Citing ‘love jihad’, Gujarat moves to change marriage registration law, make parental consent compulsory

Ritu Sharma

Feb 21, 2026

Calling it a matter of “public importance”, Sanghavi said the government was “not against love marriages” but was proposing the amendment for “protecting dignity of girls and sanatan dharma”.

---------

Stating that “under the name of love jihad, a game is being played in the state” and “a strong armour… needs to be created for young girls”, the Gujarat government Friday proposed amendments to the Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act, 2006, including a provision that makes consent of parents compulsory for registration of a marriage.

Tabling the proposal in the state Assembly under Assembly Rule 44, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi cited cases from the Panchmahal district where “there was not a single Muslim or mosque yet hundreds of nikaah certificates were issued” and from the districts of Banaskantha, Navsari and Mehsana.

‘Matter of public importance’

Calling it a matter of “public importance”, Sanghavi said the government was “not against love marriages” but was proposing the amendment for “protecting dignity of girls and sanatan dharma”.

Consent of parents in the marriage registration process is proposed to be made mandatory and they will be officially informed via a WhatsApp message after a marriage registration application is submitted. “The parents of the bride and groom will be informed within ten working days of the confirmation of the Assistant Registrar and the same will be communicated electronically or physically (through the means prescribed by the government) as may be practicable,” the proposal stated.

30 days to send in suggestions

The government announced a 30-day period for public suggestions and recommendations on the proposed changes. A committee will be constituted to review the suggestions and recommendations before the law is amended and a dedicated portal will be created for registration of marriages. Under the proposed regulation, the registration of a marriage will take at least 30 days.

In December 2025, former members of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) had submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to make parental consent compulsory for registration of a marriage.

“Over the past three months, Minister of State for Law and Justice Kaushik Vekariya has held around 30 meetings with various social organisations before arriving at these reforms. Several suggestions have been received during these meetings. Under the name of love jihad, a game is being played in the state. If any Salim changes his identity and becomes Suresh to trap innocent girls, he will be taught a lesson for life,” Sanghavi said.

He later told mediapersons, “If someone deceives a daughter of the state by hiding his identity, this government will ensure such strict action that he will not dare to look at any daughter with ill-intent in the future. Today’s time demands a strong armour that needs to be created for young girls… The government does not oppose love marriages, but it will certainly take strict action against fraud and coercion. This government is the protector of every daughter’s dignity and of our sanatan tradition,” he added.

Proposed registration system

* The marriage registration application must be submitted with the signatures of both parties and two witnesses. The application must be legally notarised and must be accompanied by proof of identity of both parties, issued by the Central government or the state government such as driving licence, passport, photo identity card.

* Every marriage registration application will be submitted by the government to the Assistant Registrar of the respective jurisdiction and this application will have to be submitted along with the details and documents of the bride and groom including Aadhaar cards, birth certificates or school leaving certificates, wedding invitation, two passport size photographs, a wedding photograph, photographs of witnesses and a declaration whether the bride and groom have informed their parents about the marriage. Similar documents of parents on both sides will be required.

* Parents of the bride and groom will be informed within 10 working days of the confirmation/satisfaction of the Assistant Registrar and this will be communicated electronically or physically (through the means prescribed by the government) as may be practicable.

* The Assistant Registrar, on receipt of an application, will forward it to the Registrar of the district/taluka concerned. The marriage will be registered 30 days after the Registrar is satisfied that the requirements specified in sub-rules (1 to 7) have been met.

* The Registrar will upload all details on an online portal to be created by the government. After the procedure is completed, the Registrar will prepare a marriage registration certificate as per Form-2 and this certificate will be delivered to the parties personally or by post.

New Study Estimates Over 75,000 Killed in First 15 Months of Gaza War

By Fidel Rahmati

February 21, 2026

A new study published in the UK-based journal The Lancet Global Health estimates that more than 75,000 Palestinians were killed in the first 15 months of Israel’s assault on Gaza.

The figure is significantly higher than the roughly 49,000 deaths reported at the time by Gaza health authorities, highlighting a sharp discrepancy in casualty estimates.

Researchers found that women, children and the elderly accounted for more than 52 percent of violent deaths during the period, broadly aligning with data released by the Gaza Ministry of Health.

The authors said their work represents the first independent mortality survey in Gaza, based on interviews with 2,000 Palestinian households.

Casualty figures in Gaza have been heavily contested. Gaza health officials, whose data the United Nations has consistently described as credible report more than 72,000 deaths, with thousands believed to remain buried under rubble.

Israel has questioned the figures, citing Hamas control over Gaza’s health ministry, although a senior Israeli military officer told local media last month that the overall numbers were broadly accurate.

Lancet researchers said their analysis refutes claims of systematic exaggeration and suggests the health ministry may have undercounted deaths by about 40 percent in the war’s first nine months.

In addition to the estimated 75,000 violent deaths, the study identified more than 16,000 non-violent deaths in the same period, linked to disease, pre-existing conditions and indirect war-related causes.

The findings intensify scrutiny over the human toll of the Gaza war, underscoring the scale of civilian suffering and the ongoing debate over casualty reporting.

Ministers, officials, scholars, and students also attended the event that is a part of the MWL’s work in Africa and across the globe, according to a press release.

In his opening remarks, Al-Issa highlighted the MWL’s efforts to propagate the message of the Qur’an through such projects. He added that the organization wants to protect Muslims from falling prey to extremist organizations.

He said the MWL focuses on both memorization and education, and that all its activities are coordinated with and directly supervised by the governments in the countries in which it operates.

“We are pleased to invite everyone to observe the outcomes of these Qur’anic institutes and centers and benefit from this distinguished model in Qur’an memorization, teaching, and student development,” he said.

Jewish leader: Azerbaijan has no history of antisemitism over two millennia

20 February 2026

William Daroff, chief executive of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, said Azerbaijan offers a model for cooperation between Muslim-majority nations and Israel, citing what he described as 2,000 years of uninterrupted Jewish life without antisemitism.

Speaking to Arutz Sheva – Israel National News following a recent visit to Baku, Daroff said Jews have lived in Azerbaijan for more than two millennia “with literally no acts of antisemitism”, calling the country’s record “amazing”.

He credited Azerbaijan’s leadership with cultivating close ties both with the Jewish community and with Israel, pointing to strong political and defence cooperation. Daroff described relations between President Ilham Aliyev and, previously, his father, Heydar Aliyev, and Israel as “remarkable”.

He also underlined Azerbaijan’s strategic position, noting that it borders both Iran and Russia. The country, which is predominantly Shia Muslim, is active in regional and international Islamic institutions — a factor Daroff suggested could allow it to play a leading role in encouraging broader Muslim engagement with Israel.

Daroff was speaking during the Conference’s annual meeting in Jerusalem, where participants met Israeli leaders across the political spectrum, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, opposition leader Yair Lapid, Benny Gantz and former prime minister Naftali Bennett.

Beyond political discussions, Daroff highlighted meetings with families of hostages and those killed in the war with Hamas, describing the experience as a stark reminder of Israel’s ongoing security challenges.

While welcoming the return of some hostages, he warned that uncertainty persists, including concerns over potential Iranian missile threats and the future demilitarisation and governance of Gaza. He also noted that US President Donald Trump remains an unpredictable factor in the regional equation.

Reflecting on the aftermath of the October 7 attacks, Daroff said the shock was deeply felt within the American Jewish community, strengthening ties between Israel and the diaspora.

“At the end of the day,” he said, “it is the Jewish people who will stand strong for the Jewish people.”

The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations Welcomes Guilty Plea for Threats to Muslim, Black Communities

February 20, 2026

The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today welcomed a guilty plea by a man who made threats on social media targeting Black and Muslim communities.

Raymond Pumphrey, 46, of Aberdeen, Md., also threatened to kill politicians and members of their families. He is scheduled for sentencing on June 29 and faces a maximum of five years in prison.

In a statement, CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry said:

“This guilty plea sends a clear message that threats of violence targeting minority communities will not be tolerated. Hate-fueled rhetoric and online threats have real-world consequences, instilling fear and trauma in families and undermining the safety of our neighborhoods.

We commend law enforcement authorities and prosecutors for taking these threats seriously and pursuing accountability. At a time when communities across our state are experiencing rising incidents of bias and intimidation, it is critical that our justice system respond swiftly and decisively.”

“We must continue working together to address the root causes of hate, strengthen protections against bias-motivated crimes and ensure that every Marylander can live free from fear.”

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.

Armed group killS 33 in fresh simultaneous attacks in Nigeria

February 21, 2026

At least 33 people have been killed after Islamic militants launched simultaneous attacks on a district in northwest Nigeria, according to the police.

The attack took place on Wednesday in the Biu community of Kebbi state, police spokesman Bashir Usman said in a statement late Thursday night.

The assailants crossed from Sokoto state, parts of which are occupied by the Lakurawa insurgent group, Usman said.

“Preliminary investigations confirm that armed Lakurawa militants entered the area to rustle cattle,” he said, adding that security personnel have been deployed to restore calm and maintain order.

The Lakurawa group operates in parts of northwestern Nigeria, particularly around communities in the northwestern state of Sokoto. The armed group is known to engage in cattle rustling, raids on villages and kidnappings for ransom.

Northern Nigeria is in the grip of a complex security crisis featuring both Islamic militants and armed criminal gangs kidnapping people for ransom.

The West African nation is in security cooperation with the U.S. after initial diplomatic tensions. Earlier this week, the Nigerian military announced the arrival of 100 U.S troops in Nigeria to help train its military in its fight against armed groups.

The Sultan of Pahang, Malaysia: Make mosques centres of unity, not exclusive domains

21 Feb 2026

Sultan of Pahang calls for mosques to be vibrant community hubs, warning against exclusivity and urging transparent management for unity.

KUANTAN: The Sultan of Pahang has called on Muslims to make mosques vibrant centres of community life and not the exclusive domain of any single group.

Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah said a mosque is the heart of the ummah, not merely an architectural landmark.

He urged the community to enliven mosques with consistent prayers, knowledge-sharing, and charitable activities.

“Let us not allow the mosque to stand magnificent in appearance, yet empty of spiritual substance and the warmth of fellowship,” he said.

His Royal Highness cautioned that allowing mosques to become exclusive could alienate sections of the community.

He made these remarks in conjunction with the opening of the Kampung Teluk Gading Mosque in Rompin.

The Sultan emphasised the need for management conducted with trust, transparency and integrity.

“Ensure mosque management is carried out with trust, transparency and integrity, so that it truly serves as a pillar of wellbeing, unity and harmony for the entire ummah,” he added.

Lashkar terror threat: Security heightened near key religious, heritage sites in Delhi

21 Feb 2026

NEW DELHI: Security was tightened across key religious and heritage sites in Delhi on Saturday, including areas around the Red Fort and parts of Chandni Chowk, following intelligence inputs suggesting a possible terror threat, an official said.

Security agencies issued an alert on a possible explosion threat near Red Fort, a major tourist destination and high-security zone, after Central intelligence agencies indicated that Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) has allegedly kept prominent religious places in India on its target list.

Sources said specific inputs suggested that a temple in the Chandni Chowk area could be among the potential targets.

While the intelligence inputs are being verified and assessed, security has been stepped up in and around sensitive religious places and crowded public areas, they added.

Intelligence agencies indicated that LeT could be attempting to carry out an Improvised Explosive Device (IED)-based attack. The alleged plan is reportedly linked to attempts by the terror group to avenge the February 6 blast at a mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan, sources said.

Central agencies and Delhi Police units are maintaining close coordination, and surveillance has been intensified through CCTV monitoring, vehicle checks and deployment of additional personnel at vulnerable points.

Bomb disposal squads, dog squads and quick reaction teams have also been placed on standby at strategic locations, they added.

The alert comes in the backdrop of the deadly car explosion near the historic Red Fort on November 10, 2025, which killed at least 13 people and injured more than 20 others.

The blast occurred when a car loaded with explosives detonated near Gate No 1 of the Red Fort metro station, igniting multiple vehicles nearby and causing panic in the densely populated area.

Security agencies have urged people to remain vigilant and immediately inform police or emergency services about any suspicious objects or activity. However, officials said there is no cause for panic and that the measures are precautionary in nature.

Further intelligence gathering and verification of inputs are underway, an official said.

21 Feb 2026

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday extended greetings to people on International Mother Language Day, asserting that all languages are equally worthy of respect and must be protected from any form of "attack".

Paying tributes to those killed during language movements, Banerjee said her government honours linguistic diversity and has accorded official recognition to several languages.

She said Bengali is not only a language of great literary heritage but part of a broader commitment to respecting all linguistic communities.

Banerjee said the state has set up language academies for several linguistic groups.

Members of Sindhi community serve Iftar at Chennai’s Wallajah Big Mosque

February 21, 2026

Continuing a four-decade-long tradition, members of the Sindhi community from the Sufidar Temple in Chennai served Iftar, the fast-breaking meal, to persons at the historic Wallajah Big Mosque during the month of Ramadan.

According to the Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, for the past 40 years, more than 100 members of the Sindhi community from the Sufidar Temple have upheld this tradition. On all 30 days of Ramadan every year, they voluntarily organise and personally serve Iftar to nearly 1,000 persons each evening at the mosque. The members come forward to prepare and serve the meals, “embodying the true spirit of service, generosity and shared humanity”.

The mosque, which was built by Nawab of the Carnatic, Muhammad Ali Wallajah, ancestor of the Prince of Arcot, has stood as a symbol of heritage, faith and cultural harmony, for more than 200 years.

In a message, he said that in a world often marked by division, this enduring tradition stands as a shining example of communal harmony between Hindus and Muslims. It is a living reminder that unity is not merely spoken about, but practised through compassion, respect and collective goodwill. This cherished four-decade legacy is not just an act of charity; it is a celebration of India’s pluralistic spirit, he added.

Omar defies party & rivals to back Ramadan charity control order

Feb 20, 2026

SRINAGAR/JAMMU: J&K CM Omar Abdullah on Friday defended an order by local authorities in Jammu’s Kishtwar regulating collection of zakat (charity) during Ramadan amid widespread criticism of the move, including by some of his cabinet colleagues and ally Congress.

Speaking in the assembly, Omar urged legislators “not to politicise every issue” and clarified that the Feb 18 order was issued by the Kishtwar deputy commissioner (DC) after consulting religious leaders as a safety measure to check donation deceptions. “We shouldn’t mix religion with politics. Some matters require dialogue and understanding at the local level rather than political confrontation,” Omar said.

The DC’s order says the aim is to check “unregulated and unauthorised collection of donations by individuals” in Ramadan. It warns against collection of donations by “unregistered” individuals or institutions without permission from Wakf Board or sub-divisional magistrates.

Omar referred to a House debate on Thursday when Congress MLAs Nizamuddin Bhat and GA Mir had raised the issue and denounced the order as an interference in religious affairs. “I looked into the matter and found that the DC did not issue the order on his own,” Omar said.

According to Omar, many had raised concerns about the misuse of charitable collections at a meeting ahead of Ramadan with religious leaders in Kishtwar. “They told the DC that genuine charitable organisations suffer losses as donors are misled by fraudulent groups. The DC issued the order on the advice of these religious leaders,” Omar said, adding the move had been welcomed by the Imam of Jamia Masjid Kishtwar and other clerics in the district.

Many were not persuaded. Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary decried the order, saying such a decision should not have been taken at the district level when an elected govt was in place. Tanvir Sadiq, spokesperson for Omar’s governing National Conference (NC), also debunked the “localised directive”. “I think it is interference in religious affairs,” Sadiq said.

Opposition PDP joined the chorus of condemnation, with party MLA Waheed Parra arguing that charity is not a security issue and urging reconsideration of the directive. CPI(M) state secretary MY Tarigami said the order effectively “casts suspicion on the entire Muslim community”.

BJP was the only one to welcome the order. J&K leader of opposition Sunil Sharma alleged that some individuals collect zakat during Ramadan and use the funds for “anti-national activities”. He called for such measures elsewhere to prevent misuse of charity for subversive purposes.

Lawyer moves HC against Maharashtra government’s decision to scrap Muslim quota

Feb 21, 2026

A city-based lawyer has approached the Bombay High Court challenging the Maharashtra government’s decision on February 17 to scrap the 5 percent reservation for Muslims in education. The plea claimed the decision was taken “deliberately and arbitrarily” with “racial discrimination against minorities.”

The Social Justice Department of the state government on Tuesday cancelled a July 7, 2014 Government Resolution (GR) issued under the ordinance that provided nearly 50 identified Muslim communities to avail caste verification and validity certificates under the Special Backward Category-A (SBC-A).

The plea filed by lawyer Syed Ejaz Abbas Naqvi through advocate Nitin Satpute claimed that the state government as “practicing racial discrimination with students of minority i.e. Muslim community” and same violated fundamental rights of the petitioner and the community.

“The state government allowing more than Rs 350 crore annual budget to madrasa education and withholding the innocent Muslims from mainstream education, is nothing but a racial discrimination to limiting Muslims young minds in the dark Talibani ages,” the plea claimed.

“The respondent authorities are violating the rights of minorities to get modern education,” the plea added. The petitioner claimed that the impugned decision was taken despite anyone being affected by Muslim castes’ SEBC quota and none had made complaint to State Backward Class Commission in that regard.

Pending hearing of its plea, the petitioner has sought a stay on the decision and also sought a direction to the authorities to produce the quantified data if any available about the condition of the classes and castes mentioned in the original decision that allowed quota for Muslims.

The HC will hear the plea in due course

The then Congress-NCP government in July 2014 had announced 16 per cent reservation for Maratha community and 5 percent quota for Muslims (from specified 50 Muslim castes) in government jobs and educations under the SEBC category.

Thereafter, the Bombay High Court on November 14, 2011, while striking down Maratha reservation (which was later provided through separate legislation), had upheld the principle of allowing reservation for Muslims for education purposes. It had cited “sufficient material and quantifiable data to sustain classification as special backward class.” The HC had upheld 5% quota for Muslims in government and government-funded educational institutions. However, it had stayed application of ordinance in respect of the private unaided institutions.

The HC bench headed by then Chief Justice Mohit Shah did not allow to breach 50 % ceiling in public jobs for Muslims and stayed the application of ordinance.

Later, the ordinance lapsed on December 23, 2014 and it was not converted into a permanent statute after the BJP-led government came to power in Maharashtra. Therefore, the July 2014 decision became ineffective.

The February 17 decision has formally cancelled the earlier directions and circulars including availing of caste and validity certificates for Muslim communities, prompting the petition in the High Court.

Centre forms Empowered Committee for CAA implementation in West Bengal

Feb 21, 2026

Ahead of Assembly polls in West Bengal, the Centre on Friday operationalised the process of granting citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act through a gazetted notification, notifying the constitution of an Empowered Committee in the state to process applications under the Act.

The development comes amid the ongoing political friction in West Bengal, where the Trinamool Congress government is at odds with the Centre over a number of issues and has been opposing the CAA, calling it discriminatory.

An order issued by Additional Secretary Nitesh Kumar Vyas said: “In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 6B of the Citizenship Act, 1955 (57 of 1955) read with sub-rules (1) and (3) of rule 11A of the Citizenship Rules, 2009, the Centre appoints the Deputy Registrar General of the Directorate of Census Operations, West Bengal, as the head of the committee.”

According to the order, members will be a Deputy Secretary-rank officer from the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau, nominees from the jurisdictional Foreigners Regional Registration Officer and the State Informatics Officer of the National Informatics Centre of the State of West Bengal (both not below Under Secretary rank), and the Postmaster General or a nominated Deputy Secretary-rank postal officer.

The Home Ministry order operationalises the Citizenship (Amendment) framework in West Bengal by formally constituting the state’s ‘Empowered Committee’ under Section 6B of the Citizenship Act and Rules 11A/13A of the Citizenship Rules — building on the all-India framework created by an MHA notification of March 11, 2024 — which set up the mechanism for processing citizenship applications under the CAA but still required state-specific constitution to function in practice. The committee’s job is to scrutinise applications from eligible persecuted minorities (as defined by the CAA), coordinate with district verification bodies, and approve or reject citizenship grants.

“Two invitees will join meetings: A representative from the Principal Secretary (Home) or Additional Chief Secretary (Home) of the West Bengal government, and a nominee from the jurisdictional Divisional Railway Manager,” it added.

According to the MHA, the notification aligns the committee’s terms with its March 11, 2024 order that established similar bodies in other states to verify and grant citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who entered India before December 31, 2014.

The government in 2024 had implemented the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, notifying the rules to fast-track citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who came to India before December 31, 2014.

Now, Indian nationality will be given under the CAA to the persecuted non-Muslim migrants – Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians – from the three countries.

Include 50% import duty on apples, save Jammu and Kashmir's fruit industry: Mehbooba Mufti to Modi

20.02.26

Emphasising that the interim Indo-US trade deal would take a toll on the nation's farmers and fruit growers, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Friday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to revisit the deal and implement a 50 per cent import duty on apples to protect Jammu and Kashmir's horticulture industry.

"The farmers of our country had certain safeguards before this Indo-US trade deal, but now those protections are gone. This will affect farmers across the country, making it difficult to assess the impact on Jammu and Kashmir, especially for our fruit, apple, and dry fruit growers," Mufti told reporters here.

She highlighted that the horticulture sector in Jammu and Kashmir not only sustains livelihoods but also supports the education of children and other responsibilities.

"The youth earn their livelihoods through horticulture. With this deal, we will become economically vulnerable, and unemployment will likely increase. We lack industrialisation in J-K, and our tourism industry also depends on stability in the region," she stated.

The former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir expressed that there is significant concern among the people regarding the interim deal.

"First, the Iranian apples entered the market and wreaked havoc, and now, our apples cannot compete with US apples, as farmers there receive subsidies ranging from around USD 30000-40000. We have minimal subsidies here, and our transportation costs are high; we also have to purchase fertilisers ourselves," she added.

Mufti said after 2019, when the Centre abrogated Article 370, the people of J-K "exercised great restraint" even in the face of many adversities.

"I appeal to the prime minister to consider that the people of J-K have faced various difficulties. If you take away our livelihoods, employment opportunities, and the education of our children, what will these people do? Where will the countless youths dependent on horticulture go?" She insisted that the prime minister should reconsider the agreement and at least establish a 50 per cent import duty on apples. "I also request the government here to think about crop insurance, increasing CA stores, and also the national highway, which often closes," she said.

The PDP president stressed that the interim trade deal would have a significant impact, not only economically but also socially.

"The drug addiction due to unemployment here will increase. Jammu and Kashmir is a sensitive state, and the prime minister is aware of the measures taken to normalise the situation here. If there is an attack on our fruit industry, which is our backbone, the consequences could be dire," she asserted.

She reiterated her appeal to Modi to take action to protect Jammu and Kashmir's fruit industry.

Israeli strikes in Lebanon kill at least 12 people, intensifying rising regional tensions

February 20, 2026

BEIRUT: At least 10 people were killed and 24 wounded — including three children — in Israeli strikes in Lebanon’s eastern Bekaa Valley Friday, the Lebanese Health Ministry reported. Another two people were killed by an Israeli strike on a Palestinian refugee camp earlier in the day.

Israel said it had hit “command centers” of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah in Bekaa Valley. There was no immediate statement from Hezbollah.

Local television footage from the scene of one of the strikes in the Bekaa showed the targeted site appeared to be an apartment building, and emergency crews were fighting a fire and searching in the rubble for survivors.

Earlier Friday, another Israeli strike had hit a Palestinian refugee camp in the port city of Sidon, killing two people.

The Israeli military said it hit a “Hamas command center” in the Ein el-Hilweh camp. Hamas acknowledged that two of its members had been killed in the strike but called the claim that a command center was struck a “flimsy pretext.” It said the targeted building belonged to a joint security force made up of various Palestinian factions that is tasked with maintaining security in the camp.

After the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel triggered war in Gaza, Hezbollah began firing rockets from Lebanon into Israel in support of Hamas and the Palestinians.

Israel responded with airstrikes and shelling. The low-level conflict escalated into full-scale war in September 2024, later reined in but not fully stopped by a US-brokered ceasefire two months later.

Since then, Israel has accused Hezbollah of trying to rebuild and has carried out near-daily strikes in Lebanon that it says target Hezbollah militants and facilities. Hezbollah has claimed one strike against Israel since the ceasefire.

The death toll from Friday’s strikes was unusually high and comes at a moment of intensified tensions in the region as the United States has threatened to strike Iran — a backer of both Hezbollah and Hamas — if negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program fail to produce a deal.

During last year’s Israel-Iran war, Hezbollah remained on the sidelines, but many in Lebanon fear that the country will be pulled in should another war break out.

US makes plans to reopen embassy in Syria after 14 years

February 20, 2026

WASHINGTON: The Trump administration has informed Congress that it intends to proceed with planning for a potential re-opening of the US Embassy in Damascus, Syria, which was shuttered in 2012 during the country’s civil war.

A notice to congressional committees earlier this month, which was obtained by The Associated Press, informed lawmakers of the State Department’s “intent to implement a phased approach to potentially resume embassy operations in Syria.”

The Feb. 10 notification said that spending on the plans would begin in 15 days, or next week, although there was no timeline offered for when they would be complete or when US personnel might return to Damascus on a full-time basis.

The administration has been considering re-opening the embassy since last year, shortly after longtime strongman Bashar Assad was ousted in December 2024, and it has been a priority for President Donald Trump’s ambassador to Turkiye and special envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack.

Barrack has pushed for a deep rapprochement with Syria and its new leadership under former rebel Ahmad Al-Sharaa and has successfully advocated for the lifting of US sanctions and a reintegration of Syria into the regional and international communities.

Trump told reporters on Friday that Al-Sharaa was “doing a phenomenal job” as president. “He’s a rough guy. He’s not a choir boy. A choir boy couldn’t do it,” Trump said. “But Syria’s coming together.”

Last May, Barrack visited Damascus and raised the US flag at the embassy compound, although the embassy was not yet re-opened.

The same day the congressional notification was sent, Barrack lauded Syria’s decision to participate in the coalition that is combating the Daesh militant group, even as the US military has withdrawn from a small, but important, base in the southeast and there remain significant issues between the government and the Kurdish minority.

“Regional solutions, shared responsibility. Syria’s participation in the D-Daesh Coalition meeting in Riyadh marks a new chapter in collective security,” Barrack said.

The embassy re-opening plans are classified and the State Department declined to comment on details beyond confirming that the congressional notification was sent.

However, the department has taken a similar “phased” approach in its plans to re-open the US Embassy in Caracas, Venezuela, following the US military operation that ousted former President Nicolás Maduro in January, with the deployment of temporary staffers who would live in and work out of interim facilities.

Syria welcomes Canada’s decision to amend sanctions

February 20, 2026

DAMSCUS: Syria’s Central Bank governor, Abdulkader Husarieh, commended the Canadian government’s decision to amend the sanctions imposed on Damascus under the Special Economic Measures Regulations, including the lifting of the comprehensive economic embargo in place since May 2011.

In a post published on his personal Facebook page, Husarieh described the move as an important milestone that reinforces the implementation of understandings reached during his recent visit to Canada.

He added that the amendment provides an opportunity to boost economic relations and activate cooperation between Canadian and Syrian banks and financial institutions.

Husarieh said the decision could pave the way for Canadian participation in Syria’s reconstruction and infrastructure development.

Meanwhile, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent and the Turkish Red Crescent signed cooperation agreements on Friday to strengthen humanitarian efforts in Syria amid ongoing crises and economic hardship.

Syrian Arab Red Crescent President Hazem Bakleh met in Damascus with Alper Kucuk, the Turkish Red Crescent’s director general for international affairs and migration services, to discuss rising humanitarian needs and ways to enhance coordination in support of vulnerable communities.

According to a statement released by the Syrian organization, the agreement provides for expanding relief and service activities.

It includes support for the construction of a new Red Crescent branch headquarters in Idlib province and the launch of a project to distribute hot meals and bread in Damascus and Aleppo during the holy month of Ramadan.

The Syrian Arab Red Crescent has sought to broaden partnerships with regional and international organizations in recent years to strengthen its operational capacity across multiple provinces, as the country continues to face economic strain and humanitarian challenges affecting large segments of the population.

Lebanon says two killed in Israeli strike on Palestinian refugee camp

February 20, 2026

SIDON: Lebanon said an Israeli strike on the country’s largest Palestinian refugee camp killed two people on Friday, with Israel’s army saying it had targeted the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The official National News Agency said “an Israeli drone” targeted a neighborhood of the Ain Al-Helweh camp, which is located on the outskirts of the southern city of Sidon.

Lebanon’s health ministry said two people were killed in the raid. The NNA had earlier reported one dead and an unspecified number of wounded.

An AFP correspondent saw smoke rising from a building in the densely populated camp as ambulances headed to the scene.

The Israeli army said in a statement that its forces “struck a Hamas command center from which terrorists operated,” calling activity there “a violation of the ceasefire understandings between Israel and Lebanon” and a threat to Israel.

The Israeli military “is operating against the entrenchment” of the Palestinian militant group in Lebanon and will “continue to act decisively against Hamas terrorists wherever they operate,” it added.

Israel has kept up regular strikes on Lebanon despite a November 2024 ceasefire that sought to halt more than a year of hostilities with the militant group Hezbollah.

Israel has also struck targets belonging to Hezbollah’s Palestinian ally Hamas, including in a raid on Ain Al-Helweh last November that killed 13 people.

The UN rights office had said 11 children were killed in that strike, which Israel said targeted a Hamas training compound, though the group denied it had military installations in Palestinian camps in Lebanon.

In October 2023, Hezbollah began launching rockets at Israel in support of Hamas at the outset of the Gaza war, triggering hostilities that culminated in two months of all-out war between Israel and the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group.

On Sunday, Lebanon said an Israeli strike near the Syrian border in the country’s east killed four people, as Israel said it targeted operatives from Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad.

US and Iran slide towards conflict as military buildup eclipses nuclear talks

February 21, 2026

Iran and the United States are sliding rapidly towards military conflict as hopes fade for a diplomatic solution to their standoff over Tehran’s nuclear program, officials on both sides and diplomats across the Gulf and Europe say.

Iran’s Gulf neighbors and its enemy Israel now consider a conflict to be more likely than a settlement, these sources say, with Washington building up one of its biggest military deployments in the region since the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Israel’s government believes Tehran and Washington are at an impasse and is making preparations for possible joint military action with the United States, though no decision has been made yet on whether to carry out such an operation, said a source familiar with the planning.

It would be the second time the US and Israel have attacked Iran in less than a year, following US and Israeli airstrikes against military and nuclear facilities last June.

Regional officials say oil-producing Gulf countries are preparing for a possible military confrontation that they fear could spin out of control and destabilize the Middle East.

Two Israeli officials told Reuters they believe the gaps between Washington and Tehran are unbridgeable and that the chances of a near‑term military escalation are high.

Some regional officials say Tehran is dangerously miscalculating by holding out for concessions, with US President Donald Trump boxed in by his own military buildup - unable to scale it back without losing face if there is no firm commitment from Iran to abandon its nuclear weapons ambitions.

“Both sides are sticking to their guns,” said Alan Eyre, a former US diplomat and Iran specialist, adding that nothing meaningful can emerge “unless the US and Iran walk back from their red lines - which I don’t think they will.”

“What Trump can’t do is assemble all this military, and then come back with a ‘so‑so’ deal and pull out the military. I think he thinks he’ll lose face,” he said. “If he attacks, it’s going to get ugly quickly.”

Two rounds of Iran-US talks have stalled on core issues, from uranium enrichment to missiles and sanctions relief.

When Omani mediators delivered an envelope from the US side containing missile‑related proposals, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi refused even to open it and returned it, a source familiar with the talks said.

After talks in Geneva on Tuesday, Araghchi said the sides had agreed on “guiding principles,” but the White House said there was still distance between them.

Iran is expected to submit a written proposal in the coming days, a US official said, and Araghchi said on Friday he expected to have a draft counterproposal ready within days.

But Trump, who has sent aircraft carriers, warships and jets to the Middle East, warned Iran on Thursday it must make a deal over its nuclear program or “really bad things” will happen.

He appeared to set a deadline of 10 to 15 days, drawing a threat from Tehran to retaliate against US bases in the region if attacked. The rising tensions have pushed up oil prices.

US officials say Trump has yet to make up his mind about using military force although he acknowledged on Friday that he could order a limited strike to try to force Iran into a deal.

“I guess I can say I am considering that,” he told reporters.

The possible timing of an attack is unclear. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is due to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on February 28 to discuss Iran. A senior US official said it would be mid-March before all US forces were in place.

Battered by Gaza war, Israel’s tech sector in recovery mode

February 21, 2026

JERUSALEM: Israel’s vital tech sector, dragged down by the war in Gaza, is showing early signs of recovery, buoyed by a surge in defense innovation and fresh investment momentum.

Cutting-edge technologies represent 17 percent of the country’s GDP, 11.5 percent of jobs and 57 percent of exports, according to the latest available data from the Israel Innovation Authority (IIA), published in September 2025.

But like the rest of the economy, the sector was not spared the knock-on effects of the war, which began in October 2023 and led to staffing shortages and skittishness from would-be backers.

Now, with a ceasefire largely holding in Gaza since October, Israel’s appeal is gradually returning, as illustrated in mid-December, when US chip giant Nvidia announced it would create a massive research and development center in the north that could host up to 10,000 employees.

“Investors are coming to Israel nonstop,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the time.

After the war, the recovery can’t come soon enough.

“High-tech companies had to overcome massive staffing cuts, because 15 to 20 percent of employees, and sometimes more, were called up” to the front as reservists, IIA director Dror Bin told AFP.

To make matters worse, in late 2023 and 2024, “air traffic, a crucial element of this globalized sector, was suspended, and foreign investors froze everything while waiting to see what would happen,” he added.

The war also sparked a brain drain in Israel.

Between October 2023 and July 2024, about 8,300 employees in advanced technologies left the country for a year or more, according to an IIA report published in April 2025.

The figure represents around 2.1 percent of the sector’s workforce.

The report did not specify how many employees left Israel to work for foreign companies versus Israeli firms based abroad, or how many have since returned to Israel.

- Rise in defense startups -

In 2023, the tech sector far outpaced GDP growth, increasing by 13.7 percent compared to 1.8 percent for GDP.

But the sector’s output stagnated in 2024 and 2025, according to IIA figures.

Industry professionals now believe the industry is turning a corner.

Israeli high-tech companies raised $15.6 billion in private funding in 2025, up from $12.2 billion in 2024, according to preliminary figures published in December by Startup Nation Central (SNC), a non-profit organization that promotes Israeli innovation.

Deep tech — innovation based on major scientific or engineering advances such as artificial intelligence, biotech and quantum computing — returned in 2025 to its pre-2021 levels, according to the IIA.

The year 2021 is considered a historic peak for Israeli tech.

The past two years have also seen a surge in Israeli defense technologies, with the military engaged on several fronts from Lebanon and Syria to Iran, Yemen, Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Between July 2024 and April 2025, the number of startups in the defense sector nearly doubled, from 160 to 312, according to SNC.

Of the more than 300 emerging companies collaborating with the research and development department of Israel’s defense ministry, “over 130 joined our operations during the war,” Director General Amir Baram said in December.

Until then, the ministry had primarily sourced from Israel’s large defense firms, said Menahem Landau, head of Caveret Ventures, a defense tech investment company.

But he said the war pushed the ministry “to accept products that were not necessarily fully finished and tested, coming from startups.”

“Defense-related technologies have replaced cybersecurity as the most in-demand high-tech sector,” the reserve lieutenant colonel explained.

“Not only in Israel but worldwide, due to the war between Russia and Ukraine and tensions with China.”

Controversial Israeli minister enters area around Al-Aqsa Mosque on first Friday of Ramadan

February 20, 2026

JERUSALEM: Israel’s far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, entered the area around Al-Aqsa Mosque on Friday, coinciding with the first Friday prayers of Ramadan.

Footage shared on social media showed him arriving through the Moroccan Gate, accompanied by the Israeli police commissioner, Daniel Levy, and the Jerusalem District police commander, Avshalom Peled.

Ben-Gvir was seen making provocative remarks directed at Palestinians in the presence of Israeli police officers, the Palestinian Wafa news agency reported.

The Moroccan Gate, located near Al-Buraq Wall, is one of the main entrances to Al-Aqsa and has been under Israeli control since 1967. It is regularly used by Israeli forces and settlers to access the mosque compound.

Jerusalem Governorate said the minister’s actions came amid heightened Israeli security measures and tighter restrictions on Palestinian in occupied Jerusalem during Ramadan.

Despite this, an estimated 80,000 worshippers attended the first Friday prayers of Ramadan at Al-Aqsa Mosque, according to figures provided by the Islamic Waqf Department in Jerusalem.

From early in the morning, Israeli forces imposed strict controls on Palestinians traveling from the West Bank to Jerusalem. Dozens of elderly worshippers were reportedly turned back at the Qalandia and Bethlehem checkpoints after being told they lacked the necessary permits.

Security forces also briefly detained four paramedics and disrupted the work of journalists and medical teams at Qalandia, witnesses said.

Additional security measures were also enforced at entrances to Jerusalem’s Old City and the gates of Al-Aqsa, with young men subjected to identity checks and a number of worshippers denied access.

Hamas retakes control of daily life in Gaza

February 20, 2026

GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories: Hamas has reasserted control over large parts of Gaza from which the Israeli military withdrew under the US-sponsored ceasefire, exercising power through police and working to restart public administration.

The inaugural meeting of US President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace” on Thursday included an announcement on the recruitment of a new transitional Palestinian police force in Gaza meant to take over security from Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.

It also saw several countries pledge to send troops for the nascent International Stabilization Force in the Gaza Strip, without any timetable set.

Hamas still refuses to lay down its arms under the conditions set by Israel, but it has pledged to hand over power, insisting it no longer wants to administer the territory it seized by force nearly 20 years ago.

“Everyone knows that Hamas possesses the real power in Gaza,” said Jaber Shaaban, a displaced Palestinian living in a tent in Gaza City.

“Hamas is the strongest and largest organized entity and it has power, police and a government,” the 64-year-old added.

“Without Hamas, the committee cannot work,” he said, referring to the 15-member Palestinian technocratic committee formed to handle day-to-day governance of Gaza.

Since a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel began on October 10, Gaza has been divided by a so-called “Yellow Line” beyond which Israeli forces are stationed and which leaves the military in control of just over half of the territory.

“Currently, we operate only in areas under Hamas control,” said Abu Ashraf Barbah, a merchant who before the war supplied food items across the territory of more than two million Palestinians.

“The Hamas ministry is the one that deals with traders and controls the markets, while the Hamas police carry out campaigns against tax evaders,” he added.

The newly-formed Palestinian technocratic body is primarily mandated to oversee civilian services such as health, education and municipal affairs.

- In the markets, on the streets -

Phase two of Trump’s Gaza ceasefire plan, which the UN Security Council endorsed in November, stipulates that Hamas should disarm and the Strip’s day-to-day governance be handed over to the technocratic committee.

But Israeli officials say Hamas still has around 20,000 fighters in Gaza and several thousand rockets.

The return to some form of public order is one of the challenges of the second phase, which the United States launched last month.

Concrete results have been slow to materialize.

While waiting for the transitional authority to take shape, Gaza’s existing police force — which answers to Hamas authorities — has returned to the streets since the ceasefire took effect.

AFP journalists reported that uniformed, armed police have deployed at major intersections, hospital entrances and government buildings, directing traffic and regulating markets.

With many police stations destroyed during Israeli air strikes, some units have resumed operations from temporary tents, residents said.

For traders, Hamas’s influence is most visible.

“The one controlling everything in Gaza’s economy is Hamas,” said 41-year-old merchant Samir Abu Adnan.

“Hamas has started collecting taxes, the ministry of economy publishes daily price lists, and the police and ministries are still affiliated with Hamas,” he said.

Several traders confirmed to AFP that civil servants were collecting taxes in markets and shops, relying on police enforcement in cases of non-compliance.

- ‘Hamas controls the levers’ -

In rare testimony to the media, a police captain in Gaza City told AFP that the force would maintain law and order regardless of who formally governs the territory.

“We are a police force that carries out the government’s instructions,” the 44-year-old officer said, declining to be identified for security reasons.

“We do not care who will be in the political leadership of the government,” he added.

“What matters to me is that the incoming government is not affiliated with the occupation,” he said, referring to Israel.

“If the committee takes over Gaza, we will help it.”

But there is uncertainty over how the transitional technocratic committee would be deployed in the territory and what would happen to the current police force.

Amani Ashtiwi, a teacher living in a tent in central Gaza, said the committee would need “very strong support from the Palestinian Authority, Egypt and America to be able to govern Gaza.”

“The committee faces a long and difficult road because Hamas controls the levers of life in Gaza,” Ashtiwi added.

For merchant Abu Adnan, Hamas still “holds the power.”

“If the committee takes over, it will need Hamas’s approval for every decision,” he said.

SDAIA president says Saudi Arabia is building an integrated AI ecosystem

February 20, 2026

RIYADH: Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority President Abdullah Al-Ghamdi says that Saudi Arabia is moving steadily to establish artificial intelligence as a trusted national capability, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Guided by the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, Al-Ghamdi said the goal is to use AI to help develop government services, enhance competitiveness, build human capacity and improve quality of life through a comprehensive strategy based on three main pillars that unlock the potential of this technology and achieve sustainable developmental impact.

“The first pillar focuses on building human capacity and enhancing readiness to engage with AI technologies,” he said.

The second pillar is building an integrated national AI ecosystem that drives expansion and innovation by developing advanced digital infrastructure that enables various sectors to adopt AI applications efficiently, consistently and with effective governance, Al-Ghamdi said.

The third pillar, he said, is governance that ensures responsible and measurable AI through a national framework aligned with international standards.

This came during Al-Ghamdi’s speech at a high-level ministerial session held on Thursday on the sidelines of the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.

He is heading the Saudi delegation, and the session saw broad participation from heads of state, decision-makers and technology leaders from around the world.

Al-Ghamdi also had a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday evening, discussed AI cooperation and expressed his gratitude for hosting the summit and for the hospitality extended to the participants.

Greening the rooftops: Can green roofs take root in Saudi Arabia’s cities?

RAHAJ JAMBI

February 20, 2026

RIYADH: On Feb. 11, Riyadh marked a pivotal moment in Saudi Arabia’s sustainability journey with the official launch of the Saudi Green Building Alliance.

Announced during the Developers and Green Building Leaders Forum, the initiative signals a shift toward embedding environmental performance at the core of Saudi Arabia’s rapidly expanding built environment.

“SGBA is Saudi Arabia’s national green building council — an independent, nonprofit platform that brings together government, developers, investors, designers, contractors, and solution providers to accelerate sustainable, low-carbon, climate-resilient buildings and cities across the Kingdom,” said Mohammed Al-Surf, founder and CEO of SGBA.

“Our role is to align the market, support standards and best practice, build capacity, and help translate Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative into practical action in the built environment.”

Saudi Arabia is in the midst of one of the largest urban development cycles globally. New districts are taking shape, giga-projects are redefining skylines, and cities such as Riyadh and Jeddah are expanding at unprecedented speed. According to Al-Surf, the defining question is whether this growth will lock in decades of inefficiency and emissions — or set a global benchmark for resilient, climate-smart cities aligned with Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative.

Across leading global cities, green rooftops are no longer seen as decorative luxuries but as functional infrastructure. In Saudi Arabia, they intersect directly with national priorities around livability, emissions reduction, and quality of life.

“Green rooftops are not just aesthetics — they are urban infrastructure. In a Vision 2030 context, they can support: Heat reduction and comfort in cities, Energy efficiency and peak load reduction, Healthier, more livable neighborhoods, Nature-based solutions that improve biodiversity and stormwater performance. They’re a practical way to bring climate resilience and quality of life into everyday buildings.” Al-Surf said.

“In Saudi cities, where roofs are a major source of heat gain, vegetated systems can significantly reduce surface temperatures, lower indoor cooling demand, and extend the lifespan of roofing membranes by protecting them from thermal stress.”

In Riyadh, where summer temperatures frequently exceed 45°C, urban heat is more than discomfort — it is a public health issue. Green rooftops can help mitigate the urban heat-island effect by cooling surrounding microclimates and reducing heat stress, particularly in dense neighborhoods. Their impact extends beyond temperature regulation, contributing to environmental resilience and community wellbeing.

Can green roofs work in the desert?

Skepticism persists about whether rooftop greening can truly succeed in arid, high-heat environments. The challenges are undeniable: Water scarcity, extreme summer temperatures, dust accumulation, intense ultraviolet exposure, and long-term maintenance demands all complicate rooftop planting in desert climates.

Yet technological and design advances are reshaping what is possible. Drought-tolerant native species, engineered lightweight soil substrates, drip irrigation systems, and smart water reuse technologies are making rooftop greening increasingly viable. Climate-responsive design remains essential.

Addressing misconceptions is equally important. Al-Surf said: “Three common misconceptions that green roofs are only for Europe. Not true — they just need Saudi-appropriate design. They require lots of water. (But ) not with xeriscape principles, smart irrigation, and non-potable reuse. They’re just decoration. (In reality) They’re thermal, social, and resilience infrastructure.”

One of the most persistent myths is that green roofs waste water. In practice, modern systems prioritize efficiency through xeriscaping principles, soil moisture sensors, weather-based irrigation controls, and the use of treated or non-potable water.

Olivia Jurado, an eco-holistic wellness practitioner who helped establish a regenerative rooftop garden in Dubai, points to regional examples as proof of concept.

“Many people believe it is not possible to grow green spaces in the desert,” she said. “But with the right planting methods and knowledge of what thrives locally, urban rooftop gardens can grow and flourish — and they don’t require excessive tending once mature.”

She underscores the broader ecological and social dividends, from supporting pollinators such as bees and butterflies to creating small biodiversity corridors within cities and offering experiential learning spaces for schools and workplaces.

“Green rooftops provide so many benefits for the community and the environment. Including measurably reducing temperature, providing green spaces for wellbeing and connection to nature. They also help build community by providing a green space for connection, while tending to the space provides further learning opportunities. Rooftop and urban gardens also contribute to supporting and inviting pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, which are so important to our ecosystems.” Jurado said.

Many people believe that it is not possible to grow green spaces in the desert but it has been proven regionally that with the right planting methods and knowing the types of plants that thrive in the region (especially with regenerative gardening practices) urban rooftop gardens can and do indeed grow and thrive and they do not require much tending to once they are mature.

“Every building and community should be encouraged and incentivized to grown their own gardens, it would not only beautify the urban spaces and help cool them, it would also provide a space of wellbeing for their respective communities.”

“It would be amazing to see urban rooftop gardens peeking from the tops of a majority of buildings by 2030.”

For developers, cost often becomes the deciding factor. Green roofs require upfront investment and are frequently cut during value engineering. However, when positioned as long-term performance infrastructure rather than aesthetic add-ons, the financial case becomes more compelling. Reduced cooling loads translate into energy savings; protected roofing membranes extend asset lifespan; premium amenities enhance property value; and stronger ESG credentials improve market positioning.

“The business case is strongest when you frame green roofs as: Energy and thermal risk management, Asset value and tenant premium, Lifecycle savings, Certification and market access,” Al-Surf explained. While upfront costs are real, returns improve when systems are climate-fit, scaled appropriately, and designed as functional amenities rather than symbolic gestures.

Looking ahead, the Saudi Green Building Alliance plans to develop national guidelines tailored to arid climates, establish demonstration rooftops across regions, and cultivate local expertise.

As Saudi Arabia’s skylines continue to rise, rooftops remain vast and largely untapped surfaces. By 2030, they could evolve into gardens, habitats, and cooling systems integrated into everyday urban life — proof that even in the desert, cities can grow greener from the top down.

Saudi charity platform Ehsan launches Ramadan fundraising drive, backed by King Salman

February 20, 2026

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia on Friday launched the sixth annual National Charity Campaign on the national charity platform, Ehsan.

The initiative, organized with the support of King Salman, runs throughout the holy month of Ramadan, which is traditionally a time when charitable giving is especially encouraged.

The king and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made personal donations to the drive, contributing SAR40 million ($10.6 million) and SAR30 million respectively.

Ibrahim Al-Husseini, the CEO of Ehsan, said the campaign offers a secure, official channel through which individuals and organizations can contribute to a wide range of charitable and developmental projects across the Kingdom.

“The National Charity Campaign operates with advanced digital governance, enabling donations to reach beneficiaries efficiently,” he said. He highlighted in particular the Ehsan Endowment Fund, which invests contributions and uses the returns to fund sustainable charitable projects.

The Ehsan platform continues to attract strong participation from individuals, businesses, and government and nonprofit organizations, with positive effects for those who benefit from the donations, Al-Husseini said.

The campaign also aligns with the goals of Vision 2030 by helping to support the growth of the Kingdom’s non-profit sector and ensure the continuity of charitable efforts, he added.

The platform is supported by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority, and adheres to high standards of governance to secure the collection and distribution of donations, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Donations can be made throughout Ramadan at ehsan.sa, on the platform’s mobile app, by calling the 800 124 7000, or through designated bank accounts.

Western media pushing ‘one-sided narrative’ about Ukraine conflict – Russia

21 Feb, 2026

The Western media has abandoned the principles of fair journalism when covering the Ukraine conflict, Russia said during an informal meeting of the UN Security Council on Friday.

Russian Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Anna Evstigneeva said foreign reporters created “a positive and even romanticized image” of the 2014 Western-backed coup in Kiev, a series of events that Moscow says laid the groundwork for the current conflict.

The ouster of democratically elected President Viktor Yanukovich was rejected by the regions of Crimea and Donbass, which voted to join Russia in 2014 and 2022, respectively.

Evstigneeva said Western news outlets routinely ignored reports of Ukrainian troops indiscriminately shelling cities and killing civilians while attempting to quash a revolt in Donbass.

The diplomat said biased reporting continued after Russia sent troops to Ukraine in February 2022, citing security concerns and the need to protect the Russian-speaking population.

“A rigid, one-sided narrative consolidated within days. The preceding years as well as our country’s stated objectives, security concerns and diplomatic initiatives were either ignored or presumed bad faith,” Evstigneeva said. She added that Russia’s position “received limited and often superficial coverage.”

Evstigneeva accused Western journalists of parroting what she called “unverified claims” that Russian soldiers massacred civilians in the Ukrainian city of Bucha in the spring of 2022, while remaining silent on the civilian death toll from the Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region in August 2024.

Since 2022, the UK and EU have banned multiple Russian news organizations, including RT and Sputnik, citing claims that they spread “propaganda.” Russia has described the restrictions as a campaign to silence the truth about the conflict.

Hungary blocks EU loan to Ukraine

20 Feb, 2026

Budapest has imposed a veto on a €90 billion ($106 billion) EU loan for Ukraine agreed in December. The move was made in response to Kiev “blackmailing” Hungary and violating its obligations to the EU by halting oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has said.

Druzhba is a Soviet-era pipeline that was used to deliver Russian crude to Hungary and Slovakia via Ukraine. The transit of oil via the conduit has been on hold since late January, with Kiev blaming Russia for damaging it. Moscow has denied the allegations.

“We are blocking the €90 billion EU loan for Ukraine until oil transit to Hungary via the Druzhba pipeline resumes,” Szijjarto stated in a post on X on Friday.

Viktor Orban accused Ukraine of blackmail through halting transit a day before Budapest imposed its veto on the loan. Brussels also urged Kiev to restore the pipeline earlier this week.

The EU sought to extend a €90 billion interest-free loan to Ukraine for 2026-2027. According to the European Commission, the plan included €60 billion earmarked for military needs and €30 billion for “general budget support.” Brussels still needs unanimity from all 27 EU members to move forward with the plan.

Hungary, along with several other EU members, had previously opted out of the scheme, which was expected to be covered through joint EU borrowing. The European Commission had warned that the plan could result in up to €5.6 billion in annual interest payments for bloc members.

Kiev expects its Western backers to cover a budget deficit of around $50 billion this year, with most non-military government expenses, including salaries, pensions, healthcare, and education, relying entirely on foreign aid. El Pais reported in October that the Ukrainian government could literally run out of money by April.

The scheme was approved after the bloc’s members failed to reach a consensus on a ‘reparations loan’ of around €140 billion that was to be secured through the use of frozen Russian assets as collateral. Moscow has said it would regard any use of its frozen assets as theft and take retaliatory steps.

Why Islamic finance could provide an ethical model for funding the green transition

February 20, 2026

In recent years, green finance has become a key policy in developed countries. The term refers to the loans and investments that fund the transition to a low-carbon economy. But one of the main challenges in this area is the gap between environmental claims and realities – so-called “greenwashing”.

Because of this, alternative finance models that emphasise a direct link between capital and actual economic activities have been receiving more attention. The Islamic financial system is one such alternative. In this system, financing (in other words, lending) is legitimate when it is linked to real economic activities that benefit people and society.

Islamic finance, with its core values of fairness and social responsibility, could be a means of enhancing credibility and transparency within green finance. In other words, its principles could be seen as more than just an ideological or faith alternative to the conventional system.

Unlike other models, Islamic finance emphasises a direct link between financing and actual assets or activities. Profits must come from work – simply lending money to make a profit is not permitted. This allows for a clearer definition of green projects, helping to ensure that resources are spent on activities with a specific economic and social purpose.

The requirement for transparency, the prohibition on excessive uncertainty, speculation, and the emphasis on social responsibility mean that the “green” claim must be linked to observable and measurable financial activities.

Green finance and green sukuk

One of the most tangible links between Islamic finance and green finance is green sukuk (Islamic bonds). Conventional bonds are based on a debt commitment – the investor provides money and receives regular fixed interest payments before the debt is repaid. But sukuk represent real ownership or a real interest in an asset or project.

In simple terms, sukuk’s investors will focus on real economic activities rather than an abstract financial contract. For example, the invested capital could be directed into projects like renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, solar power plants, wind energy initiatives, water treatment facilities or clean technology. This means earning profit from a tangible work in real financial projects.

Conversely, with a conventional bond, a significant part of the invested capital might go into “non-real” projects. For example, a stakeholder might use the invested capital to buy shares. They might expect the shares to increase in value and they could then sell them for a profit. The earnings here would come from the fluctuations in the share price, not from real economic activities like industries, production or entrepreneurship.

Through green sukuk, assets and economic activities must be environmentally focused – things like solar power plants, wind projects or clean transport initiatives. This makes the project’s greenness an intrinsic part of the financial instrument.

ESG (environmental, social and governance) sukuk is expected to surpass US$70 billion (£52 billion) globally this year. Green sukuk could play a bridging role in the UK – the country is a global hub for both green and Islamic finance.

The UK’s green sukuk market would not have to replace the green bond market. But it could complement it, particularly for investors (both Muslim and non-Muslim) who value transparency and a direct link between capital and environmental impact.

Islamic fintech (financial technology) also has a role. Fintech is not just about digitising financial services; by using technology to make transactions cheaper, more convenient and more secure, it changes how finance products are accessed, monitored and trusted. Islamic fintech operates in accordance with Islamic finance principles and values.

In green finance, Islamic fintech allows crowdfunding, asset tokenisation (turning real assets into digital currency), and rapid information sharing with investors. This can cut costs and increase transparency, and provide a foundation for individual investors and small institutions such as credit unions to access investment opportunities.

Islamic fintech’s main difference lies in its ethical framework. Conventional fintech mainly focuses on speed, scalability and profitability. But from the outset, Islamic fintech is shaped by ethical limitations – things like avoiding speculation, emphasising transparency and linking crowdfunding to projects that make profits from real economic activities.

The UK has strong fintech infrastructure, flexible and supportive financial regulation and a prominent place in Islamic finance. This environment gives the country a unique opportunity to test ethical finance in a modern and secular context. This in turn could create more opportunities for green finance projects.

Measuring, monitoring and verifying the environmental impact of projects over time are significant challenges. Initially, most green financial commitments are clear, but determining whether a project reduces carbon and improves sustainability is time consuming and costly.

In these situations, AI can also play a role. Ethical AI in this context means that algorithms are used for analysis and accountability within green projects. Machine-learning algorithms, for instance, can continuously analyse the environmental data for projects financed through green sukuk and identify deviations between goals and results. This reduces the risk of greenwashing and can increase investor confidence.

To comply with Islamic finance, the use of AI must serve specific ethical purposes. This means AI decision-making should not compromise transparency, justice or accountability. This view is consistent with emerging UK approaches to AI regulation, which emphasise trustworthy AI aligned with the public interest.

Applying Islamic finance does not have to be an identity or political project. Rather, it can be a practical and ethical framework for financing the green transition. In short, it can complement current financial systems to address some of humanity’s most pressing economic and environmental challenges.

Royal Mint to donate money from gold bar sales to Islamic Relief UK during Ramadan

20 Feb 2026

The Royal Mint has announced a fundraising partnership with Islamic Relief UK, in which some money from sales of gold bars will be donated to the international humanitarian charity during this year’s Ramadan.

Throughout the month of Ramadan (19 February - 20 March), 2.5% of online sales revenue from the currency supplier’s 1g and 5g gold bars featuring the Kaaba, the sacred Muslim site, will be donated to Islamic Relief UK.

In support of the charity’s Sudan Emergency Appeal, the Royal Mint will also donate two 1g and two 5kg Kaaba bars for Islamic Relief UK to auction.

Both organisations will also run a joint social media prize draw, giving away 10 of the smaller gold bars.

The Kaaba range was created in collaboration with the Muslim Council of Wales in 2023, originally launching as a 20g minted bar.

Currently, the 1g bars are listed for £175 on the Royal Mint’s website while the 5g bars are listed for £689.

Partnership will help ensure aid is delivered ‘to those who need it most’

Zia Salik, interim director of Islamic Relief UK, said: “We’re thankful to be supported by the Royal Mint this Ramadan.

“Right now, in Sudan, civilians are facing dire conditions as the humanitarian need continues to rise.

“The money raised from the sale of these Kaaba bars will support our programmes in Sudan which are a vital lifeline to families whose lives have been torn apart by conflict.

“Our partnership with the Royal Mint is a very special one. Their support for our work will help to ensure that our programmes can deliver aid to those who need it most.”

Andrew Dickey, director of precious metals at the Royal Mint, said: “I’m proud to continue the Royal Mint’s partnership with Islamic Relief UK for Ramadan.

“This holy month is a time of giving, and we’re delighted to support the charity’s vital work through our sales donations and event auctions.”

Abusive voicemail over Muslim burials reported to gardaí

20 Feb 2026

Staff working for Minister Robert Troy have reported to the gardaí an abusive voicemail left on the politician’s office phone after he published a video announcing that he had spoken with Westmeath County Council about opening up Ballyglass Cemetery in Mullingar to Muslim burials.

“I didn’t listen to it myself,” he said, explaining that his staff told him not to. He was disappointed, however, at receiving it.

The issue did prompt much interest: a clarifying social media post put up by Minister Troy received almost 2,800 endorsements and a similar number of comments.

“And there was a similar number of comments on it, and those comments were, I suppose, 50/50 positive and negative,” he said this week.

As it happens, there is no need for any special arrangements to have Muslim burials at Ballyglass, as it is run by the local authority, and thus open to those of any faith or none.

“There’s no change required to the existing bylaws or protocols in Ballyglass.

“This is, unfortunately, an attempt by some people to portray this as something that it’s not, and it’s an attempt by some people to sow division,” Minister Troy told the Westmeath Examiner.

Minister Troy approached the council over allowing Muslim burials at Ballyglass after a four-year-old Muslim boy died near his home in Farranshock after being struck by a car. The child was buried in Newcastle, County Dublin.

“I know the family well, and they were just telling me after that, they tried to make contact with the council in relation to burial in Ballyglass.”

Speed was crucial, as among Islamic people, the custom is to bury their deceased within 24 hours.

Seeking clarification on whether the child, or indeed anyone of that faith, can be buried at Ballyglass, Minister Troy said he facilitated a meeting with representatives of the Muslim faith.

“The council explained to them that it always has been the position that all faiths are welcome to be buried there. They expressed a wish that, in keeping with their tradition, their graves had to be orientated in a certain way. The council said that wouldn’t be an issue. And that was, that was simply it.”

He said some of the views expressed on his post were “disgusting” and should not be tolerated, especially since this was simply about allowing people of a different faith to bury their loved ones in their own community in line with their own customs.

“I don’t see the issue. I mean, there’s people of different faiths in the world, and we’re all just passing through. Why should somebody be deprived? This is not a Catholic graveyard. It’s a municipal graveyard, owned by the council.”

A statement issued by Westmeath County Council chief executive Barry Kehoe pointed out: “Ballyglass Cemetery is a municipal cemetery owned and managed by Westmeath County Council. It is, and has always been, a non-denominational burial ground, open to all members of the community regardless of faith or denomination.”

Continuing, it said that burials for people of different faiths and backgrounds have taken place there over the course of its operation, consistent with its non-denominational status.

“Westmeath County Council is committed to ensuring that dignified burial provision is available to all residents of the county, in line with its statutory obligations and the inclusive nature of this public facility,” it concluded.

UK agrees drone defence plan with four EU allies

21 February 2026

Paul Seddon

Britain is to develop new air defence weapons alongside the EU's four biggest military powers, deepening ties with the European defence sector.

The project will invite manufacturers in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Poland to submit plans to build low-cost missiles and autonomous drones.

The allies are pledging a speedy process to build the weapons together, inspired by Ukraine's development of cheap drones to counter attacks from Russia.

The UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD) says the programme will prioritise a "lightweight, affordable" surface-to-air weapon, with the first project to be delivered by next year.

The plan, announced at a meeting of the five countries' defence ministers in the Polish city of Krakow, marks a boost to UK-Europe ties after the failure of talks last year over UK participation in the EU's new €150bn (£130bn) defence fund.

Agreement would have allowed British defence companies to play a greater part in joint projects funded by the loans, but negotiations fell apart after the UK rejected a multibillion euro entry fee demanded by the EU.

A budget for the latest drone defence plan has not been confirmed, but Defence Minister Luke Pollard told reporters in Poland that each country was making a "multimillion pound, multimillion euro" commitment to the scheme.

The MoD says it will take inspiration from Ukraine, which has quickly developed a huge domestic drone manufacturing sector since Russia's full-scale invasion of the country four years ago.

Huge numbers of low-cost drones have become a key part in defending the country from Russian attacks that can involve hundreds of attack drones, rendering traditional missile defence systems impractical and costly.

'Economics of warfare'

"To be effective at shooting down relatively low-cost missiles, drones and other threats facing us, we need to make sure that we're matching the cost of the threat with the cost of defence," said Pollard after the meeting.

He added that the drone defence plan agreed on Friday would be the first in a series of initiatives from the group of five allies, known as the E5, to change the "economics of warfare" amid the threat from Russia.

The MoD has not provided a detailed plan for how drones could be developed more quickly, but is pledging to step up co-operation with smaller technology companies and minimise operational requirements for taking part in projects.

Europe is under pressure to increase defence spending in the wake of the Ukraine war and questions over the reliability of the United States as a Nato ally.

The E5 group, which first met in autumn 2024 after Donald Trump's re-election, has now met seven times and has emerged as a key body for boosting European defence co-operation outside the much larger structures of the EU.

Boosting the use of autonomous drones, which can independently identify targets without human control using AI, was a key part of a wide-ranging review of UK military capabilities unveiled in summer last year.

That review saw the MoD commit to developing "more permissive" regulations for such autonomous systems, in a potential shift away from the position that there should always be "context-appropriate human involvement" in weapons.

CAIR-MN Welcomes Sentencing of Man for Arson Attacks on Mosques

February 20, 2026

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and its Minnesota chapter (CAIR-MN) today welcomed the sentencing of a man for acts of arson targeting two Twin Cities mosques.

Jackie Rahm Little, 39, was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to arson and damage to religious property, which is a federal hate crime.

Over the past three years, Minnesota has faced the worst level of mosque attacks in the nation, with more than 40 incidents and over $3 million in damages. Arson has been on the rise, with six separate incidents in recent years, including three serious arsons.

In a statement,CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein said:

“We welcome this sentencing as an important step toward accountability and justice for the targeted Muslim communities. Acts of arson against houses of worship are intended to terrorize entire communities and undermine the fundamental right to religious freedom.

“While no sentence can fully repair the trauma and damage caused by these attacks, this outcome sends a clear message that hate-fueled violence will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We remain committed to working with law enforcement, elected officials, and community partners to ensure the safety and security of all houses of worship across Minnesota.”

He noted that CAIR offers a “Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety” booklet, which offers advice on how to help keep religious facilities safe. The advice in the booklet is applicable to houses of worship of all faiths.

CAIR-MN is the state’s leading Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization. Its mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

Community gathers for Friday prayers during Ramadan in Milford Haven

February 21, 2026

Police visit highlights spirit of unity and support at local Islamic centre

WORSHIPPERS gathered at the Hamad Bin Khalifa Islamic Centre in Milford Haven on Friday (Feb 20) as part of the weekly Jumuah prayers during the holy month of Ramadan.

The mosque has been welcoming members of the local Muslim community for prayers, reflection and community connection during the sacred period, which is observed by millions of people worldwide through fasting, charity and spiritual devotion.

Ramadan is considered one of the most important times in the Islamic calendar, with Muslims fasting from dawn until sunset, increasing acts of charity and focusing on faith, family and community.

As part of wider community engagement efforts, a Police Community Support Officer from the Milford Haven and Neyland neighbourhood policing team attended prayers to show support and build relationships with local residents.

Officers said the visit was intended to demonstrate solidarity and reassurance, particularly during a significant religious period, while strengthening positive links between the police and the community.

The Hamad Bin Khalifa Islamic Centre has played an important role in Milford Haven for many years, serving not only as a place of worship but also as a hub for cultural understanding and community activity.

Local leaders have previously highlighted the value of partnership working between community organisations and public services in promoting cohesion and mutual respect across Pembrokeshire.

The centre is expected to continue hosting regular prayers and gatherings throughout Ramadan, with members of the community coming together each week for worship and fellowship.

Texas Democrats accuse comptroller of excluding Islamic schools from voucher program

February 20, 2026

AUSTIN, Texas - Texas Democrats are claiming acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock is acting outside the scope of the Texas Education Freedom Accounts, or school voucher, law and excluding schools based on religious identity.

In a letter sent Thursday and signed by Democrats in the Texas House and Senate, lawmakers questioned the methods used to exclude Islamic private schools from the TEFA program.

What they're saying:

"The current delay or exclusion of these institutions raises profound concerns, increases legal liability for our state, and imposes an unfair burden to Muslim Texans," the letter from lawmakers reads.

Hancock had previously asked Attorney General Ken Paxton for a legal opinion on the agency's authority to determine the eligibility of certain private schools in the program.

In Paxton's opinion, he wrote that schools can be excluded if they violate the "other relevant laws" provision of Senate Bill 2, which established the TEFA program.

Paxton's opinion came in response to Hancock's question over whether schools that had hosted events for the Council on American-Islamic Relations or had alleged ties to the Chinese government could be banned from the program.

Governor Greg Abbott designated CAIR as a terrorist organization in November. The group has since filed a lawsuit claiming the proclamation is based on "defamatory" and "provably false statements."

Lawmakers said multiple Islamic schools have been denied or removed from TEFA eligibility "despite having no affiliation with CAIR or any designated organization cited in generalized alligations."

"Some schools have publicly reported that they were initially approved and later removed without clear, school-specific notice or articulated factual findings," they said.

"The Attorney General's response did not authorize blanket exclusions," Senate Democrats said in their letter. "Instead, it made it clear that your office has sole authority to make the factual eligibility determinations under the statute."

"We didn't support the voucher program. But since it's here, the state has to follow the law," the Senate Democratic Caucus said on X. "We can't twist the rules to exclude any ethnic or religious group."

Lawmakers are calling on Hancock to implement the program in a way that's "neutral, transparent and consistent with the law."

They said decisions made based on "religion-linked proxies" and "guilt-by-association reasoning" open the state up to violations of equal protection principles, Texas constitutional protections of religious liberty and due process requirements.

"Administrative agencies must operate within the four corners of the statute enacted by the Legislature, not beyond it," Senate Democrats said.

Attorney General Ken Paxton says Comptroller's Office can exclude schools from TEFA

The other side:

Hancock asked the attorney general to weigh in on who could determine if a school is excluded from the TEFA program.

"The people of Texas deserve the highest assurance that no taxpayer dollars will be used, directly or indirectly, to support institutions with ties to a foreign terrorist organization, a transnational criminal network, or any adversarial foreign government," the request said.

In January, Paxton issued an opinion stating the Comptroller's Office has the full authority to prohibit schools under the "other relevant law[s]" provision of Senate Bill 2.

"Let me be crystal clear: Texans’ tax dollars should never fund Islamic terrorists or America’s enemies," Paxton said of the opinion. "The Comptroller’s Office has always possessed exclusive authority under the TEFA framework to stop any school illegally tied to terrorists or foreign adversaries from accessing taxpayer dollars, and this opinion affirms that authority. There is no question that the Comptroller’s Office is statutorily charged with ensuring that our school choice program is protected from abuse by terrorists or the Chinese Communist Party."

While the attorney general's opinions are not legally binding, they are used as guidance by state agencies.

School choice in Texas

The Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 2 in April, carving out $1 billion for the program in its first year.

Most parents who qualify can receive up to nearly $10,500 each year in public money for their child to go to private school.

The program will be capped at 90,000 students statewide. The education savings accounts will be given on a priority scale, so lower-income households and students with special needs will get priority first for the funds.

Applications for students opened on Feb. 4. According to the Comptroller's Office, more than 100,000 students applied in the first two weeks.

Feds announce funds for Muslim youth gang prevention in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick

Feb 20, 2026

By Josh Healey

“The youth are not the problem, they are the promise.”

These words, part of a passionately delivered speech by Ummah Society CEO Abdullah Yousri following the announcement that the federal government was allocating $1.27 million for youth gang prevention, elicited joyous applause.

“What powerful words,” said Halifax MP Shannon Miedema, taking to the podium afterwards.

But Yousri and the Ummah Society, which is the largest Muslim-led charity in Atlantic Canada, are planning to back up those words with action.

Through their project called Gang Busters: Reducing Youth Violence and Gang Involvement, the society will use the federal purse to focus on reducing gang violence among Muslim youth between the ages of 15 and 30 in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. The project is expected to help up to 700 people.

“This investment confirms something powerful. Public safety is not only about enforcement. It’s about prevention, it is about inclusion and it is about belonging. It is about building trust between communities and institutions,” said Yousri.

The Ummah Society, founded in 1984, knows very well about building communities; they actively dedicate themselves to supporting immigrants, Black, Indigenous and marginalized communities across Atlantic Canada. They’ve helped to organize and build a network of mosques, schools and daycares across the region.

Now, they’ll be using those connections to implement new programming made possible through the funding.

“One of the examples I would give is to provide youth the opportunity to have access to counseling services, therapy services, that are culturally and religiously sensitive and speaks to them through their language and will have a diversity of teams to deliver these services to them, which is one of the main components of this project,” said Yousri when asked how the funds will be used.

He also noted that they’re working on creating a training program to help first responders sensitively manage youth from immigrant communities.

Gary Anandasangaree, Canada’s minister of public safety, was also on hand for the announcement and answered questions concerning the scope of the project, noting it would focus on at-risk age groups. Some key risk factors include social isolation, discrimination and economic instability.

“There’s very important rationale for why the 15-to-30-year catchment is critical because, usually within communities, there are different age groups of people who go through some cycles of incidents, or potentially even violence, that are probably in older age groups,” Anandasangaree said.

“What we want to do is catch those who are entering or in high school and those who are out of the system altogether and try and pull them back into the community.”

Funding was made available through Public Safety Canada’s Youth Gang Prevention Fund, which supports community initiatives to help at-risk youth to avoid or exit gangs.

Yousri thanked the federal government and partners for making the program possible but made sure to recognize those they are trying to help.

“To our youth, we believe in you. Your future is bright and we are committed to walking beside you every step of the way,” he said.

“Let this funding mark the beginning of deeper partnerships, innovative programming and measured impact across Atlantic Canada.”

Trump announces new global tariff after losing in US Supreme Court

20 Feb, 2026

US President Donald Trump has announced a new 10% global tariff after the Supreme Court struck down most of the earlier tariffs he had implemented.

In a 6–3 decision on Friday, the highest court ruled that the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not give Trump the authority to impose what he described as reciprocal tariffs against almost every country.

Trump responded by vowing to sign an executive order on Friday using another piece of legislation, the Trade Act of 1974, to impose additional tariffs.

“The Supreme Court did not overrule tariffs, they merely overruled a particular use of IEEPA tariffs,” Trump told reporters. “Now I’m going to go in a different direction, probably the direction that I should have gone the first time,” he said.

Trump denounced the “terrible” court ruling, stating that all of his tariffs remain “in full force and effect.” He labeled the judges who ruled against him as “very unpatriotic and disloyal to our constitution.”

After returning to the White House last year, Trump imposed 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, and later announced a baseline 10% tariff on many other countries he accused of “ripping off” the US. He has wielded trade as political leverage, threatening to enact additional tariffs against European countries that oppose his plan to annex Greenland from Denmark.

The EU has warned that Trump’s tariffs would damage the global economy and ultimately hurt consumers in the US. “The consequences will be dire for millions of people around the globe,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said last year.

US weighs targeting Iranian leaders and ‘regime change’ – Reuters

20 Feb, 2026

The US plans for possible strikes on Iran are at an advanced stage, with options including targeting individual leaders and pursuing regime change, Reuters reported on Friday, citing unnamed American officials.

The plans are being drawn up in case ongoing negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program fail to produce a result, the officials told the agency. Reuters previously reported that the Pentagon was preparing for a sustained, weeks-long operation targeting Iranian security and nuclear sites.

One official said targeted strikes on senior commanders during Israel’s 12-day air war last year against Iran had demonstrated the “utility” of such an approach. The official cautioned that such operations require extensive intelligence to locate targets and assess potential collateral damage.

In June 2025, Israel assassinated dozens of senior Iranian commanders and nuclear scientists, including the army chief of staff and the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of toppling the Iranian government, saying it “seems like that would be the best thing that could happen.” He warned on Thursday that “really bad things” would happen unless Iran surrenders to demands to scrap its nuclear and ballistic-missile programs.

Tensions continue as the Omani-mediated talks held this week in Geneva produced no breakthrough. On Thursday, Trump gave Iran between 10 and 15 days to reach an agreement.

Washington has deployed two aircraft carrier strike groups and additional bombers to the Middle East. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has warned it would retaliate against US bases in the region if its territory is attacked.

Tehran maintains its nuclear program is peaceful. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told MSNBC on Friday that Tehran is working on a draft for a potential new agreement that could be presented to Washington within days. He said a diplomatic solution is the only way forward, while adding that the country is also “prepared for war.”

Moscow has warned that the standoff is “potentially explosive” and that strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites could cause a nuclear disaster, urging all sides to seek a peaceful settlement.

Beauty of Ramadan lies in compassion, generosity - President Mahama

Feb - 20 - 2026

President John Dramani Mahama has underscored the importance of compassion, discipline and generosity as Muslims in Ghana and across the world commence the holy month of Ramadan.

In a message posted on Facebook, to mark the beginning of the sacred period, President Mahama encouraged the faithful to reflect on the core values of Ramadan in their daily lives.

“As you break the fast each evening, with family and friends, remember that the true beauty of Ramadan is not the abstinence from food, but in the discipline, compassion and generosity we show to all, especially those who are less fortunate than us,” he stated.

The President called on Muslims and all Ghanaians to use the month as an opportunity to strengthen social bonds and promote national unity.

“Let us use this holy month to deepen love, peace, and solidarity across the country,” he added.

President Mahama also offered prayers for the well-being of the faithful throughout the fasting period.

“May Allah, the Most Merciful, grant you good health and peace of mind throughout these 30 days of fasting. May your prayers be answered, and your good deeds be accepted,” he said.

Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer and reflection, culminating in the celebration of Eid al-Fitr.

Gov Lawal donates cars to 40 Imams in Zamfara

February 20, 2026

Gov. Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, on Friday, donated cars to 40 Jumma’at Mosque imams as part of the state government’s support for their diligent discharge of religious duties.

Lawal, while presenting the cars, said the gesture was meant to improve their mobility and enhance their preachings and outreaches to communities.

The Governor explained that Zamfara was a state founded on strong Islamic principles, with numerous Imams serving communities across the 14 local government areas.

According to him, supporting the welfare of religious leaders remains a priority of his administration.

“We are constructing mosques and houses for Imams, and we also feel it is important for them to move freely.

‘Mobility is essential, especially for preaching and community engagements.

“That is why we have selected 40 Imams in this first phase to receive vehicles to ease their movement,” Lawal said.

The governor said the initiative would be sustained, stressing that the current donation marked the programme’s first phase.

He charged the clerics to pray for sustainable peace in Zamfara and across the country.

Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Affairs, Sheikh Bello Almufty, described Lawal as a leader committed to truth, justice, and inclusive development.

Almufty said Lawal’s administration had changed the lives of religious leaders, delivering tangible dividends of democracy, including improved welfare packages and allowances for Imams.

Sheikh Atiku Zawiyya, who spoke on behalf of the Imams, commended Lawal for the invaluable support.

Zawiyya said that the donation would strengthen the activities of Imams towards their service to the people.

He prayed to the governor to continue with the gesture, saying that the good deeds  deserved prayers and Allah’s blessings.

The beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the state government, pledging to  promote peace, unity, and moral values across their communities

50 Feared Killed As Bandits Overrun Zamfara Village In Midnight Attack

February 21, 2026

Zamfara State was thrown into mourning on Friday after armed bandits reportedly killed no fewer than 50 residents of Dutsin Dan Ajiya village in Anka Local Government Area.

Bodies of the victims, wrapped in white shrouds, were lined up for mass burial in a video sighted by The PUNCH.

Residents said the attackers, wielding sophisticated weapons, stormed the community on Thursday night and unleashed hours of terror.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, said the gunmen sealed off all access roads to prevent villagers from fleeing before opening fire indiscriminately.

“After blocking all the roads, the bandits started to shoot at sight and the villagers ran helter-skelter,” he said.

“After the attack, we realised that 30 people were killed; some were wounded, while several others are at large and nobody knows their whereabouts.”

However, Reuters quoted a lawmaker representing Bukkuyum South, Hamisu Faru, as saying at least 50 people were killed.

According to Faru, the attackers invaded the village around 5 p.m. on Thursday and continued the onslaught until about 3:30 a.m. on Friday, burning buildings and shooting residents attempting to escape.

“They have been moving from one village to another … leaving at least 50 people dead,” Faru said.

A 41-year-old resident, Abdullahi Sani, disclosed that three members of his family were killed.

“No one slept yesterday, we are all in pain,” he lamented.

Sani added that villagers had alerted security operatives and local authorities after spotting over 150 motorcycles conveying the gunmen, but claimed no help came.

Efforts to reach the Zamfara State Police spokesperson, Yazid Abubakar, were unsuccessful as calls and text messages went unanswered as of press time.

An aide to the governor also promised to respond but had yet to do so when this report was filed.

The attack occurred barely 24 hours after the Zamfara State Government donated Armoured Personnel Carriers and a drone to security agencies to intensify the fight against banditry.

The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa (rtd), who received the equipment, had urged troops to take decisive action against bandits who refused to surrender.

Zamfara remains one of several North-West states grappling with relentless bandit attacks despite sustained military operations.

On Wednesday, suspected Lakurawa terrorists reportedly killed 33 residents in Kebbi State, while five persons were slain in Sokoto State on February 13. In Katsina, 21 residents were killed earlier this month in Faskari Local Government Area.

Reacting to the latest killings, the Executive Director of the Foundation for Peace Professionals, Abdulrazaq Hamzat, dismissed suggestions that the violence represents a resurgence.

Speaking with The PUNCH, he described the attack as a continuation of an entrenched security crisis.

“I do not think it is a resurgence; it is just the continuation of existing insecurity,” he said.

Hamzat criticised the country’s security framework as reactive and overstretched.

“Our security approach has always been about responding to situations as they happen. The security has been overstretched; before they effectively complete an operation in one location, they’re deployed to other places with more pressing demands.”

He called for the decentralisation of policing, insisting that state and local police structures were critical to tackling insecurity in remote communities.

“Without a permanent, localised security presence that understands the terrain and maintains constant vigil, the cycle of killings will continue,” he warned.

Another security expert, Akin Adeyi, urged the Federal Government to abandon defensive tactics and adopt a more aggressive posture against bandits.

He linked the spread of attacks to the December 25, 2025 US strike on bandit camps, which he claimed forced the criminals to disperse into new territories.

“It is terrible that we are having this kind of situation, and that we are not prepared for it is a minus for the government,” Adeyi said.

“It is not that they will just go and sit and rely on repelling attacks. No, it is time for them to be on the offensive now. Anywhere, anytime they gather or receive information about their decision, let them not wait until they attack.”

President Tinubu Sends Strong Message Ahead Of FCT, Kano, Rivers Elections

February 20, 2026

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on voters, security agencies, and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct themselves in an orderly manner during Saturday’s polls in the Federal Capital Territory and the states of Kano and Rivers.

Naija News reports that INEC will conduct elections in the six area councils of the FCT and bye-elections in the Ahoada East II and Khana II State constituencies of Rivers State, and in the Kano Municipal and Ungogo constituencies in Kano State on Saturday, February 21, 2026.

President Tinubu, in a statement on Friday by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, urged all eligible voters to come out and vote without fear, emphasising that the democratic process thrives best in an atmosphere of calm, tolerance, and mutual respect.

He appealed to political parties, candidates, and their supporters to shun violence, inflammatory statements, and actions that undermine the credibility of the process.

He cautioned against any form of high-handedness, intimidation, or actions that could disenfranchise voters or erode public trust, stressing that security personnel are present to protect lives, property, and the sanctity of the ballot.

President Tinubu also appealed to INEC to take all necessary measures to bolster voters’ confidence by ensuring timely accreditation, smooth voting processes, accurate collation, and prompt transmission of results, in line with the 2026 Electoral Act.

“Fellow Nigerians, I assure you that the Federal Government under my administration will continue to support institutions responsible for delivering free, fair, and credible elections.

Naija News reports that the restriction is aimed at ensuring security and the smooth conduct of the polls.

He also announced a separate restriction of movement across the FCT from 8:00pm on Friday to 6:00pm on Saturday, directing security agencies to ensure strict compliance.

France denies deploying troops to DRC, says army is training Congolese forces

February 21, 2026

France has denied deploying troops to the DRC after a photo earlier this week appeared to show French soldiers in Kisangani.

The country’s embassy in Kinshasa said the French army is involved in training Congolese armed forces - known as the FARDC - as part of a standard bilateral cooperation effort, in place since 2022.

The northeastern city of Kisangani is a major hub for the Congolese military’s drone and logistics operations.

The embassy said the French army’s mission is focused on training Congo’s jungle battalions and is expected to continue until the end of next month.

Belgian forces are also training FARDC soldiers as part of the European Peace Facility.

Last year, more than 1,000 FARDC soldiers received training from MONUSCO peacekeepers aimed at protecting civilians from armed groups in Ituri, as well as in North and South Kivu.

Malaysians break fast outdoors to strengthen family and community bonds during Ramadan

20 Feb 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 20 — As the first day of Ramadan coincides with the school holiday season, Muslims took the opportunity to break their fast outdoors with family and friends, further enlivening the spirit of brotherhood during the holy month.

A Bernama survey across several states found that many chose to enjoy iftar (breaking of fast) in a relaxed manner at open spaces and iconic landmarks, while sharing dishes with other visitors to add to the festive atmosphere.

In the FEDERAL CAPITAL, despite the overcast weather at Dataran Merdeka this afternoon, crowds began filling the historic field as early as 6.30 pm to await the Maghrib call to prayer.

Most Muslims here took a picnic-style approach, bringing mats and home-cooked meals, supplemented by various delicacies purchased from nearby Ramadan bazaars.

For Rohani Mahmud, 51, from Alor Setar, Kedah, picnicking in open spaces has become a family tradition, especially since all her children work in the capital.

In TERENGGANU, Dataran Shahbandar, the Drawbridge Square, Kuala Ibai Lagoon, and Batu Buruk Beach were among the popular locations where families gathered to break their fast.

Visitor Nurul Nabila Asyikin Zaizuri, 25, from the Hiliran People’s Housing Project (PPR) here, said she and her husband enjoy breaking fast outdoors because the atmosphere is livelier and allows them to observe the behaviour of a diverse crowd .

“I always have a mat and hand-washing water ready in the car. Since getting married, we have frequently broken our fast at Dataran Shahbandar. If it gets too crowded, we just move to another spot,” she said.

In PENANG, a survey at the Bagan Ajam Rest Area found the popular spot bustling with families, despite rain starting around 6 pm.

Irwan Mohd Noor, 42, who travelled from Sungai Petani, Kedah, with his wife and two children, said they usually break their fast at home but chose to eat out this year to make the most of his day off work.

In PAHANG, crowds did not miss the chance to break their fast surrounded by iconic architecture such as the State Mosque, Mahkota Square, and Kuantan 188 at the Kuantan City Council Field 1.

Private sector employees Nur Fateeha Fahkrul Nizam, 24, and Ainur Safiya Ahmad, 26, when met, said they took the opportunity to break their fast at the location before heading home from work.

While waiting for the Maghrib call to prayer at 7.24 pm, Bernama observed various activities for children, such as playing in inflatable castles and flying kites.

In PERLIS, a survey at the Al Hussain Mosque in Kuala Perlis, near Kangar, found that breaking fast at the floating mosque remains a major attraction for those wishing to enjoy the sunset along the coast.

People began filling the mosque compound at 6.30 pm with their own food, while others bought meals at the bazaar before gathering with family and friends.

Nurliyana Amiruddin, 35, from Kangar, said she and her family chose the mosque for its tranquil atmosphere and stunning sea view.

The situation was slightly different in MELAKA, where popular spots were found to be deserted following rain in most parts of the state since this afternoon, including Dataran Orang Kampung Merlimau, which is typically a favourite spot for families and youths. — Bernama

‘Little change to opposition bloc if PAS gets chairmanship’

21 Feb 2026

International Islamic University Malaysia political analyst and Iseas–Yusof Ishak Institute fellow Assoc Prof Dr Syaza Shukri said PN is already dominated by PAS.

PETALING JAYA: A PAS-led Perikatan Nasional (PN) will not change anything within the coalition as it is already widely perceived to be dominated by the Islamic party, say analysts.

International Islamic University Malaysia political analyst and Iseas–Yusof Ishak Institute fellow Assoc Prof Dr Syaza Shukri said PN is already dominated by PAS.

“So if PAS were to officially lead the coalition, it would largely amount to the status quo,” she told theSun via WhatsApp.

She cautioned that formalising PAS’ leadership could complicate PN’s efforts to appeal to the voters beyond its traditional base.

“The difference is that an officially PAS-led PN may find it even more difficult to convince non-Malay voters to support the coalition. That said, even now, PN’s voter base is predominantly Malay.”

On the question of who might emerge as chairman, Syaza said the situation is not easily predictable.

“I think even within PAS there is recognition that this is not a straightforward decision.”

She said PAS vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, who is seen by some as a technocratic and relatively moderate figure, is the frontrunner to become the next PN chairman.

“The mention of (Terengganu menteri besar) Dr Sam suggests that PAS is aware of its own limitations and knows the importance of projecting a more moderate, technocratic image at the national level.

“The key question is whether the ulama faction will be comfortable with such a figure taking on a central leadership role.”

Nusantara Academy of Strategic Research senior fellow Prof Dr Azmi Hassan said the internal turmoil currently facing Bersatu is unlikely to significantly alter the trajectory of PN.

He said if PAS is formally given the opportunity to lead the coalition, the choice of chairman would be crucial, with Samsuri the likely compromise candidate who could be agreed upon by Bersatu and PAS.

“If PAS takes the chairmanship and someone like Dr Sam leads, it could help ease tensions between PAS and Bersatu.”

Azmi said PAS has strategically leveraged the controversy surrounding Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin to pressure Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to relinquish the PN chairmanship.

By maintaining that Hamzah remains opposition leader, PAS has positioned itself as holding moral and political leverage within the coalition.

“In this situation, PAS can argue that if Bersatu and the other component parties wish to decide on who will be the opposition leader then PAS should be entrusted with the PN chairmanship.

“For PAS, leading PN through the chairmanship is a clear demonstration of dominance.

“ They currently hold political capital by defending and supporting Hamzah as opposition leader. There must be some form of reciprocity in this arrangement.”

Bersatu and PAS have been at odds ever since Bersatu named Muhyiddin as the prime minister candidate at the party’s last annual general assembly.

The relationship strained further following the Perlis menteri besar saga that saw PAS’ own menteri besar was replaced by a Bersatu assemblyman after losing support from the majority of the Perlis state legislative assembly.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil says DAP’s upcoming special congress is an internal party process, with the MADANI Government focused on economic and institutional reforms.

KUALA LUMPUR: The upcoming special congress of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) is part of the party’s internal process to ensure organisational decisions are upheld.

MADANI Government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated that DAP had informed its coalition partners in advance about the congress slated for July 12.

“This is DAP’s internal process to ensure that decisions taken are complied with within the party,” he told reporters after officiating an event here today.

He emphasised it is part of the party’s own decision-making process.

Prior to this, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said the congress would allow delegates to decide whether party office-bearers should relinquish their government posts.

Loke stressed that the party’s 40 Members of Parliament would continue to support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s administration until the end of the term.

According to Fahmi, the MADANI Government’s primary focus remains on strengthening the national economy and advancing institutional reforms.

These efforts include proposing Bills on separating the roles of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor, and on limiting the Prime Minister’s tenure to 10 years.

Both Bills are scheduled for their first reading in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday.

“Our aim is to ensure Malaysia is in the strongest possible position this year,” Fahmi said.

He expressed belief that the government’s efforts are on the right track and that all component parties understand the initiatives being undertaken.

PAS to discuss opposition leader role and PN chairmanship

20 Feb 2026

PAS will decide on taking over the parliamentary opposition leader post and the new PN chairman in key meetings this Sunday, president Abdul Hadi Awang says.

MARANG: The PAS Central Committee will deliberate on whether the party should assume the parliamentary opposition leader position this Sunday.

President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang confirmed the meeting will also discuss the Perikatan Nasional chairmanship.

He stated the party has not yet decided on the opposition leader role following Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin’s expulsion from Bersatu.

“We will discuss this in the PAS meeting,” Abdul Hadi told reporters after a lecture at Masjid Rusila.

He added the meeting would be held this Sunday and include discussions on the PN chairmanship.

An extraordinary PN meeting is scheduled for the same day at the PAS headquarters.

This meeting aims to appoint a new coalition chairman to replace Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin announced his resignation effective January 1.

Abdul Hadi declined to comment on whether Hamzah would join PAS.

He acknowledged separate meetings with both Muhyiddin and Hamzah recently.

“Everyone has met me. Hamzah came to see me, and Muhyiddin did too… each had their own arguments. I listened to both sides,” he said.

Bersatu expelled Hamzah last week for breaching the party’s constitution.

The party’s Disciplinary Board made the decision under Clause 22.5.

Secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali stated Hamzah breached Clause 9.1.4.

'Ekush' freed from fascist rule, opens path to democracy: Fakhrul

21 Feb 2026

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir last night said "Ekush" had remained confined under a fascist regime, but this time it is free, creating an opportunity to build a just and discrimination-free democratic Bangladesh.

“Ekushey had long remained restricted under a fascist rule, but this time it is free. That is why our feelings are somewhat different today as after the election a newly elected BNP government has been formed under the leadership of Tarique Rahman,” he said.

Fakhrul, also local government, rural development and cooperatives minister, made the remarks at the Central Shaheed Minar before paying tributes to the language martyrs, marking Amar Ekushey’—the International Mother Language Day and Shaheed Dibosh.

He said public expectations from the new government have grown immensely following the restoration of democracy.

“We expect to fulfil people’s aspirations in the coming days by building a truly democratic society in Bangladesh based on justice under a democratic government,” Fakhrul said.

He said the core spirit of Ekushey was to build a discrimination-free society and state in Bangladesh.

“On the basis of that spirit we will move forward in the coming days. We believe that with the inspiration of this new Ekushey we will be able to work for people’s welfare, enrich our mother language and culture, and consolidate the independence, sovereignty and democracy of Bangladesh,” Fakhrul added.

No security threat to Ekushey observances: Says DMP chief

21 FEBRUARY 2026

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sazzat Ali yesterday said there is no security threat to today’s observance of Language Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day, with extensive security arrangements in place across the capital.

“Comprehensive preparations are in place to safeguard the Amar Ekushey observances,” he told reporters at the Central Shaheed Minar premises.

Referring to the peaceful 13th parliamentary election, he said security measures and public cooperation had ensured a calm environment, adding that no specific threat had been identified regarding Ekushey.

Despite this, specialised units, including SWAT, dog squad, bomb disposal and crime scene investigators, will remain on standby alongside regular forces. Intelligence surveillance and cyber monitoring have also been intensified under a layered security framework. Around 15,000 police members will be deployed across Dhaka city, he added.

The Central Shaheed Minar will open to the public around 12:40am after the president, prime minister, and other state dignitaries pay tribute. Visitors must enter via Palashi intersection or Jagannath Hall crossing and exit through Ramna crossing towards Doel Chattar or via Chankharpul, he said.

To ensure smooth traffic movement, diversions will be enforced at several entry points to the Dhaka University area from the evening.

Also speaking at the briefing, Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Md Rahman said diversions would be implemented at seven key intersections, with police personnel deployed to guide vehicles and minimise congestion.

At a separate press conference at the same venue, Rab Director General Additional IGP AKM Shahidur Rahman said Rab had taken special security measures nationwide and deployed personnel in coordination with other law enforcement agencies.

Senior DMP officials, including the Detective Branch chief, were present.

Our Dhaka University correspondent contributed to this report.

UN Chief Says India Shows Clean Energy and Industrial Growth Can Advance Together

By Fidel Rahmati

February 21, 2026

UN Chief, António Guterres said India demonstrates that expanding access to clean energy and growing industry can move forward simultaneously.

Writing on X on Friday, Guterres said the world should see this moment as an opportunity for development and growth while accelerating a fair and rapid transition to clean energy for people and the planet.

He stressed that tackling climate change should not be seen as an obstacle to development, but rather as a chance to turn climate imperatives into economic opportunities.

Guterres has previously said the global shift toward clean energy must become “unstoppable,” urging governments to act with urgency and fairness.

India has significantly expanded renewable energy capacity in recent years while maintaining strong industrial and economic growth.

The United Nations has repeatedly called for a just energy transition that balances climate goals with economic development, particularly in emerging economies.

Guterres’ remarks highlight growing international recognition that climate action and economic progress can be pursued together.
