'Namaz should not be offered in places of dispute': Muslim community welcomes Allahabad HC verdict

3 May 2026

New Delhi: Senior members of the Muslim community on Saturday welcomed the Allahabad High court's judgment which held that the right to practise religion does not extend to converting private premises into an "unregulated congregational space".

The court dismissed a plea seeking permission and police protection for offering regular namaz at an alleged private property in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal district.

Commending the High Court's decision, Muslim religious leader Maulana Chaudhary Ibrahim Hussain said: "In Islam, prayers should not be offered at places where disputes may arise. Also, there should be a particular place to offer namaz."

"If people of any one particular community start following their religious practises at public places, then it may hurt the sentiments of others," he added.

"Moreover, the public places are meant for the use of common people. Therefore, it would better if those places are restricted for such use only and no dispute arises in it," the Muslim cleric added.

Barelvi highlighted that ambulances also pass through such places and namaz should not be offered there so that the route does not get obstructed.

"We believe that mosques are meant for offering namaz. People sometimes offer namaz at public places, but it should be offered in mosques," he said.

Pakistan says no temporary ceasefire with Afghanistan in place as tensions rise

-------------

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s foreign office said this week that there is currently no ceasefire in place with Afghanistan, as tensions surge between the neighbors following renewed hostilities between them.

Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed to a temporary ceasefire in March ahead of the Eid Al-Fitr holiday festival, with Islamabad saying it had halted fighting at the insistence of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Türkiye.

The two neighbors were involved in the worst fighting between them in decades after Afghan forces launched what they said was a retaliatory attack against Pakistan in February for earlier strikes. Pakistan carried out targeted military actions in Afghanistan in response, claiming to have killed hundreds of Afghan Taliban members.

“There is no temporary ceasefire in place,” foreign office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said on Saturday, according to the state-run Pakistan TV Digital.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s foreign office said in a separate statement on Saturday that 52 civilians have been killed and 84 injured in cross-border attacks from Afghanistan since Islamabad announced the temporary ceasefire in March.

Islamabad has repeatedly accused Kabul of allowing its territory to be used by anti-Pakistan militant groups, which, it says, are backed by India, a charge both Afghan and Indian officials deny.

Afghanistan, on the other hand, accuses Pakistan of targeting civilian sites in the country. Bilateral tensions surged this week again after Kabul accused Islamabad of targeting a university in Kunar, among other civilian infrastructure, in attacks.

Pakistan denied the allegations and accused the Afghan Taliban of resorting to indiscriminate and unprovoked cross-border attacks during the week.

Relations between the two neighbors have deteriorated in recent months, with frequent border skirmishes and Pakistan carrying out strikes inside Afghanistan.

Pakistani officials say the country’s operations target militant hideouts and Afghan Taliban posts using precision-guided munitions to avoid civilian casualties. Afghanistan says it does not allow the use of its soil for attacks against other countries.

02 May 2026

Tehran - Saba: Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ismail Baghaei strongly on Saturday condemned the terrorist attack that targeted Sayyida Zeinab area in the Syrian capital, Damascus, which resulted in the martyrdom of the Imam and speaker of Sayyida Zeinab Shrine, Sayyed Farhan Hassan al-Mansour.

Afghan officials say media should align with Islamic and national values

May 3, 2026

On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Information and Culture said media outlets in the country should operate in accordance with Islamic and national values.

Deputy Minister of Publications Hayatullah Muhajer said media organizations should take societal expectations into account and ensure broad coverage of statements issued by the leadership of the Islamic Emirate.

According to Muhajer, dozens of cultural and media programmes were organized nationwide during the same period, while a number of new media licenses were issued. He added that efforts are continuing to simplify administrative procedures and improve services for media institutions.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Information and Culture spokesperson Khubaib Ghufran reiterated the Islamic Emirate’s commitment to media freedom, the protection of journalists, and respect for privacy.

He said media outlets should consider the relationship between the public and the government in their reporting, adding that the ministry is working to facilitate and professionalize access to information across Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, marking World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO called on governments and societies worldwide to strengthen protections for freedom of expression and provide greater support for journalism as a cornerstone of peace and democracy.

In a statement issued on May 3, UNESCO said journalism plays a critical role in fostering peace, emphasizing that access to reliable and verified information is essential for building just, resilient and inclusive societies.

The organization warned that manipulation of information can deepen divisions and erode public trust, while free and accurate reporting promotes accountability, encourages dialogue and safeguards human rights.

UNESCO said World Press Freedom Day is also an important reminder for governments to uphold commitments to media freedom and protect the rights of journalists to work without interference.

The organization added that the occasion offers media professionals an opportunity to reflect on ethics, independence and the challenges facing journalism worldwide, while also expressing solidarity with outlets operating under pressure and honoring journalists who lost their lives in pursuit of the truth.

------------

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has instructed that the draft amendments to the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) Act be completed within three months.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the move includes streamlining Mara’s role as a key umbrella for the Bumiputera economy as well as a one-stop centre for development through better coordination of related agencies and policies.

He said emphasis would also be placed on governance to ensure the Bumiputera agency not only speaks up on key issues, but also demonstrates stronger commitment to good governance practices.

“In its 60 years, Mara has seen its ups and downs. There were times when governance issues were seen as weak and problematic. That is why I thank the Mara chairman for giving due attention to governance.

“I therefore expect the new Mara Act to be ready before the end of the year. I do not want to wait too long. There is no need to take seven to eight months…submit the draft to me within three months,” he said when speaking at the Mara 60th anniversary celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur here today.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Mara chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and Mara director-general Datuk Zulfikri Osman.

The prime minister said the amendments are in line with one of the seven thrusts under the Mara 40-Year Vision, which is designed to position the institution as a key driver of a more inclusive, competitive and globally oriented Bumiputera economic development agenda.

“The third relates to talent development, including producing skilled and semi-skilled workers in line with evolving needs, particularly in sectors such as oil and gas and technologies like artificial intelligence (AI),” he said.

Anwar said the fourth thrust focuses on capital development for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to expand globally, including in the halal sector, while the fifth and sixth thrusts aim to position Mara as a one-stop centre for education, investment and entrepreneurship, as well as to penetrate international markets.

Tommy Robinson 'secretly booked by Oxford Union to speak at debate on Islam - but activist's involvement is kept under wraps due to fear of backlash'

By DAISY GRAHAM-BROWN

2 May 2026

Tommy Robinson has secretly been booked by the Oxford Union to speak at a debate on Islam, The Mail on Sunday understands.

Sources in the 200-year-old debating society have said the far-Right activist has accepted an invitation to debate the motion: ‘This House believes the West is right to be suspicious of Islam.’

The MoS understands his involvement is due to be officially announced only on the day of the debate over fears of a potential backlash among students.

The Oxford Union was founded in 1823 and staunchly upholds the principle of free speech. It has a long history of inviting controversial figures, including OJ Simpson and former BNP leader Nick Griffin.

Now, Robinson is understood to be preparing for the debate on Islam at the union, which the official programme states is designed to tackle an ‘uncomfortable question’ on ‘a deeply contested and polarising issue’.

Sources in the 200-year-old debating society have said the far-Right activist accepted an invitation - but that news of his appearance had been kept quiet to avoid a potential backlash

Sources in the 200-year-old debating society have said the far-Right activist accepted an invitation - but that news of his appearance had been kept quiet to avoid a potential backlash

It asks: ‘Are Western suspicions of Islam simply the product of prejudice – an effort to manufacture a scapegoat onto which broader social anxieties are projected – or do they reflect a genuine tension between aspects of Islamic belief and the values that underpin liberal democracy?’

The programme adds: ‘In a context where racial and religious tensions have intensified across parts of the West, it is both urgent and necessary to address this question head-on.’

The planned march comes after Robinson organised a similar event last September that drew more than 100,000 people and saw multiple arrests, according to the Metropolitan Police.

Asked about Robinson’s debate on Islam, a spokesman for the Oxford Union told the MoS: ‘The Oxford Union Society’s committee works tirelessly to curate a termly programme of debates and speaker meetings that give our members the unique opportunity to challenge, question, and interact with a broad range of speakers.

'Speakers for this term are still being confirmed, with ongoing events in the Middle East – and the dates for Eid Al Adha – being important factors.

‘For events with greater levels of external interest, information is often released closer to the planned date to mitigate any potential security risks, after routine liaison with stakeholders including the police.

Iran War: Trump Whinges About Iran Proposal, China Rejects New US Secondary Sanctions, Ansar Allah Threatens Saudis

by Yves Smith

May 3, 2026

As Trump normally relishes, he is the center of attention over the epochally-important question of “Will he or won’t he resume attacks on Iran?” Iran is not making this easy for him via refusing to include any porcine maquillage in its latest proposal, although one could argue the mere fact of a proposal is an itty bitty concession. The Wall Street Journal tried to pretty things up on behalf of Trump, claiming in a headline that Iran had softened its stance by dropping its demand that the US needed to end its blockade as a precondition to talks. We pointed out that this was a procedural move only, that there was no sign that Iran had relented on its substantive demands, and that that give was offset by what Team Trump was likely to view as an even bigger take, that of deferring discussion of nuclear issues to focus on Strait of Hormuz and other immediate conflict matters. Recall that many commentators suggested that a possible Trump face-saver would be to get an improvement on nuclear enrichment terms compared to the JCPOA, such as no sunset, and call that a win in the face of other massive climbdowns. Iran is not allowing even that.1

Over half of global terror-related deaths now occur here, according to monitoring groups. For the people who live there, it’s a cycle of misery that affects all, regardless of their religion.

Our Africa Correspondent Jamal Osman was granted rare access with the Nigerian Army, as they look to wrestle back control of the country’s far northeast from Islamist fighters. Here’s his report from the city of Maiduguri.

‘Unity in diversity’ concept excludes Muslim identity, rues prof

By Jyoti Punwani

May 03, 2026

MUMBAI: Muslim identity has two aspects: Muslim substantive identity, that is, the way Muslims live on the ground; and the discourse about Muslim identity. And the gap between the two is very wide, said Hilal Ahmed, researcher and professor with the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS). However, he added, “Once you try to find out the former, you invariably find yourself veering away from the latter.”

Speaking on ‘Muslim Identity and Nationalism’ in Mumbai on Saturday, Ahmed recalled the incident where an RPF jawan shot three Muslim passengers on board the Jaipur Mumbai Superfast Express in July 2023. The jawan then delivered a speech saying, “If you want to live in India, you have to say Yogi/Modi.”

Ahmed remarked, “He was described as being mentally ill, but it was obvious that in his consciousness, the discourse about Muslim identity was predominant.” Had the jawan talked to them, asked them where they were headed, or where they were coming from, things would have taken a different turn, he added.

Ahmed and other researchers had conducted an experiment on the same lines in trains in Uttar Pradesh. They found the moment substantive Muslim identity, or “grassroots Muslimness” began to emerge, the image of Muslims that many Hindus had began to disappear, and the topic of discussion veered towards the shared problems both Hindus and Muslims faced.

Pakistan To Stay Gripped In Double-Digit Inflation Amid Iran War-Led Oil Price Surge: Report

May 03, 2026

Pakistan's fragile economic recovery faces a mounting threat as Middle East tensions push global oil prices higher, fueling fears of sustained double-digit inflation. A Dawn report warns that rising energy costs and disrupted supply chains are tightening pressure on external finances.

The brokerage firm, Topline Securities, in its “Pakistan Strategy” report, adds that the prolonged instability is also hurting markets, with near-term recovery hinging on a peaceful resolution of the regional conflict.

These forecasts assume a benchmark oil price of $100 per barrel. For every $10 increase in oil prices, Pakistan's inflation burden is expected to rise by roughly 50 basis points.

If oil prices rise to $120 per barrel, inflation could increase further, which may force the State Bank of Pakistan to raise interest rates more aggressively to maintain real returns.

Pakistan's economy gasps as Middle East war ignites double-digit inflation

May 03, 2026

Karachi: Pakistan's struggling economy is set to remain gripped by double-digit inflation if global oil prices continue to surge amid the persistent Middle East crisis, according to a report by Dawn. Analysts have warned that the combination of skyrocketing costs and obstructed imports is already placing an unbearable strain on the country's fragile external position.

Topline Securities Ltd released its latest "Pakistan Strategy" report on Saturday, providing a grim analysis of how soaring energy costs and regional instability are battering the Pakisteconomy and its volatile stock market. The brokerage highlighted that the situation is "prolonged and evolving," with any hope of stability resting entirely on an immediate and peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The report, as cited by Dawn, projects that under current conditions, inflation in Pakistan could average between 9 and 10 per cent over the next year, with fourth-quarter FY26 figures expected to exceed 11 per cent. These estimates are based on oil at USD 100 per barrel, noting that every USD 10 spike adds roughly 50 basis points to the inflation burden. Should prices hit USD 120 per barrel, annual inflation could reach 11 per cent, likely forcing the State Bank of Pakistan into further aggressive interest rate hikes.

This inflationary pressure is expected to cripple economic expansion, leading Topline Securities to slash its GDP growth forecast for FY27 to a mere 2.5 to 3.0 per cent, down from an original 4.0 per cent. While FY26 growth is currently estimated at 3.5 to 4.0 per cent, the industrial sector remains at high risk, with potential growth collapsing to just 1 per cent from nearly 4 per cent.

Pakistan faces economic strain; oil surge drives inflation toward 11%

May 3, 2026

Pakistan’s struggling economy is likely to remain under sustained pressure, with double-digit inflation expected to persist if global oil prices continue to surge amid the ongoing Middle East crisis, according to a report by Dawn.

The report, asx cited by ANI, said that under current conditions, inflation could average between 9 and 10 per cent over the next year, with fourth-quarter FY26 figures expected to exceed 11 per cent. Chinese firm shuts Gwadar plant in Pakistan, lays off workers amid losses

May 03, 2026

Karachi: A Chinese company operating in Pakistan's Gwadar Free Zone shut down its factory and terminated all employees, citing an unworkable business climate and mounting financial losses on Friday, according to The Express Tribune.

Hangeng Trade Company announced the closure on International Labour Day, saying in an official statement that "non-commercial factors" and operational difficulties had made continued business operations impossible.

The company said that despite meeting international export standards, its shipments remained stuck, pushing the business into sustained losses. It added that it had remained in contact with authorities over the past three months in an attempt to resolve the issues, but no solution emerged.

As a result, the company claimed to have been forced to cease operations. Hangeng Trade Company stated that before shutting down, it had cleared all outstanding obligations, including all three months' salaries for employees, penalties, electricity bills and container demurrage charges.

'Be our voice': Brutalized Iranians speak of loved ones taken by the Islamic regime

By DANIELLE GREYMAN-KENNARD

MAY 2, 2026

Families of Iranians executed or forcibly disappeared by state authorities have been left without answers about the fate of their loved ones, in what human rights organizations describe as a longstanding pattern of repression by the Islamic Republic.

In interviews with The Jerusalem Post, relatives of four victims detailed cases of secret executions, enforced disappearances, and killings during protests, describing how the regime systematically withholds information, denies due process, and, in some cases, refuses to return bodies for burial.

The Islamic Republic’s violent suppression of protests has repeatedly drawn international condemnation, from the Green Movement in 2009 to the Women, Life, Freedom demonstrations in 2022.

Most recently, the regime’s crackdown in January drew global attention, with human rights groups reporting that tens of thousands were killed in the streets by security forces during demonstrations over the country’s economic crisis.

Yet, the use of force against dissent is not new; it has been a central tool of control since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. With thousands arrested, held in secret prisons, and murdered by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards, the full scale of Tehran’s atrocities may never be known.

Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the United Nations, and countless other humanitarian organizations have warned of the regime’s systematic violation of human rights, which peaks every time the Iranian people demand change.

Farhad Abdullapour is one of many to keep his brother Hedayat’s memory alive. He spoke to the Post from Iraq with an AI-translator, where speaking to Israeli media could endanger his life, but rejected the offer to anonymize his story, as did all of those who spoke with the Post.

The two grew up in the Urmia Province, though Abdullapour was forced to leave in 2017 after repeated harassment by the Revolutionary Guards. An arrest for the crime of revolution against the state forced him to flee to Iraq, as his brother sat in prison.

Held in unsanitary conditions, denied the ability to make telephone calls or access newspapers, Hedayat could do nothing but imagine his freedom, his brother recounted. All he could speak about was his impending release, though he was sentenced to death in 2018.

IRGC: No power capable of weakening Iranian nation's resolve

03-05-2026

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) expresses gratitude towards the Iranian nation for its resolute defense of the country and its Islamic establishment through tremendous popular solidarity rallies.

In a statement on Saturday, the Corps pointed to the massive nationwide rallies, especially the one staged recently on the birth anniversary of the eighth Shia Imam, Imam Reza (AS), and the countrywide Janfada-e-Iran (Sacrifice for Iran) campaign that has seen millions sign up expressing readiness to defend the nation against adversaries with their lives.

"Iran and the Iranian people will never bow before their enemies, and no power is capable of weakening your resolve," it said, addressing the nation.

The IRGC hailed the countywide rallies as "epic and unparalleled," noting how the demonstrations sustained throughout the entire 40-day period of the United States' and the Israeli regime's latest bout of unprovoked aggression against the Islamic Republic and continue to last.

Bangladesh Army Aviation Group installing air defence and radar system at Lalmonirhat airbase

by Chandan Nandy

May 2, 2026

For the last two weeks, Bangladesh Army Aviation Group has been installing an air defence and radar system at Lalmonirhat air base where work on a massive hangar was completed late last year, Northeast News has confirmed from at least two military sources.

Security within the airbase, which is located less than 20 kms from the Bangladesh-India border with Cooch Behar district in West Bengal, has been upgraded considerably in view of the installation of the sensitive defence equipment.

The airbase is spread over 1,166 acre and the runway is 4-km-long. Originally built in 1931, the Second World War-vintage airbase remained abandoned for years, though it was used by the Pakistani forces during the 1971 war.

Plans were drawn up to construct a concrete platform and a commensurate building for emplacing the defence radar system that was to replace the aging system at the airbase.

While Indian military sources are aware of the air defence and radar installation process, they expressed consternation over the upgradation of the Bangladesh Air Force’s Bogura airbase where too an air defence and radar system is in the process of being installed.

Fadhlina orders review of SPM Moral Studies after furore over ‘unfair’ grading

By Malay Mail

03 May 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has ordered a full review of the SPM Moral Studies subject, stepping in after an outcry from parents and top-performing students whose university prospects are being jeopardised by unexpectedly poor grades in the paper.

Speaking at an event in Puchong today, Fadhlina acknowledged the “anxieties of parents and the community” and directed the Malaysian Examinations Syndicate to conduct the review.

The review comes after reports that many high-achieving students received unexpectedly poor grades for the subject, potentially jeopardising their eligibility for matriculation programmes which often have stringent grade requirements.

According to Muda vice-president Siva Prakash, a former exam board manager, a key problem is the lack of transparency in how the paper is graded.

Zaidi vows to resist personal demands in cabinet formation as blocs jostle for ministries

2026-05-03

BAGHDAD — Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi said he “will not respond to any personal demand” in forming his government, as negotiations over ministerial allocations intensified in his first week following designation.

In his first official remarks, Zaidi said he aims to form “a government of a strong and solid economy.” After meeting Kurdish leaders during a visit to the Kurdistan Region, he expressed optimism, saying he had received support from Erbil. Observers say his pace of engagement has been faster than expected, with some attributing it to his youth and others to strong domestic and international backing. If progress continues, he could complete cabinet formation before the end-of-May deadline to present it to parliament.

Negotiations have focused heavily on ministerial distribution. Based on early demands, Shiite groups alone could seek up to 20 ministries, with similar numbers expected for Sunni and Kurdish blocs under established power-sharing norms. The Badr Organization, holding around 20 seats, has indicated it seeks two ministries and 20 senior positions. The State of Law Coalition and Asaib Ahl al-Haq together may pursue six ministries, the Hikma Movement two, and the bloc led by outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, holding 46 seats, is aiming for at least five.

Muslim election candidates in Birmingham for George Galloway's Workers Party of Britain gave out sweets to celebrate Iran's 'success' against 'the Zionists'

Mughal-era 'supercomputer' sells for record £2m at London auction

By Pramod Thomas

May 02, 2026

The object, described as "perhaps the largest in existence" by Sotheby's head of Islamic and Indian Art Benedict Carter, was made in Lahore in the early 17th century for Aqa Afzal, a Mughal nobleman who administered the city. It had never been publicly exhibited before the auction, the BBC reported.

The instrument was crafted by two brothers, Qa'im Muhammad and Muhammad Muqim, who belonged to the celebrated Lahore School of astrolabe-making, one of the most renowned centres of its kind. It weighs 8.2kg, measures nearly 30cm in diameter and stands about 46cm tall - almost four times the size of a typical astrolabe from that period.

It was known to have been part of the royal collection of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II of Jaipur, and passed to his wife, Maharani Gayatri Devi, after his death, before moving into a private collection.

Dr Federica Gigante of the Oxford Centre for History of Science, Medicine and Technology told the BBC they were comparable to modern smartphones in their versatility.

A multi-modal deep learning framework for enhanced breast cancer diagnosis using mammograms and clinical data

03 May 2026

The fatality due to breast cancer is one of the most universal causes among women worldwide. The limited interpretation is due to tissue overlapping, high breast density and delicate lesion characteristics even though mammography is the standard screening tool. To overcome this universal challenges, we propose a multi-model deep learning framework that integrates mammographic image with structured clinical data (note: synthetic clinical variables were employed based on the known distributions of the risk factors due to the lack of real paired data) to achieve the accuracy in the diagnostics. Architectural developments establish promising directions for future multi-modal tactic with reliable clinical data. The architecture utilize a hierarchical fusion approach that incorporates with cross model attention mechanism and dynamic modality weighting to efficiently integrate heterogeneous features. Moreover, a region of interest care module is integrated to highlight crucial anatomical regions in mammograms. Experimental evaluations on a benchmark dataset validate a classification accuracy of 94.6% (95% CI: 92.8–96.4%) and an AUC of 0.963 (95% CI: 0.951–0.975), expressively overtaking prevailing baseline models (p<0.01). These results suggested the significant potential of projected architectural framework as a proof-of-concept for steadfast and easily explainable clinical decision supporting tools.

Juma Mosque of Sabunchu: a timeless jewel of Absheron architecture A historical insight on Caliber.Az

03 May 2026

On the Absheron Peninsula, there are numerous beautiful mosques built in the refined traditions of the Shirvan–Absheron architectural school, known for its strictness, nobility, and remarkable harmony. One of these mosques is located in Sabunchu — a settlement with a rich history and particular significance for Baku.

Sabunchu gained particular prominence during the oil boom, becoming one of the key centres of oil production, attracting people from all over the Russian Empire. An important role in the development of the settlement was also played by the first narrow-gauge railway, originally intended for transporting oil to urban refineries, which transformed Sabunchu into a vibrant, dynamic, and multicultural hub. It was precisely in this historically rich environment that the mosque acquired a special place, serving not only as a religious building but also as a cultural landmark.

The mosque was built by Bashir Bey Ashurbeyov in 1897. It became an expressive example of architecture in which restrained monumentality, clear geometric forms, and finely balanced decorative details are harmoniously combined. According to some researchers and architectural historians, the project may have been designed by the architect Mashadi Suleymanov, whose name is associated with several significant buildings of that period.

Particular attention is drawn to the main entrance, designed as a tall pointed arch portal. It highlights the central axis of the composition and serves as a key element of the façade. The portal is framed by austere yet expressive stone surfaces with decorative elements.

Trump casts doubt on Iran’s new peace proposal

By Jones Hayden

May 3, 2026

U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday said he received a new Iranian proposal to end the war, but he expressed doubt over its prospects.

"I will soon be reviewing the plan that Iran has just sent to us, but can’t imagine that it would be acceptable in that they have not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done to humanity, and the world, over the last 47 years," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Tehran has sent Washington a 14-point proposal via Pakistan in response to a nine-point U.S. proposal, according to a report by the semi-official Iranian news outlet Tasnim.

Trump says US to cut troop presence in Germany 'a lot further than 5,000'

03-05-2026

US President Donald Trump has said that the United States plans to reduce its troop presence by "a lot further than 5,000 troops" following a decision to scale back forces in Germany.

"We're going to cut way down, and we're cutting a lot further than 5,000," Trump told reporters in the US state of Florida on Saturday when asked about the move to withdraw troops from Europe.

His comments came after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticised the US for lacking a clear exit strategy in the Iran war, arguing that Americans were being "humiliated" by the Iranian leadership during negotiations.

Roots and Rupture: Trump withdraws forces from land of his forebears after clash with Merz

May 2, 2026

TOI correspondent from Washington: In a move steeped in geopolitical tension and personal irony, US President Donald Trump, whose grandfather emigrated from Germany, giving him one of the closest generational ties to the country of any modern American leader, has ordered the withdrawal of roughly 5,000 American troops from Germany after a public clash with Chancellor Friedrich Merz over Washington’s conduct of the war in Iran. The Pentagon said the drawdown would be completed over six to twelve months following what it described as a “thorough review” of US force posture in Europe. But officials on both sides of the Atlantic acknowledge the timing is anything but routine. It follows Merz’s unusually blunt criticism of the US campaign, in which he said Washington had entered the conflict “without any strategy whatsoever” and suggested Iran was outmanoeuvring and humiliating the US diplomatically.

US officials called the remarks “inappropriate and unhelpful,” suggesting the drawdown was a punitive measure to send a message to Nato partners who are not measuring up to Trump’s expectations. Trump himself lashed out at Merz, saying in one social media post, “The Chancellor of Germany should spend more time on ending the war with Russia/Ukraine (Where he has been totally ineffective!), and fixing his broken Country, especially Immigration and Energy, and less time on interfering with those that are getting rid of the Iran Nuclear threat, thereby making the World, including Germany, a safer place!”

German officials, for their part, signalled the decision did not come as a complete surprise given the growing rift in the trans-Atlantic alliance, with Spain, France, Italy, and UK increasingly ticked off with the Trump tempests. The move will affect an army brigade combat team and other units, reversing part of the post-2022 surge of US forces to Europe following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But also casts a shadow over US commitment to Nato, an alliance Trump has repeatedly criticized as imbalanced and overly dependent on American power.

Germany is not just another host nation. With roughly 35,000 US troops and between 20 and 40 military installations, it is the central hub of American military operations in Europe, and hosts the largest concentration of US troops abroad after Japan (50,000). Facilities such as Ramstein Air Base and the headquarters of US European Command and US Africa Command underpin operations extending far beyond the continent, including missions in the Middle East and Africa. Across Europe, the US maintains about 65,000 to 70,000 troops, meaning Germany alone hosts more than half of the American military footprint on the continent.

There is an unmistakable irony in Trump’s latest confrontation with Berlin. Of all modern American presidents, he has among the closest generational ties to Germany. His grandfather, Friedrich Trump, emigrated from the German village of Kallstadt in the late 19th century, making Trump, whose original family name is said to be Drumpf, a relatively recent descendant compared to predecessors like Eisenhower and Nixon, whose German ancestry is more distant.

MS NOW's Alex Witt taken aback as Trump war creates 'domino effect of absolute misery'

Robert Davis

May 2, 2026

MS NOW host Alex Witt was shocked on Saturday as President Donald Trump's war in Iran created a "domino effect of absolute misery" for Americans at home.

Reports indicated that Spirit Airlines canceled all its flights on Saturday as it ceased operations. The budget airline cited rising jet fuel prices stemming from Trump's war for its decision, but that didn't help the thousands of Americans stranded at airports across the country.

MS NOW reporter Laura Haefeli reported that about 277 flights were canceled on Saturday, including 34 out of Newark International Airport in New Jersey and 18 out of Laguardia Airport in New York. She spoke to one traveler who said she had spent $6,000 trying to get home.

2026/05/03

Washington, May 3 (SANA) U.S. President Donald Trump said he will review a proposal from Iran aimed at ending the war but indicated it is unlikely to be acceptable.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he would soon examine the plan submitted by Tehran, adding he could not see it being accepted, arguing Iran “has not yet paid a sufficient price for what they have done to humanity and the world over the past 47 years.”

Speaking at a press conference in West Palm Beach, Florida, Trump said he had been briefed on the broad outlines of Iran’s response to a U.S. proposal, noting that the “exact wording” would be provided later.

He also suggested military operations against Iran could resume, saying “that could happen,” and warned Tehran could face a prolonged period to rebuild its capabilities if the confrontation continues.

By Justina Otio

May 2, 2026

Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Buba Galadima has urged Nigerians to defend their votes in the 2027 elections with “bottles and jerry cans of kerosene”.

Also, he hinted that key opposition figures, such as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, would leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) by Monday for a new political platform.

According to Galadima, “Salvaging a country from the hands of fascists like this is not an easy thing. It needs sacrifice, strategy and the use of the internet.

ADC Leaders Move To Stop Peter Obi, Kwankwaso’s Defection

By Rachel Okporu Fadoju

May 3, 2026

African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders are reportedly making moves to stop the planned defection of former presidential candidates, Peter Obi and  Rabiu Kwankwaso, from the opposition coalition party.

Naija News reports that there have been speculations that Peter Obi and Kwankwaso are seriously considering leaving the ADC for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) next week in pursuit of their quest to contest the 2027 presidential election on a joint ticket.

Recall that former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, have publicly spoken about being interested in the ADC 2027 presidential ticket.

Peter Obi, Kwankwaso defection still under probability – NDC

By John Owen Nwachukwu

May 2, 2026

Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Abdulmumin Ohiare Abdulsalam, has said that the defection of Peter Obi and Musa Kwankwaso from the African Democratic Congress, ADC, to the party remains uncertain.

Reacting to the development in a statement on Saturday, he said, “My recent response to rare inquiry by a print journalist regarding the possibility of defections of the duo of Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, both of the ADC, dwelt more on the realm of probability rather than certainty.

“This unequivocal clarification of the party is coming on the heels of a politically sensitive reportage by a print media which some media houses and/or news channels are already referencing and getting over-sensational of in the public space.
