Hate Crime: Court Orders FIR Against SHO Who Allegedly Forced Some Muslims To Sing National Anthem During The 2020 Delhi Violence

February 1, 2025

Screenshot of video in which Faizan was purpotedly forced to sing national anthem

------------

A Delhi court has ordered the registration of an FIR against the Station House Officer (SHO) of Jyoti Nagar police station following a complaint by a Muslim man who claimed he was among those forced to sing Vande Mataram and the national anthem during the 2020 anti-Muslim pogrom in Delhi.

The case relates to a widely circulated video showing a group of Muslim men being brutally beaten by the police while being coerced into singing patriotic songs. Among them was 23-year-old Faizan, who died 24 hours after his release from Jyoti Nagar police station due to custodial torture.

Mohd. Wasim filed a complaint in July 2020 seeking an FIR against the accused policemen. However, after no action was taken, he approached the Karkardooma Court, requesting an investigation. He alleged that the police had beaten them, forced them to chant slogans like Jai Shri Ram and Vande Mataram, and subjected them to inhumane treatment.

Judicial Magistrate First Class Udbhav Kumar Jain ordered the registration of an FIR against the SHO under Sections 295A (outraging religious feelings), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

The judge directed that a responsible officer, not below the rank of Inspector, conduct the investigation and determine the involvement of other unidentified police officials.

The Court criticized the action taken report (ATR) submitted by Delhi Police, which denied the allegations but failed to provide evidence of any preliminary inquiry. It ruled that the SHO and other officers had engaged in hate crimes and could not be shielded under the pretext of official duty.

In August last year, the Delhi High Court transferred the investigation into Faizan’s death to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The court condemned the actions of the Delhi Police, calling Faizan’s death a “hate crime” and attributing it to “unlawful actions driven by religious bigotry.”

The court’s directive to file an FIR marks a significant development in holding law enforcement accountable for alleged police brutality during the 2020 violence. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights organizations, who have long demanded justice for the victims of police excesses during the riots.

As the legal process unfolds, the case is expected to test the commitment of authorities to addressing custodial violence and ensuring justice for those affected by communal hate crimes. — With Agencies Inputs

President Murmu Backs Waqf Law Amendment, One Nation, One Poll Bill In Parliament Address

Feb 01, 2025

New Delhi, Jan 31 (ANI): President Droupadi Murmu along with Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a procession to address the joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on the first day of the Budget Session, in New Delhi on Friday. (ANI Photo)

--------------

President Droupadi Murmu on Friday backed key draft legislations on simultaneous polls and Waqf Bill changes besides patting the government for “tripling” the pace of work in its third term.

In a wide-ranging address to the joint sitting of Parliament on the first day of the Budget session, Murmu lauded the decade-long rule of the BJP-led NDA for as one that addressed policy paralysis, ensured cultural revival, powered women led development and raised India’s global profile.

“The pace of work has tripled in the third term of this government. Today, the nation is witnessing major decisions and policies being implemented at an extraordinary speed, with the highest priority given to the poor, the middle class, youth, women and farmers,” she said, speaking for over an hour in the presence of Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

The President also credited the government for lifting the economy out of a state of policy paralysis. “Despite global concerns like COVID-19, its aftermath and war-related uncertainties, the Indian economy has demonstrated remarkable stability and resilience, proving its strength,” she said.

A special reference in Murmu’s address was to controversial bills that the Opposition has been actively resisting.

“The government has made swift progress on critical issues such as One Nation, One Election (ONOE) and the Waqf Act (1995) Amendment,” she said a day after the joint parliamentary panel on Waqf Amendment Bill-2024 submitted its final report amid the Opposition’s dissent. The ONOE Bill is also with a parliamentary panel for review.

Overall thrust of the President’s address was on flagging the BJP’s governance model of “nation first”. “Bharat is a country of 140 crore people. We have diverse states, diverse regions, and diverse languages, yet as one nation, we have only one identity — Bharat. And we have only one resolution, one goal – ‘Viksit Bharat’!” she said in times of growing chasm between the ruling and Opposition sides.

In other important remarks, Murmu said the government had established peace through over 10 agreements in the northeast. The President also appreciated the people of Jammu and Kashmir for peaceful Assembly elections, attributing the conducive atmosphere to abrogation of Article 370. Flagship infrastructure projects of J&K and Ladakh — Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link; Chenab Bridge, Shinkun La tunnel, which will be the world’s highest, ensuring year-round connectivity between Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh — were part of her hour-long address alongside statistics on the gradual decline of left-wing extremism with affected districts down from 126 to 38.

Ahead of the Union Budget on Saturday, Murmu spoke at length about the middle class and farmers. “The economic progress of a nation like India is defined by the aspirations of the middle class and the fulfilment of those aspirations....It is my government that has, for the first time, openly acknowledged and appreciated the contributions of the middle class on every occasion,” said the President, flagging the decision to constitute the Eighth Pay Commission for government employees, 50 per cent assured pension to those under the Unified Pension Scheme, home loan subsidies as measures to benefit the middle class.

Noting progress on Gaganyaan, Murmu said, “Our goal is to establish India as a global innovation powerhouse.”

Bangladesh May Turn Into An Islamic Republic, Says Expert At IDC

February 1, 2025

--------------

A possible shift in Bangladesh’s constitutional identity—from a People’s Republic to an Islamic Republic—was highlighted by Prof David Taylor, interim Pro-Vice Chancellor, Asian University for Women, Chittagong, Bangladesh, during an expert talk organised by the Institute of Development and Communication (IDC) in collaboration with Post Graduate Government College (PGGC), Sector 11, Chandigarh. The event, attended by over 50 academics, policy experts, researchers, and students, focused on the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh and its implications for regional peace and security.

Prof. Taylor examined Bangladesh’s democratic decline and the increasing influence of radical Islamists. He noted that while the July 2024 student movement emerged from Bangla nationalism, it could evolve into a larger political movement promoting Bangladesh nationalism. He warned that this shift could have significant regional consequences.

Analysing Bangladesh’s shifting political landscape, Taylor discussed the role of the Awami League, economic policies, electoral challenges, and growing dissatisfaction with Sheikh Hasina’s government, which has been in power since 2008. He also highlighted concerns about the status of the Hindu minority, geopolitical realignments, and potential changes in Bangladesh-India diplomatic ties.

IDC chairman Dr. Pramod Kumar said the lecture provided a platform for critical discussions on identity politics and regional stability.

Prof. Deepak Kumar Singh of Panjab University, who chaired the session, underscored Sheikh Hasina’s democratic erosion over the past 15 years. He attributed the student protests to the reintroduction of the quota system for government jobs but said deeper issues like unemployment and economic slowdown fuelled public resentment. Singh stressed the role of civil society in shaping political narratives and questioned whether new leadership could break away from conservative frameworks to build a more inclusive democracy. Comparing the situation to Sri Lanka’s political transition, he saw potential for a new student-led political platform in Bangladesh.

Senior academicians including Prof. H.S. Shergill, Prof. B.S. Ghuman, Prof. Ronki Ram, and others attended the event. A key highlight was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IDC and PGGC-11 to strengthen research collaboration on security issues.

Banda Aceh. Two university students from Banda Aceh in Aceh Province were caught by residents engaging in a same-sex relationship in a rented room and are now undergoing trial at the Banda Aceh Sharia Court.

According to the court's website on Friday, the incident took place on Nov. 7, 2024, when one of the defendants, AI, picked up DA from a student dormitory in Kopelma Darussalam and brought him to AI's rented room in Syiah Kuala District. The two reportedly engaged in consensual sexual activity during this visit.

DA returned to his dorm before sunset prayers but later arranged to meet AI again that night at around 9 p.m. under the pretense of completing an assignment. During this second meeting, they once again engaged in consensual sexual activity.

Their actions were interrupted when a local resident, identified as YS, forced open the door to the room and found AI and DA undressed.

The two students were immediately handed over to the Sharia police, who conducted an investigation before bringing them to the Sharia Court.

Both defendants have been charged under Article 63(1) of Aceh's Qanun No. 6 of 2014 on the Jinayat Code, which criminalizes same-sex relationships. The Qanun is a set of local laws unique to Aceh Province, integrating Islamic sharia principles into governance and societal norms.

According to information from the Banda Aceh Sharia Court’s case tracking system, the trial will continue on Monday, with the prosecutors set to present their sentencing demands.

SC Rejects Plea For Urs Festival At Demolished Dargah, Gujarat Govt Denies Religious Discrimination

01.02.25

The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a plea seeking to celebrate the Urs festival from February 1 to 3 at a demolished Dargah in Gujarat’s Somnath Gir district after the state government told the court that even temples were razed as part of the anti-encroachment drive on the government land.

A bench of Justices B.R. Gavai and George Masih was dealing with an interlocutory application filed by Pir Haji Shah Mangroli Darah, which claimed that the festival had been held at the disputed site for several decades.

However, solicitor-general Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Gujarat government, opposed the plea and said no activities, including Hindu religious rituals, were allowed on the land that was encroached upon earlier.

Mehta denied allegations of religious discrimination during the demolition drive.

“Across religions whatever was unauthorised, we have removed. Out of the demolished structures, there are a significant number of properties belonging to the Hindu community,” Mehta told the bench.

After hearing the arguments, the bench said no interim relief for the conduct of Urs could be granted without hearing all sides on the main petition in the matter.

On October 25, a bench headed by Justice Gavai had recorded an undertaking from the Gujarat government that it would not allot to “any third party” certain disputed plots of land in Gir Somnath district where the government had demolished several alleged illegal properties, including mosques and dargahs.

The bench, which included Justice K.V. Viswanathan, had passed the order while dealing with a petition filed by the Auliya-e-Deen Committee which alleged that the authorities in Gujarat had wilfully razed mosques and dargahs on September 28 despite two apex court orders on September 17 and October 1 staying the demolition of illegal properties across the country.

The Gujarat government had told the court that there were documents to prove that the properties were under the control of the Somnath Trust.

Poll footage

The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Election Commission to continue preserving CCTV footage of polling during the pendency of a plea against the decision to increase the maximum number of voters per polling station from 1,200 to 1,500, which would allegedly cause a huge inconvenience and lead to serpentine queue and waste of time.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar passed the order after the EC counsel sought time to respond tothe PIL.

“The counsel appearing for Respondent No.1 (EC) prays for further time to file a counter affidavit in compliance with the order dated December 2, 2024. Let the same be filed within three weeks. Rejoinder if any to be filed within three weeks thereafter…Meanwhile, we deem it appropriate to direct Respondent No. 1 to maintain CCTV footage as they were doing earlier,” the bench said in an order.

Data on Rohingyas

The Supreme Court on Friday sought details about Rohingya settlements in Delhi from an NGO and the facilities accessible to them.

“File an affidavit explaining as to where exactly they are staying… whether in government camps or residential areas, in which pockets they are living,” a bench of Justices Surya Kant and N. Kotiswar Singh asked the Rohingya Human Rights Initiative after it complained that the refugees had been denied all basic facilities because of the lack of Aadhaar and other ID cards.

Ravinder Negi, the man whose feet PM Modi touched, had forced Muslim vendors to display their ’real’ names

By Sayantani

31 Jan 2025

Delhi Elections 2025: Ravinder Negi, BJP candidate for the Patparganj seat, garnered attention on Wednesday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen touching his feet during an election rally ahead of the Delhi Elections 2025. Negi, an East Delhi councillor, previously stirred controversy in October 2024 for urging Muslim shopkeepers to display their ‘real’ names outside their businesses.

In October, Ravinder Negi was seen in several viral videos approaching shopkeepers, particularly those selling dairy products, and directing them to display their real names.

The East Delhi BJP councillor was also heard telling a shopkeeper, “Navratri is coming and to support the sentiments of Hindu customers, people should clearly specify their Muslim names on shops.”

‘Tomar is a Hindu Surname’

In Chander Vihar, Delhi, Ravinder Singh Negi confronted the owner of ‘Tomar Dairy’, demanding to know his name and religion. When the shopkeeper, Altamash Tomar, identified himself as a Muslim, Negi questioned why the shop bore a surname typically associated with Hindus.

Ravinder Negi pressured the shopkeeper to change the name to one that clearly indicated his Muslim identity, threatening that failure to comply would result in the shop being forcibly shut down.

“Rawal Dairy”

In another incident, Ravinder Negi also confronted a dairy vendor, saying: “When your name is Mohammed Ayan, why have you placed a signboard that says Rawal Dairy? Why are you betraying people in a Hindu-dominated area? We have no fight against you. This is unfair. So better change the name immediately.”

The same video also shows the councillor approaching a street vendor, selling fritters, and scolding him for not moving his stall a little distance away from a Hindu-dominated area.

“We will confiscate the vending machine if you don't act. Don't come to me later and say that poor people are being harassed. There are Hindu people living here, and they have raised serious concerns,” he threatened.

In the videos, Ravinder Negi also visited butcher shops before Kanwar Yatra and Chhath Puja, asking them to keep the shops closed to respect the religious sentiments of Hindus.

Negi was seen checking the names of shopowners using payment apps and then threatening them to display the names that would ‘clarify’ their Muslim identity. Negi’s harassment of Muslim shopkeepers continued during Hindu religious festivals and periods, like the month of Sawan, Chhath Puja and Navratri.

AltNews reported an incident wherein Ravinder Negi was seen telling fish and meat shopkeepers to shut their shops during Navaratri. The BJP leader was heard threatening the vendors, saying, “I have to stay here for five years. If you obey me, you will be able to work peacefully.”

Who Is BJP Councillor Ravinder Negi?

Ravinder Singh Negi, 45, is contesting for the Patparganj seat on a BJP ticket and currently serves as a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) councillor representing Vinod Nagar.

Ravinder Negi narrowly lost to AAP's Manish Sisodia by just 2 per cent votes in 2020.

In the 2022 MCD elections, the BJP leader secured victory against the AAP candidate by a margin of 2,311 votes.

For Delhi Elections 2025, Negi is up against AAP's Avadh Ojha and Congress's Anil Kumar Chaudhary.

The Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled to take place on February 5, with the counting of votes set for February 8, 2025.

Court rejects bail plea of 15 Muslims in Sambhal Mosque violence case

February 1, 2025

A local court in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district has denied bail to 15 individuals accused of involvement in violent clashes that erupted during a survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid last November.

The violence resulted in the deaths of five Muslims and left over 25 police personnel injured, escalating tensions in the region.

Government lawyer Hariom Prakash Saini stated that Additional District Judge (II) Nirbhay Narayan Singh rejected the bail pleas on Friday, citing substantial evidence. “All the accused were identified in the CCTV footage, and their names were registered in the case by the complainant,” Saini said.

The court noted that despite the imposition of Section 144, which prohibits unlawful assembly, the accused were part of the crowd and refused to disperse. Instead, they allegedly attacked the police with stones and firearms.

The violence broke out on the second day of the court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid. The district administration’s inspection led to unrest among residents, which soon escalated into violent clashes. Protesters reportedly set government vehicles on fire and looted police equipment, including magazines and rubber bullets.

Among those denied bail are Aamir, Sameer, Yakub, Sajjaddin, Sajju, Mohammad Rehan, Naeem, Mohammad Gulfam, Mohammad Salim, Tehzeeb, Mohammad Ali, Shariq, Mohammad Firoz, and Mohammad Shadab. In a separate case registered at Nakhasa police station, the court also refused bail to two women, Rukaiya and Farhana.

The court’s decision has drawn mixed reactions from residents. Mohammad Asif, a shopkeeper in Sambhal, expressed his concerns, stating, “The violence was unfortunate, but the survey itself was seen as an attempt to target the Muslim community. People were angry, but the way the police responded only made things worse.”

Others, however, supported the court’s ruling. Ramesh Kumar, a local resident, said, “The law must take its course. No one has the right to attack the police or destroy public property, no matter the provocation.”

The incident has reignited debates on the handling of religious sites and the use of force by authorities. Human rights activists have called for an independent investigation, alleging excessive police action. Anjali Sharma, a local activist, emphasized, “The loss of life is tragic, and there needs to be accountability on all sides.”

As legal proceedings continue, the families of the accused await further developments. Fatima, the sister of one of the accused, shared her distress, saying, “We believe in the judiciary, but it’s hard to see our loved ones suffer. We just want justice and peace.”

With tensions still high, the people of Sambhal hope for a resolution that ensures both justice and communal harmony. — With Agencies Inputs

Mehbooba Mufti urges Nitish, Chandrababu to help stop amendments to Waqf Bill

 February 1, 2025

by Naveed Iqbal

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Friday said she has written to the leadership of NDA allies JD(U) and TDP, urging them to help stop the proposed Waqf (Amendment) Bill that is likely to be tabled in the Budget Session of Parliament.

This comes a day after National Conference’s Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi said he will meet and make a “final appeal” to JD(U) and TDP MPs regarding the concerns of the Muslim community over the proposed amendments.

In her letter to JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar and TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu, the former J&K chief minister said the “essence” of Mahatma Gandhi’s vision for India is being “altered, undermining the secular fabric that binds this nation together”. She urged the two leaders to intervene and prevent the Bill from being passed in Parliament.

“You have always been a staunch believer in our Constitution and have consistently championed the spirit of Ganga-Jamuni brotherhood. Today, as key members of the NDA, you are uniquely positioned to influence this matter and halt this onslaught,” she wrote.

She said the proposed Waqf (Amendment) Bill comes at a time when, for the past decade, “Muslims have been systematically disenfranchised, disempowered, and marginalised politically, socially, and economically”. She also highlighted the “utter disregard” for the misgivings raised by the Opposition parties in the form of dissent notes submitted to the joint committee on the Bill. “The exercise of consultation seems farcical without any genuine efforts to consult the community most affected by this unconstitutional, unconscionable, and authoritarian Bill.”

She said though the Bill has been “dressed as a reform”, its true objective is to “undermine the very foundation of the Waqf Act: to protect and preserve properties dedicated to the social and economic upliftment of Muslims for religious and charitable purposes”.

Mufti said that each proposed amendment to the Bill not only contradicts the interests of the Muslim community but also constitutes a direct assault on the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution. “This deeply divisive Bill is a clear manifestation of the majoritarianism that has fuelled bigotry and the marginalisation of Muslims since 2014. It strikes at the heart of the very idea of India, an India that thrives on its core values of diversity, pluralism, and peaceful coexistence.”

“I sincerely urge you to intervene and prevent this Bill from causing damage to our national unity and communal harmony,” she wrote.

520 Afghan migrants arrested in Iran’s Mazandaran province

ByFidel Rahmati

January 31, 2025

Following the arrest of Afghan migrants in Iran, 520 migrants from the Mazandaran province have been detained.

Abdullah Hassanzadeh, the police commander of Sari district in Mazandaran province, Iran, announced on Friday, January 31 that security forces have arrested 520 migrants without residence permits.

Iranian media reported that Hassanzadeh has urged Iranian citizens to avoid employing unauthorized foreign nationals in various jobs.

According to United Nations data, the forced deportation of Afghan nationals has dramatically increased since September, with thousands being detained and forcibly returned to their home country daily by Iranian police.

The head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office expressed concern over the forced deportations of Afghan citizens by the Iranian government, stating that the return of Afghan migrants should be “voluntary, safe, and dignified.”

This comes as a large portion of the migrant population in Iran consists of Afghan nationals.

The forced deportations of Afghan migrants from Iran are not only causing significant hardships for the individuals involved but also raise important concerns about the treatment of refugees and migrants in the region.

The international community must ensure that the rights of these individuals are upheld and that their return is carried out with dignity and in accordance with international law.

The growing number of Afghan migrants in Iran highlights the ongoing challenges faced by refugees, particularly in the context of political and economic instability. Addressing the underlying causes of migration and providing safer, more secure pathways for these individuals to return home voluntarily could help alleviate the situation and foster regional cooperation for the betterment of migrants’ lives.

UN: Afghan citizens are the second largest group of illegal refugees

ByFidel Rahmati

February 1, 2025

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported that Afghan citizens are the second largest group of refugees entering Greece illegally in 2024, after Syrians.

The agency stated on Friday, January 31, that a total of 54,417 individuals entered Greece via the sea in the last year. Of these, 35% were Syrians, 26% were Afghans, 12% Egyptians, 4% Palestinians, and 4% Eritreans.

The UNHCR has also noted a rise in the number of migrants, with a 27% increase in arrivals in 2024 compared to the previous year. According to their statistics, 16% of refugees were women, 28% were children, and 56% were men.

Greece is one of the main routes for migrants seeking entry into European countries, with thousands of refugees, especially from Afghanistan and Syria, risking their lives along the way. Many refugees have tragically lost their lives during the journey.

The UNHCR had previously reported that 25% of refugees arriving by sea to Greece were from Afghanistan. In total, 27,352 refugees arrived via the sea to Greece in 2024.

This alarming trend highlights the continuing challenges faced by both refugees and the countries they flee to. International support and action are crucial to addressing the growing migration crisis and providing necessary assistance to those affected.

Efforts to address the underlying causes of migration, such as conflict and insecurity, are essential to reducing the number of people forced to take dangerous journeys in search of safety.

First phase of Biswa Ijtema begins

Feb 1, 2025

The first phase of six-day Biswa Ijtema, one of the largest congregations of Muslims, commenced on the banks of the Turag in Tongi yesterday, with religious sermons after Fajr prayers.

Thousands of people joined Juma prayers yesterday as more devotees continued to arrive at the venue from home and abroad.

Habibullah Raihan, media coordinator of Zubair faction of Tabligh Jamaat, said the Ijtema formally began with "Aam Bayan" (general sermons) by India's Maulana Ibrahim Deola.

He added that 850 foreign devotees from 42 countries have reached there.

Followers of Maulana Zubair Ahmed are attending the first phase from yesterday to February 5, while those of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi will take part in the second phase from February 14 to 16.

The Akheri Munajat (concluding prayers) for Zubair's followers from 42 districts will take place on February 2, while those from other 22 districts will offer prayers on February 5. The followers of Saad will have their concluding prayers on February 16.

After Fajr prayers yesterday, Pakistan's Maulana Ziaul Haque delivered sermons, translated by Maulana Nurur Rahman. Around 10:00am, "Talim" (religious education) sessions were held in different areas, while Maulana Zubair conducted the Juma prayers.

Meanwhile, two devotees died on the first day of the congregation due to age-related complications.

The deceased were Chabet Ali, 70, of Sherpur, and Abdul Quddus Gazi, 60, of Khulna's Dumuria upazila. Their funeral prayers were held at the Ijtema ground after Juma prayers, saidHabibullah.

Another devotee, Mintu, 60, sustained burn injuries while cooking.

Security has been heightened in and around the venue.

Habib Iskandar, officer-in-charge of Tongi West Police Station, said police and Rab control rooms, watchtowers, and CCTV cameras have been installed for monitoring the venue. Plainclothes law enforcement personnel have also been deployed, while around 10,000 volunteers are assisting with security. Special security zones have also been set up for foreigners, he said.

Besides, free medical services are being provided at the Uttara Motors ground by Gazipur City Corporation, the Department of Health, Rab, Hamdard Laboratories, Islamic Mission, Islamic Foundation, Homeopathic Welfare Foundation, Uttara Modern Medical College Hospital, Square Pharmaceuticals, Red Crescent Society, and around 20 other organisations.

Biswa Ijtema event in Bangladesh, thousands of Muslims attend

January 31, 2025

TONGI, Bangladesh — Tens of thousands of people gathered on a riverbank near Bangladesh’s capital on Friday to listen to sermons by Islamic scholars at the Biswa Ijtema, or global congregation of Muslim devotees.

The three-day annual event will end Sunday when hundreds of thousands of Muslims are expected to join final prayers like every year. This is the first phase of Biswa Ijtema, while the second phase will be held Feb. 3-5. The third phase will be held Feb. 14-16.

Biswa Ijtema is one of the largest gatherings of Muslim devotees, held on the sandy banks of the Turag River in Tongi, just north of Dhaka, the capital. The event dates back to the 1950s when the Tablighi Jamaat movement started hosting the event.

On Friday, Muslims joined the weekly afternoon prayers as many more continued to stream toward the venue from across Bangladesh.

About 2,150 foreign Muslims from 72 countries were among the tens of thousands of Bangladeshis who joined the first phase of the congregation, said Habibullah Raihan, a spokesman of the organizing committee.

He said that scholars and clerics from India, Pakistan and other countries delivered their sermons on the tenants of Islam as the devotees slept in tents erected on the riverbank.

Security checkpoints and camaras have been installed, while plainclothes security officials joined uniformed officers in the area.

A.K.M. Shahidur Rahman, director-general of the elite Rapid Action Battalion force, said Friday that there was no particular security threat, but that adequate measures were in place to ensure safety.

Mohammed Nadim, a grocer from the northern district of Rangpur, traveled overnight with many others from his area to join the weekly prayers on Friday.

“I come here every year to seek blessings. It gives me peace,” he told The Associated Press at the scene.

“Many people came here like me. We raise our hands together. We want peace in my life, we want peace in the world. May Allah accept us, may Allah forgive us,” he said.

Be cautious when commenting on religion - Mohd Na’im

BERNAMA

01-02- 2025

PUTRAJAYA: All parties, including leaders, must be cautious when making statements about religion to avoid touching on sensitivities, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar.

He said mutual respect should be upheld in Malaysia’s multiracial and multi-religious society.

“Religious sensitivities must always be emphasised because we do not want statements that could lead to misunderstandings.

“My advice is to always be mindful of the statements we make,“ he told reporters after attending the Zikir Akbar MADANI programme here yesterday.

He was commenting on a reminder issued by UMNO’s Ulama Council to ministers, particularly non-Muslims, urging them to be more cautious when commenting on matters related to Islam and the Muslim community.

Earlier, Mohd Na’im and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa attended the Zikir Akbar MADANI programme, held in conjunction with the 2025 Federal Territories Day, which will be celebrated today.

This year’s celebration is particularly meaningful as it coincides with the arrival of Syaaban, a significant month in Islam that holds deep spiritual meaning and serves as a time to prepare for Ramadan.

The programme tonight included Solat Hajat, recitations of Surah Yasin, prayers for Malaysia’s well-being, and a special Tausiyah focusing on unity and well-being.

Selangor to begin Quran-based STEM education this year, says MB

01 Feb 2025

SHAH ALAM, Feb 1 — The Selangor government will begin incorporating a Quran-based science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) curriculum in religious schools managed by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) this year.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the initiative would kick off with training for teachers and an evaluation of suitable modules to ensure the success of this Quran-centric knowledge empowerment agenda.

“We aim to start with 23 religious secondary schools under JAIS this year. We will begin by training the teachers and assessing the impact and effectiveness of the approach.

“If we observe positive outcomes, we will enhance the programme and recommend that religious teachers integrate STEM elements into their teachings to further improve STEM education for students.”

He told reporters this after officiating the Restu International Quran Art Festival 2025 closing ceremony and launching the Quran-based STEM programme here today.

Amirudin said further discussions would be held with the Education Ministry to integrate the Quran-based STEM syllabus into the teaching curriculum of the schools, ultimately improving existing programmes under the state government’s management.

“In Selangor, we also have five Maahad Integrasi Tahfiz Sains dan Teknologi Selangor (MITS). This initiative is in line with our previous announcement to cultivate Hafiz al-Quran who are also skilled in STEM fields,” he said.

Today’s event also saw the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Yayasan Restu and Al-Kauthar Eduqids for the 1 Million Quran Endowment Project, aimed at distributing the Quran worldwide, especially to areas in need such as minority Muslim communities, tahfiz centres and Islamic educational institutions. — Bernama

MACC intensifies efforts to uncover other vape smuggling syndicates

01 Feb 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 1 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is actively conducting intelligence operations to detect whether there are other electronic cigarette (vape) smuggling syndicates.

MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya did not rule out the possibility of syndicates operating at other entry points and said that investigations are ongoing following the recent success of the commission in dismantling a vape smuggling syndicate at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Cargo Hub through Ops Airways.

“At the moment, there are no new arrests. However, some Customs officers are currently on MACC’s radar.

“The intelligence division is conducting further investigations to identify all suspects involved,” he told Bernama today.

Recently, MACC busted a vape smuggling syndicate at KLIA Cargo Hub after arresting 14 individuals, including six Customs officers, suspected of colluding in the illegal operation.

The syndicate was uncovered through Ops Airways, which led to the arrest of all the male suspects, aged between 20 and 60, in raids around KLIA and Putrajaya. The smuggling operation resulted in an estimated tax revenue loss of RM8 million to the country. — Bernama

Police detain one Indonesian suspect in MMEA shooting case, second man still at large

By Malay Mail

01 Feb 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 1 — One of two Indonesian men sought by police over a shooting incident off the coast of Tanjung Rhu, Banting, on January 24 was arrested in Teluk Panglima Garang, Banting, last night.

Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed to Harian Metro that the 35-year-old suspect was detained around 10:30pm.

“The suspect entered Malaysia as a tourist, and we detained him to assist with the investigation.

“The investigation paper is almost complete and may be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor as early as next week,” Hussein said.

It is understood the suspect will be remanded at the Banting Magistrate’s Court today.

Authorities are still pursuing a second Indonesian man believed to be involved in the incident, as well as others potentially connected, based on witness statements and the size of the boat involved.

Hussein also provided an update on the ongoing investigation, saying that 14 witnesses from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) have been questioned, with some likely to be called again for further questioning.

“Officers involved in the operation, including those who discharged their firearms will also be called in,” he added

Last week, the police classified the shooting incident in the waters off Pantai Morib as attempted murder.

In the early hours of January 24, an MMEA patrol boat was rammed four times by another vessel, believed to be linked to the suspects.

During the altercation, two suspects, thought to be foreigners, allegedly attempted to attack MMEA officers with machetes.

Later that morning, around 9am, MMEA received a tip-off about a boat adrift near Pantai Banting in Kuala Langat.

Upon reaching the vessel, they found two men aboard. One was declared dead at the scene, while the other, critically injured, was transported to Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang.

In a related incident, three men, believed to be Indonesian, were sent to Hospital Sultan Idris Shah in Serdang with gunshot wounds.

The trio was reportedly brought to the hospital’s emergency unit by a Toyota Vios around 7:30am on January 24.

The police have urged anyone with additional information to come forward as the investigation continues.

Stronger forest protection as amended National Forestry Act takes effect today in Federal Territories

01 Feb 2025

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 1 — The National Forestry (Amendment) Act 2022 (Act A1667) comes into effect today in the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the amendments to the National Forestry Act 1984 is aimed at enhancing and strengthening the management of permanent reserved forests (HSK) as well as forest enforcement.

He said Act A1667 had 62 provisions involving amendments and improvements, covering the process of excising and replacing HSK by introducing the requirement for public inquiries, as well as the appointment of federal forestry officers to inspect and investigate individuals suspected of committing forestry offences.

“The amendments also include increased fines and penalties for forestry offences, with maximum fines ranging from RM20,000 to RM5 million, prison sentences of seven to 20 years, and measures to address ambiguities and unclear authorities,” he said in a statement.

The enforcement of Act A1667 in the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan is being implemented concurrently with the enforcement of the National Forestry (Federal Territories) (Amendment) Rules 2025 [P.U.(A) 50/2025], which provides for the conduct of public inquiries before any HSK area is excised.

"The enforcement of P.U.(A) 50/2025 makes the Federal Territories (JPWP) the second state to have legislation and procedures for conducting public inquiries before excising HSK areas, after Selangor.

"These rules can serve as a reference for other states currently drafting their own subsidiary legislation to enforce Act A1667," he said.

Nik Nazmi noted that the total HSK area in the Federal Territories currently stood at 152.97 hectares, comprising 84.689 hectares in Kuala Lumpur and 68.281 hectares in Labuan.

He added that the Federal Forestry Department (JPWP) is working to expand the HSK area by gazetting Bukit Dinding in Ulu Kelang, covering 20.05 hectares.

"Through this gazettement, the area will be protected and preserved as a green space, serving as a green lung for the surrounding areas," he said. — Bernama

Syria writers urge new leaders to respect public freedoms

January 31, 2025

DAMASCUS: Dozens of Syrian writers, artists, and academics signed a petition posted online on Friday calling for the respect of public freedoms after the overthrow of Bashar Assad in December.

The publication of the petition came two days after the leader of the militant offensive that toppled Assad, Ahmad Al-Sharaa, was named interim president.

“We call for the restoration of fundamental public freedoms, foremost among them the freedoms of assembly, protest, expression and belief,” the petition said.

“The state must neither impose nor interfere in people’s customs regarding food, drink, clothing, or other aspects of daily life,” it added, alluding to fears that the new authorities might impose religious law.

Al-Sharaa promised on Thursday to hold a “national dialogue conference” to help shape a “constitutional declaration” that will serve as a “legal reference” during the country’s transition.

The signatories called for “the election of a constituent assembly under a fair electoral law and adopting a new constitution that guarantees freedom and dignity for all citizens, men and women alike.”

Among the signatories were award-winning filmmaker Waad Al-Kateab and Mustafa Khalifa, author of “The Shell,” an autobiographical account of an activist imprisoned for years.

Since Assad’s overthrow, deadly fighting has continued in northern Syria between militants and forces loyal to a Kurdish-led administration in the northeast.

The petition called for a “just resolution to the Kurdish question” that “must uphold the legitimate cultural, linguistic, and political rights of our Kurdish citizens within a mutually agreed framework of administrative decentralization.”

Syria’s new rulers have called on the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces to hand over their weapons, rejecting demands for any self-rule.

During more than half a century of rule by the Assad family, public displays of dissent were savagely repressed.

After Bashar Assad succeeded his father, Hafez, in June 2000, there was a period of greater openness, but it was short-lived.

Al-Sharaa, in his speech on Thursday, said he would form a small legislative body to fill the parliamentary void until new elections were held after the Syrian parliament was dissolved on Wednesday.

He said he would also, in the coming days, announce the formation of a committee that would prepare to hold a national dialogue conference that would be a platform for Syrians to discuss the future political program of the nation.

That would be followed by a “constitutional declaration,” he said, in an apparent reference to drafting a new Syrian constitution.

Al-Sharaa has previously said that drafting a new constitution and holding elections may take up to four years.

Iran commemorates 46th anniversary of Islamic Revolution

ByIFP Editorial Staff

January 31, 2025

The event marked the beginning of the Ten-Day Dawn celebrations, commemorating the Revolution’s victory in 1979.

Celebrating the day, motorcycle parades were held in the capital Tehran and other cities across the country.

The ceremonies also featured various cultural and social programs nationwide, including youth festivals, sports competitions, and tributes to historical figures.

Events such as the national youth celebration in Tabriz, the commemoration of the Urumia uprising, and the symbolic raising of the Iranian flag in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province were held to honor the Revolution’s legacy.

An international cinematic event, 43rd Fajr Film Festival, also kicked off on Thursday in Tehran, marking the Islamic Revoltion.

Hamid Reza Hajibabaei, Deputy Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, addressed the gathering at Behesht-e Zahra, emphasizing Iran’s resilience and its role in “promoting justice and resistance globally.”

He criticized the US for its history of aggression, citing the 1988 downing of an Iranian passenger plane, the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani in 2020, and the imposition of an eight-year war on Iran in the 1980s.

Hajibabaei asserted that Iran has never sought conflict but has consistently defended its sovereignty against external pressures.

The Islamic Revolution, led by Imam Khomeini, was fueled by anti-imperialist sentiments due to former Iranian monarch Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s reliance on Western powers, particularly the US.

The revolution ended 2,500 years of monarchical rule in Iran, establishing a republic grounded in Islamic values.

UNRWA’s work continues despite ban

February 01, 2025

GENEVA: The UN Palestinian relief agency said its humanitarian work across the occupied territories and Gaza was still ongoing on Friday despite an Israeli ban that took effect a day before and what it described as hostility toward its staff.

An Israeli law adopted in October bans operations by UNRWA, or UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, on Israeli land — including annexed East Jerusalem — and contact with Israeli authorities from Jan. 30.

Britain, France, and Germany on Friday reiterated their concern over Israel implementing the new law, which humanitarian agencies say will have a considerable impact on devastated Gaza as staff and supplies transit to the Palestinian enclave via Israel.

“We continue to provide services,” Juliette Touma, director of communications of UNRWA, told a press briefing in Geneva.

“In Gaza, UNRWA continues to be the backbone of the international humanitarian response. We continue to have international personnel in Gaza and bring in trucks of basic supplies.”

She said any disruptions to its work in Gaza would put a ceasefire deal that halted the war between Israel and Hamas at risk.

“If UNRWA is not allowed to continue to bring and distribute supplies, then the fate of this very fragile ceasefire is going to be at risk and is going to be in jeopardy,” she said.

Tens of thousands of Palestinian refugees in occupied East Jerusalem — whose annexation by Israel is not recognized internationally — also receive education, healthcare, and other services from UNRWA.

Touma said that its Palestinian staff in the West Bank and East Jerusalem are facing difficulties, citing examples of stone-throwing and hold-ups at checkpoints without attributing blame.

“They face an exceptionally hostile environment as a fierce disinformation campaign against UNRWA continues,” she said.

“It has been a really rough ride; it has not been easy. Our staff have not been protected.”

International staff have already left after their visas expired, she added.

Israel has long been critical of UNRWA and alleges its staff were involved in the deadly Oct. 7, 2023, attacks on Israel, which triggered the Gaza war.

The UN has said nine UNRWA staff may have been involved and were fired.

The ceasefire deal has allowed for a surge in humanitarian aid and enabled the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.

Before the agreement, experts warned of imminent famine in northern Gaza.

Supplies have since risen and the World Food Programme said that more than 32,000 tonnes of food had entered Gaza since the Jan. 19 deal took effect.

At the same briefing, the World Health Organization’s Dr. Rik Peeperkorn said about 12,000-14,000 patients were waiting to be evacuated from Gaza across the Rafah crossing.

Fifty are set to be moved on Saturday amid warnings that some children could die.

He added that these would be the first medical evacuations via Rafah since it was shut in May last year.

“They (evacuations) must urgently resume, and a medical corridor must open up,” he said.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said Israel was committed to facilitating humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, saying assistance should go through other international agencies and NGOs.

“Humanitarian aid doesn’t equal UNRWA, and those who wish to support the humanitarian aid effort in the Gaza Strip should invest their resources in organizations that are alternative to UNRWA,” he said in a statement.

“We will abide by the law, and we will continue to facilitate humanitarian aid.”

Ceasefire in Gaza Allows Reopening of Rafah Border with Egypt

2025-02-01

KABUL(BNA): The Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza is set to reopen today after being closed for 15 months due to the ongoing conflict.

This reopening coincides with the exchange of three Israeli prisoners for 90 Palestinian detainees, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing ceasefire agreement.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed that, as part of the ceasefire terms, a group of injured and sick Palestinians will be transferred abroad for medical treatment. Initially, the movement through the Rafah crossing will be restricted, with plans for a full reopening at the conclusion of the phased ceasefire agreement.

During the first phase, in addition to the transfer of wounded Palestinians, 100 students and some dual nationals will be permitted to exit Gaza.

The first phase includes not only the prisoner exchange but also a commitment from Israeli forces to withdraw from densely populated areas in Gaza, allowing displaced individuals to return home. Additionally, an agreement has been reached to facilitate the entry of 600 humanitarian aid trucks into the Gaza Strip daily.

The second phase of the ceasefire is anticipated to establish lasting peace, continue the prisoner exchanges, and ensure the complete withdrawal of Israeli military forces from the territory. This phase aims to halt the conflict permanently.

The third phase, expected to unfold over 42 days, will include the exchange of deceased individuals, the initiation of a comprehensive reconstruction plan for Gaza, and the permanent opening of all crossings to facilitate the free movement of people and goods.

The reconstruction effort will receive financial backing from Egypt, Qatar, and the United Nations, focusing on rebuilding homes, public facilities, and infrastructure while providing compensation to those affected by the conflict.

Rats, dogs and torn clothes amid the ruins of Gaza homes

January 31, 2025

JABALIA, Gaza: The rats and dogs scavenging amid the ruins of her neighborhood in northern Gaza make Manal Al-Harsh’s return to her wrecked home even more miserable.

Despite the respite from Israeli bombardments that a ceasefire has brought, she still fears for her family’s security. They have trouble sleeping at night.

Even trying to find her children’s clothes amid the rubble of their house in Jabalia is a forlorn task.

Al-Harsh, 36, has erected a makeshift tent from salvaged blankets to provide shelter for her and her children.

“We are staying here, but we are afraid of rats and everything around us. There are dogs. There is no place to settle. We have children. It is difficult,” Harsh, 36, said as she stepped cautiously over the debris.

She said she had returned from the south of the Palestinian enclave when the ceasefire took effect but found her house destroyed.

Much of the rest of Gaza City also lies in ruins after 15 months of fighting and waves of Israeli airstrikes and artillery barrages that left it a shell of the bustling urban center it was before the war.

“We are practically sleeping here, but we don’t sleep. We are afraid someone might come upon us. We are sleeping and scared,” she said.

“I want to retrieve some clothes for the children to wear. We came with nothing. Life here is expensive, and there is no money to buy anything.”

Many of those returning, often laden with what personal possessions they still have after months of being moved around as the battlegrounds shifted, had trekked 20 km (12 miles) or more along the coastal highway north.

Like many displaced Palestinians, Al-Harsh faces uncertainty as she tries to salvage what remains. She had managed to pick some clothes from the rubble but they were in a sorry state.

“It’s all torn. Nothing is good. As much as we do, as much as we retrieve, it is all stones,” she said.

“Death is better,” Al-Harsh said, her voice heavy with despair.

Punjab police successfully thwarted an armed assault on a checkpoint in Dera Ghazi Khan late on Friday night, driving away the militants after a strong defensive response.

A police spokesperson on Saturday said that 15 to 20 terrorists launched a coordinated assault on the Jhangi checkpost, located within the jurisdiction of Vahowa police station, under the cover of darkness.

The attackers used rocket launchers, hand grenades, and advanced weaponry in the strike.

However, police forces swiftly retaliated, thwarting the attack and compelling the terrorists to escape.

A search operation has been launched in the area to track down the fleeing militants.

RPO Dera Ghazi Khan, Captain (retd) Sajjad Hassan Khan Manj, led the police operation, accompanied by DPO Dera Ghazi Khan Syed Ali.

The country has been reeling under increased terrorism for more than a year despite efforts by the government and security agencies to suppress it.

The year 2024 turned out to be the deadliest for Pakistan's civil and military security forces in a decade with at least 685 fatalities and 444 terror attacks, according to "CRSS Annual Security Report 2024" issued by Centre for Security and Strategic Studies.

Equally alarming were the cumulative losses of civilians and security personnel, i.e., 1,612 fatalities, accounting for over 63% of the total recorded this year, marking 73% more losses compared to 934 outlaws eliminated, The News reported citing CRSS report.

The overall fatalities recorded the previous year were a record 9-year high and over 66% more than in 2023. On average, nearly seven people lost their lives daily, with November emerging as the deadliest month across all metrics, compared to all other months of the year.

The violence took the heaviest toll on KP which topped in human losses with 1,616 fatalities, followed by Balochistan with 782 fatalities. In 2024, the country suffered 2,546 violence-linked fatalities and 2,267 injuries among civilians, security personnel and outlaws.

This tally of casualties stemmed from 1,166 incidents of terror attacks and counter-terror operations, marking a grim year for the country's security landscape.

State Bank Of PakistanAdopts AAOIFI Sharia Standard

By Our Correspondent

February 01, 2025

KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) announced on Friday the adoption of the Sharia standard issued by the Accounting and Auditing Organisation for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) to standardise Shariah practices within the Islamic banking industry.

“With a view to further strengthen the Sharia compliance framework and harmonise Sharia practices in the Islamic banking industry, AAOIFI Shariah Standard No 47 (Rules for Calculating Profit in Financial Transactions) has been adopted with immediate effect, subject to clarifications/amendments,” the SBP said in a circular.

The Islamic banking sector experienced significant growth in terms of assets and deposits in FY24. During the year, the SBP adopted 12 additional Sharia standards to strengthen the compliance framework and harmonise Sharia practices in the domestic Islamic banking sector. The SBP is collaborating with the industry and has established a steering committee to provide strategic guidance for converting conventional banks into Islamic banks in line with the 26th Constitutional Amendment bill, which aims to eliminate all forms of ‘riba’ (interest) by January 2028.

System can’t move forward without PTI: Salman Akram

January 31, 2025

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Salman Akram Raja on Friday claimed the “system” would realise soon it could not move forward without the Imran Khan-founded party.

His remarks came a day after the PTI rejected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s offer to resume the stalled talks with the ruling coalition, a move that triggered speculation regarding political instability in the days to come.

PTI is apparently shifting to “agitation mode”, as PTI Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter President Junaid Akbar, earlier this week, said that the party had multiple options, including staging protests at the district level against alleged rigging during last year's general elections and a demonstration at Islamabad’s D-Chowk.

He was of the view that the opposition party's desire to hold dialogue with the government was misconstrued as its weakness. Akbar had elaborated that PTI’s “homoeopathic leadership” would be sidelined after reorganisation and “hardliners” would be appointed to key positions.

Speaking on a local TV show today, the PTI leader said his party was ready to move forward according to the Constitution and law.

“We realise that we are Pakistan’s largest political party. We want to bring stability to the country and we believe the presence of PTI is providing stability to the country.”

“If you shrink the PTI, that is not possible, then extremist elements will be strengthened. We believe that the system will soon realise that moving forward is not possible without us,” he added.

Responding to a question, he said neither the party was holding backdoor talks nor such contacts were needed.

Meanwhile, During Geo News programme "Naya Pakistan", PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui, who is also a spokesperson for the government negotiation team, said that the PTI had already made the decision about quitting the dialogue process on January 23, adding that the former ruling party did not wait for even their own deadline.

Contrary to the government, the former ruling party did not show flexibility in their demands, alleged Siddiqui.

Taking a dig at the former ruling party, the PML-N senator said: “They entered the dialogue process mistakenly as it is not their area of expertise.”

“Their area of ??specialisation is blocking roads, carrying out attacks, staging sit-ins, and bringing petrol bombs,” he added.

Referring to the expected protests by the former ruling party, the PML-N senator said: “The state will protect its citizens if they [PTI] attack.”

Moving on to the controversial amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, the senator admitted that the government passed the legislation in “haste”.

However, he added: “The PECA issue is not something that cannot be fixed.”

‘Prosecutor, judge & jury’: fairness of May 9 trials disputed in SC

Nasir Iqbal

February 1, 2025

• As affected party, army cannot conduct fair proceedings, argues ex-CJP’s lawyer

• Judge asks how troops will receive justice if PAA sections are deemed unconstitutional

• Acquitting 100 offenders preferable to sentencing one innocent, Justice Mandokhail observes

ISLAMABAD: The counsel for the complainant opposed the military trials of the individuals involved in the May 9 riots on Friday, saying that in a court-martial, the army acts as prosecutor, judge and jury.

But in the instant case, the army was also the affected party, which rendered such proceedings “unfair and unconstitutional”.

Khwaja Ahmad Hosain made these remarks as the seven-judge Constitutional Bench took up a set of intra-court appeals (ICAs) against the Oct 23, 2023 five-judge order nullifying the military trials of civilians involved in the May 9 violence.

During the hearing, Mr Hosain representing former CJP Jawwad S. Khawaja, submitted that Article 10-A of the Constitution contained an absolute and undiluted fundamental right to due process and a fair trial. This right is not qualified with reference to any reasonable restrictions as is the case with other rights. Therefore, the court martial of civilians violates this right and is unconstitutional, he added.

Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi, meanwhile, questioned how military personnel, who sacrifice their lives daily at the hands of civilian terrorists, would receive justice if the contested Sections 2(1)(d)(i) and (ii) of the Pakistan Army Act (PAA) 1952 were deemed unconstitutional.

“Recently, five army personnel lost their lives, while another 13 embraced martyrdom in a different terrorist attack involving civilians,” Justice Rizvi remarked and then went on to question how terrorism cases could be effectively prosecuted in Anti-Terrorism Courts (ATCs), given the challenge of securing witnesses.

Senior counsel Khwaja Ahmad Hosain responded that former CJP Ajmal Mian in the 1999 Sheikh Liaquat Hussain judgement had held that the best response to terrorists was to convict them in civilian courts as questions could not be raised about the credibility of such convictions.

Justice Rizvi, however, reminded that the Sheikh Liaquat Hussain case concerned the incidents of terrorism relating to Karachi but the entire country was witnessing a wave of terrorism and at least two or more provinces were in the grip of this menace. Though the country was not facing any movement like ‘Mukti Bahini’ today, the entire nation was under siege by civilian terrorists, regretted Justice Rizvi.

Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail observed that acquitting 100 offenders was preferable to sentencing a single innocent, as punishing the innocent was a grave injustice and a sin.

Justice Mandokhail also shared his experience when six Balochistan High Court judges were saved simply because an explosive device planted on their path went off five minutes earlier. Had the perpetrators been successful, six judges would have lost their lives, Justice Mandokhail observed, adding Pakistan stands at 130 globally in the ranking for rule of law and justice, since courts had to acquit the accused due to the absence of witnesses.

However, Justice Mandokhail questioned whether the country had truly benefited from the implementation of the 21st Amendment, which was introduced to try terrorists in military courts and later extended for another two years.

Right to fair trial

The counsel, however, reiterated the right to a fair trial while referring to the May 15 press release by the ISPR, in which the corps commanders had determined that they had “irrefutable evidence” regarding the May 9 incidents of a coordinated attack on the army installations.

In the presence of this finding, it would be challenging for junior officers under their command to acquit any accused in the court martial process, the counsel feared. He appreciated the contribution of the Shuhuda and agreed their families deserved justice. But at the same time, the counsel cautioned that the accused and their families deserved justice and a fair trial.

When asked about the status of Indian Spy Kulbhushan Jadhav after the Oct 23, 2023 judgement of striking down the law, the counsel responded that his status remains unchanged as the ruling did not impact any concluded or pending court martial where a remedy of review and reconsideration had been provided. The counsel then focused on the provisions of the PAA and the Army Rules and submitted that there was no right to counsel in a Field General Court Martial.

Although the army authorities may allow a counsel, this was at their discretion, adding that it would be a remarkable finding if the Supreme Court in this case endorsed as fair a process where there was no legal right to a lawyer.

WB’s support sought in obtaining carbon credits for capital

Kashif Abbasi

February 1, 2025

ISLAMABAD: City managers have sought World Bank (WB)’s technical support in obtaining carbon credits for environmental initiatives as the two sides discussed the issues of air quality and smog in Islamabad.

Carbon credits are generated from projects that physically remove carbon emissions from atmosphere.

This includes initiatives such as reforestation, afforestation and massive plantation or other projects like electric buses.

CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa held a meeting with WB’s Senior Disaster Risk Management Programme Specialist Lesley Y. Cordero and her team here on Friday.

During the meeting, the CDA chief also requested for the WB’s support in establishing a carbon credit cell in the civic agency.

According to a press release, Ms Cordero assured the CDA of the bank’s full cooperation in improving Islamabad’s air quality and addressing smog-related issues.

She also expressed her willingness to assist the CDA in preparing short-term, medium-term and long-term plans to enhance the city’s environment.

The primary focus of the discussion was to address the issue of smog and take steps to improve the air quality and environment in Islamabad.

“CDA chief emphasised the need for issuing a reliable Air Quality Index (AQI) to guide the citizens of Islamabad. Various measures and proposals were also discussed to improve the AQI and mitigate the adverse effects of air pollution.”

The chairman stressed the importance of taking practical steps to tackle the causes of smog before the start of the smog season. The meeting also highlighted the urgency of controlling smoke-emitting vehicles with a decision to ensure that all vehicles in Islamabad possessed fitness certificates.

“He underscored the adoption of a zero-tolerance policy against vehicles contributing to smog. He also highlighted that electric buses have been introduced in Islamabad to provide eco-friendly transportation for the city’s residents. This initiative is seen as a significant step toward improving the city’s environment.”

The press release said the CDA chief called for strengthening the partnership with the World Bank to combat air pollution and said a comprehensive tree plantation campaign this year aims to curb air pollution effectively.

Mr Randhawa reiterated the commitment to leveraging the World Bank’s technical expertise and experience to tackle environmental challenges and ensure a healthier environment for the citizens of Islamabad.

The poor air quality and smog have become major issues in various cities of Punjab particularly from November to February. In this ongoing season, Lahore hit international headlines due to poor visibility and extreme smog.

Comparatively, Islamabad is better than other cities, but still it also faces problem of poor air quality, particularly in November and December.

In December 2024, smog and air pollution increased in Islamabad and the month remained the most polluted in terms of particulate matter (2.5 microns). The air quality index also spiked to 205 in the same month, making air quality unhealthy.

On the other hand, Islamabad has been facing fast growth in its population with planned and unplanned development, smoke emitting industries, shrinking green spaces and increase in the number of vehicles.

Instead of creating more green areas to improve environment of the city, the federal cabinet recently converting buffer zone green areas/of four H-series sectors into residential sectors.

PPP ignores opposition protest as Sindh Assembly passes varsity law tweaks

Tahir Siddiqui

February 1, 2025

• Controversial bill allows non-PhD bureaucrats to become vice chancellors in Sindh

• Muttahida, PTI and Jamaat lawmakers tear copies of the amended law

• Another bill passed to end pecuniary limit on district courts in civil suits

KARACHI: Amid strong protest by all three opposition parties, the Pakistan Peoples Party, based on its numeric majority in the Sindh Assembly, on Friday got passed the Sindh Universities and Institutes Laws (Amendment) Bill enabling current bureaucrats to become vice chancellors of universities across the province.

The situation in a thinly attended house became tense when members of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan, Jamaat-i-Islami and Tehreek-i-Insaaf-backed Sunni Ittehad Council gathered in front of the Speaker’s desk, chanting slogans against the controversial legislation.

As Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar began clause by clause approval of the bill, the opposition members tore up the copies of the amended law.

Under the amendment law, any bureaucrat holding degree of master’s can be appointed vice chancellor in any university.

As per the new law, a cadre officer of BPS-21 or above, having bachelor’s degree in engineering and master’s degree in any discipline from the Higher Education Commission-recognised university or institute can be appointed VC in any university of Sindh.

However, after being appointed as vice chancellor, he will have to leave the civil service.

Besides, an eminent academician and who is qualified to be a full professor, having PhD from recognised HEC University/Institute in relevant field having registered with the Pakistan Engineering Council or the candidates having PhD in relevant field and having 15 years’ experience in academic, research or management leadership position and possess distinguished research and publication record can also be appointed VC under the new law.

The candidate for the VC post shall not be more than 62 years of age on the last date of applying for the post.

The appointment of the vice chancellor will be from among the three names recommended by the search committee.

Similarly, the house smoothly passed with majority votes the Sindh Civil Courts (Amendment Bill) into law.

As per the amended law, the original jurisdiction of the district court in civil suits and proceeding shall be without pecuniary limit.

Under the law, all suits and proceedings pending disposal in the Sindh High Court in original jurisdiction shall stand transferred to the courts of the concerned district judge.

The law and parliamentary affairs minister said that the amended law would reduce the case burden on the high court.

Earlier, when Deputy Speaker Anthony Naveed allowed the opposition leader to speak, he asked the government as to what was the compulsion to approve these laws in such a hurry. “If the government wants to suppress our voice, then it must stop talking about democracy,”

As for the Sindh Courts (Amendment) Bill, he said that it was presented in the house for approval without sending it to the standing committee and without any consultation from the opposition parties. “The Peoples Party is making legislation arbitrarily on the basis of majority,” he deplored.

The law minister said that the provincial government wanted ordinary citizens to get quick and cheap justice through this law. “This is not being done to benefit any particular person or any approved opinion,” he added.

Call attention notices

In reply to a call attention notice given by MQM-P lawmaker Najam Mirza, the law and parliamentary affairs minister said that the water supply to Karachi would not be affected due to the lining of KB Feeder that supplied water to the Keenjhar Lake.

The MQM-P member had pointed out that the lining work of the KB Feeder Canal coming out of Kotri Barrage could not be completed on the given time and there was an apprehension of water crisis in the city.

Mr Lanjar told the house that the timeframe for the lining project was from Dec 25, 2024 to Jan 10.

He said that there was sufficient water in the Keenjhar Lake for three-month supply to the city before the water supply to the lake from KB feeder was suspended.

The minister said that lining would be completed shortly.

The house was later adjourned to Monday at 10am.

Shaan Farooq, From Birmingham, Jailed For Islamic State Terrorist MaterialTo Encourage Terrorism

31st January

By Olivia Warburton

A 19-YEAR-OLD man has been jailed for possessing and distributing terrorism material.

Shaan Farooq from Saltley, Birmingham was found guilty last month at Birmingham Crown Court for three counts of intentionally distributing terrorism material.

Farooq had previously pleaded guilty to possessing terrorism material from May to July 2022, West Midlands Police said.

When detectives searched his home in July 2022, they found a phone, laptop, tablet and iPad containing extremist material and images which supported the banned organisation Islamic State which Farooq intended to distribute to encourage terrorism.

Today (January 31) he was handed three four year sentences for intentionally distributing terrorism material and an 18 month sentence for possessing terrorism material.

The latter sentence will run consecutively meaning Farooq will serve a total of five years and six months in prison, West Midlands Police said.

Following the discovery of the material, Farooq was arrested in August 2022 at the same time as his friend Amir El-Harith, from Smethwick.

Amir El-Harith, aged 20, was jailed in July last year for a total of six and a half years for terrorism offences including posting videos to encourage others to commit, prepare or instigate acts of terrorism with the material relating to Islamic State.

German parliament debates Muslim Brotherhood ban

2025-01-31

Shafaq News/ On Friday, the German Parliament's Interior Affairs Committee commenced deliberations over a proposed bill seeking to ban the Muslim Brotherhood (Jamāʿat al-Ikhwān al-Muslimīn) in Germany.

The bill, introduced by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, is titled Ensuring Long-Term Internal Security: Prioritizing the Fight Against Crime, Terrorism, and Anti-Semitism. Following a general debate on Thursday, the parliamentary administration referred the proposal to the Interior Affairs Committee for further examination and the preparation of a report ahead of a parliamentary vote.

The legislation calls for a definitive ban on "Islamic and anti-Semitic organizations," while ensuring that any measures align with the rule of law. The Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliated entities are explicitly named as primary targets of the ban.

The AfD argued that concrete executive action is necessary, particularly against the German Muslim Community Association (DMG), the principal branch of the Brotherhood in Germany, along with its associated organizations. The bill further urges authorities to scrutinize mosque associations for "potential infiltration attempts by the Muslim Brotherhood," particularly regarding imam training programs, the promotion of Islamist ideologies, and foreign influence. It calls for immediate action to curb these risks.

Additionally, the bill seeks a reassessment of counter-extremism and counter-terrorism policies to ensure they reflect the "actual and statistically documented threats posed by politically motivated violent crimes." This realignment aims to enhance Germany’s broader strategy against radicalization.

The AfD, alongside the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has been one of the most vocal proponents of stringent measures against political Islam and the Muslim Brotherhood in Germany. The party’s recently published 85-page election manifesto for the upcoming February 23 elections describes political Islam, in its "sometimes violent form," as the "greatest threat to Western Christian culture in Germany."

The AfD warns that ignoring these threats could jeopardize Germany’s liberal society, stating, "If the liberal Western society turns a blind eye to the dangers posed by political Islam, these dangers will not diminish but will instead threaten the very existence of liberalism itself… We will confront this."

The party also advocated for the systematic banning of Islamist organizations and mosque associations that meet the necessary legal criteria. Furthermore, the AfD proposed a legal prohibition on foreign funding for mosque construction and operations within Germany. The manifesto stipulated that "Imams preaching in Germany should be committed to our constitution, deliver sermons in German when possible, receive their training domestically, and possess a C1-level German language certificate from the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages."

Founded in Egypt in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna, the Muslim Brotherhood has grown into a prominent transnational Sunni Islamist organization. While originally focused on religious and social activities, it evolved into a political movement advocating for governance based on sharia law. Over time, the Brotherhood expanded its influence beyond Egypt, establishing itself as a significant political force in various Muslim-majority countries.

In Europe, the Brotherhood has developed an extensive network of NGOs, mosques, schools, and lobbying organizations since the 1950s. This network wields considerable influence over Muslim communities and European policymakers. Germany, in particular, has reported substantial Brotherhood activity, raising concerns about the organization's penetration into institutions such as universities and other public sectors.

German immigration bill rejected despite far-right backing

February 01, 2025

The German parliament has rejected immigration measures put forward by the conservative opposition and backed by the far-right.

Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz, who is tipped to be Germany's next chancellor, had tried to rely on support from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party for the second time in a week - but the bill was defeated by 350 votes to 338.

The strategy was widely condemned, including by Merz's predecessor as CDU leader and former chancellor Angela Merkel, who accused him of turning his back on a previous pledge not to work with AfD in the Bundestag.

Merz defended his actions as "necessary" and said he had not sought the party's support.

"A right decision doesn't become wrong just because the wrong people agree to it," he said.

The CDU leader had been hoping that a tougher stance on migration would win over supporters of the AfD - but his reliance on that party for this vote risks losing more moderate voters.

Thousands of people took to the streets of Germany on Thursday night in opposition to the CDU's cooperation with the far-right.

The CDU is leading in the polls ahead of Germany's snap election next month. The AfD is currently polling in second place, although Merz has ruled out any kind of coalition with them.

Wednesday's vote saw a non-binding motion over changes to immigration law pass through parliament. Friday's vote was on draft legislation which was aimed at curbing immigration numbers and family reunion rights.

The proposed legislation was opposed by parties including current Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats (SPD). Scholz is among those to have criticised Merz's reliance on the AfD, calling it an "unforgivable mistake".

"Since the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany over 75 years ago, there has always been a clear consensus among all democrats in our parliaments: we do not make common cause with the far-right," he said.

In a rare political intervention, Merkel said Merz was breaking a pledge made in November to work with the SDP and the Greens to pass legislation, not the AfD. She described the pledge as an "expression of great state political responsibility".

On Wednesday, Alice Weidel, the leader of the AfD, accused mainstream parties of disrespecting German voters by refusing to work with her party.

Sections of the AfD have been classed as right-wing extremists by domestic intelligence.

Germany's already fraught debate on immigration has flared up following a series of fatal attacks where the suspect is an asylum seeker, most recently in the city of Aschaffenburg.

It has become a central issue in campaigning for the election, which was triggered by the collapse of Scholz's governing coalition.

Shariah panels: NSCIA urges South West govs, monarchs to protect rights of Muslims

by Saheed Salawu

January 31, 2025

THE Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on governors and traditional authorities in the southern part of the country, particularly the South West, to ensure that the constitutional rights of Muslims in their respective domains are preserved and protected.

The NSCIA, the apex Islamic authority in the country, stated this amidst the alarm and resistance trailing efforts of the Muslim communities in Oyo and Ekiti states to establish independent Shariah arbitration panels.

In a statement signed by its Deputy National Legal Adviser, Imam Haroun Muhammad Eze, the body said it could not find any legal justification for the resistance and therefore threw its weight behind the move to establish the Shariah panels in the two states.

Describing the objections from both political and traditional quarters as unwarranted, the NSCIA explained that the arbitration panels are a voluntary platform designed solely for the resolution of civil and marital disputes among consenting Muslims.

According to the council, the panes are also to fill “the inexplicable vacuum created by the failure of the political elite in South-Western Nigeria to establish Shariah courts, as allowed by the Nigerian constitution, in South-Western states, despite the huge population of Muslims in the region.”

The NSCIA expressed regret that the development from Ekiti State came barely a few weeks after the announcement on the inauguration of a Shariah panel in Oyo State generated “unnecessary anxiety” that led to its indefinite postponement.

It said, “This and other cases, such as the denial of the rights of female students to wear the hijab despite a Supreme Court judgement, are nothing but calculated attempts to prevent Muslims in the region from practicing their faith.

“Meanwhile, Arbitration and the Shariah Court of Appeal, just like the Customary Court of Appeal (which all of the South West states have) are provided for in the 1999 Constitution (as amended) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (see section 275), confirming the legality of both initiatives.”

“The NSCIA strongly supports the establishment of Independent Shariah Arbitration Panel in Ekiti and Oyo states for the purpose so intended, especially where the Muslims in the states have been denied their constitutional right to a Shariah Court of Appeal in all the states of the South-Western Nigeria. The Council cannot find any legal justification for the unnecessary alarm and unwarranted resistance. All the states in the North have Shariah Courts and some, in addition, have Customary Courts.

“The Council calls on the governors and traditional authorities in the southern part of the country, particularly the South-West, to ensure that the constitutional rights of Muslims in their respective domains are preserved and protected. While others are allowed to live, Muslims should also be let live.”

Muslim Ummah Capable Of Funding Qur’an Convention – Sheikh Bala Lau

ByMuslim Yusuf

Sat, 1 Feb 2025

The national leader of the Jama’atu Izalatul Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS), Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau, in this interview, spoke on the controversy over the sponsorship of a planned Quran Convention. Speaking shortly after a special lecture (Muhadara) at the JIBWIS national secretariat in Abuja within the week, the Islamic leader boasted that the Muslim Ummah had the financial resources to organise the convention.

Can you summarise some of the key points of your Muhadara on the planned Qur’an Convention?

The forthcoming Qur’an Convention on February 22 is all about the presentation of the Holy Qur’an, where reciters and memorisers will come together under one umbrella and leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto. This conference or convention is organised by the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs in Nigeria. All the Islamic organisations were invited; and we are part of it.

So, we think it is obligatory upon us to tell our teeming viewers and followers that this is the mission which is to bring all the reciters and memorisers of the Holy Qur’an through Tsangaya and those who memorised through Musabaka.

We realised that no avenue brings them together to understand each other, to present papers and awareness even though we all have a common goal to achieve, which is that the Qur’an is only one; our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is one; we are facing one Qibla; we have one book, one ummah; then how are we going to come together?

In my organisation, if we want to organise anything, we have many ways of sending messages to our followers. But as long as there is unity, we want to have the unity of the Muslim Ummah; and this is paramount. The Sultan is going to lead. He called upon us and we accepted. We are part and parcel of this programme.

But there are lots of misconception about this gathering; why?

Politicians came in and people thought the convention was organised by the government. It is not true. I told you who organised it; we are Islamic organisations.

Where were you when we intervened on the issue of Niger Republic and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)? Is it not scholars that came together and intervened and peaceful coexistence reigned between Nigeria and Niger? That intervention means a lot; it created a lot of awareness between Nigeria and Niger and brought a lot of change.

So, for us as Islamic scholars, we feel it is mandatory and obligatory upon us to have a place where the gap between those who recite the Holy Qur’an and memorise it through Tsangaya and those who memorise it through Musabaka and learn more about Tajweed would be bridged. We want to close this gap so that they can come together and understand each other; and at the end of the day, papers will be presented.

How do you intend to fund this event?

The Muslim Ummah can fund it. I even said that under our organisation we have more than 15,000 Jumu’ah mosques and if we say that every mosque should contribute N10,000 and you multiply it by 15,000, how much is it going to be?

There are lots of well-wishers who want to contribute as a way of putting their wealth into the cause of Allah. So the Muslim Ummah has the means and ways of bringing contributions through this kind of gathering.

Many Nigerians insist that there is likely a sole sponsor for the event; what do you think?

There is no sole sponsor for this programme. People are just saying what they want, but as far as we are concerned, we want your contributions. Please bring your contributions and I will bring my own.

Do you think the Muslim Ummah cannot sponsor this kind of programme? If this programme is going to cost N1 billion or N2 billion, under the JIBWIS, in a month we will be able to raise up to N600 million or N1 billion. What do you think about other organisations? Can they not do it? Even if the government wants to take part and contribute, who will say no? Are we not part of the government? We brought the government to power, so we have the right to ask the government to sponsor or present assistance since they want peace and harmony to reign in Nigeria.

Why is this event coming at a time of immense hardship in the country?

It is not about hardship, there are other conferences held during this period. Why can’t we hold this convention? The period of hardship is a time you create awareness so that the Muslim Ummah will understand. The hardship comes from who? From Allah; and if you find yourself in pleasure, it comes from who? From Allah. So, it comes back to Allah. We need to continue to recite the Holy Qur’an and propagate the oneness of Allah. And if you believe in Allah, he will do a lot for you.

UN ‘alarmed’ at reported summary executions of civilians in Sudan

February 01, 2025

GENEVA: The UN rights chief said Friday that he was “deeply alarmed” by reports of summary executions of civilians in Khartoum North, allegedly by Sudanese army fighters and allied militia.

“Deliberately taking the life of a civilian or anyone not or no longer directly taking part in hostilities is a war crime,” Volker Turk said in a statement.

The war between Sudan’s army (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023 has killed tens of thousands of people and uprooted more than 12 million, according to the United Nations, and pushed millions to the brink of famine.

After months of apparent stalemate in Khartoum, the army last week broke an almost two-year RSF siege of its Khartoum General Command headquarters.

On the same day, the army reported reclaiming its Signal Corps base in Khartoum North, and expelling the RSF from the Jaili oil refinery north of Khartoum.

The UN rights office said it had verified the killings of at least 18 people, including one woman, in seven separate incidents “attributed to SAF-affiliated fighters and militia since the SAF regained control of the area on 25 January.”

“Many of the victims of these incidents, which took place in the vicinity the Al Jaili oil refinery, were originally from the Darfur or Kordofan regions of Sudan,” it said.

The rights office also highlighted “further disturbing allegations emanating from Khartoum North,” which it was still corroborating.

It noted a video circulated Thursday showing men in SAF uniform and members of the Al Baraa Bin Malik Brigade in Khartoum North “reading out a long list of names of alleged RSF collaborators, saying ‘Zaili’ — Arabic for ‘killed’ — after each name.”

“These reports of summary executions, following similar incidents earlier this month in Al Jazirah State, are deeply disturbing,” Turk said, adding that “such killings must not become normalized.”

He reiterated his call for “all parties to the conflict to take urgent action to protect civilians and to uphold obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law.”

“Independent investigations must be held into these incidents in line with relevant international standards.”

The rights office voiced fear of further attacks “amid shocking threats of violence against civilians.”

It said it had reviewed a video showing a member of the Al Baraa Bin Malik Brigade “threatening to slaughter the residents of El Hadj Yusif in East Nile,” an area of Khartoum North.

The office also denounced continued RSF attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, including the shelling of a camp for displaced people in El-Fasher in North Darfur that killed nine civilians on Wednesday.

And on January 24, a drone attack on a maternity hospital in El-Fasher, attributed to the RSF, left at least 67 dead and 19 injured, it said.

“Deliberate attacks on civilians and civilian objects are abhorrent,” Turk said.

“Such attacks constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and may constitute war crimes.”

Stop plot to unleash violence on South-West Muslims –MURIC

by Bisiriyu Olaoye

January 31, 2025

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Director General of the Department of State Security and other security agencies in Nigeria to stop the plot to unleash violence on South West Muslims.

Making the call on Friday, January 31, 2025, was the Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

In a widely-circulated public statement, Akintola disclosed that there has been a plethora of threats in video clips and articles circulated on social media which were directed at Yoruba Muslims and their leaders over the ongoing Shari’ah controversy.

The full statement reads: “We are constrained to call the attention of the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Security (DSS) and other security agencies in Nigeria to stop the plot to unleash violence on South West Muslims. The plot thickens on daily basis as new threats are issued by different Yoruba groups.

“The latest is a statement issued by one Ahmed Saliu Olokoju (names likely to be fake) who called himself the Secretary-General, Yoruba Islamic Salvation Front (YOISF), an hitherto unknown group.

“In an article captioned ‘Shariah in Yorubaland: The Fulani Grand Plot to Destroy Yorubaland’, Olokoju labelled Yoruba Muslims who are supporting civil Shari’ah in Yorubaland as ‘Fulani agents’. This is ethnic bigotry and incitement of one ethnic group against another.

“He also engaged in criminal name-dropping by directly mentioning the names of Muslim leaders and that of a prominent Muslim traditional ruler. He wrote, ‘The game changer to destroy Yorubaland is to introduce Sharia. The rogues, criminals supporting them are one Akintola from Ile Ife who lectures at Lagos State University, the Oluwo of Iwo, Mahmud Adesina and a few others whom we understand have been paid some $10m in advance. To them, religion is profit.’

“This was followed by direct threats to wage ‘holy war’ against proponents of Shari’ah, ‘to seek them, their children, their wives and their businesses’. According to him, ‘…To mobilise and wage holy war against these promoters of Sharia and their agents in Yorubaland. We shall pursue them and seek them, their children, their wives and their businesses wherever they are. Yorubaland must never and can never have Sharia. That is a call for war in families and in communities.’

“Olokoju also mobilized his audience to join his murderous group for training in terrorist acts against Yoruba Muslims. He said: ‘If you are reading this, pass it on, and if join YOISF in your locality for the training and preparation for Jihad against Yoruba rogues, criminals and bastards who are bent on using religion to cause civil war in Yorubaland. We shall stop them with their own SWORD and GUN.’ “This should not be treated with levity. It is no longer a joke. The threats are coming from the right, left and center and it is always against Yoruba Muslims and their leaders, all because we refuse to be forcefully converted to Christianity. We refuse to be assimilated. False Muslim names are being adopted by blackmailers and Christian terrorists who masquerade as Muslims. It is the height of cowardice.

“Above all, it should be noted that all the threats emerging from Yorubaland have emanated from faceless Yoruba groups against Yoruba Muslims. Meanwhile, Yoruba Muslims have remained cool, collected and unperturbed without responding in like manner.

“We want the security agencies to take note of this and to rise to the task. Nobody should change the narratives after Yoruba Muslims have been attacked. It is clear now that the first threats came from the other side. It is only logical to assume that the first attack or attacks will also come from the other side. The security agents can prevent the mayhem if they move now.

“Besides, the presidency cannot afford to ignore threats of war coming from the president’s own people. This is the time for Aso Rock to pay attention to religious rumblings in the president’s backyard.

“In like manner, we call all religious leaders in the geopolitical zone to take necessary steps towards dousing tension on the Shari’ah imbroglio because any religious war in Yorubaland will spell doom for the whole South West population.

“MURIC will not make provocative statements. Neither shall we incite Muslim youths. But the latter are equally watching the scenario. They are not fools. We are also aware that there is a limit that we can continue to hold their reins. This is why the security agents have a duty to stop the spate of threats. Non-Muslims have no right to dictate to us how to practice our religion.

“We have confidence in the professionalism and non-partisanship of the Nigerian security agencies. Those threatening to unleash violence on Muslims must be stopped. The time is now.

“We appeal to all Yoruba Muslims and their brethren in faith all over the country to remain calm and patient. There should be no inflammatory remarks or provocative writeups.

“We urge the entire Nigerian Muslim Community to abide by the principle of peaceful coexistence laid down by the leadership of the Nigerian Supreme Council For Islamic Affairs (NSCIA). We are a disciplined people and ours is a religion of peace. Let us be good ambassadors of Islam.”

The Court Has Not Declared IGP Position Or Egbetokun Illegal – SAN

1 February 2025

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Ayotunde Ogunleye, has declared that the position of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) or its occupant, Kayode Egbetokun, has not been declared illegal by any court.

Naija News reports that there have been debates over the legality of the IGP’s tenure, with many saying Egbetokun ought to have retired since he is over 60 years old.

Recall the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, who has been one of the vocal critics of IGP Egbetokun’s continuous stay in office.

Sowore repeatedly labelled Egbetokun as an “illegal” IGP, citing the public service rules of the country, which peg the retirement age for public servants at 60 years and serving for more than 35 years.

However, Ogunleye, while speaking on Friday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today, said Egbetokun’s tenure is legally binding, squashing claims about the legality of his continued stay in office.

Ogunleye dismissed Sowore’s comments, describing them as an opinion to which every Nigerian is entitled.

He said, “My opinion is that upon a proper appreciation of the law – particularly taking into consideration the amendment to the [Police] Act in 2024 and the declaration or statement or advisory issued by the Office of the Honorable Attorney General- Kayode Egbetokun, our honorable Inspector General of Police, is legitimately occupying his office,” he said on Friday’s edition “That is the law.”

“The court has not declared that office illegal or that the occupant is occupying it illegally. It is therefore wrong for anybody to assume the position of adjudication and make such a bold statement which is his own opinion,” the SAN said.

“Mr Sowore is entitled to express his opinion because there is freedom of expression in Nigeria. But what we should not do is to mistake our opinions and use them to replace facts and law because that would in itself be wrong.”

The Police Service Commission (PSC) had earlier directed all senior officers over 60 and those who have served for more than 35 years to retire, but Ogunleye said the agency has no power to retire the IGP.

‘Appeal Court Ruling Is Welcome, It’s A Fresh Motivation To Destroy And Dismantle IPOB, ESN’ – Nigerian Military

31 January 2025

By Oladipo Abiola

The Nigerian Military has welcomed the Appeal Court ruling, which affirmed the proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The Director, Defence Media Operations, Edward Buba, said the Appeal Court ruling was indeed a morale booster for the troops in the task of crushing the group and their armed sect known as the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Naija News recalls the Court of Appeal in Abuja has upheld the 2018 ruling by the Federal High Court, which proscribed the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and classified it as a terrorist organization.

Delivering judgment on Thursday, a three-member appellate court panel unanimously ruled that the federal government acted within the law in banning the group, citing its activities as a threat to national security and stability.

Justice Hamma Barka, who delivered the lead judgment, dismissed IPOB’s appeal, ruling that all issues raised by the group lacked merit.

Reacting to the court ruling in a chat with Daily Trust, Buba said the military has been given a fresh motivation to destroy IPOB and the ESN.

“The armed forces applauds the recent Appeal Court Ruling affirming the earlier declaration of IPOB as a terrorists group.

“The ruling is indeed a welcomed development that further motivates troops to expedite action in destroying and dismantling the IPOB terror group and their ESN cohorts,” Buba said.

Rare disease experts arrive in Riyadh for annual summit

RASHID HASSAN

January 31, 2025

RIYADH: Experts from around the world converged on Riyadh on Friday for the third Saudi Rare Disease Summit, where the role of artificial intelligence in early detection, diagnosis and treatment is among the key topics.

Organized by the Saudi Pediatric Neurology Society and Maarefah Management, the two-day event will provide a platform for more than 200 researchers, clinicians, caregivers and policymakers to share their knowledge and ideas and discuss ways to optimize patient care.

Fahad Al-Bashiri, a consultant pediatric neurologist at King Saud University and president of the SPNS, said the summit “stands out as a platform for sharing the latest advancements in rare disease management.”

“Experts will explore innovative approaches to diagnosis, treatment and patient care, and insights from local and regional experts to enhance the knowledge and practices of participants,” he said.

One of the highlights of this year’s event would be a session dedicated to empowering patients and families and addressing the challenges they face, he said.

Dr. Mohammed Al-Omari, a consultant in pediatric neurology at King Fahad University Hospital, said that while rare diseases might individually affect only a small number of patients, “collectively they constitute a large entity, touching families and communities.”

“It’s important to raise awareness and work together to solve the challenges of rare disease patients. Everyone with a rare disease deserves hope, care and a better future,” he said.

How Saudi Arabia is preserving its precious freshwater resources

HAIFA ALSHAMMARI

February 01, 2025

RIYADH: Water scarcity is a pressing issue in Saudi Arabia, significantly impacting the country’s socio-economic development as well as its environmental sustainability.

As one of the hottest and driest regions in the world, the Kingdom faces many challenges owing to its limited natural freshwater sources and high rates of evaporation.

These harsh realities have forced the country to rely on limited groundwater and desalination plants, where 75 percent of the country’s water supply comes from.

However, the nature of the desalination process raises concerns about environmental sustainability and carbon emissions due to the amount of energy used by these technologies.

In addition, the over-extraction of groundwater for agricultural and domestic use could exhaust natural aquifers and deteriorate water quality.

This realization has pushed officials to explore solutions to develop the water sector in order to meet the needs of the Kingdom’s growing population.

Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 reform agenda emphasizes green development, and sustainable water sources are a key aspect of the plan.

To achieve this objective, the Kingdom is collaborating with foreign companies including the US firm Ecolab to mitigate the severity of water loss.

Christophe Beck, chairman and CEO of Ecolab, outlined some of the company’s strategies to preserve water while reducing energy usage.

“In 2024, we helped preserve enough water for 800 million people, and we are on the path to 1 billion by 2030,” Beck told Arab News.

“We have built our capabilities around the world because of the science we have at our disposal. We have 3,000 people in research and development and digital technology.

Ecolab operates in 40 different industries across 172 countries, managing water supplies, combating potential pollutants and infections, and focusing on human and natural resource protection.

The company has been operating in Saudi Arabia for 47 years, collaborating with local firms such as Saudi Aramco, SABIC, and Almarai.

“This country has a lot of natural resources and a lot of ambition. But one thing is missing — water. There are no lakes, no rivers, but there is a lot of sea around us. However, this is not freshwater. That’s a big challenge,” said Beck.

The necessity to preserve freshwater has led the Kingdom to introduce water conservation programs, along with promoting efficient irrigation technologies and enhancing public awareness about water usage.

In addition, the National Water Co. has completed several operations to ensure easy access to fresh water for all in any location within Saudi Arabia, including rural areas.

NWC distributed more than 3.7 billion cubic meters of water during the past year in various regions of the Kingdom and treated more than 2.1 billion cubic meters of wastewater during the same year.

However, achieving water security will require a holistic approach that integrates technology, media, and community engagement.

“Awareness helps, as does realizing that no one can solve it alone,” said Beck.

“When I think about Saudi Arabia, I think we have all we need. The natural resources, the industries, the means, and the ambition. But we don’t have water, and we have too few water experts who know how to reuse or recycle water to power the future industries of the Kingdom.

“What I hope to accomplish in Saudi Arabia, and again, we’ve been here for 47 years, is really thinking in the long term, to turn Saudi Arabia into an example of a country that can grow without using more water at the same time.

“And if Saudi Arabia can do it, many countries around the region can do it, and around the world as well.”

Addressing water scarcity is crucial for ensuring the long-term viability of Saudi Arabia’s economy and overall quality of life.

Without significant and immediate action, the challenges associated with water scarcity and with the increasing heat conditions and drought worldwide, are likely going to intensify not only for Saudi Arabia but for several other countries in the region in the coming years.

Exploring the history of Saudi Arabia’s ancient Dumat Al-Jandal

HAIFA ALSHAMMARI

January 31, 2025

RIYADH: In the heart of Al-Jouf, around 50km away from Sakaka, is the city of Dumat Al-Jandal — or, to give it its ancient name, “Adumato.”

Civilizations and kingdoms have thrived here for thousands of years, leaving behind traces of their existence carved onto walls and corners.

“It was a rainy period with rivers and forests, then it turned into a savanna, then into a period of little rain, then the habitation moved to other nearby sites such as the site of Al-Jamal and the site of Al-Rajajil,” explained Hussain Al-Khalifah, a Saudi archaeologist with over 30 years’ experience.

“After that, the Arabian Peninsula became a desert as we see it today. In ancient times, humans moved to sites with fertile soil and water resources. Therefore, Dumat Al-Jandal is one of the oldest cities inhabited around the second millennium BCE,” he said.

A trade road was created to exchange goods and link regions, and Dumat Al-Jandal was one of the significant points on this for people coming from the south of the Arabian Peninsula.

“It was an important point at the beginning of the land trade,” Al-Khalifah told Arab News.

“Dumat Al-Jandal was strong and rich because of trade. The people were protectors of the trade that passed by the city and, therefore, they took some of the goods in exchange for protecting merchants.”

Among the kingdoms and empires that tried to control Dumat Al-Jandal were the Assyrians, who made numerous attempts to control and capture the lands.

However, another kingdom was rising at the same time — the Arabian Qedarites, which not only prevented the Assyrians from taking Dumat Al-Jandal but also expanded their territory until they reached Palestine, Al-Khalifah said.

The Assyrians captured Adumato eventually, though the exact date is unknown.

They were known to document information on clay tablets, some of which can still be seen today at Dumat Al-Jandal. They are among the primary sources that mention Arabs, providing a description of the people of the city and one of their queens, Talkhunu, among others.

They also mention a rebel named Yabu who revolted against Ayatea, the king of Dumat Al-Jandal who was loyal to the Assyrians.

The Assyrian king, an advocate of justice who despised aggression and rebellion, sent warriors to aid Ayatea who caught Yabu and put him in chains.

The tablets also mention a popular souk which took place each year on the first day of spring.

Jeddah literary event to explore oral, written expressions

January 31, 2025

JEDDAH: The Jeddah Literary and Cultural Club will hold its 21st Literary Text Forum from Feb.4-6.

The three-day event will explore “Literary and Cultural History in Saudi Arabia between Oral and Written Traditions,” bringing together prominent writers, critics and intellectuals from across the region.

Dr. Abdullah bin Owaiqel Al-Sulami, the club’s president, said the forum would continue the club’s mission to foster critical dialogue and deepen literary discourse through comprehensive historical and critical studies.

This year’s edition will honor historian Mohammed Abdul Razzaq Al-Qash’ami for his significant contributions towards documenting Saudi Arabia’s literary and cultural heritage.

The forum’s agenda reflects the dynamic evolution of Saudi Arabia’s cultural landscape, structured around nine core themes examining the interplay between oral traditions and written expressions.

According to Al-Sulami, these sessions will explore how these have shaped the Kingdom’s cultural narrative.

Dr. Abdulrahman bin Rajallah Al-Sulami, who heads the forum’s scientific committee, outlined the scope of the event.

Sessions will examine aspects of Saudi cultural heritage including ancient oral culture origins, historical inscriptions and documents, handicrafts and their literary manifestations, oral literature genres and literary narratives in biographies and memoirs.

He said the forum served as an intellectual platform aimed at motivating researchers and intellectuals to study and develop literature while promoting literary and creative trends.

The forum has drawn significant academic interest, with 50 research papers submitted, from which 20 were selected for presentation. Organizers say this robust response underscores the forum’s relevance to contemporary cultural discourse in Saudi Arabia.

Al-Sulami expressed gratitude to those whose papers were accepted, as well as to the researchers who contribute valuable perspectives to the forum.

Balad Beast energizes historic Al-Balad with electrifying performances

AFSHAN AZIZ

January 31, 2025

JEDDAH: The Balad Beast music festival brought together more than 70 artists from across the globe, lighting up the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Al-Balad on two unforgettable days over Jan. 30-31.

The festival, organized by the Saudi-based MDLBEAST, took over four stages — Bab Square, Omda Square, Roshan Square, and Souq Square — with each designed to capture the spirit of the historic district.

The charm of Al-Balad was enhanced by mesmerizing projections of colors and patterns, transforming the district’s iconic buildings into a visual journey that bridged Jeddah’s rich past, dynamic present, and promising future.

Ahmad Alammary, the chief creative officer at MDLBEAST, who is also known by his stage name of DJ Baloo, told Arab News: “I think Al-Balad is organically, naturally unique.

“This is our third edition. While the first two were very similar, this time we made subtle changes to the layout. We moved a stage that was previously further back, bringing it closer to the other stages to create a better flow.

“The lineup is fresh every year, featuring both our local legends and emerging talents from around the world. There’s so much creativity in Balad that it provides endless inspiration for our graphics and projections. We even draw inspiration from the unique elements of the district, from the roundabouts to the cats running through the streets.”

The festival’s energy was further elevated by acts like Grammy-winning 21 Savage, Atlanta rap sensation Gunna, and the soulful Michael Kiwanuka, alongside regional favorites like Disco Misr, Dish Dash, and Gazi on Jan. 30.

Day two brought performances by hip-hop legend Wiz Khalifa, producer Metro Boomin, Ghostly Kisses, Tina Savage, and the energetic duo Hats & Klaps, with an exciting performance by Saudi Arabia’s all-female rock band Seera adding a local twist to the festivities.

The Saudi duo Hassan and Abbas Ghazzawi, also known as Dish Dash, told how the festival and its vibrant surroundings influenced their music.

They said: “Everything around us is a source of inspiration: the scene, the music, it all plays a role.

“We’re constantly exploring new places, and our upcoming track ‘Aiwa Aiwa,’ set to release in April, reflects this journey.

“We’re incorporating more Arabic vocals now because of the amazing response we get when we perform in Saudi Arabia or any Arabic-speaking country. Even with tracks that the crowd may not fully understand, they still sing along.

“We’ve been recording Arabic samples for some time now, and it’s been incredible to see how the audience connects. Our Jeddah slang track, in particular, has been a hit, and it’s thrilling to watch the crowd embrace something so locally authentic.”

For emerging artists, they advised: “Believe in yourself. What took us 10 years to achieve, people today could accomplish in one year or even less, as long as they put in the hard work and trust their instincts. Don’t be afraid to chase your dreams and show others what you're capable of.”

Korolova, another standout international performer, expressed her admiration for the cultural significance of Al-Balad.

She said: “It was amazing to perform for my friends from Saudi Arabia. It’s incredible to feel the energy from the crowd. When you share that energy, it means a lot.

“The inspiration comes from many places, not just in the moment, but also from my family, my daughter. They push me to keep creating.

“I played a few of my new releases here at the festival, one for the Tomorrowland label which is set to release on Feb. 7, and also another track I tested here for the first time.

“It was amazing to see how people connected with the music. I also respect the culture of this place, which is so rich and unique. It’s the first time I’ve performed in such a historic location, and it’s magical. I even played tracks from Saudi Arabian labels.

“I have a deep respect for the culture here, and performing in the old city was a truly magical experience. I have played at many great venues, but this one is a special place.”

The celebration was not just about the music but also the experience of Al-Balad itself.

Alammary added: “We have to do very little to change it from year to year. Balad is such a rich and healthy campus to play with, and each year we continue to create new experiences while honoring its essence.”

Booze, oil and orange juice: How Canada could fight Trump tariffs

1 Feb, 2025

Canada will react forcefully and immediately if Donald Trump imposes tariffs, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday.

The US president has said he could levy a 25% tariff on Canadian imports as soon as Saturday.

"It's not what we want, but if he moves forward, we will also act," Trudeau said.

Tariffs are a central part of Trump's economic vision. He sees them as a way of growing the US economy, protecting jobs and raising tax revenue.

Economists suggest that such a move could have devastating immediate impacts on Canada's economy - while also leading to higher prices for Americans.

"I won't sugarcoat it - our nation could be facing difficult times in the coming days and weeks," Trudeau said in his televised address to Canadians.

Canada is trying to avoid a trade war altogether. It has pledged more than C$1bn ($690m; £560m) to boost security at its shared border with the US - a key point of contention for Trump, who appears to be using tariffs as a negotiating tactic.

Trudeau said all options were still on the table - here are four of them, and their possible impacts.

1. Targeted tariffs on select US goods

Canada has already fought one tariff "war" with Trump.

During his first term, the US president slapped 10% tariffs on Canadian aluminium products and 25% tariffs on Canadian steel, citing national security concerns.

Ottawa retaliated by imposing tariffs on select goods, which were chosen to send a political message to Trump and his allies.

It put levies on Florida orange juice, and whiskey and bourbon from Tennessee and Kentucky - the latter being the home of then-Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell.

Both countries ended up agreeing to lift the tariffs a year later.

Senior Canadian officials recently told local media that if Trump imposed tariffs again, the immediate response would likely be targeted.

According to US government data, 17% of US exports go to Canada. More than 75% of Canada's exports go to the US.

Canada stands to suffer a larger economic blow in any trade war with the US and this stark imbalance is why targeted tariffs are often the first and safest approach, said Peter Clark, a lawyer who previously worked on trade policy issues in Canada's federal finance department.

By targeting select goods, Canada can hit the US without widely punishing its own citizens, as tariffs can immediately raise prices for consumers at home.

This approach is also why officials are pushing a "Buy Canadian" campaign as a way to lessen the impact of a potential retaliation.

But pundits argue that Trump is less politically vulnerable this time, given that he cannot run for a third term in the White House.

"You won't have the same impact as last time," said Julian Karaguesian, an economics lecturer at McGill University in Montreal and a former finance counsellor at the Canadian embassy in Washington DC.

2. Dollar-for-dollar tariffs

Another move Canada made in its first tariff war with its neighbour was to apply dollar-for-dollar tariffs.

It slapped identical tariffs on US aluminium and steel, and ensured the total dollar value of the American goods it taxed equalled the US tariffs on Canadian exports. That came up to around C$16.6bn at the time.

This time, the possible use of dollar-for-dollar tariffs could be much larger, with Canada reportedly preparing a first round on about $37bn of goods, according to official sources quoted in Canadian media.

That could be expanded to another C$110bn worth of goods.

The challenge is that Canada still does not know just how sweeping Trump's tariffs would be. The more sweeping they are, the more goods Canada would have to tax in response.

Canada and Mexico face 25% tariffs on Saturday, Trump says

Not all of Canada is on board with dollar-for-dollar tariffs. Scott Moe, leader of the mineral-rich province of Saskatchewan, has said that broad levies on US goods would "rip this country apart".

Mr Karaguesian said the promised US tariffs on Canadian goods could plunge the country into a recession. If Canada responded with dollar-for-dollar tariffs, it could lead to inflation.

This would result in "stagflation," he said, referring to a combination of high unemployment and rising prices.

Mr Clark said that whatever decision Canada took, politics would likely be top of mind. Polls suggest a majority of Canadians support retaliation, and that many Canadian business leaders want targeted, dollar-for-dollar tariffs.

Canadian politicians might be pushed to respond more forcefully if it means a boost in approval, Mr Clark said. "We're talking about political decisions, which are not always rational."

3. The energy 'nuclear' option

One of the most valuable assets in Canada's arsenal is energy.

North-eastern US states like Vermont, New York and Maine significantly rely on electricity sold to them by neighbouring Canadian provinces. British Columbia and Manitoba also supply energy to western and Midwestern regions of the US.

About 30 states receive some of their electricity from Canada, according to Canadian government data.

Canada is also the top supplier of crude oil to the US, making up 60% of total oil imports, according to the US Energy Information Administration.

Doug Ford, Ontario's premier, has suggested that Canada cut off Americans' supply to pinch Americans at the petrol pump.

Trump said on Friday that Canadian oil would be hit with lower tariffs of 10%, which could take effect later, on 18 February. But Canada still has the option of energy restrictions or taxes to inflict pain.

"The only thing that would really sting in the immediate to short-term is if energy prices went up, because Trump himself campaigned on bringing energy prices down very quickly," said Mr Karaguesian.

But the move would be contentious, especially with the oil-rich province of Alberta - which has refused to sign off on taxing its oil and gas exports, arguing that doing so would disproportionately hurt its economy.

4. Pulling US booze - or not retaliating at all

Other ideas have been floated.

Ford said that Ontario could pull American-made alcohol off shop shelves in the province, signalling a different approach in which different provincial premiers could define their own responses.

Another option is not retaliating - at least for now. For weeks, Canadian officials have been meeting their American counterparts in Washington DC in a bid to stave off any American tariffs in the first place.

On Wednesday, foreign minister Melanie Joly met Secretary of State Marco Rubio to deliver a message that tariffs would be bad for both countries, and that Ottawa was addressing US concerns about border security and fentanyl trafficking.

"We need to continue to engage," she told reporters.

Canada has also signalled that it could bring in a relief programme for businesses harmed by the possible tariffs, similar to those introduced during the Covid pandemic.

Some argue, given the economic costs of retaliation, that Canada should instead focus on diversifying its trade relationships and increasing domestic production.

"We're a natural resource superpower," Mr Karaguesia said, adding that the country could use the tariffs as a push to harness that potential and sell its products elsewhere.

Prosecutors add two more women to Sean Combs case

January 31, 2025

Prosecutors in New York have expanded their case against rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs, accusing him of coercing two additional women into commercial sex acts, and of dangling a person over an apartment balcony.

Combs has been in jail since September after an initial indictment charged him with racketeering, sex trafficking by force, and transportation to engage in prostitution.

On Thursday, the indictment was updated to add two more victims, although no new charges were added to the case.

The musician, 55, has strenuously denied all the accusations against him, including the federal criminal case and more than 30 separate civil lawsuits.

In response to the superseding indictment, his lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, said the prosecution's case "remains flawed".

"The government has added the ridiculous theory that two of Mr Combs's former girlfriends were not girlfriends at all, but were prostitutes. Mr Combs is as committed as ever to fighting these charges and winning at trial."

The original indictment identified only one victim, named in court documents as "Victim-1", whose accusations aligned closely to those of Cassandra Ventura - the singer who sued Combs for rape and sex trafficking in 2023.

In the new filing, prosecutors allege that Combs "used force, threats of force, and coercion, to cause victims, including but not limited to three female victims" to engage in commercial sex acts.

That alleged violence was vividly illustrated in a video of the musician kicking, dragging and throwing a vase at Ms Ventura at a Los Angeles hotel in 2016.

In the new indictment, prosecutors claim that "Combs, with the assistance of several close associates, paid hotel security staff $100,000" (£80,000) for the footage.

However, it was leaked to CNN last year. Combs later said he was "disgusted" by the footage and had sought "professional help" after the incident.

Ms Ventura said the violence she had experienced "broke me down to someone I never thought I'd become".

New claims added

The updated indictment signals that federal prosecutors are widening their case against Combs as his trial date in May approaches.

A footnote to the document notes that their investigation is ongoing and that further updates will be filed "as promptly as possible" ahead of the trial.

Amongst the new developments, prosecutors have moved the alleged start date of Combs' sex trafficking offences back to 2004, four years earlier than previously stated.

They have also expanded the list of narcotics the musician allegedly used to keep his victims "obedient and silent" - adding methamphetamine and psychedelic mushrooms to the previously cited cocaine, oxycodone and ketamine.

The accusation that Combs dangled a woman from a balcony mirrors a claim made in a civil lawsuit filed by fashion designer Bryana "Bana" Bongolan last December.

Prosecutors also added a claim that Combs had assaulted not just women but also "his employees, witnesses to his abuse and others".

The musician's legal team has previously dismissed the charges against him as "baseless" and accused the government of conducting a "witch hunt."

Trump wants to revive ‘Star Wars’ – Russia

31 Jan, 2025

US President Donald Trump’s directive to create an American ‘Iron Dome’ missile defense system is a destabilizing step towards the weaponization of space, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said.

Trump’s executive order to develop advanced missile defenses, issued earlier this week, authorizes the creation of “space-based interceptors,” among other things, the diplomat told reporters on Friday.

“We see this as yet another confirmation of the US focus on turning space into an arena for armed confrontation, warfare, and the deployment of weapons,” Zakharova said.

This would “completely discredit” the previous US administration’s initiative to develop “certain norms, rules and principles” of behavior in space, and would violate the ban on testing direct-ascent and satellite-killer missiles, she added.

Trump’s decisions “indicate Washington's intention to actively develop and expand deeply destabilizing military programs,” Zakharova said, noting that it would expand missile defenses “to a scale comparable to Reagan’s ‘Star Wars’.”

President Ronald Reagan had envisioned a missile shield as part of the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), a Cold War program nicknamed ‘Star Wars’ at the time. Reagan’s proposal touched off an arms race between the US and the Soviet Union.

The US never managed to develop the space-based weapons Reagan wanted, however, and the tensions eventually waned with the signing of several arms-control treaties. Washington has since abrogated almost all of them, including the ABM treaty banning strategic missile defenses to the INF treaty limiting short- and intermediate-range missiles in Europe.

Trump’s program is “openly aimed” at devaluing the Russian and Chinese strategic deterrent, which “will not contribute to reducing tensions or improving the situation in the strategic sphere, including creating a basis for a fruitful dialogue on strategic armaments,” Zakharova said on Friday.

Such dangerous ideas reinforce the importance of Russia’s proposals to create legally binding instruments for preventing an arms race in outer space, including tools to prohibit the deployment of space-based weapons, she added.

The January 27 executive order instructs the Pentagon to create a plan for protecting the US territory from “ballistic, hypersonic, advanced cruise missiles, and other next-generation aerial attacks from peer, near-peer, and rogue adversaries” using a multi-layered missile shield.

Such an “Iron Dome” – a name borrowed from Israel’s short-range missile defense – would include the “development and deployment of proliferated space-based interceptors,” capable of shooting down incoming ballistic missiles during their boost phase, as well as unspecified “capabilities to defeat missile attacks prior to launch,” according to the text of the order.

US system predicting global famine offline amid Trump freeze

1 Feb, 2025

The United States' system for monitoring famine globally has been taken offline amid President Donald Trump's order for a 90-day freeze on nearly all US foreign assistance.

The Famine Early Warning System Network (Fewsnet) was established after the 1984 famine in Ethiopia, as part of a worldwide effort to prevent a repeat of its devastating impact.

It was designed by US government agencies, including its international development body USAID and the space agency Nasa.

It is regarded as a gold standard in combining weather data and political analysis to predict drought and food insecurity globally.

Alongside a model run by the UN, the system allows aid officials to target emergency food supply ahead of time, and is credited with mitigating the effects of a devastating drought in the Horn of Africa in 2016.

It has been used to try to target aid during the current famine in Sudan as the war continues there.

A briefing service provided by the network was stopped as part of Trump's suspension of nearly all foreign assistance, according to a source familiar with Fewsnet's operations.

Asked about the shutdown, USAID said it was "expeditiously processing exception requests" but could not "address every individual exception-related question". It was not clear whether an exception request for Fewsnet was pending.

The network is "insanely important", according to Dave Harden, who oversaw its operation at USAID during the 2016 food security emergency in East Africa.

"Because we had Fewsnet, and we had guard teams, we were able to pre-position food and supplies [in Ethiopia] and plant it in a way that was remarkably different than what happened in 1984," he told the BBC.

Last Friday, the State Department issued a "stop-work" order on all US foreign assistance, worth nearly $70bn a year, with the exception of emergency food aid and military aid to Israel and Egypt, pending a 90-day review to ensure programmes' alignment with Trump's "America First" foreign policy.

Since then, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expanded the scope of projects eligible for waivers to the order, including for life-saving medicine and shelter, but there remains widespread confusion in the global aid sector, significant parts of which have been upended by the freeze.

Fewsnet is operated by a USAID contractor, which declined to comment, while its website is run by another provider which did not respond to requests for comment.

Explaining the thinking behind the breadth of stop-work orders, Mr Rubio said on Thursday that "things that save lives" were being exempted, adding that others could apply for waivers to ensure their projects were not an inefficient use of US taxpayer money and were aligned with Trump's priorities.

Proponents of the foreign aid freeze see US donations as bloated and carrying too much of the burden compared with other wealthy Western countries.

The Trump administration has also vowed to end foreign aid funding for diversity and inclusion programmes, transgender rights, family planning, abortions and other issues long targeted by many Republicans.

The exemption for emergency food aid does not appear so far to have included the famine-tracking operation.

Jeremy Konyndyk, a former senior official at USAID, described the system as "the single best resource" in the world for food insecurity prediction, adding that in 2011 it saw the famine coming in Somalia months ahead of time.

"The client was the US government… but everything was put online. And that was really important - it became a global public good, [because] any donor in the world can use that, any government in the world can use that," he said.

"It's a really critical resource… sounding the alarm when there is a major food crisis emerging."

A USAID spokesperson said: "We are expeditiously processing exception requests. Several urgent requests have been approved within hours. We cannot address every individual exception-related question but commit to transparency consistent with the President's Executive Order.

"The Secretary of State has approved core life-saving humanitarian assistance and issued waivers for specific purposes. Implementers of existing life-saving humanitarian assistance programs should continue or resume work."

Medical jet with six aboard crashes into Philadelphia neighbourhood

1 Feb, 2025

A small medical transport plane has crashed into several buildings in north-east Philadelphia, setting homes and vehicles ablaze and injuring people on the ground.

The jet was on a medical transport mission on Friday evening and carrying four crew members, a child patient and the patient's escort, Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, a medical aircraft company, said in a statement.

"We know that there will be loss," Pennsylvania Gov Josh Shapiro said during a news conference at the scene of the crash, calling it an "awful aviation disaster".

Emergency crews rushed to the evening crash scene as residents crowded streets littered with fiery debris and pieces of the aircraft.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene with people who were injured and structures ablaze.

The child on board the plane was receiving care in the US for a life-threatening condition and was returning to Tijuana, Mexico, Shai Gold, a spokesman for Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, told a local NBC outlet.

The girl was accompanied by her mother, a pilot, a copilot, a doctor and a paramedic, the spokesman said.

Mr Gold told NBC the child's treatment was sponsored by a third-partner charity.

"She fought quite a lot to survive, and unfortunately, this tragedy on the way home," he said.

The Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia put out a notice on X for Mexican nationals affected by the incident to call a helpline.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said city officials do not know the number of fatalities, but the city is "asking for prayers for anyone and everyone that may have been affected".

"If you see debris, call 911, don't touch anything," she told city residents.

The crash happened just blocks from the Roosevelt Mall, a three-storey shopping center in a densely populated part of Philadelphia, the fifth biggest city in the US.

The area where the crash occurred is filled with terraced housing and shops.

Videos of the incident online show the plane coming down quickly and sparking a huge fireball.

Witnesses described shrapnel from the crash damaging cars and sending burning debris into the streets. Photos of the aftermath show burning cars mangled.

One man who spoke with CBS, the BBC's US partner, said he was driving in the area when he heard a whirring sound and then a loud explosion.

"Everyone just started screaming," he said.

One witness told local media that the explosion "lit up the whole sky".

"I just saw a plane basically hit the building and it exploded. The sky lit up and I pulled over and basically, it was just real bad around here," the witness told WPVI-TV, describing the crash as feeling like an earthquake.

Ryan Tian, 23, told The Philadelphia Inquirer he was getting dinner when he saw a "massive fireball" that turned the sky orange.

"I thought we were getting attacked by something," he said. As he saw people start to flee, he decided to get "outta there".

What do we know about the crash?

The plane, a Learjet 55, took off from the Northeast Philadelphia Airport about 18:30 local time and crashed less than four miles (6.4km) away, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The FAA said in a statement that the flight was en-route to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri. At first, the agency said two people were on the plane but later revised that to six.

According to data on FlightAware, a flight tracking website, the plane was operated by a company called Med Jets, and had arrived in Philadelphia from Florida less than four hours earlier.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating.

In a statement, President Donald Trump said his administration was "totally engaged".

"So sad to see the plane go down in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. More innocent souls lost," he said.

The plane crash comes just two days after a much larger collision happened between a commercial jet and a military helicopter in Washington DC, where officials suspect all 67 people aboard both aircraft were killed.

It was the deadliest plane crash in the US in over 20 years.

'When it happens, it breaks you' - Ice skaters reel from US plane crash

1 Feb, 2025

No one at the Skating Club of Boston had any doubt that 13-year-old Jinna Han and 16-year-old Spencer Lane would go far in a sport they had fallen in love with.

Even at a club that has produced countless elite-level skaters - where the competition is as tough as it gets - the two stood out.

"They had been sought out and identified as the future of the sport," the club's CEO Doug Zeghibe told me while standing alongside the rink where the two athletes trained day in and day out.

"So, to see such promising talents snuffed out, it's hard. They really, truly were on the cusp of greatness and really, finally hitting their goals of representing not just the Skating Club of Boston but representing their country."

That talent, on full display in videos that show them both performing with a strength and maturity beyond their ages, was why they were invited to the High Performance Camp that followed the US National Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas, this week.

After the camp, they boarded an American Airlines regional jet on Wednesday evening, planning to fly home to Massachusetts via Washington DC. They were among the 60 passengers killed when the jet had a mid-air collision with a helicopter and fell into the Potomac River.

Their mothers, Christine Lane and Jin Han, and the club's star coaches Vadim Naumov and Evgenia Shishkova, were also on board, meaning that six of the crash victims were all connected to the world-renowned skating club.

Skating at such a high level demands a huge commitment, with schoolwork being carried out online after hours on the ice each day.

Inevitably, close relationships develop among coaches and club members alike and, in the face of such a disaster, the clubhouse is a natural place to gather.

Just a few days ago, club members Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov won the US pairs title in Wichita before taking an earlier flight home.

"They were just two sunshines that you get the energy from as soon as you see them," Efimova told me.

"Every time I would walk into this ice rink, I would see them in the morning tying their skates, saying, just saying 'hello,' seeing their faces lit up."

"Spencer was a firecracker, that's the best way to put it," Mitrofanov added.

"He started skating fairly later than other skaters, but because of his amazing talent, he progressed so quickly."

At the end of a hard day's training, they told me, the two would take their skates off and head upstairs to begin catching up on academic work.

Now, in the club's entrance, photographs capturing them in motion on the ice are surrounded by tributes and flowers. Jinna has her arms outstretched. Spencer maintains a look of deep focus on his face.

"You don't expect it," Mitrofanov said. "And when it happens, it breaks you."

Coaches Naumov and Shishkova, originally from Russia, were the 1994 world pairs skating champions. They leave a 23-year-old son, Maxim, another promising talent from Boston who finished fourth in the men's competition in Wichita.

In its more than 100 years of history, the club has seen before how success can be quickly overshadowed by tragedy.

It was home to 10 of the 18 members of the US figure skating team killed in a plane crash on the way to the 1961 world championships in Prague.

CEO Zeghibe immediately thought of that crash as he watched the unfolding news on Wednesday night.

"My first thought was this can't be happening again," he told me. "And I was just like, how can lightning strike twice?"

One of the club's many well-known alumnus, Nancy Kerrigan has also been at the club to show her solidarity and mourn the loss of the six lives.

Before her 1994 Winter Olympics silver medal, an assailant struck her knee with a baton after a practice session. It was later revealed the attacker was hired by the husband of Kerrigan's rival, Tonya Harding.

"The community stood behind me and I was grateful for that," she said.

"And so, it's my turn now to hopefully be here. I'm not sure what it is to do. Maybe get a cup of coffee or hug. I'm here for hugs. I don't know, it's just I want to be able to give back what I feel like I got."

In just a few weeks, the club is organising the World Figure Skating Championships taking place in the city in March.

It's a huge responsibility to bear.

"It all requires a lot from us, not just in running this club, not just in running the World Championships, but now also in managing grief," Zeghibe said when I asked him how they would cope.

The event will be a chance to honour the lives lost, not only from this club. A total of 14 members of the figure skating community were killed in the crash.

"I think looking to the future is part of the emotional healing process," he said, "and it's good to have things to focus on that are positive for the sport."

"We're going to take it day by day, be there for our members as much as possible, and then figure out: How do we move forward?"
