Communal clashes erupt in MP's Jabalpur after Hindu activists allege conversion by Christian missionaries
22 Dec 2025

Image used for representational purposes only.File Photo
----------
BHOPAL: Police are on heightened alert in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur city, after protests by Hindu right-wingers alleging religious conversion by Christian missionaries triggered violent scuffles between the two religious groups at two separate places in two successive days.
The first incident happened in Gorakhpur police station area on Saturday, while the second incident happened in the Madhotal police station area on Sunday.
The first incident happened behind the premises of a Church near the Hawabagh College under the limits of Gorakhpur police station, when Bajrang Dal activists clashed with members of a group that had organised a Christmas lunch event for visually challenged students. Bajrang Dal activists stopped the event, questioning how the school’s students had been brought there for lunch without permission from the school staff.
Police rushed to the spot and stopped the violent scuffle from snowballing.
Though neither side had filed police complaints, the Jabalpur district administration has ordered a probe into the activities of the group that had organised the lunch event as part of Christmas celebrations.
The students, however, rubbished the religious conversion allegations made by the Bajrang Dal activists.
The second incident happened on Sunday in Shakti Nagar locality under Madhotal area of Jabalpur.
According to circle SP (CSP-Madhotal) BS Gathoria, Hindu right-wingers came to the concerned place in Shakti Nagar, claiming that they had received information about religious conversion being carried out by the Christian missionaries at a Sunday religious prayer.
The two groups clashed before the police rushed to the spot and prevented the matter from escalating.
Both sides have submitted complaints at the Madhotal police station, after which the police have started investigations into both complaints.

Syrian security forces dismantle Daesh terror cell near Damascus
December 21, 2025

ISF crack down on weapons smuggling and terror cells. (SANA)
------------
LONDON: Syrian internal security units dismantled a cell of the Daesh terror group in the Daraya area southwest of Damascus on Sunday.
Authorities, in coordination with the General Intelligence Directorate, raided a Daesh hideout and arrested several militants.
Syria and the United States have accused the terror group of carrying out a deadly ambush earlier this month that resulted in the deaths of three Americans and injuries to two Syrian service personnel in Palmyra, in central Syria.
Brig. Gen. Ahmad al-Dalati, head of internal security in the Damascus countryside, announced that the operation resulted in the dismantling of the cell and the arrest of a Daesh leader, along with six other members. Several weapons and ammunition were also seized, he added.
He said the operation is part of the interior ministry’s broader strategy to eliminate terrorist sources, avert threats to community security, and maintain peace and stability in the country, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported.
On Friday, the US military launched large-scale retaliatory strikes and group operations against Daesh targets and operatives in Syria.

Bondi Beach shooting suspects met religious leaders during Philippines visit, probe on
Jason Gutierrez

Items lie on the sand following the attack on a Jewish holiday celebration at Sydney's Bondi Beach, in Sydney, Australia, December 15, 2025.
Reuters
-------------
The father-and-son attackers accused of carrying out the deadly shooting on Australia’s famous Bondi Beach appeared to have met with local Muslim religious leaders during their sojourn to the Philippines last month, intelligence authorities said on Sunday.
Sajid Akram and his son, Naveed, slipped out of the southern city of Davao to visit Muslim religious leaders in the city of Panabo, an agricultural community about 32km to the north, during their monthlong stay in November, the authorities said. Who specifically they met in the area and what was discussed are still being investigated, they added.
The suspects’ stay in Davao just ahead of their rampage on Bondi Beach in Sydney, killing 15 people at a Hanukkah celebration, has raised questions about a possible resurgence of militancy in the southern Philippines. Australian officials have described the December 14 attack as an act of terrorism inspired by Islamic State ideology.
Davao is the largest city on the island of Mindanao, the country’s southern hub, which is home to a smattering of long-simmering Islamist insurgencies, some involving groups that claim loyalty to the Islamic State.
Initial information about the Akrams, provided by Australian counterterrorism experts, said that the two had been inspired by the Islamic State and were reported to have travelled to the Philippines for training. On Wednesday, the National Security Council in the Philippines said that it was unable to confirm whether the men had "received any form of training in the Philippines".
The Philippine National Police regional director, Brig. Gen. Leon Victor Rosete, said in a statement on Sunday that officers in Davao had "examined any activities they may have conducted during their stay, including identifying the individuals they interacted with, and assessing possible links or support networks".
Local police, backed by intelligence operatives in coordination with the Australian intelligence agency, are conducting "backtracking operations to establish their movements during their stay", he said. “This included the review of CCTV footage, hotel records, travel data and other available intelligence information,” he said, stressing that intelligence gathering was continuing.
PM booed
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was booed by an angry crowd gathered at the famous Bondi beach on Sunday to honour the victims of the gun attack a week earlier that targeted a seaside Jewish Hanukkah festival event.
The nation marked a day of reflection on Sunday to honour the 15 people killed and the dozens wounded in the attack by two gunmen. With security tight and flags at half-staff on government buildings, a minute of silence was held at 6.47pm (local time), the time the attack began.

'What about your Hindu wife Usha?': Row over JD Vance saying US will always be a Christian nation
Dec 22, 2025

Vice president JD Vance once again stirred a row after asserting at the Turning Point USA AmericaFest event that the United States is and always will be a Christian nation.
Speaking to the mostly Republican crowd, Vance said, “The only thing that is truly served as an anchor of the United States of America is that we have been, and by the grace of God, we always will be, a Christian nation.” The MAGA audience responded with loud applause and cheers.
The remarks come after Vance said in October that he hopes his wife, Usha Vance, who was raised in a Hindu family may convert into Christianity. Speaking at one older Turning Point USA event, Vance said he hopes she may one day embrace Christianity, but said that faith must be freely chosen. He had said: “Now most Sundays Usha will come with me to church… Do I hope, eventually, that she is somehow moved by the same thing that I was moved in by church? Yeah, I honestly do wish that because I believe in the Christian gospel and I hope eventually my wife comes to see it the same way.”
These comments had ignited a firestorm within the MAGA base and divided conservatives on how a White nationalist Christian leader can have a Brown Hindu and Indian wife.
Democrats, progressives, and American Hindu groups condemned the statements and said they were insensitive to Usha’s religious identity and showed elements of forceful Christian nationalist rhetoric. Hindu American Foundation said that sharing faith in a marriage should be mutual rather than one-sided.
Vance shut down the false rumours and responded on social media that Usha has "no plans to convert." He called the backlash “disgusting” and described it as anti-Christian bigotry. He said that he loves his wife, Usha, and reiterated that he respects her beliefs.
Vance has openly discussed how Usha supported him when he returned to faith, as both were once agnostic before he converted to Catholicism in 2019. He has credited her and her Indian-origin family’s values with influencing his spiritual journey.
However, the comments were not appreciated on social media when users pointed out the irony of how a GOP leader can preach about a Christian nation while having a Hindu wife.

2025 Review: List Of Major Terrorists Attacks In Nigeria
December 22, 2025
2025By George Oshogwe Ogbolu

Nigeria recorded a wave of deadly attacks across the country in 2025, with terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements killing more than 2,200 citizens within the first half of the year.
Findings show a sharp escalation of insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West and North-Central, as well as rising communal violence in parts of the Middle Belt and South-South.
The situation worsened toward the end of the year, with no fewer than 82 people reportedly killed in December alone.
According to Daily Post, more than two million Nigerians were abducted in 2025 for ransom or alleged organ harvesting, particularly in the North-West and North-Central regions.
Yelewata massacre shocks Benue
One of the deadliest attacks occurred on June 13, 2025, when armed men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen stormed the Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
Nearly 200 unarmed farmers and traders were massacred in a single night, plunging the country into mourning.
Earlier the same day, police reportedly repelled an attempt by the attackers to invade St. Joseph’s Church, where about 700 internally displaced persons were taking refuge.
However, the assailants later attacked the Yelewata market square, setting ablaze a building housing displaced persons before opening fire on an area where more than 500 people were asleep.
Several women and children were reportedly burnt alive in the attack.
Zamfara: 40 abductees killed despite ransom
In Zamfara State, at least 40 abducted villagers were killed by bandits on July 27, despite ransom payments made for their release.
The victims were among 56 people kidnapped in March from Banga village in Kauran Namoda Local Government Area.
The abductors reportedly demanded one million naira per captive. While 16 victims were eventually released, the remaining abductees, including pregnant women, were killed.
Boko Haram strikes Borno border community
On September 3, fighters of Boko Haram attacked Darul Jamal community, located near the Nigeria-Cameroon border in Borno State.
The attack left over 80 people dead, including five soldiers stationed at a nearby military base.
The assault occurred shortly after residents returned to the village following years of displacement.
The Nigerian Air Force later carried out air strikes that reportedly killed at least 30 of the attackers.
Plateau records over 150 deaths
Plateau State recorded no fewer than 150 deaths from multiple attacks in 2025.
In January, gunmen attacked Mangu town, killing about 30 residents.
Another attack in April on the Bokko District claimed at least 53 lives and displaced over 2,000 people.
In June, several communities in Riyom Local Government Area were attacked, leaving at least 58 people dead and displacing about 15,000 residents.
Bandits raid Kebbi school
On November 17, bandits attacked the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The attackers abducted 24 schoolgirls during the late-night raid.
The school’s vice principal, Malam Hassan Yakubu Makuku, was killed while reportedly attempting to protect the students.
All 24 abducted students were later released following intervention by security agencies.
Worshippers killed in Kwara church attack
Terrorists also struck in Kwara State on November 18, attacking a branch of the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku town, Ekiti Local Government Area.
At least eight worshippers were killed, while several others, including the resident pastor, were abducted.
A video of the attack showed the assailants opening fire during a church meeting and whisking more than 50 people away, triggering nationwide fear and reduced attendance at public gatherings.
Niger school abduction sparks outrage
Another major incident occurred on November 21, when gunmen abducted 303 students and 12 teachers from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State.
The attackers arrived on motorcycles around 2:00 a.m., moving from dormitory to dormitory before leading their captives into nearby forests.
The abduction triggered widespread outrage and renewed concerns over school safety nationwide.
Fifty pupils reportedly escaped during the attack, while the remaining victims were later released in batches. All abducted students and teachers regained their freedom by December 21.

Asim Munir says he felt 'divine intervention' during Operation Sindoor; asks Afghanistan to choose between Pakistan and TTP
Dec 22, 2025
NEW DELHI: Pakistan’s chief of defence forces field marshal Asim Munir has claimed that Islamabad received “divine help” during the military confrontation with India in May, while also asking Afghanistan’s Taliban regime to choose between Pakistan and the Tehrik i Taliban Pakistan, PTI reported.
Addressing the National Ulema Conference in Islamabad, Munir in a widely circulated video said Pakistan’s armed forces experienced “divine intervention” during the four day conflict triggered after India launched Operation Sindoor. “We felt it,” he said.
India carried out Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. The strikes led to intense clashes between the two countries for four days and ended with an understanding to halt military actions on May 10.
Meanwhile, Munir warned the Afghan Taliban to choose between Pakistan and the TTP, saying Afghan nationals form the majority of militants infiltrating across the border. “In the TTP formations coming [into Pakistan], 70 per cent are Afghans,” he said. “Is Afghanistan not spilling the blood of our Pakistani children?” He reiterated that Kabul must decide between Pakistan and the TTP.
The Field Marshal also said that no one could declare jihad in an Islamic state except the state itself. “No one can issue a fatwa for jihad without the order and permission and will of those vested with the authority,” he said.
Munir also drew parallels between Pakistan and the state established by the Prophet 1,400 years ago in the Arab region, now Saudi Arabia.
He said that among the world’s 57 Islamic countries, “God gave us the honour of being the protectors of Haramain Sharifain,” referring to Makkah and Madina.
Official details of the December 10 address were limited, with selected clips aired later by Pakistani media.

Bangladesh lynching shocker: Hindu man's co-workers joined Islamist mob to kill him
Dec 22, 2025
Just a timely call from the factory management to the police could have saved the life of Bangladeshi Hindu man Dipu Chandra Das, who was lynched and killed on Thursday (December 16) following vague allegations of blasphemy. But instead of calling the police and saving him, Das was forced to resign by his factory supervisors, pushed out of his workplace, and handed over to an enraged mob of Islamists that beat him to death, hung his body and set fire to it. His colleagues reportedly joined the mob in killing him.
Shocking details have emerged in the lynching of 27-year-old Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu garment factory worker in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, who was killed over unverified blasphemy claims. According to Bangladesh's Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police officials, Dipu was forced to resign by factory supervisors and then handed over to the mob, which brutally assaulted and killed him, hung his body on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, and set fire to it, according to reports in Bangladeshi media outlets.
Authorities said that no clear evidence had been found to substantiate the blasphemy allegations. A total of 12 people have been arrested so far, including factory officials and workers, after CCTV footage and videos of the incident were reviewed.
But investigators suggest the killing of Dipu Chandra Das was far from a sudden flare-up. It bore clear signs of planning. Spanning several hours, the sequence — from a forced resignation and delayed police alert to his eventual handover to an Islamist mob — points to a deliberate chain of actions rather than an impulsive act of violence.
Exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen on X suggested that the police might have been involved in Das's lynching and questioned who will bring the perpetrators of the murder to justice.
Dipu, married three years ago, leaves behind a one-and-a-half-year-old child.
The lynching occurred hours before widespread riots, protests, and violence by Islamists erupted in Bangladesh on Thursday, immediately after news of the anti-India radical leader Sharif Osman Hadi broke the same night. However, the mayhem that erupted across Bangladesh on Thursday night and continued on Friday, was the culmination of a series of anti-India remarks by multiple leaders, operating with impunity under the Islamist-backed Muhammad Yunus regime. During the violent protests, Indian diplomatic missions were targeted amid a wave of anti-India protests.
BANGLADESH HINDU MAN WAS FORCED TO RESIGN, THEN HANDED OVER TO ISLAMIST MOB
At a press conference in Mymensingh on Saturday, RAB-14 commander Naimul Hasan said the violence began inside the factory itself.
"The incident began around 4 pm. The factory floor in-charge forced him to resign and handed him over to an enraged mob... We arrested two factory officials because they did not hand him over to the police and failed to ensure his safety," Naimul Hasan was quoted as saying by Dhaka-based Prothom Alo.
Those arrested by the RAB include Mohammad Alamgir Hossain, the factory's floor in-charge, Mohammad Miraj Hossain Akon, the quality in-charge, and five factory workers. Three more individuals were arrested separately by the police.
"As it was the time for shift change, workers for another shift also gathered in front of the factory and local people joined as the news spread outside," reported The Daily Star.
"Around 8:45pm, the agitated people entered the factory, breaking open its pocket gate and took Dipu away from the security room, alleged the senior manager," it reported.
The report and the arrests make it evident that Das's colleagues from the factory were part of the mob that lynched him, hung his body and set fire to it.
BLASPHEMY CLAIMS ON BANGLADESH HINDU MAN VAGUE, NO EVIDENCE FOUND: AUTHORITIES
The RAB officials said the allegations that triggered the killing remain unclear.
"The issue of blasphemy is extremely vague. We tried to find out what he had actually said, but no one could clarify it," Naimul Hasan said.
He further added, "We are investigating whether there was any prior enmity. It has not yet been possible to identify with whom the incident initially began".
Rab officials confirmed arrests were made after reviewing video evidence and said further details would emerge following remand interrogation.
Dhaka-based newspaper The Daily Star reported that the incident coincided with the time for a shift change, when workers from the incoming shift gathered outside the factory, and local residents also assembled as news of the incident spread. Around 8:45 pm, agitated people broke open the pocket gate of the factory and took Dipu from the security room, where he was sheltered for safety.
Factory sources told the newspaper that Dipu was then dragged out of the premises, after which locals joined the assault, killing him on the spot and later setting his body on fire.
JUST A TIMELY CALL COULD HAVE SAVED BANGLADESHI HINDU MAN: POLICE
Police said factory authorities informed them of the escalating incident too late, despite the situation worsening for hours.
"I was informed about the incident around 8.00 pm. Immediately, we started running towards the spot, but it was too late," Md Farhad Hossain Khan, the superintendent of Industrial Police in Mymensingh told The Daily Star.
Describing the scene, he added, "Hundreds of people were on the road. When we reached the factory gate, we saw the body being carried by a furious mob towards the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway".
A massive traffic jam delayed law enforcement further. "A 10-kilometre traffic jam was created for nearly three hours, seriously obstructing our movement, Md Farhad Hossain Khan added.
"Just a timely call could have saved Dipu's life," the SP said pointedly.
FACTORY'S DEFENCE AND CONTRADICTIONS BANGLADESHI HINDU MAN'S BRUTAL KILLING
Factory officials have denied negligence, even as accounts differ sharply from law enforcement findings.
Sakib Mahmud, the senior manager of Pioneer Knitwears (BD) Ltd, where Dipu Chandra Das was employed, said, "A group of workers started protesting inside the factory around 5 pm, accusing Dipu of hurting religious sentiments".
He, however, admitted that "There was no proof of the allegations [of blasphemy]".
According to him, a "fake resignation" was arranged around 7.30 pm to pacify the Islamist mob that was going after Dipu's life. But the agitating workers did not bother, said Mahmud, according to The Daily Star.
Factory sources claimed Dipu was kept in a security room and police were informed at 8.00 pm, but by 8.45 pm, the agitated Islamists entered the factory, broke open the pocket gate, and took Dipu away.
Dipu was handed over to the mob despite it being clear he would be killed to save the factory from any attack.
"When the situation became volatile, he was forcibly pushed out of the factory to protect the factory," said Rab-14 company commander Md Samsuzzaman, adding, "No evidence was found that he wrote anything on Facebook that hurt religious sentiments".
BRUTAL KILLING OF BANGLADESHI HINDU MAN AND AFTERMATH
According to police and local sources, Dipu was beaten to death, his naked body hung at a highway median, and then set on fire.
After a post-mortem at Mymensingh Medical College, his body was cremated late Friday night.
While it was alleged that Dipu made derogatory remarks, there is no evidence, the police said. Even if he had said something, it could have been handled legally, Dipu's younger brother, Opu Chandra Das, who filed the case, said.
"Even if he had said something, and it was an offence, the matter could have been dealt with through legal channels. Instead, he was brutally murdered. I demand the terrorists who killed him by making false allegations be brought to book. At the same time, the question of how his family will survive must also be addressed," Opu told Prothom Alo.
The police said the three suspects arrested by them have been produced before court, with a request for remand, while RAB-held suspects would be handed over for further legal action. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to arrest everyone involved and determine whether the killing stemmed from false accusations, prior enmity, or organised incitement.
Going by what investigators indicated, the killing of Dipu Chandra Das was not spontaneous but appeared organised. It unfolded over several hours inside and outside the factory. The forced resignation, delayed police intimation, and the eventual handover of Dipu to the Islamist mob point to a coordinated chain of events and decisions rather than a sudden outburst.

Revanth’s proposal for hate speech bill is hypocritical: BJP in Telangana
December 21, 2025
The Telangana BJP Sunday came down heavily on Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for announcing that the state government will soon bring a bill against hate speeches in line with Karnataka. Stating that the hypocrisy was appalling, BJP state president N Ramchander Rao accused the Chief Minister of making divisive statements during elections to polarise votes.
Another BJP leader and Union minister of Coal, G Kishan Reddy, also wrote an open letter to the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, Sonia Gandhi and slammed the High Command for failing to conduct a review of the implementation of the party’s manifesto in Telangana.
At a state government-organised programme for Christian minorities ahead of Christmas, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had announced that his government would soon bring in an anti-hate speech legislation, claiming that everyone should have the freedom to follow his or her religion. He also promised the minorities that their rights would be protected.
Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao called the Chief Minister’s claims absurd. He said, “Mr Revanth Reddy made a statement that he is going to bring a bill against hate speech. It is very surprising because he himself actually provoked the people on the communal line. During the last Jubilee Hills byelections, he said Muslims are Congress, and Congress is Muslims. He was polarising for Muslim votes. He was playing divisive politics, and today he wants to bring a bill against hate speech!”
Union Minister Kishan Reddy also slammed the Congress government in Telangana for taking the people for a ride over poll promises. In an open letter to Sonia Gandhi, he alleged, “Instead of honouring the commitments given during the elections, the Telangana government appears to be misleading the people. Under the guise of development, it has attempted to introduce a new narrative through a vision document while the earlier guarantees remain unaddressed. Shockingly, the party leadership seems content to congratulate itself rather than demand accountability.”
Criticising the central leadership of the Congress, particularly the Gandhi family, Reddy stated,
“During this period, have you ever reviewed or enquired about the status of the manifesto that you, along with Shri Rahul Gandhi, Smt Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and the Congress party promised to the people of Telangana? Did you even raise this issue when the chief minister met you recently?”

Alleging a "political conspiracy" is underway to restart the dispute of the Babri Masjid, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said that the recent foundation stone laying ceremony for the masjid in West Bengal's Murshidabad is being "done for votes" and will not benefit either Hindus or Muslims.
A few weeks ago, suspended TMC leader and MLA Humayun Kabir had laid the foundation stone for the construction of Babri Masjid in Murshidabad district on December 6. He drew attention to the constitutional right to build places of worship and said that he is not doing anything unconstitutional, "as anyone can make a temple or church, so can I".
According to the suspended TMC leader, a 300-crore budget has been allocated for the mosque, which will also include a hospital, guesthouse, and meeting hall. He reiterated his commitment to the project and said, "It is a promise of the Muslims: The Babri Masjid will be built, it will be built, it will be built."
Kabir asserted that legal challenges would not deter the mosque's construction. He further referred to the demolished Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, calling it a historically controversial site.
"Now, this is a political conspiracy to restart the dispute by rebuilding the Babri Masjid. This is being done for votes; it is neither for the benefit of Muslims nor Hindus. This shouldn't happen. That's what I think," Mohan Bhagwat said in Kolkata.
Bhagwat has also rejected the idea of religious places being built with government money, giving the example of the Somnath temple being constructed with donations by people.
"The government should not build temples or any religious place. That's the rule. The Somnath temple was built. At that time, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the Home Minister. The President attended its inauguration, but government money was not used," he said.
Similarly, Ram Mandir was built after a Supreme Court judgement, and people contributed to a trust, he said.
"The Ram Mandir was built after the Supreme Court judgment. The government was asked to form a trust, and they did. The government didn't provide the money. We all contributed," he said.
Bhagwat addressed the RSS event at Science City, Kolkata, where multiple other dignitaries, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Admiral (retd.) DK Joshi were also present.
The 100 Vyakhyanmala programme by RSS is a series of lectures given by the organisation's chief Mohan Bhagwat, part of the RSS' centenary celebrations.

PM Modi says Congress would have let ‘Assam go to East Pakistan’: What was the 1946 plan; what Nehru, Gandhi said then
by Yashee
December 22, 2025
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently praised Assam’s first chief minister Gopinath Bordoloi for “standing up to his own party” and “saving Assam from being separated from the country.”
Speaking in Guwahati on December 20, PM Modi said, “Congress had conspired to erase the identity of this place… since before Independence. When the Muslim League and British powers got together and were preparing the ground for dividing India, at that time there was a plan to make Assam too a part of East Pakistan. Congress was going to become a part of that conspiracy, too. Then Bordoloi ji stood against his own party. He opposed this move to erase Assam’s identity and saved Assam from being separated from the country.”
What was this plan that Modi referred to, and what happened back in 1946? How did Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru react to the plan? We explain.
The Cabinet Mission Plan of 1946
By the 1940s, especially after World War II ended and Winston Churchill lost power, the withdrawal of the British from India was seen as more or less inevitable, with the modalities of independence and the creation of a new government to be worked out.
In line with this, on March 24, 1946, three British Cabinet ministers under Prime Minister Clement Attlee were sent to India. The three were Lord Pethick-Lawrence, Secretary of State for India; Sir Stafford Cripps, President of the Board of Trade; and A V Alexander, First Lord of the Admiralty. The Viceroy of India was then Lord Archibald Wavell.
The Cabinet Mission came up with a plan outlining the contours of the nation moving towards self governance. While pitched as a last-ditch attempt to keep India united, the plan had inherent contradictions which would make its implementation very difficult.
The basic premise of the Cabinet Mission Plan of 1946 was this: there would be a three-tier constitutional framework for British India, comprising a Federal Union at the top, autonomous provinces at the base, and an intermediate level of provincial groupings. These groupings were organised into three Groups — the north-western provinces Punjab, Sindh, and Baluchistan; the eastern provinces of Assam and Bengal; and the remaining central regions of India. It was in this Group system that Assam and Bengal were clubbed.
Although it never agreed to the specifics, the Congress was, in principle, in favour of the tiered federal framework proposed by the Cabinet Mission as it provided a vision for an independent and undivided India. The Muslim League also accepted it.
Assam’s objection to the Cabinet Mission Plan
Gopinath Bordoloi (also spelt Bardoloi), the CM of Assam, was against the lumping together of Assam with Bengal. Sagar Boruah in a paper published in the Proceedings of the Indian History Congress, Vol. 63 (‘Nation building in North-East India: Role of the National Movement), writes, “The Assam Provincial Congress Committee totally rejected this grouping in the plan. The leaders of the Assam Provincial Congress feared that under this ‘grouping’ Assam might be sacrificed and tagged to Muslim dominated zone to appease the League.”

Bordoloi vowed to oppose this, but wanted to consult Gandhi before going ahead. He thus dispatched two Assam Congress leaders, Bijaychandra Bhagawati and Mahendra Mohan Choudhury, to meet Gandhi, who told them in unequivocal terms to reject the plan, and that Assam “should lodge its protest and retire from the Constituent Assembly.”
The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi has a detailed description of the meeting, an account of which was published in the December 29, 1946 issue of Harijan under the title ‘Gandhiji’s Advice to Assam’.
Telling the two leaders not to worry about “rebelling against the Congress”, Gandhi said, “If you do not act correctly and now, Assam will be finished. Tell Bardoloi I do not feel the least uneasiness. My mind is made up. Assam must not lose its soul. It must uphold it against the whole world. Else I will say that Assam had only manikins and no men. It is an impertinent suggestion that Bengal should dominate Assam in any way… Tell the people even if Gandhiji tries to dissuade us, we won’t listen.”
Nehru’s position on the Cabinet Mission Plan and Assam
Nehru felt that the Cabinet Mission Plan had been devised because the British wanted to “save the face of Jinnah” and not push him into an “impossible corner”. He opposed Assam being forced into anything.
For more perspective on Nehru and Assam | Amit Shah claims Nehru bid ‘bye bye to Assam’ during 1962 war: What former PM said, in what context
On July 22, 1946, he wrote to Bordoloi, “I feel that to decide against the Group was right and proper..”. On September 23, 1946, he wrote again to the Assam leader, “But in no event are we going to agree to a province like Assam being forced against its will to do anything.” [both letters on The Nehru Archive].
In an interview to BBC in April 1946, Nehru said about Assam, “In the North West Frontier Province, the people, though predominantly Muslim, have voted for the Congress Party. They have shown by a huge majority that they are opposed to a separate Pakistan state… Assam also is obviously opposed to Pakistan….Thus, even on the principle of self-determination to which the Muslim League appeals, four important areas, which Mr. Jinnah claims — the Frontier Province, Assam, west Bengal and southern Punjab — cannot form part of Pakistan.”
Then on July 10, 1946, Nehru famously addressed a press conference in Bombay, which essentially sealed the fate of the Cabinet Mission Plan as it was seen as Congress’s rejection of the Plan. Here, about Assam, Nehru said, “It is highly likely that Assam will decide against grouping with Bengal… I can say, with every assurance and conviction, that there is going to be, finally, no grouping there, because Assam will not tolerate it under any circumstances whatever.”

One arrested after meat trader attacked over beef suspicion in Aligarh; hunt on for others
21.12.25
A meat trader here was allegedly attacked by 10 people over suspicion of selling beef, police said on Sunday.
One of the accused, Anshu Pandit, was arrested near the ISKCON temple in Harduaganj on Sunday, while efforts are on to nab others, they said.
The meat trader and complainant, Mohammad Shareef Qureshi, was on his way to shop on Saturday when the accused, on two motorcycles and an SUV, surrounded him and allegedly assaulted him with bricks, the police said.
Qureshi, in his complaint, claimed that he is an authorised buffalo meat supplier to an export unit, and said that he showed valid shipment documents to the attackers, but they snatched and tore them, threatening to kill him if he did not stop his meat trade.
The police have booked 10 persons, including Pandit, Naveen Choudhary and Sumit Thakur, under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Circle Officer Rajiv Dwivedi said.
Congress leader Salman Imtiaz demanded that the accused be booked under provisions related to attempted mob lynching to act as a deterrent, and alleged that attacks on meat traders have become frequent in the district.
Multiple teams have been formed to identify and arrest all those involved in the violence, the CO said.

Haryana Private Universities Bill likely to be passed on Monday; would impact functioning of Al Falah University
Harpreet Bajwa
21 Dec 2025
CHANDIGARH: The BJP-led Haryana Government has tabled the Haryana Private Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2025, in the state assembly, outlining stringent measures, including the dissolution of the university's management body and the takeover of its functioning through the appointment of an administrator.
According to sources, the bill, which was introduced in the state assembly on Friday by State Higher Education Minister Mahipal Dhanda, will have a direct impact on the functioning of Al Falah University, which has been under the scanner for allegedly facilitating a "white-collar terror module."
The proposed law allows the government to intervene in the administration or dissolve the management if the institution is found to be involved in "any grave lapses, including matters relating to national security, sovereignty and integrity of India, public security, law and order, misuse of university premises for unlawful and anti-national activities or any other serious act prejudicial to public interest."
"If any such act has occurred, the government may order any inquiry into any such act, contraventions, or lapses and appoint an inquiry officer or a committee consisting of not more than five persons for this purpose,’’ the bill reads.
Introducing the bill, the minister asserted that under the current provisions of the law, the dissolution of the university and the appointment of the administrator were not possible.
"A new provision needs to be inserted to streamline the procedure," he said.
According to the proposed law, if any wrongdoing is suspected, an official or a committee shall conduct an inquiry and submit a report to the government within 30 days.
The committee will be vested with the powers of a civil court under the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908.
After the government receives the report, it can issue a show cause notice giving the university seven days to reply.
"Upon consideration of the reply to the show-cause, if the government is not satisfied, it may appoint an administrator for a period of three years,’’ it added.
"The university shall not commence the first enrolment of the students without the specific authorisation of the government. It has been authorised to cancel the permission to continue the course after an inquiry, ” the bill added.
The bill also proposes a minimum penalty of Rs 10 lakh in case the university is found to be involved in any illegal activities.
The Higher Education Department, through another provision, has been authorised to conduct an annual academic and administrative audit of the university to ascertain the standards of teaching, examination, and research.

Iraqi Sunni tribal coalition condemns armed group for rejecting disarmament
2025-12-21
On Sunday, an Iraqi Sunni tribal alliance criticized an unspecified armed faction for refusing to surrender weapons to the state.
In a statement, the Iraq Awakening (Sahwat Al-Iraq) Council, a coalition of Sunni tribes that fought Al-Qaeda alongside US forces during the 2007–2008 surge, praised several factions that it said had complied with Supreme Judicial Council Chief Faiq Zidan’s call to restrict arms to state control.
The Council, however, singled out one faction it did not name, accusing it of “rebellion” against judicial guidance and describing its stance as a direct challenge to state authority.
Kataib Hezbollah, an Iran-aligned group, said a day earlier it would only discuss disarmament after the withdrawal of US, NATO, and Turkish forces from Iraq. Other groups, including Asaib Ahl Al-Haq and Ansar Allah Al-Awfiya, And Ktaib Imam Ali, have voiced cooperation with the judicial guidance.
Keeping weapons outside state authority while maintaining what the Council described as “external ties” could not be justified under any national or political cover, the statement added, pointing to the group’s own experience fighting terrorism as a model. “Our weapons operated solely under orders from the General Command of the Armed Forces and were never used outside the law or for factional or political ends.”
Disarming armed groups, many with close ties to Iran, has long been a source of tension in Iraqi politics and a consistent demand by the United States. The issue is expected to feature in discussions with US Envoy to Iraq Mark Savaya, who is visiting Baghdad “in the coming days.”

US senator Lindsey Graham urges military action if Hamas, Hezbollah remained armed
December 21, 2025
JERUSALEM: US Senator Lindsey Graham called on Sunday for renewed military action against Hamas and Hezbollah if they fail to disarm and accused the Palestinian Islamist group of consolidating its power in Gaza.
The Republican politician, on a visit to Israel, is a staunch ally of US President Donald Trump.
Beginning in October, a fragile ceasefire has so far halted two years of war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip despite both sides trading accusations of truce violations.
A separate ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah also came into effect in November 2024 after more than a year of hostilities, though Israel continues to carry out strikes on Lebanese territory.
Israel has made dismantling the arsenals of both groups, allies of its arch-foe Iran, a key condition for any lasting peace.
“It’s imperative we come up with a plan quickly, put Hamas on a time clock, give them a period of time to achieve the goal of disarmament,” Graham said at a press conference during his visit.
“And if you don’t, I would encourage President Trump to unleash Israel to go finish off Hamas.”
“It’s a long, brutal war, but you cannot be successful anywhere in the region until you deliver in dealing Hamas out of the future of Gaza and disarming them,” Graham added, insisting that the second stage of the truce would fail if Hamas remains armed.
“Ninety days after the ceasefire, they are consolidating power in Gaza,” Graham said.
He also called for military engagement against Hezbollah if it too does not surrender its weapons.
“If Hezbollah refuses to give up their heavy weapons, down the road we should engage in military operations working with Lebanon, Israel and the United States, where we fly with Israel... to take Hezbollah out,” Graham said.
The Lebanese government has begun to disarm Hezbollah, starting in the country’s south, and insists it will complete the plan.
Israel, however, has questioned the effectiveness of the Lebanese military, and Hezbollah itself has repeatedly refused to lay down its weapons.
Graham’s remarks came a day after mediators the United States, Qatar, Egypt and Turkiye urged both sides in the Gaza war to uphold the ceasefire.
The mediators are pressing for the implementation of the second phase of the truce, which would involve an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the deployment of an international stabilization force and the establishment of an interim authority to govern the territory in place of Hamas.
The second phase of the Gaza truce also envisages the demilitarization of the territory, including the disarmament of Hamas.
Graham backed Israel’s opposition to Turkiye being included in the stabilization force, saying it would “rock Israel to its core.”
“There is no political support anywhere in Israel for having Turkiye being involved in the stabilising force,” he said.
Hamas, meanwhile, has called on the mediators and Washington to stop Israeli “violations” of the ceasefire in Gaza.
On Sunday, Israeli artillery shelling was reported in several parts of Gaza’s southern area of Khan Yunis, according to the civil defense agency, which operates under the authority of Hamas.
On Friday, six people, including two children, were killed in an Israeli bombing of a school serving as a shelter for displaced people, according to the agency.

Israeli FM urges Jews to move to Israel a week after Sydney attack
December 22, 2025
JERUSALEM: Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called on Sunday for Jews in Western countries to move to Israel to escape rising antisemitism, one week after 15 were shot dead at a Jewish event in Sydney.
“Jews have the right to live in safety everywhere. But we see and fully understand what is happening, and we have a certain historical experience. Today, Jews are being hunted across the world,” Saar said at a public candle lighting marking the last day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.
“Today I call on Jews in England, Jews in France, Jews in Australia, Jews in Canada, Jews in Belgium: come to the Land of Israel! Come home!” Saar said at the ceremony, held with leaders of Jewish communities and organizations worldwide.
Since the outbreak of the war in Gaza, sparked by Hamas’s unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Israeli leaders have repeatedly denounced a surge in antisemitism in Western countries and accused their governments of failing to curb it.
Australian authorities have said the December 14 attack on a Hanukkah event on Sydney’s Bondi Beach was inspired by the ideology of the Islamic State jihadist group.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Western governments to better protect their Jewish citizens.
“I demand that Western governments do what is necessary to fight antisemitism and provide the required safety and security for Jewish communities worldwide,” Netanyahu said in a video address.
In October, Saar accused British authorities of failing to take action to curb a “toxic wave of antisemitism” following an attack outside a Manchester synagogue on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, in which two people were killed and four wounded.
According to Israel’s 1950 “Law of Return,” any Jewish person in the world is entitled to settle in Israel (a process known in Hebrew as aliyah, or “ascent“) and acquire Israeli citizenship. The law also applies to individuals who have at least one Jewish grandparent.zz

Gaza access: Foreign press group welcomes Israel court deadline
December 21, 2025
JERUSALEM: The Foreign Press Association in Jerusalem on Sunday welcomed the Israeli Supreme Court’s decision to set Jan. 4 as the deadline for Israel to respond to its petition seeking media access to Gaza.
Since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, sparked by the attack on Israel, Israeli authorities have prevented foreign journalists from independently entering the devastated territory.
Israel has instead allowed, on a case-by-case basis, a handful of reporters to accompany its troops into the blockaded Palestinian territory.
The Foreign Press Association, which represents hundreds of foreign journalists in Israel and the Palestinian territories, filed a petition to the Supreme Court last year, seeking immediate access for international journalists to the Gaza Strip.
On Oct. 23, the court held its first hearing in the case and gave Israeli authorities one month to develop a plan to grant access.
Since then, the court has granted several extensions to the Israeli authorities to develop their plan, but on Saturday, it set Jan. 4 as the final deadline.
“If the respondents (Israeli authorities) do not inform us of their position by that date, a decision on the request for a conditional order will be made on the basis of the material in the case file,” the court said.
The FPA welcomed the court’s latest directive.
“After two years of the state’s delay tactics, we are pleased that the court’s patience has finally run out,” the association said in a statement.
“We renew our call for the state of Israel to immediately grant journalists free and unfettered access to the Gaza Strip.
“And should the government continue to obstruct press freedoms, we hope that the Supreme Court will recognize and uphold those freedoms,” it added.
An AFP journalist serves on the FPA board.
Meanwhile, US Senator Lindsey Graham accused Hamas of rearming during a visit to Israel on Sunday, and charged that the Palestinian group was also consolidating power in Gaza.
“My impression is that Hamas is not disarming, they are rearming,” Graham said in a video statement issued by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.
“It’s my impression that they are trying to consolidate power (and) not give it up in Gaza.”
Graham’s remarks came a day after mediators the US, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkiye urged both sides in the Gaza war to uphold the ceasefire.
Hamas has called on the mediators and Washington to stop Israeli “violations” of the ceasefire.
On Friday, six people, including two children, were killed in an Israeli bombing of a school serving as a shelter for displaced people, according to the civil defense agency in Gaza.

One dead in Israeli strikes on south Lebanon: ministry
December 21, 2025
BEIRUT: Israeli strikes in south Lebanon on Sunday killed one person and wounded another, the Lebanese health ministry said, as Israel’s military said it targeted Hezbollah members.
Israel has kept up regular strikes on Lebanon, usually saying it is targeting Hezbollah infrastructure or operatives, despite a November 2024 ceasefire that sought to end more than a year of hostilities with the Iran-backed militant group that erupted over the Gaza war.
It has also kept troops in five south Lebanon areas that it deems strategic.
The health ministry in Beirut said “two Israeli enemy strikes today, on a vehicle and a motorbike in the town of Yater” killed one person and wounded another.
Yater is around five kilometers (three miles) from the border with Israel.
In separate statements, the Israeli military said it “struck a Hezbollah terrorist in the area of Yater,” adding shortly afterwards that it “struck an additional Hezbollah terrorist” in the same area.
Also on Sunday, Lebanon’s army said in a statement that troops had discovered and dismantled “an Israeli spy device” in Yarun, elsewhere in south Lebanon near the border.
Under heavy US pressure and amid fears of expanded Israeli strikes, Lebanon has committed to disarming Hezbollah and plans to do so south of the Litani River, about 30 kilometers from the border with Israel, by year end.
Israel has questioned the Lebanese military’s effectiveness and has accused Hezbollah of rearming, while the group itself has rejected calls to surrender its weapons.
During a visit to Israel on Sunday, US Senator Lindsey Graham also accused Hezbollah of rearming.
“My impression is that Hezbollah is trying to make more weapons... That’s not an acceptable outcome,” Graham said in a video statement issued by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.
More than 340 people have been killed by Israeli fire in Lebanon since the ceasefire, according to an AFP tally of Lebanese health ministry reports.
This week at talks in Paris, Lebanon’s army chief agreed to document the military’s progress in disarming Hezbollah, the French foreign ministry said.
On Friday, Lebanese and Israeli civilian representatives took part in a meeting of the ceasefire monitoring committee for a second time, after holding their first direct talks in decades earlier this month under the committee’s auspices.
Israel said Friday’s meeting was part of broader efforts to ensure Hezbollah’s disarmament and strengthen security in border areas.

Jordanian border forces intercept drug-laden drone in southern region
December 21, 2025
LONDON: Jordanian border forces thwarted an attempt to smuggle drugs into the country via drone along the southern region and close to the western border on Sunday.
Border guards in the Southern Military Zone, overseeing the areas of Aqaba, Ma’an, Tafilah, and Al-Karak, monitored the drug-laden drone, intercepting and downing it within Jordanian territory.
The seized narcotic substances were submitted to the appropriate authorities for legal action, according to the Petra news agency.
Jordan is known as a transit point for smuggling drugs that are typically bound for the Gulf countries from Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq.
Smugglers are increasingly employing drones and balloons, which are guided by basic devices, to transport narcotics into Jordan from neighboring countries.

UK lawyers launch legal case against Met police for failing to halt “Crusade” protest targeting Muslims
December 21, 2025
Legal Action for Peace (LAfP), an organisation of lawyers and human rights advocates, today announced a major step in its legal challenge against the Metropolitan Police Service. The lawyers acting for LAfP sent a pre-action letter to the Commissioner of the Met, challenging the force’s decision to permit UKIP’s protest on 25th October which was framed as a “crusade” to “reclaim Whitechapel from the Islamists.”
The lawyers claimed that although the Met allowed the protest to proceed, with a rerouted location, it failed in its statutory duties to protect the British Muslim community from hate speech and incitement to violence.
Imran Khan & Partners said: “We have now served a Letter of Claim on the Metropolitan Police Service, putting them on notice of potential judicial review proceedings. We act on behalf of Legal Action for Peace; an organisation of Muslim lawyers and human rights advocates committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting fundamental rights.”
The Director for Legal Action for Peace, Ayesha Khan said “Freedom of speech does not include the freedom to incite violence. By rerouting but not stopping UKIP’s protest on 25th October, the Met gave the green light to hatred and failed in its fundamental duty to keep all Londoners safe. We are taking this stand because the rule of law must be applied equally to protect everyone. Hate speech that falls outside of the parameters of the law is not free speech.”
The organisation has also issued a public Crowdjustice fundraising campaign to support the legal costs for the judicial review claim, arguing that the police’s failure to ban the protest outright abandoned the Muslim community to targeted hate speech and violated core legal duties. This legal action is launched amidst a documented spike in anti-Muslim incidents.
Legal Action for Peace affirmed that it was taking this step to ensure that public authorities are held accountable for decisions that undermine community cohesion and threaten the safety and dignity of minority groups.

Racist attack targets Stockholm mosque, copy of Quran defaced
December 22, 2025
A racist attack has targeted the Stockholm Mosque in Sweden, with mosque officials saying a defaced copy of the Muslim holy book was discovered at the site.
In a statement on Sunday, the mosque’s administration said that a copy of the Holy Quran, with six bullet holes, was found chained to the railings of the stairs.
Mahmud al Halefi, chairman of the Stockholm Mosque, said that Islamophobic and racist attacks have been increasing day by day in Sweden. He noted that police have launched an investigation and that the incident has sparked strong reactions within the Muslim community.
Condemning the attack, Halefi said: “A copy of the Quran was chained to the railing next to the stairs leading to the mosque, and it had six bullet holes. There were also messages written in Arabic and Swedish on the Quran saying, ‘Thanks for the visit, but it’s time to go home.’
We perceived this message as an explicit racist statement targeting Muslims.”
Halefi stressed that the act was deeply offensive and part of a broader pattern of anti-Muslim hatred, calling on authorities to take firm measures against hate crimes and ensure the safety of religious communities.
Rising Islamophobic incidents in Sweden, Nordic countries
The attack on the Stockholm Mosque comes amid heightened tensions in Sweden following a series of high-profile Quran desecrations in recent years.
Most notably, Salwan Momika, an Iraqi man, carried out multiple public burnings and acts of desecration of the Quran in Stockholm in 2023, including outside the parliament building, the Stockholm Mosque, and the Iraqi embassy.
These acts, which were conducted under police protection, sparked widespread outrage across the Muslim world, triggered protests and unrest in several countries, and strained Sweden’s diplomatic relations.
Momika’s actions led to investigations by Swedish authorities for incitement against ethnic groups. In early 2024, he was killed in a shooting, prompting a Stockholm court to postpone a verdict in his case.
Despite his death, Muslim communities and human rights groups have warned that Islamophobic incidents continue to rise in Sweden and other Nordic countries.
International bodies, including the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the European Union, and the United Nations, have condemned Quran desecrations, calling on states to take stronger measures against hate crimes.

University threatened with legal action after protest at academic's talk
22 Dec, 2025
Branwen Jeffreys
A leading academic, who led a recent government review into sex and gender data collection has threatened legal action against the University of Bristol, claiming it failed to protect her freedom of speech.
Prof Alice Sullivan has also written to the university regulator, the Office for Students, after a talk she gave at the university was disrupted by a trans rights protest.
Universities have a legal duty to uphold the right to free speech, while balancing that with the right to protest by those who object.
The University of Bristol rejected her claims and said the talk went ahead safely - despite "unacceptable disruption" - in line with its "strong commitment to upholding free speech".
Universities have a longstanding legal duty to protect the rights of staff, students and visiting speakers to express views which others might find offensive.
That has come into sharper focus with a new freedom of speech law in higher education, which came into force in August in England.
The University of Bristol said every action it had taken was in support of free speech.
Prof Sullivan's review for the government, published in March, recommended that data on biological sex and gender identity should be recorded as distinct categories.
She said she was first invited to speak about her work by an academic at the University of Bristol in July 2024, and agreed to an event that autumn.
In a new letter to the university, which warns she is willing to bring a legal challenge, Prof Sullivan said the university had first suggested the event was held online rather than in person.
When asked by the BBC why she had rejected that offer, Prof Sullivan said she did not realise what the scale of potential protests would be, but accepted that some people might have strongly opposing views on gender identity and had the right to express them.
"Everyone has a right to peaceful protest, but that must never amount to a heckler's veto, which means shutting down other people's right to speak," she said.
"This isn't just about my rights as a visiting speaker, this is about the rights of the university community to hold discussions and to have people come and listen."
After further delay, the event was scheduled for 22 October 2025.
As Prof Sullivan arrived, some attendees filmed the protest on their phones at the front of the building.
Videos - seen and verified by the BBC - show some of the protesters making rude gestures as others held signs.
Prof Sullivan told the BBC it was like a "zombie apocalypse" as some protesters pressed up against the window with placards and loudhailers.
The fire alarm was set off more than once, disrupting the talk, until security staff advised they move to a higher floor.
As she left after the event, Prof Sullivan said she heard "howls of 'shame on you, shame on you'".
The police told the BBC they had attended the event and said no arrests had been made.
The letter that has now been sent by Prof Sullivan's lawyers says the University of Bristol had 15 months to find a secure location on campus for the talk.
It adds that documents disclosed by the university reveal there had been complaints made by its LGBTQ+ staff network against her speaking.
Prof Sullivan says she has raised many of her concerns with the Office for Students, which as regulator of universities in England has the power to fine institutions if they fail to uphold freedom of speech.
Earlier this year, the OfS handed out a record fine of £585,000 to the University of Sussex, warning that its transgender and non-binary inclusion policy had a "chilling effect" on freedom of speech.
Kathleen Stock had previously left her job as professor of philosophy at Sussex following protests against her gender-critical views, which generally say that a person's sex cannot be changed and takes precedence over their gender identity.
Following the Sussex fine, the University of Bristol withdrew a similar policy which said all staff were responsible for removing "transphobic and anti-trans material" from campus.
In August, a new freedom of speech law came into force, strengthening the legal obligations on universities to uphold freedom of speech.
The government has not yet brought in the complaints process promised as part of the stronger powers.
Prof Sullivan has told Arif Ahmed, the OfS's director of free speech, she is concerned that "gender ideology" led to Bristol's "actions to obstruct and frustrate my talk".
She told the BBC that senior managers at the university "could have apologised, and they could have said we intend to do better in future".
"That is what I want from them," she said.
A University of Bristol spokesperson said the talk went ahead safely and in line with its "strong commitment to upholding free speech".
"Although protesters caused unacceptable disruption, appropriate measures were in place to enable the event to continue and to protect the speaker and attendees," they said.
The university added that the vice-chancellor had subsequently met with Prof Sullivan.
"We refute claims that we failed to protect her freedom of speech; every action we took was in support of this and the restrictions she outlines were all necessary for public safety," the spokesperson said.
"Our stance is clear - free speech must be lawful. There is no protection within the law for abusive speech that incites violence, harassment or discrimination.
"Clearly the intimidating behaviour of protesters was not peaceful and we have condemned their unacceptable behaviour.
"We will take disciplinary action if anyone from the university community is identified as being involved."

EU tampering with Ukraine peace talks – Putin aide
21 Dec, 2025
European and Ukrainian efforts to revise US-backed peace proposals on the Ukraine conflict are undermining, rather than advancing, the prospects of a lasting settlement, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s foreign policy aide, Yury Ushakov, said on Sunday.
Ushakov made the remarks as US and Russian officials met in Miami, after separate talks this month between US negotiators and their Ukrainian and EU counterparts.
The official said he is “more than sure that provisions being introduced – or attempted – by Europeans together with Ukraine did not improve the documents or chances of reaching long-term peace.” He added that he has not seen the texts and is relying on “signals in the media.”
He also denied that three-way talks involving Russia, Ukraine, and the US are being discussed.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also said European participation in the Ukraine talks “does not bode well” for a settlement.
Meanwhile, senior Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev, who has traveled to Miami for talks with US officials, called the dialogue “constructive,” adding that they will continue on December 21.
On Friday, US officials also met in Miami with national security advisers from Germany, France, and Britain, as well as Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council secretary, Rustem Umerov, Axios journalist Barak Ravid reported, citing sources. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani also took part.
The US-drafted peace plan leaked last month reportedly requires Ukraine to relinquish parts of Russia’s Donbass region that it still controls, agree to stay out of NATO, and limit the size of its armed forces in exchange for Western security guarantees. Both Ukraine and its backers in the EU have ruled out any territorial concessions.
Moscow maintains that a lasting settlement must include Ukrainian neutrality, demilitarization, denazification, and recognition of the reality on the ground.

Doctors return to work in England after five-day strike
22 Dec, 2025
Claire Keenan
Doctors in England will return to work on Monday after a planned five-day walkout over ongoing pay disputes.
The strike went ahead amid surging flu cases, and despite last-minute talks between the British Medical Association (BMA) and the government. BMA members rejected a new government offer that aimed to tackle issues with training and job security.
Speaking to the British Medical Journal on Friday, BMA resident doctor leader DR Jack Fletcher said doctors were being lost to other countries because "they will essentially pay me more and also treat me better."
Health Secretary Wes Streeting said he would like to see an end to the dispute by the new year.
Resident doctors, the new name for junior doctors, called for the government to provide a "genuinely long-term plan" to increase pay, and for more training places created for qualified doctors to specialise and progress their careers.
The doctors' union said 65% of its members had participated in what was the 14th strike since March 2023.
The doctors' union has argued that resident doctors' pay is still a fifth lower than it was in 2008, due to inflation. This year, they received an average pay rise of 5.4%.
During a visit to an ambulance station in London last week, Streeting said: "I do want to end this dispute.
"I don't want us to be locked in a bitter dispute, and I'm never going to shut the door to talks, and I will do my best to see if we can start 2026 off on a better foot."
But, Streeting said, the BMA is "demanding an extra 26% on top of what we've already given".
"That is not a figure that we can afford but we will get around the table with them again in the new year," he added.
Health experts have warned that the impact of the strike will be felt into the new year "and beyond".
Last week, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called the walkout "dangerous and utterly irresponsible" particularly during a record flu season for the start of winter.
During the walkout, the BMA said they would work with NHS bosses to ensure safety in hospitals and other parts of the health service.
While the NHS remains on high alert over flu, the surge in the virus is slowing for now at least. The BBC reported on Friday just over 3,000 patients were in hospital in England with the virus.
Meanwhile in Scotland, residential doctors are set to strike from 13 January to 17 January. It will be the first time NHS workers have staged a national walkout.

US and Ukraine call Miami talks productive despite no breakthrough
22 Dec, 2025
George Wright
US and Ukrainian envoys say "productive and constructive" talks have taken place in Miami, but there still appears to be no major breakthrough in efforts to end Ukraine's war with Russia.
Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, issued a joint statement with the top Ukrainian negotiator, Rustem Umerov, after three days of meetings with European allies.
The pair said the meeting focused on aligning positions on a 20-point plan, a "multilateral security guarantee framework", a "US Security guarantee framework for Ukraine" and an "economic & prosperity plan".
Separate talks have been taking place in Miami between the US and the Russian envoy, Kirill Dmitriev.
"Our shared priority is to stop the killing, ensure guaranteed security, and create conditions for Ukraine's recovery, stability, and long-term prosperity," Witkoff and Umerov said in a statement.
The meetings are the latest step in weeks of diplomatic activity, sparked by the leaking of a 28-point US peace plan which shocked Ukraine and its European allies for appearing to favour Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine nearly four years ago.
Witkoff said representatives from Russia had met himself and other US officials in southern Florida, including Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Witkoff said the meetings with Russian envoy Dmitriev were also "productive and constructive" and that "Russia remains fully committed to achieving peace in Ukraine".
Trump has been pushing Ukraine and Russia to come to an agreement on ending the war, but so far the two countries have been unable to agree on major issues, including Moscow's demand to keep land it has already seized.
US intelligence reports continue to warn that Russian President Vladimir Putin still wants to capture all of Ukraine and reclaim parts of Europe that belonged to the former Soviet empire, six sources familiar with US intelligence told the Reuters news agency.
This comes says after Putin told the BBC's Steve Rosenberg that there will be no more wars after Ukraine, if Russia is treated with respect.
"There won't be any operations if you treat us with respect, if you respect our interests just as we've always tried to respect yours," he said.
Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone attack damaged two vessels and two piers in Russia's southern Krasnodar region, Russian officials said on Monday.
The damage led to a big fire, but Russian authorities say all crew were safely evacuated. Some reports say oil infrastructure was targeted.

‘Teaches us to give back’: Muslim youth group hands out meals to Londoners in need
Lauren Kuivenhoven
December 21, 2025
A Muslim youth group is heading downtown Sunday afternoon to distribute meals to unhoused Londoners.
It’s an annual tradition called “Holiday Dinner on Wheels” put on by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association to help people experiencing homelessness access a meal.
Along with their youth leaders, approximately 20 Muslim youths will drive to the corner of Queen’s Avenue and Adelaide at 3 p.m. and hand out meals to people on the street.
“Wherever we see unhoused individuals, we will approach them, and you know essentially ask them if they would like some food and then give it to them. And then we’ll kind of drive around and see if there’s any more people and offer to them as well,” said Mutaal Minhas, a local member of Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association in London.
The group prepares the meals ahead of time, and Minhas says they expect to hand out 100 to 150 meals on Sunday.
There are two options to choose from, an egg salad sandwich or a chickpea salad. The meals are loaded into a trailer, transported downtown and handed out by the youths.
Minhas says they’ve received a strong response from Londoners in need over the past few years.
“A lot of people nowadays, especially during the holiday season, they’re in need of a nice meal, so they’re really receptive and appreciative of it.”
Last year, the group served 120 meals in London.
The initiative started just after the pandemic and is put on by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association in various cities across Canada.
Hassaan Shahid, spokesperson for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association, says not only has the tradition positively impacted the community, but it has also helped the youth put Islamic teaching into practice by helping those in need.
“It helps them to stay involved in positive initiatives and, you know, create a sense of unity and community service.”
Minhas, who’s been involved in the association for 15 years, echoes the importance of teaching youth to give back.
“Even for me, when I was a youth, I’ve seen our community do these types of programs and essentially teaches us to give back to those that are in need, you know, especially during the holiday season.”
The youth group is also organizing a food drive, and encourages donations of non-perishable food items.

Witkoff calls talks with Putin envoy ‘productive’
21 Dec, 2025
US special envoy Steve Witkoff has described the latest negotiations in Miami with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, as “productive and constructive,” signaling continued momentum in US-led efforts to reach a settlement of the Ukraine conflict.
In a statement posted on X on Sunday, Witkoff said Dmitriev held meetings over the past two days in Florida with an American delegation that included Witkoff himself, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and White House official Josh Gruenbaum. The discussions, he said, were aimed at advancing Trump’s peace plan for Ukraine.
“Russia remains fully committed to achieving peace in Ukraine,” Witkoff wrote, adding that Moscow “highly values the efforts and support of the United States” in resolving the conflict and restoring global security.
Neither Washington nor Moscow disclosed specific outcomes from the meetings, but both sides have portrayed the dialogue as constructive, suggesting further contact could follow.
“Thank you, Miami. Next time: Moscow,” Dmitriev said after the talks.
The talks with Dmitriev took place in parallel with a separate round of meetings involving Ukraine and its Western backers. According to Witkoff, a Ukrainian delegation spent three days in Florida holding consultations with US and EU officials.
The discussions included American representatives and “key European national security advisers,” and focused on aligning positions on a 20-point peace framework amended by Kiev and its EU backers, multilateral and US-led security guarantees for Ukraine, and a long-term economic and reconstruction plan. Witkoff said particular attention was given to timelines and the sequencing of the next steps.
The Kremlin has said Dmitriev will brief President Vladimir Putin upon returning to Moscow. Putin’s foreign policy aide, Yury Ushakov, stressed on Sunday that Russia remains skeptical of proposals advanced by Kiev and its European supporters, adding that Moscow will stick to the understanding reached between Putin and Trump during their summit in Alaska in August.

President of peace? Decoding Trump’s ‘eight wars ended’ claim
Dec 21, 2025
“I only ask… what is the cost of lies?” a haunting question from the HBO mini-series Chernobyl that spills into the political theatre of the 2020s.
Donald Trump has long sought to recast himself as a global peacemaker. His fascination with the Nobel Peace Prize is well documented, as are his complaints that he won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize "no matter what" he does.
Since returning to the White House in January 2025, Trump has doubled down on that image, repeatedly claiming credit for ending wars across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
This year, the Nobel committee awarded the Peace Prize to Venezuela’s María Corina Machado.
But that didn't deter the 47th POTUS.
In speeches, Truth Social posts, and even his 2025 Christmas address, Trump has continued to claim credit for “ending eight wars,” presenting a series of ceasefires and agreements as evidence of his unique diplomatic prowess.
But does his claim actually hold up? Here’s a look:
India–Pakistan
Perhaps Trump’s most ambitious claim. India and Pakistan have fought several wars since 194. In April 2025, a terrorist attack in Kashmir killed 26 tourists. In response, India launched cross-border strikes on May 7 (Operation Sindoor), and Pakistan retaliated with air raids, all of which were thwarted by the Indian armed forces. On May 10, Trump announced a ceasefire via a Truth Social post, claiming it followed US-mediated talks.
From there on, Trump has on several occasions suggested that trade pressure helped defuse the situation, claiming he warned both sides that future trade deals depended on ending hostilities. He later repeated similar assertions on Truth Social and in media interviews.
He has also on multiple occasions suggested that trade pressure helped defuse the situation, claiming he warned both sides that future trade deals depended on ending hostilities.
Pakistan’s leadership publicly thanked Trump, with officials proposing to nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize.
But India flatly rejected any US role. Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Parliament that no foreign leader asked India to halt Operation Sindoor. External affairs minister S Jaishankar also said there was “no third-party intervention” and denied any link between the ceasefire and trade talks.
Thailand–Cambodia border clashes
Thailand and Cambodia have long disputed stretches of their 500-km border (especially around the Preah Vihear temple) since boundaries set in the colonial era. In July 2025 the conflict suddenly flared. After a Cambodian soldier was killed, both sides exchanged artillery and rocket fire for days. At least 48 people died and 300,000 were displaced in that July fight, the worst fighting in a decade. Trump then stepped in: on 28 July he posted on Truth Social that “both Countries have reached a CEASEFIRE and PEACE” after US “involvement,” proclaiming himself “President of PEACE!”. He attended an October ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, where Thai and Cambodian leaders (with Malaysia and US observers) signed a detailed truce – called the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord.
Trump's eight wars
In reality, however, the ceasefire repeatedly collapsed. By late 2025 fresh clashes had erupted. In early December 2025, Cambodian officials reported new Thai artillery fire, and Thailand responded with air strikes – in a resumption of fighting that killed civilians on both sides.
Both governments accused the other of violations. Thailand publicly denied any ceasefire was in place: Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on December 12 that “Thailand had not agreed to a ceasefire… and its forces would continue fighting”. Heavy clashes on December 8–9 were reported, noting that by then some 20 people were reported killed and 260 wounded in renewed fighting. Thailand had even suspended implementation of the October truce, citing new landmines allegedly laid by Cambodia.
In short, Trump’s ceasefire announcement had no lasting effect: by mid-December the frontier fighting was as intense as before, and Thailand’s leaders openly contradicted Trump’s claim.
Rwanda–Democratic Republic of Congo
Eastern Congo has been wracked by war for decades, as dozens of rebel groups (notably the M23, widely believed allied with Rwanda) fight over land and minerals. Over 7 million people have been displaced, and rebel raids continue regularly. In June 2025 Trump flew to Washington to host a summit between DRC President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame. The leaders signed a “ceasefire” and mutual cooperation pact, with the US mediator. Trump hailed this as ending “their War, which was known for violent bloodshed … for decades”. He also touted the mineral side – the deal promised US firms special access to Congo’s rare earths. Both African presidents even joked about how they “love each other” in media appearances.
But within days the war resumed. Just hours after the Washington ceremony the M23 rebels (excluded from the talks) attacked again, seizing towns and clashing with Congolese forces. Each side blamed the other. Heavy fighting and displacements continued across eastern Congo through late 2025, with thousands of new casualties reported in those weeks. Analysts say US diplomacy only “paused an escalation” – it did not tackle the root causes.
Thus, while Trump got photos with Kagame and Tshisekedi, the war in eastern Congo remains active. New attacks by M23 in December 2025 (and bombings blamed on allied groups like CODECO) show the conflict persists.
Israel–Hamas (Gaza War)
The violence between Israel and Hamas erupted anew on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel (killing ~1,200 Israelis). Israel then launched a massive military campaign in Gaza. By late 2025 about 70,000 Palestinians were reported killed, mostly civilians, and Israel suffered around 2,000 casualties. On Oct. 13, under heavy international pressure Trump unveiled a 20-point Gaza peace plan.
At a White House summit (which Israel and Hamas did not attend), world leaders endorsed a phased ceasefire: Israel would halt its assault and withdraw, Hamas would cease rocket fire, and ultimately there would be an international force and reconstruction of Gaza.
Trump claims he personally brokered the Gaza ceasefire. The agreement was signed on October 9 and the first phase went into effect. Hamas released 20 Israeli hostages (and 27 sets of remains) while Israel freed Palestinian prisoners. In a staged ceremony, Trump announced the end of the “war between Israel and Hamas.”
On the ground, daily missile attacks have largely stopped, but reports of ceasefire violations continue, with both sides blaming each other. Even after October 10, Israel carried out sporadic strikes in Gaza and the West Bank in response to alleged Hamas violations.
Israel–Iran war
In June 2025 Israel opened a second front by striking Iran’s nuclear facilities (reportedly in retaliation for earlier attacks). The US also carried out targeted strikes on key Iranian military sites around the same time, which Tehran said caused limited damage but signalled direct American involvement.
Israel and Iran then exchanged aerial strikes for about twelve days. Iran’s media reported roughly 1,000 Iranians killed and ~30 Israelis dead in that exchange. Mid-June, Trump announced he had achieved a ceasefire. A Truth Social post on June 23 read: “Israel and Iran had agreed to a cease-fire… It was my great honor to Destroy all Nuclear facilities & capability, and then, STOP THE WAR!”. Indeed, no major battles followed after that date. Israeli PM Netanyahu praised Trump, and Iranian officials officially went quiet.
But did this end the war? There was no formal treaty. Iran’s Supreme Leader promptly said US strikes “did not achieve anything” and Iran had “emerged victorious”. Analysts note this conflict was only paused, not resolved. One Israeli security expert told Sky News that Trump’s role “only pushed the conflict into a state of dormancy” without addressing the core issues. Furthermore, Iran’s nuclear program was not defeated: international monitors report Tehran still has enough highly enriched uranium and know-how to make a bomb.
Israeli and US officials now claim the fighting stopped, but all underlying problems remain. The Iranians suffered some damage from both Israeli and US strikes, yet still control the region’s dominant militias. Iran says it will rebuild what was lost. Even Trump’s own claims that he “destroyed all nuclear capability” are disputed by experts and observers.
Armenia–Azerbaijan (Nagorno-Karabakh)
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been in frozen conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh since the 1980s. In late 2023 Azerbaijan reconquered the breakaway enclave, displacing most of its ethnic Armenian population. On August 8, Trump hosted Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan at the White House. There, in front of cameras, they signed a comprehensive peace agreement. The deal commits both sides to stop fighting, open diplomatic relations and respect each other’s territorial integrity. It also grants the US exclusive rights to build a trade and transport corridor through southern Armenia. Both leaders publicly thanked Trump and said they would nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize.
This is perhaps Trump’s most formal peace treaty, and its two parties have, for now, promised to uphold it.
Egypt-Ethiopia
This claim is the most interesting. Trump lists “keeping peace between Egypt and Ethiopia” as a feat, referring to the dispute over the Nile’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. However, Egypt and Ethiopia have never been at war in living memory. Their rivalry over the dam has been a diplomatic dispute for many years. No shooting war broke out during construction or filling of the dam.
Experts note this is no “war” at all. After 13 years of talks there is still no final agreement on how to share the Nile’s water. Late in 2025 the dam was quietly inaugurated, but without any peace treaty – because none was needed. Ethiopian officials complained Trump was wrong to suggest US involvement. In short, there was no war to end, just ongoing negotiations.
Serbia–Kosovo
Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, but Serbia still does not recognize it. Tensions have flared occasionally, but no direct war has been fought since 1999. Nevertheless, Trump has treated this as another “war” he ended. In June 2025 he claimed Serbia and Kosovo were on the brink of war, but no fighting occurred. Independent reporting finds Trump’s boasts lack a real conflict to resolve. Relations remain tense, but no peace treaty has been signed and no war was halted. At best, dialogue was revived. Kosovo remains excluded from many international bodies and Serbia still considers it part of its territory.
Russia–Ukraine (‘The big one’)
Trump has claimed he can end the Ukraine war quickly. In late 2025 he dispatched envoys to push a new US peace initiative. So far, the war rages on. Ukraine has reportedly agreed to drop its Nato bid in exchange for security guarantees, but negotiations on territory remain deadlocked. Russian forces still occupy about one-third of Ukraine, and Kyiv refuses to cede land.
Even US diplomats acknowledge that a full ceasefire in Ukraine depends on resolving fundamental land claims. The Kremlin has likewise stated that any Christmas ceasefire proposed by Kyiv would “depend on reaching a peace deal first,” warning that Russia will not halt the war for short-term truces. While Reuters has reported that some observers see “for the first time… the possibility of a ceasefire,” Ukraine continues to insist on restoring its territorial integrity, and Russia demands guarantees that Ukraine will never join Nato.
So what’s the final score?
If Trump wants the world to keep score, the numbers matter. Eight wars were not ended, some ceasefires were announced, a few talks convened and one formal peace agreement signed. In most cases, however, fighting resumed quickly or never truly stopped. Several disputes Trump described as “wars” were either diplomatic stand-offs or long-frozen conflicts.
As history repeatedly shows, speeches are not settlements, and announcements are not peace.

Eritrean imam dies in ICE custody as detainee deaths hit 20-year high
Ulaa Kuziez
December 21, 2025
(RNS) — Fouad Saeed Abdulkadir, an Eritrean imam from Ohio and a 46-year-old green card holder, died while in immigration custody on Dec. 14 at a private detention facility in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Abdulkadir is one of four people who died while in immigration detention during a four-day period this month, raising alarm among advocates and some members of Congress about deteriorating conditions at immigrant detention facilities.
“Imam Fouad’s death underscores the deadly consequences of a detention system that routinely fails to provide adequate medical care, transparency, and basic human dignity,” the Council on American Islamic Relations’ Ohio and Pennsylvania chapters said in a statement.
The recent deaths bring the total number of detainees who have died to a two-decade high, with 30 deaths in ICE custody in 2025, the highest number since 2004, when 32 detainees died.
Abdulkadir complained of chest pains prior to his death and received CPR after he was transported to a hospital, according to an ICE news release. The cause of death is under investigation.
“Imam Fouad’s death is not an isolated tragedy, it is the predictable outcome of a violent detention system that continues to cage people for profit and punishment,” wrote the Shutdown Detention Campaign, an advocacy group calling for the closing of detention centers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Abdulkadir was held at the Moshannon Valley Processing Center for 215 days awaiting a hearing before immigration court. His death comes after Chinese immigrant Chaofeng Ge was found hanging in a shower stall with his hands and legs tied behind his back in August at the same facility. Frankline Bate Okpu, an immigrant from Cameroon, also died at Moshannon Valley Processing Center in 2023.
CAIR-Philadelphia executive director Ahmet Selim Tekelioglu called on Clearfield County Commissioners to shut down the detention center and to end their contracts with ICE and the private prison company GEO Group.
“It’s clear this facility is failing at its most basic duty: preserving human life,” Tekelioglu wrote in a Dec. 19 statement.
In a statement reporting Abdulkadir’s death, ICE said it is “committed to ensuring that all those in custody reside in safe, secure and humane environments.”
Abdulkadir was the spiritual leader of the Islamic Center of Northeast Ohio from summer of 2014 to approximately May of 2016.
While serving a 21-month sentence in a low-security federal prison for wire fraud, immigration enforcement officers issued a detainer for Abdulkadir and transferred him to Moshannon Valley Processing Center in July 2024, according to an ICE release.
Abdulkadir was born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and was a citizen of Eritrea. Janazah, or funeral, prayers were held on Dec. 19 before his burial at Interment West Park Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio, according to a post from Masjid Alomary. A Go FundMe for Abdulkadir’s funeral costs raised $13,000 as of Saturday.
The other three detainees who died between Dec. 12 – 15 were Jean Wilson Brutus, a 41-year-old Haitian immigrant held at Delaney Hall Detention Facility in Newark; Nenko Stanev Gantchev, a 56-year-old Bulgarian immigrant who died at the North Lake Processing Center in Baldwin, Michigan; Delvin Francisco Rodriguez, a 39-year-old Nicaraguan detainee in Natchez, Mississippi.

Video: Alabama Journalists Say Sen. Tuberville Has ‘Hatred for Islam,’ CAIR Designation as Anti-Muslim Extremist ‘Fits His Rhetoric’
December 21, 2025
I can tell you where the spirit of love is anything but abounding and that is with our Erstwhile, Tommy Tuberville, coach as he likes to be called as a grown man. And he has come out again and doubled down on his hatred for Islam, he’s calling Islam a cult. He is called to deport Islamic citizens of this country.
And he has now been designated an anti-Muslim extremist. And I think that designation fits his rhetoric.
It absolutely does. He’s now become the first Senator to be labeled an anti-Muslim extremist. How proud has the state got to be of that?
And he’s very proud of it, Josh. He posted on social media that he wears this hatred as a badge of honor. Now, I don’t think he really understands the Muslim faith at all, but I think he does understand racism and hate. I think he understands that perfectly. For a guy whose career was made on the backs of black men, of black he sure has shown his colors as, my interpretation, a racist Islamophobe. But again, that’s my opinion.

Ex-US national security adviser accuses CIA of working against Trump
22 Dec, 2025
Former US National Security Adviser Michael Flynn has alleged collusion between the CIA and European intelligence services to undermine President Donald Trump’s efforts to broker peace in Ukraine.
Flynn claimed in a post on X on Sunday that the CIA is “in cahoots with MI6 and others in the EU intelligence community,” reiterating his warning that the “deep state” is plotting against Trump.
“The EU aka NATO (minus the United States) desperately wants war with Russia,” Flynn wrote, adding that “warmongers in our own administration as well as the Congress want perpetual f’ing war.”
Flynn’s remarks echo recent statements by US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who accused Reuters of disseminating “lies and propaganda” about Russian intentions in order to undermine Trump’s diplomacy and promote escalation.
Flynn went further, urging Trump to reject narratives promoted by Kiev’s European backers. “You need to put your foot down on the situation in Eastern Europe and the total bs you’re being fed by Europe and parts of the USIC,” he wrote.
The former adviser also criticized what he described as a waste of US taxpayer money on funding Kiev, accusing Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky of suppressing opposition and delaying elections under the cover of war.
“We the People of the United States no longer want this war. We don’t want to spend another penny on a tin pot dictator who arrests opposition voices, including in his own Rada [Congress], and the media,” Flynn said.
Flynn’s comments come amid sensitive US-Russia backchannel talks in Miami, where Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev has been meeting with Trump confidants Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to discuss a potential peace framework. Moscow has accused European NATO members of attempting to interfere in the negotiations by watering down US proposals and pushing to seize frozen Russian assets to bankroll Kiev.
Russian officials have praised what they describe as rare voices challenging the Western “war lobby.” Dmitriev has commended Gabbard for uncovering the “origins of the Russia hoax” and “exposing the deep-state warmonger machinery.”

Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner pitches $112bn plan to turn Gaza rubble into a tech hub
Dec 22, 2025
Jared Kushner, former senior adviser to Donald Trump, is pitching a $112 billion proposal to rebuild the war-ravaged Gaza Strip into a futuristic technology and tourism hub, according to details first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
Kushner, 44, alongside US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, has been presenting a 32-slide PowerPoint titled Project Sunrise: Building a New and Unified Gaza to regional governments, including Turkey, Egypt and wealthy Gulf states. The document outlines a vision of Gaza transformed into a gleaming coastal metropolis featuring high-speed rail, AI-driven energy grids and luxury beachside resorts.
The plan estimates a total redevelopment cost of $112.1 billion over ten years. US support would cover roughly 20 per cent of direct funding, alongside additional loan guarantees and financial backstops that could bring Washington’s total exposure to nearly $60 billion.
The plan frames Gaza as a future investment destination and tourism hotspot but provides few concrete details about governance or long-term political arrangements. It also does not clearly explain where Gaza’s roughly two million displaced Palestinians would live during reconstruction, noting only that they would be housed in “temporary shelter, field hospitals and mobile clinics”.
The White House declined to comment directly on the proposal. However, spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said that the Trump administration remained committed to “laying the groundwork for a peaceful and prosperous Gaza”.
Middle East analysts have cast serious doubt on whether the proposal is viable. Council on Foreign Relations senior fellow Steven Cook said the project cannot move forward without the disarmament of Hamas, which he described as unlikely.
That condition is acknowledged within the presentation itself. The plan is explicitly tied to Hamas disarming, a requirement embedded in a broader, phased peace framework proposed by the Trump administration. Hamas has so far refused to lay down its weapons, effectively stalling further progress.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed those concerns, warning that investors would not commit funds if Gaza risks returning to war within a few years.
“You are not going to convince anyone to invest money in Gaza if they believe another war is going to happen,” Rubio said.
Even if political hurdles were cleared, the physical challenges remain immense. Reconstruction would require clearing an estimated 68 million tonnes of debris, removing unexploded ordnance and landmines, and recovering the bodies of Palestinians killed during the conflict.
Images from areas such as Khan Younis show vast stretches of flattened neighbourhoods, underscoring the scale of destruction that any redevelopment effort would have to overcome.
Kushner and Witkoff have previously used private business networks in diplomatic efforts, including during negotiations related to the Israel-Hamas conflict and, more recently, exploratory talks linked to the Russia-Ukraine war. Whether their glossy vision for Gaza can move beyond PowerPoint slides and into reality, however, remains deeply uncertain.

‘No one can rank my Americanness’: Indian-origin Mehek Cooke backs Vivek Ramaswamy’s rejection of ‘heritage Americanism’
Dec 22, 2025
Indian-origin MAGA lawyer and 'Trump surrogate' Mehek Cooke weighed in on the growing debate inside the US conservative movement, saying that 'Americanness ' cannot be ranked by ancestry. She backed GOP leader and fellow Indian-American Vivek Ramaswamy’s rejection of “heritage Americanism”.
Posting on X, Cooke said that she came into the US legally and embraced the American culture: “I am American. I came here legally and assimilated, our laws, culture, and shared standards. No one gets to rank my Americanness. The real divide is not heritage. It is legality and assimilation. Spoke with Vivek Ramaswamy backstage after his speech. That clarity wins.”
Her comments came after Ramaswamy delivered a fiery speech at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest event, where he criticised racism and antisemitism within sections of the right-wing movement, especially after recent comments of White nationalist and right-winger Nick Fuentes, who called vice president JD Vance's Hindu-Indian wife Usha a "jeet."
🚨 I am American. I came here legally and assimilated, our laws, culture, and shared standards.
No one gets to rank my Americanness. The real divide is not heritage. It is legality and assimilation.
Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek spoke to thousands of young conservatives and rejected the idea that Americans with colonial-era roots. He claimed that there is no reason someone is less of an American just because their families migrated more recently into the States.
“The idea of a heritage American is about as loony as anything the woke left has actually put up,” Ramaswamy compared the idea of heritage American to "woke left" during the address. He used an example of the MAGA chief himself: “It leads you to believe that Donald Trump is less of an American than Joe Biden, because Donald Trump’s mother was an immigrant.”
Ramaswamy condemned hatred directed at any ethnic or religious group: “If you believe in normalizing hatred towards any ethnic group, towards whites, towards blacks, towards Hispanics, towards Jews, towards Indians, you have no place in the future of the conservative movement."
Who is Mehek Cooke?
Mehek Cooke was born in India and moved to the United States as a child, later growing up in Ohio. As a trained lawyer, she now serves as president of American Frontier Strategies and has also worked in the Ohio Governor’s Office and the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio.
Cooke is a Trump loyalist and avid Republican who is also a regular media commentator. She has acted as a surrogate for the Republican National Committee, advising on immigration, elections and national security. Moreover, she agrees with Vive's idea that identity within America should not be measured by lineage, but by commitment to the country’s culture.

Abuja celebrates the sound of peace and unity with “Reggae”
December 22, 2025
As the rest of the world prepares for the end of the year festive period, Reggae fans and artists gathered in Abuja, Nigeria to celebrate Reggae festival 2025.
With its signature rhythm and beats, the genre has reached far beyond its Caribbean origins, becoming a global phenomenon that transcends cultural and geographic boundaries.
Reggae Artist, Christman, says Reggae music is used to preach love, peace, unity and humanity.
“The general perspective of Reggae is conscious music, anyone into Reggae music is seen as a prophet because Reggae is not something you pick and just run with it, it has to be in you, it is in born. So every Reggae musician is seen as a prophet. And every prophet comes with a message” he added.
“Everything about Reggae music takes me back to the time of Bob Marley and it gave me the platform to grow, I have always loved Reggae growing up and it actually impacted my music because I am a Rap artist”. Said Remy Salvany Artist.
Reggae music is deeply influenced by religious and cultural movements that emphasized African identity; however, African reggae artists are finding it harder to catch up with artists of other genres, in terms of sales and streaming numbers.
A UK based artist, Formidable said Reggae artists in other places outside Africa are doing well in the global stage compared to those in Nigeria “Most people in Reggae outside Nigeria, especially in the UK are basically underground artists, I know of Chucky in Portsmouth where I live, he is like the biggest there but when it comes to Nigeria, he is not really good as we sound” he said.
“All over the world, Reggae musicians want to come to Nigeria, I am from Nigeria and I have been to Jamaica and some part of South America and I see the way Reggae music is being celebrated around the world and yes they want to come to Nigeria because they believe Nigeria is the market for our kind of music” said Device, a Reggae Artist.
However, a Ghana Reggae artist, One Lord said most of them are doing very well within the continent. “Everyone doing Reggae music is doing well, everyone from different genres of music, we listen to Reggae, so Reggae artists are doing well, the sound speaks for itself, so everyone in Reggae is doing perfectly well.
Reggae is deeply influenced by Rastafarianism, a religious and cultural movement that emphasized African identity. In 2018, UNESCO designated Reggae music as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

I’ll Return To Defend My People, Sunday Igboho Warns FG
December 21, 2025
By George Oshogwe Ogbolu
Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has warned that he would return to Nigeria to defend his people if the government continues to fail in its duty to protect them from attacks by suspected armed Fulani assailants.
Igboho issued the warning following the killing of two residents of his hometown, Igboho, in Oyo State.
In a statement, Igboho said the latest incident confirmed the concerns he had raised over the past four years about what he described as persistent killings and violent attacks on Yoruba communities by armed Fulani elements.
He lamented that despite repeated appeals and warnings to authorities, the security situation had continued to worsen, forcing many indigenous residents to abandon their ancestral homes for fear of being killed.
“Today, two innocent people have been killed in Igboho. This is exactly what I have been warning the government about for years,” he said.
“Nothing has changed, and our people continue to suffer attacks while those responsible roam freely.”
Igboho accused the government of failing to adequately protect lives and property, saying insecurity had become a daily reality for residents of Igboho and neighbouring communities.
He stressed that the continued killings showed a breakdown of security and justice in the area.
The Yoruba activist called on both the Federal Government and the Oyo State Government to take immediate and decisive steps to stop the attacks and restore peace.
According to him, failure to act would leave him with no option but to return home to personally defend his community.
“I am calling on the government to act now and protect the lives and properties of the people of Igboho,” he said.
“If nothing is done, I will come back home to defend my people.”

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Abubakar, has declared Monday, December 22, 2025, as the first day of Rajab 1447 AH.
The declaration was contained in a statement released on Saturday, signed by the Wazirin Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Junaidu.
According to the statement, “The Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, in conjunction with the National Moon Sighting Committee, did not receive any report from various moon sighting committees across the country confirming the sighting of the crescent of Rajab 1447 AH on Saturday, 20th December, 2025, equivalent to 29th Jumada Assaniya 1447 AH.

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger launch Sahel regional force
December 22, 2025
At an airforce base in Bamako, Mali's army ruler General Assimi Goita presided over a ceremony marking the creation of a unified force for the Sahel countries.
The force is the latest in a series of measures by Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger to achieve closer integration.
The three countries are all led by juntas and are beset by an Islamist insurgency.
In January, Niger's defence minister said that the 5000-strong force would 'intervene together' to counter security threats in the region.
Burkinabe General Daouda Traoré was appointed to head the force which will maintain a command base in Niamey, Niger's capital.
The ceremony in Bamako was attended by the defence ministers of the Sahel Alliance member states, as well as ambassadors and representatives of international organizations accredited to Mali.
Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger formed the Sahel alliance after withdrawing from ECOWAS, which the alliance accuses of inhumane, coup-related sanctions and working against the interests of citizens in alliance countries.

Banks Ripping Us, Nigeria Under Planned Siege – Opadokun Speaks On Events Under Tinubu Govt
December 22, 2025
By Richard Ogunsile
A former Secretary-General of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, and a chieftain of the National Democratic Coalition, Ayo Opadokun, has declared that the rising insecurity across Nigeria is not accidental but the result of a long-planned plot by destructive forces within and outside the country.
Naija News reports that Opadokun stated this on Sunday, December 21, while speaking on the sidelines of his installation as the Grand Patron of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Offa Local Government Area branch, Kwara State.
The elder statesman said bandits and insurgents ravaging communities nationwide were being sponsored by different interests bent on destabilising the country.
“Some Nigerians, including agents who want to destabilise Nigeria and those who don’t want this government, had taken far-reaching decisions over and ahead of Nigeria a long time ago,” Opadokun said.
He described the prevailing security situation as deeply worrisome, warning that Nigeria had reached a dangerous point where non-state actors possessed weapons more sophisticated than those of the nation’s conventional armed forces.
‘Government Ignored Early Warnings’
According to Opadokun, successive governments were warned about the looming danger but failed to act decisively.
“But they never listened,” he said.
“I can say this without any fear of contradiction from any quarter. I was at Nicon Hilton in August 2022, where there was a four-day powerful meeting of elements comprising some Nigerians and Sahel region structures, planning how to overrun Nigeria. We’re all seeing the outcome now.
“We all heard what El-Rufai said. So, the current situation is not accidental. It’s a planned thing.”
He urged the Federal Government to intensify its fight against insurgency, stressing that there should no longer be mercy for bandits and those sponsoring them.
Tinubu Praised For Bold Economic Reforms
Opadokun commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as bold and far-reaching economic reforms, particularly in the area of taxation, saying the President was “taking a shot at fiscal federalism.”
“Last year, I told you that the tax reform bill would pass through. The new tax rule is taking a shot at fiscal federalism. By January next year, a large crowd of Nigerians will pay no tax at all because they don’t need to.
“What they are earning is not sufficient to take care of their welfare, and yet the state keeps harassing them.”
He added that the new tax regime would significantly affect major institutions, including banks.
“The banks have been ripping us off. People should appreciate what President Tinubu has succeeded in doing thus far. But he has not reached what we desire,” he said.
Reiterating NADECO’s long-standing position, Opadokun said the coalition’s ultimate goal remained the return of Nigeria to true constitutional governance.
“As NADECO members, our goal is for Nigeria to return to constitutional governance. This unitarised federal government was foisted on us by politicians in uniform. Nigeria has not produced its own home-grown constitution,” he said.
Reflecting on the state of the nation, Opadokun said Nigeria stood at a defining moment in its history as of December 2025.
“Nigeria stands at a critical point in its historical journey. The present administration has embarked on far-reaching structural reforms, particularly in the economic sphere, aimed at addressing long-standing systemic weaknesses,” he said.
He noted that while economic indicators showed some positive outlook, such gains would remain meaningless if they failed to improve the daily lives of ordinary Nigerians.
“These positive indicators will remain elitist pastimes until they translate into better quality of life for ordinary Nigerians,” the Afenifere chief stressed.
While expressing confidence in President Tinubu’s capacity to deliver, Opadokun acknowledged that the immediate social impact of the reforms had been harsh.
Opadokun said: “Inflation, rising cost of living, declining purchasing power, and pressure on small businesses and fixed-income earners have deepened public hardship. Any honest assessment must acknowledge that the burden of reform has fallen disproportionately on ordinary citizens.”
He said leadership during difficult times must be driven not only by decisiveness but also by empathy and transparent communication.
“Policies, no matter how well-intentioned, gain legitimacy only when citizens understand them and feel protected within the process,” he added.
On national security and cohesion, Opadokun warned that military action alone would not stabilise the country.
“Beyond force, national stability requires justice, inclusion, fairness, and continuous dialogue among Nigeria’s diverse peoples,” he said.
He cautioned against simplistic judgments of the Tinubu administration, noting that the country was undergoing a transition.
“The ultimate measure of this government will not rest solely on the boldness of its reforms, but on how effectively those reforms translate into dignity, opportunity, and hope for the average Nigerian,” Opadokun noted.
The elder statesman concluded by calling for restraint in public discourse, patience where necessary, and accountability across all levels of leadership.
“Constructive criticism, national unity, and a shared commitment to the common good remain essential if Nigeria is to emerge stronger from this difficult but defining period,” Opadokun said.

Why US Imposed Visa Restrictions On Nigerians – Ambassador
December 22, 2025
By George Oshogwe Ogbolu
The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has clarified that the recent visa restrictions imposed on Nigerians are part of broader security protocols and not targeted actions against Nigerian citizens.
Mills spoke on Sunday in Abuja during a press briefing held as part of the visit of a United States Congressional Delegation.
According to the ambassador, the measures are designed to strengthen security procedures and ensure thorough vetting of visa applicants.
“The presidential proclamation, effective January 1, 2026, affecting certain visa categories, is aimed at ensuring proper vetting and credible information in the visa process, not on penalising Nigerians,” Mills said.
Mills explained that the proclamation clearly outlines the visa categories that may be affected and also provides exemptions for certain groups.
These include holders of official and diplomatic passports, as well as individuals travelling for religious purposes.
The ambassador advised Nigerians seeking visas to consult the official website of the United States Embassy for detailed information on the affected visa categories and applicable exemptions.
He also encouraged applicants with specific concerns to use the embassy’s designated communication channels for clarification and guidance.
Also speaking at the briefing, U.S. Congressman and leader of the delegation, Bill Huizenga, said visa reviews and restrictions are standard global practices.
Huizenga noted that such measures are intended to encourage compliance and cooperation, rather than punish citizens of any particular country.
According to him, visa restrictions often focus on government systems and administrative processes and are routinely applied in different countries around the world.
He stressed that the measures should not be interpreted as actions directed specifically at Nigerians but as part of normal international security and immigration procedures.

‘I Swear By The Qur’an’ – Ex-aide Accuses Matawalle Of Colluding With Bandits, Hit Squads
December 22, 2025
By George Oshogwe Ogbolu
A former aide to the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has accused his former principal of colluding with security operatives to eliminate perceived enemies, protect allies, and facilitate dealings with notorious bandit leaders during his tenure as governor of Zamfara State.
Naija News reports that Matawalle served as Zamfara governor until 2023 and was appointed Minister of State for Defence by Bola Tinubu in August 2023.
The allegations were made by Musa Muhammad Kamara, also known as Musa Kamarawa, during an interview with Hausa-language media platform rHi Hausa.
Kamara identified himself as a former Senior Special Assistant to Matawalle when the latter was governor of Zamfara State.
“My name is Musa Muhammad Kamara. I am a citizen of Zamfara State and a former SSA to the former governor of Zamfara and now Minister of Defence, Dr Bello Matawalle,” he said.
Kamara alleged that Matawalle worked with police officers to eliminate those he considered enemies while shielding others.
“He has police officers working for him who kill whomever he orders and spare whomever he chooses,” Kamara claimed.
According to Kamara, his problems began in 2021 when he was invited by security operatives over allegations that the Zamfara State Government procured vehicles for bandits.
He said the claims followed remarks allegedly made by a cleric, Mallam Murtala Asada, that government officials bought vehicles for bandit leaders such as Bello Turji and Halilu Sububu.
“I explained to them that I’m SSA to the Governor and indeed the governor bought vehicles and gave it to them,” Kamara alleged, describing it as part of an engagement strategy at the time.
He further claimed that when one of the vehicles developed a fault, another was procured.
“I was the one that got them another Hilux,” he said.
Throughout the interview, Kamara repeatedly swore by the Holy Qur’an to affirm his claims and challenged Matawalle to publicly deny the allegations under oath.
“I swear by the Holy Qur’an that I’m speaking the truth,” he said, adding that Matawalle should also swear on the Qur’an if the claims were false.
Kamara further alleged that after he began speaking publicly, Matawalle colluded with elements of the Nigeria Police Force to target him.
“He conspired with the police… they sent them on errands to kill whoever he wants to kill and free whoever he wants to be free,” Kamara claimed.
He alleged that cases brought against him amounted to “media trials,” saying prosecutors repeatedly failed to produce witnesses in court.
Addressing speculation that he still has links with the Zamfara State Government or its current leadership, Kamara denied any such relationship.
“Since the day I left the Government House when Matawalle was governor, I have not gone back,” he said, adding that he has no connection with the present administration.
Kamara also alleged that Matawalle later used federal institutions to quietly terminate a case against him.
He claimed the matter was transferred to the Federal High Court in Abuja and eventually collapsed due to lack of evidence.
“There was no evidence, no witness, and the case was discharged,” he said.
Despite the case being struck out, Kamara said he still fears for his safety, alleging that powerful interests want him silenced.
“They do not want justice; they only want, at any time, to kill me and keep it silent,” he said.
As of the time of filing this report, Matawalle has not publicly responded to the allegations.

‘Okpebholo’s 2026 Budget Targets Infrastructure, Employment Opportunities’ – Okoebor
December 21, 2025
The Edo State Commissioner for Finance, Emmanuel Okoebor, has said the 2026 Appropriation Bill presented to the State House of Assembly by Governor Monday Okpebholo is strategically designed to accelerate infrastructure renewal, expand employment opportunities, and strengthen social services across the state.
Naija News reports that the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo, Ebojele Akhere Patrick, in a statement on Sunday, disclosed that Okoebor, while briefing journalists on the details of the bill, noted that the budget aligns with Okpebholo’s SHINE Agenda, which prioritises Security, Healthcare, Infrastructure, Natural Resources and Agriculture, and Education.
According to him, the administration deliberately prioritised sectors capable of unlocking productivity, reducing inequality, and integrating underserved communities into the state’s economic framework.
He said, “The 2026 budget represents a strategic shift from routine fiscal planning to impact-driven public finance, positioning the budget as a tool for structural correction and inclusive growth.
“Infrastructure dominates the budget, with ₦420.62 billion allocated to the sector. Of this amount, over ₦305 billion is earmarked for road construction and rehabilitation. Governor Okpebholo firmly believes that improved road networks will ease the movement of goods and people, reduce transaction costs, and improve access to healthcare, education, and markets, particularly in rural areas.”
Speaking on agriculture, which received ₦68 billion in targeted funding, the Commissioner said the allocation reflects the administration’s focus on food security, job creation, and rural stability. He added that the provision also supports livestock development through a dedicated ministry, providing a structured, preventive response to farmer–herder conflicts and strengthening agricultural value chains.
He added, “In the social sector, Okoebor said the budget provides for education and healthcare through the recruitment of teachers and health workers, as well as continued investment in schools and healthcare facilities. He noted that these measures are aimed at addressing manpower shortages and improving service delivery across both urban and rural communities.
“Job creation is another major feature of the 2026 budget, with ₦116.46 billion allocated to employment-related programmes. The allocation is expected to generate jobs through infrastructure development, agriculture, and expanded government activities.
“The budget also provides ₦8.9 billion for social welfare programmes targeting women, youth, and other vulnerable groups, as part of efforts to promote inclusive growth and shared prosperity.
“On governance and accountability, Okoebor said the administration has strengthened oversight mechanisms through improved procurement processes, the adoption of e-procurement systems, regular publication of budget implementation reports, and the activation of the Project Monitoring Unit.”

Akpabio Drags Natasha To Supreme Court Over Suspension From Senate
December 21, 2025
By Oladipo Abiola
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reportedly taken the matter involving the suspension of Kogi Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, from the Senate to the Supreme Court.
Naija News understands Akpabio is unsatisfied with the ruling of the Court of Appeal, which ruled that Akpabio’s case submission was fundamentally defective and incompetent, citing failure to comply with mandatory provisions of the Court of Appeal Rules.
Recall the appellate court had faulted the brief for multiple procedural violations, including unauthorized font size and line spacing, exceeding the 35-page limit, and failure to seek leave to regularise the defects.
According to a report by Vanguard, Akpabio’s lawyers have approached the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the judgment of the Appeal Court, which struck out the Federal Government’s brief of argument in the appeal.
They believe the apex court would rule in their favour because the Appeal Court had thrown out the case based on technicalities and not the substance of the matter.
The Senate President team argued that the Court of Appeal violated his constitutional right to a fair hearing by refusing to grant leave to correct the defective brief or permit him to exceed the page limit.
On their part, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal team has expressed confidence in the judiciary, saying the Supreme Court appeal is a last-ditch effort to overturn a decision reached in accordance with the law.
Sources within the Senate quoted by Vanguard said the case between Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan has become more of a power tussle, with the relationship between the two lawmakers remaining strained despite the return of the Kogi lawmaker to the Senate following her suspension.
“This is no longer just a legal disagreement. It has become a struggle over authority and control,” the source said.

Kota Kinabalu ustaz charged with 13 counts of causing injury after viral video shows helmet assault
PETALING JAYA: A religious instructor who was seen in a viral social media video striking madrasah students with a motorcycle helmet has been charged with 13 offences at the Sessions Court in Kota Kinabalu on Monday.
According to Sinar Harian, Kota Kinabalu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Kasim Muda confirmed that investigations into the case have been completed and the matter has been referred to prosecutors.
The case came to light following the circulation of a video recording on 14 December showing acts of violence against students at a premises in Telipok.
“Acting on this information, police conducted detailed investigations and arrested the suspect, who is also the operator or instructor of the madrasah in question, to assist with enquiries,” Kasim said.
The investigation papers were submitted to the Attorney General’s Chambers on 17 December. Following instructions received, the suspect was charged in court on 22 December under Section 323 of the Penal Code, facing 13 separate charges related to causing injury.
Kasim emphasised that authorities view any form of violence seriously, particularly cases involving children.
“In this regard, firm action will be taken in accordance with existing laws,” he stated.
The police chief also advised members of the public not to engage in speculation or spread unverified information, and to respect the legal process and privacy of all parties involved, especially the victims.
Kasim provided assurance that the Kota Kinabalu district police headquarters will investigate every case professionally, transparently, and in accordance with the law for the sake of justice and public order.
The case has drawn significant attention on social media, with many expressing concern over the welfare of children in educational institutions. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding vulnerable students and maintaining proper standards of care in all learning environments.
All 13 charges relate to separate instances of causing injury to students under his care. The Sessions Court proceedings will determine the outcome of these serious allegations.

Preserving Malay traditional villages in Federal Territories remains priority, says Hannah Yeoh
22 Dec 2025
PUTRAJAYA, Dec 22 — Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh has assured that the preservation of Malay traditional villages in the Federal Territories, including Kampung Baru, will remain a priority for her.
She said the conservation of these villages across Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan aligns with the government’s commitment to safeguarding the heritage of local communities amidst urban development.
Hannah highlighted her record as the Member of Parliament for Segambut, which demonstrates her consistent stance on defending the interests of traditional Malay villages, including Kampung Sungai Penchala.
“Regarding the preservation of Malay traditional villages in the Federal Territories, don’t worry. You can check my record; I’ve always been vocal about the importance of preserving these villages,” she told the media after her official reporting alongside her deputy, Datuk Lo Su Fui, here today.
Hannah pointed out that commercial buildings are easily found, but traditional Malay villages are increasingly rare and must be protected as part of the nation’s heritage and identity.
“Commercial buildings are easy to find, but traditional villages are becoming harder to come by. We need to follow the law, but first, I will receive a briefing from the relevant agencies,” she said.
On the issue of Kampung Baru, Hannah said her team would gather the latest information from the Legal Advisor (PUU) and all involved officials before making any decisions.
She noted that the Kampung Baru issue is not new and has been raised and debated in Parliament multiple times.
“I have discussed this with Titiwangsa MP Datuk Seri Johari Ghani, and we will continue the work that was started by former Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha.
“I won’t comment further until I receive an update and ensure that there has been in-depth discussion before we make any decisions,” she said.
On the topic of local government (PBT) elections, Hannah emphasised that decisions cannot be made by a single party, as it involves the Unity Government.
“For local elections, don’t worry. No single party can move forward on its own. This is the Unity Government, which means we need to discuss and agree with all the parties involved,” she added.
Hannah also stressed that the Federal Territories must remain safe and livable, not only for the younger generations but also for senior citizens who choose to retire in these areas.
She addressed concerns that her appointment might signal an opposition to development, clarifying that she supports responsible and sustainable development.
“I am never against development, but I oppose unsustainable development. In Kuala Lumpur, we must be cautious about heavy rain, landslides, and flash floods. When flash floods occur, the damage to properties is enormous,” she said, referring to the major floods in the capital in 2021.
According to Hannah, the concerns of local communities must be taken seriously, especially when development projects could increase environmental risks.
She said her administration would focus more on improving basic municipal services rather than overemphasising events, ensuring that residents feel their assessment payments are justified.
“We want residents who pay assessment fees to feel satisfied, knowing their basic needs are being properly taken care of,” she added.
Hannah also emphasised the importance of adhering to existing laws and planning frameworks, adding that MPs must be consulted before any development approval is granted.
“When discussing development, it is very important to engage with the local representative - the MP, because they understand the concerns of the people and the issues on the ground.
“As an MP, I know how important it is to engage with them first, especially if the proposed development conflicts with the gazetted local plan,” she said. — Bernama

Malaysia introduces SPTM, aiming to make tahfiz centres models of excellence
21 Dec 2025
BAGAN DATUK, Dec 21 — The government today launched the Malaysia Tahfiz Recognition Standard (SPTM), which will be implemented in stages beginning next year, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said the SPTM aims to enhance the quality of tahfiz education and serve as a formal recognition mechanism for huffaz (memorisers of the Quran) and tahfiz institutions.
Under the initiative, as part of efforts to encourage a culture of excellence, the 10 best tahfiz institutions that achieve outstanding performance based on the SPTM criteria will each receive an incentive of RM50,000.
“This is not merely a figure or a monetary reward, but a motivational boost to encourage tahfiz institutions to continuously improve their quality and best practices, and to become centres of excellence that can, insya-Allah, serve as models for tahfiz institutions in Malaysia,” he said.
He said this when officiating the opening of the 2025 Huffaz Gathering and Nusantara Da’wah Symphony at Masjid Tuminah Hamidi here today. — Bernama

Consumer claims tribunal orders travel company to pay RM30,000 over misleading 2025 Hajj package
22 Dec 2025
KOTA KINABALU, Dec 22 — The Consumer Claims Tribunal ordered A travel company to pay RM30,000 in compensation to a man after finding the company had misled him over a 2025 Hajj package.
Tribunal President Salmi Zalinah Abdul Rahim said the Respondent’s conduct amounted to misleading and false representation, which ultimately caused the claimant to fail in performing his Hajj, on Wednesday.
She made the decision after evaluating witness statements, photos, WhatsApp conversations and supporting documents submitted by both parties.
According to the facts of the case, the claimant, Azrie Salfie attended a briefing conducted by Shahid Travel &Tours Sdn Bhd, Respondent’s director on Jan 10, 2025, where he decided to purchase a standard Hajj package priced at RM59,900 per person.
He was informed that Visa Mujammalah would cost an additional RM20,000 to RM25,000 if pilgrims chose to apply for it.
However, the Respondent assured him that he did not need Visa Mujammalah, claiming it would secure official Hajj visas through the Saudi Arabian embassy, as it allegedly had done in previous years. The claimant was later instructed to pay an additional RM4,000 before travelling to Kuala Lumpur.
Upon arrival, the claimant and other pilgrims were told that all visa arrangements would only be given upon reaching Jeddah.
Once there, they discovered they had not received any Hajj visas or identification passes, rendering them unable to complete the pilgrimage.
The tribunal found that the Respondent failed to prove it had informed pilgrims that they would be travelling on tourist visas rather than official Hajj visas.
It also noted that the Respondent’s brochure clearly advertised a Hajj package, and that its claim of sudden entry restrictions by Saudi authorities in 2025 was false.
This was contradicted by a Malaysian Embassy advisory issued on May 20, 2024, reminding Malaysians to ensure they had valid Hajj visas before travelling.
Salmi ruled that the Respondent’s actions breached Sections 9(b) and 10(1)(c) and (e) of the Consumer Protection Act 1999, which prohibit misleading conduct and false representation regarding services.

Malaysia’s Gaza volunteers show nation’s solidarity, says PM Anwar
22 Dec 2025
PM Anwar Ibrahim praises Malaysian volunteers on Gaza flotilla as a symbol of national solidarity and commitment to humanitarian principles
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the courage of Malaysian humanitarian volunteers in Gaza has become a symbol of the nation’s steadfast commitment to universal principles.
He said that as major world powers remained silent, Malaysia openly supported the Global Sumud Flotilla’s humanitarian mission to the besieged enclave.
“When the flotilla was attacked by Israeli forces on Oct 2, and the humanitarian volunteers, including 23 Malaysians, were detained, we acted swiftly without delay,” Anwar posted on Facebook.
He stated that every moment was used to devise strategies and mobilise diplomatic channels to ensure the volunteers’ safety as the nation’s absolute priority.
High-level negotiations with Turkiye, Egypt, Jordan and the United States led to the safe release of all Malaysian volunteers, who returned home on Oct 7.
“Their bravery in crossing the seas and their steadfast resolve in defending our brothers and sisters in Palestine, despite being treated harshly in Israeli detention, reflect the strength of Malaysia’s solidarity,” Anwar said.
He expressed hope that this courage would continue to guide Malaysia to stand firmly with Gaza until justice is upheld for a free Palestine.
The Global Sumud Flotilla aid mission involved more than 500 activists from 44 countries, including Malaysia.
It began its voyage to Gaza in late August and early September to show solidarity and break Israel’s blockade by delivering essential supplies.
The aid flotilla was intercepted by Israeli forces in a restricted zone of the Mediterranean Sea on Oct 2, with all volunteers forcibly taken to the Port of Ashdod.

Malaysian authorities allegedly blocked French probe into Nora Quoirin’s death
22 Dec 2025
French investigation into Nora Quoirin’s death stalled, family claims Malaysian authorities not cooperating; case remains open
PETALING JAYA: Malaysian authorities were alleged to have refused to cooperate with French judicial investigators looking into the 2019 death of teenager Nora Quoirin, despite six years of persistent requests for assistance, the victim’s family revealed this week.
The Quoirin family disclosed on December 19 (Friday), that the authorities continue to deny all requests for mutual legal assistance, citing an ongoing local investigation as justification for non-cooperation.
Meeting with their appointed judge at the Courts of Justice in Paris, Nora’s parents Sebastien and Meabh Quoirin learnt that the Attorney General’s office has determined that sharing information would “prejudice the criminal matter in Malaysia.”
Nora Anne Quoirin, a 15-year-old French-Irish teenager from Balham, south London, vanished in August 2019 whilst on family holiday at a resort in Seremban. Her unclothed body was discovered 10 days later beside a stream in dense jungle approximately 1.9 kilometres from the resort.
The teenager, who attended a school for young people with learning difficulties, had limited verbal communication and struggled with balance and mobility. Whilst she could walk on flat surfaces, uneven terrain posed significant challenges.
On June 16, 2021, in a significant development to the unsolved case, the Seremban High Court had previously overturned an inquest coroner’s conclusion that Nora died from “misadventure” – a finding that suggested she had wandered into the jungle alone.
Then-High Court judge Azizul Azmi Adnan instead issued an open verdict, which leaves room for possible criminal involvement and could enable further investigations.
“The balance and coordination issues she faced, together with the fact she tired easily, establish in my view that it would have been unlikely that the death was result of misadventure,” Azizul reportedly stated.
The judge had reportedly noted that Nora was “a shy and retiring child who was incurious and unadventurous and who was strongly attached emotionally to her parents.” She was also described as uncomfortable with unfamiliar situations.
Azizul had also highlighted several factors that cast doubt on the misadventure theory. The resort sat on a steep hill that would have been extremely difficult for Nora to navigate in darkness. To exit the compound, she would have needed to climb over damaged fencing or squeeze through gaps in the resort’s gate.
The terrain beyond the resort was equally challenging. “In order to get to the location where she was eventually found she would have had to have crossed rocky streams and to have gone up and down steep slopes,” the judge observed, noting that even able-bodied, well-equipped adults found the site difficult to access during court proceedings.
Nora was barefoot when she disappeared. The judge also questioned how she could have evaded detection for six days, the period she is believed to have survived in the jungle.
During the course of the case, resort owner Haanim Bamadhaj previously acknowledged that the chalet window was broken and could have been opened from outside. Some fencing around the property was also damaged.
Nora’s parents reported hearing muffled sounds in their holiday chalet the night their daughter vanished. They have criticised police for what they perceived as a slow response, noting that fingerprints were not taken from the chalet until several days after Nora’s disappearance.
The police maintained throughout their investigation that they found no evidence of criminal activity or abduction. An autopsy determined that Nora likely died from starvation and stress. A British pathologist who conducted a second post-mortem examination concurred with these findings, though noted that severe decomposition made it impossible to completely rule out sexual assault.
France opened a parallel investigation in 2019 to examine the possibility of kidnapping, given Nora’s French citizenship. Over six years, French authorities have conducted extensive enquiries, interviewing friends, neighbours, and teachers to establish a comprehensive factual background.
Despite these efforts, the Malaysian authorities has consistently refused all requests for judicial cooperation.
In their statement, the Quoirin family expressed frustration: “Once again, we are faced with a refusal to search for and deliver the truth. Preferring silence and obscuring of international justice, over the defence of an innocent child.”
However, they vowed to continue seeking answers, thanking their French lawyer Maître Charles Morel and the French justice system for ongoing support.
Responding to the earlier court ruling, Meabh Quoirin had told the BBC: “Nora was always going to be worth fighting for and this is the verdict we wanted. It was really the only reasonable verdict open to us in the sense that the proof that we had could only really lead to this road as a credible one.”
The case remains open in both Malaysia and France, though the lack of international cooperation continues to frustrate efforts to establish what happened to Nora Quoirin in August 2019.

‘Asean talks may secure ceasefire, not full solution’
22 Dec 2025
ASEAN foreign ministers meet to address Cambodia-Thailand border tensions, seeking ceasefire and resumed dialogue despite ongoing conflict
PETALING JAYA: While a full resolution is unlikely, today’s Asean Foreign Ministers’ Meeting could at least secure a ceasefire and reopen talks between the General Border Committees of Thailand and Cambodia, analysts say.
Nusantara Academy of Strategic Research senior fellow Prof Dr Azmi Hassan said the meeting being held at the foreign minister level highlights the work still required on the ground, particularly along the disputed border.
He cautioned against setting overly high expectations but said if talks proceed smoothly, there may be no need to escalate the matter to the prime ministerial level.
“The most important outcome would be for a ceasefire to be agreed upon by the foreign ministers.
Thailand agreed to attend the meeting to demonstrate the realities on the ground, while Cambodia also wants Asean’s involvement and without it, might have sought the intervention of the global community due to military pressure from Thailand.”
Azmi said the most realistic outcome would be for the General Border Committees of Thailand and Cambodia to resume dialogue, a key step in preventing further escalation.
“This step is very important as it will help prevent the situation from escalating further.”
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Centre for Development, Social and Environment, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Prof Dr Novel Lyndon said both countries agreeing to Asean-facilitated talks shows diplomatic channels remain open despite ongoing tensions.
“This makes the meeting a feasible conflict-management intervention, even if it cannot serve as a full conflict-resolution mechanism.”
Lyndon added that Asean’s credibility lies in preventing escalation rather than imposing solutions, noting that the Cambodia–Thailand case highlights the bloc’s limits and the risk of being sidelined due to direct interstate tensions and external involvement by major powers.
Based on Asean’s track record, he said success should be defined realistically, as the bloc has never enforced binding outcomes in interstate disputes but has facilitated ceasefires, joint statements and monitoring arrangements.
“A successful outcome would include formal reaffirmation of restraint by both parties, agreement to sustain dialogue under Asean guidance and acceptance of confidence-building or observer mechanisms,” he said, stressing that these align with Asean’s historical role in de-escalation rather than adjudication.
Lyndon emphasised that Asean-led meetings are effective at containing disputes but weak as enforcement tools.
“Historical evidence shows that such meetings help keep conflicts within diplomatic channels, prevent isolation and reduce the risk of uncontrolled escalation.
However, they rarely produce decisive outcomes because Asean lacks coercive authority and relies on voluntary compliance. This pattern has been consistent across issues ranging from territorial disputes to internal political crises within member states.”
He added that from a political sociology perspective, these outcomes still matter as they maintain Asean’s relevance, signal collective concern, and stabilise regional expectations.
“We have to understand the main role of Asean is to encourage mutual respect and non-interference, which reduces conflicts in the region.”
Today, Malaysia will host the special meeting of Asean foreign ministers in Kuala Lumpur to address the Cambodia–Thailand situation, chaired by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. The session follows a decision by the prime ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand on Dec 11.
Border tensions flared in July, resulting in several days of armed clashes before a ceasefire was agreed on July 28. Both countries later signed the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord on Oct 26 during the 47th Asean Summit.
However, hostilities have resurfaced in recent weeks, causing fatalities and displacing thousands of residents.

Pakistan Army Chief Says 70 Percent of TTP Fighters Are Afghan Nationals
By Fidel Rahmati
December 21, 2025
Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir claimed 70 percent of TTP fighters entering Pakistan are Afghan nationals, urging Taliban action to secure borders.
Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, has claimed that 70 percent of Tehreek‑e‑Taliban Pakistan (TTP) fighters entering Pakistan are Afghan nationals, escalating security tensions with Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers.
Kabul has yet to respond publicly to General Asim Munir’s claims regarding Afghan nationals in the TTP ranks.
Speaking at a national scholars’ conference in Islamabad, General Munir emphasized that the majority of TTP operatives crossing into Pakistan originate from Afghanistan. He urged the Taliban leadership to take concrete measures to prevent militants from using Afghanistan territory as a base for attacks in Pakistan.
Pakistan has frequently cited security concerns as a major reason for increasing deportations of Afghan migrants, arguing that militants exploit the porous border to launch cross‑border attacks and destabilize Pakistani regions.
The TTP has been a central topic in recent high-level talks between Pakistan and Taliban representatives in Istanbul. Despite ongoing negotiations, both sides have struggled to agree on measures to control militant movements and improve border security.
Relations between Pakistan and the Taliban have grown increasingly strained over the past two months, with intermittent border closures disrupting trade and commerce, adding economic pressure to the already tense security situation.
Analysts say that Pakistan’s concerns highlight the broader regional security challenge posed by militant groups exploiting unstable areas. Effective monitoring, intelligence sharing, and coordinated action remain essential to curb cross-border terrorism. Source: khaama.com

Nine Afghans killed in Balochistan road crash
By Fidel Rahmati
December 22, 2025
Nine Afghan nationals were killed and 10 others injured when an oil tanker collided with a pickup truck in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, local media reported.
Nine Afghan citizens were killed and at least 10 others injured after an oil tanker collided with a pickup truck in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province, Pakistani media reported on Sunday.
The crash occurred near the remote town of Nokkundi in Chagai district, close to the Iran border, an area frequently used by migrants travelling along unofficial and hazardous routes, according to local authorities.
Mohammad Sharif, the Chagai district police chief, said the tanker struck the pickup vehicle with significant force, killing all nine passengers on board at the scene.
Police said the injured were rushed to nearby medical facilities, adding that several victims remain in serious condition due to the severity of their injuries.
Authorities confirmed that all those killed were Afghan nationals who had entered Pakistan illegally and were attempting to travel onward to Iran and eventually Europe using smuggling networks.
International media and migration organisations say irregular migration from Afghanistan has surged since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, driven by economic collapse, rising unemployment and limited job opportunities.
Human rights groups warn that migrants using informal routes through Pakistan and Iran face serious risks, including fatal road accidents, human trafficking and abuse, underscoring the growing dangers of irregular migration from Afghanistan.

Jamaat seeks gunman, police protection for its ameer
Dec 22, 2025
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has sought round-the-clock deployment of a gunman for its ameer, Dr Shafiqur Rahman, and the posting of armed police personnel for the security of his residence.
The party sent a letter to the home adviser with the request, which was received at the ministry on December 21.
The letter, a copy of which The Daily Star obtained, said Jamaat has long been engaged in what it described as a "just struggle" to establish people's fundamental rights, build a justice-based society and consolidate democracy, and that it has become a popular political party through that process.
It claimed that during the previous "fascist" government, Jamaat's leadership faced "inhuman" torture, oppression, killings and enforced disappearances. The party further alleged that for building movements against "wrongdoing and misdeeds",
its leaders became targets of "Awami terrorists", and that after the "July uprising" those elements chose "killings and attacks", which it said recent incidents prove.
The letter was signed by AFM Abdus Sattar, office secretary of Jamaat.
Referring to the upcoming election, Jamaat said it fears an increase in activities by what it described as "Awami terrorists" to foil the national election.
The party said Shafiqur's political activities have increased as party chief and that he is travelling across the country to hold wayside gatherings and rallies.
The letter said appointing a gunman for his round-the-clock security and deploying armed police personnel for the security of his residence was "urgent", and requested the home adviser to take steps accordingly.
A copy of the letter was also sent for information and necessary action to the inspector general of police at Police Headquarters, the DMP commissioner, and the additional IGP (Special Branch).
Confirming the development, Chief of Special Branch and additional inspector general of police Golam Rasul said, "We have received the letter; now we will analyse the security threats and then take steps accordingly."
On December 13, a core committee meeting on law and order decided that a gunman can be assigned to high-profile candidates and that security at residences assessed to be at high risk can be improved.
On December 15, in a major development, the government issued policy guidelines on granting firearm licences and appointing retainers, persons to carry firearms, to individuals who are politically important and candidates contesting the national election.
Based on scrutiny and threat analysis, these individuals will be provided security or be granted a firearms licence, along with election candidates.
The development comes amid growing concern over candidates' security in the wake of the shooting of Sharif Osman Hadi, one of the frontliners of last year's July uprising and an MP aspirant for Dhaka-8, a day after the election schedule was announced.
After fighting for his life for six days, Hadi died on December 18 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Singapore.
A home ministry source said intelligence agencies have also identified around 200 high-profile individuals, including 157 student coordinators across the country who played an important role during the July uprising, and that the government is planning to provide security for them based on security assessments.

Press on for justice over Hadi murder
Dec 22, 2025
Sharif Omar Bin Hadi, elder brother of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, has expressed doubts over justice for his brother's killing and urged the people to continue the movement.
He said if the people truly loved his brother, sought justice for his murder and wanted Shahbagh to be established free from fascism and Indian hegemony, they must carry on with the movement.
He made the remarks yesterday at a doa mahfil organised by Jamaat-e-Islami at the Al-Falah auditorium in the capital's Moghbazar, marking the martyrdom of Osman Hadi, an aspirant for Dhaka-8.
On December 12, Osman Hadi was attacked while travelling by rickshaw near the water tank area in the capital's Bijoynagar. Two assailants arrived on a motorcycle and shot him at close range before fleeing.
Osman Hadi, who was later flown by air ambulance to Singapore for advanced treatment, died on Thursday.
Amid the state mourning on Saturday, he was laid to rest beside the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam in the Dhaka University area following his janaza, attended by hundreds of thousands of people.
At the doa mahfil, Omar Bin Hadi recalled his brother's struggle to establish an "Insaaf-based Bangladesh".
He stated that they were not seeking any financial assistance or donations for Osman Hadi's family. "Our only demand is that you complete Osman Hadi's unfinished revolution. If you agree, pledge that you will not rest until an Insaaf-based Bangladesh is established."
Meanwhile, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar, who presided over the doa mahfil, said the nation was concerned about who among the July fighters might be targeted next after Osman Hadi.
Calling on the government to take swift action, he said the shooting and killing of Hadi left candidates in all 300 constituencies worried about their safety.
The Jamaat leader said, "A section of journalists and stakeholders are saying on television talk shows, and poets and writers are writing, as if there can be no election unless the Awami League participates. Through this narrative, anti-hegemony forces are being taken to the brink at gunpoint."
He added that the shooting of a candidate the day after the election schedule was announced showed it was not an isolated incident but part of a "package programme".
The Jamaat leader opined that the chief adviser and the chief election commissioner could not evade the responsibility for the killing.
It is shameful that the chief election commissioner termed the attack an isolated incident, he said.
According to Porwar, attempts to re-establish "fascists" into the polity in the name of an inclusive election and a "refined Awami League" would not be accepted by the people, as it would endanger the nation's identity.
He also urged the government to place before the nation the steps taken so far to arrest the killers of Osman Hadi and ensure justice.
"If the killers have fled abroad, there are foreign missions and embassies, as well as various mechanisms, including prisoner exchange agreements with India. All of these must be used. The United Nations has expressed interest in investigating Osman Hadi's killing; if necessary, their logistical support should be taken," he said.

The Daily Star, Prothom Alo attackers identified: Religious adviser
Dec 21, 2025
Religious Affairs Adviser AFM Khalid Hossain today said several people involved in the arson attack on the offices of The Daily Star and Prothom Alo have been identified.
While speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, he confirmed that steps are underway to arrest them and bring them under the law.
The adviser condemned the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a garment worker in Bhaluka, who was beaten and burned to death. Terming the act "heinous," he stressed that the government will not allow anyone to take the law into their own hands.
Regarding the attack on the cultural organisation Chhayanaut in Dhaka, Khalid Hossain said setting fire to institutions and burning people to death are unjust and unacceptable crimes.
He reiterated the government's determination to punish the perpetrators.
On the night of December 19, The Daily Star and Prothom Alo came under a deliberate and organised attack. Both newspapers suspended publication the following day but resumed on December 21 under special arrangements. Their offices, however, remain in ruins.

EU says 21 million lack access to safe drinking water in Afghanistan
By Fidel Rahmati-
December 22, 2025
More than 21 million people lack access to safe drinking water in Afghanistan, the European Union says, as conflict, climate change and weak infrastructure worsen shortages.
The lack of access to safe drinking water remains one of the most serious humanitarian challenges in Afghanistan, affecting millions across the country.
According to the European Union’s humanitarian aid office for Asia, more than 21 million people in Afghanistan do not have access to clean water, a situation worsened by years of conflict, damaged infrastructure, and deteriorating climate conditions.
The EU office said water scarcity has intensified in both urban and rural areas, forcing families to rely on unsafe sources that increase the risk of disease, particularly among children.
To ease the crisis, the EU’s humanitarian partners are installing wells and hand pumps for vulnerable households, aiming to provide sustainable access to safe drinking water.
In a related effort, the Norwegian Refugee Council recently completed a water supply network serving around 300 families in Zabul province, offering relief to communities long affected by drought and poverty.
The United Nations Children’s Fund has previously warned that Kabul’s groundwater could be fully depleted by 2030 if current trends continue, posing a serious threat to the capital’s future.
UNICEF has also reported that eight out of ten people in Afghanistan consume contaminated water, underlining the urgent need for continued international assistance to prevent a deepening public health emergency.

Bush Center Criticizes U.S. Suspension of Afghan Migrant Program
By Fidel Rahmati
December 21, 2025
The George W. Bush Presidential Center criticized the U.S. decision to suspend Afghan immigration, saying it punishes allies who risked their lives supporting American forces over decades.
The George W. Bush Presidential Center has criticized the U.S. government’s decision to halt acceptance of Afghan migrants who assisted American forces, calling the move contrary to core U.S. values.
The Center emphasized that tens of thousands of Afghans risked their lives over the past two decades by collaborating with the United States and its international allies, providing crucial support in military and humanitarian operations.
The policy shift follows the shooting by Abdul Rahman Lakanwal, a former Afghan soldier accused of killing a U.S. National Guard member in Washington. In response, the Trump administration suspended asylum and immigration approvals for Afghans and several other nationalities.
As a result of the suspension, thousands of Afghans still trapped in Afghanistan will be denied U.S. visas, while the cases of refugees already in the country are undergoing renewed review, raising concern among advocacy groups and congressional members.
Sixty-one U.S. lawmakers wrote to the Secretaries of State and Homeland Security, condemning the administration for exploiting the actions of one individual to impose sweeping restrictions on Afghan migrants. They warned that the policy spreads fear and uncertainty across Afghanistan communities in the United States.
Immigration attorneys and refugee advocates in Sacramento, California, home to one of the largest Afghan populations in the U.S.—reported a surge in arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with at least 24 Afghan migrants detained since early December, including nine last week alone. Analysts warn the suspension risks leaving thousands of Afghan allies vulnerable to Taliban retribution, undermining U.S. credibility and calling for urgent, humane immigration reforms.
Lakanwal, who arrived in the U.S. in 2021 with his wife and five young children under the “Welcome Allies” program, has been formally charged with first-degree murder. The Bush Center stressed that the shooter alone is responsible, and Afghan migrants should not face collective punishment.

Fire Ravages Kabul’s Mandawi Market, Causing $700,000 in Losses
By Fidel Rahmati
December 21, 2025
A large fire tore through Kabul’s historic Mandawi market early Sunday, destroying dozens of shops and causing an estimated $700,000 in losses, officials said.
A large fire swept through Kabul’s historic Mandawi market early Sunday, causing an estimated $700,000 in losses and destroying dozens of shops, officials said, highlighting persistent safety risks in the capital’s commercial areas.
The blaze broke out before dawn in a shoe market inside Mandawi, one of Kabul’s oldest and busiest wholesale centres for imported goods such as footwear, clothing and household items. Thick smoke and towering flames were seen engulfing tightly packed rows of shops, according to images shared on social media.
Taliban Interior Ministry said the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit, a problem traders and experts say is common in markets with aging wiring and limited safety oversight.
Firefighters were dispatched with several water tankers and worked for hours to bring the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to neighbouring sections of the market, the ministry said.
No casualties were reported, but the fire left dozens of traders facing heavy financial losses. Local merchants said most shops in Mandawi are uninsured, leaving owners with little protection against such disasters.
Traders have called on the authorities to provide emergency assistance, while the Interior Ministry said it would investigate the incident. The incident has renewed scrutiny of fire safety in Kabul, where similar blazes in crowded markets have previously been blamed on faulty wiring, lack of fire exits and inadequate firefighting equipment, underscoring the need for urgent infrastructure upgrades.
This comes amid a deepening humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, with the United Nations estimating that nearly 90% of the population lives below the poverty line, unable to meet basic needs such as food, healthcare and shelter.
Unemployment has surged to around 75%, UN agencies say, exacerbating hardship as the country also faces an influx of nearly three million returnees from Iran and Pakistan, further straining limited resources and aid efforts.
