By Poulomi Ghosh
Oct 07, 2023
After Hamas attacked Israel on Saturday, Indian social
media space was abuzz with the debate of Indian Muslims supporting Palestine.
Amid social media debate over the support of Indian
Muslims to Palestine in the fresh escalation of the Israel-Palestine conflict
on Saturday, Muslim IAS officer Shah Faesal said humanity is above religion and
as terrorism did not help anyone ever, it won't help Palestine either.
"Indian Muslims have never supported the escalation of violence in Middle
East. The horrifying visuals of innocent Israelis killed by Hamas today break
everyone's heart. terrorism has not helped anyone and it won't help
Palestinians also," the celebrated bureaucrat posted on X. His opinion was
in connection with a post which said Indian Muslims stand unequivocally with
Palestine as they are protecting their homeland from 'Israeli monsters'. Read |
‘We stand ready’: Joe Biden's support for Israel amid attack and a warning
India condemned the terrorist attack in Israel which
caught the country by surprise as Hamas terrorists fired thousands of rockets
killing at least 70 people and injuring hundreds. The unprecedented attack
triggered retaliation from the Israeli side and Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu declared war in which Israel's enemies will have to pay a very heavy
price. India being Israel's strategic partner condemned the attack as PM Modi
said India stands in solidarity with Israel at this difficult hour. The United
States, the UK too condemned the terrorist attack. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Iran
appeared to back Hamas in the conflict. Pakistan and Afghanistan too showed
support to Palestine and called for cessation of hostilities.
Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in a threat told the
fellow Arab countries that Israel cannot provide them with any protection as
Hamas now intends to expand the battle in Gaza to West Bank and Jerusalem.
Palestine foreign affairs ministry in its statement
defended the Hamas attack and said it repeatedly warned against the
"consequences of blocking the political horizon". "Israel's
disavowal of the signed agreements and failure to adhere to international
legitimacy resolutions led to the destruction of the peace process," it
said.

Israel’s 26/11 Moment: Islamic Jihad Group Joins
Palestinian Hamas Terrorists, Infiltrates South Israel

OCTOBER 07, 2023
Terrorists from terror group Islamic Jihad joined
Hamas terrorists in attacking Israel on Saturday after the latter declared war
on Israel for arresting protesting Palestinians in Al-Aqsa mosque and the
Israel-Gaza Strip border earlier this year.
According to a report by news agency Haaretz said that
terrorists from the Islamic Jihad have joined the attack carried out by Hamas
on Israel. Together, they have kidnapped dozens of Israeli citizens.
“We warned the enemy not to continue his aggression
against the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The age of the enemy’s aggression without a
response is over. I call on Palestinians everywhere in the West Bank and within
the Green Line to launch an attack without restraint. Go to all the streets. I
call on Muslims everywhere to launch an attack,” Mohammed Deif, the head of
Hamas’ military wing, issued a statement.
In a multi pronged attack, Hamas militants first fired
around 5,000 missiles towards Israel from Gaza Strip, with some missiles
penetrating Israel’s air defence system the Iron Dome and striking civilian
areas. It led to the death of at least 22 people and injured over 300,
according to Israeli news agencies.
The attacks are reminiscent of the 26/11 Mumbai
attacks when a total of 166 people, including six Americans, were killed when
10 Pakistani terrorists laid a more than 60-hour siege in the financial capital
of India.
Terrorists from Hamas and Islamic Jihad have also
captured several areas in southern Israel and many armed infiltrants are
joining those who have already entered Israel, taking over police stations and
other parts of towns bordering the Gaza Strip.
Israel has imposed a crippling blockade on Gaza since
2007 after the Hamas militant group took power. Palestinian militants and
Israel have fought several devastating wars since.
Hamas has released several images and videos of its
forces taking Israeli citizens and IDF soldiers hostage. “The Hamas terrorist
organisation made a grave mistake this morning and launched a war against the
State of Israel. IDF troops are fighting against the enemy at every location. I
call on all of Israel’s citizens to follow security instructions. The State of
Israel will win this war,” Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant said.
According to Israeli news agencies, Benjamin Netanyahu
will reportedly order an Official Declaration of War against Hamas and the
other Palestinian groups who are assisting in today’s attack on Israel.
The attack follows a period of heightened tensions in
September when Israel closed the border to workers from Gaza for a fortnight.
This led to heavy protests in the heavily-militarised border.
In 2023, at least 247 Palestinians, 32 Israelis and
two foreigners were killed in the conflict, including combatants and civilians
on both sides, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials, a report by AFP
said.
The vast majority of fatalities have occurred in the
West Bank, which has been annexed by Israel since the 1967 Arab-Israeli
conflict. There has been a rise in army raids, Palestinian attacks targeting
Israelis and Israeli settler violence against Palestinians and their property.
Several far-right Israeli ministers live in settlements in the West Bank, which
are deemed illegal under international law.

A mosque in Cairo that is a seat of Sunni learning has
expressed its solidarity with Palestinians in the wake of an attack by the
militant group Hamas that took Israel by surprise.
The Al-Azhar al-Sharif mosque houses the Sunni world’s
foremost seat of religious learning. A statement by the mosque said it “stands
fast with full support to the free people of Palestine, who have come to revive
our self-confidence, lifeline, and a long-lost sense of aliveness,” the
statement read.
The statement also criticized the global approach to
the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying that the international community
“adopts nothing but double standards when it comes to the Palestinian cause.”
The statement was issued in the wake of a surprise
attack by Hamas on Israel on Saturday. At least 200 Israelis were killed and a
number were also taken hostage. An equal number of Palestinians died amid
Israel’s military response to the attack.

Muslims, Christians Protest Supreme Court's LGBTQ+
Association Rights Ruling In Nairobi, Kenya

Photo: AP News.com
-----
07 Oct 2023
Hundreds of Muslims gathered outside the Supreme Court
in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi to protest its recent decision to uphold the right
of association for the LGBTQ community. The protesters claimed that the verdict
endorsed immorality and called for the resignation of certain justices. Some
conservative Christians also joined the demonstration.
The court’s ruling affirmed a previous judgment that
the Non-Governmental Organization Board had discriminated against LGBTQ
individuals by refusing to register their association. Two judges dissented,
arguing that same-sex relationships are illegal according to Kenyan laws.
Lawmaker Mohamed Ali emphasized that Kenya is a
religious country and urged the court to respect the beliefs of Islam and
Christianity, both of which oppose homosexuality. Ali said:
Islam and Christianity are against gayism. Our
country’s constitution doesn’t recognize same-sex marriages. Three people in a
court should not go against the societal values.
While President William Ruto stated his respect for
the court’s decision, he highlighted that Kenyan culture and religion do not
accept same-sex relationships. The LGBTQ community in Kenya frequently faces
discrimination and abuse. Uganda, Kenya’s neighbour, has enacted a severe
anti-LGBTQ law, including the death penalty for certain cases. Similarly, a
Kenyan lawmaker has put forth a similar harsh law, currently under review, in
the national assembly.
Same-sex relationships are not allowed in many African
countries due to laws and cultural beliefs. Homosexuality is often
criminalized, causing people to hide their true identities and face social
rejection. Some countries have legal protections, but overall, there is a lack
of acceptance and equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community in Africa. Activists
and organisations are working to change discriminatory laws and promote
inclusivity and respect for all individuals, regardless of their sexual
orientation or gender identity.

Ottawa Police Step Up Patrols At Synagogues, Mosques
After Attack On Israel

Blair Crawford
Oct 07, 2023
Ottawa police say they’ve stepped up patrols around
synagogues and mosques in the city after Saturday’s rocket attack and invasion
of Israel by Hamas that left hundreds dead.
Today’s attack on Israel has an impact on our own
community in Ottawa,” police said in statement on the social-media platform X,
formerly known as Twitter. “We have increased police presence in areas of
religious significance including synagogues and mosques. We are also reaching
out to community partners to ensure they know we are here to support them. Hate
crimes will not be tolerated and will be fully investigated.”
The surprise attack began early Saturday with a
barrage of rockets into southern Israel, followed by an invasion of Hamas
fighters from the Gaza Strip. They reportedly roamed through Israeli towns
shooting civilians and soldiers alike, taking many of them hostage.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also condemned the Hamas
actions. In a social- message, Trudeau said: “Canada strongly condemns the
current terrorist attacks against Israel. These acts of violence are completely
unacceptable. We stand with Israel and fully support its right to defend
itself. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this. Civilian life must be
protected.”
Conservative leader and Carleton MP Pierre Poilievre
condemned the invasion by “Hamas terrorists and the sadistic violence they have
subsequently carried out against innocent civilians.”
Ottawa South Liberal MPP John Fraser used X to call
the attacks on Israeli citizens “abhorrent” and expressed sympathy for those
affected “by this heinous act, both in Israel and here at home.”
Nepean Conservative MPP Lisa MacLeod reposted images
on X from Israeli Defence Forces, while Ottawa Centre NDP MPP Joel Harden
posted that he was saddened to see “horrifying images of war in the Holy Land
today, in Israel and Palestine” and would work to “solve problems with words,
not bombs.”

Territorial Army inducts first batch of
Mandarin-trained officers along LAC
Oct 8, 2023
NEW DELHI: The Territorial Army (TA) has inducted its
first batch of Mandarin-trained officers and posted them to forward areas along
the LAC in support of the regular Army's drive to enhance expertise in the
Chinese language, Tibetology and the like amid the continuing military
confrontation in eastern Ladakh.
"Five Chinese language interpreters were inducted
into the TA in August after an extensive selection process on the basis of
Mandarin proficiency and officer-like-qualities. They are now posted in forward
areas to help in border personnel meetings with the People's Liberation Army
(PLA)," a source said on Saturday.
This move by the TA, which is based on a citizen
soldiers' army concept and supports the regular armed forces, adds to the
several measures being taken by the regular Army to address "capability
voids" in Mandarin proficiency, Tibetology and "advanced sector
specialisations" on China, as was earlier reported by TOI.

Indian Navy rolls out '360-degree appraisal' to
improve promotion evaluation
Oct 8, 2023
NEW DELHI: All officers being considered for promotion
in the Navy will now undergo a peer review by their colleagues as well as
subordinates in a new "transformative 360-degree appraisal mechanism"
being institutionalised in the maritime force.
The Navy on Saturday said the existing appraisal
mechanism of periodic confidential reports by senior officers has an inherent
limitation of a "top-down" approach because it does not cater for or
quantify a leader's impact on his subordinates. "The new appraisal
mechanism is aimed to address this shortfall by encompassing large-scale
surveys from suitably identified peers and subordinates for every officer being
considered for promotion," Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal said.
The survey includes a spectrum of questions,
encompassing aspects such as professional knowledge, leadership attributes,
suitability in war or crisis situations and the potential for higher ranks.

Muslim NGOs call on OIC to issue solidarity note for
freedom fighters of Palestine
08 Oct 2023
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 — Four Muslim non-governmental
organisations (NGOs) have called upon the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation
(OIC) to convene an emergency meeting to issue a solidarity note to the freedom
fighters of Palestine.
Rendering their full support to the Operation Al-Aqsa
Flood launched by Hamas with fighters of Al Qassam, Islamic Jihad, Al-Quds and
the Jenin battalion against Israel, the NGOs stressed that Israel atrocities
against Palestinians should be responded to by all Muslims and Muslim leaders
worldwide.
“This operation is a courageous retaliation to turn
around the status quo that has seen Israel as more victorious in many
confrontations. Israel has inflicted horrific suffering on the Palestinians,
both Muslims and Christians, in the occupied land for more than seven decades.
“And yet the resistance movement has gathered more
strength to persevere,” the NGOs said in a joint statement today, while also
calling on Christians to join forces to free Al Aqsa and all the holy sites.

Iran’s support for Hamas fans suspicion it’s wrecking
Israel-Saudi deal
BY JAMIE DETTMER
OCTOBER 7, 2023
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s top
military adviser said Tehran supported the attacks by Hamas against Israel on
Saturday and would continue to back the Islamist fighters “until the liberation
of Palestine and Jerusalem.”
The remarks by Yahya Rahim Safavi, a former commander
of the country’s Revolutionary Guards, will only fan suspicion that Tehran
played a direct role in supporting its traditional ally, Hamas, in the
well-planned attacks that have killed at least 40 people and injured more than
700.
Interventions by Rahim Safavi and other senior Iranian
policymakers will also be seen by Iran’s long-running regional rival Saudi
Arabia as a threatening signal that Tehran is willing to stir up regional
conflict to prevent Riyadh from normalizing ties with Israel, as the U.S.
wants.
“We support the commendable ‘Al-Aqsa Storm’
operations,” Rahim Safavi was quoted as saying by state media in Iran, using
Hamas’ name for Saturday’s rocket attacks and incursions.

Hamas violently forces detour from Saudi-Israel momentum
Oct 8, 2023
WASHINGTON: With its surprise attack against Israel,
Hamas has violently shifted the world's eyes back to the Palestinians and dealt
a severe blow to momentum to secure a landmark US-brokered deal between Israel
and Saudi Arabia.
The Iranian-backed Islamist militants who run the
impoverished, blockaded Gaza Strip on Saturday fired thousands of rockets and
infiltrated forces into Israel, 50 years after Arab states' assault on Israel
during the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was at
war. Just weeks earlier he had brushed aside the Palestinian issue during a
speech at the United Nations and said normalization in 2020 with three other
Arab nations in the so-called Abraham Accords had "heralded a new age of
peace."
President Joe Biden, eager before next year's US
election for a major diplomatic win, has pushed for a deal, and more talks were
expected in coming weeks -- despite skepticism from some of Biden's fellow
Democrats about the proposed security guarantees to the conservative kingdom,
whose rights record has long been under scrutiny.

Israel’s Security Cabinet Orders IDF To Destroy Hamas

BY LENNOX KALIFUNGWA ZENGER
OCTOBER 08, 2023
Israel's Security Cabinet early on Sunday morning made
a series of decisions marking the start of the offensive phase of
"Operation Swords of Iron," ordering the Israel Defense Forces to
prepare for the "destruction of the military and governing capabilities of
Hamas and [Palestinian] Islamic Jihad." "We are embarking on a long
and difficult war that was forced on us by a murderous Hamas attack," said
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. "We will restore security to the
citizens of Israel and we will win," he vowed. "The first stage is
ending at this time with the destruction of the vast majority of the enemy
forces that infiltrated our territory. At the same time, we have begun the
offensive phase, which will continue with neither limitations nor respite until
the objectives are achieved," he added. Israeli soldiers head south near

Israel-Hamas clash raises questions about regional
security alignment and Iran’s influence
October 08, 2023
DUBAI/GAZA/WASHINGTON When Islamist group Hamas
launched a spectacular attack against Israel, it also took aim at efforts to
forge new regional security alignments that could threaten Palestinian
aspirations for statehood and the ambitions of the group's main backer Iran.
Saturday's assault, the biggest incursion into Israel
in decades, coincides with U.S.-backed moves to push Saudi Arabia towards
normalising ties with Israel in return for a defence deal between Washington
and Riyadh, a move that would slam the brakes on the kingdom's recent
rapprochement with Tehran.
Palestinian officials and a regional source said the
gunmen who stormed Israeli towns, killing 250 Israelis and taking hostages,
were also delivering a message that the Palestinians could not be ignored if
Israel wanted security and that any Saudi deal would scupper the detente with
Iran.
"All the agreements of normalisation that you
(Arab states) signed with (Israel) will not end this conflict," Ismail
Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas which runs Gaza, said on Al Jazeera television.

Hamas attack on Israel is a ‘major strategic mistake’
for the Palestinian cause, expert says. Will it escalate to war with Iran?
by Cynthia McCormick Hibbert
October 7, 2023
An unprecedented surprise Hamas attack on Israel early
Saturday during a major Jewish holiday might appear operationally successful,
but “it will be a major strategic mistake for these Palestinian groups,” says
Northeastern University professor Max Abrahms.
“Israel’s reprisal will be fierce, and it will be
extremely damaging for the Palestinian cause,” says Abrahms, an associate
professor of political science who is an expert on the Middle East,
international security and terrorism.
Reports as of midafternoon Saturday said 200 Israelis
had been killed and 1,100 injured after Hamas militants fired thousands of
rockets and sent dozens of fighters into Israeli towns near the Gaza Strip,
taking hostages along the way.
“We’ve never seen an attack of this level of
sophistication involving thousands of rockets,” not to mention militant
infiltration by boat and paragliders, Abrahms says.

Young Saudi recalls how he struggled to overcome
stuttering
DHAI AL-MUTAIRI
October 08, 2023
RIYADH: Saad Al-Munajem recalls his early memory of
stuttering as a first-grader — of reading in front of his classmates and the
entire class bursting out laughing.
Al-Munajem struggled for years to conceal his
stuttering, feeling guilty and attempting to find a way out. He looked into
various coping mechanisms and workarounds in an effort to fit in with a culture
that values clear speech.
“I am 23-years-old, and (for) 19 years of my life, I
hated showing that I stutter. When I am stuttering I feel stuck, the words
can’t come out. I hated this whole situation,” Al-Munajem said.
Feeling the pressure to speak clearly creates a
vicious cycle, he explained: “I pressure myself harder to get out of the
situation, but the pressure makes the (stuttering) last longer … it is like a
whirlpool of negative emotions.”

Saudi FM rejects targeting of civilians in Gaza
violence
ARAB NEWS
October 08, 2023
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal
bin Farhan on Saturday said that the Kingdom rejected the targeting of unarmed
civilians “in any way,” according to a foreign ministry statement.
His comments came during separate phone calls with US
Secretary of State Antony Blinken and EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell to
discuss violence in Gaza, which broke out on Saturday morning.
The Palestinian Hamas group launched the biggest
attack on Israel in years and the assault followed months of surging violence
in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with fatalities in the occupied West Bank
hitting a scale not seen in years.
The early morning Hamas offensive by air, land and sea
was met by Israeli air strikes on the blockaded coastal enclave, in the
bloodiest escalation with the Palestinians since May 2021.

How Saudi-hosted MENA Climate Week aims to generate
regional momentum for climate change mitigation
NIRMAL NARAYANAN
October 07, 2023
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia is hosting Middle East and North
Africa Climate Week (October 8-12), a conference that brings together experts
and policymakers from the climate field and provides the Kingdom an opportunity
to highlight its energy transition efforts.
Widely touted as one of the most significant events
taking place ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference, or COP28, this November
in Dubai, MENA Climate Week will allow officials, activists and scientists to
discuss ways to mitigate the effects of global warming.
The Riyadh-hosted event, held in collaboration with
the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, will also offer Saudi Arabia a
chance to show how it is leading the region’s green transition with programs
like the Saudi Green Initiative and the adoption of renewables.
The UNFCCC is tasked with supporting the global
response to the threat of climate change. The week will take place in

How $6 billion in Ukraine aid collapsed in a
government funding bill despite big support in Congress
Oct 8, 2023
WASHINGTON: The collapse of Ukraine aid in Congress
was months in the making, and exactly what Senate Republican leader Mitch
McConnell had feared.
McConnell had warned that political support for
Ukraine was in danger as a small but vocal contingent of fellow Republican
lawmakers intensified their efforts against sending US money overseas for the
fight against Russia.
First in a series of high-profile speeches this summer
then in direct overtures to the White House, the Republican leader who had
visited Kyiv and put a priority on US support for Ukraine tried to steer the
hard-right flank of his party.
But in the end, neither McConnell nor the White House
nor Democrats in Congress could muscle a scaled-back $6 billion military and
civilian aid package for Ukraine to passage in last week's deal to avoid a US
government shutdown.

US House's Scalise, Jordan locked in two-way speaker
race, for now
Oct 8, 2023
WASHINGTON: Steve Scalise, the No. 2 Republican in the
US House of Representatives, and Jim Jordan, a leader of the party's
conservative wing, are in a two-way race to lead the chamber after the historic
ouster of Kevin McCarthy, but neither has the election sewn up.
Scalise, a lawmaker from Louisiana, has taken the more
traditional route to the top by raising money and building relationships across
the party, while Jordan has made his mark as a right-wing firebrand.
Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican
presidential nomination, endorsed Jordan for House speaker on Friday. But it
remains to be seen how much weight that will carry. Some Republicans ignored
Trump's calls for unity during McCarthy's drawn-out battle for the speaker's
gavel in January.
Republicans are due to choose their leader in a
closed-door meeting on Wednesday, though it may take a while for them to settle
on a candidate. Kevin Hern, the head of the conservative Republican Study
Committee, is also expected to run, and other candidates could still surface.
Representative Patrick McHenry currently holds the position on a temporary
basis.

UN agencies call on Pakistan to protect Afghan
refugees
7 October 2023
Amid a “severe humanitarian crisis”, Afghanistan
currently faces several human rights challenges, particularly for women and
girls, according to the UN.
Pakistan’s new plans would have “serious implications”
for all who have been forced to leave the country and may face serious
protection risks upon their return, the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, and the
International Organization for Migration (IOM) said in a joint statement.
“The forced repatriation of Afghan nationals has the
potential to result in severe human rights violations, including the separation
of families and deportation of minors,” the UN agencies warned.

Peace has not stopped Afghanistan’s depopulation
Hujjatullah Zia
7 Oct 2023
This summer, I visited my village in Jaghori district
in Ghazni province for the first time since 2017. I had never been so at ease
while travelling from Kabul to my birthplace.
Just a few years ago, undertaking this 260km trip
meant risking one’s life. In 2009, for example, on my way to the village with
some relatives, our car got caught in the crossfire of a battle between Afghan
forces and the Taliban. We narrowly survived.
When I arrived, I was struck by how much my village
had changed. I hardly recognised the place. It looked almost deserted. My
relatives and friends had all left. The house I grew up in was occupied by
strangers – internally displaced people from another province. The streets were
empty; I saw just a few lonely children roaming around.
The village of my childhood looked completely
different. It was full of people and full of life, with crowds of children
running in the streets and playing. Our favourite place was the local stream,
which was surrounded by greenery and attracted all kinds of birds and small
animals.
