Civil rights outfit moves Delhi HC, flags possible ‘flare-up’ on Eid al-Fitr

The Association for Protection of Civil Rights (ACPCR) on Wednesday moved the Delhi high court, seeking directions to the Delhi Police and the Centre to enhance security at the Eidgah in Uttam Nagar’s slum colony, as well as in and around other mosques in the area.
Members of the Muslim community have expressed concern over a possible communal flare-up on Eid al-Fitr following the murder of a 26-year-old man, Tarun Kumar, during Holi.
The court agreed to hear the matter after ACPCR’s counsel sought an urgent hearing. However, the petition was not assigned to any bench due to defects, and no hearing took place. It is yet to be listed, court sources said.
In its plea, ACPCR said that following the incident, multiple rallies and assemblies were held across Delhi, including in Uttam Nagar, where “highly provocative and inflammatory speeches” were allegedly made, inciting violence against members of the Muslim community.
The petition claimed that several speeches specifically targeted Eid al-Fitr and called for preventing Muslims in Uttam Nagar from celebrating the festival.
It added that despite submitting a detailed representation on March 15 to the police and administrative authorities, seeking preventive and remedial measures, no effective steps have been taken so far.
“It is submitted that the continuing inaction of the respondents has resulted in a breakdown of the rule of law and has caused ‘constitutional harm’ by violating the fundamental rights of the affected community under Articles 14, 19 and 21 of the Constitution, including the rights to equality, freedom, dignity and life. The situation is further aggravated by fears of disruption to the peaceful observance of Eid, both by vigilante groups and the police. There are credible apprehensions of further escalation of communal tensions and targeted violence, in light of ongoing calls for disruption and retaliation,” the petition stated.
The association has also sought directions for the registration of FIRs and investigation into hundreds of alleged hate speech videos circulating on social media in connection with the incident, under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and for appropriate legal action against those suspected of inciting communal violence.
The clash between two families began on March 4 when an 11-year-old girl threw a water balloon from her terrace, which hit a Muslim woman. The altercation escalated into a fight, leaving eight people injured. Tarun Kumar, 26, succumbed to his injuries the following day. An FIR was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Pakistan Missile Strikes Wound Six Civilians in Afghanistan’s Kunar, Reports Say
By Fidel Rahmati
March 19, 2026

Local officials in Kunar say six civilians were wounded in Pakistani missile strikes on the eastern Afghanistan province on Wednesday, as cross-border attacks continued to hit populated areas.
Ziaur Rahman Spin Ghar, head of information at the Taliban’s Department of Information and Culture in Kunar, said the wounded were injured in Asadabad, the provincial capital, and in Nari district later in the day. He said the victims had been taken to Kunar provincial hospital for treatment.
The Taliban official said Pakistan carried out 63 missile strikes on Nari district, 33 on Manogai, 13 on Sarkani, six on Shultan and six on Asadabad over the past 24 hours. There was no immediate comment from Pakistani officials on the claim.
Missile attacks on border areas of Kunar have continued since the latest fighting erupted between Pakistani forces and the Taliban. Residents in affected districts have repeatedly reported damage to homes and fear of further escalation.
Kunar, which lies along Afghanistan’s eastern border with Pakistan, has long been one of the most sensitive areas for cross-border tensions. The rugged province has frequently seen shelling, displacement and civilian harm during periods of friction between Kabul and Islamabad.
In recent weeks, clashes and air and missile strikes have deepened tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban authorities, with both sides accusing each other of fueling insecurity along the frontier. The violence has raised concerns about a broader deterioration in already fragile relations.
The latest strikes are likely to add to pressure on both sides to prevent further escalation, as civilians continue to bear the brunt of the cross-border conflict.
Meanwhile, Pakistan and the Taliban say they will temporarily halt military operations against each other ahead of Eid al-Fitr after mediation by Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar.

Arab and Islamic ministers urge Iran to halt attacks, warn future ties at stake
March 19, 2026

------------
RIYADH: Foreign ministers from Arab and Islamic countries on Wednesday called on Iran to immediately halt its attacks on regional states, warning that the future of relations with Tehran depends on its respect for sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs.
In a joint statement issued after a consultative ministerial meeting in Riyadh, the ministers stressed that continued Iranian actions — both direct and through allied groups — threaten regional security and undermine prospects for diplomacy.
“The future of relations with Iran depends on respecting the sovereignty of states and non-interference in their internal affairs,” the statement said, in a clear reference to Tehran’s support for proxy groups across the region.
The meeting brought together foreign ministers from Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Türkiye, and the United Arab Emirates.
The ministers strongly condemned what they described as deliberate Iranian attacks using ballistic missiles and drones targeting civilian infrastructure, including oil facilities, desalination plants, airports, residential buildings, and diplomatic premises across Gulf Cooperation Council countries and beyond.
They said such actions “cannot be justified under any pretext,” and affirmed the right of affected states to defend themselves in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
Calling for immediate de-escalation, the ministers urged Iran to adhere to international law, international humanitarian law, and the principles of good neighborliness as a first step toward restoring stability and advancing diplomatic solutions.
The statement also emphasized the need for Iran to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which calls for an immediate cessation of attacks and prohibits support, financing, or arming of affiliated militias in Arab countries.
This includes groups such as the Houthi movement in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon, which several regional governments accuse Iran of backing.
The ministers also warned against any threats to international shipping, urging Iran to refrain from actions that could disrupt navigation in the Strait of Hormuz or the Bab el-Mandeb — two of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints.
On Lebanon, the ministers reaffirmed support for the country’s sovereignty, stability, and territorial integrity, backing efforts by the government to ensure that all weapons remain under state control. They also condemned Israel’s military actions in the country and its broader regional posture.
The group pledged to maintain close coordination and consultation to monitor developments and formulate unified positions, including taking “necessary legitimate measures” to safeguard their security and sovereignty and to bring an end to what they described as Iranian aggression.

Missiles and drones target Saudi Arabia, injuring 4 in Riyadh
March 18, 2026

Saudi Arabia's air defenses have been successfully intercepting drones and missiles fired at the Kingdom since the conflict began. (Saudi MOD Screengrab)
--------------
RIYADH: Four people were injured in the Saudi capital on Wednesday during a day of missile and drone attacks against the Kingdom.
Debris from an intercepted ballistic missile fell on a residential area in Riyadh, injuring four Asian residents and causing limited damage, the Civil Defense said.
Saudi Arabia intercepted eight ballistic missiles fired toward Riyadh throughout the evening with shrapnel falling in different parts of the capital and near a refinery south of the city.
A Ministry of Defense spokesperson said debris from the interceptions fell in "scattered areas of the capital."
An earlier ministry statement at about 7.30pm said air defenses were dealing with a ballistic threat in Riyadh.
Several drones were also shot down through the the evening as they headed toward a gas facility in the Eastern Region.
The attack came after Saudi Arabia’s air defense systems intercepted waves of drones and ballistic missiles fired at the Kingdom throughout the day.
A drone was intercepted and destroyed as it approached the Diplomatic Quarter in Riyadh, the ministry said at around midday.
Earlier, a ballistic missile launched toward Al-Kharj Governorate was shot down with debris from the interception falling near Prince Sultan Air Base “without causing any damage,” a spokesman said.
Another two ballistic missiles launched towards the Eastern Province were intercepted and destroyed in the evening.
The ministry reported nine drones targeting the same region since midnight local time.
The attacks on Saudi Arabia came amid yet another day of Iranian attempts to strike Gulf countries.
In the UAE, the defense ministry said it ha shot down 13 ballistic missiles and 27 drones launched from Iran on Wednesday.
Loud blasts were heard over Dubai in the morning.
The Emirates also named the six civilian victims of Iran’s attacks since the conflict began on February 28.
They include Palestinian woman Alaa Mushtaha, who was killed in Abu Dhabi on Monday when a missile fell on her car. Her funeral was held on Tuesday evening, local media reported.
Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah on Wednesday expressed his “sincere condolences and deep sympathy to the families of the victims of Iran’s unprovoked terrorist attacks targeting the UAE.”
He condemned Iranian missile and drone attacks targeting critical civilian infrastructure, airports, residential areas, and civilian sites across the UAE.
Qatar and Kuwait also reported intercepting drone attacks on Wednesday.

Donald Trump says the United States will retaliate if Iran attacks Qatar again
March 19, 2026
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened to destroy Iran’s key South Pars gas field if there were further attacks against Qatar’s main gas plant.
Trump confirmed on his Truth Social platform that Israel had struck the South Pars field but said the United States “knew nothing” of the attack, which spurred Iran to launch an attack on Qatar’s Ras Laffan facility.
“NO MORE ATTACKS WILL BE MADE BY ISRAEL pertaining to this extremely important and valuable South Pars Field unless Iran unwisely decides to attack a very innocent, in this case, Qatar — In which instance the United States of America, with or without the help or consent of Israel, will massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before,” the US president wrote.

Terrorists Attacking Borno, Yobe Are Our Brothers, Sisters’ – Christopher Musa
March 18, 2026
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Olufemi Oluyede, has said that ending the Boko Haram insurgency requires active participation and cooperation from residents of Borno and Yobe states.
Naija News reports that Oluyede made the call on Wednesday in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, during his operational visit alongside the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu.
The visit followed a directive by President Bola Tinubu, who ordered the military chiefs to relocate to the North-East to take direct control of the worsening security situation.
The directive came in the wake of multiple explosions that rocked parts of Borno State, leaving several persons dead and others injured.
‘Terrorists Are Among You’
Addressing residents of the North-East, Oluyede stressed that the insurgency could not be defeated without local involvement, noting that many perpetrators are known within their communities.
“I want to put it clearly this afternoon that for us to end this act of terrorism, the people of Borno State and Yobe must take ownership of this problem,” he said.
“Bulk of people perpetrating this heinous act are from these states, they are our brothers, sisters, cousins and we know them.”
He cited a recent attack in Kukawa to buttress his point.
“For example, when Kukawa was attacked, and we were conducting cordon and search afterward, we realised that two of the people that came to attack Kukawa were those inside that village. That means they are accomplices,” he added.
The CDS emphasised that defeating insurgency requires collective resolve, urging communities to play an active role in identifying and exposing criminals.
“We must take ownership of this crisis. That is my message to the people of Yobe and Borno,” he insisted.
On the increasing sophistication of attacks, particularly the use of drones by insurgents, Oluyede said the military was adapting to the changing tactics.
“It’s something that is evolving, and we are responding with German drones and we are getting more of the drones,” he disclosed.
Naija News reports that decent weeks have seen a resurgence of attacks by Boko Haram fighters targeting both military formations and civilian communities in the North-East.
The development has heightened concerns over security in the region, prompting renewed military efforts and federal intervention aimed at curbing the insurgency.

Nine-month jail for man who filmed himself stepping on Quran
19 Mar 2026
ALOR GAJAH, March 13 — The Magistrate’s Court today sentenced a man to nine months’ imprisonment for stepping on the Quran and uploading the act online last month.
Magistrate Teoh Shu Yee handed down the sentence on Amir Abdul Malik, 41, after he pleaded guilty to the offence.
Amir was charged with desecrating Islam by recording and uploading a video of himself stepping on the Quran with the intent to insult the religion at Kampung Durian Daun, Masjid Tanah, on February 28 this year.
The charge, framed under Section 295 of the Penal Code, provides a maximum of two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
In delivering the judgment, Teoh said the act was serious as it touched on the sensitivities of Muslims and had the potential to disrupt societal harmony.
“Insulting any religion, whether Islam or otherwise, can cause far greater harm than physical injury as it affects dignity and rights protected under the Federal Constitution,” she said, adding that the offence was even more concerning as it was committed during Ramadan, a period meant for spiritual reflection and good deeds.
The court ordered the nine-month jail term to take effect from the date of arrest on March 15.
The prosecution was conducted by State Director of Prosecution Nahra Dollah, together with Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Mohd Abdullah Wan Radzlad, while the accused was represented by lawyer Ishak Kari. — Bernama

‘Mohammad’ Deepak moves court: FIR against me partisan, police failed to act against mob despite evidence
Aiswarya Raj
Mar 19, 2026
Seeking that a “partisan” FIR against him be quashed, Uttarakhand resident ‘Mohammad’ Deepak Kumar has moved the state High Court, challenging the case and requesting a departmental inquiry against police officials who failed to act against hate crimes.
The petition, filed by Kumar and his friend Vijay Rawat, comes after they were booked based on the complaint of a Kotdwar resident.
On January 26, Kumar stood up to a group of men who were harassing a 70-year-old Muslim shopkeeper, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, to drop the word “Baba” from his shop’s name. During the confrontation, when asked his name, he told the crowd it was Mohammad Deepak. A video of the confrontation went viral, thrusting Deepak into the limelight but also bringing unwanted attention. On January 31, several members of the Bajrang Dal gathered to confront Deepak, but were restrained by the police.
Kumar had lodged a complaint against individuals who assembled in front of his gym, allegedly hurled abuses and delivered hate speeches. However, the police filed an FIR based on the complaint of a police officer against unknown accused. Kumar has stated in his petition that the police failed to take action despite evidence such as videos and details of the accused.
The petition, filed on March 13, also states that the FIR against him, based on a local resident’s complaint, has been lodged in a partisan manner by the Additional Superintendent of Police, Kotdwar, to “harass and victimise the petitioners for their act of intervening in a hate-driven incident to protect an elderly Muslim shopkeeper from communal intimidation”.
The petitioners sought that directions be given to the respondents (the police) to take immediate and effective action against perpetrators of hate crimes and hate speeches. “A detailed complaint (was lodged) at police station Kotdwar, naming the perpetrators, providing their phone numbers, vehicle details, and video footage of the hate speeches and threats. However, (the ASP) registered a lame and ineffective FIR against unidentified persons, despite the availability of clear evidence and identifications. No arrests, investigation or action have been taken against the named perpetrators to date, allowing the hate crimes to go unpunished,” the petition said.
It further said that Kumar had approached the local police authorities with complaints regarding the hate speeches, protests, and threats, seeking registration of an FIR, but no action has been taken to date, and no FIR has been registered based on his complaint.
On the video where he is seen confronting the mob, Kumar said that the video was deliberately circulated by the Bajrang Dal on social media platforms to polarise society on communal lines, “portraying him falsely as a non-Hindu despite him being a practising Hindu by religion, solely because he identified himself as ‘Mohammed Deepak’ to promote harmony”.
The petition also accused the police of registering an FIR against him, “based on a distorted narrative ignoring the video evidence of the incidents on January 26 and 31, which clearly exonerates the petitioners and exposes the communal motives of the Bajrang Dal activists”. The action of the police is partisan, aimed at pressuring and harassing the petitioners for upholding constitutional values of fraternity and intervening in favour of an oppressed minority individual, it added.
Kumar’s writ said that his gym business has been severely affected, with patrons avoiding the premises, leading to its effective shutdown and substantial financial loss. “The petitioner has received widespread public support across the country, symbolising solidarity with his stand. This support has manifested in the form of voluntary monetary contributions deposited into the bank account. These transactions have been made without any direct or indirect solicitation by the petitioner. The local administration and bank authorities have been duly informed and intimated of these transactions to ensure transparency and compliance with all legal requirements,” he said.
The High Court on Tuesday sought details of the transactions and asked the police to furnish information on the cases registered against him. The matter is listed for Thursday.

Mirwaiz condemns killing of top Iran security official – ‘resilience reflects spirit of a true Muslim nation’
Naveed Iqbal
Mar 18, 2026
The chief cleric of Kashmir, Mirwaiz Muhammad Umar Farooq has strongly condemned the killing of Iran’s top security official, Ali Larijani, by Israel.
“The resilience of the people of Iran and their leadership reflects the spirit of a true Muslim nation — courageous, steadfast, and with resolute faith in Almighty Allah,” he said, adding that such people “deserve to lead.”
On Wednesday, Mirwaiz was restricted from leading prayers at a mosque in central Srinagar. He was also restricted from leaving his residence to lead prayers on the last Friday of Ramzan and the Shab-e-Qadr prayers at Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, over the past week.
Mirwaiz said that the “fearful rulers of this police state have, by force, once again kept him away from the House of God in the holy month of Ramzan, placing him under house arrest.”
He has also called out the “shrinking of space for religious practices.” Since 2019, Eid prayers have not been allowed at the Jamia Masjid and there are also apprehensions that they may not be allowed again on the approaching Eid-ul Fitr, Mirwaiz said.
Over the past seven years, during the month of Ramzan, while sometimes Friday prayers have been allowed, congregational prayers have not been allowed on Jumat-ul vida or the last Friday of Ramzan.

No restriction on religious prayers within private premises, reiterates HC
Mar 19, 2026
Prayagraj: The Allahabad high court has reiterated that there can be no embargo regarding prayers or religious function being conducted within the private premises of a person irrespective of their faith.
The court relied on the Maranatha Full Gospel Ministries ruling while deciding a petition filed by Sambhal resident Munazir Khan.
A division bench of Justice Atul Sreedharan and Justice Siddharth Nandan delivered the order on March 16 while disposing Khan's plea. He had alleged that the administration had capped the number of people allowed to offer prayers at 20 during Ramzan, even though a larger gathering was expected at his premises, which he described as a mosque.
The court, after going through the photographs of the structure, opined that it was not a mosque, as on date. However, it said the place has been used for the purpose of offering namaz earlier, and there shall be no obstruction offered to the devotees for prayers to be offered there.
Besides, the HC said the elucidation of Article 25 of the Constitution by this court is not to be construed as giving any special status to the adherents of Islam in India.
"Article 25 grants every religion an equal and immutable right to profess, practise and propagate its faith without any ‘ifs and buts', subject only to public order, morality and health," the court said. It added that actions or speech that disturb public order or pit one religious community against another would fall outside constitutional protection and attract criminal liability.
At one stage on Feb 27, the high court had asked the collector and police superintendent of Sambhal to resign or seek transfer if they were incompetent to enforce the rule of law, after the authorities cited "law and order" concerns to limit the number of worshipers at the mosque.
"The glory of this republic of 1.4 billion of the earth's humanity lies in her resilience and strength, arising from her historical, religious, cultural and linguistic diversity formalised by Article 25 of the Constitution," the court said.
It also directed the state to ensure that a copy of this order reaches UP DGP and additional chief secretary (home), for the purpose of circulation.
The same bench in its earlier order on Jan 27 in another case had said that no permission was required from the state to conduct a religious prayer meeting within one's own private premises, as such activity is protected under Article 25 of the Constitution of India.

Delhi Police ramps up Eid security in Dwarka amid Uttam Nagar clashes
Jignasa Sinha
Mar 19, 2026
Multilayered deployments, 100 picket points, police personnel on rooftops, and increased barricading are some of the measures planned by the Delhi Police ahead of Eid al-Fitr across the Dwarka district, and specifically in Uttam Nagar, where communal tensions have persisted for nearly two weeks following the killing of a 26-year-old man in clashes during Holi celebrations on March 4.
Special commissioner of police (law and order) Madhup Tiwari said the force is fully prepared to avert any law and order situation. “All arrangements are in place after detailed planning. We will ensure that no untoward incident takes place in the area,” he said. Despite assurances by police officers, several Muslims in Uttam Nagar said they continue to live in fear.
Bilal Rajput, a resident said, “Police have put up many barricades, but we feel there is a need for more. There’s fear in the area and many believe that right-wing organisations may breach these barricades and hurt us. We are hoping that the police take action against those who have issued threats.”
Jamil Ahmad, a resident of Hastal village, said, “Many Muslim tenants and daily wage workers have already left the area fearing violence. We hope nothing bad happens during our festival. Clashes between members of two communities occurred on March 4 after an 11-year-old girl threw a water balloon on Holi that hit a Muslim woman, triggering an altercation between two families. Uttam Nagar resident Tarun Kumar, 26, was grievously injured in the violence and succumbed to his injuries four days later.
Police have arrested 14 people and apprehended two minors from both communities in connection with the violence. Since then, tensions have continued to simmer, with threats being reported on social media and provocative speeches becoming frequent, locals said.
Deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka) Kushal Pal Singh said security has been significantly tightened across Dwarka district. According to the DCP, personnel from the Rapid Action Force (RAF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and local police will be deployed across the district to maintain law and order.
“More than 100 police pickets will be set up at strategic locations, while rooftop deployment will be carried out in identified sensitive pockets to ensure close monitoring,” he said.
Special attention will be given to religious places, particularly mosques, where strict vigil will be maintained to prevent any untoward incident. “We are ensuring robust security arrangements and continuous patrolling around religious sites,” Singh said.
Police have also intensified confidence-building measures, with flag marches already conducted in all sensitive areas. These marches will be carried out at least three times during the Eid period to reassure residents. “Mixed-population localities have been identified as sensitive zones and are under enhanced watch,” Singh said.
Police also took note of an “aakrosh rally (outrage march)” that took place at Ayyappa Park a few days ago without permission. Posters of the rally were seen along Najafgarh Road at several locations. Singh said they have since directed the removal of these posters.

Police complaint filed after call to boycott Muslims at film screening
By Megha Sood

MUMBAI: A special screening of the controversial movie The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond in Nalasopara has triggered a police complaint after the organisers allegedly administered an oath calling for a boycott of the Muslim community.
According to the complaint, filed by the Helping Hand Foundation, an NGO, the screening was organised on March 10 at Capital Mall in Nalasopara by Vishwa Hindu Mahasangh, Mumbai. It alleged that objectionable remarks were made targeting the Muslim community after the screening.
The complaint further stated that the attendees were administered an oath invoking Lord Ram, pledging to boycott members of the Muslim community and maintain no relationships with them. Religious slogans were also allegedly raised at the venue. Videos purportedly showing the incident have since circulated on social media.
Munaf Baloch, president of the Virar-based Helping Hand Foundation, submitted a complaint to the police commissioner on Wednesday, seeking the registration of an FIR against the organisers. Baloch learnt about the screening on Tuesday through the social media video.
“I was appalled by the video which showed the theater filled to capacity and an oath was being taken by Vishwa Hindu Mahasangh president Pradeep Mishra Vijay to boycott Muslims,” said Baloch.
“I then found out that Vijay had kept a free screening of the movie but It was obvious that the members of their organisation were in the theater as common people would not do such a thing.”
In his complaint, Baloch said, “This incident is a clear attempt to spread communal hatred, disturb public peace, and economically target a particular community, which may lead to serious law and order issues if not addressed immediately.” He urged the police to collect CCTV footage and other digital evidence from the theatre and take legal action against the organisers.
Police officers from Virar confirmed that they have received the complaint. “We are verifying the allegations and we will check the CCTV footage,” said a police officer. No FIR had been registered at the time of going to press.
The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond was released last month after facing intense backlash and a brief Kerala High Court stay. The movie is controversial due to its depiction of interfaith marriages, religious conversions, and the perceived negative portrayal of Kerala. Much like its 2023 predecessor, the sequel has faced accusations of being political propaganda, released weeks before the Kerala assembly elections.

NIA drone terror case triggers MHA alert on foreign nationals in Northeast states
Imran Ahmed Siddiqui
19.03.26
The Union home ministry has asked the Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur governments to keep a close eye on foreigners visiting the states following the arrest of six Ukrainian nationals and a US citizen who are accused of plotting terror activities in India using drones from Europe.
“Based on intelligence inputs, the ministry has asked the three states that share borders with Myanmar to monitor the movements of all foreigners visiting there. The Foreigners Regional Registration Office has also been directed to monitor their movements and take appropriate legal action as and when required,” said a security official with the ministry.
Foreigners visiting these states are required to apply for and obtain a Restricted Area Permit from the government. The permit includes details such as the place of entry, residence and period of stay.
Sources said central intelligence agencies had earlier sounded an alert about suspicious activities by foreign nationals visiting the Northeast. “The ministry is also planning to restrict the movements of foreigners in the three states,” a ministry official said.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing the case, said the seven accused had arrived in India last month on tourist visas and travelled to Mizoram without the mandatory Restricted Area Permit. Later, they crossed illegally into Myanmar and met ethnic armed groups and delivered multiple consignments of drones from Europe.
All of them are linked to insurgent and terrorist organisations operating inside India, have been charged under the anti-terror law and are being interrogated by the NIA. The agency on Wednesday carried out raids in Mizoram and Nagaland to trace other members of the gang.
The accused were allegedly involved in illegally transporting large consignments of drones from Europe to Myanmar through India for use by ethnic armed groups. These groups were also allegedly aiding banned Indian insurgent outfits by supplying weapons and other terror equipment and training.
An NIA official said investigators were carrying out forensic analyses of the seized mobile phones and digital evidence, and that the accused would be taken to multiple locations in the Northeast to map entry and exit routes, identify their associates, and trace funding sources.
The accused have been identified as US national Matthew Aaron Van Dyke, and Hurba Petro, Slyviak Taras, Ivan Sukmanovskyi, Stefankiv Marian, Honcharuk Maksim and Kaminskyi Viktor from Ukraine.
Three of the six Ukrainians were arrested at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, while the others were held at Lucknow airport on the night of March 13. The US national was picked up on the same night from Calcutta airport.
A US embassy spokesperson on Tuesday said they were “aware of the situation”, but could not comment on cases involving US citizens for privacy reasons. Ukraine has lodged an official protest with the external affairs ministry, demanding the immediate release of its citizens and access to them.

Expelled Trinamool MLA Humayun Kabir's AJUP fields non-Bengali Muslim against Mamata
Subhendu Maiti
18 Mar 2026
KOLKATA: Expelled Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir on Wednesday announced the first list of 15 candidates from his newly floated Am Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP). He declared that the AJUP would contest 182 of the 294 assembly constituencies in the forthcoming assembly elections in West Bengal.
Kabir, who was expelled by the Trinamool Congress for 'anti-party activities', will contest from two constituencies -- Rejinagar and Nawda in Murshidabad -- though he was a sitting MLA from Bharatpur in the same district.
Addressing a press conference, Kabir said, "We will nominate candidates in 182 seats. Today, we are announcing nominees for constituencies in Malda and Murshidabad districts. The final list of candidates will be announced on Sunday afternoon."
He also claimed that the AIMIM led by Asaduddin Owaisi, in coordination with his party, is likely to contest a few seats in Bengal.
After being expelled by the ruling party in the state, Kabir recently started construction of a mosque modelled on the Babri Masjid in the Beldanga area of Murshidabad district triggering sharp political reactions across the state.
He also said his party would also field a non-Bengali Muslim candidate Poonam Begam from south Kolkata’s Bhabanipur, the most high profile constituency in the state where the Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee and Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari are taking on each other.
Political observers felt that Kabir’s decision to field a non-Bengali Muslim candidate might have an impact on the Trinamool's Muslim vote bank in the constituency.
However, they said the electoral impact of the new party will largely depend on whether it succeeds in splitting minority votes, which have traditionally consolidated behind the TMC in recent elections.
The Muslim share of the population in Bhabanipur is 20 per cent as per the 2011 census.
The contest in Bhabanipur has become a prestige battle, not merely for a seat in the Assembly but for political supremacy in a state where the face-off between Mamata and Suvendu has come to symbolise the broader TMC-BJP confrontation.
Among the candidates announced by Kabir are Bapan Ghosh from Purbasthali Uttar in Purba Bardhaman, Yasin Haidar, a former son-in-law of Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, from Kandi, and Syed Ahmed Kabir from Beldanga.
In Malda district, the party has fielded Royal Islam from Ratua, Abdul Minaz Sheikh from Maltipur, Muskura Bibi from Baishnabnagar, Abu Shaid from Manikchak, and Nasimul Haque from Sujapur.
Other nominees include Syed Khubaib Amin from Bharatpur, Anupam Rohdagir from Behala East, Imtiaz Molla from Farakka, and Bijoy Sheikh from Hariharpara.

Humayun Kabir’s party unveils first list of 182 candidates, he will contest from two seats
Tanusree Bose
Mar 19, 2026
Former TMC leader Humayun Kabir’s newly floated Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) on Wednesday announced the first list of candidates for the Bengal Assembly elections. The party plans to field candidates in 182 seats.
The party has fielded a non-Bengali Muslim candidate against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the high-profile Bhabanipur constituency.
The full list will be released on Sunday, said Humayun.
Like BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, Humayun Kabir said that he will contest from two seats Rejinagar and Naoda but will not contest from Bharatpur this time.
Addressing a press conference, Humayun said: “We are fielding candidates in 182 seats. We have announced candidates for Malda and Murshidabad. The full list will be released on Sunday around 1 pm. We will contest a few seats along with All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM).”
Kabir said that he will support Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Indian Secular Front (ISF) MLA Naushad Siddiqui. He claimed that not fielding candidates would create problems and by fielding candidates and cutting into votes, he would end up helping Chowdhury and Siddiqui.
Reacting to the recent transfers of top officers in the state administration, he said, “ The Election Commission has taken the right decision. CEC Gyanesh Kumar has to ensure that the elections are conducted fairly. Those in the administration won’t have allowed free and fair elections. The Election Commission understood this, which is why it made the correct decision. Here, everyone has turned into party loyalists.”
The candidate list for AJUP :
Among the candidates announced by the party are Bapan Ghosh from Purbasthali North in Purba Bardhaman, Yasin Haidar, former son-in-law of Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, from Kandi, and Syed Ahmed Kabir from Beldanga.
Kabir will fight from two seats in Murshidabad district, Rejinagar and Naoda, departing from his earlier political base in Bharatpur, from where he had won as a TMC candidate in the previous election.
In Malda district, the party has fielded Royal Islam from Ratua, Abdul Minaj Sheikh from Malatipur, Muskura Bibi from Vaishnavnagar, Abu Shaid from Manikchak, and Nasimul Haque from Sujapur.
Syed Khubaib Amin Saheb will contest from Bharatpur, Anupam Rohadgir from Behala East, Imtiaz Molla from Farakka, and Bijoy Sheikh from Hariharpara.
For the high-profile Bhabanipur seat, Kabir said his party would field Poonam Begum, a non-Bengali Muslim candidate against Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee.
The constituency is expected to witness one of the fiercest battles of the election between Mamata and her protege-turned-rival Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP.
Kabir was suspended from the TMC in December 2025 after he announced the plan to build a Babri Masjid-style mosque in Murshidabad. Kabir, who began his political career with the Congress and rose to become an MLA from Rejinagar in 2011, joined the TMC a year later in 2012.
In 2015, he was expelled from Trinamool for six years for “anti-party activities”. He then contested as an independent candidate in 2016 elections to retain his Rejinagar seat from his predecessor Rabiul Chowdhury but lost. In between he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2018 and contested from Murshidabad seat during 2019 General Elections but lost to the TMC candidate. After completing six years of expulsion, he rejoined TMC in 2021 and won as MLA from Bharatpur seat.

Mirwaiz, Imran Ansari condemn Larijani’s killing
March 19, 2026
Kashmir chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and J&K Peoples Conference (JKPC) leader Imran Reza Ansari on Wednesday (March 18, 2026) condemned the killing of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council secretary Ali Larijani in an attack by Israel.
“I condemn the targeted killing of secretary Ali Larijani by the rogue state of Israel. The resilience of the people of Iran and their leadership reflects the spirit of a true Muslim nation — courageous, steadfast, and with resolute faith in Almighty Allah — adding that such people deserve to lead,” the Mirwaiz said.
Mr. Ansari, also a Shia cleric who heads the All J&K Shia Association (AJKSA), said, “With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we mourn the martyrdom of Larijani, His loss is not just Iran’s loss, but a wound felt across the entire Muslim world.”
He said the AJKSA prays for “patience to the families of the martyrs”. “Our prayers are also with the people of Lebanon, who continue to face attacks and suffering. Their grief and struggle are shared by every believer who stands for justice and dignity,” Mr. Ansari said.
He also condemned the “continued aggression and brutality of Israel-U.S.” “Such cowardly acts will never break the spirit of resistance, but only strengthen the resolve of those who stand against injustice,” he added.

'Most famous Islamic architecture': Mehdi Hasan calls out Laura Loomer over her Taj Mahal remarks
Mar 18, 2026
British journalist Mehdi Hasan criticised American far-right activist Laura Loomer on social media over her recent comments on the Taj Mahal, calling into question her understanding of Islamic architecture. On X, Hasan wrote, "The most famous Islamic architecture in the world! How can she be this dumb?"
Loomer is a MAGA bigwig who is known for frequently criticising Islam as an ideology. She had posted earlier on X: "I had a magnificent day at the Taj Mahal. It is the most incredible monument I have ever seen in my life. A monument of love built with perfect symmetry and detail. India is one of the most beautiful countries I’ve ever had the pleasure of traveling to. Highly recommend!"
The most famous Islamic architecture in the world!
The Taj Mahal in Agra is a prime example of Mughal and Islamic architecture, built between 1632 and 1653 by Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal.
Loomer visited New Delhi in March 2026 and later the Taj Mahal following a public controversy over her previous social media posts. During her trip, journalists challenged her over old anti-India, xenophobic, and racist posts on social media. Screenshots of derogatory remarks resurfaced online. Loomer publicly apologised after the backlash, stating, "I shouldn’t have said some of the things that I said," and added that she “loves India.”
Loomer has criticised Islam in the past, claiming there is no moderate form of the religion and alleging it calls for violence against Jews and Christians. Hasan saw an opportunity to call out her stance after she praised the Taj Mahal as a beautiful monument, asking how she could criticise Islam yet appreciate the architectural beauty of the Taj Mahal.
One social media user even asked Laura: "Answer this honestly. Who paid you? And how much?"
Loomer replied: "Uh, it’s called getting invited to speak at a conference. I spoke at a news media conference in India with reporters from all around the world… Been scheduled to speak since last year. Wasn’t paid. Was thrilled to visit India. You do realize there are conferences all around the world, right?"

Sunset Feasts: Hitting the Ramzan food trail in Bengaluru
Mar 19, 2026
As dusk falls over Bengaluru during Ramadan, several neighbourhoods turn into vibrant food hubs. The call to prayer at sunset marks the end of the day's fast — with no food and no water — and soon the smell of grilled meat, spices, and desserts fills the air. From traditional Muslim neighborhoods to newer festival sites, the city embraces a month-long celebration of culinary delights and community. Popular hotspots this year include Sheesh Mahal on Palace Grounds, Koramangala near Empire, and the Chandni Chowk area in Shivajinagar.
The iftar food streets are the most iconic attractions, with rows of evening stalls serving dishes prepared specially for breaking the fast. Slow-cooked haleem is a crowd favourite, with many opting for skewers of seekh kebabs, boti kebabs, and malai tikka sizzling over charcoal grills while vendors flip baida roti, keema samosas, and crispy cutlets on large iron tawas. Many stalls also offer biryani, mandi rice, khichda, and nalli nihari, attracting both fasting devotees and curious food lovers. “I’m a mother and homemaker often bored to death at home. This year, I set up a stall with homemade kebabs, cakes, sweets, and chocolates. It is very empowering for me and other women here,” said Farah Mubarak at the Sheesh Mahal Ramadan food festival.
Desserts round out the experience with phirni, malpua and rabri, jalebi, and sheer kurma and as well as Turkish sweets such as baklava and kunafa. Rose milk (mohabbat ki sharbaat) and refreshing lime soda are among the favourite drinks.
A Festival Of Communities
Ramzan food culture has moved beyond traditional areas, drawing a wide mix of visitors. “We welcome people from all communities. This is our second year organising this festival at Palace Sheesh Mahal, with stalls offering food, fashion, jewellery and home-made attar perfumes. Hundreds of food stalls remain open from 5 pm to 3 am,” said Muyeen Wahab, the organiser of the 20-day festival, which will end on March 19. This festival is the most sought-after this year, with organised stalls and expos under a single roof. "Most Muslims will fast throughout the month, every day with just suhur/sehri and iftar daily. This is already considered a healthy practice. So, we generally don’t dedicate special healthy meals at stalls because after fasting, people do love to indulge in all sorts of delicacies,” said Muyeen Wahab.
In Shivajinagar, Chandni Chowk, Mosque Road and nearby streets, host a bustling Ramadan mela with shawarma, kebabs, seafood dishes, and elaborate iftar platters alongside classic dishes for the month of fasting. “It’s a tradition to set up stalls for everyone to enjoy delicious food and embrace the celebrations. Skewers are the most in demand among people,” said Fahad, a vendor at the Shivajinagar mela.
At Koramangala, haleem vendor Abdul said they often cook the meals before dawn and after 8 pm daily, to keep them fresh. “After breaking our daily fast, we set up the food stalls for everyone.”
Warm, Cosy Home Gatherings
House gatherings to break the fast are an equally cherished tradition. Friends Shahista and Fathima Siraj curated a community iftar gathering at home, designing and styling the entire table with a refined, Pinterest-inspired aesthetic that blended elegance with warmth.
The spread included both vegetarian and non-vegetarian delicacies to keep it inclusive. "More than a dining experience, the gathering aimed to create a space where people from different backgrounds can connect, share moments, and celebrate the spirit of Ramadan together," said Shahista.
Tameena Ali, who recently attended two house iftars stretching till 5 am, said, "The food was mostly homemade with minimal catering.” She also went to eat from stalls in Frazer Town and Koramangala. "House gatherings feel warm and personal, while street parties are more fun and lavish." Not just food, she was also busy buying accessories such as rings, pendants and earrings to match her newly-purchased outfits for Eid.
What sets Bengaluru’s Ramadan scene apart is its diverse crowd — tech workers stopping by after work, families out for an evening, students and tourists. The lively conversations, clanging ladles and the glow of festive lights create an atmosphere reminiscent of an enchanting street carnival.
Free Sehri boxes for those who are fasting
Irfan Khan (36), distributes 1,100 sehri boxes daily within a 14 km radius around Chickpet Metro Station with the help of 100 volunteers. The ‘Irfan I Care Sehri Project’ distributes boxes to patients and their families in hospitals and to people living in PGs, funded mostly by contributions from relatives.
Another team led by Sadiq Rahmatullah distributes 500-600 sehri meals in Shivajinagar, Ulsoor, Benson Town, Kamraj Commercial Area, Chinnappa Garden, Marappa Garden, and Vasanthnagar. "We provide sehri boxes which usually include ghee rice, dal, vegetables, sometimes mutton biryani, raita, and occasionally a sweet — enough for those fasting to start their day with dignity," he said.
Voice Box
Iftar gatherings carry great blessings — sharing food, strengthening bonds and remembering Allah together. Even offering a simple date or water can become a source of immense reward.

Iftar means simply to break the fast. During Ramadan, we bond over food, rituals and conversation. We had a small get together at our place last week.
One of the major pillars in Islam is zakah(zakat). It is an annual financial obligation for Muslims who meet a minimum wealth threshold. Most people give money and food during Ramadan. Money is mostly given in charity to people in need, and food is given to everyone.

For the past five years, during the blessed month of Ramzan, our small team has come together every night to prepare and distribute Sehri meals to people who may not have access to food before fasting. What started as a small effort has now grown into a beautiful initiative where many helping hands join us to cook, pack, and deliver around 500–600 Sehri boxes daily across areas like Shivajinagar, Ulsoor, Benson Town, and Vasanthnagar.

Jamaat-e-Islami urges action over Eid al-Fitr travel 'mismanagement', 'fare irregularities'
19 Mar 2026
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has alleged that the transport sector is unprepared for the Eid rush, with weak monitoring in place.
The party also claimed that there are no effective measures to curb overcharging, extortion on roads, and passenger suffering.
Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar made the remarks in a statement today.
In the statement, he expressed deep shock, grief, and concern over the death of a youth in a launch accident at Sadarghat in Dhaka, and injuries to many passengers after several coaches of the Nilsagar Express derailed in Adamdighi of Bogura.
Porwar called the death of Md Sohel in the Sadarghat incident “heart-rending” and expressed condolences to his family. He also hoped for the swift rescue of the missing and full recovery of the injured, including those hurt in the train accident.
He said the two recent incidents are not isolated, "but rather a reflection of long-standing mismanagement, negligence, and weak oversight in the country’s transport system". He noted that ensuring safe travel is a fundamental responsibility of the state, one that has yet to be fully realised.
Highlighting a "lack of adequate" preparations for Eid travel, he said that despite rising passenger pressure, necessary safety measures and management have not been strengthened. As a result, overcharging, extortion on roads, and prolonged passenger suffering persist.
In the statement, he urged the relevant ministries and authorities to ensure impartial investigations into the incidents and take visible, strict action against those responsible. He also called for strengthened security measures during Eid travel, effective fare control, and immediate steps to stop extortion on roads.
He further urged law enforcement agencies, including Fire Service and Civil Defence and the police, to play a more active role during the remaining Eid travel period and the return journeys after the holiday. He stressed the need for deploying additional personnel where necessary and enhancing coordination among relevant agencies.

Sadarghat accident: Two probe bodies formed, permits of two launches cancelled
19 Mar 2026
Two committees have been formed to investigate the Sadarghat accident that left one person dead, one critically injured, and at least one missing.
State Minister for Shipping Rajib Ahsan said the committees have been asked to submit their reports within three working days. He shared the information with reporters after visiting the spot last night.
The route permits of the two launches involved in the incident have also been cancelled, he said.
One person was killed and another critically injured after a launch rammed into a group of passengers who were waiting to board their launch from a dinghy boat off the Sadarghat Launch Terminal yesterday afternoon.
Country boats are often used to ferry passengers to launches not berthed at the Sadarghat terminal pier.
A short video clip of the incident shows a dinghy stopping beside a launch, only to be rammed by another launch while passengers were still scrambling to get off.
The deceased was identified as Sohel Fakir. His father, Miraj Hossain, 52, has been missing since the incident. Sohel’s wife, Rubi, is undergoing treatment at a hospital with serious injuries.
One of the probe bodies will be led by Abu Islam, additional secretary of the shipping ministry, while the other will be headed by Saiful Islam, director (administration) of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).
“We are very serious about this. Anyone found responsible will face the highest legal action,” the state minister said.
He added that compensation will be provided to the victim’s family, while treatment for the injured is being arranged on a priority basis.
He also said the injured woman is pregnant.
“We spoke to the doctors. The mother is stable and her unborn child is also doing fine,” he said.

Dhaka all set for Eid congregations
19 MARCH 2026
The Dhaka South and North city corporations have completed preparations for the main Eid-ul-Fitr congregations, with a focus on ensuring safety, crowd management, and a comfortable environment for worshippers.
The main congregation under DSCC will be held at the National Eidgah ground adjacent to the Supreme Court premises at 8:30am.
DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam, after inspecting the venue, said all arrangements have been taken to ensure a smooth and peaceful congregation.
The prime minister, chief justice, cabinet members, diplomats, and other senior officials are expected to attend the congregation at the Eidgah, he added.
The Eidgah, spread over about 25,400 square metres, can accommodate around 35,000 devotees at a time. A large covered structure has been set up with adequate fans, lighting, and air-cooling facilities. Separate prayer spaces and entry routes have been arranged for women.
Authorities have also taken contingency measures in view of possible rain, including waterproof coverings and rapid drainage systems. In case of adverse weather, the main congregation will be shifted to Baitul Mukarram National Mosque at 9:00am.
Facilities have been arranged for around 140 people to perform ablution simultaneously. Safe drinking water, emergency medical services, and mobile toilets will also be available on-site.
Law enforcement agencies will maintain strict surveillance with archway screening at entrances, while four entry and seven exit gates have been designated to manage crowd movement. Fire service units will remain on standby.
Worshippers have been requested not to carry any sharp or flammable object.
Meanwhile, DNCC will hold its main Eid congregation at the old trade fair ground in Agargaon at 8:00am.
DNCC Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan said measures have been taken to ensure a hassle-free Eid congregation.
A steel-structured shed has been installed to prevent disruption in case of rainfall. Arrangements have been made for around 10,000 worshippers, with provisions to expand capacity if needed. Separate prayer areas and entry routes have been designated for women.
Security arrangements include archway screening at entry points and deployment of a large number of law enforcement personnel.
Officials said coordinated preparations by the two city corporations are aimed at ensuring that residents can offer Eid prayers in a safe, orderly, and comfortable setting.

Islamabad, Kabul Announce Temporary Eid al-Fitr Truce
By Fidel Rahmati
March 19, 2026
Pakistan and the Taliban government have announced a temporary halt in military operations against each other ahead of Eid al-Fitr, signaling a brief pause in escalating cross-border tensions.
Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Taliban government, said in a statement that the suspension of operations came after requests from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar. He thanked the three countries for their mediation efforts.
Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar also confirmed that Islamabad would temporarily stop its attacks against the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan during the Eid period.
The Taliban said the pause also applies to their military campaign known as “Rad al-Zulm” against Pakistan. However, the group stressed that its defensive forces remain fully prepared to respond firmly to any threat or aggression.
The announcement comes after days of heightened hostilities between the two sides, including Pakistani strikes inside Afghanistan and Taliban warnings of retaliation. The conflict has sharply raised tensions along the border.
The latest violence drew widespread condemnation from regional and religious bodies. Reports said victims of a recent Pakistani attack in Kabul included women and children, deepening outrage over the human cost of the confrontation.
Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar appear to have played a key diplomatic role in preventing further escalation at a sensitive moment before Eid al-Fitr, when calls for restraint often grow stronger across the Muslim world.
While the truce offers a short-term opening for calm, both sides have made clear that their forces remain on alert, underscoring the fragility of the pause and the risk that fighting could resume quickly after Eid.

Afghanistan Declares Eid al-Fitr on Thursday, Saudi Arabia Sets Friday
By Fidel Rahmati
March 19, 2026
The Taliban administration has announced that Eid al-Fitr will be observed on Thursday in Afghanistan, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The decision was confirmed late Wednesday after officials said the Shawwal crescent moon had been sighted in several provinces.
In a statement, the Taliban-controlled Supreme Court said the moon was seen in parts of Helmand in the south, as well as Farah and Ghor in western Afghanistan. It added that testimonies from local residents were reviewed and approved by the government’s moon-sighting committee.
Taliban chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said Thursday would be the first day of Eid and offered greetings to the Afghanistan people. The announcement places Afghanistan at odds with several other Muslim-majority countries over the date of the holiday.
Saudi Arabia, however, declared Friday as Eid al-Fitr after announcing that the Shawwal crescent had not been sighted. The UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait also said Friday would mark the start of Eid after completing 30 days of Ramadan.
Turkey and Australia also set Friday as Eid, based on astronomical calculations and confirmed observations. Yemen, Lebanon, Palestine, and Iraq likewise officially announced Friday as the first day of the holiday.
Before the Taliban returned to power in 2021, Afghanistan traditionally followed Saudi Arabia’s lead in determining the date of Eid al-Fitr. In recent years, however, the Taliban authorities have increasingly relied on domestic moon sightings and their own religious rulings.
The start of Eid differs from country to country because some states rely on the physical sighting of the crescent moon, while others use astronomical calculations. These different methods often lead to varying dates for the beginning of Islamic holidays.

Afghanistan Media Crisis: Over 200 Journalists Lose Jobs in One Year
By Fidel Rahmati
March 18, 2026
On the occasion of National Journalist Day, marked on March 18, the Afghanistan Free Journalists Union reported a significant decline in the country’s media workforce over the past year. According to the report, 228 journalists and media employees have lost their jobs, raising serious concerns about the future of the media sector.
The findings show that the total number of media workers has decreased from 5,047 to 4,819. While some journalists have found opportunities in emerging media platforms, these gains have not been enough to offset the overall losses across the industry.
Economic pressures and the lack of sustainable financial support have been identified as key factors behind the shrinking workforce. Media outlets continue to struggle to maintain operations, leading to layoffs and reduced capacity.
The union emphasized that protecting journalists’ jobs and strengthening their professional skills require targeted and effective support from both national and international organizations. Without such support, the media landscape could face further deterioration.
National Journalist Day serves as an important moment to reflect on the challenges faced by journalists and media organizations. It also highlights the urgent need to address the issues affecting press freedom and working conditions.
Over the past few years, Afghanistan’s media sector has undergone significant changes due to political, economic, and social shifts. These transformations have reshaped how information is produced and shared, often limiting the reach and independence of traditional outlets.
Independent media plays a crucial role in promoting transparency, accountability, and social cohesion. However, ongoing financial instability and reduced workforce capacity threaten its ability to fulfill these responsibilities effectively.
The continued loss of journalists not only impacts those directly affected but also weakens the overall flow of reliable information in society. This can have long-term consequences for public awareness and democratic engagement.

Qatar says Iran attacked LNG hub; United Arab Emirates shuts gas facilities
March 19, 2026
Qatar’s state oil giant QatarEnergy said on Wednesday that Iranian missile attacks on Ras Laffan, the site of the country’s core LNG processing operations, caused “extensive damage,” while the UAE shut gas facilities after intercepting missiles early on Thursday. The attacks, which drew a furious response from US President Donald Trump, came hours after Iran issued evacuation warnings for several oil facilities across Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar, following strikes on its own energy infrastructure in South Pars and Asaluyeh. QatarEnergy, the world’s second-largest LNG exporter, said in a statement that its emergency response team was deployed immediately to contain fires caused by the attack. No casualties were reported and all personnel were accounted for, it added. Ras Laffan, located 80 km (50 miles) north of Doha, is an energy-industry hub and hosts several international companies including Shell, the world’s biggest LNG trader.
“We are currently assessing any potential impact on any asset operated or utilized by Shell in Ras Laffan Industrial City and will provide further information in due course,” a Shell spokesperson said. The energy major has a 30 percent stake in a 7.8 million-metric-tons-a-year LNG facility and investments in yet-to-produce LNG plants at Ras Laffan. It also has a 100 percent interest in the Pearl gas-to-liquids plant in the hub, with capacity to process up to 1.6 billion cubic feet per day of wellhead gas.
QatarEnergy said the Pearl gas-to-liquids facility had suffered extensive damage. Several LNG facilities were hit by missile attacks in the early hours of Thursday, causing “sizeable fires” and further damage, it added.
Trump threatens response
Qatar produces 77 million metric tons of LNG annually and is the world’s second-largest exporter of the fuel used in power generation and industries. The Laffan refinery primarily processes condensate into refined products including aviation fuel.
In a statement on social media, Trump warned Iran not to attack Qatari LNG facilities again and threatened to “massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field” if it did so. He said Israel had attacked South Pars without informing Qatar or the United States.
Qatar’s foreign ministry told Iran’s security and military attaches to leave the country within 24 hours and declared them “persona non grata.” In a statement, the ministry condemned the attack on Ras Laffan as a “direct threat” to Qatar’s national security and accused Iran of taking an “irresponsible approach.”
Saul Kavonic, head of research at Australia’s MST Marquee, said attacks on Ras Laffan “could cause a lasting global gas shortage, but this won’t pressure the Trump administration because the US benefits economically from high global gas prices.”
Gas facilities shut down in UAE
In the UAE, authorities said they were responding to incidents at the Habshan gas facilities and at the Bab oil field caused by falling debris from intercepted missiles.
The gas facilities were shut down and no injuries were reported, the Abu Dhabi Media Office said.
The Habshan complex, operated by Abu Dhabi state oil giant ADNOC, is one of the world’s largest gas processing facilities, comprising five plants with a total capacity of 6.1 billion standard cubic feet per day (bscfd), according to ADNOC.

The Palestinian Red Crescent confirmed four fatalities, all women, and six injuries ranging from moderate to minor, in the Beit Awa area near Hebron, marking the first Palestinian deaths in the ongoing Middle East war.
The Palestinian medics said the deaths were caused by “shrapnel falling.”
Shortly before the deaths were confirmed, Israel’s military said it had identified “missiles launched from Iran toward the territory of the State of Israel,” adding that it was “operating to intercept the threat.”

Who are the Iraqi groups involved in the Middle East war?
March 19, 2026
BAGHDAD: Since the start of the Middle East war, Tehran-backed Iraqi groups have repeatedly attacked US interests, whether bases hosting troops, diplomatic missions, or oil facilities.
The armed groups, which the US designates as terrorist organizations, have, from the onset, warned that the Middle East conflict will become a prolonged war of attrition.
Who are these groups and why did they get involved?
- The main groups -
“The production of drones and rockets within the axis of resistance has become as common as making Kleicha at home,” the Al-Nujaba movement said in a statement, referring to an Iraqi homemade sweet typically filled with dates or nuts.
US-blacklisted Iran-backed groups unite under the loose alliance of The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which has been claiming daily drone and rocket attacks on the “enemy” in Iraq and across the region.
They are also part of the Iran-led so-called “axis of resistance,” which has included Lebanon’s Hezbollah, Hamas in Gaza and Yemen’s Houthis.
The Iraqi groups have pledged to defend the Islamic republic since the Middle East war erupted with an Israeli-US attack on Iran on February 28.
- Active today -
+ Kataeb Hezbollah: This group has long spearheaded attacks on US interests in Iraq, and over the years it has lost key commanders in American strikes.
It has grown in power and become involved in politics, and now supports a parliamentary bloc of six seats.
+ Kataeb Sayyid Al-Shuhada is led by Abu Alaa Al-Walai, who has a seat within the Coordination Framework, the ruling Shiite alliance that holds the parliamentary majority.
+ The Al-Nujaba movement is the only armed group that has steered clear of politics.
+ Some groups have so far stayed out of the war, such as Asaib Ahl Al-Haq, which has shifted its focus to politics and now holds a sizable parliamentary bloc of 27 seats.
- A war of attrition -
Iran-backed groups have targeted the US embassy in Iraq’s capital, its diplomatic and logistics facility at Baghdad’s airport, and oil fields operated by foreign companies.
The autonomous Kurdistan region, which hosts American troops and a major US consulate, has also been a significant target.
It remains unclear what these groups have hit across the broader region, but earlier in the war Kuwait summoned Iraq’s ambassador over attacks on its territory.
Lahib Higel of the Brussels-based International Crisis Group said “the so-called resistance groups joined the fray because this is an existential battle for the Iranian regime.
“In Iran’s Axis they are the last defensive line, and the killing of Supreme Leader (Ali) Khamenei was a signal that their own survival is at risk.”
The Al-Nujaba group claimed to have a large stockpile of drones and rockets produced in small workshops.
Higel said Iran has withheld heavy weapons from these groups, unlike for Hezbollah in Lebanon or Yemen’s Houthis.
Iraqi groups have drones and rockets, as well as “short-range ballistic missiles,” that they have used in the past.
“This is definitely a war of attrition for them, with the aim of evicting the US from Iraq,” she said.
- The US reacts -
For years, the US has struck these groups, killing several of their commanders.
Since the war started, strikes blamed on the US and Israel have repeatedly targeted them, beginning just hours into the conflict with attacks on Kataeb Hezbollah’s main stronghold, the Jurf Al-Sakher base south of Baghdad.
Neither the US nor Israel have claimed responsibility, but the attacks have become almost a daily occurrence.
Strikes also hit bases belonging to the Hashed Al-Shaabi, a former paramilitary alliance now integrated within Iraq’s regular armed forces, but which also encompasses brigades belonging to Tehran-backed groups.
At least 43 Iran-backed fighters, as well as members of the Hashed Al-Shaabi, have been killed in strikes since the war began, according to an AFP tally based on factions and security sources.
The most significant escalation came when strikes hit the heart of Baghdad.
On Saturday, a missile struck a house in the capital, killing three Kataeb Hezbollah members, including a commander.
The strike also wounded the group’s leader, Abu Hussein Al-Hamidawi, who has since received treatment, according to a source in the armed group.
Targeted assassinations have already claimed the lives of many top commanders within the axis of resistance, mostly after the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza in 2023.
“The assassination chapter” of the war likely started in Iraq, an Iraqi security official told AFP.

Kuwait arrests 10 Hezbollah members, thwarts ‘terrorist’ plot
March 18, 2026
KUWAIT CITY: Kuwait arrested 10 militants affiliated with the Iran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah group on Wednesday, who were accused of plotting “terrorist” actions against vital infrastructure, the interior ministry said.
This was the second Hezbollah-affiliated cell to be arrested in Kuwait this week, as the Gulf faced daily Iranian attacks during the Middle East war, which has seen Tehran-backed groups including Hezbollah join the conflict.
“The State Security Agency has successfully thwarted a plot for a terrorist operation targeting vital installations,” the interior ministry said.
“Ten citizens, members of a terrorist group affiliated with the banned Hezbollah terrorist organization were apprehended,” it added.
The ministry shared a video of seized items including Hezbollah flags, small drones and pictures of Iran’s slain Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Hezbollah’s former leader Hassan Nasrallah, killed in an Israeli attack.
On Monday, Kuwait’s interior ministry said it arrested 16 people — 14 Kuwaitis and two Lebanese nationals — affiliated with Hezbollah who had planned a “sabotage plot.”
The ministry said the group had sought to recruit individuals and that it seized a number of weapons, camera drones and morse code communication devices.
Hezbollah denied that any of its members were among the 16 arrested.

Rare reptile spotted in Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders region
March 18, 2026
RIYADH: The pale agama (Trapelus agnetae) has been spotted at several natural sites across the Northern Borders, highlighting the rich biodiversity found in the region’s desert and semi-desert landscapes.
The species belongs to the family Agamidae and the genus Trapelus. The medium-sized reptile is distinguished by a relatively flattened body and a light gray color marked with subtle dorsal stripes and dark rings along the tail.
It features a triangular head and long limbs ending in clawed toes that help it move across hard soil and rocky plains. One of its most distinctive characteristics is a row, or sometimes two rows, of small spines above the ear opening.
The pale agama inhabits open arid environments such as rocky plains, volcanic deserts, and dry grasslands. It is also occasionally found in valleys and sandy depressions.
Active during the day, the reptile primarily feeds on small insects, while birds of prey, including owls, are among its natural predators, forming part of the desert’s balanced food chain.
Individuals typically reach a total length of about 19 centimeters, with the body, from snout to vent, measuring around 8.8 centimeters.
Documenting the species in natural habitats across the Northern Borders region serves as a key indicator of healthy and stable ecosystems, highlighting the importance of conserving biodiversity across the Kingdom.

Saudi FM warns patience ‘not unlimited’ as Saudi Arabia reserves right to act against Iran
March 19, 2026
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, warned Thursday that the Kingdom’s restraint in the face of escalating Iranian attacks “is not unlimited,” signaling that military action remains an option.
“The Kingdom and its partners possess significant capabilities, and the patience we have shown is not unlimited. It could be a day, two days, or a week—I will not say,” he told reporters following an emergency meeting of Arab and Islamic foreign ministers in Riyadh.
In some of his strongest remarks since the conflict began, Prince Faisal said Saudi Arabia “reserves the right to take military action if deemed necessary,” warning that continued Iranian escalation would carry political and moral consequences.
He added that the “little trust” rebuilt with Tehran after the 2023 restoration of diplomatic ties “has been completely shattered,” and cautioned that further attacks could leave “almost nothing” to salvage in the relationship.
Since February 28, Iran has launched waves of missiles and armed drones targeting Saudi Arabia and neighboring Gulf states — including the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar — in what Tehran says is retaliation for US-Israeli strikes on targets inside Iran.
The conflict intensified on Wednesday after Iran accused Israel of striking facilities at the South Pars gas field and vowed to target energy infrastructure across the Gulf. Authorities in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE reported attacks on oil and gas facilities the same day.
In the Saudi capital, air defenses intercepted four ballistic missiles targeting Riyadh, according to the Ministry of Defense. Debris from intercepted projectiles fell near a refinery south of the city, while residents reported hearing explosions and receiving emergency alerts — marking a rare moment when the conflict was directly felt in the capital.
Saudi defense officials say air defenses have intercepted at least 457 drones, 40 ballistic missiles, and seven cruise missiles since the start of the escalation. The UAE has reportedly faced an even higher volume of attacks, while other Gulf states have also been hit.
“Prepared in advance”
Prince Faisal said the strikes appeared to have been “prepared in advance” and accused Iran of carrying out “premeditated hostile actions” against its neighbors, both directly and through regional proxies.
He also confirmed that two Saudi oil refineries were targeted, contradicting earlier claims by Iran’s ambassador that strikes were limited to US assets.
“Iran has not dealt with its neighbors in the spirit of brotherhood, but with a hostile view,” he said, adding that Gulf states had repeatedly urged Tehran to halt support for armed groups and ensure the security of maritime navigation.
Iran has been accused of backing the Houthi movement, which has targeted commercial shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb, as well as Hezbollah, whose confrontation with Israel has intensified the crisis in Lebanon.
Israeli strikes in Lebanon since early March — triggered by Hezbollah attacks in support of Iran — have killed at least 968 people and wounded more than 2,400, according to the Associated Press, citing Lebanon’s health ministry. More than one million people have been displaced amid widespread evacuation warnings.
Despite the escalation, Prince Faisal said Saudi Arabia still prefers diplomacy, but warned that continued attacks could close the door to de-escalation.
More than one million people have been displaced, with Israel issuing widespread evacuation warnings across parts of the country.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan joined Prince Faisal on the sidelines of an emergency Arab and Islamic foreign ministers meeting to discuss the Iran war crisis.
The ministers discussed Iran’s military escalation in the region and continued consultation and coordination on achieving security and stability in the Middle East.
The US and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28 and Iran has launched missiles and drones at its Arab neighbors, Israel and US assets in the Arabian Gulf region.
Talking earlier to reporters, Prince Faisal said the Kingdom “reserves the right to take military action if deemed necessary,” warning that continued Iranian escalation would carry political and moral consequences.
Tehran attacked a major energy hub in Qatar on Wednesday after an Israeli strike against Iran’s South Pars gas field.
QatarEnergy said several of its LNG facilities were subjected to missile attacks in the early hours of Thursday, causing sizable fires and extensive damage. Qatar’s interior ministry said on Thursday two fires at Ras Laffan industrial area had been fully contained, and no injuries were reported.
In a post on social media, US President Donald Trump blamed Israel for the South Pars attack and promised to punish Iran severely if it attacked Qatar again.
“Israel, out of anger for what has taken place in the Middle East, has violently lashed out at a major facility known as South Pars Gas Field in Iran.”
The US “will massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before” if Qatar was targeted.
He also promised that the US was unaware of the South Pars attack and promised, “NO MORE ATTACKS WILL BE MADE BY ISRAEL”

Huge Platt Fields Park Eid prayer event attended by thousands is cancelled
Ramazani Mwamba
18 Mar 2026
The popular Eid prayer and funfair has been cancelled this year. The news comes Muslims across the region prepare to celebrate the end of Ramadan on Friday (March 20).
Organisers say that the outdoor prayer, which is held at Platt Fields Park, Fallowfield, has been postponed due to "safety and operational requirements" relating to terrain and parking spaces.
The event, which is known to attract more than 20,000 people since its inception in 2017, usually features prayers, food stalls, local traders, and a funfair.
However, this year, the huge communal prayers, which it is known for, will not take place outdoor or indoor. Previously, prayers were performed inside the Platt Lane Sport Complex due to bad weather, however, this will not happen either due to insufficient parking facilities.
Worshippers have been told to make alternative arrangements by praying at local mosques instead.
"We encourage everyone to attend their local mosques or neighbourhood prayer arrangements, many of which will organise multiple sessions on Eid morning to welcome worshippers safely and comfortably," organisers said.
However, the funfair will be open from Friday, March 20 to Sunday March 22.
Organisers say that the decision was made following discussions with Manchester City Council and partner agencies. They expect the outdoor prayers to return in May for Eid-al-Adha.
An excerpt from the announcement reads: "After careful consideration, the organised Eid prayer will not take place at Platt Fields Park or the Platt Lane Sports Complex in March 2026.
"This decision has been made to ensure that all arrangements meet the necessary safety and operational requirements associated with gatherings of this scale. We kindly ask members of the community not to travel to Platt Fields Park expecting to attend the Eid prayer, as the organised prayer gathering will not take place there this March."
Speaking to the M.E.N, organiser and local councillor, Rabnawaz Akbar, said that the cancellation was due to worries about weather, terrain and parking.
"This year the grass is quite soft," he said. "There wasn't really enough hard standing space for cars. If the cars went on the green grass and it rained today or tomorrow, you could end up with vehicles stuck in there.
"The grass could be damaged severely, and it would take a long time to repair.
"We looked at the dome, but the car park facilities there wasn't sufficient, so on those grounds we decided to keep the funfair and some stalls, but the prayers will be held in mosques.
"The number of people attending and the number of cars attending means that cars will inevitably park on the grass. There's always a risk that it rains heavily the grass could be damaged or cars could be stuck.
"We totally understand this is a very much-loved event and people are disappointed, but we can't battle with the climate."

EU state’s leader urges return to ‘harmony’ in ties with Russia
19 Mar, 2026
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has urged the EU to rebuild mutually beneficial relations with Russia once the Ukraine conflict is over.
In an interview with GB News published on Wednesday, Orban said the West upended the European security landscape by encouraging Ukraine’s bid to join NATO despite Russia’s “very clear” warning that it views the bloc’s eastward expansion as a security threat.
Hungary believes Russia should not be excluded from any future European arrangements on security, energy, and trade, Orban said.
Hungary has long criticized the EU’s push to phase out Russian energy imports, arguing that the policy has driven up energy prices across member states and hurt businesses. Around 83% of the bloc’s industrial competitiveness indicators were already stagnant or worsening, according to a Deloitte report published last month.
Orban has also argued that sanctions imposed on Russia over Ukraine have backfired, taking a heavy toll on the EU economy.
The escalating conflict in the Middle East has further driven a surge in oil and gas prices in recent weeks, after Iran closed the vital Strait of Hormuz to Western shipping.
Last week, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto urged the EU to lift its ban on Russian energy imports, arguing that sanctions are causing “serious harm to European people and the European economy.”
Russian presidential investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev said the Iran conflict further exposed the sanctions as “strategic blunders.” The EU will “inevitably beg for more Russian gas,” Dmitriev wrote on X on Tuesday, citing HSBC projections of a 40% increase in European natural gas prices.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow is considering redirecting its gas deliveries from Europe elsewhere. He added this month, however, that Russia will continue working with “reliable” partners, including Hungary and Slovakia.

PM urges Badenoch to sack shadow minister over Muslim comments
19 Mar 2026
Brian Wheeler
Sir Keir Starmer has called on Kemi Badenoch to sack shadow justice secretary Nick Timothy after he described a mass Muslim public prayer as an "act of domination and division".
Timothy was referring to the prayers which took place at an open iftar event in London's Trafalgar Square on Monday.
At prime minister's questions, Sir Keir urged Badenoch to condemn the Conservative MP's comments on social media, which he claimed showed her party had a "problem with Muslims".
Badenoch said the MP was "defending British values". The Tory leader's spokesman said Timothy's comments were based on footage showing segregated males praying at the event.
London mayor Sir Sadiq Khan was among thousands to attend the Trafalgar Square open iftar organised by the Ramadan Tent Project, which says it aims to improve relations between different communities.
The charity has hosted about 20 open iftar meals across the country this year, under the theme of hope.
An iftar is a meal shared at the end of a day of fasting during Ramadan, with prayers commonly taking place before or during.
In a post on X, Timothy said: "Mass ritual prayer in public places is an act of domination."
He added: "Perform these rituals in mosques if you wish. But they are not welcome in our public places and shared institutions."
The prime minister claimed Timothy's comments were "straight from the Islamist playbook".
"If he was in my team, he'd be gone. It's utterly appalling. She should denounce his comments and she should sack him," he said at PMQs.
Badenoch said Timothy was "defending British values" rather than "abolishing jury trials", drawing comparisons with Justice Secretary David Lammy's reform plans.
"I know who I would rather have sitting on the front bench next to me, and it's not him," she told the PM.
Sir Keir hit back by claiming the Conservatives were now aligned with far right activist Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.
"Even Tommy Robinson, I can hardly believe I'm saying this, has said today that if the shadow justice secretary had made these hateful comments two years ago the Conservative Party would have kicked him out.
"Tommy Robinson isn't some sort of moral signpost, he was pointing out how much their party has changed. They're more inclined to his views, and he's right about that. The fact he's sitting on her front bench shows she's too weak and has got absolutely no judgement."
Timothy's full post on X had read: "Too many are too polite to say this. But mass ritual prayer in public places is an act of domination.
"The Adhan - which declares there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger - is, when called in a public place, a declaration of domination.
"Perform these rituals in mosques if you wish. But they are not welcome in our public places and shared institutions.
"And given their explicit repudiation of Christianity they certainly do not belong in our churches and cathedrals.
"I am not suggesting everybody at Trafalgar Square last night is an Islamist. But the domination of public places is straight from the Islamist playbook.
"Trafalgar Square belongs to all of us. It is a national memorial to our independence and our salvation.
"Last night was not like a televised football match or a St Patrick's Day celebration. It was an act of domination and therefore division.
"It shouldn't happen again."
In the Commons, Sir Keir went on to say: "When I see religious events in Trafalgar Square, when I see Hindus celebrating Diwali, when I see Jews celebrating Chanukah live, when I see Christians performing the Passion of the Christ, or Muslims praying, that shows the great strength of our diverse city and country.
"I've never heard her party call out anything other than the Muslim events. It's only when Muslims are praying. The only conclusion is the Tory Party has got a problem with Muslims."
A spokesman for Badenoch said she stood by Timothy, adding: "The Conservative Party believes in British values and those British values mean we are an open and tolerant society, but with boundaries.
"And freedom of religion does not mean the freedom to do anything. It comes with responsibilities.
"People are free to practise their faith but that practice does not require exclusionary use of our shared civic spaces. That is not about worship. It becomes something else which undermines social cohesion. So that is where we draw the line. And that is what Nick Timothy was talking about."
He conceded that he did not have proof that women had been specifically excluded, but said it was clear from the pictures that it was "exclusionary" because women were "outside the barriers".
He would not be drawn on whether a Conservative government would ban single sex gatherings, saying it was about the "principle" of not having public events where women were excluded.
He denied the Conservatives were singling out one religion, saying: "The Conservatives had the first Muslim chancellor and had the first Muslim home secretary."

'I’m heartbroken': Sadiq Khan hits back at Tory MP who said mass Muslim prayer he joined was 'not welcome'
19 Mar 2026
Sir Sadiq Khan has hit back at a senior Tory MP who described a public Muslim prayer in which the Mayor took part as an “act of domination” and claimed it was “not welcome" in public.
Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy made the remarks following a weekend Ramadan event in Trafalgar Square, which was attended by the Mayor of London.
"Too many are too polite to say this. But mass ritual prayer in public places is an act of domination,” he posted on X on Tuesday.
He added: "Perform these rituals in mosques if you wish. But they are not welcome in our public places and shared institutions.
"And given their explicit repudiation of Christianity they certainly do not belong in our churches and cathedrals.
"I am not suggesting everybody at Trafalgar Square last night is an Islamist. But the domination of public places is straight from the Islamist playbook.”
Sir Sadiq said he had also hosted Christian, Jewish, Sikh and Hindu celebrations in Trafalgar Square
“I’m a born and raised Londoner,” he told La Repubblica. “I’ve never lived anywhere else really and I’ve been Mayor for ten years.
“I’m heartbroken, sad and I angry. I can understand why many British Muslims are scared by somebody who is so senior who wants to be the Lord Chancellor saying what he said.
“But worryingly his leader, someone who wants to be the Prime Minister Kemi Badenoch, thinking it is British values to single out Muslims. It is British values to respect each other.”
The Prime Minister called for Ms Badenoch to fire the shadow minister after he made the comments
Sir Keir said the comments meant the Conservative Party had become aligned with Tommy Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, after he had posted supportively of Mr Timothy's post.
Responding to a question from Ms Badenoch, Sir Keir said: "She appointed the Shadow Justice Secretary. He said last night that Muslims praying in public, including the Mayor of London, practising his faith, are not welcome.
"He described it as an act of domination. Straight from the Islamist playbook. If he was in my team, he'd be gone. It's utterly appalling. She should denounce his comments and she should sack him."
Ms Badenoch said Mr Timothy, who was previously a senior adviser to Baroness May when she was prime minister, was "defending British values" rather than "abolishing jury trials", drawing comparisons with Justice Secretary David Lammy.
"I know who I would rather have sitting on the front bench next to me, and it's not him," Ms Badenoch replied.
Sir Keir hit back and said: "Her position is that the shadow justice secretary is defending British values when he says Muslims praying together in Trafalgar Square are not welcome.
The fact he's sitting on her front bench shows she's too weak and has got absolutely no judgment."
As Ms Badenoch continued to ask Sir Keir about whether he had properly vetted Lord Mandelson when he was appointed UK ambassador to the US, the Prime Minister replied by drawing attention to Mr Timothy's post.
He said: "When I see religious events in Trafalgar Square, when I see Hindus celebrating Diwali, when I see Jews celebrating Chanukah live, when I see Christians performing the Passion of the Christ, or Muslims praying, that shows the great strength of our diverse city and country.
"I've never heard her party call out anything other than the Muslim events. It's only when Muslims are praying. The only conclusion is the Tory Party has got a problem with Muslims."

Archdeacon of Hackney shares a meal with Muslims at Ramadan
18TH MARCH
By Meg Jenkins
The Archdeacon of Hackney shared a meal at the East London Mosque to 'bridge the gaps created by social and religious differences.'
Peter Farley-Moore attended the mosque’s annual interfaith iftar to represent the Diocese of London at the gathering, held under the theme of United for Goodness.
The event brings together religious leaders, diplomats, and community representatives to strengthen interfaith relationships and promote understanding through dialogue.
Guests included members of the Metropolitan Police, headteachers, and representatives from Tower Hamlets Council.
Mr Farley-Moore said: "By being here tonight - sharing in a meal, bridging the gaps created by cultural and religious differences - we are sharing in the work of solidarity.
"The East London Mosque has been established as a solid place in this community.
"A space where national and socio-economic differences are laid to one side and a deeper unity is found."
He highlighted everyday acts of solidarity in the surrounding community, pointing to schemes such as the Bow Food Bank.
Mr Farley-Moore said: “Today we see solidarity expressed in our community through food banks and community projects.
"The Bow Food Bank - just along the road is a great example of unity.
"People of all faiths and none are welcome to give and receive; it’s a place of practical help and moral courage for all those facing the instability of economic hardship."
Speakers on the night included H.E. Osman Topčagić, Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who reflected on his childhood experiences of Ramadan in Bosnia.
He described a time when Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived side by side and celebrated together.
Junaid Ahmed, CEO of the East London Mosque, welcomed guests and called for unity.
Mr Ahmed said: "United for Goodness is more than a theme – it is a call to action.
"It calls on us to look beyond differences and focus on what unites us: which is a desire for justice, opportunity, dignity, and hope for all.
"This evening is not only about breaking our fast together. It is about strengthening bonds. It is about renewing partnerships. It is about reaffirming our collective responsibility to serve with integrity and compassion.
"We hope and pray we are able to achieve that tonight.”

18.03.2026
The official opening ceremony of the Islamic Civilization Center and an iftar were held in Uzbekistan with the participation of the country’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the Uzbekistan National News Agency (UzA) reported.
“Highly qualified specialists from France, China, the United Kingdom, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Türkiye, Germany, Spain, Italy, Malaysia, Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia, India, Central Asia, and several other countries also took an active part in the design and construction of the Center, and its equipment with modern information technologies,” the President of Uzbekistan said.
“Starting the construction of the Islamic Civilization Center, I set myself the goal of finding and bringing to our country any manuscript or exhibit related to our history, wherever in the world it might be located. New international scientific expeditions will be organized to identify and study rare manuscripts held in various countries worldwide. Domestic and foreign scholars, as well as leading research centers worldwide, will be involved in this work. To expand the scope of the Center’s activities, offices of organizations such as ICESCO, IRCICA, the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, the Timurid Art and History Association in France, and TURKSOY have been established through international cooperation. It is planned to create all necessary conditions to strengthen cooperation with them,” he noted.
Touching upon the scale and capabilities of the Center, the President noted that this unique complex is located on a site of nearly 10 hectares, and the total usable area of the building is 50,000 square meters. It features such exhibition halls as “The Pre-Islamic Period on the Territory of Uzbekistan”, “The First and Second Renaissance”, and “New Uzbekistan – the Foundation of the Third Renaissance”.
Significant work has been carried out to form and enrich the museum’s exhibitions. In the past year alone, they were supplemented with more than 1,500 exhibits, including around 800 ancient manuscripts, archaeological finds, and historical maps. It was emphasized that cooperation has been established with foreign auction houses, major collectors, and art dealers, and 743 original exhibits have been brought into the country.
In conclusion, the Uzbek President expressed confidence that the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan will forever remain a platform for peace, kindness, knowledge, and enlightenment, offering opportunities to the people and the international community alike.

Nicola Sturgeon urged to condemn Glasgow mosque protests
18TH MARCH
By Gabriel McKay
Nicola Sturgeon has been urged to condemn protests which have been targeting a mosque in her constituency, with demonstrators allegedly abusing and harassing Muslims.
The Al-Mahdi Islamic Centre on Albert Road serves the Shia community of Glasgow, and has been targeted for protests every Thursday during the holy month of Ramadan.
Attendees said it appeared the protests were being timed to coincide with iftar, the evening meal served at sunset when Muslims go to the mosque to break their fast.
The rodents are said by the pro-Shah protestors to be a depiction of the former ayatollah Ali Khamenei who has been dubbed 'Moosh Ali', meaning rat or mouse Ali in Persian, by anti-regime protestors.
However, the keffiyeh is an Arab rather than Persian headdress and the black and white fishnet style has become an international symbol of the Palestinian resistance.
The Iranian chafiyeh is primarily worn in rural regions and tends to feature darker hues like green, purple an blue.
American flags, Israeli flags and the flag of imperial Iran have also been waved by the demonstrators.
On February 26 a video from the scene appeared to show protestors chanting "baby killers, shame on you".
Wael Shawish, a member of the Scottish Palestinian Society, who is Sunni, is among those who have attended at the invitation of the mosque in recent weeks to offer support and, if necessary protection.
He tells The Herald: "This mosque is Shia, which is the same branch as the Iranian population.
“These protestors, if you want to call them that, stand outside a mosque which follows a certain branch of Islam and intimidate worshippers – what’s the connection? What’s the relationship? Why would they target the mosque?
“We’ve been campaigning for Palestine for decades and we’ve never dreamed of protesting outside a synagogue or a place of worship because it’s not appropriate.
“People go to a place of worship to talk to their God, that’s the ultimate peace.
"They’re not protesting, they’re really just abusing people. I’ve never seen anything like it, why would they abuse worshippers just because they happen to be of the same sect as people they don’t like?
“It’s simply inappropriate, so we just go there to show support so that if, God forbid, anything happens there is someone to protect these worshippers in the mosque.
"The Israeli information centre happens to be in one of the synagogues in the south side.
“It is entirely legitimate for us to protest the information centre but we would never dream of congregating outside of the synagogue to do so just in case people who are going to pray feel that they are being targeted.
“It’s legitimate to protest the centre, but because of its location we refrain.
“That, to me, is the logical thing to do. To go to a mosque and shout abuse at people is obscene.
"Especially in the month of Ramadan, people are tired, they’re exhausted, they’re hungry and they go to the mosque to have a prayer and maybe share a meal together."
Azzam, who worships at the mosque, said: "I feel sorry for them, they don't know what they are saying.
"We have been here for 35 years to pray together, to take the kids from the street and give them a good teaching of Islam. That is what we do here.
"These idiots come here, and maybe they have some problems in their own countries, but they shouldn't be at the mosque. This is the holy month of Ramadan, this place is very holy for us like any mosque."
The mosque is in Ms Sturgeon's Glasgow Southside constituency, and attendees say they have heard nothing from her on the subject.
A constituent wrote to the former First Minister: "I am writing as I am incredibly upset and concerned about a group who have been meeting to disrupt the mosque on Albert Road during the holy month of Ramadan.
"I want to know what will be done about this? If this were a church during Christmas my feelings are police would react far more strongly than they did last night."
It's understood that the former First Minister has raised concerns with Police Scotland.
The constituent has written to Ms Sturgeon several times over the past two years on the issue of Islamophobia and the Israeli war on Gaza. They say they have never received a response.
They told The Herald: "I have in the past respected, trusted and voted for Nicola Sturgeon to be my representative, as her constituent I have written countless times in relation to Palestine and received no response whatsoever.
"I feel ashamed to have voted for her, she has the power and platform to make steps that could literally save lives but I know more about her recent book release and new style than I do about her thoughts and actions on an active genocide."
After having been asked previously about being "surprisingly quiet" on Gaza by constituents, Ms Sturgeon said "what we are witnessing in Gaza is nothing short of a genocide".
Mr Shawish said: "We’re not getting any support from politicians and the police are seeing it as a political protest.
“People being at the mosque doesn’t mean they support the Iranian regime – why are you targeting people just for being part of the same religious group you don’t like?
“It’s like if you had problems between Britain and Ireland and Protestants in Glasgow started targeting the Catholics – it makes no sense.
“We make a distinction between Jewish people, and the Israeli state and the political ideology of Zionism. We don’t see every Jewish person as being pro-Israel, if you go to a pro-Palestine event you’ll see a lot of Jewish people there who are as outraged about the genocide that’s going on as anyone else.”
The Muslim Council of Scotland said: "We are deeply troubled by incidents of abuse, harassment and intimidation targeting worshippers and community members at the Al Mahdi Foundation (AMF) Centre in Glasgow during Ramadan.
"Demonstrations outside the mosque have caused fear and distress, particularly among women, children and elderly worshippers, with some feeling unable to attend prayers.
"Such conduct, including deliberate provocation and the disrespect of religious figures, is wholly unacceptable. Communities have expressed their fear of islamophobia and targeted hate.
"We stand in solidarity with those affected and reaffirm the right of all communities to worship freely and in safety.
"We welcome the engagement of Police Scotland and urge continued vigilance to ensure appropriate protection and reassurance for those attending places of worship.
"The safety, dignity and cohesion of all communities in Scotland must remain paramount."
A spokesperson from the Scottish Palestinian Society said: “The group of mostly men are being allowed to shout, swear, and exhibit obscene gestures at Muslims as they enter and leave the mosque.
"They even wave rats with nooses around their necks, sporting keffiyehs, a hateful image in relation to the ongoing genocide of Palestinians at the hands of Israel.
"Can you imagine any other faith being subjected to this and it being shrugged off as 'freedom of speech'?
"Would the police and authorities react the same way if threatening groups were targeting a church or a synagogue and where people would feel it's too dangerous to go and pray?
"What makes it even worse is that this has been going on for weeks in Nicola Sturgeon's constituency. She and her party have always been very vocal in their support of other communities.
"However, the ugly scenes outside the mosque, a protected place of worship, and the blatant harassment of Muslim families and community members have been met with more deafening silence.
"What will it take for the Scottish Government to show the same care and consideration to Muslims, as well as Palestinians undergoing a genocide?
"We as Muslims no longer feel safe in Scotland and we do not feel we are supported to observe our religion in peace and with dignity."
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers attended a pre-planned protest at Langside Road and Albert Road, Glasgow on Thursday, 12 March, 2025.
“There was a proportionate policing plan in place and no arrests were made.
“Officers engaged with those involved prior to the protest.
“Police Scotland is a rights-based organisation and our role is to ensure public safety while balancing the rights of protesters who wish to peacefully demonstrate.
“We remain committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of everyone in our communities and a proportionate policing plan is in place should there be further protests.”
A spokesperson for Nicola Sturgeon referred to her having signed a motion in solidarity with Palestine Action hunger strikers and the aforementioned response to accusations about her 'surprising silence' on the issue of Gaza.

CAIR-AZ Calls for Hate Crime Probe of Vandalism Targeting Crescent Moon Display Put Up by Muslim Students for Ramadan
March 18, 2026
The Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-AZ), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for a hate crime investigation of reported vandalism targeting a crescent moon Ramadan display put up by Muslim students in Tempe.
In a statement, CAIR-AZ Executive Director Azza Abuseif said:
“We strongly condemn the vandalism of a Ramadan display created by Muslim students and call for a full, transparent investigation into whether this was a hate-driven act. This is not a coincidence. It comes on the heels of HCM2002 advancing and a troubling wave of Islamophobic rhetoric from some of our state leaders, rhetoric that fuels hostility and puts real people at risk.
“All Americans, regardless of faith or background, have the right to live and express their beliefs without fear. Acts like this are not isolated. They are a direct threat to the safety, dignity, and belonging of our communities, and we will not stay silent.”
Earlier this month, CAIR-AZ welcomed an arrest for a reported attack targeting children at a mosque in north Phoenix.
Earlier today, CAIR’s Northern Ohio chapter welcomed the arrest of a man who allegedly plotted a mass shooting at an Ohio mosque.
Yesterday, CAIR’s Pittsburgh chapter welcomed the arrest of an individual accused of making threats against the Islamic Center of Western Pennsylvania (ICWP) and is calling for continued vigilance to protect Muslim communities.
According to CAIR’s most recent civil rights report, complaints of anti-Muslim bias and discrimination have continued to rise nationwide, reflecting an ongoing pattern of Islamophobia impacting communities across the country.
Last month, CAIR-AZ called on Arizona residents of all faiths and backgrounds to urge their state legislators and Governor Hobbs to oppose an unconstitutional, bigoted bill, SB1018, that purports to ban “sharia law” from being enforced in the state.
The resurgence of “anti-Sharia” bills nationwide reflects a coordinated political effort to weaponize fear of Islam to for political reasons.
Last year, CAIR released a congressional briefing memo, “Weaponized Islamophobia: The Return of the Anti-Sharia Hoax,” to every member of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, along with a companion educational document titled “Sharia in American Life.”
In January, CAIR-AZ welcomed a letter sent to Arizona legislators signed by dozens of local civil rights, advocacy and faith-based organizations who strongly oppose a defamatory resolution attacking CAIR-Arizona by anti-Muslim lawmaker Rep. John Gillette, who has previously referred to Muslims as “savages.”
CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.

School pupils explore Ramadan during mosque visit in Milford Haven
March 18, 2026
By Tom Sinclair
Community visit promotes understanding of faith and culture
PUPILS from Broad Haven Community Primary School were given a hands-on lesson in faith and culture during a visit to the Hamad Bin Khalifa Islamic Centre in Milford Haven.
In Wales, Religious Education forms a key part of the curriculum, with children learning about a range of faiths including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Sikhism. The aim is to help young people understand different beliefs, traditions and values, while encouraging respect and tolerance within diverse communities.
During the visit, pupils were shown how Muslims pray, with demonstrations inside the mosque helping to explain daily worship and the importance of the Qur’an. They were also given an insight into wudu, the ritual washing performed before prayer, as part of understanding the wider customs of Islamic life.
Staff at the centre welcomed the pupils and answered questions, giving them the opportunity to explore a different culture in a relaxed and engaging environment.
Teachers say these kind of experiences help bring classroom learning to life, allowing pupils to better understand the beliefs and traditions of others.
The Hamad Bin Khalifa Islamic Centre has become an important hub for the local Muslim community and regularly supports educational visits aimed at building understanding and respect across different faiths.
Milford Haven and Neyland Police said the visit was “excellent learning about Ramadan and different cultures,” with PCSO 8090 Adam also attending on the day.

Five takeaways from Markwayne Mullin's Homeland Security confirmation hearing
March 19, 2026
Ana Faguy
Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin promised a "better approach" on immigration enforcement and, despite recent criticism of the Homeland Security department, pledged that as its leader he would be "protecting everybody".
The senator's remarks came as he was questioned by colleagues considering his nomination to lead the DHS following Kristi Noem's departure earlier this month.
Reopening the department amid the partial government shutdown, potential growth of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) centres across the US, and ICE's use of judicial warrants all came up during the three-hour hearing. Mullin is vying for the job as the DHS enters its fifth week without funding, and concerns surrounding a lack of pay for workers loomed during questioning.
The committee expects a vote on Thursday on Mullin's nomination which would move to a full Senate vote next. Here are five takeaways from the hearing.
Mullin regrets Alex Pretti remarks
Many questions from senators focused on ICE and opposition the agency has faced in the wake of increased federal immigration efforts in cities across the US, particularly those led by Democrats.
A few Democratic senators mentioned that Mullin was answering questions before the committee because of criticism of his predecessor, Noem.
Michigan Senator Gary Peters, a Democrat, pressed Mullin on his comments about Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old man who was shot and killed in January by federal immigration officials in Minneapolis.
The Oklahoma senator previously said Pretti was deranged and was attempting to do maximum damage when he approached federal agents.
On Wednesday, Mullin said he regreted his comments, but he would not apologise to Pretti's family until the investigation into the incident is complete.
Mullin said he would not make similar comments as Homeland Security secretary.
"I can have different opinions with everybody in this room, but as secretary of homeland I'll be protecting everybody," Mullin said. "My goal in six months is that we're not in the lead story every single day."
DHS shutdown on everyone's minds
The DHS has gone without funding since February, after Congress failed to reach a funding agreement. President Donald Trump's administration blamed delays on Democrats, who declined to pass funding without immigration reforms.
That disagreement was on full display at Mullin's hearing.
"We have to realize that we're putting our homeland and the peace of mind at risk for the American people," Mullin said of the shutdown.
"Sometimes it's political theater, sometimes it's true differences. But what we do know is that we're playing with fire. We have 280,000 employees right now that are on day 30 without pay, and they're still showing up every single day to do their job."
Repeatedly, Republicans used their time to admonish Democrats for shutting down DHS, as thousands of TSA workers go without paycheques.
Democrats, however, said they offered to fund certain parts of DHS, including TSA, should reforms surrounding ICE be agreed to.
Transportation Security Administration workers missed their first full paycheck on Friday, but they are required to continue working as they are considered essential workers. They may receive back pay or compensation once the shutdown ends.
More than 300 TSA employees have quit, DHS said on Friday, and the BBC's US partner, CBS News, found call-out rates have more than doubled since the funding lapse began.
What would ICE look like on Mullin's watch?
Democrats zeroed in on how ICE has operated during Noem's tenure and how Mullin's time may be different.
Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, asked Mullin about securing judicial warrants before entering homes or businesses - a major issue in Trump's mass deportation drive.
Mullin said he has made it "very clear" to Homeland Security staff that judicial warrants will be used to enter properties unless agents are actively pursuing someone inside.
Blumenthal asserted that, according to a whistleblower, ICE agents have been instructed to break into homes and Mullin pushed back, accusing Blumenthal of using the term break in "loosely".
At other points in the hearing, Mullin was asked how he would decide if an ICE holding facility should be built in a community.
Senator Andy Kim, a New Jersey Democrat, asked Mullin if he would consult with communities before opening planned detention centres for immigrants.
These facilities are operated by ICE, which falls under DHS.
Mullin said it's important to talk to the communities, then suggested that he would call the mayor and personally visit a town, which Kim references, where a facility is planned.
Fellow Republican snubs Mullin
The hearing started out with a verbal tussle between the committee chair, Republican Rand Paul, of Kentucky, and Mullin.
Paul jumped straight into remarks surrounding political violence in the US, specifically an attack Paul himself faced, where he was attacked and had six of his ribs broken by a neighbour in 2017.
Mullin previously said he understood why the neighbour attacked Paul. The senator offered Mullin an opportunity to apologise, which Mullin ignored.
"I wonder if someone who applauds violence against their political opponents is the right person to lead an agency that has struggled to accept limits to the proper use of force," Paul said in his opening statement.
Throughout the hearing, Paul attacked Mullin and his character.
"Explain to the American public why they should trust a man with anger issues to set the proper example for ICE and border patrol agents," Paul said.
Mullin pushed back throughout the hearing and at one point said it "seems like you fight Republicans more than you work with us".
"Let me earn your respect, let me earn the job," he said to Paul.
Paul appeared unlikely to support moving Mullin's nomination out of committee, but because Senator John Fetterman, a Pennsylvania Democrat, said he would back Mullin's nomination, there should be enough votes to advance the nomination.
A feud comes to an end
Mullin is known on Capitol Hill for not holding back, a style of speaking that some describe as combative.
The former mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter nearly got into a physical altercation in the past with one former adversary - and so people in the room were surprised when that same man showed up in the front row at the hearing.
Sean O'Brien, president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, one of the country's biggest unions, verbally attacked Mullin at a 2023 hearing, calling him a "greedy CEO who pretends like he's self-made".
At the time, Mullin stood up, seemingly to fight the union leader.
Though the fight never happened, the interaction went viral and Mullin repeatedly stood by his behaviour.
On Wednesday, O'Brien was in the front row at the hearing. When Mullin walked to the dais, he shook only one hand: O'Brien's.
The two are now friends, Mullin said during the hearing.

United States holds interest rates as Iran war triggers inflation fears
March 19, 2026
Natalie Sherman
The US central bank has voted to hold interest rates steady again, as a spike in oil prices since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran raises economic uncertainty and threatens to drive up inflation.
The decision, which was widely expected, left the Federal Reserve's key interest rate in the range of 3.5%-3.75%, where it has stood since December.
Despite pressure from US President Donald Trump to slash borrowing costs, policymakers have been moving cautiously, as they face a tricky combination of rising prices and mixed signals from the job market.
Analysts say the war has made them even less likely to cut, with markets now pushing back the chance of a rate cut happening into next year.
Forecasts released after the meeting showed a majority of Fed board members still expect to cut interest rates at least once this year, with five now expecting rates could fall below 3%.
Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell said future cuts would depend on whether inflation continues to fall, noting that it was "too soon" to say how the Iran war would affect that outlook.
"We just don't know what the effects of this will be and really no one does," he said.
The Fed typically lowers borrowing costs when it sees unemployment rising and wants to boost the economy. It raises them when it is worried about inflation, hoping higher borrowing costs will ease spending and slow down price rises.
But an economic picture muddied in part by abrupt policy changes, such as tariffs, has made it difficult for policymakers to agree on which problem to prioritise.
The war in Iran is the latest, triggering a spike in oil prices that has already driven up gas prices in the US to the highest since 2024.
While that is likely to drive up prices more widely, at least temporarily, it also risks slowing the economy, as households have less money to spend on other things.
Fed board members now expect inflation to end the year at 2.7%, up from the 2.4% they were predicting in December.
Powell said that increase was due to the "oil shock" and concerns that the US has not yet seen the last of price rises triggered by the tariffs Trump put in place last year.
Meanwhile, board members on average are forecasting economic growth of 2.4%, up slightly from 2.3% in December, while predicting the unemployment rate will hold steady at 4.4%, as previously predicted.
Powell said the Trump administration's crackdown on immigration, which has slowed population growth and reduced the size of the workforce, meant companies did not need to hire as many people to keep unemployment down.
But he acknowledged concerns, saying that it was "not a really comfortable balance".
"That's balance but it does have a feel of downside risk," he said.
Powell said the next six weeks would be critical to understanding how the world's largest economy evolves.
His term as chair is due to end in May. But Powell said he would stay on as chair until Trump's choice to replace him is confirmed.
Senators have threatened to block Kevin Warsh's confirmation until a Department of Justice investigation into cost overruns at a Fed renovation is resolved.
Powell said he would remain on the board at least until the investigation concludes, even if he has stepped down as chair.
He said he had not yet decided whether he would remain on after, saying he would make that decision based on what he thought was "best for the institution" at that point.

United States judge orders Donald Trump administration to reopen Voice of America
Paulin Kola
March 19, 2026
A judge in the US has ruled that the effective closure of the Voice of America (VOA) last year was "illegal" and that hundreds of its journalists should be reinstated.
District Court Judge Royce Lamberth has given authorities one week to put the international broadcaster back on air.
The VOA was set up during World War Two to counter Nazi propaganda.
Just weeks after returning to office as president, Donald Trump issued an executive order to close the broadcaster which his officials accused of left-wing bias. Trump also ordered outlets such as Radio Free Europe and Radio Free Asia to be "eliminated to the maximum extent consistent with applicable law".
The president appointed Kari Lake to head the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM) - the parent company that oversees and funds the VOA as well as Radio Free Europe and Radio Free Asia.
Lake proceeded to sack more than 85% of the agency's employees - more than 1,000 staff at VOA alone - leaving just a handful of employees in their jobs.
Most have been on paid administrative leave since last year, including Persian Service reporters who were called back to work after Israel attacked Iran last June.
Last week, Judge Lamberth ruled that Lake did not have authority to order the suspension of the USAGM workforce as she had not been confirmed by the US Senate.
In Tuesday's ruling, the federal judge described the decision to sack the journalists as "arbitrary and capricious," adding that the government had not taken into account legislation that determines what languages and regions the VOA must serve.
"Defendants have provided nothing approaching a principled basis for their decision," Lamberth wrote.
Three VOA journalists had sued the Trump administration. One of them, Patsy Widakuswara, said she was deeply grateful for the judge's decision.
"We hope the American people will continue to support our mission to produce journalism, not propaganda," she told the Associated Press news agency.
It is not clear if Lake's nominated successor, Sarah Rogers - whose appointment needs Senate confirmation - will appeal.
Before being wound down, the VOA broadcast TV, radio and digital content in almost 50 languages.
Trump's criticisms of the VOA form part of his broader attacks against the US media, which studies suggest American news consumers view as highly polarised.

Juliana Stratton wins Illinois Democratic primary for US Senate
Brandon Drenon
March 19, 2026
Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton is the predicted winner of the Democratic primary for US Senate, edging out her opponents after a late surge of support in a highly competitive, expensive race.
Stratton was leading her main opponent, congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, with roughly 90% of the vote tallied on Tuesday night, according to the Associated Press.
"We did it," Stratton said of her surprise win. "Tonight we showed what's possible when you listen to the people and give the people what they want."
Stratton is predicted to beat her Republican opponent in November's midterm election, replacing the incumbent Democrat, Senator Dick Durbin.
Durbin, 81, will retire next year after serving five terms in the US Senate.
Her victory on Tuesday came after months of trailing in the polls but she received an endorsement and a reportedly $12m cash injection from billionaire governor of Illinois, JB Pritzker.
Stratton sprung ahead by digging into her opposition of Trump's immigration enforcement, directly calling for the abolishment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Krishnamoorthi took a more measured stance in comparison, calling for the abolishment of "Trump's ICE".
In her victory speech in Chicago, Stratton said: "Courage inspired me to run. Courage powered this campaign and courage will bring this fight straight to Donald Trump's front door."
Turnout for this year's Senate race was unusually high for a non-presidential year, with over 1.1 million votes tallied in the Democratic primary – on pace to exceed the 2004 primary, when Barack Obama was running for Senate.
If Stratton is elected, she would become the sixth black woman to serve in the Senate in its 237 years.
It would also be the first time three black women served in the Senate at the same time, as she would join Angela Alsobrooks and Lisa Rochester.

United States vastly underestimating the cost of Iran war – The Intercept
18 Mar, 2026
The financial cost of the Iran war to American taxpayers is being understated by officials and could balloon into the trillions of dollars over the long term, The Intercept has warned.
The US military budget, the world’s largest, surpassed $830 billion for fiscal year 2026. President Donald Trump has boasted that the regime-change campaign in Tehran could be waged “forever” using the Pentagon’s current munition stockpiles, though skeptics say weapons depletion is a major issue.
On Wednesday, The Intercept contrasted estimates of Operation Epic Fury provided by Trump administration officials with figures from experts, lawmakers, and two government officials interviewed on condition of anonymity.
The $12 billion estimate given on Sunday by Trump economic adviser Kevin Hassett does not account for the cost of the buildup in the Middle East that preceded the US-Israeli attack in late February, the outlet stated. A three-week war would directly cost between $60 billion and $130 billion, rising to $250 billion if it extends to eight weeks, government sources told the outlet.
Lawmakers expect the administration to add at least $50 billion to the $1.5 trillion War Department budget request for fiscal year 2027.
Long-term expenses – including veteran’s benefits and interest on additional debt – could push the total into trillions, similar to the Iraq War, the report stressed. The George W. Bush administration initially estimated the cost of toppling Saddam Hussein at $40 billion, but independent assessments put the figure at around $8 trillion by 2021.
US national debt is approaching $39 trillion, up from $38 trillion last October, according to Treasury data. Trump campaigned for president by promising not to start costly new wars and instead reduce debt by cutting wasteful government spending.
This week, Joe Kent, head of the US National Counterterrorism Center, resigned in protest against the Iran war. He said that contrary to Trump’s assertions, Iran “posed no imminent threat to our nation” and that the attack was launched “due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.”

LG deepens Ramadan outreach, supports muslim faithful with Iftar, rewards
19 March 2026
LG Electronics has reaffirmed its commitment to community engagement and shared prosperity as Muslim faithful across Nigeria observe the holy month of Ramadan, rolling out a series of outreach and customer-focused initiatives.
Under its annual “Share The Life’s Good” campaign, the company organised Iftar outreaches in mosques and community centres across major cities, providing meals to fasting Muslims and promoting the values of unity, compassion and generosity that define the season.
Ramadan, widely regarded as a period of spiritual reflection and devotion, also presents an opportunity for individuals and organisations to strengthen social bonds. LG’s intervention aligns with these ideals by supporting families with nourishment and fostering a sense of togetherness during the fasting period.
Managing Director of LG Electronics, Mr. Hyoung Sub Ji, described Ramadan as a time that reinforces human connection and shared purpose.
“Ramadan is a sacred period marked by prayer, fasting and reflection. It brings people closer and reinforces the importance of kindness and community. Through our ‘Share The Life’s Good’ initiative, we are proud to support families and deepen our connection with consumers during this special time,” he said.
Also speaking, the company’s Public Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, Moses Osime, noted that LG expanded its Ramadan activities beyond community outreach to include in-store engagements and curated experiences such as special Iftar gatherings for customers and partners.
As part of the campaign, the company also rewarded customers through its Ramadan double-digit promotion, offering appliances, shopping vouchers and gift items to consumers who purchased LG products during the period. The initiative, according to the firm, was designed to encourage patronage while extending the spirit of giving.
Osime added that LG leveraged multiple platforms during Ramadan to engage Muslim faithful, providing support ranging from practical meal preparation solutions to inspirational content tailored to the season.
With long fasting hours necessitating proper nourishment, the company highlighted the role of its home appliances in easing meal preparation. It also collaborated with influencers and culinary experts to develop nutritious recipes, demonstrating how its kitchen solutions can assist families in preparing balanced Sahur and Iftar meals.
“Ramadan gives us the privilege to celebrate community, and LG is proud to be part of that story,” he added.
Through the initiative, LG said it aims to strengthen its relationship with Nigerian consumers by delivering not only innovative products but also meaningful experiences that reflect the true spirit of Ramadan,

‘No Retreat, No Surrender’ – Malami Breaks Silence After Release From Custody, Hails Atiku, Obi
March 19, 2026
Former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, has expressed gratitude to his family, political allies, and supporters following his release from custody over alleged corruption-related charges.
Malami, alongside his wife, Bashir Asabe, and son, Abdulaziz, is facing a 16-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The former minister, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, was initially remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre before being rearrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on January 19 shortly after his release.
He had earlier accused the DSS of denying him access to his family and legal team while in custody.
On February 27, a Federal High Court in Abuja granted Malami and his son bail in the sum of ₦200 million each over alleged terrorism-related offences.
‘Difficult Period’ — Malami
In a message issued through his media aide, Mohammed Doka, and shared on his Facebook page, Malami described his ordeal as a “difficult period.”
“I extend my profound and heartfelt gratitude to my family, friends, political associates, and countless well-meaning Nigerians who stood firm with me,” he said.
He noted that their support helped him withstand what he described as “media trials, sensational narratives, and prejudgment.”
Malami also acknowledged several prominent political figures for their support, including former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar; ex-Kaduna governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai; former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Others he mentioned include former Sokoto governor, Aminu Tambuwal, as well as Kashim Imam, Lawal Batagarawa, Lauretta Onochie, and Bolaji Abdullahi.
He described their interventions as courageous and principled.
Despite regaining his freedom, Malami said his focus has shifted to broader national issues, urging Nigerians to unite in the pursuit of justice and accountability.
“The struggle for justice, accountability, and national redemption is only just beginning,” he stated.
He warned that Nigeria was facing a critical moment, calling for courageous leadership and active citizen participation.
Malami urged Nigerians to remain resolute in defending democratic values.
“Let it be clearly understood that the struggle is just beginning… No retreat, no surrender,” he added.

Army Releases Video Of How 63 Terrorists Were Neutralised In Borno
March 18, 2026
By Justina Otio
The Nigerian Army has released a video evidence confirming the neutralisation of 63 terrorists suspected to be Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters in Mallam Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State.
Naija News reported that at least sixty terrorists responsible for chaos in the northern region of Nigeria were reportedly killed in a recent decisive assault by the troops of Operation Hadin Kai of the Nigerian Army.
In a statement posted on its official 𝕏 handle, the Nigerian Army Headquarters said the insurgents invaded the area from the Duguri on foot, supported by multiple armed drones but were successfully repelled by the troops.
The statement noted that the troops have “since commenced exploitation operations to pursue and eliminate the fleeing terrorists, while Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance platforms are being deployed to dominate the adversary’s withdrawal routes and prevent regrouping”.
In the video several lifeless bodies of the terrorists could be seen lying at the scene.
It is worth noting that numerous insurgents causing terror in the North-East have been eliminated by the military in recent days.
Earlier this week, a significant number of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants were killed by the troops in New Marte, located in the Marte local government area of Borno State.

Christopher Musa, Olufemi Oluyede Obey Bola Tinubu’sOrder, Relocate To Borno
March 18, 2026
By Oladipo Abiola
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu, on Wednesday arrived in Borno State, folowing the recent terrorist attack in the Northern state.
Naija News understands that the military chiefs arrived at Maiduguri Air Force Base and proceeded straight to the Theatre Command Headquarters Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI.
At the Air Force Base, the service chiefs were received by the theatre commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, and other top military brass at about 11 am.
After mounting the Guard of Honour at the Maimalari Military Cantonment in Maiduguri, the service chiefs went into a closed-door meeting.
The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is also said to have arrived in Maiduguri.
It would be recalled that following the recent bomb attacks in Maiduguri, President Bola Tinubu had ordered the service chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, to nip the crisis.
The President described the attacks as the “final desperate and frantic attempts” by terrorists who are increasingly under pressure from Nigerian security forces.
Tinubu emphasised that security forces would continue to intensify operations against criminal and terrorist groups across the country.
As part of measures to address the situation, Tinubu said he had ordered security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri to coordinate operations on the ground.
He also disclosed that during a security meeting held with leaders of the nation’s intelligence and security agencies last weekend, he approved additional operational support and equipment to strengthen the fight against insurgency.

Singapore University of Technology and Design and Mendaki to partner on design, AI training for Malay/Muslim community
Mar 18, 2026
SINGAPORE – The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and community self-help group Mendaki will collaborate in providing training and skills development opportunities in design and artificial intelligence for the Malay/Muslim community.
This will start with 200 Mendaki staff, who will participate in the two-day SUTD-Yayasan Mendaki Generative AI Professional Course. The programme aims to introduce how AI can be used to support Mendaki officers in their work, improve productivity, better manage day-to-day responsibilities and enhance service delivery to the community.
The tie-up is part of a three-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by SUTD and Mendaki on March 18 to collaborate on initiatives in AI, design and applied learning.
The partnership aims to equip the Malay/Muslim community with relevant skills, applied learning opportunities and AI-driven capabilities.
Under the agreement, SUTD and Mendaki will also work on joint research and collaborative projects, and support SUTD’s student initiatives, including Capstone and Design Studio projects that work on community challenges.
The partnership will also see Malay/Muslim individuals participating in SUTD’s programmes, and SUTD employees and students joining Mendaki’s programmes. This aims to facilitate knowledge exchange, raising community awareness while strengthening digital capabilities and fostering innovation within the Malay/Muslim community.
In his Budget 2026 speech on Feb 12, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong underscored that Singapore must harness AI as a strategic advantage so it does not fall behind in a rapidly changing world, and ensure that AI serves Singapore’s national interests and people.
“Harnessed well, AI will be a strategic advantage for Singapore. It can help us overcome our structural constraints – our limited natural resources, rapidly ageing population and tight labour market,” PM Wong had said.
By combining Mendaki’s strong community reach with SUTD’s expertise in technology, innovation and applied design, the partnership seeks to translate academic and industry expertise into real-world impact, said the organisations in a joint statement on March 18.
The partnership supports Mendaki’s five-year work plan in building a future-ready workforce, and contributes to Langkah Digital, an initiative led by Mendaki to promote AI adoption and digital literacy within the community.
The MOU was signed by SUTD’s deputy president and chief innovation and enterprise officer Tai Lee Siang and Mendaki chief executive Feroz Akber at an event held at SUTD.
Speaking to the media at the event, Mendaki chairman Zaqy Mohamad said Mendaki has a role to help the Malay/Muslim community understand AI to ensure they are not afraid to use AI and can remain competitive.
Mr Zaqy, who is also Senior Minister of State for Defence, and Sustainability and the Environment, said the collaboration will encourage other Malay/Muslim organisations to come on board, embrace AI and help the community gain confidence to use AI.
The SUTD-Yayasan Mendaki Generative AI Professional Course is conducted by SUTD’s adult learning arm, SUTD Academy. The academy has been working with organisations over the past year to build practical AI capabilities, running over 125 AI-related courses with close to 3,700 participants from April 2025 to January 2026.
Mendaki had also signed an MOU with Quantedge Foundation in December 2025 to integrate Luminee, an AI-powered adaptive learning system, into its Mendaki Achievement Programme, formerly known as the Mendaki Tuition Programme.
Luminee, a platform for students, combines diagnostic quizzes with interactive activities to adjust question difficulty and pinpoint learning gaps for each student, provide targeted feedback and track progress more effectively.
Tutors supervise students as they navigate the platform and provide closer guidance to those who require more support. The platform was rolled out in February to 445 Primary 5 pupils for core subjects, including English, mathematics and science.
To study the impact of the programme, Mendaki will collaborate with the Singapore University of Social Sciences on a two-year evaluation involving up to 890 Primary 5 pupils.
The study will provide insights into how AI-enabled personalised learning impacts pupil outcomes and explore how tutors can best support programme delivery.
Mr Zaqy said of the programme: “I’ve seen tutors who now say they spend a fraction of the time preparing classes and can spend more time thinking about how to make their engagements more effective and creative.”
He added that the AI platforms motivate students and give them more confidence in learning.

United States Navy ships’ Penang stop was routine and approved
18 Mar 2026
The recent US Navy vessels’ stop in Penang was a routine, government-approved port call for logistics and crew rest, says Defence Minister.
KUALA LUMPUR: The recent presence of two United States Navy vessels in Penang was a routine port of call for logistical purposes that had received official approval from the Malaysian government.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said USS Santa Barbara and USS Tulsa docked at the North Butterworth Container Terminal from March 14 to 16.
He said the stopover enabled the vessels to carry out replenishment, maintenance and provide rest for crew members before continuing their voyage.
“Port of call visits by foreign naval vessels at Malaysian ports are not new and have long been part of established international defence relations.”
Mohamed Khaled added that Malaysia has clear procedures where every docking request must go through official channels and is subject to government approval.
He said such visits are part of efforts to enhance confidence-building measures while safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The practice is also in line with the Defence White Paper to ensure regional stability and global peace.
Malaysia received a total of 75 visits by foreign naval vessels from 14 countries throughout 2025.
Among the countries that have made port calls in Malaysia are Australia, China, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Indonesia, Singapore and the United States.

On Sunday, weather conditions are expected to be generally fair nationwide in the morning and at night.
Light rain is forecast for parts of Sabah and Sarawak in the afternoon.
Arthur advised those planning visits or open house gatherings to prioritise safety and health.

For those travelling back to their hometowns, he reminded them to ensure their vehicles are in good condition.
He also urged the public to stay alert to afternoon thunderstorm warnings to avoid risks such as flash floods or slippery roads.
Parents are advised to monitor their children’s outdoor activities, especially in the event of sudden weather changes.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 — The police claimed that activist Tamim Dahri Abdul Razak may have fled to Saudi Arabia and are actively tracking his whereabouts, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said today.
He said checks indicated Tamim had travelled to Thailand and is now believed to be in Saudi Arabia.
“Our records show he had gone to Thailand, but we have also received information that he may currently be in the Holy Land.
“Action to charge him in court has already been taken, and when the time comes, we will take the necessary steps to bring him in to face the charges,” he told a press conference at Bukit Aman here.
Earlier this week, Mohd Khalid confirmed that four individuals — including Zamri Vinoth and activist Arun Dorasamy — would be charged in connection with alleged religious provocation.
The other two named were Tamim and P. Mahendra Boopathy.
Tamim is set to be charged at the Langkawi Magistrates’ Court under Section 295 of the Penal Code for allegedly damaging a soolam — a sacred symbol for Hindus — at the former site of the Sri Maha Muniswarar temple in Langkawi, Kedah.
The case involving Tamim, 34, was previously postponed after the accused was found to be abroad.
Magistrate Hemy Annerina Haja Mydin has fixed May 17 for mention following an application by the prosecution to defer proceedings.
