Muslim Names Being Added Against Hindu Homes In The Voter List In Bihar
Sep 08, 2025

How can Hindu homes have names of Muslim voters, ask villagers in this Bihar village. The Election Commission had recently carried out a massive Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, a re-verification of electoral rolls in the state ahead of the upcoming polls.
The complaints came from Mohanpur village in Katesar panchayat, which falls under the Sakra assembly segment in Muzaffarpur.
Rumours, fear and resentment have spread in the village due to Muslim names being added against Hindu homes in the voter list.
People are claiming that this is not a technical error but a big political conspiracy.
The administration has promised to look into the matter.
Ward 6 of Mohanpur is a hub of Hindu homes, but many Muslim names are added to these homes. Most Muslim names are against homes where no one has lived for many years or where there are fewer members in the household.
Under house numbers 36, 37 and 38, names of 15 Muslim voters are registered, while local people say that no Muslim family lives there.
"There are six members in my house number 30, but now a new name Roshan Khatoon, whose husband's name is Mohd Shabir, has been added, whereas there are no Muslims in the village. And yet the name has been added," said Kameshwar Thakur, an elderly man dressed in a white vest and seated on a wooden chair.
Kameshwar Thakur's brother, Umesh Thakur, who no longer lives here, has 11 Muslim names registered in his House Number 50.
More than 100 Muslim names have been added against 20 to 25 families in the village.
In House Number 54, Pawan Thakur lives alone, but now there are eight Muslim names added to the voter list against the same house.
"I live here alone. I have three daughters, but they are all married. My wife died in 2020. Only I live here," said Pawan Thakur.
When asked if he is aware about the addition of new names, he said," We found out yesterday that eight Muslim names have been added to our house. We are surprised how this happened."
"All this has happened as part of a conspiracy," he added.
When the local Booth Level Officer or BLO Renu Kumari was approached regarding the matter, she was seen avoiding the media.

Bangladesh Jamaat-E-Islami: 'Govt Prioritising Music And Dance Over Religious Education, Risking Moral Decline'
Sep 8, 2025

Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar says
-----------
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar has called for cancellation of the recruitment of music and dance teachers at government primary schools, calling instead for the appointment of religious teachers to strengthen students' moral values.
In a statement issued today, Porwar said government primary schools lack specialist teachers for Islamic and moral education, leaving students deprived despite having a syllabus in place.
"This has led to a decline in social and moral values. Intolerance is growing among students, and they are becoming detached from their religious and cultural history and heritage," he said.
Porwar argued that appointing music and dance teachers would worsen the situation.
"It is in no way acceptable to appoint music and dance teachers instead of religious teachers. Music or dance cannot be an essential subject for students. If a family is particularly interested, they can arrange private teaching. But religion is vital for followers of all faiths," he said.
He urged the government and the education adviser to immediately ensure the recruitment of religious teachers in every primary school.
"What is needed now is to build students as ideal and enlightened individuals in light of moral and religious values. But instead of doing so, the government is encouraging students towards moral degradation and creating an immoral society," Porwar added.
According to him, demands for religious teachers have been raised repeatedly, but no steps were taken.
"Rather, initiatives have been taken to appoint teachers to teach dance, music, and instruments, which we consider regrettable and irrational," he said.
He also stressed that religious education is essential not only for Muslims but also for children of all faiths in Bangladesh.
"But in this recruitment plan, the government has sidelined religious education and given importance to music and dance, which experts believe will produce morally degraded and people of low character in the future," he said.

Islamic Emirate Ministries Holds Meetings to Explain Supreme Leader’s Decree on Eliminating Harmful Social Customs
September 9, 2025

KABUL: The Ministries of Information and Culture organized public gatherings to explain Decree No. 17 issued by the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Emirate aimed at eliminating harmful social customs.
These sessions brought together government officials, media representatives, tribal elders, poets, writers, cultural figures, and youth, who were briefed on the decree’s intent to discourage inappropriate practices in social and family gatherings such as weddings, funerals, and celebrations following Hajj and Umrah, the ministry said in a statement on Monday.
Provincial officials stated that obeying the IEA’s Leader directives is both a religious and social responsibility, stressing that community-wide cooperation is essential in addressing outdated and burdensome traditions.
“Eliminating harmful customs is a critical need, as such practices have created economic hardships, cultural stagnation, and social challenges,” the statement quoted them as saying.
According to the statement, all participants pledged to support the decree’s implementation, expressing their readiness to work with authorities to promote simpler, more faith-aligned social practices in Afghan society.

Arab foreign ministers denounce Israeli threat to displace Palestinians
September 09, 2025

RIYADH: The Foreign Ministers of the Arab-Organization of Islamic Cooperation Committee on Gaza on Monday rejected all statements made by Israeli authorities about displacement, under any pretext, of the Palestinian people from their territories, which have been occupied since 1967.
The ministers condemned Israel’s policy of uprooting Palestinians through military operations in Gaza, the use of siege and starvation as methods of war, and the deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure. They warned that such practices risk prolonging and widening the conflict, thereby posing “a direct threat to regional and international peace and security.”
The ministers also denounced Israeli actions in the occupied West Bank, including settlement expansions, settler violence, home demolitions and land confiscations, describing them as flagrant violations of international humanitarian law. They said those responsible for such actions should be held accountable for crimes that could amount to ethnic cleansing and genocide.
They reiterated their call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and demanded that Israel lift restrictions on humanitarian access via all routes and border crossings.
They also urged the international community to back the return of the Palestinian Authority to Gaza in support of state-building efforts.
Israel’s practices contravene international law, the UN Charter and the rules-based international order, the ministers added. They called on the UN Security Council to protect Palestinians, guarantee their right to remain in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and to end Israel’s “illegal occupation.”
The establishment of a Palestinian state, based on the June 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, remains the only viable solution to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians consistent with human rights, the right to self-determination, and international resolutions, they said.

Poll Booth Proposal At a Kerala Mosque: Political Party Moves HC against State Election Commission
September 08, 2025
The Twenty20 party has challenged before the Kerala High Court the Kizhakkambalam panchayat’s reported proposal to have a polling booth at a mosque in Kummanodu ward for the upcoming local body elections.
In its plea, the party says that readying of polling stations inside religious places is in violation of a circular issued by the State Election Commission. Its intent was to avoid giving the impression that the election process was being influenced by a particular religion. The plea further said that the readying of polling booths at religious places would indirectly influence voters, in favour of a candidate or political party associated with that particular religion. There was also a chance for communal disputes during sensitives times like elections and it would be preferable to choose neutral places like schools or government buildings for the same. This was critical to preserve neutrality, voter confidence and communal harmony, it said.
The party said that there were violent incidents during the 2020 local body polls and that its members were brutally attacked on the premises of the polling station set up in the mosque.
Subsequently, a Bench of Justice C.S. Dias told the State Election Commission to file its statement in the case and posted the case for hearing on September 15.

After Arrests And Separation, Ghaziabad Interfaith Couple Faces Fresh Blow — Police Order Husband To Leave District For 6 MonthsUP assembly reinstates NDA’s lone Muslim MLA: Abbas Ansari regains Mau Sadar; SBSP tally rises to six
Sep 9, 2025
LUCKNOW: The UP assembly on Monday restored the membership of Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party MLA Abbas Ansari, 18 days after Allahabad high court overturned his conviction in a 2022 hate speech case. Abbas, MLA from Mau Sadar, is the son of late gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari who died in Banda jail in 2024.
Principal secretary, Vidhan Sabha, Pradeep Dubey, in an order issued Monday evening said Abbas membership was deemed restored as the high court had suspended his conviction. The order said the cancellation of his membership stood "ineffective" under article 191 of the Constitution, read with section 8 of the Representation of People's act, 1951. Abbas was disqualified as MLA in May this year after a special court in Mau sentenced him to two years imprisonment for a hate speech. He was found guilty under Section 153-A (promoting enmity between groups), Section 189 (threat to public servant), Section 506 (criminal intimidation) and 171F (undue influence during elections) of the Indian Penal Code. He was also fined Rs 2,000. His election agent, Mansopor Ansari, who was also present on the stage during the speech, was also sentenced to six months jail.
Abbas moved the appellate court, which dismissed his challenge on July 5. He subsequently approached the Allahabad high court which quashed the conviction.
The Supreme Court had granted interim bail to Abbas Ansari in Mar this year in a case under the Gangsters Act.
The controversy arose after Abbas delivered a speech during the 2022 assembly elections, allegedly warning the govt officials of the consequences if Samajwadi Party came to office. SBSP was an ally of the SP during the 2022 assembly polls though it later joined the BJP govt.
"I have told SP chief Akhilesh Yadav that after (SP) govt formation no transfer or posting of bureaucrats will be done for six months. First there will be a `hisab-kitab' (scores will be settled), only then will transfer take place," he is reported to have said.
Following restoration of Ansari's membership, the strength of SBSP will increase to six again. Abbas is again the lone Muslim MLA in the BJP-led NDA camp in UP. SBSP chief OP Rajbhar is a minister in the Yogi cabinet.

Odisha Farmers Seek Police Action Against Cow Vigilantes
Subhashish Mohanty
09.09.25
A six-member delegation of the Odisha Milk Farmers’ Association on Monday submitted a memorandum to the director-general of police, seeking urgent intervention to curb the rising attacks on dairy farmers by cow vigilantes.
The association warned that it would gherao the Odisha Legislative Assembly on September 18 if police failed to arrest the culprits involved in the recent assaults and compensate farmers for the death of three calves.
Association president Rabi Behera said: “We submitted a memorandum addressed to DGP Y.B. Khurania through commissioner of police S. Dev Datta Singh. We are demanding the arrest of those involved in the attacks on beneficiaries of the Mukhyamantri Kamadhenu Yojana on August 28 and September 6. Because of police inaction, beneficiaries are now afraid to travel outside the state to purchase quality cows. The entire dairy sector could collapse if these vigilante groups are not controlled.”
Behera pointed out that police had so far arrested only three persons, even though a mob of 50 to 60 persons had attacked the farmers. “We demand the immediate arrest of all goons involved in the assaults at Baramunda on August 28 and at Palasuni on September 6. If strong action is not taken, the Kamadhenu Yojana, a flagship programme of the state government, will fail. No milk producer will opt for it,” he said.
The attacks occurred when farmers were returning from Andhra Pradesh with cows purchased under the scheme. Eight dairy farmers were injured in two separate incidents.
Behera further urged the state government to form a task force involving veterinary officials, the Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers Federation, police and farmers’ representatives, with a nodal officer as convener. “The chief minister, who envisions a vibrant Odisha through rural development and enhanced milk production, should personally intervene and direct police to act. The government must also compensate farmers for the death of three calves,” he said.

Demolition around 500-year-old Delhi dargah: ‘Waqf board’s stand ‘in stark contrast to earlier report’, says Delhi HC
by Sohini Ghosh
September 8, 2025
Noting the Delhi Waqf Board’s contrary stance on the legality of the demolition of structures around a centuries-old dargah in Nizamuddin, the Delhi High Court has sent the matter back to the Delhi government’s Religious Committee for consideration.
The Religious Committee, constituted under the government’s Home Department, is mandated to deal with the demolition of unauthorised religious structures on public land — which has the nature of encroachments — when proposals are forwarded to the committee by land-owning agencies.
The HC was dealing with a petition objecting to the demolition of structures by civic authorities around the waqf property of the nearly 500-year-old Hazrat Bhure Shah dargah near Nizamuddin. The dargah is situated at Amir Khusro Park opposite Masjid Chakkar Wali, Neela Gumbad.
Justice Sachin Datta, however, recorded in an order on September 4 that the stand taken by the Delhi Waqf Board before the Delhi HC now “is in stark contrast to its stand reflected in the earlier inspection report” filed by the body in 2023.
In a petition by Yusuf Baig, mutawalli (caretaker) of the dargah, it was contended that the dargah has existed for 500 years and that the dargah, as well as the land around it, was notified as Waqf land in the Delhi Gazette on December 30, 1976.
According to Baig, the Public Works Department (PWD) demolished a structure of the dargah on April 1, 2023, in preparation for the G20 Summit, without any prior notice. He was also seeking Rs 10 lakh as damages for the unlawful demolition, which the Delhi HC has now refused.
Nineteen days later, following the allegations by the dargah, the Delhi HC had ordered an inspection of the premises by representatives of the PWD, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Southeast Delhi District Magistrate, Land & Building Office (L&DO), and the Waqf Board.
In a compiled inspection report submitted before the court in July 2023, all but the Waqf Board had ruled that the dargah falls in the right-of-way of Mathura road and is an encroachment over public land.
The Waqf Board, on the other hand, had said: “The old record of Waqf property in question clearly shows that there was no encroachment by the said Dargah and the impugned demolition has been carried out unlawfully, causing serious damage to the Waqf property in question.”
The religious committee meeting in July 2023 recorded that the alleged encroachments are structures like qabars (graves) without a boundary wall, which hinders the movement of pedestrians. It had recommended at the time that “the qabars/mazars in question may be relocated to another suitable place as they are bang on the footpath”.
On May 8 this year, the Waqf Board changed its stance.
Referring to the 2023 meeting, it said the recommendations of the religious committee to clear the structures “is fair, balanced and reflect a sensitive yet practical approach”. It also told the court that “there is no record available with the Delhi Waqf Board indicating the existence of any authorised rooms or permanent structures at the site in question”. It admitted that there is no map in the gazette notification about the said mazaar, “leading to confusion over the precise location and boundaries of the said Waqf land on the ground”.
Disposing of the plea, Justice Datta recorded: “In the circumstances, this court remands the matter back to the Religious Committee to consider the matter in the light of the intervening developments in the aftermath of its meeting held on 17.07.2023 and take a considered decision in the matter. The Religious Committee shall consider the stand/version of the authorities (including the Delhi Waqf Board) as also the stand of the petitioner (Baig)…”

NIA raids 22 locations across 6 states in terror conspiracy probe
Imran Ahmed Siddiqui
09.09.25
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday conducted searches at 22 locations across five states and Jammu and Kashmir in connection with the agency’s probe into a terror conspiracy case, officials said.
Sources said the coordinated operation began early morning and covered Bihar (8 locations), Karnataka (1), Maharashtra (1), Tamil Nadu (1), Uttar Pradesh (2), and Jammu and Kashmir (9).
The case under investigation pertains to a terror conspiracy, the recruitment of youths, the raising of funds and the establishment of sleeper cells for carrying out unlawful activities in different parts of the country.
“The case is related to the planning and conspiracy to carry out violent terrorist acts in Jammu and Kashmir and other major cities, including New Delhi. It was planned by cadres of the banned terrorist organisations Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen,” said an official.
The suspects, the official said, were engaged in radicalising individuals associated with the JeM, and had also disseminated terrorist-related propaganda and radicalised and recruited youths into the Jamaat outfit inspired by the JeM. These suspects were involved in motivating youths into committing violent terror attacks across India, the probe has revealed.
During the searches, officials examined several residential premises and business establishments suspected to be linked to individuals associated with radical groups. Investigators are believed to have seized gadgets, digital records, incriminating documents and communication devices, which will now undergo forensic and
technical analysis.

Abbas Ansari’s Uttar Pradesh Assembly membership restored after Allahabad HC reprieve from hate speech case
Namita Bajpai
09 Sep 2025
LUCKNOW: Around 18 days after the suspension of his conviction by the Allahabad High Court in a 2022 hate speech case, Mau Sadar MLA, Abbas Ansari’s membership was restored in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Monday.
Abbas had contested the 2022 Assembly polls from the Mau Sadar seat on the symbol of OP Rajbhar-led Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), which was then in alliance with the Samajwadi Party.
A senior official confirmed the restoration of Abbas Ansari’s membership in the state Assembly.
He is the son of late gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari, who died while undergoing treatment at Ranu Durgawati Medical College in Tindwara during his incarceration in Banda jail in 2024.
Principal secretary, Vidhan Sabha, Pradeep Dubey, in an order issued on Monday evening, said Abbas' membership was deemed restored as the High Court had suspended his conviction.
The order said the cancellation of his membership stood “ineffective” under Article 191 of the Constitution, read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People's act, 1951.
Abbas was sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment in May this year, in a three-year-old hate speech case, leading to his disqualification from the membership of the House.
A special Mau court had held Abbas Ansari, 33, guilty under Section 153-A (promoting enmity between groups), Section 189 (threat to public servant), Section 506 (criminal intimidation) and 171F (undue influence during elections) of the Indian Penal Code. He was also fined Rs 2,000.
His election agent, Mansopor Ansari, who was also present on the stage during the speech, was also sentenced to six months' jail.
Abbas then moved the appellate court, which dismissed his challenge on July 5. He subsequently approached the Allahabad high court, which quashed the conviction.
The controversy arose after Abbas delivered a speech during the 2022 assembly election campaign, allegedly warning the government officials of the consequences if the Samajwadi Party came to office.
“I have told SP chief Akhilesh Yadav that after the SP government formation, no transfer or posting of bureaucrats will be done for six months. First, there will be a `hisab-kitab’ (scores will be settled), only then will transfer orders be released,” he had said, and the video of his speech had gone viral on social media.
Following the restoration of Ansari’s membership, the strength of SBSP will increase to six again.
Abbas is again the lone Muslim MLA in the BJP-led NDA camp in UP.
SBSP chief OP Rajbhar is a minister in the Yogi cabinet. On August 20, the High Court suspended the conviction of Ansari, saying “refusal to stay his conviction amounts to injustice not only to him but also to the electorate which elected him”.

Omar seeks apology from Andrabi, Mehbooba approaches police to file FIR against waqf chair
Sep 9, 2025
SRINAGAR: While Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah reiterated on Monday that J&K Waqf Board should not have placed a plaque inside the Hazratbal shrine, former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said she would approach a court if the police did not register an FIR against J&K Waqf Board chairperson Darakhshan Andrabi.
“They (Waqf Board) have not acknowledged their first mistake, of installing a plaque in the shrine, nor have they apologised for it. When people’s sentiments came to the fore, the administration’s anger was directed at them instead. First of all, we need answers for the act that led to this situation. What was the need to install that plaque there? The present structure of the Hazratbal shrine was created by Sheikh Abdullah, and you will not find his plaque anywhere,” Omar said.
According to NC’s Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah, Jammu and Kashmir police have detained more than 30 people for allegedly defacing a plaque bearing the National Emblem inside Kashmir’s most revered shrine on Friday. Police have not issued any statement on the detentions so far.
PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said her party would approach Hazratbal police station for the registration of an FIR against Andrabi for allegedly hurting the sentiments of Muslims by placing a plaque with the National Emblem inside the shrine. In a post on X, the former CM claimed PDP had approached “Nigeen police station” to file an FIR “but it was denied”. “I urge @JmuKmrPolice to initiate an FIR immediately given the gravity of the offence — deliberately hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims, thereby provoking them,” Mehbooba said. Her daughter, PDP representative Iltija Mufti, claimed, “Laws in Kashmir are being turned upside down on their head by being applied inversely. Instead of filing an FIR against the waqf chairperson for wilfully hurting religious sentiments of Muslims, police have caved in to her threatening orders by booking 50 civilians. No accountability for her hurtful irresponsible actions.”
Andrabi, at the centre of controversy, is visiting shrines. On Sunday evening she visited Aasar-e-Sharif Jinab Sahib Soura Shrine Srinagar. After the visit she wrote on X, “Prayed for peace and harmony for all. Took stock of the ongoing construction works at the shrine campus, including the new grand mosque. Also reviewed facilities for devotees.”
At the mausoleum of NC founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah on the latter’s 43rd death anniversary, NC politicians, including education minister Sakina Itoo, said the FIR in the case should be withdrawn and all “detainees should be released”. The minister sought action against the Waqf Board for “misusing the National Emblem”.
J&K BJP spokesman Sajid Yousuf Shah said “whatever has happened at the Hazratbal shrine is debatable, whether a plaque with the National Emblem should have been there or not. But attacking the emblem and disrespecting the shrine is condemnable.” “Those who committed this heinous act are backed by political parties to divert public attention to hide their failures.” He said he expected “harsh punishment” for the culprits, “including those glorifying and shielding them”, and demanded that those who had “vandalised the Ashoka emblem must be booked under the PSA (J&K Public Safety Act).”

Islamic finance must leverage climate action, digital inclusion and innovation
theSun Local
2025-09-08
KUALA LUMPUR: Islamic finance must leverage three key drivers to serve a higher purpose for Malaysia, Oman and the global community.
Securities Commission chairman Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi identified climate action, digital inclusion and Islamic innovation as essential strategic priorities.
He emphasised that finance must transcend mere profit-making through frameworks like Malaysia’s Maqasid Al-Shariah Guidance and Oman’s Vision 2040.
Climate resilience has become a national priority for Malaysia following devastating 2021 floods that caused RM6.1 billion in losses.
Malaysia secured a 2.8 million euro grant from the Green Climate Fund this year to develop its National Adaptation Plan.
Mohammad Faiz praised Oman’s environmental initiatives including its Blue Carbon project with 100 million mangroves and the Wadi Dayqah Dam for water security.
Malaysia’s Islamic fintech sector is thriving with an industry valuation of USD 13 billion in 2024 and projected near-doubling by 2028.

Anwar says governance must rest on transparency, accountability and trust
By Anis Zalani
09 Sep 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said that confidence in governance must be built on transparency, accountability and trust, backed by strong checks and balances.
Speaking at the Asian Confederation of Institutes of Internal Auditors (ACIIA) Conference, Anwar stressed that power must always be matched with responsibility, with auditors playing a key role in safeguarding institutions, markets and societies.
“There must be no question of our ability to act and prevail. Transparency, accountability and trust are the foundations that allow institutions to endure when tested.
“This is why checks and balances are not optional. Power must always be matched by responsibility, and authority by accountability,” he said.
Anwar also said Malaysia’s ambition is to move closer towards high-income status and become one of the world’s most competitive economies.
However, he cautioned that such ambitions cannot be sustained without confidence in institutions, with auditors in both the public and private sectors central to safeguarding trust.
“That is why the mandate of the National Audit Department, led by the Auditor General, has been strengthened through the first amendment to the Audit Act in 33 years. It may not have been a glamorous reform, but it was an essential one.
“A Serious Irregularities Committee was also established to deal swiftly with critical breaches. Again, it did not make front-page news, but it goes to the heart of the matter: holding offenders to account and protecting public funds,” he said.
Since 2024, Anwar said follow-up audits have recovered and safeguarded RM159 million in public funds.
Earlier this year, four new auditing guidelines were introduced to extend oversight to all entities receiving public money. He said this “follow the public money” approach was aimed at curbing leakages and corruption.
“We must see governance not as a burden but as a strategic asset, the anchor of credibility in our markets, the magnet for investment, and the guarantee that progress will be shared fairly,” he said.

Perak Opposition pushes for Razman’s early return to state assembly
By John Bunyan
09 Sep 2025
IPOH, September 9 — Perak Opposition whip Datuk Seri Zainol Fadzi Paharudin today submitted a motion in the state legislative assembly to shorten the six-month suspension of Gunung Semanggol assemblyman Razman Zakaria.
Zainol filed the motion an hour before the assembly convened, arguing that the punishment imposed on Razman was too harsh for a first-time offence, especially after he had already apologised.
“The statement made by Razman was never intended to incite racial hatred or hurt any party,” Zainol said at a press conference.
“Moreover, he has already apologised in the assembly and before the rights and privileges committee.”
Razman, who also serves as the Perak PAS commissioner, was suspended from the Assembly for six months on April 16.
The suspension stemmed from a motion tabled by DAP’s Bercham assemblyman, Ong Boon Piow, who accused Razman of making slanderous and racially charged remarks.
The remarks were made during a sitting on Dec 2, where Razman alleged that Malaysian citizens had raised Chinese national flags at an event in Teluk Intan.
Last week, Perak Speaker Datuk Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid confirmed that under the current suspension, Razman could only return to the assembly during the next meeting in November.
Zainol, the Sungai Manik assemblyman, argued that the suspension, which officially ends on Oct 16, has undermined Razman’s role as Opposition Leader in scrutinising the government and debating legislation.
“Voters in Gunung Semanggol have effectively lost their representative in the assembly, raising questions about their right to be represented,” he said, noting that the assembly only sits two or three times a year, making it the primary platform to raise the people’s concerns.

Ismail Sabri, ex-political aide will not contest MACC bid to forfeit RM169 million cash
08 Sep 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 — The Sessions Court was informed today that former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and his former political secretary, Datuk Mohammad Anuar Mohd Yunus, will not challenge the prosecution’s application to forfeit more than RM169 million in cash seized by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
MACC Deputy Public Prosecutor Mahadi Abdul Jumaat told the court this during the case mention before Judge Suzana Hussin.
Mahadi said that both respondents (Ismail Sabri and Mohammad Anuar), through their lawyers, had sent a letter dated Aug 28, to the court to convey their position.
“We are requesting that a third-party gazette under Section 41(2) of the MACC Act 2009 be issued for this application. We will try to expedite the process,” he said.
Meanwhile, lawyer Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, representing Ismail Sabri and Mohammad Anuar, confirmed the contents of the letter.
Suzana allowed the prosecution’s request to gazette a notice to third parties with an interest in the cash and set Oct 1 for the next case mention.
Amer Hamzah also requested that both respondents be excused from the proceedings, a request the prosecution did not oppose.
Meanwhile, Mahadi told Bernama that if no third parties appear at the Oct 1 proceedings, the RM169 million will be forfeited to the government.
On July 7, MACC applied to forfeit over RM169 million in cash allegedly belonging to Ismail Sabri, seized from Mohammad Anuar, to the Malaysian government, which includes RM14,772,150 in Malaysian currency; SGD6,132,350 in Singapore Dollars, USD1,461,400 in US Dollars, CHF 3 million in Swiss Francs, EUR12,164,150 in Euros, JPY363,000,000 in Japanese Yen, GBP50,250 in British Pound, NZD44,600 in New Zealand Dollars, AED34,750,000 in Emirati Dirham, and AUD352,850 in Australian Dollars.
The application was made under Section 41(1) of the MACC Act 2009 after the commission was satisfied that the money kept by Mohammad Anuar belonged to Ismail Sabri and was linked to an offence under Section 36(2) of the same Act.
MACC had summoned Ismail Sabri several times for recording sessions regarding the asset declarations he made to the commission.
It also seized RM170 million in cash in various foreign currencies and 16 kg of gold bars, estimated to be worth RM7 million, in connection with the corruption and money laundering investigation involving the Bera MP.
The seizure came after raids on residences and offices believed to be used as “safe houses,” linked to the investigation of four of Ismail Sabri’s senior aides detained in February.

APC Drags Makinde Over ₦300 Billion Loan Says Governor Pushing State Into Debt
September 9, 2025
By Justina Otio
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State on Monday has declared support for the opposition lawmaker in the state House of Assembly challenging the approval of a ₦300bn loan for Governor Seyi Makinde.
Shittu, who represents Saki West constituency on the APC platform, claimed that the loan was passed without the required two-thirds majority of lawmakers.
He also alleged that he was deliberately excluded from the sitting where the approval was granted, describing it as a “secret process.”
Addressing a crowd of party supporters during a peaceful protest in Ibadan, the state APC chairman, Olayide Abas, said the demonstration was organised to show solidarity with Shittu, who has reportedly received threats since raising the alarm.
“We are here to show our support for him for taking the bold step to stand against the loan. We are behind him. We are telling the governor not to plunge Oyo into perpetual debt,” Abas said, adding that the party was dissatisfied with what it described as mismanagement of funds by the Peoples Democratic Party administration
The protest, which began at the APC secretariat in Oke-Ado and moved through significant parts of the city before ending at Mokola Roundabout, also featured criticisms of the governor’s borrowing record. Abas argued that the rising debt profile was unnecessary given recent increases in federal allocations.
But the PDP in the state defended Makinde. In a statement, its publicity secretary, Michael Ogunsina, maintained that the loan approval was legitimate and in the state’s interest.
“There is nothing wrong in what the governor did. Oyo is on the path to prosperity,” he said, dismissing the APC’s protest as a sign of political immaturity.

Strike: FG Begs For Peace As Minister Holds Meeting With NUPENG
September 8, 2025
By Oladipo Abiola
The federal government on Monday, engaged the officials of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) in a meeting as part of efforts to avert a planned strike.
The federal government delegation was led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, while NUPENG’s representatives were led by its President and General Secretary, Williams Akporeha, and Olawale Afolabi, respectively.
Naija News reports that the meeting, which was initially scheduled for 10:00 am on Monday, did not start until 5:22pm.
The meeting became necessary when the petroleum workers under NUPENG’s umbrella scheduled a strike over a dispute with the Dangote Group.
The dispute borders on the company’s policy against allowing its employees to join trade unions, with NUPENG insisting that no oil worker will work with Dangote group without being unionised.
Speaking before the Monday meeting at the headquarters of the Labour and Employment Ministry went into a closed-door session, Dingyadi appealed to all stakeholders to embrace peace.
He expressed confidence that all issues would be resolved amicably, adding that the oil industry is critical to the operation and survival of the entire economy.
He said, “We are here to try and reconciliate our labour unions in the oil industry and the employers in Dangote Group. This is not the first time we are having this kind of dispute.
“We believe that by the time we sit down with parties involved, we should be able to settle them, we should be able to resolve the issues within the limits of what is possible.
“We believe that the gentlemen who are here with today will assist us because I can see the level of commitment in them to see that we resolve these issues.
“We want to appeal to all parties concerned to this meeting to please try to be peaceful, to please try to be as accommodating as possible so that it’s only when we are able to accommodate each others views that we can reach an agreement.
“What we are discussing today is very important to the peace and stability of the country and our economy. The oil industry is not a sector that we will play with and it is very important for the government of our country and our people.
“Please, I want to appeal to all of us to try as much as possible to have a listening ear and ready to contribute to deliberation on this matter.”

El-Rufai Petitions PSC, Accuses Kaduna Police Of Misconduct
September 8, 2025
By Richard Ogunsile
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has petitioned the Police Service Commission (PSC), accusing senior officers of the Kaduna State Police Command of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
In a petition dated September 8, 2025, El-Rufai alleged that the Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State and some officers had engaged in acts he described as “unlawful and unconstitutional.”
The former governor, in the petition, said he was acting in his capacity as a citizen and demanded urgent action from the PSC.
“I am writing as a citizen of Nigeria and former governor of Kaduna State to formally lodge this complaint and demand an immediate, impartial, and exhaustive investigation into the unlawful and unconstitutional conduct of the Commissioner of Police and some officers of the Kaduna State Police Command,” El-Rufai wrote.
The petition comes against the backdrop of a worsening face-off between El-Rufai and the Kaduna Police Command.
On August 30, 2025, the former governor and some opposition politicians were reportedly attacked by suspected political thugs during a meeting in Kaduna.
El-Rufai accused police officers of colluding with the thugs, claiming they stood by and watched while the attack was carried out.
Amid the controversy, reports last week indicated that the Kaduna State Police Command had invited El-Rufai and six senior members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for questioning.
Naija News reports that they are being investigated over alleged offences including criminal conspiracy, incitement of public disturbance, mischief, and causing grievous hurt.
El-Rufai, however, maintains that the real misconduct lies within the police command itself, insisting that only a transparent investigation by the PSC would restore public confidence.
As of press time, neither the PSC nor the Kaduna Police Command had issued an official response to the petition.

‘We Don’t Deserve Such Neglect’ – Bandits Attack Escalates As Kaduna Residents Cry Out
September 8, 2025
Residents of Kachia Local Government Area in Kaduna State have expressed worry over what they described as underreporting of consistent bandit attacks and kidnappings in the area.
In a statement signed by Rev. Fr. Agbo Gabriel, the community urged major media houses to take notice.
They expressed frustration that despite enduring more than two years without consistent electricity, and relying on solar power where possible, the security challenges in Kachia and surrounding villages have largely gone unreported.
The community disclosed that in the early hours of Sunday, September 7, 2025, bandits attacked Wakeh village in Agunu District, killing eight people, injuring many others, and burning homes and property.
According to the statement, the attacks have similarly affected Ankwa, Bishini, Katari, and other villages, leaving communities displaced, traumatised, and in despair.
“The poor people of Kachia town, who used to host internally displaced persons from surrounding villages, are now themselves being targeted,” Rev. Fr. Gabriel said.
“Kidnappings from farms and homes are happening daily, yet media coverage remains virtually absent. We are forced to ask: where are the correspondents or reporters of major media houses in Kaduna and Kachia?”
They appealed to Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State to urgently address the insecurity in Kachia LGA, highlighting the area’s potential and importance to the state.
Residents also called for stronger community-based surveillance, engagement of local leaders, and collective action to protect vulnerable villages.
The community emphasised that local vigilance is critical at this time, urging residents to report suspicious activities and support one another in defending their communities.
“Kachia is a land of great potential and does not deserve such neglect,” the statement concluded. “Media houses, we need your attention. Kachia too exists.”

DRC: Hundreds of protesters gather in Uvira to demand General Gasita's removal
September 8, 2025
Hundreds of protesters on Monday responded to a call from civil society to take to the streets of Uvira, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Citizens protested the recent appointment of General Olivier Gasita Mukunda as deputy commander of the 33rd military region of the DRC’s Armed Forces (FARDC).
Protesters demanded Gasita's removal, accusing him of having collaborated with the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels during the seizure of Bukavu last February.
"We were sent an officer we do not agree with, General Olivier Gasita. He has a very bad track record in Bukavu," protester Dunia Prince told Africanews.
"He does not have the trust of the people, which is why together with the population, we have stood up to demand his removal," he added.
Waving banners, signs, and national flags, demonstrators chanted slogans against General Gasita before submitting a memorandum to the local authorities addressed to the President Félix Tshisekedi.
Located in South-Kivu, Uvira is currently under the control of a coalition formed by the FARDC and Wazalendo militias.
Mapenzi Manyebwa, the president of the Uvira Civil Society Synergy, fear that Gasita's appointment is a sign that authorities are willing to "hand over the city to the rebels."
Police and the army oversaw the march, which proceeded peacefully until warning shots were fired during the demonstration’s dispersal, causing panic.
Civil society reports at least four deaths and several injuries, a toll not yet confirmed by local authorities.
The FARDC had already called for calm last weekend, warning against any manipulation orchestrated by enemies and reaffirming their support for the contested officer.

Six Afghan Migrants Killed in Iranian Border Shooting, Haal-Wash Reports
By Fidel Rahmati
September 9, 2025
Human rights group Haal-Wash said Iranian border guards opened fire on Afghan migrants in Sistan-Baluchestan, killing six, injuring five, and detaining forty, sparking concerns over rights abuses.
According to the report, the guards fired on a group of nearly 120 Afghan migrants, which included women and children, without issuing any prior warning. Witnesses alleged that heavy firearms were used, and the shooting began suddenly as the migrants attempted to cross the border.
Among the wounded who were transferred to Saravan Hospital are Ehsanullah Tajik, Nasrullah Barekzahi, Hezbollah Barekzahi, Vai Barekzahi, and Bashir Ahmad Barekzahi. Three of them remain in critical condition. Haal-Wash further stated that the bodies of those killed were left behind at the site of the incident.
Neither Iranian officials nor the Taliban authorities in Kabul have issued any statement regarding the attack. The silence has drawn criticism, as similar incidents in the past have also gone unacknowledged by both governments.
Last year, rights groups reported another large-scale shooting, in which Iranian forces opened fire on a group of more than 300 Afghan migrants in the Saravan border region, leaving many dead or injured. That episode prompted international concern but little accountability.
The latest killings highlight the vulnerability of Afghan migrants, who continue to face abuse, detention, and violence while seeking refuge across the Iranian border. Such actions, carried out against unarmed civilians, raise serious questions about compliance with international humanitarian norms.
It is now urgent that a transparent and impartial investigation be conducted. Without accountability and stronger protections for migrants, these cross-border tragedies are likely to recur, deepening the suffering of Afghan refugees.

Ex-secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam arrested in 'Mancha 71' terrorism case
09 Sep 2025
Former secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam has been arrested in the same anti-terrorism case that earlier saw former Awami League Presidium member Abdul Latif Siddique sent to jail on charges of “anti-government conspiracy”.
In a statement on Tuesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police said Bhuiyan, along with seven other leaders and activists of the now-banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations, had been detained.
“He has been arrested in a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act filed with Shahbagh Police Station. After obtaining information about secret collusion with Latif Siddique, Abu Alam Shahid Khan and others, he was arrested,” said Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam of the Detective Branch.
Bhuiyan served as secretary of the Planning Division in 2013 and was later appointed secretary to the President’s Office in 2015. He also once headed the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy as its director general.
Since retirement, he had turned to writing and music, publishing more than a dozen books and even releasing an album of his own songs.
His arrest came just a day after another former secretary, Abu Alam Shahid Khan, was also arrested in connection with the same case. Abu Alam, who regularly appeared on television talk shows as a political analyst, had been present at the Mancha 71 event.
The case stems from an incident on Aug 28, when Mancha 71 organised a roundtable at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on the Liberation War and the Constitution.
The event was stormed by a group calling itself the July Warriors, who encircled the elderly participants and disrupted the programme. Witnesses said 20–25 youths harassed attendees just as Latif arrived, while videos circulating online showed slogans such as “Catch every Awami League man, drag them to jail”.
One widely shared clip showed a freedom fighter being beaten, triggering outrage on social media. Despite being attacked, Latif and 15 others, including Dhaka University law professor Sheikh Hafizur Rahman Karzon, were arrested from the scene. Police accused them of conspiring under the banner of Mancha 71 to destabilise the country and overthrow the interim government.
A Dhaka court later sent all 16 men to jail under the Anti-Terrorism Act, rejecting their bail petitions. Police later said Abu Alam was involved in the same “anti-government conspiracy”.

‘No drones’ detected after Gaza aid flotilla says hit: Tunisia national guard
September 09, 2025
SIDI BOU SAID, Tunisia: The organizers of a Gaza-bound flotilla carrying humanitarian aid and pro-Palestinian activists said late Monday that one of their boats was hit by a suspected UAV but Tunisian authorities said “no drones” had been detected.
The flotilla, which aims to deliver aid to Gazans in defiance of Israel’s blockade, arrived in Tunisia over the weekend and was anchored 50 miles from the port of Sidi Bou Said when it reported the incident.
“The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) confirms that one of the main boats... was struck by what is suspected to be a drone,” the organizers said on social media, adding no one had been hurt.
The boat was in Tunisian waters when a fire broke out onboard and was quickly extinguished, according to an AFP journalist who arrived shortly after the flames had been doused.
Houcem Eddine Jebabli, a spokesman for Tunisia’s national guard, said their investigation was “ongoing” but “no drones have been detected.”
“According to preliminary findings, a fire broke out in the life jackets on board a ship anchored 50 miles from the port of Sidi Bou Said,” he said.
Reports of a drone are “completely unfounded,” the national guard said in a statement on its official Facebook page, suggesting that the fire may have been caused by a cigarette.
The Global Sumud Flotilla describes itself as an independent group not linked to any government or political party. Sumud means “resilience” in Arabic.
Among its high-profile participants is Greta Thunberg, who addressed pro-Palestinian campaigners in Tunisia on Sunday.
Israel has already blocked two attempts by activists to deliver aid by ship to Gaza, in June and July.
The United Nations declared a state of famine in parts of Gaza, warning that 500,000 people face “catastrophic” conditions.

Israel strikes in vicinity of three Syrian cities, Syrian media say
September 09, 2025
DAMASCUS: Israel struck in the vicinity of Syria’s central Homs city, the coastal city of Latakia, and the historic city of Palmyra, Syrian state-affiliated media said on Monday.
There was no immediate comment from Israel.
Syria’s Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli airstrikes as “a blatant infringement” of its sovereignty and regional stability, saying in a statement on Tuesday they were part of an ongoing series of escalations pursued by Israel against Syrian territory.
Syrian media did not elaborate on the size or the impact of the reported strikes.
Israel has for years waged a campaign of aerial bombardment that destroyed much of the country’s military infrastructure, and this has ramped up since the Israeli war in Gaza. Israel and Syria have recently engaged in US-mediated talks on de-escalating the conflict in southern Syria.

Police use pepper spray at opposition’s Istanbul offices as court-appointed leadership arrives
September 09, 2025
ISTANBUL: Police used pepper spray inside the Istanbul headquarters of Turkiye’s main opposition party to disperse dozens of party officials Monday, clearing the way for a court-appointed interim chairman to enter the building amid fierce protests over his appointment, party officials said.
Riot police also scuffled with supporters of the Republican People’s Party, or CHP, who had assembled at locations close to the offies in defiance of a temporary ban on public gatherings and a police blockade of its local branch.
The police raid came amid an intensifying crackdown on the CHP, including municipalities run by the party, over alleged corruption, which has led to several arrests, including that of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. The deposed mayor is widely regarded as the leading challenger to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s two-decade rule, and his arrest in March sparked the largest protests Turkiye has seen in over a decade.
Last week, an Istanbul court suspended the CHP’s provincial leadership, citing alleged irregularities in the party’s 2023 congress. The court also appointed Gursel Tekin, a former CHP lawmaker aligned with the party’s old guard, as interim chair. Critics have condemned the move as being politically motivated and aimed at weakening the party.
In response, CHP leadership called on supporters to gather at the party’s Istanbul headquarters ahead of Tekin’s scheduled arrival Monday. That prompted the governor’s office to announce a three-day ban on public gatherings late Sunday. Police quickly surrounded the building, erected barricades and restricted access.
Despite the restrictions, supporters began rallying outside the headquarters on Sunday night. Meanwhile, the Internet watchdog NetBlocks said several social media platforms, including X, YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp, were restricted in Turkiye following the CHP’s call for rallies.
On Monday, Tekin arrived at the party headquarters under heavy police protection. His arrival was met with loud protests from gathered supporters and party members angered that he accepted the position following the court ruling the party had denounced as unjust.
Speaking to journalists outside the building, Tekin said his intent was to help resolve the party’s legal challenges, not escalate tensions.
“We will do everything in our power to put an end to the legal troubles our party has been subjected to in the court corridors,” he said.
Police later used pepper spray inside the building and pushed back party officials opposed to his arrival, senior CHP legislator Gokhan Gunaydin and other officials told the opposition-aligned Halk TV television. Witnesses saw dozens of people exiting the building, visibly affected by the pepper gas.
Tekin was later seen entering the building, where he was filmed taking a phone call in a room reserved for journalists.
In a symbolic rejection of Tekin’s court-appointed leadership, the CHP later announced that it had officially closed its Istanbul provincial headquarters and reassigned another building as its new operational base.
The CHP has strongly denied allegations of corruption, saying the accusations are politically motivated and part of a broader effort to undermine the party’s growing influence. Erdogan’s government maintains that the judiciary operates independently and denies any political interference.
On Monday, Erdogan accused the CHP of defying the rule of law and of threatening public order in Istanbul by calling for street protests.
“We will never allow our streets to be thrown into chaos, nor will we permit the peace of our people — especially our fellow citizens in Istanbul — to be disturbed,” Erdogan said.
He also blamed the standoff on an internal power struggle within the CHP.
“We are against the government (which is) stealing our right to vote and arresting the people we voted for,” said Tulay Ozbay, who took part in Monday’s demonstrations. “We reject this injustice.”
Later this month, a separate court in Ankara is expected to rule on a similar case targeting the CHP’s 2023 main congress, which elected Ozgur Ozel as party leader. A ruling against the party could potentially reinstate its former leader, Kemal Kılıcdaroglu, a figure whose tenure drew widespread criticism.

Qatar sets up field hospital and shelters for victims of Afghanistan earthquakes
September 08, 2025
LONDON: The Qatar International Search and Rescue Group, a specialist unit within the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), has established a temporary field hospital in eastern Afghanistan to provide medical assistance to people affected by three major earthquakes in the area over the past week.
The group said on Monday that some of the injured were treated at the field hospital, while critical cases were transferred to major medical facilities in nearby governorates.
It has also provided tents as temporary shelters for families left homeless by earthquakes, the Qatar News Agency reported.
At least 2,205 people were killed and 3,640 injured when eastern regions of Afghanistan were shaken by a magnitude 6 earthquake last Sunday, Aug. 31, followed by two major quakes on Tuesday and Thursday last week, according to the Taliban administration.
It is estimated that about 6,700 homes were destroyed in the provinces of Nangarhar and Kunar, close to the border with Pakistan. In addition to the people left without a home, many other families have chosen to remain outdoors out of fear that their dwellings, built mainly from dry masonry, stone and timber, are vulnerable to the continuing aftershocks.
In addition to natural disasters, Afghanistan, which has a population of 42.6 million, has suffered since the 1980s as a result of political turmoil, civil wars, a weak economy and shrinking aid budgets.

Morocco earthquake survivors protest to demand housing aid
September 08, 2025
RABAT: Survivors of Morocco’s 2023 earthquake that killed nearly 3,000 people rallied in Rabat on Monday, demanding their houses be rebuilt as part of the government’s reconstruction program.
Marking the disaster’s second anniversary, dozens of protesters gathered outside parliament in the Moroccan capital, protesting what they described as their “exclusion” from the reconstruction program.
Many held signs that read “No to exclusion, no to marginalization” and “A roof for every life, dignity has no price.”
Ibrahim Achkijou, 30, told AFP he was still living in a shipping container south of Marrakech, in what he described as a “big injustice.”
“We lost our home... but we were excluded from the aid without explanation,” he said.
Aicha Ouchane, who traveled with her mother from quake-hit Ouarzazate, about 500 kilometers (310 miles) south of Rabat, to join the protest, said they lived in a garage under “very harsh conditions.”
“They tell us we are not entitled to the aid, which is not normal,” she said.
On September 8, 2023, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake razed tens of thousands of homes in central Morocco, including in the High Atlas mountain range, forcing families to sleep out in the open through the winter.
Authorities had said it damaged some 55,000 houses.
So far, some 45,800 homes have been rebuilt in the provinces of Al Haouz, Chichaoua, Taroudant and Marrakech, according to the latest official tally, which did not include data on Ouarzazate and Azilal provinces.
Authorities say more than $465 million has so far been allocated for reconstruction and rehabilitation, alongside monthly allowances of $277 for affected families.
Following the earthquake, the Moroccan authorities announced a five-year reconstruction plan with an estimated budget of $11.7 billion.

Israeli army says four soldiers killed in north Gaza
September 08, 2025
JERUSALEM: Palestinian militants killed four Israeli soldiers on Monday after lobbing an explosive device into their tank, the Israeli military said.
“Around 6:00 in the morning (0300 GMT), a squad of three terrorists arrived at the IDF (Israeli military) post near Sheikh Radwan in northern Gaza,” it said in a statement.
“The terrorists threw an explosive device into an IDF tank — the device detonated, killing the four IDF soldiers who were in the tank at the time.”
Another soldier was moderately injured in the exchange of fire that ensued, the military said, adding that “hits were identified” on two of the three militants who carried out the assault.
Only three of the dead soldiers were named, while the name of the fourth has not yet been cleared for publication.
According to an AFP toll based on data from the Israeli military, 468 soldiers have been killed since the start of the military’s ground offensive in Gaza on October 27, 2023.

Artist showcases Qur’anic verses with intricate papercutting creations
SALEH FAREED
September 08, 2025
JEDDAH: Australia-based Pakistani artist Tusif Ahmad visited Jeddah this week to showcase his intricate and colorful papercutting representations of Qur’anic verses.
Ahmad, who has lived in Australia since 2006, presented his work to an audience of Islamic art enthusiasts during a talk at the Layla Design Gallery.
Over the past 12 years, he has produced more than 500 pieces, exhibited globally, and won recognition for an art form he describes as “an invitation to reflect on the Qur’an.”
His journey began by chance when his 5-year-old daughter said to him: “Baba, I’m bored.”
To keep her entertained, he folded a sheet of paper and cut it into the shape of a sunflower, sparking an artistic path that would merge his faith with a love for calligraphy, geometry, and storytelling.
“My purpose is to connect people with the spiritual and artistic beauty of the Qur’an through exhibitions, artist talks, and private viewings in Saudi Arabia,” he told Arab News about his visit.
He explained that his work uses layered patterns and light to represent the depth of the Qur’an’s message.
“Each artwork aims to create a bridge between tradition and modern expression, inspiring both Muslims and non-Muslims to connect with the spiritual essence of Islamic art,” he said.
He wants to create a sense of wonder while building cultural understanding and dispelling misconceptions about Islam through his art.
“It’s about sharing something beautiful, making a connection, and leaving a positive mark on the world,” he said.
“During the (New Zealand) Christchurch mosque tragedy (in 2019), where many Muslims lost their lives, I felt a deep responsibility to promote peace and understanding.
“I exhibited my Islamic papercutting artworks in a Catholic church as a gesture of harmony between faiths. Alhamdulillah, this action was widely appreciated around the world, and many people saw it as a symbol of unity and respect.”
During his Jeddah talk, Ahmad showcased works from a series inspired by the surahs Ar-Rahman, Yaseen, and Yusuf. He explained that small pieces may take weeks while larger ones require months of patience and spiritual focus.
Though not a native Arabic speaker, he has begun learning the language and studying the Qur’an in depth.
“I am very keen to understand the message in each Qur’anic verse that I work on. To understand the background, I take leads from scholars’ lectures and attend Arabic-language classes,” he explained.
Now, Ahmad is in discussions with art and cultural organizations in Jeddah and Riyadh to stage his first solo exhibition in Saudi Arabia.
“A solo exhibition would be a great opportunity to present my complete body of work and engage with a wider audience in Saudi Arabia,” he said.

Saudi Fashion Growth Takes Center Stage At Tokyo Roadshow
September 08, 2025
RIYADH: The Fashion Commission, in partnership with Vogue Business, concluded the Tokyo Investment Roadshow, bringing together investors, decision-makers, and creative leaders from Japan and the region to discuss Saudi Arabia’s rapidly growing fashion sector and explore investment opportunities.
During the tour, the commission unveiled the “State of Fashion Sector in Saudi Arabia 2025” report via its Fashion Futures platform, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday.
This annual report, a key industry reference, provides data-driven insights into the creative economy, consumer trends, talent empowerment, and global shifts shaping the sector.
Key statistics revealed that Saudi Arabia’s fashion market is projected to reach $36.8 billion by 2025, making it the largest in the Gulf region, the SPA added.
The market is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 6.4 percent through 2029. Women account for 55 percent of the sector’s workforce, with 44 percent in management positions, surpassing national averages.
Additionally, 96 percent of Saudi consumers are aware of sustainability concepts, and 64 percent consider them when making purchases.
The commission also introduced a special manga version of the report, developed with Manga Productions, a subsidiary of the Misk Foundation.
Designed for Japanese audiences, the manga presents Saudi Arabia’s fashion vision through a visually engaging narrative rooted in heritage and looking to the future, reflecting the commission’s commitment to cultural dialogue and storytelling innovation.
The event featured a data-driven panel discussing key findings from the report, with contributions from experts and designers, the SPA reported.
It included an investment session titled “Investing in Saudi Arabia: Funding the Future of Fashion,” with representatives from the Fashion Commission, Ministry of Investment, and Cultural Development Fund.
The session covered funding opportunities, new regulations, and the growing role of both private and government sectors.
This roadshow builds on previous investment initiatives by the Fashion Commission in global fashion capitals, the most recent being London.
Organized with the Ministry of Investment and Cultural Development Fund, it aims to attract international investment and simplify access to opportunities within Saudi Arabia’s fashion sector.
The Tokyo tour highlighted the deepening ties between Saudi Arabia and Japan in creative industries, with fashion emerging as a key pillar of international collaboration.
The event provided a strategic platform to foster partnerships and enhance cultural and commercial exchange between the two nations.

Christchurch's Muslim community has high rates of mental health conditions, study finds
September 09, 2025
The March 15 terrorist attack left Christchurch's Muslim community with high rates of both mental health conditions and post-traumatic growth, researchers say.
The March 15 Project aims to understand the ongoing mental health impact of the terrorist attack on the Muslim community in Christchurch in 2019.
The University of Otago researchers shared their findings at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists conference in Dunedin on Monday.
During Friday prayers 51 people lost their lives and 40 people were wounded when a white supremacist terrorist attacked two Christchurch mosques.
About 250 witnessed the attack which was streamed on social media.
Just shy of a year later, interviews for the March 15 study started.
Close to 190 participants were involved, all adult Muslims representing 34 different ethnicities and including people who lost family members, were injured, witnessed the attacks, or had family members impacted.
Professor of Psychiatry and co-lead of the March 15 studies Caroline Bell said they discovered high rates of mental health disorders among participants and it was common for people to have several conditions at once.
"The conditions that people had were PTSD - post traumatic stress disorder - that we hear a lot about and it makes complete sense, but also depression. In fact, depression was the most significant disorder that people had," she said.
Those who lost loved ones or were injured were more likely to have depression or PTSD.
Uninjured witnesses had significant risks of PTSD, she said.
"That's really important because that group can often get forgotten with a lot of emphasis on people who've lost loved ones and who are injured, who need supports. But that other group can sometimes get lost and that's really important that their needs also get met," Bell said.
Close to 90 percent of participants were born outside New Zealand and had lived in Aotearoa for a median of 11 years.
Most participants reported exposure to at least one major traumatic event before the mosque attack, including natural disaster or living in a war zone.
University of Otago Associate Professor Ben Beaglehole said they also studied the positive psychological changes following the attack to create a more comprehensive picture.
The findings suggested those who experienced March 15 had relatively high levels of post traumatic growth compared to other populations exposed to trauma.
He was not surprised by the results.
"They were united by their shared faith and because there was a widespread outpouring of positive emotions following the shootings and these factors, I thought, might contribute to positive psychological impacts alongside the negative psychological impacts that they also experienced," he said.
The study measured growth across five areas including how they relate to others, new possibilities, personal strength, spiritual change and appreciation of life.
Religion also helped some people to manage their stress and cope better, Beaglehole said.
"It is integral because they were targeted directly because of their shared faith.
"We know that some of them may have questioned their religion in the aftermath, but as a group, the role of religion appeared to be an important mechanism by which they could make sense and grow through their experiences."
Senior research fellow and clinical psychologist Dr Shaystah Dean presented on a qualitative study which looked at the impacts of daily life and well-being post-attack.
It was important not to generalise experiences as the impacted community was incredibly diverse, not a homogenous group, with some only sharing a faith, she said.
The common themes included being overwhelmed in the midst of chaos, experiencing a silent and enduring impact, living similarly but differently with an often hidden emotional toll, and gaining meaning and growth, which could be finding purpose or renewing their sense of faith.
The need for support was not over and it was vital to address any barriers to accessing it as well as provide options, Dean said.
"There are ongoing stresses for people including changes in dynamics, children growing up without a parent, there are ongoing judicial processes, so I think keeping a long term view on the need of supporting those impacted is really important," she said.
Local Muslims were employed to provide support in the aftermath because they were trusted in the community and had the right cultural and linguistics skills.
March 15 studies co-lead and senior research fellow Dr Ruqayya Sulaiman-Hill said this blurred the lines between personal connections and professional roles, and it took a strong emotional toll.
"Some people, they were bereaved. Some had actually been shot in the mosque, some were survivors from the mosque, and yet they were still working in the roles to support others," she said.
Despite the toll it took, she said virtually everyone said they would do it again.
But there were lessons to be learnt, including taking a trauma informed approach as well as more peer support and targeted supervision.
She also wanted to see change in how relationships were viewed, saying some had lost people they viewed as de facto family, but because they were not related by blood it was not taken into account.
"Those relationships weren't really acknowledged."
The community had also raised concerns that certain voices were being overexposed in the media but they did not necessarily reflect the views of the community, she said.
A second phase covering five years post attack was planned, but the project did not get the funding to go ahead.

Former Northwich Muslim Centre could become three-bed home
8TH SEPTEMBER
By Rob Goulding
A MOSQUE in Northwich town centre which is ‘no longer in use’ could be turned into a three-bedroom house.
Planners at Cheshire West and Cheshire Council (CWAC) have received an application to turn the former Northwich Muslim Centre and Masjid, in Church Road, into a dwelling.
The one-time shop and taxi office was used by the town’s Muslim community as a place to meet and worship between 2012 and May, this year.
The closure followed the opening of a new, much bigger community centre and mosque on Meadow Street in a building formerly occupied by Citizens’ Advice Bureau.
This officially opened on Saturday, May 24, at a well-attended ceremony which attracted members of the Muslim community from all over the region.
Dignitaries also in attendance included Mid Cheshire MP, Andrew Cooper; Lord Mayor of Chester, Cllr Sherin Akhtar; the mayor of Warrington, Cllr Mo Hussain; Witton ward’s Cllr Sam Naylor; and vicar of St Helens Church, Rev Andrew Ridley.
The planning application for the old mosque in Church Street, close to the The George and Dragon pub, suggests once the conversion is complete, the resulting 126 square metre three-bedroom property will be sold on the open market.
The conversion involves replacing external windows and door, which will alter the building’s appearance from the street.
Prior to Church Road’s conversion into a mosque in 2012, from 2006, Northwich’s Muslim community rented a room on Fridays at the town’s memorial hall for prayers.
By contrast, the new Meadow Street mosque which replaces the Church Road is large enough both to accommodate hundreds of worshippers, and provide a focal point for a wide range of community, social, educational, and spiritual activities.
The public is invited to comment on the plans for the old Church Street mosque, and can do so until Monday, September 22, via CWAC’s planning portal using reference 25/02436/FUL.

Emerging New Shusha Mosque: Embodiment of grandeur and Victory
08 September 2025
The under-construction New Shusha Mosque is set to become a new symbol of the city.
The mosque’s foundation was laid in 2021 by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
The mosque’s design carries symbolic meaning: its shape represents the number 8, marking the day of Shusha’s liberation and Victory Day, while the two minarets symbolize the number 11, representing the month of the city’s liberation. The minarets will reach a height of 72 meters.
Shusha is also known for its historic mosques, celebrated as examples of architectural heritage. The New Shusha Mosque will join this collection of historic architectural gems.
The project is being implemented with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and Paşa Holding.

Threats against Muslim man, family and mosque in Newmarket detailed by Muslim leader
Sep 08, 2025
A 53-year-old Newmarket man faces charges after police accused him of making threats against a Muslim in his neighbourhood and a mosque, according to York Regional Police.
Police said they are treating the alleged incidents as hate-motivated crimes.
At a press conference on Monday, Omar Khamissa, CEO of the National Council of Canadian Muslins, read a statement from the alleged target — a neighbour of the accused man, Don Cameron — who wished to remain anonymous.
“My family and our neighbourhood continue to live in fear given the current situation,” said Khamissa, reading from the statement.
“The individual who had just been charged with two counts of uttering threats, Don Cameron, is my neighbour. Although Don appeared friendly over the past 14 years, we’re informed by York Regional Police that he (allegedly) shared with multiple people close to him, a plan to kill my children and me. And to blow up the local mosque … including tampering with the natural gas lines.”
The alleged target also asked for all three levels of government to “work together, to address Islamophobia with a clear strategy,” and thanked York Regional Police, among others, “for their support.”
“I can not fully express the shock my family and I felt when we learned the details from the authorities last week,” said Khamissa, reading from the statement.
“The thought that someone living so close to us within our own community was (allegedly) consuming and sharing far-right anti-Muslim content and beliefs while planning violent attacks is deeply disturbing and unsettling.”
Cameron is charged with two counts of uttering threats.
The investigation is ongoing.

Supreme Court lifts limits on LA immigration raids
September 9, 2025
Nadine Yousif
The US Supreme Court has ruled sweeping immigration raids in Los Angeles can continue for now, lifting a federal judge's order that had barred agents from making stops without "reasonable suspicion".
The Monday ruling is a win for President Donald Trump, who has vowed to conduct record-level deportations of migrants in the country illegally.
The 6-3 decision of the conservative-majority court allows agents to stops suspects based solely on their race, language or job, while a legal challenge to the recent immigration sweeps in LA works its way through the courts.
The liberal justices dissented, saying the decision puts constitutional freedoms at risk.
Conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote in Monday's decision that the lower court's restraining order went too far in restricting how Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents could carry out stops or questioning of suspected unlawful migrants.
"To be clear, apparent ethnicity alone cannot furnish reasonable suspicion," he wrote. "However, it can be a 'relevant factor' when considered along with other salient factors."
The Supreme Court's three liberal justices issued a strong dissent penned by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who wrote that "countless people in the Los Angeles area have been grabbed, thrown to the ground, and handcuffed simply because of their looks, their accents, and the fact they make a living by doing manual labour".
"Today, the Court needlessly subjects countless more to these exact same indignities," she wrote.
The White House welcomed the ruling, vowing in a statement to "continue fulfilling its mandate to arrest and deport criminal illegal aliens".
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom, both Democrats, criticised the decision.
"Today's ruling is not only dangerous - it's un-American and threatens the fabric of personal freedom in the United States of America," Bass said in a statement.
Newsom warned that "Trump's private police force now has a green light to come after your family".
The decision lifts an order by US District Judge Maame E Frimpong in Los Angeles, who had said that there is a "mountain of evidence" showing the raids were violating the US Constitution.
The order halted the raids, with Judge Frimpon saying the Trump administration cannot rely on factors like "apparent race or ethnicity" or "speaking Spanish" alone to stop or question individuals.
The judge also barred immigration enforcement agents from conducting stops based solely on someone's presence "at a particular location" like a bus stop, agricultural site or car wash, or based solely on the type of work an individual does.
The temporary restraining order was issued in a legal challenge by immigration advocacy groups, who argued that immigration officers in Los Angeles were conducting "roving patrols" indiscriminately, and were denying individuals access to lawyers.
Judge Frimpong said this may violate the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution, which prohibits unreasonable government searches and seizures.
The Supreme Court, however, said that the administration's actions have a good chance of ultimately being considered constitutional by the federal courts. While its decision only pertained to Judge Frimpong's temporary restraining order, the justices also showed how the court would approach the lawsuit should it have to consider an appeal down the road.
Lawyers for the Department of Homeland Security have argued that immigration officers are targeting people based on their legal status in the US, not skin colour, race or ethnicity.
They have also said that Judge Frimpong's order wrongly restricted ICE operations.
Those behind the lawsuit challenging the raids said they were "truly disgusted" with the Supreme Court's decision.
"I didn't think this would be possible," Brian Gavidia, an American citizen who was briefly detained by federal agents in June, told the BBC.
"I thought we had laws here about racial profiling."
Armando Gudino, a plaintiff in the case, raised possible national implications of the ruling.
Mr Gudino, the executive director of the Los Angeles Worker Center Network, a worker and immigrant rights advocacy group, said everyone in the US should be worried, arguing the court had "legalised racism".
The Trump administration began sweeping immigration raids in Los Angeles in June, stopping and arresting people at Home Depot and other workplaces, and were met with immediate protests and civil unrest..
Trump then deployed nearly 2,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines in response, without authorisation from the state of California.
A federal judge has since ruled that the National Guard deployment was illegal. The White House responded that "a rogue judge is trying to usurp" the president's authority "to protect American cities from violence and destruction."
The Supreme Court's decision to let the raids continue comes as the Trump administration looks to ramp up law enforcement in other cities, including Washington DC.
In August, Trump ordered National Guard troops to the American capital to address what he says is high crime in the city, and is also using federal officers to bolster the district's law enforcement.
He is now signalling that this week he will decide if he will also send federal law enforcement and the National Guard to Chicago.

Hamas discussing US 'ideas' for Gaza ceasefire after Trump's 'last warning'
September 9, 2025
David Gritten
Hamas says it has received "some ideas" from the US through mediators on how to reach a Gaza ceasefire agreement.
The Palestinian armed group said it was discussing how to develop the ideas, noting that it was ready to release its 48 remaining hostages in Gaza in return for a "clear" declaration ending the war.
A Palestinian official told the BBC the US plan would see the hostages freed in the first 48 hours of a 60-day truce in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and good-faith negotiations on a permanent ceasefire.
It came after US President Donald Trump gave Hamas what he called a "last warning" to agree a deal. He said Israel had accepted his terms, without giving details.
Israel's Foreign Minister, Gideon Saar, said it was ready to agree a deal ending the war that would include the release of all the hostages - only 20 of whom are believed to be alive - and the disarmament of Hamas.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meanwhile warned the approximately one million Palestinians living in famine-stricken Gaza City to evacuate immediately, as the Israeli military stepped up an offensive to conquer it.
"In the last two days we brought down 50 terrorist high-rises, and this is only the beginning of the ground operation in Gaza City," he said in a video. "I say to the residents of Gaza City: you have been warned, get out of there."
Hospitals said Israeli attacks killed at least 40 people across Gaza on Monday, including 25 in Gaza City and elsewhere in the north.
The Israeli military said four soldiers were killed in combat in northern Gaza.
On Sunday evening, Hamas put out a statement saying it had "received through the mediators some ideas from the American side aimed at reaching a ceasefire agreement" and that it welcomed the initiative.
"The movement is in constant contact with the intermediaries to develop these ideas into a comprehensive agreement that meets the needs of our people," it added.
Hamas said it was ready to immediately negotiate the release of all those who were taken hostage during the group's attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 in exchange for "a clear declaration to end the war, a full withdrawal from Gaza, and the formation of a committee of Palestinian independents to manage Gaza".
Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump had written on Truth Social: "Everyone wants the Hostages HOME. Everyone wants this War to end! The Israelis have accepted my Terms. It is time for Hamas to accept as well."
"I have warned Hamas about the consequences of not accepting. This is my last warning, there will not be another one!"
A senior Palestinian official familiar with the ceasefire efforts told the BBC that under the US proposal, all of the hostages would be released within the first 48 hours of a 60-day truce in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, including those serving life sentences and other lengthy terms, and detainees from Gaza.
According to the official, the proposal also includes a personal guarantee from the US president that both sides would hold good-faith negotiations on an end to the war.
During the first two weeks of the truce, the negotiations would cover key issues, including Hamas's disarmament, the formation of an independent governing body or administrative committee in Gaza, and arrangements for Israeli troop withdrawals, the official said. Humanitarian aid would also flow openly into Gaza.
The framework appeared to be aimed at creating a pathway to a broader settlement while addressing immediate humanitarian and security concerns.
Israeli media quoted political sources as saying that Israel was "seriously considering" the US plan, but also that Hamas was likely to have difficulty accepting it.
On Monday, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar told a news conference in Budapest: "President Trump said it clearly yesterday, Israel said yes to his proposal. We are ready to accept a full deal that would end the war based on the cabinet's decision.
"Two things must happen. One, the return of our hostages… [Two], Hamas must lay down its arms."
Defence Minister Israel Katz at the same time warned Hamas: "Release the hostages and put down your weapons - or Gaza will be destroyed and you will be annihilated."
The Israeli military has been intensifying its air and ground attacks on Gaza City, and on Monday a fourth high-rise building was destroyed in an air strike in as many days.
Video footage verified by the BBC showed the al-Roya 2 building collapsing after being hit by two projectiles.
Before the strike, the Israeli military ordered dozens of displaced families who had been sheltering inside the building to evacuate along those who had been living in tents pitched in the surrounding area.
The military said Hamas fighters responsible for installing "intelligence gathering means and explosive devices" had been operating near the building and "used it throughout the war to plan and advance terror attacks against [Israeli] forces".
"We don't know what to do and where to go. The bombing is insane," Janine Zoarob, a displaced woman who was living in one of the tents, told Reuters news agency. "I am afraid for my children, I am afraid for myself, and I am afraid for those around me."
On Saturday, Israel directed displaced people to head to a newly designated "humanitarian area" in southern Gaza for their "safety". The zone is less than 43 sq km (17 sq miles), which is equivalent to around 12% of the territory.
The military has said there is essential humanitarian infrastructure there. However, the UN has said the tent camps there are already overcrowded and unsafe, and that hospitals are operating several times above capacity.
UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher has also warned the window is closing fast to prevent the famine in Gaza City - which was confirmed last month by global food security experts - from spreading to the central city of Deir al-Balah and southern city of Khan Younis by the end of this month.
He called for humanitarian aid to be allowed in unimpeded and at scale, as well as the protection of civilians, a ceasefire and the release of the hostages.
The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza in response to the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.
At least 64,522 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since then, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry.
The ministry also says 393 people, have so far died during the war as a result of malnutrition and starvation, including six over the past 24 hours.

Trump ends media censorship cooperation with EU – FT
8 Sep, 2025
The US has withdrawn from a series of international agreements aimed at countering alleged foreign “disinformation,” effectively ending joint efforts with EU governments to police online content, the Financial Times has reported, citing unnamed European officials.
The US State Department notified participating nations last week that it would terminate memoranda of understanding signed under the Biden administration, according to the report published on Monday. The agreements with 22 countries, mainly in Europe and Africa, were part of a broader initiative led by the now-defunct Global Engagement Center (GEC).
The GEC was formally disbanded in April after congressional Republicans blocked a funding renewal in December. Originally established in 2011 to fight online terrorist propaganda, the center’s mandate was later expanded to cover alleged foreign state-backed “disinformation.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously characterized the GEC as a taxpayer-funded tool for political suppression, alleging that it was used by the Biden administration to target conservative voices under the guise of combating propaganda. “Under the previous administration, this office... spent millions of dollars to actively silence and censor the voices of Americans they were supposed to be serving,” Rubio said in April.
The move marks another step in a broader campaign by President Donald Trump to dismantle “ineffective” institutions perceived as vehicles for political censorship. Since taking office, Trump has also defunded the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which oversees the Cold War-era broadcasters Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), widely regarded as Western propaganda outlets.
Washington has also pushed back against the EU’s Digital Services Act, which mandates the removal of content deemed illegal or harmful. US diplomats were reportedly ordered in August to lobby against the legislation, calling it a threat to free expression and a burden on American tech firms. Critics of the EU law have argued that it institutionalizes censorship across the bloc and unfairly targets non-EU media and platforms.
The EU imposed sweeping sanctions on Russian media after the Ukraine conflict escalated in 2022. Outlets like RT, Sputnik, and RIA Novosti have all been banned across the bloc, while their personnel have been targeted with sanctions. Moscow described the crackdown as “global censorship and a regime of zero tolerance for dissenting opinions.”
