BJP
to recalibrate its 2024 strategy with takeaways from today’s verdict in five state elections
Dec
3, 2023
NEW
DELHI: The assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana and
Chhattisgarh may not exactly be semi-final for the 2024 contest, but the
outcome on Sunday will have important takeaways for BJP, Congress and other
contestants. BJP had lost state polls in the four states in 2018 but in the
2019 Lok Sabha elections went on to sweep all seats in Rajasthan and
Chhattisgarh, won 28 of 29 seats in Madhya Pradesh and, in a first, four seats
in Telangana where it had won just one assembly seat a few months earlier.
However,
BJP did not disregard the message delivered by the voters in the states and
came out with measures like reservations for “general” category and Kisan Samman
Nidhi, cash assistance for crores of farmers, which helped it in the 2019
contest.
The
party is certain to pay heed to the message of the current round to strengthen
its platform, which has Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity, the lure of
his vision of a “strong and prosperous” India, welfare schemes and Hindutva as
the planks.
The
exit polls are divided about Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, but party leaders
are confident of winning both the states and doing better than predictions in
Chhattisgarh even as the party pundits are not optimistic about winning more
than 8-10 seats in Telangana, where the saffron party continues to explore its
foothold.
Congress,
which is in power in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, and BJP, which is ruling
Madhya Pradesh, are locked in a straight fight in these three states, while K
Chandrashekhar Rao-led Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is hoping for a hat-trick
in Telangana.
BJP
is seeking to replicate the winning streak of Gujarat (where it has been in
government since 1998) in Madhya Pradesh with four-time CM Shivraj Singh
Chouhan hoping to form government again. The party is also keen to win back
Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh as it seeks to regain its hold in Hindi heartland
states ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
However,
in case of win, the immediate challenge for the saffron outfit will be to
decide the next chief ministers as the party has not projected any one as its
face in any of the four states.

Swing
state Muslim leaders vow to campaign against Biden
By
Colin Jackson
December
2, 2023
The
White House.
---------
Muslim
leaders from some key swing states met in Dearborn this weekend to coordinate
opposition to President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign.
The
group of activists says they’re frustrated with Biden’s support of Israel
during its retaliatory airstrikes on Gaza and Biden’s refusal to support a
lasting ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Fighting
between the two escalated on October 7 when Hamas launched a surprise attack on
Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking several hundred people hostage.
University
of Minnesota Professor Hassan Abdel Salam took part in this weekend’s “Abandon
Biden” conference put on by the National Conference of Swing State Muslim
Leaders. That includes those from North Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania,
Michigan, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
“We’re
looking into finding ways to build the mechanism of coordination between all
the swing states so that we’re constantly working together to ensure that
Muslim Americans will come out in all of these states and that Mr. Biden will
lose each and every one of them,” said Abdel Salam.
Abdel
Salam referenced the conference attendees in the room standing behind him,
arguing Biden could potentially lose 111 electoral votes if their strategy
succeeds in each swing state targeted.
During
the press conference, speaker after speaker repeated that it was too late for
Biden to earn back the Muslim community’s vote through his refusal to call for
a lasting ceasefire.
Michigan-based
activist Samra’a Luqman was among them. She also criticized U.S. Secretary of
State Antony Blinken’s handling of the conflict.
“This
is also a message that no matter how many people you contact to deter us, no
matter what pathetic or sorry attempts that Blinken tries to make to mitigate
future bombings, no matter how you try to change the narrative or the subject,
we will never forget that you already crossed the line,” Luqman said.
But
the Muslim activists in Dearborn made the case that Biden had the power to
influence Israel’s handling of the situation and bring peace to the area.
“Families
and children are being wiped out with our own tax dollars. The largest and most
sophisticated bombs are being used on the largest and the most densely
populated places in the world in Gaza,” Hussein said.
Hussein
clarified that campaigning against Biden doesn’t mean community support for
former President Donald Trump, the current Republican front-runner.
“We
don’t have two options. We have many options and we’re going to exercise that.
And we’re going to teach the rest of this country that you do not have to have
two options. You can have more than two options,” Hussein said.
The
Michigan Democratic Party did not immediately respond to a request for comment,
but has previously said it’s engaging with the Arab American community.

Deradicalisation
can’t tame terrorists
3rd
December 2023
AN
announcement on Tuesday by the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, that
160,000 Boko Haram terrorists and their families had surrendered raised more
questions on the Nigerian government’s response to terrorism and criminality.
News
of the “repentance” coincided with the brutal beheading of 11 loggers by the
Islamist insurgents among other recent atrocities, as well as the reluctance of
the government to prosecute terrorists and their financiers.
There
must be clarity in fighting criminality; while citizens must be protected, the
state has the responsibility to punish criminals.
As many
observers and terror victims have pointed out, while the government continues
to pamper terrorists and bandits in the guise of using “non-kinetic” means,
thousands of their victims are neglected, and the killers continue their
bloodletting and brigandage.
The
beheading on Monday of the 11 loggers in Bale, Damboa Local Government Area of
Borno State, came within two weeks after dozens of farmers and villagers were
similarlyslaughtered in other parts of the state. The unceasing rampage raises
doubts on the effectiveness of the government’s controversial release of
so-called“repentant terrorists” into society by the Federal Government.
The
scheme has been in place for several years, but has never proved effective
despite the optimistic official hype. Instead, progress in degrading the
insurgency has been achieved by stronger military action and assisted by the
civilian input, and in-fighting among the terrorists.
Boko
Haram has exploited the Nigerian state’s institutional weaknesses. Its
familiarity with the terrain in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, its home
territory, enables it to navigate around a demoralised and deficient security
presence to operate with impunity. The scale of its atrocities since 2009 is
horrendous and unrelenting, slowed down intermittently only by military
onslaught.
More
than two million people had been internally displaced, and over 2.5 million
displaced, some taking refuge in neighbouring countries. The Borno State
Government puts the number murdered at over 100,000 in 2019. According to the
2022 Global Terrorism Index, among African countries, Nigeria is the fourth most
terrorised country after Burkina Faso, Somalia, and Mali.
Strangely,
unlike in other countries, in Nigeria, trials of terror suspects have been very
few and convictions even fewer. The government recently reaffirmed its
long-standing policy not to “name and shame” suspected terrorism
financiers.Instead, it has been releasing insurgents who had committed grievous
atrocities against their compatriots.
In
2020, 601 insurgents were released after undergoing six months of
deradicalisation, rehabilitation, and reintegration. The authorities claimed
that the insurgents had denounced their membership of Boko Haram and the
Islamic State West Africa Province, confessed their deeds, and took an oath of
allegiance to Nigeria.
Though
the security forces have regained significant territories from the sect and
also succeeded in weakening the group, the release of ex-militants may reverse
the gains recorded in recent years. Some have been known to return to their
deviant ways, and others have been uncovered as moles.
The
deradicalisation of minor players should be pursued as a strategy, but hardened
terrorists and their financiers must be prosecuted. Blanket ‘amnesty’ without
trial is unlawful, unjust and indefensible. It simply rewards the killers and
deprives their victims and thesociety of justice and closure.
The
continued failure of the authorities to provide the required succour and
support for the victims of the insurgency worsens the travesty of the
ill-considered deradicalisation.
Nigeria
has to change its strategy in the war against insecurity and criminals. It is
paying dearly as virtually all parts of the country are afflicted. A United
Nations Special Rapporteur, after a fact-finding mission in 2019, described
Nigeria as a “pressure cooker of internal conflicts and generalised violence.”
That
is almost an understatement. None of its six geo-political regions is free of
criminality. In the North-East, the Boko Haram Islamist insurgency shows no
signs of waning. It has birthed many spin-offs, and planted cells in the
North-Central and North-West zones. Its fighters havestaged attacks and jail
breaks, kidnappings, and robberieson the fringes of the Federal Capital
Territory, including the Kuje Correctional Centre attack in 2022, and an ambush
of elite troops of the Nigerian Army Brigade of Guards.
Bandits,
said by researchers from the Uthman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto, to number
over 120,000 and still growing, have laid low the North-West and parts of the
North-Central region. Fulani herdsmen and gunmen are similarly carving a bloody
path through the North-Central states in genocidal attacks against locals.
Reprisals by farming communities have attracted even more ferocious marauding
by theFulani militants. Plateau, Benue, and parts of Taraba and Nasarawa states
are consequently killing fields.
In
the South-West, violent cult gangs, armed robbers, street gangs, kidnappers and
commercial transport union enforcers, and political thugs make the region
unsafe.
In
the South-South, vandalism of oil infrastructure, piracy, illegal oil
bunkering, kidnapping and gang warfare add to the region’s environmental
degradation woes. The South-East is troubled by general criminality and an
insurgent faction of a separatist movement seeking the establishment of a
Biafran nation, launching a brutal campaign of killings that has been met by an
equally heavy-handed response from the military.
Economic
activities have been constrained, with farming, commerce and transportation
most hit. This has impacted on food production and inflation went up to 27.3
percent in October. The poverty net is widening. Aid agencies have raised the
number of Nigerians faced with hunger from the 25 million projected by UNICEF in
January to 26.5 million.
Despite
this, the government rarely prosecutes the hundreds of terrorists, bandits and
kidnappers that it claims to arrest. There should be a renewed onslaught
against criminals and vigorous prosecution. Tinubu has to change the narrative.
The
promise by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, that the
trial of arrested terrorists will soon resume is the right step. It should be
pursued with vigour. The dubious deradicalisation should be dumped.

Following a two-month decline in militant activities, Pakistan experienced 34
pc increase in anti-state violence last month.
Data
unveiled by the Islamabad-based think tank Pakistan Institute for Conflict and
Security Studies (PICSS) reveals a total of 63 militant attacks during the
month, resulting in 83 fatalities, including that of 37 security forces
personnel and 33 civilians. Additionally, 89 individuals sustained injuries,
comprising 53 civilians and 36 security forces personnel.
Pakistani
security forces responded with precision, eliminating at least 59 militants,

injured persons during November.
According
to the PICSS database, the cumulative toll for the first eleven months of 2023
reflects 599 militant attacks, resulting in 897 fatalities and 1,241 injuries. This
signifies an 81pc escalation in militant attacks, an 86pc surge in resultant
deaths, and a 64pc rise in the number of injured compared to the corresponding
period in 2022.
Once
again, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) emerged as the most affected province, with
documenting 51 attacks, causing 54 fatalities and 81 injuries.
Within
KP, 20 attacks occurred in the merged districts (former FATA), resulting in 23
fatalities and 13 injuries, while mainland KP reported 31 attacks, leading to
31 fatalities and 68 injuries.
Balochistan
recorded nine attacks, resulting in 18 fatalities, including that of 15
security forces personnel and three civilians, with eight injuries being
reported, encompassing five civilians and three security forces personnel.
Sindh

‘Christians
are family’: Marawi Muslims reach out to devastated families after blast
DEC
3, 2023
These
people are family. The families of these young students entrusted them to us.
We cannot abandon them,' a peace advocate says in a phone interview with
Rappler
MANILA,
Philippines – Within two hours of the blast on Sunday, December 3, that killed
four people and wounded dozens at the Marawi State University main campus gym,
an alumnus posted a message on his Facebook page.
The
alumnus, a judge, offered to house any student or resident feeling unsecured
after the blast, either in the family’s boarding house just off campus or in
their residence at the town center.
Many
of those who shared looked back to the 2017 Marawi siege. They described how
Muslims and Christians worked together to alleviate the pain of families in the
Philippines’ Islamic City, and how Muslims went out of their way to save
trapped Christians from the Islamic State-linked Maute Group.
Rappler
got in touch with the 46-year-old alumnus and other peace advocates, some of
whom spoke on condition of anonymity. They all warned of premature assignment
of blame. They spoke around the same time President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. blamed
“foreign terrorists” for the attack.
“These
people are family. The families of these young students entrusted them to us.
We cannot abandon them,” the judge said, sobbing, in a telephone interview.
He
said another judge, a Christian, had called up to talk about how the community
could stand as one against terror, and show the country the gains of interfaith
solidarity.
A
top university official told him that students were safer staying put in
dormitories and boarding houses in campus. The alumnus then pivoted into
linking worried parents and their children studying at the school.
“They
remained even after the siege. They are ones who are first to stand up and
defend us against bigotry,” he added. “We just want to offer emotional security
at this difficult time, and any aid they might need.”
But
even the deaths of more than a thousand people and dispossession of nearly half
a million folks in the five-month siege fail to trump decades of hard-earned
interfaith solidarity in this southern Philippines lakeside city, say the peace
advocates.
Bangsamoro
Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) member of parliament Amir Mawallil
said the university was “considered a safe space by a diverse community.”
Even
way back in 2010, Mawallil told Rappler in an interview, “student Christian
groups were openly posting about their activities.”
Abdullah
Acmad, another MSU alumnus, peace advocate, and now government employee, told
Rappler. “All of us are in pain now. Muslims and Christians alike are
bleeding.”
“We
are friends with these people. They are our neighbors. We were all caught off
guard. What eases the pain is knowing that many are saying, this is not because
of Muslim-Christian hate,” he said.
Acmad
would know. He spent time as a youth leader working with the Catholic outreach,
Duyog Marawi, in helping youth recover from the trauma of the siege.
Some
of their members and trainees worked in Christian-Muslim teams to share
messages of care and empathy amid the challenges of recovery. In their
workshops and discussion groups, youth and their parents shared the rage and
pain following the destruction of homes and the anguish of a delays in their
return.
“Because
despite the many numbers of peace keeping forces in the campus, as we call
them, and the Armed Forces presence, how can this chaos still happen in broad
daylight without any hint?”
Samira
Gutoc of the Ranao Rescue Team and chair of Ako Bakwit, whose brother is a
local doctor, said the scenes at the hospital were “terrible.”
“We
discourage the spread of disinformation,” she said. “Do not discourage
Christian students from staying at MSU. There’s history of utmost protection
there, even during the siege. Even then, the students were protected.”
Aside
from condemning the attack, Gutoc urged for stronger collaboration and
partnerships between faiths through the Bishop-Ulama conference.
She
also reiterated her call during a November 30 conference that also included the
Department of Foreign Affairs to include more women in decision-making bodies
involved in conflict resolution.
“Amidst
this, our love for each other remains and our call for justice and
implementation of peace and order and security for MSU and all must be stronger
than before,” he said.
“We
owe it to the victims of the incidents, their families and the MSU
constituents. Most importantly, to the peace we all strive and work hard for in
the past, until the present and for the future, in shaa Allah.”

Islamic
Resistance launches drone attack on US base in Erbil, Iraq
2023-12-03
Shafaq
News / The "Islamic Resistance in Iraq", consisting of armed Shiite
factions, announced early Sunday that it had launched an attack using an
explosive-laden drone targeting a base for US forces at Erbil International
Airport in the Kurdistan Region (KRI).
This
marks the first armed operation in Iraq claimed by factions since the temporary
ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza ended, and hostilities resumed
between both sides.
A
statement attributed to the resistance today indicated that its fighters
targeted "the US occupation base at Erbil Airport with a drone, hitting
its target directly."
It
is noteworthy that armed Shiite factions have escalated their attacks on
military bases of the US-led Global Coalition forces in Iraq and Syria
following the events of October 7th in Palestine (Al-Aqsa Flood).

Nottingham
teacher banned after sharing derogatory Muslim posts
02-12-2023
Amrik
Nijran was working at Nottingham Academy when he published inappropriate
comments and images online, which were seen by pupils.
However,
the report found as Mr Nijran's actions lead to pupils being exposed to
"extreme material" - such as "serious violence and bestiality,
albeit it appeared that was not Mr Nijran's intention" - the panel was
satisfied it amounted to unacceptable professional conduct.
The
TRA heard Mr Nijran, who had "decades of experience", had been
employed at the academy, in Greenwood Road, as a science teacher since 2017.
In
November 2020, sixth form pupils told a member of staff there were
inappropriate posts on Mr Nijran's personal Twitter account.
Investigations
were then started by the school, local authority and police, but Mr Nijran
resigned in March 2021 and police took no further action.
The
TRA was told he posted images of violence and hangings, made or shared sexist
comments and published negative posts about Muslims and other countries.
Mr
Nijran, now 69, demonstrated and promoted "a lack of tolerance and respect
for the rights or beliefs of others which is contrary to Fundamental British
Values", the report found.
"The
general theme of the posts shared by Mr Nijran demonstrated and promoted a view
that was prejudicial particularly to those from Pakistan and of the Muslim
faith," the disciplinary panel heard.
Mr
Nijran said during the school's investigation that he thought he had been
hacked, but the panel found Mr Nijran was responsible for the posts.
The
author of the report Marc Cavey said: "I am particularly mindful of the
shocking nature of some of the materials shared and their discriminatory
nature, and the potential impact on the standing of the profession."
The
panel heard Mr Nijran had not acted in any discriminatory way in his classroom
practice and was well regarded by the pupils he taught, including a number of
pupils of the Muslim faith.
The
report concluded he should be prohibited from teaching indefinitely and should
not be allowed to teach in any school, sixth form college, relevant youth
accommodation or children's home in England.
"He
may apply for the prohibition order to be set aside, but not until 27 November
2025, two years from the date of this order at the earliest," it said.
A spokesperson
for the academy said they were "committed to upholding the highest
standards of conduct" and "dedicated to providing a safe and
inclusive learning environment for all".
"When
we became aware of the allegations, we immediately conducted a full investigation,
which continued after the teacher's resignation and upheld our robust
procedures, which included making the appropriate referrals to the Teacher
Regulation Agency and providing the necessary support to our school
community."

No
band, baja, baraat as affluent Muslims solemnise nikah in the holy city of
Medina
Dec
3, 2023
MUMBAI:
Last month, Aamir Merchant, his family and close friends flew to Medina, Saudi
Arabia. His fiancee Aafia Bakali's family joined Aamir and his group in the
holy city. It was not for the first time that most members of the two groups
were in Medina, home to Prophet Muhammad's tomb and the Masjid-e-Nabwi or the
Prophet's Mosque, one of Islam's two holiest shrines (the other is Haram Sharif
in Mecca). The visit became special because Aamir and Aafia solemnised their
nikah at the Prophet's Mosque. Later, Aamir hosted a modest walima or the
traditional post-wedding feast attended by guests from both the sides.
Aamir
and Aafia are among a growing number of affluent Muslims who shun desi band, baja,
baraat, and perform one of the sunnats or traditions of the Prophet-nikah-near
the Prophet's grave. The main purpose, confesses Aamir, is to seek the divine
blessings under the benevolent shadow of the shrine.
"Nikah
is an important sunnat of the holy Prophet and there cannot be a better place
for a Muslim to get married than at the Prophet's mosque," says
Dubai-based Aamir on phone.

CJI
hails dissent, says state must support weaker population
Dec
3, 2023
NEW
DELHI: Underscoring the importance of dissenters in society, who challenge and
question prevailing majoritarian views, the Chief Justice of India on Saturday
said dissent nourishes democracy and a society will fail and not progress if
dissent is suppressed.Speaking on 'Democracy, Debate and Dissent' at the
conclusion of the Justice Keshav Chandra Dhulia Memorial Essay Competition,
Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud said dissents, even those which are
unpopular and unacceptable, give us windows to the future and a servile and
subservient population weakens democracy.
The
CJI said the State must side with the weaker population which may be a
numerical or a social minority and they must have a say in the decision-making
process.
"Dissent
emerges from profound questions about the working of the society. Abolition of
slavery, annihilation of caste, emancipation of gender minorities, and
religious harmony were all once dissenting opinions. However, these dissents
hold the power to fundamentally restructure our society by sparking an
important conversation. These dissents emerge not from thin air but from a
democratic culture of fierce debates. Therefore, a society which does not
encourage its citizens to critically think, question the powers that be, and
engage in nonconformist democratic discourse will fail to progress because it
will fail to create dissenters," the CJI said.

Darul
Huda Islamic University comes out against Literature Festival in Kerala
03rd
December 2023
KOZHIKODE:
Darul Huda Islamic University, Chemmad, Malappuram, has distanced itself from
the Malabar Literature Festival, which is currently under way at the beach
here, saying that the fest is ‘against Islamic teachings and views of the
Samastha and Sunnath Jama’ath.’
In
a statement issued here on Saturday, Darul Huda Vice Chancellor Dr Bahaudeen

Arab

criticism from others in the communities, the latest sign that Democratic
efforts to soothe relations with pro-Palestinian groups since the outbreak of
the Israeli-Hamas war have largely been met with skepticism and anger.
Multiple
people with knowledge of the meeting between Biden and a slate of Arab and
Muslim American leaders described the meeting as fraught, with attendees
raising voices to the president, speaking through tears, and detailing the
personal impact the war between Hamas and Israel has had on their families. The
meeting included Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, Wa’el Alzayat, the

Muslim
American leaders from six battleground states on Saturday vowed to mobilize
their communities against President Joe Biden's reelection over his support of
Israel's war in Gaza, but they have yet to settle on an alternative 2024

The

"We

Nikki Haley slams Donald Trump: ‘He’s losing it’
Dec

Nikki
Haley's campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination is gaining
significant traction. There's a noticeable uptick in media attention, growing
interest from major donors, and a rising buzz about her potential to challenge
Donald Trump effectively.
Describing
her campaign as "scrappy," Indian-American Haley has successfully
garnered the backing of the Koch network, the nation's most extensive
conservative grassroots organization. As the week concludes, a substantial
number of activists supported by the Koch network are anticipated to start mobilizing
support for Haley, engaging with countless Republican primary voters right at
their doorsteps.
Haley,
the Republican presidential candidate and former governor of South Carolina,
recently addressed a surge in attacks from her GOP rivals, attributing it to
the growing momentum of her campaign. In an interview with Martha MacCallum on
Fox News Channel's "The Story," Haley discussed the increased
scrutiny from her competitors, including Florida governor Ron DeSantis and

By

Burkina
Faso and Niger have followed Mali in announcing they are to withdraw from an
international force known as the G5 that was set up to fight Islamists in the
Sahel region.
A
statement from the military-led governments of Burkina Faso and Niger was
critical of the G5 force for failing to make the Sahel region safer.
It
also suggested the anti-jihadist force undermined the two African nations'
desire for greater "independence and dignity" - and was serving
foreign interests instead. They almost certainly meant France.

Crown
for rebel beauty; Nicaragua charges pageant head with 'treason'
Dec
3, 2023
MANAGUA:
The director of Nicaragua's national beauty pageant and two family members were
accused of "treason" on Friday, two weeks after a Nicaraguan woman
seen as a symbol of opposition to the government was crowned Miss Universe.
A
police statement said Karen Celebertti, her husband and her son - all owners of
the Miss Nicaragua pageant - had actively participated "in the terrorist
actions of the failed coup attempt," a reference to the 2018 mass protests
against President Daniel Ortega.
Sheynnis
Palacios, 23, has been widely portrayed as a symbol of opposition to the
longtime president since she was crowned as the first Miss Universe from
Nicaragua last month. Photos showing her waving the Nicaraguan flag at
anti-government protests in 2018 have gone viral, and her victory brought
joyful crowds into Nicaragua's streets in the biggest public gatherings since
demonstrations were banned five years ago.
Police
said Celebertti, her son and husband "remained in communication with
exponents of treason to the homeland, preparing to use their franchises,
platforms... in a conspiracy to turn the contests into traps and political
ambushes, financed by foreign agents." Media reports not yet confirmed by
police said her husband and son had been detained.

Polls
transparency in question sans online access to lawmakers’ assets
Kalbe
Al
December
3, 2023
ISLAMABAD:
As the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is failing to digitise and upload
the statements of assets and liabilities filed by the legislators, it is
restricting transparency and access to knowledge even about the unrealistic
wealth statements filed by provincial and federal lawmakers.
The
ECP currently only provides the statements filed by the elected representatives
of the parliament and the provincial assemblies in a book form on payments, and
apart from a few sectors like the NGOs, law firms active in the political
arena, etc., only media persons procure these hefty copies. But this process
adds to the lack of transparency and access of ordinary citizens to check the
conflicting statements if any filed by the public representatives.
Experts
believe transparency in presenting their wealth is the only way forward to
allow women, members of non-Muslim communities, and even the trans-people to
enter the election race as these communities are not as rich as the traditional
political families.
Free
and Fair Election Network (Fafen) — an independent entity for open parliament,
good governance, and fair elections in Pakistan — has uploaded statements of
some legislators in a bid to add transparency to the system.

Two
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Killed in Reported Syria Strike by Israel
December
2, 2023
TWO
(IRGC) officers were killed in a reported Israeli air strike in Syria on
December 2. Israel acknowledges conducting hundreds of air strikes over the
past decade, but very rarely takes responsibility for specific attacks. As is
customary, Israel did not confirm conducting the predawn strike near Damascus,
in which Syria said several targets were hit. Hours later, Iranian state media
said the strike killed two IRGC officers. The Iranian report claimed that the
two had been on an “advisory mission” in Syria and appeared to be the first
Iranian fatalities in multi-front hostilities with Israel since the Gaza war
erupted on October 7.
an
has sought to distance itself from the Gaza conflagration it helped set alight,
as well as from the violence against Israel by its proxies in Lebanon, Iraq,
and Yemen. But given its entrenchment in Syria, it was only a matter of time
before its own personnel would pay the price of this unprecedented flare-up.
The Israelis, it is safe to assume, knew who they were hitting outside Damascus
and saw the value of eliminating the targets as far outweighing any risk of
further escalation.” — Mark Dubowitz, FDD CEO
“The
Israelis have a ten-year track record of striking Iranian assets in Syria. It
was part of a gray zone campaign. But the fighting in the gray zone has ended.
Israel is at war. Iranian assets across the Middle East are at risk. Iranian
military officers are among the targets of opportunity that we should expect to

Fresh

PAS
sec-gen calls Kemaman victory a referendum on PM Anwar’s leadership, claims
momentum now with Perikatan
By
Shathana Kasinathan
03
Dec 2023
KUALA
LUMPUR, Dec 3 — Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan today claimed the 37,000-vote
majority won by PAS in yesterday’s Kemaman parliamentary by-election to be a
referendum of the public’s disapproval of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar
Ibrahim’s leadership of the country.
Despite
it being a vote in an overwhelmingly Malay state controlled by his party, the
PAS secretary-general said the victory is an endorsement of the Islamist
party’s candidate who is also Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri
Mokhtar, and signals the surge in public support for the Perikatan Nasional
(PN) federal Opposition coalition.
“Ahmad
Samsuri’s victory with a greater majority of 37,220 votes representing the
support of 70 per cent of the voters not only proves the acceptance of his
position as Menteri Besar of Terengganu but also confirms the momentum of
rising support for PN in the series of by-elections held after the 15th General
Election, including in the Parliament of Kuala Terengganu and Pulai as well as
the by-election of Simpang Jeram and Pelangai before.
“It
is clear that the central government continues to fail to gain the support and
trust of the people even after one year in power,” he said in a statement
published today in PAS-owned newspaper Harakah Daily.

Annuar

Dec 2023
KUALA
LUMPUR, Dec 3 — Just a day after the Kemaman parliamentary by-election was won
by Perikatan Nasional (PN), former Umno warlord Tan Sri Annuar Musa claims a
dynamic swing in support among two voter groups for the federal Opposition
coalition.
Now
deputy elections director of PAS, Annuar said the Terengganu by-election result
showed an increase in support among ethnic Chinese and young voters even as he
marked that the Orang Asli continue to remain steadfast behind the federal
ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition.
“Concurrently,
the Malay vote strongly favours PAS at 72 per cent, compared to BN’s 28 per
cent. The youth demographic is firmly aligned with PAS, showing an increase to
77 per cent from last year’s 66 per cent at the 15th general election, while
support for BN among the youth has dipped from 34 per cent to 23 per cent,” he
said in a Facebook post today.
the
same tone, he raised questions about the Anwar government’s trajectory.
”Electricity tariffs have risen, support for Hamas has been muted, takbir
shouts no longer allowed, opposition MPs face allocation refusals, Sabah’s
allocation is limited, royalties to Opposition states delayed, LGBT
normalisation is noted, prima facie cases dropped, and the LCS case remains
silent while ‘bosku’ is neglected,” he said.

‘Three
Chaplains’: New documentary offers a peek into the triumphs and struggles of
Muslim
2023-12-03
Shafaq
News/ The woman refused to sell Captain Saleha Jabeen a hijab to don with her
military uniform. While many civilian Muslims tell Jabeen she makes them proud,
others are horrified by her decision to serve. “You’re gonna go kill Muslims,”
the store owner told her that day.
Major
Rafael Lantigua Jr. has experienced the flip side of that struggle. Angered by
an attack on U.S. troops in Iraq, a fellow service member once barked at
Lantigua: “Why can’t you call your people and tell them to stop?”
The
words stung. Just as Jabeen thought the woman saw her as a bad Muslim, Lantigua
felt the implication of the outburst directed at him was: You don’t belong.
(The service member later apologized).
In
the years since, Jabeen and Lantigua have become part of the small group of
Muslim military chaplains who tend to the souls and spirits of U.S. troops of
all faiths and no faith — their work highlighted in a new film that offers a
peek into their worlds. Among other duties, they give talks on suicide
prevention, provide counsel on relationships, and advise commanders on matters
of religion and morale. When the going gets tough, they offer comfort, hope and
companionship.

Paris
hammer attacker 'pledged allegiance to Islamic State' in chilling video
By
Ryan Fahey
3
DEC 2023
A
British mum is facing at least six years in jail along with her brother and six
others over an alleged holiday food poisoning scam.
Laura
Joyce could go to prison for the alleged scam which cost hotel groups in
Majorca, Spain around £9million. Hotel bosses are now demanding the
mum-of-three face six-and-a-half years behind bars for what they claim is the
running of an organised gang which hit three hotel chains. The 44-year-old was
allegedly in charge of using middlemen encouraging holidaymakers to fake
illnesses and claim compensation. Laura and brother Marc Cameron Grimstead were
accused in court of forming the "profit-motivated organised gang" and
are now facing trial alongside six others.
Those
six other Brits were named in court as Ryan Bridges, Simon Robert Flanagan,
Tegan Jewel Sumerlee, Susan Amanda Lyle, Nicola Marie Sanderson, and Peter Carl
Murphy. Inspectors investigating the case believe the hotels targeted by the
alleged group were rinsed of £9.5million between 2016 and 2017. Laura, who was
charged under the name Cameron, had been warned earlier this year of the
possibility of receiving a higher sentence should she be found guilty of being
the ringleader of the supposed gang. A seven-page document delivered to court
from the Majorca Hoteliers Federation outlined their requested sentences for
each member, The Sun reported.

Ukraine
warns of nuclear risks as Zelenskyy prepares to dig in
Dec
3, 2023
The
threat of a nuclear accident persists amid Russia’s invasion, now into its 22nd
month, the Ukrainian energy ministry said after a blackout at the
Kremlin-occupied Zaporizhzhia facility.
The
nuclear worries are running parallel to stepped-up Russian offensive efforts in
Ukraine’s east, including the unconfirmed capture of Mariinka in eastern
Donetsk - and as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy calls for extensive
fortification in key battleground areas and along Ukraine’s borders with Russia
and Belarus.
The
Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which was captured by Kremlin forces days
after Russia’s full-scale invasion, was completely cut off from electricity
overnight, the ministry said Saturday.
The
power network that connects Zaporizhzhia to Ukraine’s power grid was damaged,
and the facility used diesel generators to keep working until repairs were
made. It was the eighth blackout that the Zaporizhzhia NPP has faced since the
start of the war.

As
Afghan diplomats spar over embassy, India draws red lines
by
Shubhajit Roy
December
3, 2023
With
Afghanistan’s Consuls General in Mumbai and Hyderabad declaring they will keep
the Afghan embassy in New Delhi open and functional — its closure was announced
by Farid Mamundzay, the ousted government’s Ambassador to India, who called the
Consuls General representatives of the Taliban — the Indian government, it is
learnt, is looking at three broad indicators that do not, in any way, amount to
de facto recognition of the Taliban regime by India.
First,
the new leadership team will continue to hoist the Islamic Republic of
Afghanistan tricolour flag, and not the Taliban white flag with the Shahada
inscription in black in the centre.
Second,
the embassy will continue to use the name of the Islamic Republic of
Afghanistan and not the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the Taliban’s
nomenclature. These will be used as part of their letterheads in their official
communication with the Indian government, in the note verbale and other stationery.
And
third, new diplomats from the Taliban regime are not sent to be part of the
Afghan embassy in Delhi or the consulates in Mumbai and Hyderabad.

Bilal
Karimi is Taliban’s First Ambassador to China as Beijing Accepts Credentials
By:
Manoj Gupta
DECEMBER
02, 2023
The
credentials of Taliban government’s new ambassador to China, Bilal Karimi, have
been accepted by Beijing — the first time Afghanistan’s rulers have officially
sent an ambassador to another country since returning to power more than two
years ago. According to Afghan foreign ministry spokesperson, Karimi was
accepted as the official ambassador of the Islamic Emirate in China.
No
country recognizes the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan, but
some, including China, have embassies in Kabul. Many other diplomatic missions
were shuttered and their staff evacuated as Taliban fighters bore down on
Afghanistan’s capital in August 2021.
China
is of particular importance to the Taliban, who are courting foreign investment
and regional alliances amid their continued isolation on the international
stage because of their restrictions on Afghan women and girls.

52
yrs after Bangladesh Liberation War, Tripura begins survey on exchanged plots
By
Priyanka Deb Barman
Dec
03, 2023
The
Tripura government has started a survey to unearth the status of land plots
exchanged between the people of India and Bangladesh
After
52 years of 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War that forced 15 lakh refugees from
erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) to seek shelter in India, the Tripura
government started a survey to unearth the status of land plots exchanged
between the people of both the countries.
Thousands
of people had migrated after the partition between India and Pakistan in 1947
to get rid of the hostilities of the Pakistan forces. After the war was over,
many went back but many stayed back. Among them, most of the Hindus, settled
here permanently after exchanging land plots with Muslims in the state, who
later migrated to Bangladesh.

Now,
low-fare flights from N-E to Bangladesh, Thailand and Myanmar
by
Divya A
December
3, 2023
IN
A first, four new air routes connecting northeastern states with international
destinations have been approved under the Centre’s flagship regional air
connectivity scheme UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik). These will connect Assam to
Thailand and Bangladesh, Manipur to Myanmar and Tripura to Bangladesh.
To
be operational in a few weeks, airfares on these approved routes —
Guwahati-Bangkok, Guwahati-Dhaka, Imphal-Mandalay and Agartala-Chittagong —
under the UDAN scheme, will be subsidised. “These new routes have been in the
pipeline since the concerned states made a demand,” Anil Kumar Gupta, Executive
Director, Airports Authority of India (AAI) told The Indian Express, on the
sidelines of the recently-held 11th International Tourism Mart in Shillong.
Reasonable
airfares could boost tourism from neighbouring countries like Bangladesh,
Myanmar and Bhutan in the northeastern states, said officials in the Ministry
of Tourism, which organises such a meeting every year in one of the eight
northeastern states highlighting their tourism potential and rich biodiversity.
Four
more routes connecting the northeast to neighbouring countries are further
under consideration, Gupta said. International routes have to be cleared by the
ministries of Home Affairs and External Affairs too.
