Hindu Outfit Bajrang Dal Begins Excavating Firozabad’s Kashmiri Gate Site To Unearth ‘Buried Temple’ After Rasoolpur Area Temple

A DAY after members of a local Hindu outfit reopened a temple in Firozabad’s Rasoolpur area that had been closed for over three decades, members of other Hindu organisations began excavating a site in the district’s Kashmiri Gate area on Tuesday, believing that a temple buried for more than six decades might be unearthed, police said.

The members believe that around 60 per cent of the temple is buried approximately 10 feet underground. By Monday evening, they had dug nearly three feet before halting the work as darkness fell. On Tuesday, they resumed the excavation, aiming to complete it by Wednesday. Upon receiving information about the digging, a police team reached the site to prevent any untoward incident.

The district administration and police confirmed that members of Hindu organisations are cleaning the premises of a temple which has been closed for an extended period.

Mohan Bajrangi, the ZilaSehSehyojak of Firozabad’s Bajrang Dal, claimed that the information about the “buried temple” at Kashmiri Gate was provided by one of their members.

“We are conducting the excavation only after verifying this information with elderly residents of the area. They confirmed that a temple run by a farmer’s family once stood here. The upper portion of the temple is still visible, further supporting this claim. Around six decades ago, the family left the area and took the idols with them. With no one visiting the site, the temple gradually became buried,” said Bajrangi, who also played a key role in reopening the temple in Rasoolpur.

The district chief of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), Rajeev Sharma, said, “We believe that the temple is over 100 years old. Around six decades ago, people stopped visiting for worship, leading to its closure. A large portion of the temple is buried and we are now excavating it. The area surrounding the temple has remained vacant.”

Sharma added, “Earlier, some families lived near the temple, but over time, they relocated. A few families now reside in the area. Once the temple is fully excavated, we will be able to determine whether any idols remain inside.”

ASP Firozabad, Ravi Shankar Prasad, said, “There was a temple that had been closed as people stopped visiting for worship. People are now cleaning the premises to resume prayers there. There has been no objection or reaction to the move.” Firozabad City Magistrate Rajendra Kumar said the land on which the temple stands is “privately owned and has not been encroached upon”.

On Sunday, after learning about a temple in the Rasoolpur area that had remained locked for over three decades, members of a Hindu organisation visited the site and broke open the lock. They then offered prayers.

UK Islamic LeaderSays Children Should Identify As Muslim First, British Second

01/07/2025

The frontrunner for the leader of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said he wants Islamic children to be taught to identify themselves as Muslim instead of British.

Wajid Akhter, a general secretary-hopeful for the MCB, warned that if children are taught to identify as their nationality or ethnicity, they could become shallow, but identifying with their faith "provided a solid foundation to approach life," per The Telegraph. Akhter is the former assistant secretary general and current National Council member of the MCB. He is also currently a doctor from Essex who had a senior role in The Muslim Vote, which aimed to put pro-Palestinian UK politicians in power last election.

According to a think tank analysis of Akhter's speeches and writings, he called being a Muslim an "act of revolutionary defiance … at odds with the prevailing culture" and condemned New Year celebrations as "pagan," "mixed-gender," and "the first step on a slippery slope."

The UK's longest-serving Muslim MP, Khalid Mahmood, however, said that "The views exposed by Policy Exchange are deeply disturbing. That the MCB keeps getting it wrong is no accident - it is a design fault, rooted in its ideology. The Government rightly refuses to engage with the MCB and this demonstrates why that policy should not change."

Akhter has stated during speeches that Muslims should “organise” and “unite” into a “powerful community” that would “change from the hand that is begging to the hand that is giving,“ adding, "We all want Saladin [a Muslim leader who defeated the Crusaders] to come today."

He said he was part of a movement “trying to unite the Muslim world politically" and stated "If we unite, we can win."

Osama Bin Laden's Alleged Bodyguards And 9 Al-Qaeda-Linked Prisoners Released From The Notorious Guantanamo Bay

 07 Jan 2025

-----------

The US Pentagon has confirmed two men alleged to be the bodyguard of September 11 mastermind Osama bin Laden have been released.

The two men were Moath Hamza Ahmed al-Alwi and Suhayl Abdul Anam al Sharab, both alleged to have been bin Laden’s bodyguards, al-Alwi is also an accused al-Qaeda fighter.

The men were held at the notorious Guantanamo Bay, a US naval base in Cuba used to house people suspected of terrorist activity. The Pentagon said the two men and nine others -all of the men were from Yemen - were transferred to Oman this week after they were held for two decades without charge.

The move was part of the Biden administration’s push to clear the controversial base of detainees held there without charge.

"The United States appreciates the willingness of the government of Oman and other partners to support ongoing US efforts focused on responsibly reducing the detainee population and ultimately closing the Guantanamo Bay facility," the US Defence Department said in a statement.

"Although different processes, each of the Yemeni detainees underwent a thorough, interagency review by career professionals who unanimously determined all detainees as transfer eligible consistent with the national security interests of the United States."

The total number of men detained at Guantanamo is now 15. This is the lowest number since the base was turned into a detention site for mainly Muslim men amid President George W. Bush’s administration's so-called “war on terror” in 2002.

Also released was Shaqawi al-Hajj, who had undergone repeated hunger strikes and hospitalizations at Guantanamo to protest his 21 years in prison, preceded by two years of detention and torture in CIA custody, according to the US-based Centre for Constitutional Rights.

Rights groups and some lawmakers have pushed successive US administrations to close Guantanamo or, failing that, release all those detainees never charged with a crime. Guantanamo held about 800 detainees at its peak.

The Biden administration and administrations before it said they were working on lining up suitable countries willing to take those never-charged detainees.

Many of those stuck at Guantanamo were from Yemen, a country split by war, with its capital held by the Iranian-allied Houthi militant group.

The sultanate of Oman, on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, did not acknowledge taking in the prisoners.

The key Western ally has taken in some 30 prisoners in the past since the founding of the prison.

However, those prisoners have since been released in circumstances unexplained by Oman.

Two Afghans, once held by Oman, returned to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan in February.

One Yemeni died in Oman after being told he and 27 others would be repatriated to Yemen, the British activist group CAGE International said.

"Faced with little choice, 26 of the men and their families returned to Yemen after being pressured by the Omani government, which offered each $70,000 as compensation," the group said. It wasn't immediately clear what happened to the 28th prisoner.

The transfer leaves six never-charged men still being held at Guantanamo, two convicted and sentenced inmates, and seven others charged with the 2001 attacks, the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, and the 2002 bombings in Bali, Indonesia.

Bangladesh Govt Scraps Passports Of Sheikh Hasina, 96 Others

Jan 8, 2025

---------

The Department of Immigration and Passports has cancelled passports of 97 individuals, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, over their alleged involvement in enforced disappearances and killings during the July-August mass uprising.

Of them, passports of 22 people were scrapped for their alleged involvement in enforced disappearances, Azad Majumder, chief adviser's deputy press secretary, told a press conference at Foreign Service Academy yesterday.

He said passports of 75 others, including Hasina, were revoked for their alleged involvement in violence during the uprising that killed hundreds.

Azad, however, did not disclose the names of 96 others.

He said the Indian authorities are already aware of the matter of revoking the passport of Hasina as they said, "India has issued travel documents for her."

Azad added that expatriate Bangladeshis who sought passports would also get text messages from the authorities as soon as their passports are ready for delivery.

He mentioned that it was earlier discussed that applications of 1,97,000 machine readable passports are pending and authorities have printed 1,82,745 MRPs. These new MRPs will reach the embassies soon.

The deputy press secretary added that the authorities of the department are taking different steps to make the passport offices free from "brokers".

He added that the government is planning to appoint some "agents" for helping the service seekers, which will be helpful to break the syndicate of brokers.

On the delay of textbook distribution, Azad said that as of Monday, around 11 crore textbooks out of 40.15 crore had been printed and most of them had already reached schools.

He hoped that students would get all textbooks by the end of this month. He also blamed the delay on non-cooperation of some of the textbook printers and said, "The education ministry will probe the incident."

Meanwhile, CA's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman held a meeting with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus at state guesthouse Jamuna in the evening.

Topics of discussion included electoral reforms, national unity, and reforms in the banking sector. However, the date of the election was not discussed, he added.

Talking about the next election, Shafiqul referred to what the chief adviser said during his address to the nation on December 16.

Prof Yunus said the next polls can be held between the end of 2025 and the first half of 2026 after accomplishing necessary reforms.

Responding to a query about abduction along the Teknaf border, Shafiqul said the government is making significant efforts to improve law and order. According to information from law enforcement agencies, the situation has improved.

About the border killings, he said the previous government remained largely silent on the issue. But the current government has been protesting every such incident.

------------

At least 19 terrorists were killed as security forces conducted three separate operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), the military’s media wing said on Tuesday.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said three soldiers were also martyred during the clashes with the militants on January 6-7.

It said the security forces conducted an intelligence-based operation in general area Matani of Peshawar district on the reported presence of militants.

During the conduct of operation, the army troops effectively engaged the terrorists’ location and resultantly, eight militants were shot dead.

The ISPR said the second IBO was conducted in general area Baizai, Mohmand District.

In ensuing fire exchange, the military’s media affairs wing said that eight terrorists were effectively engaged and neutralised by the security forces.

In another engagement in Karak District, army troops effectively engaged terrorist location and as a result of which three militants were killed.

However, during intense fire exchange, the ISPR said that three brave sons of soil, Lance Havaldar Abbas Ali, 38, Naik Muhammad Nazir, 37 and Naik Muhammad Usman, 37, having fought gallantly, paid the ultimate sacrifice and embraced shahadat [martyrdom].

Sanitisation operations were conducted to eliminate any other terrorist found in the area.

“Security forces are determined to wipe-out the menace of terrorism from the country and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve,” the ISPR added.

The year 2024 turned out to be the deadliest for Pakistan’s civil and military security forces in a decade with at least 685 fatalities and 444 terror attacks, according to “CRSS Annual Security Report 2024” issued by Centre for Security and Strategic Studies.

Equally alarming were the cumulative losses of civilians and security personnel, i.e, 1,612 fatalities, accounting for over 63pc of the total recorded this year, marking 73pc more losses compared to 934 outlaws eliminated, The News reported citing CRSS report.

The overall fatalities recorded previous year were a record 9-year high and over 66% more than 2023. On average, nearly seven lives were lost daily, with November emerging as the deadliest month across all metrics, compared to all other months of the year.

The violence took the heaviest toll on KP which topped in human losses with 1,616 fatalities, followed by Balochistan with 782 fatalities. In 2024, the country suffered 2,546 violence-linked fatalities and 2,267 injuries among civilians, security personnel and outlaws.

This tally of casualties stemmed from 1,166 incidents of terror attacks and counter-terror operations, marking a grim year for country’s security landscape.

With Eye On Muslim Votes, Owaisi’s Party Plans To Contest 10-12 Seats in Delhi

Jan 7, 2025

Hyderabad/New Delhi: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is planning to contest 10-12 seats in the upcoming Delhi elections. So far, it has announced only two candidates — Tahir Hussain from Mustafabad and Shafur Rehman, who is the Jamia Alumni Association (AAJMI) president, from Okhla.

AIMIM's Delhi unit, in consultation with party president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, is likely to announce the remaining candidates in the next couple of days.

Sources in AIMIM told TOI the Delhi unit is keen to contest from Babarpur, Ballimaran, Chandni Chowk, Okhla, Jangpura, Sadar Bazar, Matia Mahal, Karwan Nagar and Seelampur. Most of these constituencies have a large population of Muslims. Except Karwan Nagar, which was won by BJP in 2020, the others have been electing an AAP candidate for the last two terms.

If AIMIM fields a candidate in Jangpura, the person would be up against AAP's former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia. BJP has fielded Tarvinder Singh Marwah while Congress has given a ticket to former councillor Farhad Suri.

AIMIM's Delhi head Shoaib Jamai said the party has the scope to become a kingmaker, adding it will support any party that defeats BJP and can beat it in the future too.

On fielding Delhi riots accused Tahir Hussain from Mustafabad, Jamai said everyone has the right to contest elections in a democracy. "Other parties too are fielding candidates who went to jail. Ultimately, it is the people who decide who should represent them. We are trying to give voice to those suppressed," he added.

Hussain was linked to the 2020 Delhi riots, with the police naming him as a key accused. AAP parted ways with him after he was charged. Recently, he got a reprieve in a related case after Delhi High Court quashed an FIR against him.

AIMIM had contested the municipal polls from a few wards in northeast Delhi and Muslim-dominated constituencies. Owaisi had campaigned in the national capital, but the party drew a blank.

The smaller parties have largely not been able to pose any major challenges to AAP and BJP in the assembly polls, which have been a bipolar contest. The third player in the ring, Congress, has seen its vote percentage erode in recent times, shrinking to 4% in the last assembly elections.

Sambhal violence: UP police to get non-bailable warrants against 91 absconding accused

 by Amit Sharma

January 7, 2025

The police in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal are set to approach a local court to get non-bailable warrants issued against 91 absconding accused allegedly involved in the large-scale violence that broke out in the town on November 24 last year following a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid. Four people died and several others, including police officials, were injured in the violence.

“We have so far arrested 54 accused, including six women who pelted stones on the police from their rooftops that day. Ninety-one more offenders are on the Sambhal police’s radar for their involvement in the violence. They have either taken shelter in other states or are at their relatives’ places in nearby districts. We will approach the court to get the non-bailable warrants to hasten the arrest process. None will be spared,” Krishna Kumar Bishnoi, Superintendent of Police (SP), Sambhal, said on Monday evening.

The district police recently arrested Adnan Mohammed, 30, a resident of the Deepa Sarai locality in the town from Batla House in New Delhi. Mohammed had allegedly fired at the SP during the violence. The police have also arrested Zikra Khatun, 45, who had allegedly pelted stones at senior police officials during the violence.

The local court had ordered a survey of the mosque after a suit was filed claiming that it was built after destroying a temple. The suit was presented on November 19, and on the same day, the trial court allowed the request for appointing an advocate commissioner for a survey of the mosque. The violence broke out while a second survey was being carried out on November 24.

Police say Delhi riots conspiracy planned through ‘inimical forces of neighbouring countries’, oppose bail of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam

by Sohini Ghosh

January 8, 2025

Opposing the bail pleas of student activists Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and six others accused in the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots larger conspiracy case, the prosecution Tuesday told the Delhi High Court that the “conspiracy was planned to be executed through inimical forces of neighbouring countries”.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Chetan Sharma told the HC, “It is a case of clinical, pathological conspiracy planned and executed with diabolical and ruthless intentions.”

While concluding his arguments opposing the bail pleas of eight, Sharma added, “(the) conspiracy was planned to (be) executed through inimical forces of neighbouring countries.”

The accused are broadly seeking bail on grounds of delay in trial and parity with other accused in the case — student activists Asif Iqbal Tanha, DevanganaKalita and Natasha Narwal — who were granted bail earlier.

Submitting that the offences which the accused are facing entail punishment up to life imprisonment, Sharma contended that the “question of parity will not come”. He also said the Supreme Court clarified that the grant of bail to them (Tanha, Narwal and Kalita) shall not be treated as a precedent.

The three were granted bail by a division bench of the Delhi HC in June 2021, which was then challenged by the Delhi Police before the SC. While dismissing the state’s appeal, the SC had recorded that it has not gone into the legal position with respect to the matter one way or another, adding that the HC’s judgment “shall not be treated as a precedent”.

Addressing the accused persons’ arguments on grounds of delay in trial, the prosecution said that the ground “may not be true across the board (for all eight accused seeking bail before the HC) since some appeals are coming for the first time.

Khalid and Imam, along with others, are facing allegations of a pre-planned conspiracy to allegedly cause riots in Northeast Delhi between February 23 and 25, 2020. The accused have been booked for offences under the Indian Penal Code, Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, Arms Act, and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and have been in jail for over four years now.

Mehbooba Mufti demands ‘healing touch’ for J&K

Khalid Gul

January 8, 2025

Bijbehara, Jan 7: On the ninth death anniversary of former chief minister and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) founder Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, his daughter and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti called for a renewed “healing touch” for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.Jammu and Kashmir tourism

“Mufti Sahab pursued a policy of healing touch, and today, the people of J&K need it more than ever,” she said addressing the people who had gathered at Sayeed’s graveyard at Darashikov Garden to pay tributes to him. “The hearts of people are aching and their wounds need to be healed.”

Mehbooba cautioned against mistaking the current silence for peace.

“The graveyard silence in the region cannot be equated with peace,” she said.

The PDP chief reiterated her father’s belief in working within the ambit of the Indian constitution.

“We are not seeking the heavens but are demanding the restoration of our lost identity and dignity,” she said.

The former chief minister said that the PDP remains committed to leading the people out of the current challenges.

She also criticised the recent policies in the region.

“Why rake up issues like reservation, satellite townships, and the acquisition of productive land for rail construction without consulting the people?” Mehbooba asked.

She expressed concern over the termination of government employees in Kashmir.Jammu and Kashmir tourism

On the economic difficulties faced by the people of Jammu, the PDP chief said, “The people of Jammu are grappling with significant business losses and no steps are being taken to address their problem.”

Demanding the reopening of routes for economic growth, she stressed the importance of trade and connectivity saying, “The routes opened by Mufti Muhammad Sayeed like the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad Road and Poonch-Rawalakot Road should be reopened.”

Mehbooba said that routes like the Jammu-Sialkot Road should also be opened for economic prosperity.

She asserted that the people were the true heirs to her father’s legacy.

“Efforts were made to weaken the PDP, but you stood by us during tough times. The party remains steadfast in fighting for your rights,” the former chief minister said.

Earlier, accompanied by her senior party leaders and family members, she offered prayers at Mufti Muhammad Sayeed’s grave to mark the occasion.

President Azerbaijan On Ardabil Provocation: Provincial Mullah Must Be Punished

 7 January 2025

BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 7. During an interview with local television channels, President Ilham Aliyev touched upon the provocation in Ardabil, where a local mullah hurled insults and spread slander about Azerbaijan, Trend reports.

"As for the provincial mullah's hateful attitude towards us, this is not the first time. That mullah from the city of Ardabil has repeatedly used insulting expressions against Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani people, including me. The question here is what the attitude of the person who appointed him to that position is. After all, he did not come and sit there on his own. We know very well who appointed him. What is his reaction, does he support this or not, and who will apologize to Azerbaijan? Will they apologize or not?

The regret in the statement of the Iranian Foreign Ministry is not enough. There was an open insult: both the presidents of Türkiye and Azerbaijan, our peoples, and during a live broadcast at an official event. And only regret? This, of course, is unacceptable. Therefore, we believe that the provincial mullah should be punished. At the very least, he should be dismissed from his post and made to apologize to Azerbaijan. This is the point," President Ilham Aliyev said.

Faisal Islam: Soaring UK borrowing costs are a problem for Rachel Reeves

7 January 2025

Economists have warned that the government is "on course" to miss its own Budget borrowing targets after interest rates for UK long-term borrowing rose to their highest levels this century.

The official forecaster, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), will start the process of updating its forecast next month to be presented to parliament in late March.

The rising cost of borrowing means "there is a significant chance that the OBR will judge that the Chancellor Rachel Reeves is on course to miss her main fiscal rule", according to Ruth Gregory from Capital Economics.

The yield on the 30-year gilt reached 5.25% on Tuesday, surpassing a previous high in October 2023.

The government generally spends more than it raises in tax. To fill this gap it borrows money, but that has to be paid back - with interest.

One of the ways it can borrow money is by selling financial products called bonds.

A bond is a promise to pay money in the future. Most require the borrower to make regular interest payments.

UK government bonds - known as "gilts" - are normally considered very safe, with little risk the money will not be repaid.

Gilts are mainly bought by financial institutions in the UK and abroad, such as pension funds, investment funds, banks and insurance companies.

Servicing the current national debt in the UK is forecast to take up 7% of total public spending, but that forecast was based on lower government borrowing rates.

No.10 said there was "no doubt about the government's commitment to economic stability" and "meeting our fiscal rules is non-negotiable" saying that only the OBR's forecast is an accurate predication of the government's room for manoeuvre.

The clear indication from the government is that although they will not hold another Budget in March, any necessary adjustment would have to come in terms of some new spending cuts.

This morning a £2bn auction of 30 year UK government debt sold at an effective interest rate of 5.18%.

The Debt Management Office, a part of Treasury, effectively paid the highest interest rates for these very long term loans that have been since 1998.

Eyebrows raised over issuance

The markets are raising their eyebrows about debts around the world, and in particular the level of issuance of bonds from countries such as the UK and the US, and additionally, the likelihood of sticky, above target inflation.

Thirty-year debt such as this does not have a direct pass through into borrowing rates for households and companies. This type of debt is more of a specialist instrument used by pension funds. But today's auction shines a light on an uptick of borrowing rates over the past month.

The more general gilt market move, has not yet significantly changed fixed mortgage rates for example. But if it continues, as is plausible, for the next month or so it will impact the OBR's new forecast.

The rise in rates has affected the US and the UK more, and less so continental Europe. The tick-up in UK market rates after the Budget, initially faded by early December. But now British borrowing rates are moving up alongside US ones.

Stagnant growth and sticky inflation have raised concerns about so-called "stagflation". Markets are starting to question the inflationary impacts of incoming President Donald Trump's trade and tax policies.

So while this is not a crisis, it is a new reality. Markets are questioning if the UK really can sustain higher growth and restrained inflation. And those questions are now occurring against the backdrop of the Trump trade tumult affecting global markets for borrowing. It's a bumpy start to 2025.

SAS had golden pass to get away with murder, inquiry told

8 January 2025

A former senior UK Special Forces officer has told a public inquiry into alleged war crimes in Afghanistan that the SAS had a "golden pass allowing them to get away with murder".

The accusation was published by the Afghanistan Inquiry on Wednesday as part of a release of material summarising seven closed hearings with members of UK Special Forces.

The officer, a former operations chief of staff for the Special Boat Service (SBS) - the UK's naval special forces - was one of several senior officers who registered concerns back in 2011 that the SAS appeared to be carrying out executions and covering them up.

In one email from the time, the officer wrote that the SAS and murder were "regular bedfellows" and described the regiment's official descriptions of operational killings as "quite incredible".

Asked by the inquiry during the closed hearings whether he stood by his assertion that the SAS's actions amounted to murder, the officer replied: "Indeed."

Pressed by the inquiry counsel about his decision not to report his concerns further up the chain of command in 2011, he said he regretted his lack of action at the time. He agreed that there had been a "massive failure of leadership" by UK Special Forces.

The former SBS operations chief of staff was one of several senior officers from the Royal Navy's special forces regiment who gave evidence to the inquiry behind closed doors in 2024.

The inquiry, which is examining night raids by UKSF between 2010 and 2013, follows years of reporting by BBC Panorama into allegations of murder and cover up by the SAS.

Only the inquiry team and representatives from the Ministry of Defence have been allowed to attend the closed hearings. The public, members of the media, and lawyers for the bereaved families are not allowed to be present.

The material released on Wednesday summarises the testimony from these hearings. Taken together, the documents – totalling hundreds of pages – paint a picture of the SAS's arrival in Afghanistan in 2009 and the way in which it took over hunting the Taliban from the SBS.

Senior SBS officers told the inquiry of deep concerns that the SAS, fresh from aggressive, high-tempo operations in Iraq, was being driven by kill counts – the number of dead they could achieve in each operation.

Another senior SBS officer who gave evidence was asked whether he stood by his concerns in 2011 that the SAS was carrying out extra-judicial killings.

"I thought and think that on at least some operations [the SAS] was carrying out murders," he said.

A junior SBS officer who also gave evidence to the inquiry behind closed doors described a conversation in which a member of the SAS who had recently returned from Afghanistan told him about a pillow being put over the head of someone before they were killed with a pistol.

"I suppose what shocked me most wasn't the execution of potential members of the Taliban, which was of course wrong and illegal, but it was more the age and the methods and, you know, the details of things like pillows," the junior officer said.

He clarified that some of those killed by the SAS had been children, according to the conversation he relayed. Asked by the inquiry counsel if he meant some of those killed would be as young as 16, he replied: "Or younger 100%".

The junior officer told the inquiry that he feared for his safety should his name be linked to testimony that the SAS had been allegedly murdering civilians.

These SBS officers were part of a small group that was privately raising doubts back in 2011 about the veracity of SAS operational reports coming back from Afghanistan.

In one email, one of the senior officers, who held a post at the SBS headquarters in Poole at the time, wrote to a senior colleague: "If we don't believe this, then no one else will and when the next WikiLeaks occurs then we will be dragged down with them."

The two senior officers were in a position to interpret the language in the regiment's reports, having served with SBS operational units in Afghanistan prior to the arrival of the SAS, when the naval unit was forced to take what it saw as a back seat, pursuing anti-narcotics operations rather than hunting the Taliban.

As well as believing that the SAS may have committed murders, they described in their emails what they viewed as a cover-up in Afghanistan. The second officer told the inquiry chair: "Basically, there appears to be a culture there of 'shut up, don't question'."

At the time, support staff in Afghanistan were sceptical about the SAS's accounts of their operations, judging them not credible.

But rather than taking the concerns seriously, a reprimand had been issued "to ensure that the staff officers support the guys on the ground", another senior SBS officer wrote.

He told the inquiry that in the eyes of the Special Forces' commanding officer in Afghanistan, the SAS could do no wrong, and described the lack of accountability for the regiment as "astonishing".

The documents released on Wednesday also reveal new details about an explosive meeting in Afghanistan in February 2011, during which the Afghan special forces that partnered the SAS angrily withdrew their support.

The meeting followed a growing rift between the SAS and the Afghan special forces over what the Afghans saw as unlawful killings by members of the SAS.

One Afghan officer present at the meeting was so incensed that he reportedly reached for his pistol.

Describing the meeting in a newly released email, the SBS officer wrote: "I've never had such a hostile meeting before – genuine shouting, arm waving and with me staring down a 9mm barrel at one stage – all pretty unpleasant."

After intervention from senior members of UKSF, the Afghan units agreed to continue to working alongside the SAS. But it would not be the last time they withdrew their support in protest.

"This is all very damaging," the SBS officer concluded his email.

Trump blames Biden for Ukraine war

7 Jan, 2025

US President Joe Biden’s inept handling of the tensions between Russia, Ukraine and NATO has led to the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, President-elect Donald Trump told a press conference on Tuesday.

Had Washington not offered Ukraine the prospect of joining the US-led military bloc, war could have been avoided, Trump believes.

Washington’s desire to see Ukraine in NATO, despite Moscow’s legitimate concerns, is what has triggered the conflict, the president-elect told journalists, adding that he believes that Biden “broke” a deal that America had with Russia on how far the US-led military bloc could expand.

“Moscow has repeatedly stated even before President Vladimir Putin came to power that it does not want to see NATO in Ukraine,” Trump stated, adding that it “has been written in stone.” Biden nonetheless insisted that “they should be able to join NATO,” he added.

The president-elect also said he “could understand” how Russia was “feeling about” having a foreign military bloc “right on their doorstep.” “There were a lot of mistakes made” in negotiations between Moscow and Washington during the period preceding Russia’s military campaign against Kiev, he said.

“When I heard the way that Biden was negotiating, I said: ‘you’re going to end up in a war,’ and it turned out to be a very bad war,” Trump said, adding that the ongoing conflict could still escalate even further and become “much worse than it is now.”

The president-elect referred to the ongoing conflict as a “disaster” that “should have never happened” and called it “Biden’s fiasco.” He also vowed to “straighten up” the situation, while still admitting it will be “a tough one.” According to Trump, it would have been much easier to prevent the conflict from breaking out back in 2022 than to settle it now.

Answering one of the journalists’ questions, Trump said that he might need up to six months after taking office to help Moscow and Kiev reach a deal. Previously, he had repeatedly vowed to end the conflict in 24 hours. He still expressed his hope that it could be done “long before six months.”

In late December, Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed that Biden offered him to delay Ukraine’s membership in NATO at the organization’s 2021 summit in Geneva. For Moscow, Kiev’s accession to the US-led bloc was unacceptable “whether it’s in one year or ten years,” the Russian leader said at that time.

Trudeau says 'not a snowball's chance in hell' Canada will join US

Jan. 8, 2025

Jessica Murphy

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has hit back at Donald Trump's threat to use "economic force" to absorb Canada into the US saying there isn't "a snowball's chance in hell" to join the two.

President-elect Trump has in recent weeks repeatedly needled Canada about it becoming the 51st US state.

"You get rid of that artificially drawn line, and you take a look at what that looks like, and it would also be much better for national security," Trump said at a press conference at his Florida Mar-a Lago home on Tuesday.

"Canada and the United States, that would really be something."

Trump reiterated his threat to bring in a "substantial" tariff on Canadian goods unless the country took steps to increase security on the shared US border.

The ongoing tariff threat comes at a politically challenging time for Canada.

On Monday, an embattled Trudeau announced he was resigning, though he will stay on as prime minister until the governing Liberals elect a new leader, expected sometime by late March.

Canada's parliament has been prorogued - or suspended - until 24 March to allow time for the leadership race.

Economists warn that if Trump follows through on imposing the tariffs after he is inaugurated on 20 January, it would significantly hurt Canada's economy.

Almost C$3.6bn ($2.5bn) worth of goods and services crossed the border daily in 2023, according to Canadian government figures.

The Trudeau government has said it is considering imposing counter-tariffs if Trump follows through on the threat.

The prime minister also said on X on Tuesday that: "Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other's biggest trading and security partner."

During his lengthy Mar-a-Lago press conference, Trump reiterated his concerns he has expressed about drugs crossing the borders of Mexico and Canada into the US.

Like Canada, Mexico faces a 25% tariff threat.

The amount of fentanyl seized at the US-Canada border is significantly lower than at the southern border, according to US data.

Canada has promised to implement a set of sweeping new security measures along the border, including strengthened surveillance and adding a joint "strike force" to target transnational organised crime.

Trump said on Tuesday he was not considering using military force to make Canada part of the United States, but raised concerns about its neighbour's military spending.

"They have a very small military. They rely on our military. It's all fine, but, you know, they got to pay for that. It's very unfair," he said.

Canada has been under pressure to increase its military spending as it continues to fall short of the target set out for Nato members.

Its defence budget currently stands at C$27bn ($19.8bn, £15.5bn), though the Trudeau government has promised that it will boost spending to almost C$50bn by 2030.

British Columbia Premier David Eby told a news conference on Tuesday that a number of Canadian provincial premiers will soon be travelling to Washington DC to lobby against the possible tariffs.

On Monday, Doug Ford, the leader of Canada's most populous province Ontario, said Trudeau must spend his remaining weeks in office working with the provinces to address Trump's threat.

"The premiers are leading the country right now," he told BBC News in an interview.

Ontario has a deep reliance on trade with the US. The province is at the heart of the highly integrated auto industry in Canada, and trade between Ontario and the US totalled more than C$493bn ($350bn) in 2023.

"My message is let's work together, let's build a stronger trade relationship - not weaken it," Ford said.

The premier warned "we will retaliate hard" if the Trump administration follows through, and highlighted the close economic ties between the two nations, including on energy.

The US relies "on Ontario for their electricity. We keep the lights on to a million and a half homes and businesses in the US", he said.

At a press conference early this week, Ford also pushed back on Trump's 51st state comments.

"I'll make him a counter-offer. How about if we buy Alaska and we throw in Minneapolis and Minnesota at the same time?" Ford said.

Trump posts maps of Canada as US territory

8 Jan, 2025

US President-elect Donald Trump has shared two maps on social media showing Canada as American territory. He posted the images hours after officials in Ottawa rejected his repeated claim that Canadians would be better off under US rule.

On Tuesday, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to share a map of the US and Canada as a single country, with the state border erased and the words ‘United States’ superimposed on the new entity.

He then posted an image of the territory of both nations painted in the colors of the US flag, accompanied by the words “Oh Canada.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Trump suggested that the US could use “economic force” to absorb its northern neighbor, whose goods he threatened to hit with harsh tariffs.

“You get rid of that artificially-drawn line and you take a look at what that looks like, and it would also be much better for national security,” Trump argued.

Canada’s outgoing prime minister, Justin Trudeau, wrote on X that “there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States.”

Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the opposition Conservative Party, similarly said that “Canada will never be the 51st state.”

Despite the rejection of Trump’s proposal to absorb America’s northern neighbor, politicians in Ottawa have stressed the importance of maintaining good bilateral ties as Canada enters election season. Trudeau announced earlier this week that he would step down as prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party, due to his shrinking popularity.

Trump demands Denmark hands over Greenland

7 Jan, 2025

US President-elect Donald Trump has said he would not rule out military or economic steps to retake control of the Panama Canal or to acquire the Danish-controlled territory of Greenland.

Asked during a press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday if he could “assure the world” that he would not use “military or economic coercion” in his efforts to acquire either one, Trump said he would not.

“No, I can’t assure you on either of those two. But I can say this, we need them for economic security,” he said.

Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire for the US to buy Greenland from Denmark.

“People really don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right to it, but if they do, they should give it up because we need it,” he said on Tuesday, claiming it was an “absolute necessity” for US national security.

Trump's son Donald Jr arrived in Greenland on Tuesday on what he called a “personal day trip” during which no meetings with government officials were planned. The younger Trump arrived in Greenland on a Trump-branded plane and told a crowd that his father “says hello to everyone in Greenland.”

US-based tech mogul and close ally of Trump Elon Musk also appears supportive of the plan, posting on X that he believes that the people of Greenland “want to be part of America” and that they’d be “most welcome.”

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated on Tuesday that Greenland is “not for sale” and never will be. “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” she said.

Greenland is the world’s largest island and sits between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. It is already home to a large US military base and is located on the shortest route from North America to Europe. The territory gained home rule from Denmark in 1979.

Trump has also previously promised to regain control of the “vital” Panama Canal, which the late US President Jimmy Carter signed over to Panama in 1977.

In December, Panama’s President Jose Raul Mulino promised that “every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent area belongs to Panama, and it will continue to be so.”

Also on Tuesday, Trump promised to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, because it has a “beautiful ring” and is “appropriate.”

“That covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name,” he said.

July uprising: Injured victims to be given jobs in police

Jan 8, 2025

The government has decided to recruit those who were injured during the July uprising in police.

Students and retired members of the armed forces, police, BGB, and Ansar will also be eligible for recruitment.

The injured will be appointed to positions based on their physical condition, while students and retired personnel will be recruited to control traffic.

Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the home adviser, yesterday made the announcement after visiting the offices of the Special Branch and Criminal Investigation Department of police.

He said that many were killed or injured during the mass uprising that ousted Sheikh Hasina-led government.

"We discussed how to employ those who were injured. We have already submitted a proposal from Bangladesh Police to hire some of the people who suffered injuries," he said.

"We are trying to recruit as soon as possible those who have recovered from their injuries. Those who are still recovering can also be considered for employment," the adviser said.

He mentioned that each injured victim faces unique challenges. "One has lost an eye, another a finger. They will be placed in departments where their abilities can be best utilised.

"Initially, we plan to start with 100 wounded victims. We will increase the number in phases."

Asked if the recruitment would be limited to police, he responded, "We are starting with the police as it falls under my ministry's jurisdiction. However, we have a plan to expand this initiative to other departments."

Jahangir also talked about the issue of traffic management, saying, "A proposal was submitted to recruit 1,000 students for controlling traffic. So far, 400 students have been recruited."

Besides, another proposal was sent to employ retired employees of army, navy, air force, police, BGB, and Ansar, under the traffic division, he said.

He, however, found a lack of interest among the retired employees.

"I expected more participation, but we have so far got only 50-60 people. We had a plan to start with at least 500 retirees."

Student's managing traffic will work for two or three hours a day, so that their studies are not affected, he said. "They will receive an honorarium."

Responding to a query, Jahangir said money laundering was a major problem under the previous government.

"I have instructed the CID chief to prioritise investigations into money laundering cases including that of the Bangladesh Bank reserve heist.

He added that he had asked the CID to come up with the probe reports without any delay.

About the law and order during the interim government's five months in office, the adviser opined, "You can judge for yourself whether there has been any improvement. Police have resumed their work and are continuously trying to improve the situation."

He, however, acknowledged challenges, including the time required for the new officers to familiarise with their roles, as previous ones have been changed. Besides, there are shortages of vehicles and damaged police stations have yet been repaired fully.

"We are taking these matters seriously and working to address the issues."

The adviser said, "There was no government in place between August 5 and 7. Many fled during that time, some crossed borders into neighbouring countries. However, since we assumed office, no one has fled. If anyone attempts to leave, we will investigate the matter."

Killing of boy: Hasina, 15 others sued at ICT

Jan 8, 2025

Another complaint has been filed against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 15 others with the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for allegedly committing crimes against humanity during a demonstration protesting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh in 2021.

Shafiqul Islam filed the complaint yesterday over the killing of his 17-year-old son Asadullah in a police attack in Brahmanbaria allegedly ordered by the then-government in 2021.

After submitting the complaint, Shafiqul Islam spoke with journalists at the ICT building.

Describing the events, Shafiqul Islam said his son Asadullah went out to buy medicine during the protest on March 28. When Asadullah reached the Cumilla-Sylhet highway, he fell into the chaos of the demonstration.

"Police kicked him and then struck him with a gun. The severe injuries caused him to lose consciousness, but instead of being taken to the hospital immediately, he was kept in a room. It wasn't until midnight that he was finally transferred to Cumilla Medical College Hospital."

"I received a call around midnight from an anonymous person who informed me about the incident and instructed me to go to Cumilla Medical College Hospital."

"When I arrived at the hospital, I found my son lying on the ground with severe injuries. The doctors referred him to Dhaka. When we reached Dhaka Medical College Hospital, some people asked me if I was from Brahmanbaria. Then they threatened to withhold treatment for my son."

"They told me that no hospital in the country would treat my son, as the order had come from the highest level. I pleaded with them to begin treatment, but they ignored my request. Eventually, my son died on March 30."

Shafiqul said, "My son was killed by the police. I came to the ICT to seek justice for his death."

Akhter Hossain, the member secretary of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, accompanied Shafiqul Islam when the complaint was submitted to the ICT.

Akhter, who was one of the leaders of the protest against Modi's visit in 2021 at the Dhaka University campus, told reporters, "People from all walks of life protested across the country against the Indian Prime Minister's visit. Police opened fire on the protesters, resulting in at least 17 deaths.

"Injured people who participated in the protest were even barred from seeking treatment in Dhaka."

On Monday, the International Crimes Tribunal issued arrest warrants against Hasina, her defence adviser Maj Gen (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, ex-IGP Benazir Ahmed, and eight others.

Last year, the ICT issued arrest warrant against Hasina in cases filed for her alleged involvement in crimes against humanity and genocide during the July-August uprising.

Hasina has been staying in India since she fled the country on August 5.

Govt not to change any duty structure until Ramadan ends: Dr Salehuddin

07 Jan 2025

DHAKA, Jan 7, 2025 (BSS) - Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed today categorically said that the government would not change any duty structure until the ensuing Holy Month of Ramadan comes to an end.

“If we change the duty structure, then there might be crisis to some extent. If we also change the policy structure, then there might be some problem. But, message has already been given that until the Ramadan ends, there will be no changes in the structure (duty structure),” he added.

The finance adviser was responding to the queries of reporters after chairing the 2nd meeting of the Advisers’ Council Committee on Government Purchase in this year held at the Cabinet Division Conference Room at Bangladesh Secretariat today.

When asked about the possible changes in the rates of VAT and income tax, he said that the government would rationalize the income tax structure.

“Our goal is that whoever is capable enough will have to pay tax … if a certain person has capability to pay tax, then he or she will have to pay tax (as per rules) and thus the capable persons couldn’t evade tax. We need to enhance our tax collection alongside widening the tax net,” he added.

The finance adviser noted that perhaps it is not possible right at this moment to widen the tax net to a large extent, but ensuring compliance is the most important thing.

About the government’s move for widening the tax net, the adviser said there are still many capable businessmen in the country who do not have VAT registration and TIN certificates.

For bringing those people under the tax net, Dr Salehuddin said he has already asked the NBR to make a quick survey to identify the potential tax payers and VAT payers.

Acknowledging that there is still presence of the extortionists in the supply chain to some extent apart from the middlemen, he sought cooperation from all to address the issue.

The finance adviser said that the government is encouraging those alternate business houses in promoting their business operations who did not get the chance in the last 15 years due to lack of level playing field.

“We’re now suffering due to the policy failure of the previous regime,” he said, adding that had the interim government could not have taken quick actions and proactive policies, then the foreign currency reserves would not have reached $22 billion apart from clearing arrears worth $4.5 billon.

Replying to another question on inflation, he said that the general point to point inflation has declined and it would be better if the trend improves further.

About the rising trend of price hike in rice, he said that the price of rice in one specific item has increased, but the prices of the rest of the items on the whole have not increased.

He said the reason for this is that the domestic harvest is yet to finish fully side by side to some extent due to the supply chain.

“So, we’re considering the matter so that the price of rice does not increase anymore,” the adviser said adding that they have also discussed it with the Ministry of Food and the concerned adviser.

Dr Salehuddin said that they have also suggested the Ministry of Food to import rice from anywhere they can, if necessary making a buffer-stock so that the others excepting the government become more restraint.

“If necessary special OMS can be rolled out,” he added.

Eegarding the government’s preparations on the essential items ahead of the Holy Month of Ramadan, he said that lentil has been imported and procured while the supply of soybean oil has also become stable and tolerable. “If necessary, we can import those items again.”

So, the common people including the middle class people could avail those and there is no such crisis regarding availability of these items, he added.

The finance adviser said that the government should have to strengthen further the market monitoring as it would not work only with the operations of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP), especially the wholesalers and retailers should have to be brought under strict monitoring.

He said that the government’s main principle is that the margin between the production cost at farmers’ level and the selling price at the consumer level does not become so big.

IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja reviews progress on Starlink licence

Kalbe Ali

January 8, 2025

ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja held a meeting on Tuesday with a delegation from Starlink to discuss the progress on the licensing of the satellite-based internet service provider.

Starlink Services, owned by Elon Musk, is one of the most technologically advanced companies globally among those providing internet via Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. The company has already registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), but the government is still in the process of formulating a regulatory framework for LEO satellite landing rights for internet services.

The government aims to address the internet demand and supply gap in the country and expand its outreach to unconnected areas through satellite-based internet connections.

Currently, internet service providers (ISPs) receive internet from 13 high-orbit satellites, while four of these satellites provide communication services to TV channels licensed by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra).

These geosynchronous orbit (GSO) satellites orbit the Earth at about 3,600 kilometers above the surface. In contrast, LEO satellites orbit between 300 and 500 kilometres above the ground and can provide direct internet services to individual and commercial consumers.

Due to regular internet slowdowns and throttling, mainly driven by political reasons last year, many IT service providers with significant international clientele have opted for Starlink internet connections to ensure seamless and uninterrupted service.

A senior executive of one IT company said they were using Starlink’s seamless connection through equipment sourced from the UK. “The rates are as high as 750 pounds per month, but we are confident in smooth business operations, as the internet speed with Starlink is also satisfactory,” the executive added.

Since Starlink has no service structure in Pakistan, IT companies are paying the monthly subscription charges abroad.

However, a senior official of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority warned that using such services is illegal, and the PTA could take action if users are caught.

A key milestone for Starlink is obtaining regulatory approval from the Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board, with the final step before launching services in the country being the acquisition of an operational licence from the PTA.

Meanwhile, Shaza Fatima also chaired a meeting to oversee the development of a regulatory framework for allowing the operation of LEO satellites over Pakistan.

The meeting, held in the minister’s office, reviewed the progress in formulating the regulatory framework, and it was decided that hiring consultants to draft the regulations would be completed within a few weeks.

She emphasised the importance of aligning Pakistan’s satellite technology policies with global standards to fully unlock the potential of these technologies for national growth and development.

Conflicting claims in PTI over Imran Khan's 'house arrest offer'

By Haider Sherazi& Shakeel Anjum & Web Desk

January 08, 2025

ISLAMABAD: As doubts loom over the future of the ongoing dialogue process between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the government, conflicting statements from PTI leaders regarding the alleged "offer of Imran Khan's house arrest" have added another layer of complexity to the situation.

On Tuesday, Aleema Khan, sister of the PTI founder, asserted that the proposal came from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, but party leaders Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Sher Afzal Marwat presented contradicting perspectives on the matter.

PTI's firebrand leader and lawyer Marwat claimed that the proposal of Imran's house arrest was made by the establishment and the government through Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, but the offer was rejected.

He revealed that following the refusal, an alternative offer for the release of the PTI founder was proposed, either after three weeks or by December 20, again conveyed through Naqvi.

Marwat said that the tragic incident on November 26 during PTI's "do-or-die protest" in Islamabad brought a shift in circumstances and led to the initiation of talks with the political leadership.

He acknowledged that the establishment had previously maintained direct or indirect contact at times but clarified that no backdoor negotiations had taken place since the November 26 incident.

According to Marwat, had Mohsin Naqvi been included in the government’s negotiation team, the talks might have already concluded, as Naqvi tends to show significant flexibility at the negotiation table.

Separately, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar expressed an entirely different stance, saying that there had never been any discussion regarding the transfer of the PTI founder to Bani Gala.

In a telephonic conversation with Geo News, he emphasised that neither the government, Naqvi, nor the establishment ever engaged in talks about the PTI founder's release, house arrest, or transfer at any stage.

Gohar clarified that contact with the government was restored shortly before November 26, but the negotiation process had not begun with Naqvi before that date.

Deals have been offered since the beginning: Aleema

While speaking to the media on Tuesday after meeting Imran at Adiala jail on Tuesday, Aleema revealed that offers for deals have been made "since the beginning", but no direct contact has occurred.

She disclosed that Imran was offered house arrest at Bani Gala, and the proposal was brought forward by Gandapur.

"My brother has been in jail for a year and a half. If he wanted to strike a backdoor deal, he would have done so already," Aleema said, asking why propose house arrest now after keeping Imran behind bars for this long.

She further indicated that Imran was also asked to remain silent and avoid speaking out.

Expressing scepticism about the intentions of those involved in negotiations, Aleema emphasised that the PTI founder has consistently made only two demands: the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9 and the release of prisoners.

"A judicial commission should be formed under a senior judge acceptable to all.”

Aleema expressed frustration over the lack of progress, adding that repeated calls for the formation of the commission and the release of prisoners have gone unanswered. She also criticised the authorities for not allowing the negotiation committee to meet with the PTI founder.

Highlighting the importance of judicial commissions in democracies governed by the rule of law, Aleema said that Imran has always upheld these principles. She further alleged that individuals within the government’s negotiating team have “stolen our mandate.”

Commenting on the lack of transparency, Aleema remarked: "Nothing is hidden from the ISI [Inter-Services Intelligence] anymore. Everyone is talking about deals — some suggesting a three-year silence agreement and others proposing different terms."

The 71-year-old cricketer-turned-politician has been behind bars since August last year after he was sentenced in Toshakhana case-I — one of the dozens cases registered against the former premier since his ouster from power in April 2022. His release is a long-held demand of his party

After months of a political tug-of-war, the coalition government and the embattled PTI finally came to the table last month to defuse tensions, with the Khan-founded party initially putting forth two initial demands: the release of the deposed prime minister along with all political prisoners and a judicial probe into the events of May 9 and November 26.

During the two round of talks —held with NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, the PTI negotiation team sought frequent meetings with party founder to finalise the "charter of demands".

Despite the PTI has been quite vocal about their key demands but the party did not share its demands with the government committee in writing.

Currently, the ongoing negotiation process is facing a stalemate as the PTI leadership was denied permission to meet the PTI founder by the authorities concerned.

The key opposition party claimed that they have not been allowed to meet Khan by Adiala jail authorities, while the government cited the former ruling party's inability to present a written charter of demand leading to the NA speaker's hesitance in calling a third meeting, added the sources.

Over 50 deportees land in Karachi, 30 offloaded from flights

By Afzal Nadeem Dogar

January 08, 2025

At least 51 Pakistani nationals deported from seven countries arrived in Karachi over the past 24 hours, while 30 passengers were offloaded from different international flights at the Jinnah International Airport of the port city late on Tuesday night due to irregularities including travel document issues, according to immigration sources.

The development comes a couple of days after at least 30 passengers set for travel to different countries were offloaded from different planes in Karachi over suspicion of human smuggling.

Among those offloaded earlier today, 11 passengers were travelling on business and visit visas to China and Malaysia, immigration sources revealed, adding that four others who were heading to Oman on family visit visas, were also barred from boarding.

Another traveller with a visit visa for Uganda also faced similar action.

Other offloaded individuals included those bound for Saudi Arabia — five on Umrah visas, two on business visas, and two on work visas while a passenger was travelling on a personal visit visa.

Immigration authorities said that these people were barred from travelling owing to inadequate advance hotel bookings, insufficient travel funds, and other procedural shortcomings.

In another development, 51 Pakistani nationals deported from seven countries, including Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom, returned to Karachi during the past 24 hours.

These Pakistanis were flown to Karachi on board different flights.

Among them, 33 deportees arrived from Saudi Arabia and 14 from Iraq, with almost all of them travelling on emergency passports except two citizens who travelled on their original documents.

Countries such as Oman, Zambia, and Qatar also deported one Pakistani each during the same period, the immigration sources said.

30 offloaded over human trafficking suspicion

Immigration officials on January 4 said that most of the 30 offloaded individuals were going to fall victim to human smuggling, adding that most of the detained individuals had been transferred to the Anti-Human Smuggling Circle for further investigation, while some people were allowed to go back home.

Officials reported that the offloaded passengers were questioned for various reasons.

Abid Ali, a passenger bound for Saudi Arabia, was flagged on the Integrated Border Management System (IBMS) list. Similarly, Salman Riaz, a public servant travelling to the Gulf on an employment visa, lacked the required no-objection certificate (NOC).

Several passengers heading to Saudi Arabia — Aftab Ahmed, Mohammad Khalil, Mohammad Riaz, and Ahmed Khan — were found to have incomplete documents. Another passenger, Faiz, holding a visit visa, lacked sufficient funds for travel expenses and hotel bookings.

Officials also suspected Umrah passengers Iqbal, Imran, Mujahid, another Imran, and Ijaz of being involved in human trafficking.

Meanwhile, a passenger travelling to Azerbaijan was offloaded on the suspicion of being linked to human smuggling operations in Europe.

Nine passengers — Fazal, Hussain, Najaf, Liaqat, Kashif, Anzal, Owais, Mohsin, and Shabbir — were also offloaded from a flight to Azerbaijan.

In another case, Oman-bound passenger Shaukat was found without sufficient funds in his bank account for travel expenses and hotel bookings. Babar Khalil and Hamza Javed, also travelling to Oman, were offloaded due to incomplete work visa documentation.

Records showed that Aminullah, another Oman-bound passenger, held two passports issued under his name.

Dubai-bound passenger Saira Bano failed to provide adequate details regarding her travel expenses, accommodation, and purpose of visit.

Furthermore, Nigerian nationals Daniel Saqib and Syed Bilal Hussain were travelling without work visas, while Tanzanian-bound passengers Sadaf Mustafa and Muhammad Ijaz lacked hotel bookings and sufficient travel funds.

Over 180 Afghan nationals deported from Islamabad this month

Munawer Azeem

January 8, 2025

ISLAMABAD: As the Afghan embassy expressed concerns over the arbitrary detention of Afghan nationals in Islamabad, the capital administration said the crackdown only targeted undocumented citizens, with 183 Afghan nationals reportedly deported by the authorities during the current month.

Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon said those who had valid documents, such as Proof of Registration (PoR), Afghan Citizen Cards (ACC), visas, or those listed for third-country resettlement, were not being repatriated.

The administration claimed only two undocumented Afghan nationals were being kept in ‘holding areas’.

The authorities continue to act strictly in accordance with the law, targeting only those who fail to present valid credentials, the administration said, urging foreign nationals to ensure they carried valid documentation to avoid any inconvenience.

A police official told Dawn that they rounded up over 1,000 suspects during the past two days over suspicion of staying in the capital illegally. Out of the total, over 100 were deported, while the others were either ‘held’ or released.

Another police officer said the number of Afghans staying in the capital without documentation was much higher compared to those who had valid visas.

He claimed such refugees were coming to the capital either with families or individually.

Pakistan was not a signatory of the 1951 Geneva Convention, but had welcomed Afghan refugees on humanitarian grounds, an officer said. There are refugee camps for Afghans: 44 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, nine in Balochistan, and one in Punjab but they have moved to urban areas and also bought properties.

It may be noted that the Islamabad police chief, in a November press conference, said that foreigners, including Afghan nationals, who would create a law and order situation would not be allowed to stay in Islamabad.

A deadline of Dec 31 was issued for the Afghan citizens to get a security clearance and obtain NOC from the capital administration to stay in the federal capital.

Meanwhile, the Afghanistan embassy expressed “deep concern over the recent detention of approximately 800 Afghan nationals in Islamabad, including individuals holding valid visas, PoR, and ACC cards”.

“The lack of clarity surrounding NOC requirements/issuance process has led to troubling cases of arbitrary detention and deportation,” said the embassy in a tweet. “Among those deported are 137 Afghan nationals whose visas had expired but who had already applied for extensions, as well as holders of temporary SHARP/UNHCR registration,” it said.

SC urged to let full court hear challenges to 26th amendment

Nasir Iqbal

January 8, 2025

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday received two requests seeking early hearing for the challenges to the 26th Amendment by the full court comprising all its judges.

The first application was filed by Afrasiab Khattak through his counsel Khwaja Ahmad Hosain, which urges the court to order its registrar to fix the petition for hearing before the full court as has been previously decided in accordance with law or, as an alternative, refer the petition to the full court to determine an appropriate forum for exercising jurisdiction regarding the matters raised in the petition.

The other plea was filed by Advocate Taufiq Asif requesting that the petitions challenging the 26th Amendment should be fixed as early as possible in the interest of justice.

Mr Khattak pleads that 26th Amendment did not bar the full court from hearing the cases under Article 184(3). There is a clear distinction in the Constitution between the full court and the benches of the court, he said, adding that Constitution clearly distinguishes between ‘benches’ and the entire court.

To hold that full court did not have jurisdiction would be tantamount to eroding the distinction between the full court and the bench. This would be erroneous, the application said.

The petitioner pleaded that the 26th Amendment had created the constitutional bench, adding that if the challenge to the amendment succeeded then the constitutional bench will cease to exist.

The application contended that the constitutional bench cannot decide the vires of the very instrument that has created it, adding that it would also constitute a conflict of interest as the success of the titled petition would mean that this bench would no longer exist.

The constitutionality and legality of this constitutional bench has been challenged, and effectively a disputed forum would be determining its own legality, which would neither be lawful nor would it be just, it application said.

It is a fundamental principle of justice that it must not only be done but manifestly be seen to be done. The perception that would be created is that the constitutional bench would be sitting in judgement over itself.

The federation has supported the 26th Amendment and it was tabled and supported by the government. It is in the public domain that this constitutional bench has been nominated by votes of government members on the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), the applicant pointed out.

The government is an interested party. The executive would lose its dominance on the new JCP if the 26th Amendment is struck down, the applicant said, adding that the executive would also lose its ability to select the chief justice if this amendment is struck down.

The control given to the executive with respect to judicial matters and internal judicial functioning has been expressly challenged. Therefore, this would further create the perception that a government-sanctioned and government-nominated bench is determining a case in which the government has taken a strong position in favour of the 26th Amendment, the application said.

To ensure the credibility and legitimacy of the Supreme Court and its decisions, the petitions must be listed before the full court. The application said the present case has profound implications for judicial independence, fundamental rights, and ultimately the future course of the nation’s constitutional dispensation.

JCP flags deficiencies in nominations for IHC judges

Malik Asad

January 8, 2025

ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has raised multiple objections to the candidacies of 17 nominees for four vacant positions of judges at the Islamabad High Court (IHC), citing incomplete and deficient applications.

The JCP secretariat informed candidates that the “initial Examination Committee has checked the nominations and has pointed out deficiencies”. According to the secretariat, several nominees failed to attach important documents like educational certificates, law degrees, lists of cases and details of reported judgements.

Documents seen by Dawn show that Islamabad Advocate General Ayyaz Shaukat, one of the nominees, was “not proposed by any [JCP] member”.

His application lacked key documents such as his Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC), high court licence, details of cases handled on behalf of the government, and examples of three best pleadings.

Mr Shaukat was nominated by Roshan Khursheed Bharucha, who was appointed by the National Assembly speaker to represent minorities.

Another nominee, Umer Aslam Khan, did not provide a list of reported judgements, copies of five judgements, three best pleadings, his CNIC and practising licence. His name was proposed by PPP Senator Farooq H. Naek and the Islamabad Bar Council (IBC).

The incumbent chairman of the Implementation Tribunal for Newspaper Employees (ITNE), Shahid Mehmood Khokhar, also submitted the wrong application form.

The document states that “the nominee has filled in Form ‘B’ [meant for the judicial officers]… However, he should have filled in Form ‘A’ for Advocate for which he is eligible.” Mr Khokhar’s name was put forward by PML-N MNA Sheikh Aftab Ahmad.

Nominees Mohammad Abdul Rafeh and Chaudhry Hafeez Ullah Yaqoob — proposed by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan — did not attach their CNICs, law degrees and experience certificates. Similarly, another PTI nominee, Babar Bilal, failed to provide his CNIC and law degree.

Syed Qamar Hussain Sabzwari, proposed by the PPP and IBC, did not submit his CNIC, academic certificates, reported judgements, three best pleadings and practising licence. Malik Tahir Mehmood, nominated by federal minister Rana Tanveer Hussain, did not mention his date of birth and citations for cases he had handled.

Sultan Mazhar Sher Khan, a nominee of Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, also failed to submit his CNIC, LLB degree and copies of best pleadings.

The JCP secretariat also found the forms of Nudrat Bayan Majeed and Adnan Haider Randhawa deficient, as they failed to submit their CNICs and law degrees. The secretariat also found that Ms Majeed did not provide the details of her reported judgement. Both were nominees of Justice Mansoor Ali Shah.

The CNICs of Usman Ghani Rashid Cheema and Raja Inam Ameen Minhas — the nominees of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) — were also not attached to their respective forms.

Subordinate judiciary judges found lacking Four subordinate judiciary judges also submitted incomplete applications. District and Sessions Judges Raja Jawad Abbas Hassan, Mohammad Azam Khan and Shahrukh Arjumand did not provide lists of cases decided in the past three years.

Judge Hassan’s application was also missing his CNIC. Additional District and Sessions Judge Humayun Dilawar failed to attach his CNIC and details of cases he had adjudicated in the last three years.

The secretariat has asked JCP members to “check their own nominees and remove the deficiencies by 9th January 2025 (close of working hours). This secretariat would not be in a position to get the late information verified by concerned quarters before a meeting of JCP”.

The JCP also decided not to disclose the names of proposers. If not removed, the case shall be placed before the JCP with these deficiencies.

Out of the 21 nominations submitted, the secretariat found only four applications in order. These included Kashif Ali Malik (nominated by Farooq H. Naek and PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan), Danyal Ijaz (nominated by PPP), Adnan Basharat (nominated by Roshan Khursheed Bharucha), and Qazi Adil Aziz (nominated by the IBC).

The JCP has scheduled a meeting on Jan 17 to deliberate on the nominations for the IHC and the Balochistan High Court (BHC).

A senior lawyer questioned whether allowing nominees to rectify these deficiencies amounts to relaxing the rules, citing Clause 3 of the JCP Rules, which states: “Nominations received after the prescribed time shall not be placed before the Commission for consideration.”

Gandapur relayed ‘house arrest deal’ to Imran: Aleema

Ikram Junaidi | Malik Asad

January 8, 2025

• PTI negotiators not satisfied after meeting party chief in jail, demand ‘unmonitored access’

• Barrister Gohar plays down need to submit demands in writing, asks govt to move forward

• PTI founder moves court against denial of basic facilities by jail admin

ISLAMABAD: Amid no headway in talks between the government and the opposition, the sister of PTI founder Imran Khan on Tuesday claimed that the former prime minister was offered a deal by the authorities regarding his transfer from Adiala jail in Rawalpindi to his residence in Banigala.

After a meeting with Imran Khan in jail, Aleema Khan told media persons outside the prison that her brother received several offers through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. She claimed that her brother was continuously getting such offers with a suggestion that he should remain silent, but asked how he could agree to house arrest after spending so much time in jail.

Last week, both the government and the PTI denied that any sort of offer was on the table to move the former prime minister from Adiala jail to Banigala or any other location.

‘Unmonitored access’

Meanwhile, the PTI’s negotiations with the government on two points — the release of prisoners and the formation of a judicial commission to probe anti-party crackdown — did not seem to head in a positive direction despite a meeting between Imran Khan and the PTI negotiators.

After talks commenced in the last week of December, the PTI demanded uninterrupted access to the party founder for his input in the dialogue. After much dilly-dallying, the PTI leaders were finally given access to Imran Khan on Tuesday. Following the meeting, the PTI leaders held a press conference in which they demanded an ‘unmonitored’ meeting with the party founder.

PTI leader Omar Ayub said that the negotiating team clearly demanded an unmonitored meeting with Imran Khan, but the government was not allowing it despite the fact that the government’s committee accepted it during the talks. He alleged that the PTI team could not discuss matters with the former premier due to the alleged spy gadgets installed in the meeting room.

During the presser, the party’s interim chairman Gohar Ali Khan suggested that tensions between the government and the opposition should be defused. He added the government should not make an issue out of the party’s failure to share its demands in writing.

Barrister Salman Akram Raja said the PTI had already shared its two demands — all political prisoners should be released and a judicial commission be formed over the May 9 and Nov 26 violence. He claimed it was a fact that the PTI was stopped from winning the 2024 elections and its victory was converted into a defeat. He said that it was strange that leaders of PTI were not allowed to meet Mr Khan in a free and unmonitored environment which had put a question mark on the government’s intentions.

Separately, PM’s adviser on law and justice, Barrister Aqeel Malik, told reporters in Taxila that the inconsistent attitude of the PTI could sink the negotiations process, as delaying tactics by the leadership of the opposition party could throw a wrench into the talks aimed at easing political tensions.

Imran moves court

Separately, former premier Imran Khan filed a petition in the court of Islamabad’s special judge central, saying that he was being denied basic rights guaranteed under the jail manual and other applicable laws.

In his petition filed through his counsel Advocate Faisal Hussain and Ali Ijaz Buttar, Mr Khan accused the jail authorities of subjecting him to inhumane treatment at the behest of the incumbent government.

The petitioner alleged politically motivated persecution, claiming the government was using illegal tactics to undermine his resolve and restrict his access to essential facilities.

The legal team highlighted several grievances, including the denial of weekly phone calls to his children residing in the United Kingdom, the refusal to allow visits from his personal doctor, and the lack of access to newspapers, reading material, and television.

The petition also alleged that the former premier was being kept in isolation and subjected to measures intended to cut him off from the outside world.

The petition further contended that the actions of the jail authorities were aimed at pressuring Imran Khan to abandon his political stance and commitment to democracy. The former prime minister also claimed he was being denied court-ordered permissions to contact his children and was barred from receiving visits from his family, lawyers, and political associates.

The legal team requested the court to direct jail authorities to allow weekly phone calls with his children, restore television access in his cell, permit his medical checkups by his personal doctor, and ensure compliance with jail manual provisions and prison rules.

In a related development, the Additional Sessions Court of Islamabad, presided over by Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka, adjourned the pre-arrest bail applications of Mr Khan and Bushra Bibi until January 28.

The cases pertain to charges linked to protests in the federal capital. During the hearing, Bushra Bibi’s legal team submitted an application seeking her exemption from personal attendance, which was accepted by the court.

The judge stated that all bail applications would be decided together and noted that partial arguments had been presented. However, the video presence of the PTI founder remained pending. The court confirmed that the next hearing, scheduled for January 28, will address all outstanding issues.

How Israeli law permitting child detention imperils the rights of Palestinian minors

NADIA AL-FAOUR

January 07, 2025

DUBAI: Frightened, alone, and often injured during arrest, Palestinian children routinely find themselves vulnerable to abuses and deprived of basic rights after they are taken into Israeli custody, according to human rights monitors.

Under legislation passed in November by the Knesset, Israeli authorities are now permitted to detain Palestinians under the age of 14 — a measure that rights groups claim is motivated by revenge rather than security needs.

The bill, proposed by a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party and approved by 53-33 votes, allows judges to sentence minors between the ages of 12 and 14 to prison terms if convicted of terrorist murder, manslaughter, or attempted murder.

According to the law, which was passed as a temporary measure lasting for five years, convicted minors can be held in closed facilities until they turn 14, after which they can be transferred to regular prisons.

An identical law, which was passed in 2016 following a series of attacks carried out by teenagers and other minors, expired in 2020.

According to the Palestinian Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, Israel imprisoned more than 460 children between the months of October 2023 and January 2024.

The Israeli parliament also passed a law in November that allows for the deportation of the family members of those convicted of attacks on Israeli citizens.

Furthermore, it allows for the deportation of the family members of those who had advance knowledge and either failed to report the matter to the police or “expressed support or identification with an act of terrorism.”

Relatives of those who published “praise, sympathy or encouragement for an act of terrorism or a terrorist organization” can also be deported.

“This is a historic and important day for all citizens of Israel,” Itamar Ben Gvir, Israel’s national security minister, said in a statement welcoming the bill, which he said “sends a clear message the State of Israel will not allow the families of the terrorists to continue enjoying life as if nothing had happened.

“From today onwards, every father, mother, child, brother, sister or spouse who identifies with and supports their family member who harmed the citizens of Israel will be deported.”

Both Israel’s Justice Ministry and the Attorney General’s Office raised concerns about the legislation, which stipulates that those being expelled would be sent to Gaza or other destinations for 7-15 years for citizens or 10-20 years for legal residents.

Some opposition members of the Knesset suggested at the time that the legislation is targeted specifically at Palestinian citizens of Israel, saying the law is unlikely to apply to Jewish Israelis convicted of terrorism offenses.

Israeli and Palestinian human rights organizations have branded both new laws unconstitutional.

Hadeel Abu Salih, an attorney working for Adalah, the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, sent a letter to the Israeli parliament claiming the legislation was motivated by revenge and retribution.

Abu Salih also said the legislation contradicts the principles of Israel’s Youth Law, which stresses rehabilitation over punitive measures for minors.

The Legal Center released a statement saying that “through these laws, Israel further entrenches its two-tiered legal system, with one set of laws for Jewish Israelis under criminal law and another, with inferior rights, for Palestinians under the pretext of counterterrorism.

“By embedding apartheid-like policies into the law, the Knesset further institutionalized systematic oppression, in contravention of both international law and basic human and constitutional rights.”

Since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on southern Israel that triggered the Gaza war, Israeli forces have significantly increased the rate of arrests of Palestinian children, both in Gaza and the West Bank.

Between October and November 2023 alone, 254 minors were reportedly arrested by Israeli forces. Some of these detainees have since been released.

The bulk of the arrest operations appear to take place in towns, camps, and other areas with points of contact with Israeli checkpoints. Although the precise charges leveled against these minors are unknown, the most common offense is throwing stones.

In some cases, rights monitors say children under the age of 10 are taken in order to pressure their relatives to surrender themselves to Israeli authorities.

Palestinian children released from Israeli detention often describe traumatic experiences, recounting harsh measures enforced by guards and the prison administration, including allegations of physical and psychological torture during interrogation.

Testimonies shared with Save the Children include severe beatings in the presence of their relatives, being shot at, having their legs restrained, and being blindfolded during transfers between detention centers.

Several claim that food and water were also withheld for long periods of time as a form of punishment. Some have even alleged sexual abuse. Monitors say minors are routinely denied their right to legal aid and at times the presence of a family member during their interrogations.

As a result of these abuses, minors are allegedly coerced into signing false confessions and into signing documents without understanding their content. Children are also rarely granted bail before standing trial.

The Palestinian Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners Society have expressed concern about the ongoing detention of children and the alleged abuses.

Both say the behavior of Israeli prison administrations and conditions inside overcrowded facilities have become worse since the Oct. 7, 2023, attack.

Monitors say the detention centers holding minors do not meet the minimum humanitarian standards. A large number of detained children are reportedly sharing cells and are deprived of an education, medical assistance, and personal items such as books and clothing.

Israeli courts have long defined the term “Palestinian child” as a person under the age of 16, rather than the internationally recognized age of 18 as defined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Israeli authorities have previously denied the maltreatment of detainees.

Responding to separate claims by the UN in March last year about the alleged mistreatment of adults captured in Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces told the BBC: “The mistreatment of detainees during their time in detention or whilst under interrogation violates IDF values and contravenes IDF and is therefore absolutely prohibited.”

Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur for Palestine, accused the international community of failing to address the detention of Palestinian children, saying minors in Israeli custody are “tormented often beyond the breaking point.”

On World Children’s Day, marked by the UN on Nov. 20, the Palestinian Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs released a statement saying that around 270 Palestinian children were being held in Israeli jails.

“The occupation continues to detain no less than 270 children, who are mainly held in Ofer and Megiddo prisons, in addition to camps established by the occupation army after the Gaza war,” the commission said.

“Systematic crimes are being committed by the prison administration against the jailed children, in addition to beatings, torture, and daily abuses.”

According to Palestinian rights monitors, more than 11,700 people from the West Bank have been detained since October 2023. This does not include those from the Gaza Strip, where the number of arrests is thought to be far higher.

Similarly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Palestinian Authority urged the international community on World Children’s Day to pressure Israel to honor its commitments to global treaties, especially the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

It stressed the need to ensure Palestinian children are not excluded from international charters that call for special protections for children against violence and detention.

The ministry also condemned the law undertaken by the Knesset to detain children under the age of 14 years, calling it a dangerous escalation that further undermines Palestinian children’s rights.

Despite international and local human rights organizations calling for the abolition of the Knesset’s child detention laws, the Israeli government insists the law will remain in place for the next five years.

Orthodox Christians mark a somber Christmas in Gaza

January 07, 2025

GAZA CITY: Orthodox Christians marked a somber Christmas on Tuesday in the war-torn Gaza Strip, with worshippers saying there would be no gifts for children and no joy during this year’s holiday.

In the richly decorated Church of Saint Porphyrius in the heart of Gaza City, as fighting raged across the Palestinian territory, around a dozen members of the Orthodox Christian community gathered for the annual morning service.

Sitting in the wooden pews, older men and women joined Archbishop Alexios of Tiberias in lighting candles and praying for friends and family and for an end to the now 15-month-old war.

Around 1,100 Christians from various denominations remain in Gaza amid the fighting, sparked by militant Palestinian group Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

“Holidays are limited to prayers only, with no gifts for children, no joy or any signs of joy for children on this holiday,” Ramez Al-Suri told AFP.

“We hope and ask all countries to help bring a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.”

“We have been at war for 15 months and we in the Christian community always ask for peace and all our prayers are for love and peace for all and for the war to end as soon as possible,”

he said.

In the courtyard of the church, which was partially destroyed in an Israeli airstrike in October 2023, the destruction that has devastated much of Gaza is

clear in the surrounding bombed-out buildings.

Standing outside the church, Fuad Ayyad said “we wake up every minute to bombing, massacres, genocide or the martyrdom of a citizen.”

In the 2023 strike that hit the church, 18 Palestinian Christians were killed, according to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-run territory.

“Today we welcome the holiday with joy, but a diminished joy as Christians,” Ayyad said, adding, “sadness remains present and dominant within the Western and Eastern churches and within the Palestinian community whether Muslim or Christian.”

On Dec. 25, when the Catholic and other churches celebrated Christmas, Pope Francis called in his annual address for “arms to be silenced” around the world and appealed for peace in the Middle East, Ukraine and Sudan.

He also denounced the “extremely grave” humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The Hamas attack of October 7, 2023, resulted in the deaths of 1,208 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official Israeli data.

Since then, Israel’s military offensive has killed 45,885 people in Gaza, a majority of them civilians, according to figures from the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry that the United Nations considers reliable.

Israeli forces kill 31 Palestinians in Gaza onslaught, 3 in West Bank

January 07, 2025

CAIRO, DOHA: The Health Ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said on Tuesday that 31 people were killed in the Palestinian territory in the past 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to 45,885 as the war entered its 16th month.

The ministry also said that at least 109,196 people had been wounded in the war between Israel and Hamas, triggered by the Palestinian group’s Oct, 7, 2023 attack.

Separately, Israeli forces killed at least three Palestinians in stepped-up operations across the occupied West Bank following the killing of three Israelis near a Jewish settlement. The Palestinian Health Ministry said an 18-year-old was killed overnight in an Israeli airstrike in Tamun, a town northeast of Nablus city, while a 40-year-old was shot dead in the nearby village of Taluza.

The Israeli military said that after a clash with militants in the Tamun area, its war planes struck and killed two fighters. The official Palestinian news agency WAFA also reported a second Palestinian killed in a strike in Tamun.

The Israeli military said a third militant was killed in a firefight in Taluza and several were arrested in various incidents. Hamas’s armed Al-Qassam Brigades confirmed the man killed in Taluza was one of its fighters.

WAFA meanwhile reported revenge attacks by Jewish settlers, who it said had set fire to a vehicle overnight and attacked a Palestinian village.

It said the Israeli military was setting up more checkpoints and road closures, and conducting increased incursions and raids.

Meanwhile, Israeli authorities renewed a closure order for Al Jazeera’s Ramallah office in the West Bank.

Israeli soldiers posted the extension order on the entrance of the building housing Al Jazeera’s offices in central Ramallah.

The extension applies from Dec. 22 and lasts 45 days. In September, Israeli forces raided the Ramallah office and issued an initial 45-day closure order.

Talks aimed at cementing a truce in Gaza are ongoing, with “technical meetings” taking place between the parties, mediator Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said.

“The technical meetings are still happening between both sides,” ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari said, referring to meetings with lower-level officials on the details of an agreement. “There are no principal meetings taking place at the moment.”

Mediators Qatar, Egypt and the US have been engaged in months of talks between Israel and Hamas that have failed to end the devastating conflict in Gaza.

Ansari said there were “a lot of issues that are being discussed” in the ongoing meetings, but refused to go into details “to protect the integrity of the negotiations.”

Hamas said at the end of last week that indirect negotiations in Doha had resumed, while Israel said it had authorized negotiators to continue the talks in the Qatari capital.

A previous round of mediation in December ended with both sides blaming the other for the impasse.

Settler herds storm al-Aqsa mosque

07 Jan 2025

Dozens of Zionist settler herds renewed on Tuesday their storming of the courtyards of al-Aqsa Mosque in the occupied city of al-Quds.

The Palestine Today News Agency quoted local sources as saying "Dozens of settlers stormed al-Aqsa mosque, in successive groups, from al-Maghariba Gate, and performed Talmudic rituals in its courtyards."

The same sources added "The occupation police intensified their presence at the gates of al-Aqsa Mosque and around the Old City, and obstructed the entry of worshipers into the mosque."

It is worth noting that since the beginning of the comprehensive Zionist aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, in October 2023, the enemy forces have tightened their measures at the gates of al-Aqsa Mosque and the entrances to the Old City.

UN calls for $370m in new humanitarian aid for Lebanon

January 08, 2025

UNITED NATIONS, United States: The United Nations joined the Lebanese government on Tuesday to appeal for an additional $371.4 million in humanitarian aid for people displaced by the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

The extension builds on an initial aid appeal for $426 million launched in October, as all-out war flared between the two sides and sent hundreds of thousands in Lebanon fleeing their homes.

That appeal raised approximately $250 million, according to the UN.

Following nearly a year of exchanges of cross-border fire initiated by Hezbollah over the war in Gaza, Israel in September stepped up its bombing campaign and later sent troops into Lebanon.

After two months of warring, in which Hezbollah’s influential chief Hassan Nasrallah and multiple other leaders were killed, a ceasefire deal was reached that went into effect in late November.

“While the cessation of hostilities offers hope, over 125,000 people remain displaced, and hundreds of thousands more face immense challenges rebuilding their lives,” Imran Riza, the UN humanitarian coordinator in Lebanon, said in a statement Tuesday.

The additional funding “is urgently required to sustain life-saving efforts and prevent further deterioration of an already dire situation,” he added.

The appeal is primarily aimed to assist an estimated one million Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian refugees affected by the conflict, funding a three-month period of emergency efforts through March 2025.

Since the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon began on November 27, more than 800,000 displaced people in Lebanon have been able to return home, according to UN figures.

Qatar and Turkiye dispatch two power ships to generate electricity for Syria

January 08, 2025

LONDON: Qatar and Turkiye sent two power-generating ships to Syria on Tuesday to help address the energy crisis in the country caused by insufficient electricity supplies.

Khaled Abu Di, the director of Syria’s Public Establishment for Transmission and Distribution of Electricity, said the floating power plants are capable of generating a total of 800 megawatts a day, which would increase the amount of electricity generated in the country by about 50 percent, state news agency SANA reported.

Syria’s energy infrastructure was badly damaged during more than a decade of civil war in the country that culminated in the fall of the ruling Assad regime in December. The deterioration resulted in severe power shortages, with many areas receiving electricity for only two or three hours a day.

Abu Di said efforts are underway to secure transmission lines to deliver the electricity generated by the ships. He added that his team is also working to repair dozens of damaged conversion plants and connection lines to get the national grid up and running again.

Al-Ahsa’sbishts are exquisitely tailored, rich cultural symbols

January 07, 2025

RIYADH: Al-Ahsa is known for its diverse industries and handicrafts, particularly the Hasawibishts, which are sought-after across the Arab world for their exquisite tailoring, quality and intricate embroidery.

The Hasawibisht is favored by dignitaries, officials and businesspeople for its aesthetics as well as the rich culture it represents, the Saudi Press Agency reported recently.

They come in dark or light fabrics depending on taste, the occasion and season.

These garments are often adorned with silk thread, as well as golden and silver zari embroidery in shades of yellow, reddish hues, and white, the SPA reported.

Handmade bishts continue to be in demand despite machine-made options.

Certain families in Al-Ahsa and elsewhere in the Kingdom are renowned for their expertise in crafting handmade and artisanal bishts, with meticulous attention to design, shape and embroidery.

Prices vary based on craftsmanship, fabric quality, and the type of zari used. Fabrics from Japan or Kashmir, along with German zari, are factors in determining cost.

Winter bishts, woven from camel hair, come in varying quality and are distinguished by their thickness and weight compared to those made for summer.

Bisht fabrics are woven in Saudi Arabia, Syria and Jordan, with China and India offering similar manufactured options, the SPA added.

The embellishment of the winter Hasawibisht initially had silk thread, and later incorporated golden and silver.

Stitching the karmuk, the wide section adorned with zari, can take 14 days by hand, while a machine can complete the task in two hours.

Boko Haram Attack On Borno Military Base: Soldiers Missing, Casualty Figures Rising

8 January 2025

By EnioluwaAdeniyi

Four days after Boko Haram insurgents overran a military base in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State, many soldiers remain unaccounted for, security sources have disclosed.

The attack, which occurred around 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Forward Operating Base in SabonGari, involved a large number of fighters who overwhelmed the military personnel stationed there.

Neither the military authorities in Maiduguri and Abuja nor the Borno State government have released an official statement regarding the incident.

However, sources within the military who spoke with Daily Trust confirmed that casualty figures have continued to climb as more bodies are recovered during ongoing search operations.

The source said, “More bodies are being recovered. Some died on their way to the hospital in Maiduguri, while many soldiers and vigilantes are unaccounted for, missing in action (MIA).

“It’s too early to tell how many people we have lost because we are still counting. I cannot tell you the exact number of soldiers and vigilantes or the identity of the officers killed, but we have recovered over 12 dead bodies so far.”

Another credible military source said, “The attack was on Forward Operations Base of 25TF Brigade located in SabonGari, Damboa LGA. The base is responsible for securing southern Damboa, especially curtailing the activities of Boko Haram/ISWAP from Yobe to Chibok and Gwoza axis.

“They were completely dislodged, and their equipment carted away and some damaged. A reinforcement from the main 25TF Brigade along with CJTF were sent from Damboa but were blocked by IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) planted by the terrorists.

“Therefore, many CJTF were injured and some killed in the ambush. However, by the time the reinforcement got to SabonGari, the Boko Haram fighters had abandoned the location, carting away equipment. So many soldiers missing (unaccounted) and others killed, details are still being confirmed.

“The FOB (Forward Operating Base) has strength of 110 soldiers but only about half have so far been accounted for.

“Two weeks ago, a neighbouring Base in Wajiroko was attacked by the ISWAP fighters using modified commercial drones for the first time in the over a decade long crises. This indicates sophistication and bigger plans.”

January 7, 2025

Chairman of the association in Kano State, retired Captain AbdullahiBakojiAdamu made this known in an interview with Daily Post on Tuesday.

“This killing has sent a wave of fear and apprehension into the hearts of the leaders of the association, who would now carry out their jobs with fears of how this will affect the protection of herders’ interests.”

He added, “The killing could lead to more violence through acts of revenge by relatives or supporters of the deceased.” He called on the authorities to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are apprehended and brought to justice to face the consequences of their actions.

As a security expert, Bakoji suggested increasing the number of security personnel and providing adequate equipment in areas facing security challenges in the country.

“Currently, even community leaders are not spared from the activities of armed criminals, which will further demoralize the masses and negatively impact the economy.” he lamented.

Felix Morka: It Is Disappointing That You Are Crying Wolf Instead Of Engaging In Mature Discourse – Alile Flays Peter Obi

8 January 2025

By Justina Otio

The National Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mary Alile, has condemned claims by the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi that his life is being threatened.

Recall that Obi had made the allegation after the APC spokesman, Felix Morka accused him of crossing the line in his New Year message to Nigerians.

However, taking sides with Morka, Alile described Obi’s claims as inflammatory and baseless.

She shared her reservation in a strongly worded statement signed personally by her on Tuesday.

She argued that APC and its leadership have always upheld the principles of democracy, free speech, and constructive criticism.

The women’s leader accused Obi of deliberately misrepresenting Morka’s remarks and wondered why he is quick to escalate political commentary into a fabricated security concern.

The statement reads in part: “As the APC National Women Leader, I stand firmly with Felix Morka, our National Publicity Secretary, whose statements have been unjustly twisted to suit Mr. Obi’s narrative of victimhood.

“Mr. Obi’s allegations that Morka threatened his life and family are baseless, inflammatory, and an attempt to distract Nigerians from his own political shortcomings.

“Felix Morka’s response to Obi’s New Year address was a straightforward and well-articulated rebuttal of the misleading and often divisive rhetoric that Obi continues to propagate. It is disappointing that instead of engaging in mature political discourse, Obi has chosen to cry wolf, fabricating threats where none exist.”

On why Obi’s claim holds no water, the Women Leader stated that Morka’s comments were public and clear, devoid of any language that could be interpreted as a threat.

“Nigerians deserve better than calculated attempts to undermine public officials for cheap political sympathy,” she said.

She added that the APC under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu remains steadfast in upholding the tenets of democracy, and that Morka’s remarks aligned with her party’s commitment to addressing misinformation and setting the record straight.

“Mr. Obi’s recent statements are a distraction from his inability to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s progress. Rather than address the glaring lack of structure and cohesion within his party, Obi chooses to deflect attention by targeting APC officials who diligently defend the truth.

“We urge Nigerians to remain focused on the nation’s developmental goals under the progressive leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The APC will not be deterred by opposition antics designed to derail our mission.

“Let it be clear that Felix Morka spoke on behalf of millions of Nigerians who are tired of baseless criticism and are ready to move forward under a government committed to action and results.

“I, Dr. Mrs. Mary IdeleAlile, unequivocally support Felix Morka and denounce the desperate attempts to silence voices of truth within our party,” she noted.

Nigeria Drops In Global Military Ranking, Now 39th Worldwide

8 January 2025

By EnioluwaAdeniyi

The Nigerian Armed Forces have dropped three places in the 2024 global military rankings, according to the latest report by Global Firepower.

The new ranking places Nigeria 39th out of 145 countries reviewed, marking a decline from its 36th position in 2023 and 35th in 2022.

This two-year consecutive slide comes despite significant investments in military hardware, including the acquisition of fighter jets and other combat enablers. The military has also reported successes in combating terrorist activities within the country over the same period.

The report also reveals that Nigeria has fallen from third to fourth position among African countries, reflecting a shift in regional military dynamics.

For the 18th consecutive year, the United States maintained its position as the top-ranked military globally.

According to GFP, the United States showcases “commanding values in many major material, financial, and resource categories.”

The USA is followed by Russia, China, and India, ranked second, third, and fourth, respectively.

South Korea is ranked fifth, followed by the United Kingdom (6th), Japan (7th), Turkey (8th), Pakistan (9th), and Italy (10th). The top 15 is completed by France (11th), Brazil (12th), Indonesia (13th), Iran (14th), and Egypt (15th).

Australia, Israel, Ukraine, Germany, and Spain hold the 16th to 20th positions, respectively.

In Africa, Egypt is ranked first, followed by Algeria, South Africa, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Angola, Morocco, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tunisia, and Sudan, in that order.

According to the report, over 60 factors were considered in determining the scores given to countries.

The GFP report stated, “The finalised Global Firepower ranking below utilises over 60 individual factors to determine a given nation’s PowerIndex (‘PwrIndx’) score, with categories ranging from the quantity of military units and financial standing to logistical capabilities and geography.

“Our unique, in-house formula allows smaller, more technologically advanced nations to compete with larger, less-developed powers. Special modifiers, in the form of bonuses and penalties, are applied to further refine the list, which is compiled annually.

“For 2024, Nigeria is ranked 39th out of the 145 countries considered for the annual GFP review. The nation holds a PwrIndx score of 0.5619 (a score of 0.0000 is considered ‘perfect’). This entry was last reviewed on 01/09/2024.

“PwrIndx: Each nation is assessed on individual and collective values processed through an in-house formula to generate its ‘PwrIndx’ (Power Index) score. Some values are estimated when official numbers are unavailable.”

Ivorian authorities decide ship carrying ammonium nitrate is safe

7 January 2025

Ivorian authorities have made their decision. The ship Zimrida, which has long been blocked outside Ivorian waters, is not a floating bomb. On Tuesday, it finally docked at the port of Abidjan, carrying 20,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate.

Authorities have stated that this cargo, which is used for fertilizers and the mining industry, poses no danger to port facilities or the general public. Everything is in order, including the permits. This morning, a press visit was organized on board to further reassure journalists.

“The port of Abidjan, in particular, is booming in terms of traffic, and ammonium nitrate traffic is part of this growing phenomenon. In the past, ammonium nitrate was mainly used in the agriculture industry, but in recent years there has been an expansion of the mining industry,'' HienYacoubaSié, General Manager of the Autonomous Port of Abidjan, stated.

''Every day, new mines are discovered, some of them world-class. These mines consume large quantities of ammonium nitrate. To give you some figures: in 2023, the port of Abidjan handled 20,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate. In 2024, this figure had risen to 46,375 tonnes,” he added.

But the arrival of ammonium nitrate is not without its critics. Ammonium nitrate is still associated with tragedies such as the explosion in the port of Beirut in 2020. Of the 20,000 tonnes transported by the Zimrida, some 7,656 tonnes are destined for an Ivorian customer.

Who are you to question the faith of others, outgoing Chief Justice asks naysayers and critics over anti-Islam label

By Kenneth Tee

08 Jan 2025

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 8 — Vilified by naysayers and critics for being anti-Islam, Chief Justice TunTengkuMaimun Tuan Mat today responded by asking the former whether they have been ordained the standing to question the faith of others.

During her final speech as the outgoing Chief Justice at the Opening of the Legal Year 2025, TengkuMaimun said she has been criticised, vilified and labelled un-Islamic or an enemy of Islam, including having her spouse unfairly used against her in attempts to force her recusal.

Yet, she said she remained steadfast in her belief, stating that none of these attempts have passed or ever will pass the test of her conscience.

TengkuMaimun also highlighted several landmark decisions on the scope of powers of the federal and state legislature, as she acknowledged that some parties have spun those decisions to appear as if the Judiciary or some judges within it, including herself, were anti-Islam.

“Some even questioned my faith as a Muslim. It is not for me to question the faith of others because in the first place I will never know, until the Day of Reckoning, whether Allah SWT has accepted my own (worship and deeds).

“And so, I will not bring myself to stoop down to the level of these scurrilous attacks.

“I stand firmly by what I do as a judge and Chief Justice and I will continue to believe in what is right.

“The spin doctors, naysayers and critics can say what they will and turn something noble into a purported vilification of Islam,” she said.

‘No sincerity’: Umno’s Puad accuses PAS, Bersatu of pretence in Najib support

By Malay Mail

08 Jan 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 — Datuk Seri PuadZarkashi has today slammed PAS and PartiPribumi Bersatu Malaysia for allegedly being hypocritical in their support for Datuk Seri Najib Razak by hosting a rally on Monday.

The Umno Supreme Council member pointed to how both presidents of the two parties had not only been absent during the rally but had kept quiet about the matter.

“If Muhyiddin had principles, he should have opposed PAS holding the gathering. Besides being unable to control PAS, he was likely embarrassed to attend,” he posted on Facebook, referring to Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“This is why PAS and Bersatu are in disarray, trying to manipulate the issue of the royal addendum. There is no sincerity.

In a separate post, Puad also pointed to how few members of the two parties turned up despite promising tens of thousands attending.

“The reason is that PAS members know their leaders are putting on a show. PAS has no agenda to defend Najib. In fact, PAS often uses Najib’s case to tarnish Umno’s image,” he said.

“Therefore, they didn’t attend, not because they were upholding the Yang di-PertuanAgong’s decree. This time, they were not solid in following PAS leaders’ instructions because their support for Najib is merely pretence.”

He had compared it to Umno members, who were steadfast with the party’s stance to back Najib.

The Court of Appeal had allowed Najib’s appeal against the dismissal of his bid to compel the Malaysian government to produce a purported “supplementary order” from the previous Yang di-Pertuan Agong that would see him serve the remainder of his jail sentence under “house arrest”.

The majority ruling also allowed Najib to adduce additional evidence to support his claim of the existence of such an addendum.

The ruling means that Najib is allowed to have the merits of his judicial review of a purported addendum issued by the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah — which permits him to serve the remainder of his six-year prison sentence under house arrest — heard by the High Court.

Finance Ministry, state govt unveil JS-SEZ incentive package to attract high-value investments into Johor

08 Jan 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 — The Ministry of Finance (MoF) and the Johor state government have announced an incentive package for the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) designed to drive high-value investments into Johor.

In a joint statement today, the MoF and Johor state government said that effective on Jan 1, 2025, investors in the JS-SEZ will be eligible for a suite of incentives, including a special corporate tax rate, flagship development focus and a special tax rate for knowledge workers.

“Companies undertaking new investment in qualifying manufacturing and services activities, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing supply chain, medical devices, aerospace manufacturing and global services hub, will benefit from a special tax rate of five per cent for up to 15 years,” the statement said.

Other incentives include additional tailor-made incentives allocated to businesses operating in certain flagship areas in JS-SEZ and a special tax rate of 15 per cent for 10 years for eligible knowledge workers working in the special economic zone.

Johor MenteriBesar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the incentive package for the JS-SEZ provides the much-needed stimulus to elevate Johor’s standing on the global investment map.

“The Madani and the Johor state governments have worked collaboratively to provide the JS-SEZ a shot in the arm to drive investments.

“With the multitude of advantages that this state possesses, the JS-SEZ will solidify Johor’s position as a major trade and maritime hub in the region,” he said.

In addition to the tax incentive package, Onn Hafiz said the Johor state government had agreed to introduce lower entertainment duties starting from Jan 1, 2025.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the JS-SEZ tax incentive package reflects the government’s commitment to engender a mutually beneficial relationship that will catapult Malaysia into a premier investment destination in the region.

He added that the government welcomes global businesses to explore Malaysia’s vast opportunities.

“Building on the cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore, the incentive package for JS-SEZ will accelerate drawing in quality investments in key sectors and promote the creation of higher-income jobs, leveraging on the respective strengths and synergies between Johor and Singapore,” he said.

The joint statement said the JS-SEZ tax incentive package complements the New Investment Incentive Framework (NIIF) announced in Budget 2025 by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, which aims to propel investments in high-growth, high-value and sustainable industries to stimulate equitable economic development across Malaysia.

“To facilitate an expedient and more convenient investment application process in JS-SEZ, the government has set up the Invest Malaysia Facilitation Centre Johor (IMFC-J) to coordinate the end-to-end investment-related process, which includes applications and approvals, investment facilitation, and reinvestment.

“Further details on the tax incentives and the flagship zones will be announced in due course,” the statement added. — Bernama
