other’s territory. Moscow followed suit and accused Washington of dismantling the global arms control system.

Tunisians Protest Against President Saied, Call Country An ‘Open-Air Prison’
July 26, 2025
TUNIS: Hundreds of Tunisian activists protested in the capital on Friday against President Kais Saied, denouncing his rule as an “authoritarian regime” that has turned the country into an “open-air prison”.
Under the slogan “The Republic is a large prison,” protesters marched along Habib Bourguiba Avenue. They demanded the release of jailed opposition leaders, journalists, and activists.
The protest marked the fourth anniversary of Saied’s power grab. In 2021, he dissolved the elected parliament and started ruling by decree, a move the opposition called a coup.
They chanted slogans such as “no fear, no terror ... streets belong to the people” and “The people want the fall of the regime”.
The protesters said Tunisia under Saied has descended into authoritarianism, with mass arrests and politically motivated trials silencing dissent.
“Our first aim is to battle against tyranny to restore the democracy and to demand the release of the political detainees,” Monia Ibrahim, wife of imprisoned politician Abdelhamid Jelassi, told Reuters.
In 2022, Saied dissolved the independent Supreme Judicial Council and sacked dozens of judges, a move the opposition said was aimed to cement one-man rule.
Saied said he does not interfere in the judiciary, but no one is above accountability, regardless of their name or position.
Most prominent opposition leaders are in prison, including Rached Ghannouchi, head of the Islamist Ennahda party, and Abir Moussi, leader of the Free Constitutional Party.
They are among dozens of politicians, lawyers, and journalists facing lengthy prison sentences under anti-terrorism and conspiracy laws.
Others have fled the country, seeking asylum in Western countries.
In 2023, Saied said the politicians were “traitors and terrorists” and that judges who would acquit them were their accomplices.
“Prisons are crowded with Saied’s opponents, activists, journalists,” said Saib Souab, son of Ahmed Souab, the imprisoned lawyer Ahmed Souab who is a critical voice of Saied.
“Tunisia has turned into an open-air prison. ... Even those not behind bars live in a state of temporary freedom, constantly at risk of arrest for any reason.,” he added.

Iran says it held ‘frank’ talks with European powers
July 25, 2025
ISTANBUL: Iranian diplomats said they held “frank and detailed” nuclear talks on Friday with counterparts from Germany, Britain and France, who have threatened to trigger sanctions if Tehran fails to agree a deal on uranium enrichment and cooperation with UN inspectors.
The meeting in Istanbul was the first since Israel launched an attack on Iran last month targeting key nuclear and military sites, sparking a 12-day war and leading Tehran to pull away from working with the UN watchdog.
Israel’s offensive — which killed top commanders, nuclear scientists and hundreds of others and in which residential areas and military sites were struck — also derailed US-Iran nuclear talks that began in April.
Separately, a Russian rocket sent an Iranian communications satellite into orbit on Friday, a launch that highlighted strong ties between the two countries.
The Soyuz rocket lifted off as scheduled from Vostochny launchpad in far eastern Russia, the country’s state-controlled Roscosmos corporation said.
It carried two Russian Ionosphere-M Earth observation satellites, along with Iran’s Nahid-2 satellite and 17 smaller Russian satellites, and put them into designated orbits.
The 110-kg Iranian satellite is supposed to circle the Earth on a 500 km orbit and has a service lifetime of two years.
In November, Russia launched a pair of Iranian satellites named Kowsar and Hodhod, the first launched on behalf of the country’s private sector. It followed two previous Russian launches of Iranian satellites in 2022 and 2024.
Russia, which signed a “strategic partnership” treaty with Iran in January, strongly condemned the Israeli and US strikes on Iran last month.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that Moscow could help negotiate a settlement that could allow Tehran to pursue a peaceful atomic program while assuaging Israeli security concerns.
At the same time, Putin has emphasized that Tehran hasn’t asked Moscow for military assistance and noted that the partnership treaty doesn’t envision such aid.

British surgeon alleges ‘target practice’ shootings of Gazans by Israeli forces
July 25, 2025
LONDON: A British surgeon who recently returned from Gaza has claimed Israeli soldiers are shooting civilians at aid distribution points “almost like a game of target practice,” allegations the Israeli military have strongly denied.
Dr. Nick Maynard, a veteran of humanitarian missions in Gaza over the past 15 years, spent four weeks working at Nasser Hospital in the south of the Strip.
He told Sky News that the population is suffering from “profound malnutrition” and described the medical crisis facing patients and healthcare workers.
Speaking to The World with Yalda Hakim on Sky News, Maynard said: “I met several doctors who had cartons of formula feed in their luggage — and they were all confiscated by the Israeli border guards. Nothing else got confiscated, just the formula feed.
“There were four premature babies who died during the first two weeks when I was in Nasser Hospital — and there will be many, many more deaths unless the Israelis allow proper food to get in there.”
Maynard, who has now visited Gaza three times since the war began, said the paediatric unit is relying on sugar water to feed children due to a lack of baby formula.
“They’ve got a small amount of formula feed for very small babies, but not enough,” he said.
The effects of the crisis have also been severe on his colleagues.
“I saw people I’d known for years and I didn’t recognise some of them,” he said.
“Two colleagues had lost 20kg and 30kg respectively. They were shells, they’re all hungry.
“They’re going to work every day, then going home to their tents where they have no food.”
In the most serious allegation, Maynard claimed civilians were being shot by Israeli forces while they were collecting food at aid points.
“Israeli soldiers are shooting civilians at aid points almost like a game of target practice,” he said.
Israel’s military “categorically rejects the claims of intentional harm to civilians, particularly in the manner described. For the sake of clarity, the army’s binding orders prohibit forces operating in the area from intentionally firing at civilians,” it said.
“We are aware of reports of casualties among those who arrived at the aid distribution sites. These incidents are under examination by the relevant (military) authorities. Any allegation of a violation of the law or regulations will be thoroughly investigated, including taking appropriate action if necessary.”
The military said it was “working to facilitate and ease the distribution of humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation at the designated distribution centres, as well as through other international actors. These efforts are being conducted under difficult and complex operational conditions.”
Maynard claimed to have operated on boys as young as 11 who had been shot while collecting food at distribution sites run by the US and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.
“They had gone to get food for their starving families and they were shot,” he said. “I operated on one 12-year-old boy who died on the operating table because his injuries were so severe.”
He also alleged a disturbing pattern in the injuries observed during his time at the hospital.
“What was even more distressing was the pattern of injuries that we saw, the clustering of injuries to particular body parts on certain days,” he said.
“One day they’d be coming in predominately with gunshot wounds to the head or the neck, another day to the chest, another day to the abdomen.
“Twelve days ago, four young teenage boys came in, all of whom had been shot in the testicles and deliberately so. This is not coincidental.
“The clustering was far too obvious to be coincidental, and it seemed to us like this was almost like a game of target practice. I would never have believed this possible unless I'd witnessed this with my own eyes.”

UK, French and German leaders press Israel over Gaza aid after Macron backs Palestinian state
July 25, 2025
LONDON: The leaders of Britain, France and Germany demanded Israel allow unrestricted aid into Gaza to end a “humanitarian catastrophe,” after French President Emmanuel Macron announced that his country will become the first major Western power to recognize a Palestinian state.
The joint statement, issued after a call between Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, called for an immediate ceasefire and said that “withholding essential humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is unacceptable,” though it broke no new diplomatic ground.
The leaders said they “stand ready to take further action to support an immediate ceasefire and a political process that leads to lasting security and peace for Israelis, Palestinians and the entire region,” but did not say what that action might be.
France’s move exposes European divisions
Macron’s surprise announcement exposed differences among the European allies, known as the E3, over how to ease the worsening humanitarian crisis and end the Israel-Hamas war.
All three support a Palestinian state in principle, but Germany said it has no immediate plans to follow France’s step, which Macron plans to formalize at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
Britain has not followed suit either, but Starmer is under mounting pressure to formally recognize Palestinian statehood, both from opposition lawmakers and from members of his own Labour Party government. Health Secretary Wes Streeting on Tuesday called for an announcement “while there’s still a state of Palestine left to recognize.”
On Friday, 221 of the 650 lawmakers in the House of Commons signed a letter urging Starmer to recognize a Palestinian state.
“Since 1980 we have backed a two-state solution. Such a recognition would give that position substance,” said the letter, signed by legislators from several government and opposition parties.
After the E3 call on Friday, Starmer condemned “the continued captivity of hostages, the starvation and denial of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people, the increasing violence from extremist settler groups, and Israel’s disproportionate military escalation in Gaza.”
He said that “recognition of a Palestinian state” must be one of the steps on a pathway to peace.
“I am unequivocal about that. But it must be part of a wider plan which ultimately results in a two-state solution and lasting security for Palestinians and Israelis,” he said.
More than 140 countries recognize a Palestinian state, including a dozen in Europe. But France is the first Group of Seven country and the largest European nation to take that step.
Israel and the United States both denounced France’s decision.
Britain has long supported the idea of an independent Palestinian state existing alongside Israel, but has said recognition should come as part of a negotiated two-state solution to the conflict.
Any such solution appears far off. There had been no substantive Israel-Palestinian negotiations for years even before the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people and sparked the current war.
Humanitarian crisis alarms Israel’s allies
The worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where hunger is spreading and children have starved to death, has caused alarm even among Israel’s closest allies.
Germany has traditionally been a particularly staunch ally of Israel in Europe, with relations rooted in the history of the Holocaust. It says recognizing a Palestinian state should be “one of the concluding steps” in negotiating a two-state solution and it “does not plan to recognize a Palestinian state in the short term.”
But Berlin, too, has sharpened its tone recently, describing the Israeli military’s actions in Gaza as unacceptable and pushing for greater humanitarian aid, but still appears to favor trying to influence Israeli officials by direct contact.
The German government said in a statement on Friday that it is in a “constant exchange” with the Israeli government and other partners on issues that include a ceasefire in Gaza and the need to drastically improve humanitarian aid. It said it is “prepared to increase the pressure” if there is no progress, but didn’t elaborate on how.
Britain has halted some arms sales to Israel, suspended free trade talks and sanctioned far-right government ministers and extremist settlers, but Starmer is under intense pressure to do more.
Also weighing on Starmer is his desire to maintain good relations with the US administration, which has strongly criticized France’s decision. The British leader is due to meet President Donald Trump in the next few days while the president is in Scotland visiting two golf courses he owns there.
Yossi Mekelberg, a Middle East expert at the international affairs think-tank Chatham House, said Macron’s decision to defer finalizing recognition until September “creates some space” for other countries to get on board.
“We know that the UK is close, but not there,” he said. “This might encourage Starmer, who we know is not one to rush such a decision. … This might create some momentum, some dynamic, for the UK”

Gaza civil defence says Israeli forces kill 28 people
July 26, 2025
GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories: Gaza’s civil defense agency said Israeli military operations killed at least 23 people on Friday across the Palestinian territory, with another five killed in an overnight air strike.
Civil defense spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that five people were killed in a strike on Gaza City that hit a school building sheltering Palestinians displaced by the war, now in its 22nd month.
Bassal said five others were killed when an Israeli strike hit a tent used by displaced Palestinians also in Gaza City, in the territory’s north.
The Israeli military said that strike was carried out late Thursday, targeting “a key terrorist in the Islamic Jihad terrorist organization,” a militant group that has fought alongside Hamas in Gaza.
According to the civil defense agency, more than a dozen other Palestinians were killed in several strikes in Gaza’s north, center and south on Friday.
The toll includes at least eight people killed by Israeli fire while waiting to collect humanitarian aid, Bassal said.
Contacted by AFP, the Israeli military did not comment on the agency’s reports.
Media restrictions in Gaza and difficulties in accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify tolls and details provided by the civil defense agency and other parties.
Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza after a deadly attack by Palestinian militant group Hamas on October 7, 2023.
The Israeli campaign has killed 59,676 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.
Hamas’s October 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.

Paramilitary attacks kill 30 in Sudan village
July 25, 2025
PORT SUDAN: Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces killed at least 30 civilians in a two-day assault on a village in the country’s western region of Kordofan, a war monitor said Friday.
In recent months, as the war between the paramilitary troops and the regular army roared into its third year, Kordofan has emerged as a key battlefront, with the paramilitaries seeking to consolidate their control in the west after losing the capital Khartoum.
The Emergency Lawyers, a group that has documented atrocities throughout the war, said paramilitary fighters attacked the village of Brima Rasheed on Wednesday and Thursday, killing three civilians in the first raid and 27 others the following day.
It added in a statement that the dead included women and children.
The Emergency Lawyers said the paramilitary troops’ “indiscriminate killing” of civilians constituted “a serious violation” of international law.
Casualty figures are nearly impossible to independently verify, with most health facilities shut down and large swaths of Sudan inaccessible to journalists.
The monitor said sporadic clashes were also reported between paramilitary fighters and armed civilians in Brima Rasheed village, near the RSF-held city of En Nahud in West Kordofan state — a key transit point once used by the army to send reinforcements further west.
The Emergency Lawyers said that in recent days violence has spread across En Nahud, with reports of dozens of civilians killed and residential areas attacked.
The group added that the RSF also stormed major medical facilities in the city, expelling patients and using hospitals to treat wounded paramilitary fighters.
Those who resisted were beaten or detained, the Emergency Lawyers said.
Meanwhile, the UN said Friday that more than 1.3 million people who fled the fighting in Sudan have headed home, pleading for greater international aid to help returnees rebuild shattered lives.
Over a million internally displaced people have returned to their homes in recent months, UN agencies said.
A further 320,000 refugees have crossed back into Sudan this year, mainly from neighboring Egypt and South Sudan.
While fighting has subsided in the “pockets of relative safety” to where people are beginning to return, the situation remains highly precarious, the UN said.
In a joint statement, the UN’s IOM migration agency, UNHCR refugee agency and UNDP development agency called for an urgent increase in financial support to fund the recovery as people begin to return.
It said humanitarian operations were “massively underfunded.”
Sudan has 10 million IDPs, including 7.7 million forced from their homes by the current conflict, they said.
Over 4 million have sought refuge in neighboring countries.
Sudan is “the largest humanitarian catastrophe facing our world and also the least remembered,” the IOM’s regional director Othman Belbeisi, speaking from Port Sudan, told a media briefing in Geneva.
He said most of the returns (71 percent) had been to Al-Jazira state, while 8 percent had been to Khartoum.
Other returnees were mostly heading for Sennar state. Both Al-Jazira and Sennar are located southeast of Khartoum.
With the army controlling Sudan’s center, north and east, and the RSF holding nearly all of the western Darfur region, Kordofan in the south has become the main battleground of the war in recent weeks.
“We expect 2.1 million to return to Khartoum by the end of this year but this will depend on many factors, especially the security situation and the ability to restore services in a timely manner,” Belbeisi said.
He said the “vicious, horrifying civil war continues to take lives with impunity,” imploring the warring factions to put down their guns.
“The war has unleashed hell for millions and millions of ordinary people,” he said.
“Sudan is a living nightmare. The violence needs to stop.”

Aid groups sue Belgium to do more to stop Israel’s war in Gaza
July 25, 2025
BRUSSELS: Two Belgian aid groups launched a court case on Friday seeking to pressure the country to do more to help stop Israel’s war in Gaza, as the EU struggles to take action.
Belgium has been one of the most outspoken of the EU’s 27 countries in seeking to call out Israel over its devastating military operation in Gaza.
The EU’s top diplomat floated a raft of options after Israel was found to have breached a cooperation agreement with the EU on human rights grounds.
But the bloc’s member states are deeply divided over their approach to the conflict.
The two organizations behind the court case — the Belgian-Palestinian Association and National Coordination for Peace and Democracy — are pushing for Belgium to try to unilaterally halt the EU’s cooperation deal with Israel.
They are also demanding other steps, including the closure of the country’s airspace for any flights taking military equipment to Israel.
“Unless there is a sudden change, the European Union will not be able to suspend the association agreement with Israel,” Vincent Letellier, a lawyer representing the NGOs said — alluding to the bloc’s divisions.
“Countries must now be put under pressure by their voters and by the courts.”
A preliminary hearing in the case was held before a judge in Brussels on Friday and full proceedings were scheduled for Sept. 15.
International criticism of Israel is growing over the plight of the more than 2 million Palestinians in Gaza, where more than 100 aid and rights groups have warned that “mass starvation” is spreading.
Aid groups warned of surging numbers of malnourished children in the enclave as a trio of European powers held an “emergency call” Friday.
Doctors Without Borders said that a quarter of the young children and pregnant or breastfeeding mothers it had screened at its clinics last week were malnourished, a day after the UN said one in five children in Gaza City were suffering from malnutrition.
More than 100 aid and human rights groups warned this week that “mass starvation” was spreading in Gaza.
Israel has rejected accusations it is responsible for the deepening crisis, which the World Health Organization has called “man-made.”
Israel placed the Gaza Strip under an aid blockade in March, which it only partially eased two months later.

Syria, US and France agree to engage in efforts to support Syria’s transition
July 25, 2025
PARIS: Syria’s foreign minister held frank and productive talks with the United States and France at which they said on Friday they underlined the importance of ensuring the success of Syria’s political transition, unity and territorial integrity.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani, French Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barrot and US Special Envoy for Syria Thomas Barrack met in Paris, days after a ceasefire halted bloodshed in Syria’s southern province of Sweida.
Hundreds of people were reported killed in the clashes between Druze fighters, Sunni Bedouin tribes and government forces, and Israel carried out airstrikes to prevent what it said was mass killing of Druze.
In a joint statement, the Syrian, US and French officials said they had held “a very frank and productive meeting at a critical moment for Syria.”
Underlining the importance of engaging quickly to ensure the success Syria’s political transition following the fall of President Bashar Assad, they said they had agreed on the need to ensure Syria’s neighbors do not pose a threat and that Syria does not pose a threat to its neighbors.
They also agreed to support efforts to hold those responsible for violence accountable, the statement said.
Last week’s clashes underlined the challenges interim President Ahmed Al-Sharaa faces in stabilising Syria and maintaining centralized rule, despite warming ties with the US and his administration’s evolving security contacts with Israel.

Israel will let foreign countries drop aid into Gaza, as UN says third of Gazans ‘not eating for days’
July 25, 2025
DUBAI: Israel will allow foreign countries to parachute aid into Gaza starting on Friday, Israeli army radio quoted a military official as saying.
An Israeli military spokesperson did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for comment on the report.
The Gaza health ministry says more than 100 people have died from starvation in the Palestinian enclave since Israel cut off supplies to the territory in March.
Israel, which has been at war with the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza since October 2023, lifted that blockade in May but has restrictions in place that it says are needed to prevent aid from being diverted to militant groups.
In the first two weeks of July, the UN children’s agency UNICEF treated 5,000 children facing acute malnutrition in Gaza.
World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday Gaza was suffering man-made mass starvation caused by a blockade on aid into the enclave.
Almost a third of people in Gaza are “not eating for days,” the United Nations food aid agency told AFP on Friday, saying the crisis has reached “new and astonishing levels of desperation.”
The Rome-based World Food Programme had previously warned of a “critical risk of famine” in war-raged Gaza, over which international condemnation of Israel’s actions has been growing.
“Nearly one person in three is not eating for days. Malnutrition is surging with 90,000 women and children in urgent need of treatment,” a WFP statement said.
It said that 470,000 people are expected to face “catastrophic hunger” — the most critical category under the UN’s Integrated Food Security Phase classification — between May and September this year.
“Food aid is the only way for people to access any food as food prices are through the roof,” the WFP said.
“People are dying from lack of humanitarian assistance.”
Aid groups have warned of surging numbers of malnourished children in Gaza, which Israel placed under an aid blockade in March amid its war with Hamas.

Mahmoud Abbas praises Saudi support after Paris recognizes Palestinian statehood
July 26, 2025
RIYADH: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas thanked Saudi Arabia for its efforts which contributed to a historic French commitment to recognizing Palestine as a state.
The French President Emmanuel Macron made the announcement on Thursday.
“This solution is the only path that can address the legitimate aspirations of both the Israelis and the Palestinians. It must now be brought about as quickly as possible,” said Macron in a letter to Abbas.
“The prospect of a negotiated solution to the conflict in the Middle East seems increasingly distant. I cannot resign myself to that,” he said.
The Palestinian leader said the French move represented a victory for his people and urged other countries to take a similar stance to support a two-state solution to the decades long conflict.
The Kingdom has long been a backer of Palestinian statehood and has repeatedly condemned Israel’s treatment of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
More than 140 countries already recognize Palestine as a state. Macron has said France will formally declare the recognition at the UN General Assembly in September.

A Saudi’s journey through Indian culture wins hearts
July 25, 2025
RIYADH: A Saudi national who taught himself Hindi, starred in an Indian film and sang for the prime minister of India is now seen as a symbol of the cultural bridges emerging under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.
Hashim Abbas, an actor, first began learning Hindi in 2008 to improve communication with colleagues at an Indian IT company in the Kingdom.
“My love for Indian culture started while working at the company, but it didn’t stay just professional; it quickly became something much more personal and meaningful,” Abbas told Arab News.
As he built friendships with his Indian coworkers, Abbas became a cultural guide, showing them around Saudi cities and historic landmarks.
“I took them to different cities, cultural landmarks and historical places,” he said.
Over time, the shared experiences deepened his appreciation for Indian culture and inspired him to use music as a tool for connection.
“What truly inspired me were my Indian friends. They supported me with pure hearts — no judgment, no pressure,” he said. “Their encouragement made me feel like I belonged, and that gave me the confidence to sing in their beautiful language."
In April 2025, Abbas experienced a career-defining moment when he performed in front of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the leader’s official visit to the Kingdom in April 2025.
He sang the Indian patriotic song “Ae Watan,” which translates to “my homeland.”
Abbas said: “I consider myself very lucky. I had prepared the perfect song a year earlier — without knowing it would one day be used in front of Prime Minister Modi.
“I worked on it with passion, even adding a few Arabic lines to give it a cultural bridge between our two nations.”
In 2023, Abbas played a role in the Malayalam-language Indian film “Kondotty Pooram.”
He said: “This role showed that Saudi talent can be embraced at the highest levels, even in one of the most linguistically and artistically rich industries in India.”
Abbas’ story reflects a broader societal openness in Saudi Arabia, which is increasingly engaging with international communities through social, cultural and economic avenues.
India remains one of the Kingdom’s most important international partners, with strong relations spanning trade, education and culture.
According to the General Authority for Statistics, Indians represent the second-largest expatriate group in Saudi Arabia, with about 1.7 million residents contributing to sectors such as IT, education and healthcare.
Abbas’ relationship with India continued to grow during his visits to the country, particularly the southern state of Kerala. There, he met many people who had lived and worked in the Kingdom for decades.
“They always speak about their time in the Kingdom with warmth, gratitude and deep respect,” he said.
“What touches me most is that some of them even speak Arabic fluently, which reflects the strong connection and cultural bond between our two nations,” he added.
Abbas also highlighted how Indian perceptions of Saudi Arabia have evolved in recent years.
“Like any country, there used to be some stereotypes or misconceptions about Saudi Arabia. But now, many of those outdated views are fading — especially with how fast the Kingdom is progressing,” he said.
Thanks to Vision 2030, people are beginning to see the real Saudi Arabia: Modern, open, creative and full of life. I witness this shift in almost every conversation I have with Indian audiences ... it has completely reshaped how Saudi Arabia is perceived, both inside and outside the country.”

How Saudi Arabia is restoring its mangroves to fight climate change and boost tourism
July 25, 2025
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia is scaling up efforts to protect and expand its mangrove forests — hailed as “nature’s super ecosystems” — as part of a push to restore coastal habitats, combat climate change, and diversify the Kingdom’s tourism economy.
As the world marks the UN-designated International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem on July 26, new initiatives are building on earlier successes and harnessing cutting-edge technology, long-term planning, and private-sector collaboration.
“Mangrove forests are nature’s super ecosystems — capable of storing large amounts of carbon, preventing coastal erosion, supporting biodiversity, and mitigating floods,” said Raed Al-Basseet, group chief environment and sustainability officer at Red Sea Global.
Mangroves are salt-tolerant trees that grow in the intertidal zones of the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf. They stabilize coastlines, trap pollutants, act as carbon sinks, and provide vital breeding grounds for marine life.
Their dense roots protect against erosion and storm surges, while their branches shelter nesting birds, and marine species, such as shrimp, lay their eggs among their roots. Their leaves also serve as food for many other organisms.
Today, two species dominate Saudi Arabia’s mangrove zones: Rhizophora mucronata (Al-Qundil), found along the southern Red Sea coast, and Avicennia marina (Al-Qarm), which thrives on the Arabian Gulf and northern Red Sea shores.
According to Saudipedia, Saudi Arabia is home to approximately 400 million mangrove trees, spread across 60 million square meters, with an average density of over 86,000 trees per hectare.
As part of the Saudi Green Initiative, launched in 2021 to support the Kingdom’s sustainability goals and its net-zero emissions target by 2060, authorities have committed to planting more than 100 million mangrove trees by 2030.
That is a fraction of the SGI’s broader ambition to plant 10 billion trees across Saudi Arabia in the coming decades, but mangroves are a priority given their powerful role in carbon sequestration and biodiversity.
In 2023, a pilot mangrove restoration scheme began at Jeddah Islamic Port. Meanwhile, the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification is spearheading coastal planting projects in Jazan, Makkah, Tabuk, Madinah, Asir, and the Eastern Province, using nurseries and protective measures to ensure long-term survival.
As of the 2021 mangrove conservation day, officials had already planted more than 14.6 million mangrove trees, in partnership with private and public sector entities.
“The cultivation and transplantation of mangrove trees is a highly technical process that demands detailed planning and precision,” said Al-Basseet. “We carefully monitor tidal cycles to identify suitable low-tide periods and avoid windy conditions during planting.”
Saudi Arabia’s mangrove reforestation programs are increasingly powered by geographic information systems, drones, and satellite imagery, helping experts pinpoint ideal sites based on factors like sediment composition, salinity, and tidal movement.
To protect young trees, conservation teams install fencing and even deploy camera traps to deter animals, such as camels, from grazing on the saplings.
“Mangrove regeneration is integral to our broader environmental sustainability strategy,” said Tariq Al-Abassi, senior director of environmental programs at RSG. “By following a science-led approach, we ensure the long-term viability and regeneration of these ecosystems as a renewable natural asset.”
Mangroves are among the most carbon-dense forests on Earth, locking away CO2 in both biomass and soil. They also reduce ocean acidification by moderating localized pH levels, helping buffer marine life against the effects of climate change.
But their value is not only environmental. Mangroves support eco-tourism — such as kayaking, birdwatching, and nature tours — and provide ingredients used in cosmetics and dyes.
Increasingly, they are a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s vision to develop eco-friendly marine parks and coastal attractions that align with its economic diversification goals under Vision 2030.
With rising global awareness around the importance of coastal ecosystems, Saudi Arabia’s mangrove strategy positions the Kingdom not only as a regional conservation leader but as a global one.
As Al-Basseet put it: “They are among our most efficient natural tools for climate resilience.”

Madinah authority restores historic holy sites
July 25, 2025
RIYADH: Projects to preserve and restore important religious and historic sites in Madinah have brought a growing number of visitors to the area.
The work by the Madinah Region Development Authority includes ongoing restoration of the Battle of the Trench site and surrounding areas, where followers of the Prophet Muhammad dug a deep trench to fortify themselves against attack in 627 C.E.
A place that holds deep religious and historical significance for Muslims, the redevelopment includes restoring several mosques and other significant sites.
The authority is also redeveloping the Miqat of Dhu Al-Hulaifah, where the Prophet Muhammed entered the ritual state of Ihram before performing the Umrah pilgrimage. The initiative is focused on expanding the mosque’s facilities and improving services.
Over the past year, several Madinah landmarks have been enhanced with modern amenities and new guide services using digital technologies. Other upgrades include the installation of pedestrian facilities around the city’s central area and near the Prophet’s Mosque, such as electric vehicle access and a pedestrian path to Quba Mosque, and landscaping and public amenities.
The Rua Al-Madinah Project is a major development featuring an extensive tunnel network and numerous luxury hotels which will contribute to the target of increasing the holy city’s hospitality capacity to 30 million visitors by 2030.
The Al-Matal Project, another new initiative, features integrated tourist and recreational facilities built into the mountainside of the Al-Jamawat neighborhood.
The schemes will enrich the Madinah visitor experience, a key objective of Saudi Vision 2030.

Constitutional monarchy not just symbolic, it anchors the nation, says Penang Governor
July 26, 2025
GEORGE TOWN, July 26 — Penang Governor Tun Ramli Ngah Talib today said that respect for the institution of the Constitutional Monarchy is a vital foundation in nation-building and ensuring the stability of the nation-state system.
He said the monarchy institution was not just a historical legacy, but part of the governance structure that guaranteed a balance between power, responsibility and the rights of the people.
“This principle has been enshrined in one of the five principles of Rukun Negara, which should be understood, appreciated and preserved with a full sense of responsibility.
“In this country, the monarchy institution is not only a symbol of sovereignty, but also serves as a guardian of the supremacy of the constitution, a preserver of traditional values and a unifier of the people in a noble spirit of patriotism,” he said in his address at the investiture of the state awards, medals and honours in conjunction with his 84th birthday celebration at Dewan Seri Pinang, here today.
Therefore, Tun Ramli also called on the people of Penang to always express this respect through a sincere attitude, understanding and appreciation because the institution of the state, which is founded on the principle of a Constitutional Monarchy, will remain intact as long as the people hold fast to the same foundation.
Meanwhile, Tun Ramli said the upcoming National Month should be a platform to strengthen the spirit of independence and foster a deep love for the country.
He said that apart from being a historical heritage, independence is also a shared responsibility of every citizen of the country to preserve peace, appreciate the blessings of freedom and defend the progress that has been achieved.
In his address, the Governor also congratulated the state government on its success in recording a gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 4.8 per cent last year, which brought the state’s GDP to RM121.5 billion.
“Indeed, the state government has proven that systematic, focused and progressive administration is one of the main keys to ensuring sustainable economic stability,” he said.
Earlier, the Governor’s birthday celebration began with a 17-gun salute, inspection of the parade and guard of honour, followed by the investiture of the state awards, medals and honours.
Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, who received the State Commander-in-Chief (DPPN), which carries the title of Datuk Seri, topped the list of 280 recipients.
This year, 150 individuals will receive the Order of Merit while 1,380 people will receive the medals and honours at the ceremony, which to be over four days starting today, and on July 28, 29 and 30. — Bernama

‘Don’t take it lightly’: Anwar urges caution over Thai-Cambodian border clashes
July 26, 2025
ALOR SETAR, July 26 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says the government is not taking lightly the ongoing conflict between Thailand and Cambodia and its impact on Malaysia.
Anwar said that although the situation in Malaysia remained stable and calm, the country must learn from the experiences of its neighbours.
“I believe, as of now, the leaders of both countries appear ready (to cease attacks), but we must remain vigilant as the Asean region is geopolitically very strategic.
“We in Malaysia do not take it lightly even though the situation in our country is stable and calm; we learn from the experiences of our neighbouring countries,” he said when met by reporters after attending a closed-door meeting with PKR leaders from Perlis, Kedah and Penang here yesterday.
He said the conflict should also be addressed through diplomatic efforts, and both leaders had, in principle, agreed to halt the fighting, although there appeared to be some violations at the border.
Anwar said he had contacted the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia and was optimistic that both countries would stop the attacks to allow a peace process to take place.
“They (the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia) have given very good cooperation… Both prime ministers told me, ‘Anwar, thank you very much, we accept your role and we want you to carry on’,” said Anwar.

The Prime Minister said he had also asked Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan to contact the foreign ministers of Thailand and Cambodia regarding the issue.
Yesterday, Bernama reported that Anwar welcomed the positive signals and willingness shown by Bangkok and Phnom Penh in considering a ceasefire to prevent further conflict at the border of the two countries.
Anwar was reported to have contacted Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai on Thursday afternoon to express Malaysia’s concern over the escalating tensions.
The media previously reported that Thai and Cambodian troops clashed on Thursday in a disputed border area, with both sides accusing each other of sparking the latest confrontation.
Tensions between the two Southeast Asian nations have risen since May 28 following a bloody incident in the Preah Vihear area that claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier.
The two countries have long been at odds over their 817-kilometre border, which has remained unresolved for decades, and the dispute continues to strain diplomatic relations. — Bernama

Anwar: MPs should debate like students — with facts, not insults
July 26, 2025
PUTRAJAYA, July 26 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on Members of Parliament (MPs) to foster a culture of respectful and civilised debate in the Dewan Rakyat, free from insults and profanity.
Expressing his admiration for the participants of the 2025 Prime Minister’s Cup Debate Finals, Anwar commended their eloquence, confidence, thoughtful use of facts, and measured arguments — qualities he said should be emulated by parliamentarians.
“I am very proud of the quality of the debate, and I couldn’t help but wonder - why shouldn’t Members of Parliament learn from this? If we wish to debate, we must first master knowledge, analyse it, process it, and present it effectively.
“These young participants demonstrated an impressive standard of debate, and I salute them. Debate is not merely about speaking well; it is about the ability to understand, analyse, and articulate ideas clearly. That is precisely what I believe our Members of Parliament should learn to emulate,” he said.
Anwar, who is also the minister of finance, also praised the current generation of students for their strong command of the Malay language and their ability to engage in discussions with depth, knowledge, and understanding.
The prime minister said that values such as manners and ethics must be integral to the national education system, as the vision of building a Madani Malaysia cannot rely solely on technological advancements like artificial intelligence (AI), digitalisation, and emerging technologies.
“When we talk about a Madani nation, it must be founded on values and ethics, as articulated by Sheikh Taha Jabir Al-Alwani in his work Adab al-Ikhtilaf,” he said.
Acknowledging the complexity of today’s challenges and the need for future generations to master new knowledge, Anwar stressed that such advancement must be grounded in tradition, human values, and ethical principles.
“We train our children not only to master new knowledge but also to uphold the values of faith, ethics, and local culture. Without this balance, we risk merely replicating the model of Western countries,” he said.
Meanwhile, the 50th edition of the debate saw Sekolah Menengah Agama Persekutuan Kajang crowned champion in the Malay language category, while Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah emerged victorious in the English category. — Bernama

Protesters gather, chant ‘Turun Anwar’ as rally kicks off in downtown KL
July 26, 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — Protesters have started to gather in the heart of Kuala Lumpur for the ‘Perhimpunan Turun Anwar’ rally, marshalled by PAS Youth.
At the Sogo supermarket, people began to gather as early as 10am and had swelled to a few hundred people by 11.45am.
They were seen predominantly clad in black, carrying Palestinian flags, and chanting “Turun Anwar” and “Turun Hari Ini”.
At Masjid Jamek, similar scenes were observed, although the group there was not as large as at Sogo.
Some participants also brought up the Sabah scandal, calling for the resignation of Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
Other areas in Kuala Lumpur also saw groups gathering to march to Dataran Merdeka at 2pm.
PAS youth leaders were seen coordinating the protestors by informing them to be safe and updating them on the rally schedule.
No untoward incidents have been reported so far.
The plan was for the procession to reach Dataran Merdeka, followed by speeches from PAS leaders such as Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
There is a heavy police presence at all hotspots, with guards seen stationed and access to Masjid Negara sealed.
Outside the Masjid Jamek LRT station, police could be seen directing rallygoers to stand by the side and to watch where they were walking so as not to be hit by vehicles.
Chants of “Hidup, Hidup! Hidup Rakyat!” and “Turun, Turun! Turun Anwar!” were continuously heard.
Individuals helping to coordinate the rally were also heard asking participants where they were from.
Chants of “Kedah”, “Johor”, and “Melaka” echoed in response.
The rallygoers are expected to march to Dataran Merdeka at 1pm.
Authorities have allowed the rally to proceed, following a recent Federal Court ruling that struck down mandatory notification requirements under the Peaceful Assembly Act.
Over 2,000 police officers have been deployed across the city, with acting KL police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad warning that any provocation or unlawful behaviour will be met with firm action.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has said the government welcomes criticism and peaceful assembly, but urged protesters to act responsibly.
Meanwhile, Chief Secretary to the Government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar has reminded civil servants that taking part in the rally could lead to disciplinary action.

OIC plays key role in engagement with Islamic Emirate, says UN
July 25, 2025
The United Nations says the religious standing of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) can serve as an effective tool for engaging with the Islamic Emirate and supporting human rights in Afghanistan.
Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, emphasized during a Security Council session that the moral and religious standing of the OIC can play a meaningful role in engaging with the Islamic Emirate and advancing human rights, particularly women’s rights.
According to Khiari, partnership with the OIC is essential for establishing sustainable peace, promoting inclusive governance, and ensuring respect for human rights in Afghanistan.
He emphasized that OIC is one of the key actors in the political dialogue process concerning Afghanistan’s future. These are the same talks the UN is pursuing through the Doha Process framework, where diplomatic pressure—facilitated through the OIC’s engagement—is expected to yield effective results.
The OIC has repeatedly defended Afghan women’s right to education, work, and social participation in international forums, and has called for respect for their fundamental rights in accordance with Islamic principles.
The organization also sought to serve as a diplomatic bridge between the IEA and the wider Islamic world, aiming to foster gradual policy changes related to women through dialogue and mutual understanding.
Previously, the head of the Muslim World League (MWL), during a visit to Kabul, held separate meetings with senior officials of IEA, including the Prime Minister. In those meetings, Dr. Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa stressed that Afghanistan must move forward in unity and cooperation with the international community, and that the country should play an active role in major Islamic summits.

Three Afghan Asylum Seekers Vanish Before Deportation Flight from Germany
July 26, 2025
By Fidel Rahmati
Three Afghan asylum seekers slated for deportation from Germany vanished just hours before their scheduled flight, Saxony’s Interior Minister Armin Schuster confirmed.
Speaking to MDR on Thursday, July 24, Schuster stated, “The three Afghan asylum seekers disappeared before deportation. They cannot be found—I assume they are hiding.”
The missing individuals were among 84 Afghans expected to be deported last Friday, alongside 81 others with criminal records who were successfully returned to Afghanistan.
This marks the second group deportation of Afghan nationals since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan, signaling Germany’s renewed enforcement of removals despite legal and logistical challenges.Traditional Afghan cuisine
Reports from the German newspaper Die Welt revealed that a court had previously ordered the release of the three Afghans from a special detention center in Saxony.
Lawyers for the missing individuals had filed fresh asylum applications just days before the scheduled flight, complicating efforts to hold them in custody.
Minister Schuster urged the federal government to accelerate deportation flights to Afghanistan, warning that delays create opportunities for absconding and undermine Germany’s migration enforcement.
The disappearance of the three Afghans highlights growing tensions around deportations, balancing legal protections for asylum seekers against the government’s determination to maintain border control and public security.

Misuse of AI a big challenge ahead of polls: CEC
July 26, 2025
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin today described artificial intelligence (AI) "a greater threat than weapons" in the upcoming national parliamentary elections.
Speaking to reporters this morning at the regional election office in Khulna, ahead of a views-exchange meeting on preparations for the 13th parliamentary election, the CEC warned of the dangers posed by the misuse of AI.
"With the misuse of AI, it is now possible to circulate content using my exact image and voice," he said.
"We are trying to address this issue. Even developed countries are facing serious challenges. AI can generate such a volume of misinformation and disinformation that in some cases, election campaigns have been completely disrupted."
He emphasised the critical role of journalists, especially those in mainstream media, in countering such threats and ensuring accurate information reaches the public.
The CEC further said that drives to suppress terrorism and recover illegal arms will continue ahead of the elections.
"We want a transparent election. No activities will take place in the dark of night. We want everything done in broad daylight to ensure transparency," he said.
"Our goal is to present the nation with a fair election. If we fail, questions will inevitably arise about the future of Bangladesh."
He added that one of the biggest challenges facing the Election Commission is restoring public trust in the voting process and ensuring voter turnout, particularly among women.
"We are also vigilant against any form of technology-driven interference that could influence the election," the CEC noted.
The meeting was attended by the additional regional election officer of Khulna Division, along with senior district and upazila election officials. The CEC participated in the event as the chief guest.

UK Defence Data Breach Puts 18,700 Afghans at Risk of Harm and Sparks Massive Compensation Claims
July 26, 2025
In February 2022, a serious mistake by a UK Ministry of Defence employee exposed the personal information of nearly 18,700 Afghan resettlement applicants.
The breach has triggered mounting legal action, with many Afghans now seeking compensation for the harm and danger caused by this disclosure.
Leigh Day, a leading law firm, has already taken on 70 cases and continues to receive new claims from affected Afghans every day.
Barings Law in Manchester, which represents over 1,000 Afghan clients, predicts that many payouts could reach “at least five figures.”
Compensation for individuals could run into thousands of pounds, particularly for those still in Afghanistan whose safety is most severely threatened by the leak.
The UK Ministry of Defence has vowed to fight the lawsuits and insists it will not offer compensation voluntarily without legal proceedings.
This leak did not just compromise data; it amplified fear, jeopardized lives, and revealed glaring gaps in safeguarding sensitive refugee information.Traditional Afghan cuisine
The unfolding legal battle is not only about financial restitution but also about government accountability and the protection of vulnerable people worldwide.

Islamabad Confirms Amir Khan Muttaqi to Visit Pakistan Soon
July 26, 2025
By Fidel Rahmati
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry has announced that Amir Khan Muttaqi, acting foreign minister, is expected to visit Islamabad in the near future, though no exact date has been set.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan told reporters that discussions between officials from both countries are underway to finalize the schedule for the high-level visit.
He emphasized that the trip is part of ongoing bilateral engagement aimed at addressing key issues in Afghanistan–Pakistan relations.
When asked about speculation that Pakistan might recognize the Taliban-led “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” during the visit, Khan said no formal decision had been made.
Diplomatic dialogue between the two neighbors has continued in recent months, despite occasional tensions over border security and political concerns.
Islamabad has not formally recognized the Taliban government but has maintained regular political, security, and economic contacts with Taliban authorities since their return to power.
The anticipated visit underscores efforts by both nations to manage sensitive issues through diplomacy and signals that cautious engagement remains the preferred path forward.

UN urges urgent global support as Sudan refugee crisis deepens
July 25, 2025
The scars of war are everywhere in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, the city hardest hit since fighting erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. On a recent visit to the capital, Mamadou Diane Balde, UNHCR’s Regional Director for East and the Horn of Africa, described the level of devastation as overwhelming. He said it clearly explains why Sudan is now facing the world’s worst displacement crisis.
“The level of destruction that I have just witnessed in Khartoum explains to you why we have over 4 million people who have been forced to flee this country and go into neighboring countries,” Balde said. “The refugees need support as long as they remain as refugees in these countries. They need cash. They need registration. They need access, and the host communities that are receiving them need support.”
More than 20,000 people have fled across Sudan’s western border into Chad, while millions remain displaced inside Sudan. The United Nations estimates that at least 150,000 people have been killed since the war began, although rights groups believe the true figure could be much higher.
Balde called on the international community to step up aid, not only for refugees, but also to help Sudan begin the process of recovery.
“The Sudanese people need our support to help them rebuild their country and restore services,” he said. “So that the millions who are out there and who are longing for returning are able to return.”

'Food colonialism': Nigeria divided over GMO crops
July 25, 2025
Nigeria's approval of genetically modified crops has sparked outrage online over concerns that food supply will be over-reliant on Western agritech companies.
Food containing GMOs has been available in Nigeria since 2019, yet the debate over the controversial agricultural technology reignited online this week after medical influencer, Chinonso Egemba, posted a video on Thursday boasting the benefits of GMOs.
The video, which has garnered over 5.9 million views on X, sparked outrage after photos reemerged of Egemba's 2023 meeting with U.S billionaire Bill Gates. Gates has invested heavily in GMO technology across Africa, including $2.8 billion in Nigerian health and food sectors.
Viewers expressed fears over the role of foreign actors in proliferating GMOs in Nigeria, with one commenter @Jenslaw claiming that "GMO is simply a 21st century slavery scheme to recolonise Africa by controlling African population through what they cultivate and eat".
The magnitude of the backslash prompted Nigeria's GMO regulator to respond on Thursday,
"GMOs are trending, and we hear your concerns! NBMA ensures all approved GMOs in Nigeria are safe for you & our ecosystem. Our strict regulations align with WHO & Codex standards", the National Biosafety Management Agency stated on Facebook.
GMOs as a remedy for Nigeria's hunger crisis
The debate over GMOs has intensified amid fears over growing food insecurity in Nigeria. On Wednesday, the UN World Food Program said that the country was facing "an unprecedented hunger crisis," with nearly 31 million people in Nigeria acutely in need of food.
Proponents have hailed GMOs as a solution to food insecurity amid concerns for global warming's impact on farm yields. GMO crops are genetically modified to possess beneficial traits such as tolerance against droughts or insect attacks
Fears over 'neo-colonial' practices
Yet, critics argue that the dominance of Western companies in the GMO space risks making Nigeria overly reliant on foreign actors for its food supply. Strong IP rights for genetically modified seeds mean that small farmers could risk lawsuits if they replant their GMO crops instead of purchasing new seeds from abroad each year.
"GMOs aggravate food insecurity and threaten food and seed sovereignty. They do so by holding farmers in debt cycles that reduce their ability to produce more food for consumption", the environmental organisation, Greenpeace stated, calling GMO technology 'neo-colonial'.
Fears of Western interference increased after a joint investigation published in September by Lighthouse Reports revealed that a U.S government-funded PR firm was targeting GMO-critical voices in Africa and Asia.
Beyond Nigeria
South Africa is leading the charge for GMOs in Africa with the most amount of approved GMO crops under cultivation as several other countries, including Kenya and Ghana has begun trials of the technology. Algeria, Madagascar, and Zimbabwe have banned GMO cultivation and imports citing biodiversity risks.
Since 2024, Nigeria has had two GMO crops - maize and cowpea - approved for sale with 33 more crops approved for trial.

ASUU Rejects Renaming of UNIMAID After Buhari, Threatens Legal Action
July 26, 2025
By Enioluwa Adeniyi
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Maiduguri chapter, has strongly opposed the Federal Government’s decision to rename the institution after the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, declaring the move “vehemently rejected and strongly condemned.”
Naija News reports that the union, under the leadership of Chairperson, Abubakar Mshelia and Assistant Secretary, Peter Teri, made its position known in a statement issued on Friday, following an emergency congress held on July 24, 2025.
According to the statement, the congress, which included ASUU members, representatives of the Student Union Government, and other key stakeholders, reached a unanimous decision calling for an “immediate and unconditional reversal” of the name change.
“Following extensive discussions, the congress unanimously resolved to vehemently reject and strongly condemn the decision to rename the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri,” the statement read.
The union described the decision as a “flagrant disregard for university autonomy, a disruption of cherished academic traditions, and a direct affront to the collective heritage and identity” of the university community.
ASUU-UNIMAID faulted the federal government for failing to consult widely before announcing the renaming of the university, which has existed for over 50 years.
The union labelled the renaming as “ill-conceived, arbitrary, and devoid of meaningful consultation” with the university community, alumni, stakeholders, and the general public.
“This decision represents a troubling disregard for due process and stakeholder engagement in governance,” the union stated.
ASUU-UNIMAID also disclosed that its executive committee has been mandated to pursue legal options in order to reverse the renaming decision.
It said it would explore all available legal avenues to protect the institution’s original identity and uphold the autonomy of Nigerian public universities.
The statement further urged other ASUU branches, zonal bodies, and the national leadership to resist any attempt by the National Assembly to formalise the name change through legislation.
Reaffirming its stance, the union emphasised that public universities must remain insulated from political influence and cautioned against any future attempts to rename institutions without broad-based consultation.
“The union demands that the autonomy and integrity of public universities must be upheld without political interference,” it added.

Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko DisCo) has announced that some parts of Lagos State will experience a 25-day blackout.
Naija News reports that Eko DisCo made this known in a notice to customers on Friday via its 𝕏 handle.
According to EKEDC, the blackout is scheduled to commence on July 28th and last until August 21st, 2025, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily.
The Disco explained that the outage is to enable the Transmission Company of Nigeria to carry out work on the Omotosho-Ikeja West 330 kV line.
The statement read, “EKEDC has announced a daily planned power outage from Monday, July 28th, to Thursday, August 21st 2025, due to essential maintenance work by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on the Omotosho-Ikeja West 330 kV line.
“The outage will occur between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day, affecting several parts of Lagos and other serviced areas. During this period, residents should expect intermittent electricity supply and load shedding across the Eko Disco network.”
In other news, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Tinubu over the failure to deliver on the campaign promise of providing Nigerians with uninterrupted electricity within four years.
Naija News reports that the interim spokesman of ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, in a statement on Saturday, questioned Tinubu on how long Nigerians would have to wait before the fulfilment of his campaign promise.
Abdullahi reminded Tinubu that it is past the halfway mark of his administration, and millions of Nigerians are still charging their phones at mobile charging kiosks and spending hundreds of thousands to fuel their generators.
