Identity display of businesses on Kanwar yatra route: Audacity of the UP police is more worrying than the order itself

by Shah Alam Khan

July 28, 2024

There is an economic aspect to such orders as well. Eateries, restaurants, roadside vendors, hotels, etc make good money through the Kanwar yatra period. (Express file photo)

------------

In an order on July 17, the Muzaffarnagar Police asked owners of restaurants, shops, street-side eateries and food vendors on the Kanwar yatra route to display their names along their businesses. Senior police officials of the district have explained the order as a precautionary measure during the ongoing Kanwar yatra in the state. The order was subsequently been extended to the districts of Saharanpur and Shamli and similar orders were passed in Uttarakhand (Haridwar) and Madhya Pradesh (Ujjain). On July 22, the Supreme Court stayed the enforcement of all such directions, and noted that there was no government order empowering the police to give directions in this case.

The police’s directions should be seen in a context: Many businesses along the Kanwar yatra route in UP are owned by Muslims. A large number of Muslims also work in these eateries and restaurants. There is, then, bigotry ingrained in such a direction.

Modern democracies work on the trinity of justice, fraternity and liberty. In the last 10 years in India, this trinity has been bruised on several occasions. The police orders in question is just one such. The whataboutery around the action, particularly by those defending this is equally baffling. It needs closer examination from a broader social perspective.

To display one’s identity (forcing this violates the right to privacy) – whether in business or otherwise – depending on the person’s social context, is a double-edged sword. It can, on the one hand, put him/her in danger of loss of life, property or business. Or, it can propel a person on the ladder of success. It is no secret that a privileged caste identity, wealthy attire and good spoken English can most doors in India. Imagine the opposite. With a surge in religious intolerance in the last decade, the display of religious identity can be dangerous, particularly for citizens from minority communities.

The audacity of the UP police order in a secular republic is more worrying than the order itself. If the state can allow its administrative machinery to violate the fundamental rights of a section of its citizenry, it can do so on a much broader scale in the future. Asking members of a particular community to publicly identify themselves has a disturbing history.

There is an economic aspect to such orders as well. Eateries, restaurants, roadside vendors, hotels, etc make good money through the Kanwar yatra period. Forcing the vendors and owners to disclose their identity appears to be an attempt to undermine some businesses while propping up others. In a country reeling under unemployment, such moves are shameful at many levels.

People defending the order, especially on social media, have invoked the bogey of the “halal meat ecosystem”. The argument is that if meat sold in the market can be marked as “halal”, then why should a direction demanding the display of owners’ and vendors’ identities be seen as discriminatory? The poor logic of this argument rests on the fact that halal meat is exclusively consumed and marketed by Muslims. That isn’t so.

The sale and supply of halal meat are determined by market forces not only in India but across the world. It follows a simple supply-demand equilibrium. With 200 million Muslims in the country, the market for halal meat is bound to attract everyone. Most big halal-meat businesses in India are owned by non-Muslims. The UP police order is thus not comparable to the so-called “halal meat ecosystem”.

To the casual observer, it may well seem that the order(s) in question is an attempt to promote a divisive agenda in the wake of the ruling party’s setback in UP in the general elections. There is an echo of otherness in the orders that can lead to the fraying of the social fabric of the Republic. What is certain is that such discriminatory measures should violate our sense of public morality.

Fortunately, India’s Constitution enshrines a wide and deep notion of the right to life and personal liberty, something the Supreme Court has recognised in the past and hopefully, will do so in this case as well. History has also shown that interfering too deeply in the lives of citizens is a political and governmental strategy that has short-lived gains. The democratic citizens of this country have an uncanny ability to restrict regimes that overstep their authority.

Palestinian Boxer Wears Shirt Depicting Bombed Children In Gaza At Paris Olympics

Jul 28, 2024

"This shirt represents the children who are martyred and die under the rubble," said Palestinian boxer Waseem Abu Sal. Abu Sal, who is the first Palestinian boxer to ever compete at the Olympics, made a statement during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics by wearing a shirt depicting children being bombed.

The embroidered images on his white shirt showed warplanes dropping missiles over children playing sports. Abu Sal explained that the shirt represents the current situation in Palestine, where children are being killed and left alone without basic necessities. "This shirt represents the current picture in Palestine," news agency AFP quoted Waseem Abu as saying.

"The children who are martyred and die under the rubble, children whose parents are martyred and are left alone without food or water."Abu Sal was one of two flag-bearers for the Palestinian delegation during the rain-soaked river parade along the Seine on Friday.

Athletes of Team Palestine wave flags on the athletes' parade team boat along the River Seine during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

According to figures from the Hamas-run health ministry, at least 39,258 people, primarily women and children, have lost their lives in Gaza since the start of Israel's military campaign, which was launched in response to an attack by Hamas militants on October 7.

Jibril Rajoub, president of the Palestine Olympic Committee, said that they had consulted with the local organizing committee of the Paris Olympics to ensure that Abu Sal's shirt did not violate Olympic regulations. "It's a message of peace. It's a message to attract attention," he said. "This is anti-war, against killing. This abides with the Olympic Charter." "We presented it, they approved it," he added.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has strict rules regarding political statements during sports events and opening and closing ceremonies. However, athletes are allowed to express themselves freely in press conferences and on social media. The Palestine Olympic Committee had previously written to the IOC requesting a ban on Israeli athletes at the Paris Olympics, which was rejected.

Rajoub called on IOC president Thomas Bach to take action and impose sanctions against those who violate the Olympic Charter. He criticized the double standard policies and argued that failing to sanction Israel is part of Europe's legacy and their crimes, referring to the Holocaust during World War II.

Abu Sal, a 20-year-old boxer who received a wildcard for the Olympics, lives in the West Bank and faces challenges in training with his Cairo-based coach, a Gazan who is unable to travel to him due to Israeli restrictions.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 — Muslims are advised to avoid seeking advice and placing hope in bomoh (medicine man), as it may affect their faith.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk MohdNa’im Mokhtar said Muslims should place all their hopes and dependence on Allah SWT.

“We aim to create a Madani society where Muslims place all their hopes and dependence on Allah SWT, without needing intermediaries for seeking help. Allah is the only one to turn to in times of hardship.

“Avoid seeking advice and placing hope in bomoh, as it can lead to issues of faith and may cause one to fall into acts of syirik (polytheism),” he said after launching the Program Santuni Madani: Mini KarnivalKampungAngkat Madani at Sultan Sulaiman Club, KampungBaru here today.

MohdNa’im was commenting on the issue of bomoh allegedly being the cause of a bullying case that led to the death of a UniversitiPertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) student, Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain, seven years ago.

Muslim residents of Mewat fear gaurakshaks even more following their call to apply for gun licenses

July 27, 2024

ALISHA DUTTA

In the Mewat region, traversing the Mumbai-Delhi highway, Muslim residents have feared reaching the villages dotting the border of Haryana and Rajasthan. Their fears, however, rose manifold after local gaurakshaks or ‘cow vigilante’ leaders gave a call to their associates to apply for gun licences.

The call to apply for gun licences in bulk appeared on multiple WhatsApp groups of cow vigilantes across the region after Daya Ram, a resident of Mewat’sBisaru village, was allegedly attacked by cattle smugglers in the night.

The Muslim community has allegedly lost several young and middle-aged men to attacks by gaurakshaks in the region, spiking fears. In Rajasthan’s Ghatmeeka village that borders Haryana, Mohammed Ali, 27, and along with this two brothers, has quit dairy farming altogether. “Since Junaid and Nasir’s death last year, we have quit our family business of dairy farming and we started working as drivers,” he said sombrely.

While many in several villages of Mewat appear to have followed Mr. Ali’s footsteps by moving to other professions, some have continued to navigate risky paths in dairy farming.

Md. Abdul (name changed to maintain anonymity), a resident of of Nuh, said that in his village and several other villages, the part of their homes that housed cattle now has only buffaloes. “Earlier, we used to keep both buffaloes and cow for dairy farming, but now, who will risk bringing a cow from anywhere?” Mr. Abdul said.

The 57-year-old man and his two sons had briefly stopped cattle rearing after the lynching in 2017 of Pehlu Khan, who was transporting cows to Nuh from Alwar district. A resident of the same village, Mr. Abdul felt more afraid for his sons, since they would go to animal fairs in Rajasthan to legally buy cows and buffaloes for their dairy farming business.

“For months, I did not allow my two sons to go to the fair to make purchases, and made ends meet with great difficulty by practising the trade in and around our village. However, as our means dried up, we started to buy buffaloes from neighbouring villages and continued our trade,” Mr. Abdul said.

This was expensive, he said. “If a buffalo costs close to ₹90,000 in Rajasthan’s pashumela (cattle fair), it costs close to ₹1.5 lacs when brought from Haryana,” Mr. Abdul said.

While, cow vigilantes allegedly frequent the Delhi-Mumbai highway and various routes from Rajasthan to Haryana to harass Muslim men, some residents of Mewat have found a different route to protect themselves and their trade even when they are not carrying cattle.

Hamid Khan, a resident of Nuh, said that while the gaurakshaks were after Muslim men, they had no qualms in letting Hindu men pass with vehicles full of cattle, which had allowed many like him to buy cattle.

“The Hindu men selling animals in pashumelas in Rajasthan were incurring great losses with the increased attacks of gaurakshaks on Muslim men, so they proposed that we pay an additional cost for them to deliver the cows and buffaloes to our villages, straight from the fairs,” Mr. Khan said.

For the 32-year-old and many like him, paying an additional cost of up to ₹5,000 to Hindu men to transport cattle legally purchased from cattle fairs in Rajasthan’s Nangar helps them continue their trade while trying to protect themselves.

Standing next to Mr. Khan, his brother Parvez Khan asked why the cow vigilantes armed with firearms and sticks did not run after their Hindu brethren when the latter transported cattle, and lynched innocent Muslims even when they did not.

Will seal border in terror-hit Jammu 'inch by inch': DGP

Jul 28, 2024

NEW DELHI: The international border along J&K's Jammu division, which in recent months has turned into a hub of terrorist activity perpetrated by foreign terrorists who have set up bases in the mountains after crossing over from Pakistan/PoK, will be "sealed inch-by-inch", J&K DGP R R Swain has told TOI.

He added, J&K Police have identified the stretches vulnerable to infiltration, including areas prone to the laying of cross-border underground tunnels, and are strategically stepping up their presence there.

Speaking exclusively to TOI, Swain, who will be visiting the border villages of Jammu in the days ahead to assess and plug the policing gaps as well as build a connect with the locals, shared that arms, equipment and training of village defence groups (VDGs) in the region are being upgraded to semi-automatic weapons from the outdated .303 rifles and night vision devices procured for their use. VDGs, who act as first responders to terrorist attacks in their village, have been reconstituted to comprise younger men who are being trained at the nearest facilities of Army, central forces or the J&K Police, he added.

"The enemy has a distinct advantage of cost of engagement in terms of having to deploy just five terrorists to terrorise and unsettle 500 persons. The intent of the enemy is not in our control... Those across the border have openly declared that Jammu will be activated (as the new terror flashpoint)... I would rather concentrate on arranging and strategising things on my side as per my resources, be it law, people, legal power, hard power or soft power," said the DGP.

Stating that the Army is back to stationing its men in Jammu's mountain tops after a gap of 12 years, he said the idea is to engage the terrorists in the heights while also retaining the surprise element. "Obviously there will be losses as we fight terrorists who are here to kill or die. However, we must derive comfort from the fact that the terrorists' focus shifted to Jammu following the defeat in Kashmir. Besides, we have ensured zero terror recruitment from Jammu over the past 2.5 years. The information flow is there but we could not convert the information into immediate action due to the difficult terrain. It will take time as

In the counterfire from the Indian side, a Pakistani intruder was killed.

This attack raises the military toll in terrorist violence in J&K to 12 this month. Earlier fatalities included Naik (Gunner) Dilwar Khan near the LoC in Kupwara on July 24 and Lance Naik Subhash Chander in Poonch district on July 23. On July 15, a Captain and three soldiers from 10 Rashtriya Rifles died in Doda district, and five soldiers from 22 Garhwal Rifles were killed in an ambush on a two-truck patrol in Kathua district on July 8.

BAT, composed of Pakistani military personnel and terrorists, frequently provides cover fire for intruders attempting to cross the heavily guarded LoC, according to official sources.

In the latest assault, two to three Pakistani personnel exploited poor weather and low visibility to cross the LoC and attack the Army post with grenades and gunfire from close range. The ensuing gunfight lasted for hours, critically wounding two soldiers, one of whom later died at a military hospital in Srinagar. The second wounded soldier is reported to be in

Pakistan extends registration cards for Afghanistan refugees amid rising deportations

Navya Singh

JULY 27, 2024

The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation of Afghanistan announced on Thursday the extension of Proof of Registration (PoR) cards for Afghan refugees in Pakistan for another year. This decision, communicated by the Office of Afghan Immigrant Affairs in Islamabad, extends the validity of PoR cards from June 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025.

Despite assurances that documented refugees will not be targeted, many PoR cardholders report experiencing harassment and the fear of deportation. The PoR card is a critical identity document for Afghan refugees, granting them legal status in Pakistan. Its extension offers some respite, allowing refugees continued access to essential services such as healthcare, education and banking facilities.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi welcomed the extension, emphasizing the need for sustainable solutions and support for both Afghan refugees and their host communities. During his recent visit to Pakistan, Grandi called for a reset of the aid model, advocating for new partnerships and innovative approaches to address displacement concerns. He stated, “We need to seize this opportunity to accelerate solutions, and have a bigger, broader vision for the Afghan people in Pakistan.”

West Bengal: BSF foils infiltration bid along Indo-Bangladesh border in Nadia

By: Sheenu Sharma

July 28, 2024

The Border Security Force (BSF) has foiled an infiltration attempt along the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB) in West Bengal's Nadia district. AK Arya, DIG and spokesperson, BSF, South Bengal Frontier, said that the incident took place on Saturday (July 27) at around 2.40 am under the jurisdiction of the Ranghat Border Outpost.

"A jawan of the 68 Bn BSF spotted activity across the Kodalia river that forms a natural boundary between the two countries. About 8-10 Bangladeshis were entering India through a banana plantation. When the jawan challenged them and ordered them to retreat, they rushed forward in a bid to attack him with sharp-edged weapons. The jawan first hurled a stun grenade but this wasn't enough to deter the group. He then fired two rounds at them. The intruders then fled back towards Bangladesh, taking advantage of the darkness and the dense foliage," the DIG said.

"BSF jawans were also targeted by Bangladeshi criminals at several outposts in the North 24-Parganas, Murshidabad and Malda districts. At some locations, jawans have had to use stun grenades and pump action guns," Arya added.

Govt renews talks offer to PTI amidst tensions

Kalbe Ali

July 28, 2024

ISLAMABAD: Three days after a key minister in Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s cabinet declared that the government had decided, in principle, to place a ban on the PTI, another minister on Saturday renewed talks offer to the opposition party to reduce political tensions and resolve economic issues being faced by the country.

Speaking at a presser, Federal Minister for Petroleum Dr Musadik Malik advised the PTI to come and sit together to help the government bring the country out of the current difficult situation but in the same breath he dubbed the PTI leadership “anti-state” allegedly for orchestrating the May 9 violent incidents.

The petroleum minister’s renewed offer for talks, however, met with a strong rebuke as PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan accused the minister of having “double standards”, stating that on one hand, the police and the law enforcement agencies were targeting and arresting the opposition members and on the other hand, the government was offering them dialogue.

Talking to Geo News on July 23, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar had stated that the government had decided, in principle, to place a ban on the PTI, but was waiting for a broader consensus among ruling allies to impose the ban.

‘Outsiders’ outnumber local workers at Jamaat-i-Islami Liaquat Bagh sit-in

Aamir Yasin

July 28, 2024

RAWALPINDI: A significant number of participants present at the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) sit-in at Liaquat Bagh have come from central and southern districts of Punjab and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and many of them have vowed to resist the increase in power tariffs and heavy taxes imposed by the government in the federal budget.

As the protest entered its second day, Murree Road remained closed to traffic from Marrir Chowk to Committee Chowk, with containers placed on the artery that passes through the heart of the garrison city. As a result, business activities in the area were affected.

About 3,000 people, mostly workers, were present at the protest site in the morning, with the JI leadership conspicuous by its absence. Though the party had installed tents in the park for the protesters, the participants chose to occupy the road to register their protest.

Speaking to Dawn, Mohammad Anwar, a resident of Okara, said he had come to Rawalpindi to protest inflation which was unbearable for the masses. According to Mr Anwar, the JI supporters are divided into smaller groups of five to seven people and most of them have brought a few pairs of clothes. He, however, said they did not need sleeping bags because of the hot and humid weather.

By DanlamiNmodu

July 27, 2024077

President Bola Tinubu has allayed fears of manipulation by any interest group in the ongoing economic reforms, saying his campaign was self-sponsored, without strings, or indebtedness to any individual or institution.

According to a statement signed by AjuriNgelale, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), Tinubu, who received a delegation of Islamic leaders led by Sheikh Bala Lau, at the State House on Thursday, said his victory at the polls was purely by divine intervention, careful planning, and diligence in getting support from Nigerians.

“I have no cabal. I have no sponsors. The money I spent on the elections was my personal fortune. At some point, the odds were against me; banks were locked. But Allah, the Almighty God, said I will be the President. Mine is to now follow the leading and teaching of the Almighty God.

“What should be uppermost in our minds is the future of our children. We have a lot to teach them on what it takes to be a good citizen and what it takes to be a responsible citizen,’’ the President stated.

Miami imam's sermon sparks debate over school vouchers and the First Amendment

By Margie Menzel

July 27, 2024

But whether the state can take action and what that action might be are unclear

A Jewish lawmaker is calling for Governor Ron DeSantis’ Administration to take action against a Muslim school that receives taxpayer-funded vouchers. Republican Representative Randy Fine is incensed by the school leader’s inflammatory remarks against Jewish people -- and by the state’s apparent lack of action since those remarks came to light.

When Fine, who is Jewish, heard about Kablawi’s remarks a few weeks later, he wrote to Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz. Fine says the imam’s mosque also owns and operates the Reviver Academy at the same location. The school receives more than $500,000 in state scholarships to help cover the tuition of 74 students. Fine thinks the state ought to be reviewing that relationship, but months later he says he hasn’t seen any results. Fine says that lack of action makes it feel as if the DeSantis administration is condoning the imam’s remarks.

“When you stand up and say, ‘Jews are the brothers of apes and pigs’ and the DeSantis administration says, ‘Where can we send the check?’ I don’t know how else you can interpret that,” Fine said.

Mosque plan creating ‘parking nightmare’ leaving locals feeling trapped in their own homes

By Daniel Coles

Jul 27 2024

The new mosque would be built in Dartmouth Street, West Bromwich, under plans revealed by the Bangladeshi Muslim Welfare Association earlier this year.

Only 16 parking spaces would be provided for more than 450 worshippers with narrow Dartmouth Street, Brook Street and Duke Street mostly covered in double yellow lines and with very few on-street spaces.

A number of residents in Brook Street said they supported the new mosque but were very concerned by so few parking spaces. One resident, who is a doctor, said she had missed appointments because of cars blocking her home because she “physically couldn’t get off the drive.”

Another objector, who lived with her 70-year-old husband with mobility issues in Brook Street, said the amount of cars illegally parking was “absolutely horrendous and a nightmare.”

Britain is 'broke and broken', newly-elected Labour govt claims

Jul 28, 2024

Britain's government has declared the country "broke and broken" ahead of an evaluation of public finances on Monday, which the newly-elected Labour Party will use to blame a 20 billion pound ($26 billion) shortfall to their predecessors. Labour, which won in a landslide victory on July 4, claims that the situation in many areas of public policy is worse than expected.

Finance minister Rachel Reeves is set to present the results of a fiscal review to parliament, accusing the Conservative Party, which governed for the past 14 years, of making unfunded spending commitments to gain public favor.

According to a statement from Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office, “The assessment will show that Britain is broke and broken - revealing the mess that populist politics has made of the economy and public services.” The statement adds, "It will show that the previous government made significant funding commitments for this financial year without knowing where the money would come from."

The Conservative Party has dismissed Labour’s claims of a financial 'black hole' as a pretext for tax increases that were not disclosed during the election campaign. Some economists also expressed skepticism, arguing that Labour should have anticipated most issues before taking office.

'World first': Juice spacecraft to flyby by Earth and Moon, then slingshot to Jupiter

Jul 28, 2024

The European Space Agency's Juice probe, launched in April 2023, is set to perform a groundbreaking manoeuvre next month as it journeys through the Solar System to Jupiter. The spacecraft, currently 10 million kilometres from Earth, will utilise the gravity of both the Moon and Earth to conserve fuel on its eight-year voyage to investigate the potential for extra-terrestrial life on Jupiter's icy moons: Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa.

Preparations for this complex manoeuvre have begun at the ESA's space operations centre in Darmstadt, Germany. Juice is expected to reach Jupiter's system in July 2031, taking a longer route than Nasa's Europa Clipper spacecraft, which is scheduled to launch this October and arrive a year earlier.

The decision to take the scenic route is partly due to the limitations of the Ariane 5 rocket used to launch Juice, which was not powerful enough for a direct shot to Jupiter, approximately 800 million kilometres away.
