Pandits divided over Muslim ‘outreach’ as Kashmir Valley visit sparks return debate

Kashmiri Pandit groups have locked horns with each other after a large group of visiting Pandits, many of them NRIs, made conciliatory gestures towards local Muslims, with Jammu-based Pandits criticising the visit as a government-sponsored tour intended to promote what they called a "fake narrative of normality".

Seven Pandit groups led by the Global Kashmir Pandit Diaspora (GKPD) are touring the Valley, calling it the first community initiative to the region since their displacement beginning in 1990. At a two-day conclave at Srinagar's SKICC, they adopted a Pragaash (the first light) resolution on Sunday, presenting a "comprehensive blueprint demanding justice, recognition and a permanent return to the Valley".

GKPD head Surinder Koul told a media conference in Srinagar on Monday that the blueprint includes creating a township centred on universities, healthcare and medical tourism, designed for members of all communities. He said there would be no colonisation but something in which every Indian would take pride — mindful that such proposals are seen by local Muslims as magnets for settling non-locals to change the region's demography.

Surinder said the decades-long insurgency exacted a heavy price from both Muslims and Pandits, claiming that while Pandits were targeted because of their faith, Muslims were targeted for being part of the Indian apparatus.

Utpal Koul, another organiser of the event, said Kashmir was so peaceful before militancy that the place recorded one murder in 20 years. He said nobody ate for days when that killing took place. Speaking about the bonhomie that existed between the communities, he said Pandits in Sopore played a key role in the election of Syed Ali Shah Geelani twice to the Assembly because they thought he was the "most gentleman".

Geelani was a key leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami, which favoured Kashmir’s accession to Pakistan, while also fighting elections. The group has been banned multiple times, the last in 2018 ahead of the abrogation of Article 370.

The visiting group was targeted by Jammu-based Panun Kashmir, which has been fighting for the creation of a separate homeland for Pandits in the Valley. Its convenor Agnishekhar said the visiting Pandits had echoed the recent statement of LG Manoj Sinha in which he exonerated ordinary Muslims from culpability over the community’s displacement.

"(Then) who did it? Who are you fooling? It (visit) was a government-sponsored and facilitated move. We reject it. They have no representative character. These NRI groups are not representatives of Kashmiri Pandits," he said, calling Panun Kashmir the only “geopolitical voice” of Kashmiri Pandits.

US says Hormuz to be toll-free under Iran deal

June 16, 2026

Above, vessels at the Strait of Hormuz, as seen from Musandam, Oman on June 15, 2026. The Strait of Hormuz bottleneck is an immediate priority during the 60-day period to for the US and Iran to seal a full-scale peace deal. (Reuters)

-----------

WASHINGTON: The United States said Monday that ships will move toll-free through the Strait of Hormuz under an Iran peace deal signed by President Donald Trump, and insisted Tehran would have to fulfill its commitments before getting any economic benefits.

They included a possible $300 billion reconstruction fund for the war-battered country, but the release of funds will be “tied to performance,” a senior Trump administration official said in a call with reporters.

Trump, US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf electronically signed the so-called memorandum of understanding (MoU) Sunday, the officials said.

“The president wanted to sign it personally because he wanted to show his dedication to the process,” one of the US officials said on condition of anonymity.

But Vance admitted the brief outline deal kicks the thorniest issues — especially Iran’s nuclear program — down the road.

“The MoU is about a page and a half, so it is a very general document,” Vance told CNN.

He later said on NBC that US and international nuclear inspectors will be allowed back into Iran to help destroy its enriched uranium.

Vance will lead technical talks this week and attend a physical signing ceremony expected in Geneva, Switzerland.

Trump, attending the G7 summit in France, said the text would likely be released after Friday — but the US officials said it would be “put out in the next 24-48 hours.”

Hormuz normal in ‘couple of weeks’?

The signing will kick off a 60-day period in which Tehran and Washington will try to hammer out a full-scale peace deal.

“We want to put the nuclear discussions up front,” a US official said on the call.

But the Strait of Hormuz bottleneck is an immediate priority due to the global economic effects from the spike in oil prices.

Vance told CNBC there was an understanding with Iran that the strait would reopen “in a toll-free way for the long term, and that’s the sort of thing that we’re going to figure out in these technical negotiations.”

Trump himself said the critical strait would be “completely open” from Friday but added there was still “hunting” going on to ensure it was de-mined.

Shipping traffic should return to pre-war levels “over the next couple of weeks” but there had already been a “substantial increase in traffic,” the first US official said.

However, Iran’s foreign ministry said Monday that the deal would allow it to charge maritime service fees on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, rather than imposing “tolls.”

‘Zero’ funds released

Uncertainty also surrounds other key aspects of the deal, including Iran’s access to its frozen funds and relief from sanctions.

The issue is politically sensitive for Trump because he has alleged that a deal signed under Democrat Barack Obama — which Trump scrapped in 2018 — gave Tehran too much money.

“The very simple fact is zero dollars of frozen assets have been released by the United States or any other country,” the first US official said.

“We discussed the possibility of releasing frozen funds, sanctions relief, a big $300 billion fund to rebuild their country, and all of these things are going to be tied to performance,” added the second official.

Vance said no US taxpayer money — “they never get a dime” — will go to Iran under the deal and argued that Americans stand to benefit from lifting of sanctions against Iran by bringing it back into the international economy.

“There’s a lot of benefit there, not American money, but there’s a lot of economic prosperity that can flow from that,” Vance told Fox News late Monday.

As part of a flurry of interviews to talk up the deal, he told NBC that US and UN nuclear inspectors will be allowed to enter Iran.

“In fact, one of the core parts of the agreement is that the (International Atomic Energy Agency) and the United States are going to help Iran destroy the highly enriched stockpile, and that’s something that’s spelled out very clearly” in the MoU, Vance said.

Saudi specialists prepare to replace Kaaba’s Kiswah ahead of Islamic New Year

June 15, 2026

Saudi specialists are carrying out the final stages of replacing the Kiswah, the black silk covering of the Holy Kaaba, in an annual process that coincides with the start of the new Hijri year. (SPA)

----------

MAKKAH: Saudi specialists are carrying out the final stages of replacing the Kiswah, the black silk covering of the Holy Kaaba, in an annual process that coincides with the start of the new Hijri year.

The replacement of the Kiswah is one of the most significant rituals associated with the Grand Mosque and marks the culmination of months of work at the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Kaaba's Covering in Makkah.

The new Kiswah is produced through a series of stages that include preparing, dyeing and weaving natural silk before it is embroidered with Qur’anic verses using gold- and silver-plated threads and assembled for installation.

As the date for the replacement approaches, teams of Saudi technicians and specialists oversee the transfer and installation of the new covering around the Kaaba.

The operation requires extensive planning and technical expertise, including the use of specialized lifting and securing mechanisms to ensure the embroidered panels and decorative elements are installed with precision.

Saudi authorities said the process reflects decades of investment in national expertise dedicated to serving Islam’s holiest site.

The annual replacement is carried out by trained personnel familiar with the Kiswah’s construction and installation requirements, with teams working to ensure the covering is fitted according to strict technical standards.

For many of those involved, participation in the operation is regarded as a unique honor, as they work in close proximity to the Kaaba during one of the most symbolic events on the Islamic calendar.

The Kiswah replacement combines traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing and engineering techniques, helping preserve a centuries-old practice while maintaining the appearance and symbolic significance of the Holy Kaaba for millions of Muslims around the world.

Once installed, the new Kiswah will remain in place for the coming year, representing the culmination of months of work by Saudi artisans, technicians and engineers dedicated to the care of the Two Holy Mosques.

‘Trump has sold us out’: Israelis react with anger and anxiety to new Iran deal

15 Jun, 2026

After more than three and a half months of fighting and intense back-and-forth negotiations, US President Donald Trump announced that Washington and Tehran, under Pakistani mediation, have reached a final agreement to end hostilities between them.

The deal is expected to be signed in Geneva on June 19.

According to reports, the memorandum of understanding stipulates that upon signing, both sides will declare an immediate, complete, and permanent end to all hostilities across the region, including in Lebanon. The blockade on Iran would be lifted, Washington would commit not to interfere in Iran’s domestic affairs, refrain from increasing troop levels in the region, and release half of Iran’s frozen assets, an amount totaling approximately $12 billion.

In exchange, Iran would reaffirm its commitment to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and confirm that it will never produce, develop or acquire nuclear weapons. Tehran would also reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial maritime traffic within 30 days, according to arrangements specified by Iran.

Israel has not taken the news lightly. Opposition leader Yair Lapid said that the emerging agreement achieves “none of Israel’s goals.”

“The regime survives, the missile program remains intact, and Iran retains the ability to rebuild its nuclear program. This is a complete failure by Netanyahu, and in the process he is turning Israel into a client state that takes orders on matters of its own national security.”

Another opposition figure, Yair Golan, was equally blunt, describing the policy as a failure.

”Trump is signing an agreement that funnels billions of dollars to the Ayatollahs’ regime, leaves the nuclear infrastructure intact, preserves the ballistic threat as it is, and throws a lifeline to the murderous regime in Tehran.”

But the frustration is not limited to politicians.

Frustrated and disappointed

Conversations with ordinary Israelis paint a picture of disappointment, anxiety, and a growing sense that a historic opportunity may have been squandered.

Mor Cohen, a 37-year-old resident of Tel Aviv, believes the agreement has missed a chance “to finish the job.”

Her concerns are not without basis. According to estimates, before the war Iran possessed roughly 3,000 missiles, including long-range systems capable of traveling up to 2,000 kilometers. Although the conflict reportedly cut that arsenal in half, the remaining 1,500 missiles still represent a serious threat to Israel.

Nor have Israel’s nuclear concerns been fully addressed. While Washington repeatedly insisted that Iran would “never have nuclear weapons,” it offered no concrete guarantees to Israel. Nor did American officials directly address the issue of Iran’s regional proxies, namely Hezbollah in the north and the Houthis in the south, both of which continue to challenge Israel through sporadic rocket and drone attacks.

said Maor Attias, a 56-year-old resident of Haifa. “Americans simply don’t understand the Middle East. Iran fed them a narrative, and they bought it, either because they genuinely believed it or because they were tired of dealing with the conflict. Midterm elections are coming up, and politicians need the support of their voters. In this equation, Israel sits at the bottom of the priority list.”

Mor shares that assessment, arguing that American foreign policy is ultimately driven by interests rather than alliances.

”Trump has his own agenda. Today he may be Netanyahu’s best friend. Tomorrow he could be Kim Jong Un’s best friend if that serves his interests. It all depends on what benefits him personally and politically.”

For many Israelis, such fears are reinforced by past examples.

In 2021, thousands of Afghans who worked alongside US forces, as interpreters, guides, and government partners, were left behind during America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan. Many later faced retaliation from the Taliban, prompting criticism from veterans, lawmakers, and policy analysts.

Two years earlier, in 2019, Trump ordered US troops to pull back from parts of northern Syria, paving the way for Turkish military operations against Kurdish forces that had served as Washington’s primary ground partner in the fight against ISIS.

Not easy prey

That sense of abandonment came at a heavy cost for both the Kurds and the Afghans. Yet Mor and Maor believe Israel, unlike those allies, would not be easy prey.

”We are well-equipped, highly trained and determined to survive,” Maor said. “With or without American support, we will remain resilient and do whatever is necessary to defend ourselves.”

Mor agrees.

Those sentiments come as, earlier today, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a written statement signaling that western Jerusalem is prepared to respond forcefully if Iran intervenes in any future confrontation involving Hezbollah.

“We will not compromise on Israel’s supreme security interests or the protection of our citizens, and we will not withdraw from the security zones,” the statement said. “If Iran attacks Israel because of events in Lebanon, we will strike it with full force and clearly demonstrate the disparity in power between us,” it concluded.

Whether Israel would have the freedom to act independently, however, remains an open question.

Israel is the largest recipient of American military assistance, and any serious rift with Washington could carry significant consequences. During the Gaza war, President Joe Biden temporarily paused shipments of certain heavy munitions, including 2,000-pound bombs, over concerns regarding civilian casualties in densely populated areas.

Trump could choose a similar course if Israel acts against Washington’s wishes.

Not everyone, however, sees the agreement as a strategic defeat.

For some Israelis, the prospect of avoiding another large-scale conflict outweighs the concerns surrounding the deal.

Simply unsustainable

Lilach Kalderon, a 40-year-old mother of three, says that the war with Iran has taken a severe emotional toll on ordinary families.

”The war with Iran was deeply traumatic, especially for families like mine. My husband serves in the reserves, and worrying about his safety kept me awake night after night. When we heard about the agreement, our family felt genuine relief because it means lives may be spared and soldiers will not be forced to spend fifty or more consecutive days serving across multiple fronts.”

Some experts are equally unconvinced that Israel could sustain a prolonged military campaign even if it chose to act independently.

Amir Oren, one of Israel’s veteran military and security analysts, argues that the country’s ability to wage a long war against either Iran or Hezbollah is constrained by both strategic and political realities.

“In the case of Iran, obviously regime change is not achievable, as assassinations did not have the desired effect and no revolution ensued. Destroying nuclear targets proved to have some effect but not for long. Ditto, ballistic missile infrastructure.

Therefore, short of an emergency surgical operation against an existential peril, such as a nuclear-tipped missile ready to be launched, a campaign would not be sustainable, with domestic support quickly denied the government, if headed by the untrustworthy Netanyahu.”

“As for Lebanon, there is a constant public outcry at the harassment Hezbollah manages to present to Galillee communities, and there is a demand that the government do away with the Iranian-backed Shiite terror organization, but this is far easier said than done. Short of a full occupation of Lebanon – which neither the Israeli public, nor any global or Arab power, will support – Hezbollah will be able to regroup and rocket from areas outside of Beirut and South Lebanon. A diplomatic arrangement, mobilizing the moderate government of Lebanon against Hezbollah, seems like an optimal way out of the crisis.”

“The IDF, if deployed properly and on alert, having learned the terrible lessons of October 7, will always be able to defend Israel proper, but as for offensive operations, attrition wars or casualty-ridden campaigns – there is little to suggest that they would be sustainable.”

As diplomats prepare to gather in Geneva, the agreement may have succeeded in stopping a war. Whether it has secured a lasting peace, or merely postponed the next conflict, remains a question that hangs heavily over Israel.

One thing is certain: while the guns may be falling silent, the battle over what this deal means for Israel’s future has only just begun.

‘Terrorists Must Surrender Or Be Eliminated’ – Nigeria Presidency

June 15, 2026

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, has reiterated the government’s commitment to ending terrorism in Nigeria.

Naija News reports that the presidential spokesperson commended the nation’s security forces for their efforts in the fight against terrorists, kidnappers, bandits and other criminals operating in the country.

He, however, added that no matter how long it takes, the only option is for the terrorists to surrender or be eliminated.

He emphasized that President Tinubu will never surrender to the demands of the terrorists.

“These victories, arrests and pressing against terrorists and kidnappers by our soldiers must be praised and recorded as part of the security success of the Tinubu administration. President Tinubu has since vowed that we will not surrender. The terrorists must surrender or be decimated,” he wrote on his 𝕏 Account in reaction to a confirmation from the Nigerian Army that troops recorded a major operational success with the arrest of a suspected high-profile arms trafficker linked to an interstate illegal weapons network.

Recall that President Tinubu expressed shock over the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of terrorists in Katsina State.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President noted that General Abubakar, after a distinguished career in the military, retired a few years ago, adding that he was on his way to his hometown when the hoodlums captured him.

The statement said that “While the terrorists have done their worst, the President wants them to know that the government will never bow to their demand to release their members held by our security agencies.”

Focus on AI, quantum computing, not political squabbles, Anwar tells Malaysians

16 Jun 2026

MUAR, June 16 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that efforts to drive Malaysia forward through foreign investments, Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, and quantum computing must remain the government’s primary focus, rather than political disputes.

Anwar said this approach is currently being implemented through government efforts to bring investments in AI and data centres into the country, as well as exploring quantum computing technology during his recent visit to Japan.

According to him, these steps will enable Malaysia to become a highly competitive nation for the benefit of future generations.

“For our children, their future lies in AI and quantum. So we must work toward that. If politics is just about fighting day in and day out over Chinese, Malay, Indian, temples, and mosques, just endless bickering, when are we going to take care of this country?” he said during his speech at the PH Grand Rally “Justice for the People of Johor” with the Prime Minister here last night.

Also present were PKR Vice-President Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Johor PH Chairman Aminolhuda Hassan.

Accordingly, the Prime Minister called on all citizens to work together to help the government develop the nation.

“Rise up Malaysians — Malay, Chinese, Indian — work together, build this nation, elevate this country into a great nation, because we can do it. Who says we can’t do it? People around the world are looking at Malaysia now. We don’t even need to campaign; people are coming here to invest,” he said.

In the meantime, Anwar, who is also the PKR President and PH Chairman, reminded political leaders and parties to collectively think about the best future and development for the people instead of exploiting sentiments of hatred.

“That is why I say, for politics to succeed, people must be smart and listen to the people’s problems. Do not exploit sentiments of hatred toward others, do not. Think about what will happen to our country,” he said. — Bernama

3.7 Million Afghan Children Face Acute Malnutrition, UN Warns

By Fidel Rahmati

June 15, 2026

More than 3.7 million children in Afghanistan are facing acute malnutrition, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned on Monday, highlighting the growing severity of the country’s humanitarian crisis.

In a new report, OCHA said millions of Afghan children are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition in 2026, underscoring the urgent need for increased humanitarian assistance and nutrition support across the country.

The agency said immediate funding and the rapid implementation of nutrition programmes are essential to prevent avoidable deaths and long-term health consequences among vulnerable children.

According to the report, humanitarian needs remain extremely high, with hundreds of thousands of children expected to experience severe and life-threatening forms of malnutrition.

OCHA also warned that approximately 1.2 million pregnant and breastfeeding women are projected to be affected by malnutrition during 2026, increasing risks for both mothers and infants.

The agency called for additional international support to expand access to nutrition services, strengthen healthcare interventions and prevent further deterioration of the situation.

Humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned that prolonged economic hardship, food insecurity and limited access to essential services continue to place millions of Afghans at risk, particularly women and children.

Afghanistan remains one of the world’s most severe humanitarian emergencies, with millions of people relying on humanitarian assistance to meet basic needs. Years of conflict, economic decline, climate-related shocks and widespread poverty have left many households unable to secure sufficient food, healthcare and livelihood opportunities.

Children and women have been among the groups most affected by the crisis. Humanitarian agencies have reported increasing levels of food insecurity, malnutrition and limited access to healthcare services, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas where poverty rates remain high.

UDF, IUML in a quandary over nomination of Non-Muslims to Waqf Board

June 15, 2026

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) seem to be in a quandary over the mandatory nomination of two non-Muslim members to the Kerala State Waqf Board. They are in a political dilemma ever since a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Kerala High Court by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state Vice President Shone George, challenging the non-inclusion of non-Muslims on the Board.

Under Section 41 of the central Waqf (Amendment) Act, the appointment of at least two non-Muslim members to State Waqf Boards is legally mandated. This rule aims to introduce secular oversight, functional diversity, and structural accountability into the management of public Waqf assets.

Through an order issued on February 4, 2026, the state government formed an 11-member Board but appointed only nine members—all of whom are Muslim. The remaining two seats were left vacant for later appointments.

Shone George, in his petition, argues that operating without non-Muslim representation directly violates the statute. He asserts that it strips the Board of legal jurisdiction, rendering all its current supervisory and administrative rulings null and void.

The High Court has sought the state government’s stance on the petition. This places immediate legal pressure on the political system to find a resolution, leaving very little room for strategic delays or political maneuvering.

The situation creates a complex double-edged sword for the IUML and its broader coalition, the UDF. Strongly supporting or smoothly facilitating the nomination of non-Muslims to manage Islamic religious and charitable properties risks significant blowback from their primary Muslim electorate and allied religious organizations.

Conversely, if the IUML and UDF aggressively oppose the statutory requirement, they risk being framed as religiously rigid. This would compromise their secular political platform and give political leverage to opponents like the BJP

Meanwhile, the Union government has issued a notice to the Kerala Waqf Board seeking an explanation for uploading the disputed Munambam land on the Umeed portal, the centralised digital registry of waqf properties. It has directed the board to respond within five days.

The notice follows complaints received by the Union government over the inclusion of around 404 acres of disputed land at Munambam in Ernakulam district on the portal. The land was reportedly entered into the registry last month using the Board’s special powers.

Third-Front talk returns in UP as AIMIM explores Dalit-Muslim consolidation

Jun 16, 2026

Lucknow: A day after All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi signalled his party’s willingness to join hands with opposition forces in upcoming UP Assembly elections, political arc lights shifted to another alliance factor that could potentially play a vital role in reshaping the state’s political landscape.

Political observers said that Owaisi may well be looking to consolidate the Dalit and the non-Yadav OBC bloc to strengthen its position in UP.

Sources said that while the AIMIM chief took on Samajwadi Party by holding the rally in Matera, the Assembly seat that has been a bastion of SP, he remained soft on Mayawati’s BSP and Chandrashekhar Azad’s Azad Samaj Party.

The AIMIM has recently publicly stated that the BSP was a “natural ally” in states like Uttar Pradesh. The AIMIM ranks have, in fact, been advocating for a coalition with the BSP, aiming to consolidate Dalit and Muslim votes to challenge the ruling parties and provide an alternative. Experts said that if even a portion of these groups can be consolidated, it could create a meaningful vote bloc. The challenge, however, is converting social arithmetic into electoral chemistry.

As a matter of fact, the AIMIM, BSP and Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) came together to form a third front called the Grand Democratic Secular Front (GDSF) in the 2020 Bihar elections. The front, however, performed poorly overall — out of the 243 seats in the Bihar Assembly, the alliance managed to win only six seats.

Interestingly, BSP has officially decided to contest the 2027 UP Assembly elections alone, strictly ruling out any political alliances.

Analysts point out that Owaisi raised the pitch strategically from Bahraich, which has been witnessing a long historical contest between Maharaja Suhaildev and Syed Salar Masud Ghazi, the 11th-century warrior who participated in the early Ghaznavid campaigns in northern India.

The BJP, sources said, has invested considerable political capital in the Suheldev narrative over the past decade. Owaisi’s intervention in this region could thus be interpreted as an attempt to challenge BJP’s ideological influence while simultaneously testing the opposition’s ability to mobilise minorities.

Not surprisingly, the BJP has decided to intensify its groundwork in Bahraich and beyond through the ongoing campaign marking completion of 12 years of NDA rule at the Centre.

BJP district president Brijesh Pandey said that the party has already stepped up its campaign in all 14 blocks of Bahraich to reach out to every section of society. “We have been relying on the work of our workers and public welfare schemes of the Yogi Adityanath govt,” he said, while speaking to TOI.

A senior BJP leader said that Owaisi’s positioning would essentially be bothering the Samajwadi Party and its ally Congress, which have been relying essentially on consolidation of Muslim votes. “The opposition parties would eventually be contesting among themselves,” said UP BJP spokesperson Hero Bajpai.

In the case of UP, however, the AIMIM has hardly proved to be a challenger. In the 2022 Assembly elections, the party contested on 95 seats and lost deposits on all.

Its vote share was less than 0.5%.

Chhattisgarh Waqf Board chief’s WhatsApp hacked, fraudsters dupe contacts of Rs 7.7 lakh

Ejaz Kaiser

15 Jun 2026

RAIPUR: Online fraudsters hacked the WhatsApp account of Salim Raj, the Chairman of the Chhattisgarh State Waqf Board, and used his identity to swindle Rs 7.72 lakh from his close associates and contacts.

The Raipur Cyber Cell has registered a First Information Report (FIR) and launched a full-scale investigation to track down the perpetrators.

According to police sources, after successfully compromising Raj's WhatsApp account, the cyber criminals gained access to his contact list containing approximately 12,000 numbers. The hackers then blasted desperate mass messages to these contacts, claiming an urgent financial emergency.

The fraudulent messages asserted that Dr. Raj's UPI application was temporarily malfunctioning and requested immediate online transfers of Rs 56,000, promising to return the money quickly.

Given the Waqf Board Chairman's prominent official position, several recipients trusted the message's authenticity and reportedly extended help. Initial police investigations reveal that at least 12 individuals transferred Rs 56,000 each into the accounts provided by the fraudsters.

Furthermore, a close friend of Raj residing in Bilaspur district fell prey to the scam and transferred Rs 1 lakh, bringing the total defrauded amount to Rs 7,72,000.

The scam unraveled when a few alert contacts directly called Dr. Salim Raj to confirm if he had received the funds, only for the Chairman to realise he had been locked out of his account and that his identity was being weaponised.

Following a complaint, the Raipur Cyber Cell immediately took over the case. Cyber security experts are currently analysing technical evidence and tracing the hackers' digital footprints.

"This appears to be a well-planned cyber heist," a senior police official stated.

Cockroach party founder Abhijeet Dipke assaulted in Jaipur, calls it ‘intimidation tactics’

15.06.26

Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke was allegedly slapped by some people while supporters carried him on their shoulders during a protest in Jaipur, police said on Monday.

Two youths have been detained and further investigation is underway, officials said.

The incident occurred at Shaheed Smarak where a large number of youths had gathered to protest over issues such as the alleged NEET paper leak and unemployment.

Following the incident, Dipke addressed the gathering and raised slogans against divisive politics, urging people not to be divided along religious or caste lines.

Later, in a video message on X, the CJP chief alleged that this (attack on him) is a tactic by those who want to "disrupt our movement".

"But we cockroaches will not be intimidated by these tactics. (Union Education Minister) Dharmendra Pradhan will have to resign...this is our only aim," he said.

"Don’t get distracted. Dharmendra Pradhan Must Resign!" he also wrote on X.

According to police and eyewitnesses, as Dipke arrived at the protest site and was being carried on supporters' shoulders, some youths in the crowd allegedly slapped him. Following the incident, his supporters caught hold of the accused and assaulted them before the police intervened.

The police later detained two youths in connection with the incident, officials said.

Videos of the incident have gone viral on social media.

The police said that one of the detained accused, identified as Rakesh Gurjar, claimed he was a nationalist while alleging that Dipke has a 'Jihadi' mindset and is misleading people. Gurjar said that paper leak is just an excuse.

Reacting to the incident, CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka alleged that Rajasthan has, in recent times, become a major centre for paper leaks.

He said the state, which produces many IITians and chartered accountants, is now witnessing a decline of its education system.

Ranka added that the gathering of youths at the protest site reflected growing concerns and asserted that efforts would be made to reform the education system.

Protesters carried placards with slogans against corruption and paper leaks, and demanded action on youth-related issues.

During the protest, slogans were raised demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

During his address, Dipke also announced that protesters would march to Delhi on June 20, asserting that they would not return without securing a resignation.

The Monday's protest concluded with the national anthem, after which Dipke was escorted to his vehicle by supporters amid chants of 'Vande Mataram' and "Bharat Mata ki Jai".

The Cockroach Janta Party will stage a protest in Nagpur on 16 June.

He would be arriving in the city on June 16, Dipke said in a video message on social media on Monday, and asked Nagpur residents including students and the youth to gather at Samvidhan Square at 4 pm for a peaceful demonstration.

Police are expecting the participation of more than 2,000 youths in the demonstration. Activists from Nagpur city and several districts of Vidarbha are expected to converge at the Samvidhan Chowk after appeals were circulated on social media.

Considering the expected crowd, police have stepped up security across key locations in Nagpur, an official said.

"We have made comprehensive arrangements to ensure that the protest is conducted peacefully. Adequate police personnel will be deployed at Samvidhan Chowk and other sensitive locations to maintain law and order," a senior officer said.

He said the security deployment includes four DCPs, three ACPs, 18 police inspectors, 45 APIs, and sub-inspectors, 470 male, and 170 female police personnel. Two Riot Control Platoon (RCP) units have also been kept on standby as a precautionary measure.

Police Commissioner Ravindrakumar Singal said the police are fully prepared to handle the situation.

"Everyone has the right to protest peacefully. However, any attempt to violate the law, create unrest, or disturb public peace will not be tolerated. Strict action will be taken against anyone found breaking the law," he said.

The demonstration was organised as part of CJP's campaign demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in major examinations, including NEET, CBSE, CUET and SSC.

The organisation has described its campaign as a peaceful constitutional movement aimed at highlighting concerns raised by students and job aspirants regarding examination processes and recruitment systems.

The protest has gained traction on social media in recent weeks, drawing attention from students and activists across the country. Dipke arrived in Jaipur late Sunday to oversee preparations for the protest. While local authorities initially declined permission for the demonstration, conditional approval was later granted.

The administration allowed the event with restrictions, including a cap on the number of participants. Officials stated that no more than 800 people would be permitted at the venue at any given time. Police also made extensive security arrangements and warned that action could be taken if the gathering exceeded the approved limit or if law and order was disrupted.

The campaign has also received support from activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has publicly backed the movement and said he would launch a six-week fast if Dipke were to be arrested. Earlier, CJP had announced on social media that Delhi Police had granted permission for a separate protest at Jantar Mantar, describing the campaign as part of a broader effort to press for accountability in the education sector.

TCS Nashik fallout': Muslims shrinking public footprint, curtailing own freedoms, say community members

Jun 15, 2026

NEW DELHI: When a colleague asks him about Islam, a young corporate professional has a standard response: "Google it."

A few years ago, he says, he would have happily explained Ramadan, fasting or Eid. Today, he avoids religious conversations altogether, not because he is confused, but because he is cautious, fearing that an innocuous conversation could one day be read as "preaching."

In the aftermath of the alleged religious conversion racket uncovered at TCS Nashik, where nine FIRs were filed alleging employees were targeted over “financial weakness” and “family issues” and gradually pushed toward conversion, many Muslims say even ordinary conversations about faith now feel risky.

Muzaffar Khan, a Bengaluru-based software development engineer whose videos advising Muslim youth on workplace conduct have gained traction on social media, says young professionals need to be especially careful in the current climate.

“People are easily influenced by fake news and propaganda against specific communities and often target them,” Khan told TOI. “Muslims should not give anyone any loophole or opportunity to misuse situations or attack us mentally and emotionally.”

Across offices, colleges and neighbourhoods, Islamic greetings and words like "Salam", "Alhamdulillah" and "Mashallah" are disappearing; Muslims avoid references to halal food, hijabs and beards are donned with caution, parents worry about their kids’ lunchboxes, and censoring themselves out of fear that a casual comment, an invitation, or a shared video could trigger a complaint, an FIR or worse.

Supreme Court advocate Shahrukh Alam sees such behavioural shifts as part of a broader social climate. "A Muslim saying something even vaguely critical can result in an FIR, while a far more provocative remark by someone from the majority community goes unregistered...Hate speech is not episodic but cumulative...there is growing self-censorship among Muslims. They are curtailing their own constitutional freedoms to avoid daily hostility.”

A Delhi-based employee ,who didn't want to be named, said: "Earlier, if someone asked me why we pray five times a day, I'd explain. Now I don't. I don't want anyone saying later that I was trying to convert them.”

The shift is visible even to those outside the Muslim community.

In Aligarh, farmer and local BDC election contestant Jeetu Baghel said, “Many of my Muslim friends have become reluctant to participate in public campaigns and protests. Earlier they would come together on issues like unemployment or inflation. Now they'd rather stay on the sidelines."

Religious scholars are also responding to the anxieties. Deobandi scholar and patron of Jamiyat Dawatul Muslimeen Maulana Qari Ishaq Gora advises young Muslims to be thoughtful rather than fearful.

"I believe a person should never feel compelled to hide who they are. But wisdom does not always require becoming a mirror in every setting...The strongest expression of one's identity is not the tongue but character," he says.

The caution comes amid anti-conversion laws in several states, high-profile arrests, bulldozer actions, social-media prosecutions and controversies around religious conversions—with a dozen Indian states where anti-conversion laws are now in force including UP, MP, Gujarat, Haryana and Karnataka.

After rally, memorandum to collector seeks to ‘preserve original identity’ of Bharuch mosque

Jun 15, 2026

A large number of people claiming to be followers of the 12th century saint Chakradhar Swami took out a rally in Bharuch on Monday and handed over a memorandum to the district collector demanding the “preservation of original identity” of the 700-year-old Jama Masjid – claiming that it was an ancient Jain temple and the birthplace of the saint who had moved to Maharashtra later.

The foot march happened days after the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which protects the mosque, wrote to the district administration to not allow any “large gathering” on June 10, even as the campaign was building up.

Under the banner of temple Shri Chakradhar Swami National Heritage Conservation Committee and several Jain organisations, a march was organised from Hostel ground to the district collectorate, covering nearly a kilometre.

Several followers of Chakradhar Swami from Amravati and other districts in Maharashtra participated along with local residents, holding placards and banners. Among the participants was Bhavesh Patel, who was released on bail after his conviction in the Ajmer Dargah blast case of 2007 investigated by the National Investigation Agency. Patel had by then become a self-styled godman, assuming the name of “Swami Muktanand”.

The representatives handed a memorandum to Bharuch Collector Navnath Gavhane and demanded preservation of the monument to its original structure.

The memorandum states that a drive was carried out to create public awareness in Gujarat and Maharashtra by the followers of Chakradhar Swami from May 18-23 . Signatures of over 35,000 were taken, along with their mobile phone numbers.

Muktanand Swami alias Bhavesh Patel of Bharuch said, “The Jama masjid has its origin in the birthplace of an ancient Jain temple, and the birthplace of Swami Chakradhar of Maharashtra. The Islamic rulers had converted the monument into a mosque. The Masjid is presently under the possession of the ASI. We have come to know that the rules and regulations of the ASI are not followed, as some people are involved in making changes in the existing structure. Actions should be taken against those who are involved in alterations or changes made to the historically protected monument.”

Bharuch district collector Dr. Navnath Gavhane said, “ There is no law-and-order situation. District Superintendent of Police, District magistrate office and ASI (Archeological Survey of India) officials are maintaining it. We have appealed to people to refrain from making any generalised comments about the monument or believing in rumours and misunderstandings. The ASI is a competent authority to decide about the monument.”

Lone-wolf attackers module gets bigger in MP

16 Jun 2026

Anuraag Singh, Ramashankar

BHOPAL/PATNA: The inter-state module of radicalised people—which could have been potential lone-wolf attackers—busted by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of the Madhya Pradesh Police on Friday appears to be bigger than what was earlier thought.

While further arrests were made from Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district and Rajasthan’s Alwar district, one more arrest was made in Bihar’s Madhubani on Monday, taking the number of the arrested to four.

The Madhya Pradesh and Bihar police arrested Izhar-ul-Haq, 65, who works as a teacher in a local madarsa, in a joint operation. The police are probing his role in the regrouping of a sleeper cell of the banned outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

His arrest may turn out to be the most important link in the lone-wolf attack case. Pankaj Kumar Darad, ADG of the Bihar ATS said that preliminary investigation and technical evidence indicated that Haq had connections with a Pakistan-based handler. The ATS recovered two Android mobile phones from his possession. Police are verifying his digital footprints.

The Madhya Pradesh ATS said that Haq was perhaps the head of the module, which comprised men from various parts of the country, who had been radicalised and were being motivated to turn into lone-wolf attackers.

According to sources, he was designated the amir, or the leader and commander of the module, whose job was to scout, radicalise and guide the recruits turn into lone-wolf attackers to strike chosen targets. Sources in the Madhya Pradesh Police said that Haq was in direct contact with overseas handlers.

A senior police official said, “A local court in Madhubani in Bihar has approved a 72-hours transit remand for taking Haq to Madhya Pradesh. The questioning of Haq along with three other men arrested from Bhopal, Saharanpur and Alwar will help us unravel the module, which working on highly destructive designs.”

The attackers’ module was busted by the Madhya Pradesh ATS, following inputs from Central intel agencies on June 12, with the arrest of Bhopal-based Mohammed Faraz, 35, who worked at a homeopathy clinic in old city’s Qazi Camp area.

A day later, the ATS sleuths arrested 38-years-old Naeem Abudullah Qureshi from Nanauta area Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district. Qureshi had studied with Faraz at a madrasa in Deoband in Saharanpur and inducted him into the module.

Faraz was given the name of slain Pakistani terrorist Khalid Saifullah to operate as a killer. Saifullah was the alleged mastermind of IISC (Bengaluri), RSS HQ (Nagpur) and CRPF camp (Rampur) blasts.

Query, reply on RSS registration as Priyank Kharge seeks transparency details

16.06.26

Karnataka home and IT minister Priyank Kharge has written to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat seeking clarification on the organisation’s legal status, structure and income sources.

In the letter posted on X, Priyank asked why the RSS had not yet registered itself. Priyank said an organisation that claims to have over 60,000 shakhas and crores of swayamsevaks across India and abroad must also uphold transparency, accountability and constitutional compliance.

Congratulating the RSS on completing 100 years, Priyank called upon the organisation to use the occasion not merely for celebration, but for constitutional introspection.

“As per Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha’s 2025-26 Karnataka report, the RSS has 4,127 daily shakhas, 1,389 weekly milans, 60 monthly mandalis, 2,194 Samajotsavas with 19.61 lakh participants and held 562 route marches with 2.21 lakh uniformed participants in the state. With such scale and influence, the RSS must clarify its legal status, registration, office-bearers, funding, expenditure, taxation and permissions for public activities,” Priyank wrote.

Responding to a question on the letter, Bhagwat said the RSS had nothing to hide and conducted its activities openly. “There are so many unregistered things going on, and we are not secretive. We work in open grounds. We call people and tell them what we do,” he said.

“Hindu Dharma is not registered. Many things are not registered. Those who want funds from the government require registration,” he said.

Syria says international undersea cable subjected to ‘act of sabotage’

June 16, 2026

CAIRO: Syria’s state-owned telecom operator said an international undersea cable between the city of Tartous and Egypt’s Alexandria was subjected to an “act of sabotage,” affecting Internet service for users across Syria.

Syrian Telecom told state-owned news agency SANA the maintenance of the cable and full resumption of services would take time, adding that the act cannot be separated from what it described as a “systematic sabotage campaign” targeting the country’s infrastructure.

Hezbollah says attacked ‘advancing’ Israeli force in southern Lebanon

June 16, 2026

BEIRUT: Lebanese militant group Hezbollah said on Monday it had attacked an Israeli force trying to advance in southern Lebanon despite the US-Iran agreement to end the Middle East war.

Fighters from the group “using rockets and drones” blocked an Israeli force consisting of an excavator and two Merkava tanks that was “advancing” in the vicinity of Kfar Tebnit town near the southern city of Nabatieh, Hezbollah said in a statement.

In another statement late Monday, it added: “The enemy army regrouped its forces in the vicinity of the crossing area by bringing in an armored force consisting of five Merkava tanks and four vehicles.

“The mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance targeted them with rocket barrages and artillery shells, and the clashes are still ongoing.”

Earlier on Monday, an Israeli drone targeted a car in the same area “killing its driver,” Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported, marking the first deadly strike since the agreement was announced.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric, said there had been fewer clashes on Monday.

“We just got an update from our peacekeeping colleagues at UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon), who report that from midnight until 4:00 p.m. local time today, UNIFIL observed a decrease in violence and exchanges of fire, recording 133 trajectories of projectiles and two airstrikes attributed to the IDF (Israel Defense Force).

“No trajectories from Hizbullah or non-State actors were reported during that time.”

Details of the agreement to end the Middle East war on all fronts have not been made public, but Iran and mediator Pakistan have both said it includes Lebanon.

Hezbollah drew the country into the Middle East war on March 2 with rocket fire at Israel to avenge the killing of Iran’s supreme leader in US-Israeli strikes.

Israel responded with airstrikes and a ground invasion that Lebanon says have killed more than 3,700 people and displaced more than one million others.

An official source told AFP that “Lebanon was not informed of the terms of the agreement or the time of the ceasefire.”

Products from illegal settlements on occupied Palestine land sold to Europe as ‘Israeli,’ researchers find

June 16, 2026

LONDON: Agricultural exports originating from illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank and the Golan Heights in Syria are routinely mislabeled as Israeli products when entering European markets, an investigation has found.

A report by legal rights group Global Echo, based on analysis of more than 30,000 export documents covering thousands of shipments to the UK and EU over an eight-year period, alleges that settlement-grown produce has regularly benefited from preferential trade arrangements that are supposed to be reserved for goods produced within Israel’s own internationally recognized borders.

The group said one in six shipments examined contained agricultural products originating from Israeli settlements, but at least 42 percent of those shipments were labeled as “Israeli” in origin.

Under trade rules agreed by Israel with the EU and the UK, Israeli goods are eligible for reduced tariffs. But any products originating from settlements in occupied territories are not eligible for this benefit because the settlements are considered illegal under international law by much of the international community.

“This isn’t an aberration and it’s not accidental,” Emily Schaeffer Omer-Man, Global Echo’s executive director, told The Guardian newspaper.

According to the investigation, exporters used several methods to obscure the origin of products from settlements. Some shipments reportedly listed settlement addresses while simultaneously classifying the goods as Israeli. Other cases allegedly involved the use of addresses inside Israel, or the mixing before export of settlement produce with products grown in Israel.

Global Echo said these practices shift responsibility for identifying settlement goods onto customs authorities in Europe and the UK.

The report, published last Wednesday, also raised concerns over certification procedures, alleging that some settlement products entered European markets using Israeli-issued organic and plant-health certificates despite being grown outside of Israel’s internationally recognized territory.

The investigation examined only a small proportion of Israel’s overall agricultural exports but identified approximately €13 million ($15 million) of allegedly mislabeled settlement produce.

Europe is Israel’s largest export market, with the EU accounting for nearly 30 percent of all exports. However, neither Israel nor European governments publish comprehensive data on the value of exports that originate from settlements.

Global Echo said that the mislabeling of settlement products allows exporters to benefit from lower tariffs, which means they are more competitively priced in European markets while reducing tariff revenues collected by importing countries.

The report, which comes as European governments continue to debate measures related to Israeli settlement activity in occupied Palestinian territories, also examined the broader impact of settlement agriculture on Palestinian communities.

Residents of the Jordan Valley interviewed during the investigation said settlement expansion had restricted access to farmland and water resources. Palestinian farmers also cited restrictions on movement and checkpoint closures as obstacles they face when transporting produce to local markets.

One farmer from the northern Jordan Valley said agricultural land owned by his family was incorporated into a nearby settlement decades ago and remains inaccessible.

Global Echo called on British authorities to review import-verification procedures and ensure that settlement goods do not improperly benefit from preferential tariff arrangements.

The group said it was prepared to take legal action if it believed current control measures were insufficient to prevent the mislabeling of settlement products entering the UK market.

US-Iran deal a ‘catastrophe’ for Israel, analysts say

June 15, 2026

JERUSALEM: The US-Iran pact to conclude the war is a significant strategic setback for Israel and underscores its waning influence in Washington, Israeli analysts said.

Although the accord remains incomplete and is expected to be finalized within 60 days, its preliminary framework has already raised concern in Israel.

Analysts argue it effectively locks in Iranian gains while deferring the most sensitive issue for Israel: its security.

According to former intelligence officer Danny Citrinowicz, this means the US-Iran deal amounts to nothing less than a “political and security catastrophe for the state of Israel.”

It is also a blow to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who once hoped to sail into October elections as the victor in campaigns against Hamas, Hezbollah, and Tehran — but instead is under fire for failing to attain Israel’s key war aims.

“We knew for quite a long time that it was going to be an agreement that would take into account most of the interests of the Iranians,” said Sima Shine, an analyst with Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies.

“The issues that are important to Israel, such as the nuclear one, are left for some future that we don’t know,” said Shine, also a former Israeli intelligence officer.

The US and Israel launched a joint campaign against Iran on Feb. 28.

Beyond leaving the nuclear question unresolved, Citrinowicz said the result of the conflict makes it unlikely that any future US president would risk renewed military action against Iran.

This, analysts say, effectively allows Tehran to emerge stronger after more than three months of conflict.

“At the end of the day, Iran is becoming stronger, and Israel has no ability to influence the US president’s decisions,” Citrinowicz argued.

Netanyahu has yet to publicly respond to the deal, but his coalition ally, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, has already dismissed it, saying Israel is “not bound” by the agreement.

“It’s a very, very, very bad development for Israel, and for Netanyahu specifically, who was, you know, Mr. Iran,” said Citrinowicz, referring to Netanyahu’s long history of antagonism with Iran.

“Mr. Iran is stuck with a deal that covers almost none of the issues that are important to Israel,” he said.

While analysts are not surprised by Israel’s absence from the negotiations, they said they are struck by what they see as its eroding influence in Washington.

“Israel never played a direct role in US-Iran negotiations, but simply weighed on the talks through DC,” said Michael Horowitz, an independent security analyst and expert on US-Israeli relations.

“But what’s surprising, and hints at Israel’s fading influence in Washington, is that Trump seems to simply have dashed Israel’s concerns,” he added.

“Not only did Trump ignore Israel, he effectively decided for Israel and without consulting or even warning it. We’re seeing who is in charge and who gets the final say here.”

Michael Milshtein, an expert on Israeli military affairs, said the agreement leaves Israel in a weaker position than before the war on all fronts.

“The only thing that Israel can do is to say, ‘OK, we accept the ceasefire, but let us have a say on the details of the deal, especially the nuclear project’,” Milshtein said.

“Netanyahu brought us to a point of very weak leverage,” he added, arguing that Israel has limited influence over both Washington and broader diplomatic processes.

“It seems that right now we are forced to accept any agreement with Iran, for example, but I assess very soon also with Lebanon and finally with Gaza,” he said, referring to two other theaters where Israeli forces are operating.

Lebanese mourn razed homes, livelihoods in southern city

June 15, 2026

NABATIEH, Lebanon: When Kamal Kamal heard a ceasefire deal had been agreed between Iran and the US, he rushed back to the southern city of Nabatieh only to find an Israeli strike had reduced his life’s work to rubble.

The city, usually home to some 90,000 people before the latest war between Israel and Hezbollah erupted on March 2, was largely deserted as Israel pressed its military offensive in the area in recent days.

Kamal fought back tears as he stared in stunned disbelief at the pile of rubble that used to be his roastery and warehouse for coffee and other products, after Israel pummeled the region with strikes and issued sweeping evacuation orders.

“When I opened it in the 70s, I was still a young man ... now nothing is left,” he said, leaning heavily on a walking stick and surveying the vast destruction.

“How my life has been spent in vain here!“

The war in Lebanon has been included in the framework deal to end the broader Middle East war.

But Lebanon’s army on Monday urged displaced residents to delay their return to southern border villages, citing the “risk of Israeli violations and attacks.”

Hezbollah issued a similar warning.

Yet residents who have cautiously returned to Nabatieh have expressed dismay at the huge damage Israel inflicted on the city’s neighborhoods and its famed market, where the roofing had collapsed, and shops were devastated.

An AFP photographer also saw destruction to homes and businesses in the city, which has served as a hub of economic, social, and services activity.

The city’s municipality said in a statement that it had asked residents not to return “at the present time under any circumstances,” citing the security situation.

The Lebanese army had set up a checkpoint at the entrance to the city, advising locals about the roads that they could take as intermittent artillery shelling rang out and smoke rose up.

The flow of residents to Nabatieh picked up later in the day, with people inspecting their homes and properties as heavy machinery worked to remove rubble and clear roads.

In one heavily damaged neighborhood, Rana Nasrallah surveyed her destroyed home, the rubble strewn with clothes, furniture, and potted plants.

The 45-year-old had fled with her family to the coastal city of Sidon during the war.

“We grew up in this neighborhood. We used to play here as children. And here’s where the older women used to sit and chat, the historic Nabatieh market before us ... the landmarks that they perhaps wanted to erase,” she said.

“As soon as the ceasefire was declared and before any official (Lebanese) announcement ... we got going and came here. We couldn’t wait any longer.

“We came to breathe in the scent of our land ... even if there are no homes to shelter us and there is no work, still it’s a relief for our souls.”

In the face of the huge damage in Nabatieh and other south Lebanon towns and villages, including where Israeli forces have carried out sweeping demolitions, Nasrallah still expressed hope of returning permanently.

“Despite the sorrow and grief at seeing the city destroyed ... we are filled with hope that we will rebuild,” she said.

“Not once did we feel defeated or that we would not triumph, or that we would not return to rebuild Nabatieh.”

Dutch court sentences Syrian to 26 years in prison for torture

June 15, 2026

THE HAGUE: A district court in The Hague on Monday sentenced to 26 years in prison a former pro-Assad militia member for committing crimes against humanity by torturing and raping prisoners more than a decade ago.

The judges said it was established that 58-year-old Rafik A., whose last name was withheld by the Dutch court, was an interrogator for the National Defense Forces in Salamiyah, Syria, in 2013 and 2014. The NDF was a militia group that fought on the side of the government of former President Bashar Assad, who was ousted in December 2024.

During his trial Rafik A. had repeatedly denied involvement in the crimes and accused witnesses against him of lying.

“The suspect was engaged in torture, rape or other sexual abuse of eight victims in this case, either by committing the acts himself or by ordering others to do so,” presiding judge Wim van Hattum said in a ruling summary.

The verdict is the first Dutch conviction for atrocities in Syria committed by pro-government forces. It is also the first time a Dutch court has convicted someone of sexual violence as a crime against humanity. Cases against Assad-era security officials have also been brought in other European countries including Germany.

Rafik A. was arrested in 2023 in the Netherlands, where he had lived for several years as an asylum seeker.

Under the concept of universal jurisdiction, Dutch law broadly allows cases to be brought against foreign nationals for crimes committed abroad if the perpetrators or some of the victims are present in the Netherlands.

Duhok mosque loudspeaker rules spark debate

2026-06-16

The decision by the Duhok Directorate of Endowments (Awqaf) to regulate loudspeaker volumes in mosques has sparked debate, with supporters calling it a necessary step to reduce noise and overlapping broadcasts, while critics argued it could affect the Islamic call to prayer.

Denying the claim, the Directorate said the measure does not target the adhan (Islamic prayer calling) and is intended only to regulate sound levels inside and outside mosques.

Abdul Razzaq Kofli, deputy director-general of the Directorate, told Shafaq News that the decision applies across all six districts of Duhok province and was introduced following requests and proposals from worshippers and residents living near mosques.

He noted that Duhok province has 1,106 mosques, clarifying that the directorate is working to improve their performance and organize the use of loudspeakers.

The issue is not about preventing or reducing the call to prayer, he argued, explaining that it is about addressing significant differences in volume levels between mosques. “Some operate at very low levels, while others use loudspeakers at excessively high volumes.”

According to Kofli, the proximity of some mosques to one another can also lead to overlapping calls to prayer and prayer recitations, affecting worshippers’ concentration and creating audio disturbances in certain neighborhoods. He vowed the directorate will continue implementing the measure, adding that, alongside criticism, the directorate has received messages of appreciation from worshippers and residents who said the changes improved audio quality and reduced noise disturbances.

Muslim World League launches Arabic language initiative for Qur’an memorizers in Southeast Asia

June 15, 2026

KUALA LUMPUR: The secretary-general of the Muslim World League, Sheikh Mohammed Al-Issa, inaugurated the Fourth Forum of the ASEAN Scholars Council in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, on Monday, which brought together senior Islamic scholars and muftis from across Southeast Asia.

As part of the council’s activities this year, Al-Issa launched a new Arabic-language program for huffaz (the name given to people who memorize the entire Qur’an) from member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, with the aim of enhancing their Arabic proficiency and supporting their understanding of Islamic texts.

The event also honored the second group of distinguished Qur’an memorizers from the region to receive ijazahs, formal certifications in Qur’anic recitation, through the league’s Global Technical Quran Recitation Platform.

The certifications were awarded through an authenticated chain of transmission that can be traced back to the Prophet Muhammad, which the league said reflects its efforts to promote Qur’anic education and preserve traditional methods of learning while also taking advantage of modern technological platforms.

Prominent participants at the forum included Malaysia’s deputy prime minister, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi; the country’s grand mufti, Ahmad Fauwaz Fadzil; and its religious affairs minister, Mohd Na’im Mokhtar.

The event featured discussions among leading religious scholars from ASEAN member states, and highlighted a number of initiatives designed to strengthen Islamic education and cooperation across the region.

The ASEAN Scholars Council serves as a platform for cooperation among religious leaders in Southeast Asia and supports initiatives focused on education, moderation and the strengthening of Islamic scholarship throughout the region.

Relations between France, Saudi Arabia have never been so close, says official

Zeina Zbibo

June 15, 2026

RIYADH: A high-ranking French official has told Arab News that relations between his country and Saudi Arabia have never been so close.

Olivier Cadic, senator for French citizens abroad, vice president of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Armed Forces, and president of the France–Gulf States Interparliamentary Friendship Group, made the comments on Sunday.

He was visiting the Kingdom at the head of a French parliamentary delegation that included senators Nathalie Delattre and Remy Pointereau. Following his meetings with Saudi officials, Cadic reflected on the Kingdom’s transformation, the state of Franco-Saudi relations and the prospects for cooperation between the two countries.

He said Saudi Arabia was among the fastest-transforming countries in the world. “This is my ninth visit to Saudi Arabia in 11 years. What strikes me on every trip is the speed of the country’s transformation,” he told Arab News en francais.

The senator especially highlighted the changes he had observed in the capital city, where development projects are multiplying under Vision 2030. According to Cadic, this modernization strategy “infuses an accelerated spirit of modernity” and reflects a clear ambition for economic diversification, innovation and openness to the world.

During his visit, he also emphasized the strength of the Franco-Saudi partnership, which he described as exceptional. “Relations between France and Saudi Arabia are excellent and have never been so close,” he said.

The senator said this was based on mutual trust and shared positions on several key regional issues. He also recalled the importance of solidarity between partners in times of difficulty.

“I wanted to stress that France does not forget the attacks Saudi Arabia has faced. In difficult times, partners must be able to rely on one another,” he said.

Paris and Riyadh notably share the backing of a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, concern over the prospect of Iran acquiring or using military nuclear weaponry, and a shared desire to see Lebanon regain full sovereignty and for Syria to return to stability.

“More broadly, France and Saudi Arabia defend multilateralism, respect for international law, and the territorial integrity of states,” said Cadic.

On the economic front, the senator believes cooperation prospects between France and Saudi Arabia are particularly promising. Sectors such as new technologies, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, tourism, culture and training are among the key areas.

“Saudi Arabia’s economic diversification is creating many opportunities for French companies, which have recognized expertise in these sectors,” he explained.

Mega-projects launched under Vision 2030 are opening new prospects in transport infrastructure, sustainable water management, decarbonized energy, healthcare and digital technologies.

Cadic also highlighted the emergence of new high-value-added areas of cooperation: “Cooperation between France and Saudi Arabia is now expanding into new sectors, including cultural and creative industries, artificial intelligence and even e-sports.”

He added that projects linked to the digital economy and youth perfectly illustrated the ability of both countries to build innovative and forward-looking partnerships together.

One of the most striking parts of his visit, said Cadic, was the mindset of Saudi officials and young people. He told Arab News: “I was particularly impressed by the confidence that drives Saudi officials and the country’s youth. There is a genuine desire to build the future and successfully achieve the ongoing transformation.”

The senator also praised Saudi hospitality and efforts to promote the Kingdom’s cultural heritage and improve its tourism appeal.

This cooperation is expected to continue growing. Cadic said bilateral exchanges had intensified in recent years, demonstrated by the increasing number of official visits. In particular, he highlighted a visit to France last year by a Saudi delegation.

“The role of parliamentary friendship groups is precisely to nurture this dialogue over time and encourage the emergence of new cooperation, whether economic, cultural, or institutional,” he said.

Asked about the current situation in the Gulf, Cadic said he believed Saudi Arabia plays a central role in a region facing multiple security and geopolitical challenges.

“The Gulf is evolving in a particularly complex regional environment,” he noted, referring to tensions linked to the Israel-Iran conflict.

In this context, he considers the Kingdom to be a stabilizing actor, favoring diplomatic solutions and initiatives that promote regional peace. Its economic, political, and diplomatic weight makes it “an indispensable actor in regional stability,” he said.

Finally, Cadic addressed the French community living and working in Saudi Arabia. He said: “I would like to express a message of confidence to our compatriots based in Saudi Arabia. They are fully contributing to the rapprochement between our two countries and to France’s influence abroad.”

The senator believes the opportunities offered by the Kingdom are considerable and that Franco-Saudi relations still hold exceptional potential for further development.

“More than ever, French citizens in the Kingdom are bridges between our two nations and valuable contributors to this future-oriented cooperation,” he concluded.

Muslim tech shop worker was threatened by topless man who pointed to Jesus tattoo on chest during tirade, court told

By Alan Erwin

June 15, 2026

A Muslim tech shop worker was allegedly threatened with a knife and a baseball bat at a customer’s h...

Christopher Parks, 43, also tried to set his dog on the victim while walking about topless and pointing at a tattoo of Jesus on his chest, it was claimed.

Parks, of Inverary Avenue, is also accused of subjecting the other man to a series of racially abusive text messages last week and threatening to burn down his business.

He appeared at Belfast Magistrates’ Court on charges of threats to kill, common assault, improper use of a communication network and threats to damage property.

Belfast Magistrates’ Court heard the victim attended Parks home on June 8 to help with second hand electronic goods purchased from the Gadget Hub store on the Holywood Road.

When he arrived to complete the set-up the defendant became angry at him for watching a video tutorial to assist in the process.

“The defendant brought his dog into the room and told it to attack the injured party,” a PSNI officer claimed.

“He also held a baseball bat and told him ‘I will kill you. I’ve been to prison for murder, I’m not afraid to do it again’.”

Parks then allegedly discarded the bat before returning with a large rusted knife and issuing similar threats.

According to police the front was locked and the man only allowed to leave after he got the equipment to work.

“He stated he was in fear throughout that he would be attacked because he was a Muslim,” the officer disclosed.

“(Parks) was walking around the property topless, pointing at a tattoo of Jesus on his chest and telling the injured party that Jesus would protect him, Parks, and not the injured party.”

Later in the week he allegedly sent the man multiple abusive messages, demanding a refund and suggesting his shop would be burnt down.

“The defendant said that as people were attacking Muslim-owned businesses in the area he should give him the money and threatened to take the matter into his own hands,” the officer added.

“He said he would be outside the shop every day waiting on him and would never leave him alone.”

Parks was arrested on Saturday when he went back to the store again on Saturday.

Defence counsel Michael Boyd described it as a serious case with “elements of the bizarre”.

He told the court it involved a dispute about the quality of goods his client could not get to work.

“The defendant makes the case that he was at his wits end, and he says being ignored by this individual,” Mr Boyd submitted.

“But there is no justification whatsoever for some of the abusive comments in the messages.”

Parks denies issuing threats or brandishing weapons while the injured party was in his home.

He was refused bail and remanded in custody until next month based on the risks of re-offending and harm to the public.

District Judge Steven Keown said: “This is extremely concerning behaviour alleged to have occurred over a prolonged period of time.”

Muharram to begin in Azerbaijan on June 16, Ashura to be observed on June 25

15 June 2026

The holy month of Muharram will begin in Azerbaijan on June 16, according to the Caucasus Muslims Board (CMB), AzerNEWS reports.

In a statement addressing Muslims across the country, the Council of Qazis of the Caucasus Muslims Board and its authorized representatives announced the start of Muharram and outlined guidelines for religious observances during the mourning period.

The statement noted that mourning ceremonies traditionally held over a 60-day period during the months of Muharram and Safar, particularly during Tasua and Ashura commemorations, should be conducted in accordance with Islamic teachings. Practices involving self-harm, bloodletting, striking the body with various instruments, or participating in chest-beating rituals while partially undressed were described as incompatible with the principles of the religion.

The Council of Qazis also reminded local religious representatives, including qazis and imams, to ensure that religious ceremonies are conducted in compliance with the provisions of Azerbaijan’s Law on Freedom of Religious Belief. Under the guidelines, religious events should take place within mosques, shrines, and their designated premises.

The statement further emphasized that Azerbaijani legislation does not permit the use of slogans that undermine national and spiritual values or state traditions during mourning ceremonies. The use of symbols deemed inconsistent with state emblems, as well as street processions and activities that disrupt public order, is also prohibited.

According to the Caucasus Muslims Board, Ashura, one of the most significant days of the Islamic calendar, will be observed in Azerbaijan on June 25, 2026.

Swindon Muslims 'want people to know we are part of this community'

15 June 2026

By Daniel Angelini

A Swindon community has committed to donating 1,000 hot meals to homeless people in the town.

As part of a growing effort to help the most vulnerable citizens in the area, local Muslims have joined an initiative which will support homeless shelters during the next 12 months.

This got off to a good start over the May bank holiday, when volunteers worked together to prepare and deliver 100 freshly-cooked hot meals to Booth House.

The campaign reflects a deeply held belief within the community that caring for neighbours, regardless of background or belief, is a shared responsibility, and hopes to make a meaningful and sustained difference to those experiencing homelessness across the whole town.

A spokesperson for the initiative told the Adver: “We want people in Swindon to know that we are part of this community, and we care deeply about everyone in it.

“No one should go hungry, and coming together on the bank holiday to cook and deliver those meals felt like exactly the right way to show that.”

The community is welcoming collaboration from other local groups and organisations who wish to get involved as the campaign grows throughout the year.

Mosque charity challenges trustees’ bans mid-inquiry

15 Jun 2026

A charity that runs a mosque in Hammersmith, west London, is challenging a decision to ban two of its trustees as part of an investigation.

The Charity Commission opened a statutory inquiry into the Al-Tawheed (TUCF) Charitable Trust in January 2024 after concerns were raised about an event held at its premises in 2020.

Organised by a third party, the event was a “religious remembrance programme” for major general Qasem Soleimani, a now-deceased senior figure in Iran’s military who was sanctioned by the UK government.

The commission said it heard “antisemitic chants”, which Civil Society understands were shouts of “death to Israel”, in a video recording of the event.

At the time, the charity said in a statement that it acknowledged “the gravity of the allegations raised” and that “the trustees who held office during the events under investigation are no longer affiliated with our organisation”.

Now, the regulator has confirmed that it has removed two TUCF trustees as part of its investigation, with the intention of disqualifying them both.

The charity has challenged its trustees’ bans but the pair remain suspended.

A spokesperson for the commission said: “On 23 July 2025 we suspended two trustees of the Al-Tawheed (TUCF) Charitable Trust and on the same day notified them of our intention to disqualify them both.

“They have challenged their disqualification.

“It is now for the tribunal to decide whether their appeal should be upheld. In the meantime, both remain suspended by order of the commission from acting as trustees.

“We also issued an order directing the remaining trustees to take actions to improve the governance and management of the charity, which they must comply with.

“We cannot comment further as this legal process and the inquiry into the charity are ongoing.”

A TUCF spokesperson told the Financial Times last week, for a piece that raised wider concerns about Iranian influence in the UK charity sector, that the charity has “no relationship with any state or government”.

“The trustees have been working diligently and constructively with the Charity Commission to address its concerns,” they told the newspaper.

TUCF has five trustees listed on the register of charities. It recorded an income of £19,200 in the year to September 2024.

UK to supply enriched uranium to Kiev

16 Jun, 2026

The UK will supply enriched uranium to Ukraine’s state nuclear energy company, Energoatom, under a £210 million ($280mn) deal aimed at supporting Kiev’s power grid, the British government has announced.

The arrangement, backed by UK Export Finance, will enable British-based Urenco to supply enriched uranium to Energoatom for the next two years, London said on Monday. The deal was agreed by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Vladimir Zelensky during their meeting at Downing Street last week.

According to the British government, the agreement is intended to “power Ukraine’s nuclear plants” and strengthen the country’s energy security.

Starmer said London would continue to back Kiev “for as long as it takes,” despite a string of corruption scandals involving Ukraine’s energy sector, including Energoatom itself, which operates three Soviet-built nuclear power plants and remains a major source of revenue.

Western-backed anti-corruption bodies in Ukraine have uncovered graft schemes at the state nuclear operator, including a major case linked to businessman Timur Mindich, a close associate of Zelensky dubbed his “wallet.” A separate graft case involving Energoatom-linked infrastructure was reported earlier this month.

The deal also comes amid repeated warnings from Moscow over nuclear safety in Ukraine. Russia has accused Kiev of carrying out multiple attacks on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest nuclear facility, which has been under Russian control since March 2022.

Earlier this month, a Ukrainian drone struck the machine hall of the plant’s sixth power unit. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed damage, while stopping short of assigning blame.

The UK’s enriched uranium plan may also draw renewed scrutiny to Kiev’s repeated hints about revisiting its non-nuclear status. Days before the escalation of the conflict in February 2022, Zelensky suggested that Ukraine could reconsider its non-proliferation obligations.

Earlier this year, Zelensky said that he would accept nuclear weapons from Britain or France “with pleasure,” while insisting that no such offer had been made. Moscow has accused London and Paris of considering ways to provide Ukraine with components or technologies that could allow Kiev to develop a nuclear weapon or a radioactive “dirty bomb,” allegations both Western governments have rejected.

Ukrainian media exposes drone plant at film studio hit by Russia

15 Jun, 2026

The Russian military has destroyed a warehouse at the Dovzhenko Film Studios in Kiev, with the national filmmaker and local media accidentally confirming that it housed a drone manufacturing plant.

The Russian Defense Ministry on Monday named the warehouse among the targets of a large-scale overnight strike on the Ukrainian capital. The building housed a “workshop for the production and tuning of long- and medium-range UAVs,” the ministry stated.

Ukrainian officials were quick to deny the military nature of the destroyed installation, with the studio claiming the warehouse was used to store “unique” props and costumes dating back to the Soviet era.

“The missile destroyed the entire building and ignited a fire. It wasn’t debris, but a direct hit. Judging by the scale of the destruction, you can see there was practically nothing left to save,” the studio’s director general, Andrey Donchik, told Ukrainian media.

Footage from the scene shared by the studio itself and Ukrainian media outlet NV.ua, however, told a different story, showing a distinctive stack of aircraft wings among the rubble. The wings appear to be consistent with those of Ukrainian FP-1/2 drones used for long-range strikes on Russian territory.

The discovery quickly went viral on social media, with the studio and the news outlet scrambling to delete the incriminating materials without providing any further statements on the matter.

Ukraine has a long history of using civilian installations, including assorted warehouses, public buildings, and agricultural and industrial facilities, for military purposes. Over the course of the conflict, Kiev has taken considerable steps to decentralize its weapons production chain, creating small-scale assembly sites that mainly produce FPV and fixed-wing long-range drones from components supplied from abroad.

When such manufacturing sites are discovered and destroyed by Moscow, Kiev routinely denies their nature and accuses Russia of targeting civilian sites. Moscow has consistently brushed off such allegations, maintaining that it only targets military and dual-use installations in response to indiscriminate “terrorist attacks” staged by Kiev.

CAIR-Texas and CAIR Action Texas Say ‘Hate Is Not a Winning Strategy’ as Voters Reject Anti-Muslim Rhetoric in Texas Mayoral Race

June 15, 2026

The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Texas), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, and CAIR Action Texas today said “hate is not a winning strategy” after a Texas mayoral candidate whose campaign was marked by anti-Muslim rhetoric was defeated in the runoff election for mayor of Frisco, Texas.

Reports indicate that candidate Rod Vilhauer, who had generated controversy over comments targeting the city’s Muslim community, lost the race to Mark Hill.

The New York Times reports: “The nonpartisan race was one of the earliest tests of whether attacks on Islam, increasingly prevalent among Republican politicians and primary candidates this year, would be effective with a broader set of voters.

Mr. Hill’s victory could dampen the enthusiasm among Republican candidates for such messages in general election contests, particularly in places like the suburbs of Dallas that are home to large numbers of Muslim and South Asian residents.”

In a joint statement, CAIR-Texas and CAIR Action Texas said:

“The defeat of a candidate who sought to divide voters through anti-Muslim rhetoric sends a clear message that hate and fear-mongering do not represent the values of most Texans or Americans. While anti-Muslim extremists have attempted to normalize bigotry and conspiracy theories about Islam and Muslim communities, Frisco voters demonstrated that the effort to scapegoat religious minorities is not a winning strategy. Hate lost, and the principles of inclusion, equal citizenship, and mutual respect prevailed.

“We congratulate all those community leaders, faith organizations, civic groups, and residents who rejected division and stood up for the rights and dignity of all members of their community. At a time when anti-Muslim rhetoric by public officials has reached alarming levels nationwide, this election result offers hope that Americans of all backgrounds can unite against prejudice and extremism.”

Last month, CAIR-Texas joined with a number of Dallas–Fort Worth Muslim organizations in calling for an end to the hateful rhetoric and fear-mongering by some Texas politicians.

Also last month, CAIR-Texas and Fort Bend County Commissioner Dexter L. McCoy held a joint public safety press conference to address the national and local rise in anti-Muslim hate incidents.

CAIR recently commended Democratic members of Congress who defended American Muslims and constitutional religious freedom during a House Judiciary subcommittee hearing on “Sharia law.” CAIR also condemned Republican members and witnesses for promoting anti-Muslim fearmongering and dangerous smear tactics amid rising anti-Muslim hate incidents nationwide.

The civil rights organization noted that its latest civil rights report documented 8,683 anti-Muslim bias complaints in 2025 – the highest number ever recorded by the organization since it began publishing civil rights reports in 1996.

The Center for the Study of Organized Hate issued a report showing an approximately 1,450 percent increase in anti-Muslim extremist rhetoric by public officials in the 15 months after February 2025, warning that many such statements satisfy criteria for speech likely to inspire violence.

After the deadly terror attack on the San Diego mosque, CAIR is also calling on Muslim community leaders to utilize its “Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety” bookletto help keep religious facilities safe. The advice in the booklet is applicable to all houses of worship.

CAIR Texas’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.   As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, CAIR Texas does not endorse or oppose candidates for office and makes no claims as to the favorability of one candidate being elected over another.

La misión de CAIR Texas es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.

CAIR Action is a 501(c)(4) advocacy organization dedicated to engaging, educating, and mobilizing Muslim voters, training emerging leaders, and advancing policy priorities that improve community well-being and representation.

Eight people dead after US Air Force B-52 bomber crashes in California

Max Matza

15 Jun, 2026

Eight people, including two Boeing employees, have been killed after a US Air Force B-52 bomber crashed immediately after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base in southern California.

The incident occurred at 11:20 local time (19:20 GMT) on Monday while the aircraft was on a routine test mission. The crash sent a huge plume of black smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.

"Today, Edwards Air Force Base experienced a terrible tragedy, and we lost eight great Americans," Col James Hayes said, describing them as a "mixed crew of military, government civilians and government contractors".

The base earlier said that initial indications are that the crash "was not survivable".

The crew's next of kin are being notified and they will be named 24 hours after that, Hayes said in an afternoon briefing.

The crash was "totally contained" within the Edwards Air Force Base on the runway, Hayes said, and the base has temporarily grounded operations.

The B-52 was supporting the base's radar modernisation programme, he said, and it crashed immediately after takeoff and burst into flames.

After reviewing initial footage, the incident was deemed "an unrecoverable crash and unsurvivable", Hayes said.

No cause has yet been determined and will not be until after a series of investigations, which could take up to 30 days. Further cause analysis investigations could take more than six months, Hayes said.

In a separate statement, Boeing confirmed that two of its employees were among those onboard and that the company is in contact with their families. The aerospace giant declined to comment further when contacted by the BBC.

In a post on X, California Governor Gavin Newsom called the crash "a tragic incident" and offered condolences to the victims' families and Edwards Air Force Base community.

The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress has been used by the US military since the 1950s. It is nicknamed "the Buff", which is partly short for "Big Ugly Fat".

Aerial footage showed a charred, smoking landscape where the crash occurred.

In an earlier update on X, the base said that "the airfield has been closed, and all inbound aircraft are being diverted".

"All non-commercial visitor passes have been suspended until further notice to allow the installation to focus entirely on emergency response operations."

The B-52 is a long-range strategic bomber that has been participating in bombing raids during the US and Israel's war in Iran.

Capable of flying at up to 50,000 feet - in comparison to commercial airliners, which fly at around 35,000 feet - the colossal bomber's 70,000lb (32,000kg) payload can include hundreds of conventional bombs and 32 nuclear cruise missiles.

The aircraft can refuel mid-flight, giving it a potentially unlimited strike range. This created a "nuclear umbrella" for the United States during the Cold War, back in the era of mutually assured destruction in the mid-20th Century.

The planes typically carry a crew of five - an aircraft commander, pilot, radar navigator, navigator and electronic warfare officer.

Edwards Base is located around 100 miles (160km) north of Los Angeles, in the Mojave Desert.

"Absolutely heartbreaking. God bless the 8 crew members on board," US Representative Vince Fong, whose California congressional district includes part of the base, wrote on X.

Congressman Jay Obernolte, whose district also includes part of the base, posted on Facebook that he and his wife "are praying for everyone involved in today's B-52 crash at Edwards Air Force Base, especially the crew, their families, and the first responders on scene".

Michigan Congresswoman Lisa McClain was also wrote about the crash, posting on X: "My prayers are with everyone involved in the B-52 crash at Edwards Air Force Base this afternoon."

She thanked emergency crews and added: "Our service members carry the weight of this nation's defense every single day. We are with them."

Bowen: Iran deal ends Trump's war that revealed limit of US dominance

16 Jun, 2026

Jeremy Bowen

The war has been President Donald Trump's worst foreign policy blunder – so far.

It makes it harder for the United States to deter its enemies.

It has damaged its alliances with the oil-producing Arab monarchies of the Gulf, whose business model as islands of stability in the turbulence of the Middle East will take years to repair.

Privately, their officials already talk about diversifying their allegiances, and about the necessity of finding ways to live alongside Iran, its neighbour across the water. China will have been watching closely as the United States burned through hard-to-replace stocks of weapons and came up against the limits of its power.

The agreement, assuming no more last-minute hitches, ends a war that was based on America and Israel's misreading of the strength of their enemy in Tehran. That will create a huge sigh of relief among all those whose lives have been turned upside down by the war, starting with civilians in the firing line.

The agreement re-opens the Strait of Hormuz, Trump says, taking the pressure off the global economy and the real lives of hundreds of millions of hard-pressed people around the world.

Thousands of people in the Middle East have been killed. Homes and businesses have been destroyed. The impact on fertiliser production that depended on supplies shipped through the strait could mean people in poor countries going hungry later in the year, with Africa south of the Sahara particularly at risk.

The agreement is not a peace deal. The full text, which negotiators have said has 14 points on two pages, has not been published yet. But as well as reopening the strait, the memorandum of understanding extends the ceasefire and lifts the US Navy's blockade of Iranian ports.

It defers the thorniest issues to future negotiations. That agenda will include the future of Iran's nuclear programme and the level of sanctions relief it will get in return for concessions.

A line has, at last, been drawn under the war that the US and Israel started on 28 February.

Now turn the clock back to 27 February, as American and Israeli forces were preparing to strike, arming their aircraft, briefing their crews and programming targets for their missiles.

In Geneva, Iran and the US were involved in what the world had been told were essential talks aimed at controlling Iran's nuclear plans. Multiple sources have told me and others that Iranian negotiators believed they were in a serious process and had put concessions as well as demands on the table.

At the entrance to the Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz was open, allowing the passage of around 20% of the world's requirements of oil and natural gas, as well as byproducts of the petro-chemical industry that have become vital components of modern life, including agricultural fertilisers and semi-conductors.

The memorandum of understanding clears the way for the nuclear negotiators to reconvene and for ships to transit the strait. That is exactly where they were 24 hours before the US and Israel went to war.

In the first of a series of devastating surprise attacks, Israel killed the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his closest advisers. Around the same time, an American strike flattened a school in Minab in southern Iran, multiple investigations have shown. More than 150 civilians were killed, including at least 120 school children, mostly girls under the age of 12.

Both Trump and Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made video appearances to announce the start of a war that they believed would be short, sharp and victorious. It was a stunning misjudgement.

Their speeches predicted the fall of the regime in Tehran. Instead, survival has strengthened the regime. Its worst nightmare was a full-scale attempt at regime change by the United States and Israel. It happened and failed. The hard men in Tehran who survived have emerged emboldened.

Khamanei and his advisers were replaced rapidly, by his son Mojtaba as supreme leader and by a younger generation of commanders, dominated by senior leaders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. They are every bit as ideological as the old guard, but less cautious, ready to take risks in what they considered, correctly, to be a fight for the survival of the Islamic regime in Iran.

They pushed to the limit a well-planned strategy of closing the Strait of Hormuz and attacking Iran's Arab neighbours as well as US forces and bases, and Israel itself. The bellicose rhetoric of the US Defence Secretary Peter Hegseth claiming that American power had crippled Iran's armed forces turned out to be exaggerated and untrue.

Israel was America's full partner in the war. But it was excluded from the negotiation on the memorandum of understanding and is viewing the deal with dismay.

Netanyahu said on 28 February that he had waited all his political life for the chance to destroy the Islamic Republic, which he views as Israel's most dangerous enemy. Now he is under attack from political opponents for endangering Israel's security.

Netanyahu will be dealing with the recriminations and consequences until the rapidly approaching general election, due before the end of October.

A potential stumbling block is Israel's stated determination to continue to occupy a broad swathe of land in the south of Lebanon, from which it has expelled civilians and where it has destroyed thousands of buildings. Israel's defence minister said it would continue its occupation of land in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza "indefinitely".

Netanyahu is under pressure from hardliners in his cabinet and political opponents to carry out more offensive action in Lebanon. Some are calling for the annexation of the country's south. He will have to weigh up whether he can afford to risk doing more damage to Israel's alliance with the US by defying Trump, who has been venting his frustration with Netanyahu in a series of interviews in the US.

An Israeli air strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut on Sunday was a clear attempt to derail the negotiations at a critical moment. Instead it seems to have accelerated them, as the time for talking seemed to be running out.

There is time now for a pause for breath. It is way too soon to conclude that the memorandum of understanding can be extended into a grand bargain between the US and Iran. A deal like that could transform the Middle East. But ideology and a total lack of trust make it a distant pipe dream.

This has been a sorry affair for all concerned. The Iranian people, to whom Trump promised a vision of freedom on 28 February, are still ruled by a ruthless regime that in January killed thousands of its fellow citizens for protesting in the streets.

America retains enormous economic and military power. But Trump's impulsive decision to go to war against Iran is looking like the action of a superpower that is struggling to retain its dominance in a world of change.

Outgoing Texas GOP chair tells Muslim delegates to 'leave our caucus'

June 15, 2026

HOUSTON — To some extent, Mohamed Hussein knew he was preparing to enter the lion’s den.

But he made the decision to attend the Republican Party of Texas Convention to confirm for himself that he had a place in the GOP, even as members of the party have railed for months about the urgency of ending Sharia Law and the so-called “Islamification” of Texas.

What he found was a party that didn’t want him. He arrived with hope, but left in tears after being told explicitly that he should leave the country.

Hussein was among four Muslims who arrived at the convention in earnest — not as protesters, but as delegates or attendees — to participate in the annual meeting of the state’s most hard-lined Republicans as they vote on the party’s priorities and hear from GOP leaders. Two prevailing themes from the Houston gathering were party unity and combatting Sharia Law, a movement that veered into outright Islamophobia by members of the convention.

“When they say Sharia-free, that means Muslim-free, no practices of Islam,” Hussein said in an interview with The Texas Tribune. “No one is calling for the state to implement Sharia laws.”

Hussein said he was in disbelief that he was told to convert or leave — for the first time in his life — at a Republican convention with the tagline, “Unity drives victory.”

Language for "Don't Sharia Our Texas" legislative priority is projected on screen at the 2026 Republican Party of Texas convention on Saturday, June 13, 2026.That slogan, touted by the governor on press releases, placards, lanyards and even the elephant he procured to march through the convention haul, became a rallying cry for the state’s leaders and party nominees heading into November. If fractured, they warned, the party could lose the state to Democrats and their U.S. Senate nominee, Austin state Rep. James Talarico.

But in spite of that warning, members were willing to lose the support of Muslim conservatives.

On Saturday, outgoing GOP chair Abraham George, addressed two Muslim delegates from the stage, who members tried to expel from the convention because of their ties to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a group the GOP and Gov. Greg Abbott have deemed a terrorist threat.

“I would strongly advise you to leave our caucus,” George said. “There is a Democrat convention happening in a couple weeks. Join them.”

“There’s no place in America for you”

On Saturday, the last day of the convention, Hussein attended a panel from the Judeo-Christian Caucus moderated by Dr. Rick Scarborough, a former Southern Baptist pastor and the president of Recover America, an organization to engage ministers and pastors in politics.

Speakers told the audience that immigrants who don’t believe in Judeo-Christian values will erode those values and create problems for America. Scarborough accused Muslims of lying to win political power.

“You’re going to find Muslims that aren’t being antagonistic or mean, at least not publicly. But I'll guarantee, if they get power, they’ll cut your head off as believers of Christ,” he said.

Rick Scarborough delivers the morning invocation at the start of the second general session at Republican Party of Texas convention on Friday.State Sen. Bob Hall, an Edgewood Republican, also repeated the accusation that Muslims are “required by Sharia to lie” in order to “stay below the radar of being aggressive.”

Hussein was appalled by what he was hearing. From the back of the room, he objected, declaring that attendees have heard lies about Sharia throughout the convention. He was practicing Sharia at that very moment, he said.

“When they tell you that we’re compelled to lie, they are putting your Texan neighbors in an impossible position where nothing that we can say or do can absolve us from the crimes that they are accusing us of,” Hussein told the crowd. “That is not just, the Bible commands you to be just, and that is not American.”

Sharia are the lessons of the Prophet Muhammad, interpreted as the framework, or laws, for how Muslims should live their life which call for fasting, daily prayer, modest dressing and charity.

Following the panel, the two shared contact information. Shortly thereafter, Scarborough approached Hussein.

“What do you want me to do, leave?” Hussein asked Scarborough.

“Yes,” replied the minister.

Hussein, sobbing, turned from Scarborough, retreating to some chairs to cry alone. Scarborough followed and sat down next to him. The pastor placed an arm on the back of Hussein’s seat, leaning in to console him.

Scarborough, in an interview with The Texas Tribune, clarified that he thought Hussein should leave the country: “If you’re going to embrace the values and the teachings that you’re advocating for, there’s no place in America for you. That’s not assimilation. That’s taking over.”

A CAIR chapter founder

Hussein’s family moved to Houston from Egypt in 1992. He loved U.S. history in high school, and regards the Bill of Rights, which provides for freedom of religion, as a “beautiful document.”

These days, he is a father and works as a manager at a health care company.

Hussein, a religious man who prays multiple times a day, called himself a “conservative-leaning person” on economics, social and religious values, and he believes that religion has a role to play in social and public life.

Mohamed Hussein's father, delegate Tarek Hussein, outside the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston during the Texas State Republican Convention on Saturday, June 13, 2026.

He attended the convention with his father, Tarek Hussein, who founded CAIR Texas-Houston, the local branch of the Muslim civil rights group, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, in the wake of 9/11. Tarek Hussein attended as a registered delegate.

In November, Abbott designated CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist organizations with the goals of imposing Sharia law and supporting terrorism worldwide. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis followed in December. The Trump administration began naming foreign branches of the Muslim Brotherhood — but not CAIR — as terrorist organizations days after Abbott. The federal government expanded the list this year.

CAIR has denied wrongdoing or terroristic activity. The group says they follow all laws, and exist solely to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims. They have said they’re being targeted for opposing Israel in the war in Gaza.

“CAIR is a radical organization connected to terrorists who killed Americans and has been condemned by both Republicans and Democrats,” Texas GOP Chair D’rinda Randall said in a statement to the Tribune, just days after her election to the post. “Republicans are fully united and focused on victory in November.”

The elder Hussein said he aligns with the GOP on fiscal conservatism, and opposing abortion and Obamacare. A staunch social conservative, he opposes pornography and prostitution, and even the alcohol industry.

He became politically active following the 2001 terrorist attacks, during a heightened period of Islamophobia. The next year, he founded the local branch of CAIR-Texas with the goal of educating fellow Muslims in the American political system. By giving them hope in America, he said he hoped to drive people away from extremism, fundamentalism and terrorism. Those, he said, are borne out of frustration and hopelessness due to discrimination.

In a social media post on Friday, Frank Gaffney, a defense policy analyst and Defense Department official under President Ronald Reagan, referred to some of Hussein’s old writings as a paper on how to “infiltrate” political parties.

“When I educate my community about how to get active in the political party, now I’m being accused as [an] infiltrator,” Hussein told the Tribune.

Efforts to expel

Samar Halabi stood out as the only woman at the convention wearing a hijab.

“Do not sit down with terrorist organizations,” a passerby at the convention told a woman sitting next Halabi. “You know they’re CAIR, right?”

“I care about everybody,” Halabi responded, trying to make light of the moment.

Shortly later, another attendee approached Halabi and told her to leave the country.

Delegate Amjad Muhtaseb at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston during the 2026 Texas State Republican Convention on June 13, 2026.Samar Halabi's husband Amjad Muhtaseb at the convention on Saturday.

She wept into her husband’s chest.

Halabi, a teacher, declined to say how she would vote in November, but said that she is a Republican and always votes.

Halabi and her husband, Amjad Muhtaseb, were both registered as delegates for the convention.

Muhtaseb, an engineer and business owner, said Muslims are conservative by nature.

“We believe in Adam and Eve,” he said. “We don’t believe in this, multiple gender. We don’t drink. We don’t gamble. We are against pornography.”

They hope to bring more Muslims into the Republican Party.

In the days before the convention, Muhtaseb, along with Tarek Hussein, who founded the Houston CAIR branch, were gaining attention as other delegates began realizing they had connections to CAIR.

Muhtaseb spoke at a CAIR news conference about Abbott’s CAIR designation in his capacity as executive director of Muslim American Society-Houston. Muhtaseb said that was his only affiliation with the organization. However, Bonnie Wallace, chair of the convention’s Credentials Committee, incorrectly claimed Muhtaseb served on the board of CAIR-Texas.

Throughout the week, members of the convention attempted to remove them as delegates.

Ultimately, the party concluded that even the full convention did not have the power to boot them. However, the convention on Friday updated its rules so that next time it meets in 2028, the Credentials Committee could vote to remove delegates with ties to a terrorist organization.

Delegates and attendees at the 2026 Texas State Republican Convention listen to a panel, “Don’t Sharia My Texas” at the 2026 Texas State Republican Convention on Friday.

“While, philosophically, we can agree that CAIR is a terrorist organization and we would not promote them or materially help them, we’re moving the goalpost,” said Gaylyn Devine, an SREC member representing their area in Senate District 11, who defended their place at the gathering. “They followed the rules. They voted in the Republican primary. One of them has been, like, a 40-year Republican.”

Tarek Hussein said they have the right to practice Islam as long as nothing contradicts the Constitution.

“It’s well known that there is [an] American system, American law, and as Allah-abiding citizens, we all follow that law,” Tarek Hussein said. “How come you try to create a boogeyman called Sharia law?”

Growing the party

State Rep. Brent Money, a Greenville Republican who founded the Sharia-Free Texas Caucus, told the audience at Scarborough’s panel on Judeo-Christian values that there should be religious tests for people who run for office and that the country should be run by Christians. After his speech, Hussein asked whether Money was saying only Christians should be elected.

“I’m not saying that,” said Money, wearing a red “Defend Texas, Defeat Sharia” hat. He cited the first U.S. Supreme Court justice, John Jay, who wrote in 1816 that, as members of a Christian nation, Americans should elect Christians to office.

“We’ve proven over 250 years that we’re best ruled when we’re ruled by Christian men who serve a God that’s bigger than them and that seek the welfare of everyone that’s here,” Money said.

Houston state Rep. Mano DeAyala, the former chair of the Hispanic Republicans of Texas, questioned the wisdom of alienating non-Christians who want to join the party. He acknowledged the “Christian warrior’s” anger, disappointment and frustration with politics, but said the way forward was to “be Christians,” “be the good spirit” and to “love each other like ourselves.”

“What I’m about to say may be a little sacrilegious, but working with the Hispanic Republicans of Texas, there was a point here,” DeAyala said. “We’re trying to grow the party. We are trying to bring more people in this tent.”

Another convention delegate, Kevin Jennings of San Antonio, who was attending his first convention in several years, said while he agreed about the dangers of Sharia, he was concerned that Republicans were becoming consumed by the topic.

“I think that we’re getting focused off of where the truth should be, and we’re becoming lured around with Sharia focus, and I think that’s a risk that is not well spoken of,” Jennings said. We need to have overwhelmingly speak about Christ, speak about God, and that’s where the focus should be.”

Convention reflection

When it comes time to vote in the midterms, Tarek Hussein plans to support his party where he feels it’s deserved.

“I will vote Republican for the good Republican candidate,” he said.

Mohamed Hussein said the convention left him asking questions.

“How can I possibly get behind a party that tells me to leave, that says convert or leave?” he asked. “How do they think that is going to be some kind of winning strategy?”

The Abbott campaign declined to comment on Hussein’s incident. It was also silent on George’s direction for the delegates to join the Democrats.

He also is worried the anti-Islamic rhetoric could lead to more violence against Muslims. Last month, two gunmen, 17 and 18, killed three men when they opened fire at a San Diego mosque. San Diego Police, who are being aided by the FBI, are investigating it as a hate crime.

Asked whether he would vote for Talarico, a Presbyterian theologian who frequently discusses his Christian faith on the campaign trail, Hussein said he would vote for the candidate that champions religious liberty and economic prosperity.

“I will vote along those principles, but what I saw at the convention is not conservatism, so I’m going to assess in November and vote along with my values,” he said. “Absolutely, I will be voting for Republicans who denounce this extremism.”

In an interview Sunday, Scarborough said he had some regrets about his interaction with Mohamed Hussein, even though he thought he only attended his panel because he viewed the pastor as an enemy of CAIR.

“I’m not an enemy that fights like they fight,” Scarborough said. “I’m gonna fight on my knees, and I will fight in an effort to win Mohamed to Christ.”

When Hussein broke down crying, Scarborough said he realized he had pushed Hussein too hard. After insisting that Hussein should give up Sharia or leave the country, “the pastoral side of me reached out to him in genuine care,” he said, and he offered to pray with Hussein.

Scarborough said he has asked God and Hussein for forgiveness for not setting a good example of Judeo-Christian morality. He prayed that Mohamed would convert to Christianity.

“I'm trying to process how somebody can say this and then try to pray for me,” Hussein said.

But he said he forgave Scarborough.

Rattled by the experience, Mohamed Hussein isn’t sure what it means for his politics going forward.

“Many, many hear these things, the messaging, and think that they're dog whistles,” Hussein said. “I was hopeful that I’d come here and get a clarification. What we got was kind of a confirmation.”

Nigel Farage promises to destroy ‘anti-white’ government

June 16, 2026

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has taken to Substack to accuse the British government of infecting the UK with “deep anti-white racism.” He also published damning racism and crime statistics in an essay, much of which would have been previously unspeakable.

Farage announced his migration to the platform on Saturday, saying that the move to Substack would allow him to speak directly to the British public without “the mainstream media constantly distort[ing] what I say.” One day later, Farage used this new platform to unleash a 7,000-word tirade against the British state, which, he argued, has become “a two tier state against white people.”

What did Farage say?

Farage took aim at decades of British policy that he says have unfairly benefited minorities and discriminated against white Britons. He highlighted Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) policies in healthcare, education, policing, and the military that he insists have been implemented to disadvantage white patients, students, and applicants, and promised to repeal the 2010 Equality Act which, in his words, ensures that “anti-Whiteness is institutionalised into every aspect of public life.”

In healthcare, the NHS prioritizes “ethnic minority communities” and “vulnerable migrants” for accelerated diagnosis and treatment, despite white Britons having the highest mortality rate of all of the UK’s ethnic groups. In education, the poorest white Britons have the lowest outcomes of any demographic, yet are lectured about their “white privilege” and their “responsibility” to reduce racism, and sidelined when applying for university in favor of black students with lower exam scores, Farage said. In policing, he claimed, agencies across the country have adopted “race action plans” and done away with stop-and-frisk policies that seemingly target black men  – even though at 13% of London’s population, this demographic is responsible for 61% of knife murder in the British capital.

How Henry Nowak changed the conversation

None of these arguments are new, and the right has leveled accusations of ‘two-tier’ policing at Starmer’s government since the 2024 Southport riots – when Starmer cleared prisons to make way for hundreds of people arrested for social media posts supporting the rioters. However, Henry Nowak’s death made these accusations impossible to ignore.

Released earlier this month, bodycam footage showed officers handcuffing Nowak after he had been stabbed with a ceremonial dagger by a Sikh man. The officers refused to believe that Nowak had been injured, allowing him to bleed out in their custody while they listened to his attacker’s false claim that he had suffered a “racist” attack.

The Nowak case triggered violent protests in his native Southampton, and condemnation from the US government, with Vice President J.D. Vance blaming his death on Britain’s “politics of self-hatred and the mass invasion of migrants.” Three weeks later, an attempted beheading in Belfast by a Sudanese migrant reinforced Vance’s claim.

“Make no mistake: if there is no urgent action taken to remove discriminatory and dangerous anti-White policies, we will see another Belfast,” Farage wrote. “Thanks to the mass migration policies of Conservative and Labour governments, White Brits will become a minority in this country before the end of the century. Without a voice to speak up for them, the future will be manifestly unjust.”

Is Farage warning of “rivers of blood”?

Farage’s warning – that anti-white violence will increase as the white share of the population decreases – has been made before. In his 1968 ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech, Conservative MP Enoch Powell predicted that mass immigration would force natives out of jobs and housing, that white Britons would be “made strangers in their own country,” and that as he looked to the future, he, “like the Roman,” seemed “to see ‘the River Tiber foaming with much blood’.”

Whereas Powell warned of bloodshed in the future, Farage has argued that it is happening right now. Whites are being displaced in London, Farage claimed, providing statistics from where the district of Barking, which has been transformed from a 91% white community in 1991, to less than 31% today, and Westminster, which has gone from 73% white to 28% in the same time frame. In Westminster, some 43% of social housing is occupied by people born outside the UK and Ireland.

Black men and mental health in the UK

Combined with DEI policies at every level of the British state, this displacement has “lethal” consequences, Farage warned. In the healthcare system, black men are 3.5 times more likely to be sectioned under the Mental Health Act than their white counterparts, yet are more than ten times more likely to screen positive for psychotic disorders. With healthcare staff under pressure to reduce the former disparity, dangerous mental patients are being released. Among them is Valdo Calocane, a paranoid schizophrenic who stabbed three people to death and rammed a van into a crowd in Nottingham in 2023.

Meanwhile, Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) hires two times the number of foreign-trained and ethnic minority doctors, despite these doctors being “significantly more likely to be hauled in front of fitness to practise hearings.”

Farage’s moment

A long-time proponent of the kind of “color-blind meritocracy” advocated by American Republicans, Farage previously stopped short of portraying immigration as an existential threat to “white” Britain. Questioned by reporters in 2014, he would only admit that “the basic principle” of Powell’s argument was correct. However, his rhetoric on “anti-white racism” has hardened in recent months, and his Substack essay explicitly promises a brighter future for whites.

“We’re long past empty platitudes about change: only Reform has the will and the ability to ensure that no young White person ever has to grow up feeling ashamed of who they are again,” he wrote.

Is Farage riding a political wave and will he survive?

This new hardline stance seems partly opportunistic. Farage’s Reform UK capitalized on widespread dissatisfaction with Starmer’s migration policies to pick up more than 1,400 seats in local elections in England last month, as Starmer’s Labour Party lost the same amount. While these results seemed to vindicate Farage’s claim that Reform, and not the Conservative Party, is “now the main opposition party to this government,” the Belfast stabbing shone an unwelcome light on Reform’s immigration policies.

In the days after the attempted beheading, it emerged that the Sudanese attacker had his asylum application to the UK fast-tracked by a Conservative government in which Suella Braverman was home secretary and Robert Jenrick was minister for immigration. Braverman and Jenrick are now members of Reform, and although both have claimed that they split with the Tories on immigration, Farage has faced a new challenge on the right from Restore Britain’s Rupert Lowe, who has argued that Reform represents “change, but only the kind the establishment will allow.”

Whereas Farage has proposed kicking migrants out of social housing, Lowe has promised mass deportations. Farage has promised to hold black and white criminals equally accountable; Lowe has advocated for the reintroduction of the death penalty for migrant murderers. Against this kind of challenge, Farage’s essay can be seen as an attempt to reassert Reform as the voice of the British right.

Amid public outrage over the stabbing of Nowak and the brutal attack in Belfast, and with Starmer’s approval rating sitting at a miserable 16% in the latest Ipsos poll, Farage is likely betting that Reform can replicate its local wins in next year’s general election. As it stands, his message is resonating: according to a polling aggregate compiled by Politico, Reform is the UK’s most popular party, polling at 26%, with Labour and the Conservatives both trailing at 18%.

The Mamdani Effect? Arsenal, New York Knicks title wins create a new sporting superstition

Jun 15, 2026

Bengal has two poets whose vintage is considered above all others: Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam. Now, with full awareness of the absurdity involved, one may have to add a third name to the footnotes: MD Ahnaf Hossain.

Hossain, a Bangladeshi-origin New Yorker, became a social media sensation after his chant: “My mayor’s Muslim, my bagel’s Jewish, my Christian Dior, Knicks in four.” Now that’s no Gitanjali or Bidrohi, but it certainly united New Yorkers and, by extension, all members of the global order who feel they already live in New York because they have memorised every Friends and How I Met Your Mother episode.

Except it didn’t quite become Knicks in four, with superstitious sports fans blaming Donald Trump’s attendance at Madison Square Garden for Game 3, so the chant had to be updated: “My mayor’s still Muslim, my bagel’s still Jewish. The Pope is on our side, Knicks in five.”Now, while that might seem like poetic licence, the first American pope was seen giving a thumbs up when a fan screamed: “Pope Leo, go Knicks.” The pope, who shares an alma mater with three members of the current Knicks line-up, also signed a jersey for Knicks superfan Spike Lee which had “Pope Leo” written on the back, which led some to wonder if the Knicks had a divine assist, more so since Game 4 of the Finals featured a miraculous 29-point comeback.

But now talk has turned to another sort of sporting superstition: the Mamdani Effect. While the Mamdani Effect might sound like a boost for progressive causes since the election of New York’s first Muslim mayor, it’s actually what The Athletic called a Zohran Mamdani sports summer, after two of his teams, Arsenal and Knicks, ended historic trophy droughts.

Arsenal had last won the league in 2004, the Knicks had last won the NBA in 1973, and even this joke correlation was too much for Fox News, which wrote: “You would think, then, that credit for these teams' accomplishments would go to the players, coaches, front and office staff. But that would imply a level of awareness and rationality that many within left-wing sports media organizations simply do not possess.”

While one can see why Fox would be miffed, particularly since the only game the Knicks lost was when Donald Trump was in attendance, and it’s the octogenarian’s greatest chagrin that the city he grew up in never accepted him, the Mamdani Effect has become a buzzword for sports fans. In strict, non-scientific terms, it is the belief that a socialist mayor of New York, by merely supporting a team, can reverse decades of sporting misery. This is obviously nonsense, which is precisely why sports fans will believe it.

The young mayor has certainly leaned into it, turning up for Eid wearing a full Arsenal-themed kurta and telling people who came to him chanting that he was Muslim that “it was true”.

Now sports fans have always believed in some bizarre superstitions over the years, including yours truly.

Cricket fans are known to become completely catatonic when Sachin Tendulkar or Virat Kohli are batting, risking bladder infection rather than running to the toilet. In the World Cup, the Democratic Republic of Congo has taken along a superfan who they believe has the superpower of stopping goals through his gesture of standing motionless like a human statue for 90 minutes with his arm raised as a tribute to Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba.

Meanwhile, some believe Italy’s inability to reach the World Cup yet again is a sign of the “Sarajevo Curse”, a reference to a rather dark moment in the nation’s history where Italian tourists allegedly signed up for “sniper safaris” to shoot innocent people during the war in the 1990s. Incidentally, in 2026, Italy lost on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

There’s also the Nike World Cup curse, where a popular ad featuring the top stars of the time saw many of them flop. Didier Drogba broke his arm, Wayne Rooney’s England flopped, Ronaldinho didn’t even make the tournament and Fabio Cannavaro’s defending world champions Italy were knocked out in the group stage.

Across the Atlantic, the Madden curse became America’s great video-game theology: put an NFL star on the cover and wait for his season to go kaput.

But all of this brings us back to the Mamdani summer, and it will really be the icing on the cake if his team ends up winning. No, not the USA, whom he has going out in the quarter-finals to England. He has backed Morocco to win the World Cup by beating France in the final. If that actually does happen, and Africa gets its first World Cup winner, then even the most scientific minds will find it hard to argue against the Mamdani Effect.

Trump, Vance and Ghalibaf digitally sign US-Iran peace memorandum; formal ceremony in Switzerland on June 19

Jun 15, 2026

The United States and Iran have digitally signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending months of conflict between the two countries, a senior US official said on Monday. The agreement was signed electronically by US President Donald Trump, vice president JD Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, with a formal signing ceremony scheduled to take place in Switzerland on Friday.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that vice president JD Vance would attend the formal signing ceremony for a newly agreed memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran in Switzerland later this week, adding that the text of the agreement would be made public shortly after the event.

Speaking about the upcoming ceremony, Trump hinted that while his attendance is not confirmed yet, US vice president JD Vance would be present in Switzerland on Friday.

Trump further said the contents of the agreement would be released after the formal signing ceremony.

The memorandum lays out a framework for a 60-day halt in fighting, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the US blockade on Iran, according to the official.

Vance, in an interview with ABC News, confirmed the memorandum's digital signing and that leaders would gather in Switzerland later this week for a formal signing ceremony.

Iran signals further negotiations after signing

Despite the breakthrough, Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that the agreement would mark the beginning rather than the end of negotiations between the two sides. Speaking after a meeting with members of the Iranian Parliament’s Economic Commission, Araghchi said further talks were expected after the Swiss ceremony and stressed that Tehran remained cautious because of past experiences.

“We plan the process of negotiations and implementation of the agreement based on distrust, breach of commitments, and past experiences,” he said. “We try to create economic breakthroughs for the country as much as we can through the agreement,” the diplomat added.

According to the senior US official, technical discussions on carrying out the terms of the memorandum will begin later this week, while further details are likely to be made public within the next 24 to 48 hours.

The official said any relief involving frozen Iranian funds and sanctions would depend on Tehran complying with the terms of the understanding. Broader negotiations between the two sides are also expected to continue beyond the initial 60-day period outlined in the agreement.

US military posture to remain unchanged for now

While the memorandum is designed to reduce tensions, Washington does not plan to immediately alter its military posture in the region. The senior US official said the United States intends to maintain its current force levels during the next stage of talks, with any reduction in military deployments to be considered only after a final agreement is reached.

Vance also told Fox News that the memorandum contains an assurance that Iran will never produce, procure or buy a nuclear weapon. However, negotiations concerning Tehran's nuclear programme are expected to continue separately from the current arrangement.

Somaliland opens embassy in Jerusalem

June 15, 2026

JERUSALEM: Somaliland opened its embassy in Jerusalem on Monday, Israel’s foreign ministry announced, months after Israel became the first country to recognize the breakaway African state’s independence.

“Honoured to host my dear friend President @Abdirahmanirro at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during his historic State Visit to open Somaliland’s embassy in Jerusalem,” Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar posted on X, during the first-ever state visit of President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi.

“I’m proud of the privilege I had to write the first pages in the story of the Israel-Somaliland relationship,” Saar added.

Somaliland is the eighth country to open its embassy in Jerusalem, following the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Kosovo, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and Fiji.

Most foreign diplomatic missions to Israel are located in Tel Aviv, as the status of Jerusalem is one of the thorniest issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In December, Israel became the first country to recognize the independence of Somaliland since it declared its autonomy from Somalia in 1991 following a civil war.

Kogi Forests Won’t Shelter Bandits, Terrorists – Governor Ododo Declares

June 15, 2026

By Richard Ogunsile

The Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has vowed that terrorists, bandits and other violent criminals will have no safe haven in the state.

Ododo said his administration would deploy all lawful resources to secure residents, visitors and communities across the state.

Naija News reports that the governor stated this on Sunday during a visit to the training camp of newly recruited Forest Guard trainees in Lokoja, the state capital.

“We are determined to rid Kogi of criminal elements and we will deploy all lawful resources necessary to guarantee the safety of residents and visitors,” Ododo said.

Ododo said the state government was determined to reclaim forests and other vulnerable areas from criminals using them as hideouts.

He said the vast and largely unguarded forest areas in some parts of Kogi had become a major security concern because they provided cover for criminal groups.

According to him, the forests had enabled attacks on innocent citizens and must no longer be allowed to serve as safe zones for terrorists, bandits and other violent elements.

“The vast and largely unguarded forest areas in some parts of the state have become major security challenge, providing hideouts for criminal groups and enabling attacks on innocent citizens,” he said.

The governor said the recruitment and training of forest guards formed a major part of the state’s security strategy.

He explained that the initiative was designed to strengthen surveillance, block criminals from using forests as hideouts and improve the ability of security agencies to respond to threats.

“The recruitment and training of Forest Guards form a key component of the state’s security strategy aimed at strengthening surveillance, denying criminals access to safe havens and improving the capacity of security agencies to respond effectively to threats,” he added.

Ododo urged the trainees to approach their assignment with discipline, patriotism and a strong commitment to service.

He said the responsibility given to them was sensitive because it involved the protection of lives, property and communities.

The governor said the Forest Guard Programme was approved by President Bola Tinubu and was being implemented through the Office of the National Security Adviser in collaboration with the Department of State Services and other security institutions.

He commended Tinubu for his commitment to strengthening national security and supporting states with new measures to tackle emerging security challenges.

Ododo also praised the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, for his support and leadership in advancing security reforms across the country.

The governor further lauded the Director-General of the DSS, Adeola Ajayi, for supporting security operations in Kogi State.

He noted that the DSS was overseeing the profiling and training of the Forest Guard recruits to ensure professionalism, competence and accountability.

Ododo said his administration would continue to expand security manpower, but stressed that only persons of proven character, integrity and loyalty would be trusted with the responsibility of protecting lives and property.

He said the state government would not compromise on the quality of personnel being recruited into the security structure.

The governor expressed confidence in the trainees, describing them as a valuable addition to Kogi’s security architecture.

He urged them to take their training seriously and prepare themselves for the task ahead.

The visit to the training camp came a day after Ododo inspected the first batch of Armoured Personnel Carriers procured by the state government.

The vehicles were acquired to improve the operational capacity and combat readiness of security agencies in the state.

Ododo said security remained a top priority of his administration and promised sustained investment in personnel, equipment and intelligence-driven operations.

He said the goal was to make Kogi safer and more attractive for investment, development and lawful economic activities.

The governor assured residents that his administration would continue to intensify efforts until all parts of the state were secured.

He said citizens must be able to go about their lawful activities without fear of attacks, abductions or harassment by criminal elements.

Ododo said the government would continue to work with federal security agencies, local stakeholders and communities to strengthen security across the state.

President Tinubu had on May 15 approved the nationwide Presidential Forest Guards Initiative to secure the country’s 1,129 designated forests.

The initiative is aimed at flushing out terrorists, bandits and criminal gangs from forests across the country.

The programme is being implemented as a joint security effort between the federal and state governments.

Abducted Widow Of Late General Rabe Regains Freedom

June 15, 2026

By Richard Ogunsile

Hajiya Amina Abubakar, widow of the late Major General Abubakar Rabe (retd.), has regained freedom after weeks in captivity.

Amina was abducted alongside her husband on May 30, 2026, when their vehicle was ambushed along the Marabar Musawa-Kafinsoli road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The couple were said to be travelling for a wedding when they ran into the ambush.

Naija News reports that the abduction had sparked concern among residents and security stakeholders in Katsina State, especially after the couple were held by their captors for several days.

Two weeks after the incident, the death of the retired senior military officer was announced.

However, his captors refused to release his widow at the time, leaving her family and associates worried about her safety.

According to Daily Trust, Amina regained her freedom on Monday after soldiers engaged the bandits in a gun battle.

The military operation reportedly led to her release from captivity.

Details of the operation were still sketchy as of the time of filing this report, while it was not immediately clear whether any of the bandits were killed or arrested during the encounter.

‘How Body Of General Rabe Abubakar Was Recovered From Bandit’s Den’

June 15, 2026

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

Contradictory accounts have deepened the controversy over how the remains of retired Maj. Gen. Rabe Abubakar were recovered, even as family members questioned the official account of his death in captivity.

Naija News recalls that Abubakar and his wife were abducted on May 30 along the Marabar Musawa-Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The Katsina State Government later announced that the retired senior officer died in captivity, attributing his death to complications from diabetes and hypertension.

However, members of his family disputed the claim, insisting that he had no history of either illness. His wife remains in captivity.

A security source, who spoke on condition of anonymity with Premium Times because he was not authorised to speak publicly, said the kidnappers directed state government officials to a location near Karaduwa community, where the body was handed over before being conveyed to Katsina under military escort.

In a phone interview, the source said an ambulance was sent to Karaduwa after communication with the kidnappers.

The source claimed those involved in the recovery were instructed not to bring security personnel to the location.

“They said they did not want any security presence,” the source said.

According to him, the ambulance was directed to a location near Karaduwa bridge, from where the crew was told to turn the vehicle around towards Matazu before the kidnappers arrived on motorcycles with the body.

“After the driver turned the ambulance, they came with the corpse on motorcycles and handed it over,” the source said.

He added that the kidnappers instructed those present not to touch the body until they had left the area. The source said the remains were later conveyed to Matazu, after which military personnel escorted the ambulance to Katsina.

“While returning home, I saw an ambulance escorted by soldiers conveying the corpse to Katsina,” he said.

Another Account Says Body Was Dumped

Another source from the area, who also spoke anonymously, gave a different account. According to him, the body was found by locals near a sawmill in Karaduwa.

The source said, “Near the area where they have machines used for cutting wood for people who buy and sell, that was where it was dumped.

“The locals later discovered the body and notified security personnel, who came, identified the remains, and picked them up in an ambulance escorted by the army to Katsina.”

The accounts have yet to be independently verified, while military authorities have not publicly commented on the circumstances surrounding the recovery of the remains.

In a post on 𝕏 on Sunday, former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, claimed that “heavily armed bandits” handed over the late general’s body in Katsina before returning to a nearby forest in Matazu.

Melaye did not disclose the source of his information.

Family Seeks Answers

One of the late officer’s sons, Isyaka Abubakar, said the family remained uncertain about how the body was recovered.

“When I announced the time for my father’s funeral prayer, many people began asking how the body was recovered. I told them I did not know and that they should direct such questions to the government,” he said in an interview with Deutsche Welle.

He added, “I myself want to know how the body was recovered without rescuing her.”

The family also dismissed reports that Mrs Abubakar had regained freedom.

“Take it from me, our mother is still in captivity. She has not been released,” Isyaka said.

Her continued detention has heightened concern among relatives and residents as efforts to secure her release continue.

The prosecuting team is led by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) and supported by the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN).

Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee said the programme, which starts at 4pm, will be attended by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan, while the prayer recital will be led by Putra Mosque grand imam Dr Muhamad Zakuwa Rodzali.

The main celebration will take place tomorrow, in conjunction with 1 Muharam 1448H, at Putra Mosque from 7am and will see the presentation of the National and International Tokoh Ma’al Hijrah Awards.

Pahang Sultan: Tahfiz students can become future AI, medical, and engineering experts

15 Jun 2026

KUANTAN, June 15 — Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah is confident that tahfiz education in the state can produce huffaz (Quran memorisers) who will become future experts and leaders in strategic fields.

His Royal Highness said huffaz have the potential to pursue careers in medicine, engineering, technology, artificial intelligence and economics, while emerging as future national leaders, in line with the demands of an increasingly challenging and technology-driven world.

“With a strong Quranic foundation, they can emerge as future leaders who not only excel professionally, but are also grounded in religious values, possess noble character and uphold high integrity,” he said at the 2026 Pahang State Maahad Tahfiz Excellence Award ceremony here today.

At the event, Al-Sultan Abdullah also presented awards to 48 tahfiz students who excelled in academics, Quran memorisation and co-curricular activities.

His Royal Highness said the inclusion of Pahang State Maahad Tahfiz and Pahang State Turath Maahad Tahfiz among the top three schools nationwide in the 2025 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination reflected the success of the state’s tahfiz education system.

“The achievement demonstrates our success in producing huffaz who excel in both religious understanding and academics. My aspiration to make the Tahfiz Institute a leading tahfiz education institution in Malaysia has become a reality,” he said.

Al-Sultan Abdullah also described the establishment of Universiti Al-Quran Al-Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah Pahang (UNIQSAAS) as a significant and historic step towards strengthening the state’s Islamic education ecosystem.

“I believe this effort will strengthen the Islamic education ecosystem in Pahang and position the state as a leader in tahfiz and Quranic studies in Malaysia,” he said.

The Sultan also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to elevating Quranic studies at all levels of education to produce more scholars, professionals and leaders guided by Quranic values for the benefit of religion, the nation and the country. — Bernama

Sarawak boosts Chinese independent schools with RM10m funding for education development

16 Jun 2026

KUCHING, June 16 — The Sarawak government has allocated RM10 million in grants to Independent Chinese Secondary Schools (ICSS) in the state as part of its continued commitment to supporting educational development across all streams.

The grant was presented by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during a courtesy call by the Sarawak United Association of Private Chinese Secondary School Management Boards at the Satria Pertiwi Complex here on Monday.

Leading the delegation was the association’s chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming who was joined by deputy chairman Dato Sri Richard Wee Liang Chiat, treasurer Dato Sri Song Tiing Seng and assistant secretary-general Kuang Wei Hua.

Also present was Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.

According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, the allocation reflects the state government’s inclusive policy of recognising the role of all streams of education producing quality human capital and contributing to the state’s development.

Since 2014, the Sarawak government has consistently provided annual aid to the schools, with total allocations reaching RM102 million over a 13-year period.

The increase in funding from RM3 million to RM10 million annually has also helped ease the financial burden on school management boards while ensuring the continued development of these educational institutions.

During the courtesy call, representatives of the association expressed appreciation for the state government’s sustained support, describing it as an essential factor in enhancing academic excellence and nurturing graduates capable of contributing to Sarawak’s growth.

The support is also aligned with Sarawak’s broader policy of ensuring equitable access to educational opportunities, including through the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES).

As of the first quarter of this year, a total of 4,694 students had benefitted from the scheme, including 94 Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) holders from Chinese independent secondary schools who received full sponsorship for their tertiary studies. — The Borneo Post

Malaysians upbeat on AI’s daily benefits, but less sure it will help job market and economy, Ipsos survey finds

16 Jun 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — Malaysians are broadly optimistic about artificial intelligence and its impact on daily life and work, but remain less certain that the technology will improve the wider job market and national economy, a new survey has found.

According to the Ipsos AI Monitor 2026, the strongest positive sentiment was seen in the workplace, with 82 per cent of Malaysians saying AI tools had saved them time at work in the past year.

This was higher than the global average of 62 per cent.

“China leads the region in its enthusiasm towards AI, while Malaysians share the broader Asian outlook and remain confident in AI’s potential,” the report said.

On overall sentiment, 70 per cent of Malaysians said AI products and services had more benefits than drawbacks.

This was lower than China’s 85 per cent, but above the global average of 55 per cent and higher than Western Europe and the United States, where the figures stood at 44 per cent and 38 per cent respectively.

Seveteny per cent of Malaysians said AI products and services made them excited.

This compared with the global average of 51 per cent, 83 per cent in China, 38 per cent in Western Europe and 33 per cent in the United States.

The survey also found that 84 per cent of Malaysians said AI was likely to change how they do their jobs in the next five years, also above the global average of 62 per cent.

The survey was conducted by Ipsos on its Global Advisor online platform between March 20 and April 3 this year, involving 23,532 adults across 32 countries.

In Malaysia, Ipsos surveyed 500 adults aged 18 to 74.

Ipsos noted that samples in Malaysia and several other countries were more urban, educated or affluent than the general population, and should therefore be viewed as reflecting the views of the more “connected” segment of the population.

Anwar welcomes US–Iran agreement, calls for swift progress towards lasting peace

16 Jun 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed the  understanding reached between the United States (US) and Iran toward ending hostilities and the announcement that a memorandum of understanding will be signed in the coming days.

In a Facebook post, Anwar also commended the mediation efforts that led to the development, particularly those undertaken by Pakistan.

He said the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping must now be treated as a matter of the highest urgency, describing it as a critical artery for global energy security and international trade.

“Prolonged disruption would serve no one,” he said.

Anwar urged all parties to act in good faith, proceed without delay and translate the understanding into a durable peace settlement.

“At this delicate moment, all parties and external actors must refrain from any action that could derail diplomacy and renew hostilities,” he said.

The Prime Minister also called on the international community to sustain the momentum towards peace, stressing that Malaysia stands ready to support efforts towards a just and lasting settlement.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that an agreement with Iran had been finalised and said he was authorising the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of a US naval blockade. — Bernama

Malaysia’s ties with major powers don’t compromise national principles, says Anwar

16 Jun 2026

MUAR, June 16 — Maintaining good relations with major world powers such as China and the United States has never weakened Malaysia’s position in upholding its national principles on international issues, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

He pointed out that Malaysia practises a policy of friendship with all countries while remaining firm in safeguarding national interests, including in matters relating to trade, investment and law enforcement.

“We are friends to all but we keep our principles. If they (Israel) do something wrong against Gaza, we will say it is wrong,” he said during a speech at the Pakatan Harapan (PH) public rally “Keadilan Untuk Bangsa Johor” here last night.

Anwar said Malaysia’s close ties with China, for instance, have brought benefits in trade, investment and education, but the government would not compromise on any violation of the country’s laws.

“We have good relations with China because China has been good to us. We can trade, do business and send our children there to study. However, if there are parties who violate regulations and conduct business without permits, we will still take action. We are friends, but we will always protect national interests,” he said.

Anwar said the good ties Malaysia fostered with various countries, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Egypt, China and the United States allowed it to play a more effective role at the international level without sacrificing national interests.

The Prime Minister said Malaysia’s stand is widely respected at the international stage as the country has hosted many major world leaders recently, including United States President Donald Trump.

Even though Malaysia was not a big country, world leaders such as China President Xi Jinping and Chinese Premier Li Qiang chose to hold official visits here.

Anwar also rejected criticism over the friendly diplomatic approach he practised while receiving foreign leaders, stressing that good relations with world leaders was vital to strengthening cooperation and to create more opportunities for the country.

“My priority is to protect the interests of Malaysians and to ensure the country is respected globally,” he added. — Bernama

Perikatan ‘plus’ agenda still on despite split with Bersatu, says PAS’ Tuan Ibrahim

16 Jun 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has reportedly said the Perikatan Nasional Plus (PN+) agenda will continue despite the party ending its political cooperation with Bersatu.

According to Berita Harian, Tuan Ibrahim said the move had opened more space for Opposition parties to work together under the PN+ framework.

“PN+ is an initiative to establish cooperation with various political parties that want to be with PN,” he was quoted as saying.

Tuan Ibrahim said PAS’s good ties with Parti Wawasan Negara, founded by Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, marked the start of this more open approach.

He said PAS would also review applications from other parties, including Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) and Berjasa.

“We are opening the door to cooperation with all parties to ensure the Opposition has one voice in facing Pakatan Harapan in the next general election,” he said.

He added that all parties in the arrangement must be bound by a common position on elections and political work.

Asked when the PN+ strategic pact would be formally announced, Tuan Ibrahim said this would be decided at the appropriate time.

Berita Harian reported that PAS had previously been working on the formation of PN+, involving existing component parties including Bersatu, as well as the movement led by Hamzah.

On June 8, PAS announced that it was ending political cooperation with Bersatu, raising questions over the direction and continuity of the proposed PN+ arrangement.

Sarawak minister calls for tighter school oversight after alleged teacher misconduct case in Lawas

16 Jun 2026

KUCHING, June 16 — School management must strengthen oversight and guidance to prevent incidents of sexual misconduct involving teachers, said Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

“This should not happen. It is a human right issue. We do not want incidents like this to occur, but they can still happen.

“Therefore, what we can do is strengthen school management,” the Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development told reporters after officiating the STEM Catalyst 2026 event at SMK Padawan yesterday.

He was responding to the latest case of alleged sexual misconduct involving a teacher in Lawas that recently went viral on social media.

Sagah added that school administrators had a crucial responsibility to provide adequate education and guidance to both teachers and students.

“Those holding administrative positions in schools must provide sufficient education and guidance to teachers and students.

“Secondly, there must be a strong warning against things that are wrong and should not happen,” he said.

The Sarawak Education Department is cooperating with the relevant authorities in the ongoing investigation into the alleged incident.

At the same time, the Ministry of Education’s Integrity Unit and the Inspectorate of Schools (Jemaah Nazir) have initiated their own internal investigations into the matter.

The police are also investigating the allegation. — The Borneo Post

Kabul to Host Regional Think Tank Meeting with Central Asian States

By Fidel Rahmati

June 15, 2026

Kabul will host a high-level meeting on Tuesday, bringing together research institutions from Afghanistan, Central Asian countries, and Azerbaijan.

According to the ministry of Foreing affairs, heads of strategic research centres, scholars and policy advisers linked to presidential offices from Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Azerbaijan will participate in the gathering.

The meeting comes at a time when Afghanistan’s broader regional diplomatic engagement remains uncertain, with the Taliban administration seeking to expand formal ties with neighbouring states while facing limited international recognition.

Discussions at the forum focus on regional connectivity, stability, trade, energy cooperation, transit routes, investment and broader economic collaboration among participating countries.

Officials said the meeting will also assess current cooperation between Afghanistan and Central Asia and propose practical, implementation-focused recommendations aimed at strengthening regional engagement.

The session is set to open with remarks by Taliban Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, who is expected to outline Afghanistan’s approach to a more economic and regionally balanced foreign policy.

Afghanistan’s relations with Central Asian states have gradually expanded in areas such as trade, transit and infrastructure, particularly as regional countries seek new connectivity routes and economic partnerships. However, political uncertainty in Kabul continues to limit the depth of formal diplomatic engagement.

Central Asian countries have maintained pragmatic engagement with Kabul, focusing on security concerns, border stability and economic cooperation, while avoiding full political recognition of the administration. This has created a cautious but ongoing channel of regional dialogue driven largely by economic interests.

Afghanistan’s Security: A Bed for Regional Investment

June 15, 2026

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has once again underscored its commitment to strengthening regional economic connectivity, with Ambassador Bilal Karimi declaring that Afghanistan is ready to attract investment from China and other neighboring countries.

His remarks at the 7th China–South Asia Cooperation Forum reflect a growing confidence that Afghanistan’s improved security and economy-focused policies have created favorable conditions for investors.

For any investor, two factors are paramount; personal safety and the security of their investment. As economic analyst noted, these conditions have now been established in Afghanistan. The Islamic Emirate’s emphasis on nationwide stability has transformed the country into a safer environment, where businesses can operate without fear of disruption. This achievement is not merely a domestic milestone; it is the key to unlocking Afghanistan’s potential as a regional hub for trade and transit.

The  Islamic Emirate’s success in ensuring security has laid the groundwork for economic growth. By curbing threats and maintaining order, Afghanistan has created the confidence necessary for foreign investors to consider long-term commitments. This stability is the most powerful incentive, demonstrating that Afghanistan is not only open for business but also capable of protecting those who choose to invest.

Afghanistan’s geographic position makes it a natural bridge between Central Asia, South Asia, and China. With security now reinforced, the country can fully leverage its role as a transit and trade corridor. Projects in transport, energy, mining, and agriculture sectors, are already attracting interest from Chinese investors. These initiatives promise to integrate Afghanistan more deeply into regional supply chains, enhancing connectivity and prosperity across Asia.

While security provides the foundation, the Islamic Emirate recognizes the importance of complementing stability with economic incentives. Analysts have suggested that introducing investment packages could further accelerate the flow of capital into Afghanistan. Such measures, combined with the Emirate’s commitment to peace and order, would strengthen Afghanistan’s appeal as a destination for regional and global investors.

Afghanistan’s journey toward becoming a regional investment hub rests firmly on the Islamic Emirate’s success in ensuring security. By prioritizing stability, the Emirate has created the conditions necessary for economic cooperation with China and other countries. As Afghanistan continues to expand its role in transit, trade, and connectivity, the assurance of safety will remain its most valuable asset. Afghanistan is ready, secure, and open to investment, offering opportunities that can reshape the economic landscape of the region.

Islami Bank’s new head reassures depositors

16 June 2026

Islami Bank’s interim Chairman Mohammad Zahir Hossain yesterday urged depositors to put to bed two weeks of turmoil at the beleaguered Shariah-based lender and continue their banking activities without hesitation.

“Continue your transactions without hesitation and keep faith in the bank,” he said at a press briefing after assuming office.

Efforts were underway to form a new board as quickly as possible, he said, adding that a five-member board is being constituted through a vetting process to ensure it comprises qualified and completely neutral individuals.

“We want to appoint people who can manage the bank efficiently. Hopefully, you will soon see a balanced and independent board,” said Zahir, an executive director at Bangladesh Bank.

He is serving as a one-member board temporarily to ensure uninterrupted operations during the transition period.

On Sunday night, BB dissolved the entire board of directors of Islami Bank amid massive deposit withdrawals, protests and political controversy triggered by the appointment of Md Khurshid Alam, a former deputy governor of the BB, as its chairman.

“This is an initial victory,” said Nur Nabi Manik, representative of the Conscious Customers Forum, at a briefing yesterday.

The forum has been staging protests since June 1 against Khurshid’s appointment, which eventually contributed to severe liquidity stress at the bank.

Manik presented a seven-point demand, including the immediate formation of a full-fledged board comprising honest, competent and professional individuals through consultation and reinstating Md Omar Faruk as the managing director.

He also demanded that shares allegedly taken forcibly from previous owners be returned.

The protesters will submit a memorandum about their seven-point demand to the BB governor today.

Zahir, however, said Faruk cannot be reinstated as he had already resigned.

“As his resignation has been accepted, there is no scope for bringing him back,” he said.

Meanwhile, large crowds of customers were again seen at various branches yesterday, although Acting MD Md Altaf Hossain said withdrawal pressure had eased somewhat compared with previous days.

To help the bank meet withdrawal demands, BB yesterday provided an additional Tk 2,500 crore in liquidity support, which was not exhausted entirely.

He expressed hope that customers who had withdrawn deposits out of panic would return, noting that account closures at a major branch had fallen by around 75 percent, indicating a gradual recovery in confidence.

The bank has instructed its branches to reactivate certain deposit accounts that were closed and encashed before maturity and to encourage account holders to resume banking transactions in a bid to strengthen cash flow and restore normal banking operations.

In an internal circular issued on Monday, the bank said many customers had become inactive due to the recent situation surrounding the bank, resulting in the closure or dormancy of a number of MTDR (Mudaraba Term Deposit Receipt), MSB, MMPDS and MSS accounts.

Customers whose MTDR, MSB, MMPDS and MSS accounts were closed between June 1 and June 15 will be allowed to reopen those accounts within the next seven working days upon application.

Once reactivated, the accounts will enjoy all regular operational facilities.

The bank has directed all divisions, zones and branches to take immediate steps to contact affected customers through mobile phones and other available means and encourage them to resume transactions.

Earlier yesterday, protesters under the banner of the Conscious Customers Forum held a press conference, describing the central bank’s decision to remove the board as an “initial victory”.

The forum has been demonstrating against the appointment of Islami Bank’s former chairman since June 1. The protests eventually contributed to severe liquidity stress at the bank.

Meanwhile, the Association of Bankers, Bangladesh (ABB) welcomed the BB decision to dissolve the Islami board and facilitate a fresh start for the institution.

In a statement yesterday, ABB Chairman Mashrur Arefin described the move as timely and prudent.

“As the Islami Bank issue had acquired political overtones and given the bank’s systemic importance, ABB expressed its concerns to the governor on June 10.”

The situation was no longer confined to a single institution, and its impact was being felt across the banking sector, it said.

“We believe the decision taken by the central bank is commendable and hope it will restore stability and rebuild the confidence of depositors, investors and other stakeholders.”

ABB said it expects significant progress in governance, accountability, reducing political influence in banking and the recovery of defaulted loans.

Take strict action to stop border killings, push-ins

16 June 2026

The 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami has demanded “visible and strict” action from the government to stop illegal push-ins, border killings, and torture along the Bangladesh-India border.

The alliance also called for a new approach to border management and bilateral relations with India based on equality, dignity and mutual respect.

The demand was raised at a protest rally held at Shahbagh yesterday under the banner, “Immediate end to illegal push-ins, border killings and torture along the Bangladesh-India border.”

Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar attended the programme as chief guest, while alliance coordinator and Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad presided over it.

The programme ended with a procession from Shahbagh to Matsya Bhaban, Jatiya Press Club, and Paltan.

In his speech, Porwar said, “We respect India’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Likewise, India should also show equal respect for Bangladesh’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

He alleged that border killings, torture, and illegal push-ins continue unabated. He also described attempts to push people into Bangladesh under the pretext of citizenship verification and allegations of torture at the border as violations of international law and human rights.

Porwar said people of Bangladesh remain united in protecting the country’s borders, independence, and sovereignty and described the stance of people in border areas as “a courageous resistance”.

He urged the government to take stronger steps to address border killings, push-ins and issues related to sovereignty. He also called for relations with India to be based on equality in areas such as water sharing, border management, and trade.

Hamidur Rahman Azad said one of the key aspirations of the July uprising was to stop border killings, but the situation has not improved.

He claimed that 19 Bangladeshis were killed and 41 others injured in border shootings over the last three months.

He said a parliamentary discussion on border issues was postponed, which he said runs contrary to public expectations.

He also announced the continuation of the movement against border killings and push-ins.

NCP leader Nasiruddin Patwary also demanded an immediate end to border killings, firing incidents, torture, and push-ins.

Indian deputy high commissioner summoned over Zahed’s return from Delhi airport

15 June 2026

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today summoned Indian Deputy High Commissioner Pawan Badhe following the return of Prime Minister's Policy and Strategy Affairs Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman from Delhi airport.

The Indian diplomat was called in to discuss the matter, according to a foreign ministry official.

"He was summoned this afternoon to discuss the issue," the official told this correspondent.

Dr Zahed was stopped at Delhi airport by Indian immigration authorities yesterday evening after his name was flagged during a security check.

Quoting sources, Indian news portal CNN-News18 reported that Zahed was “briefly stopped” as his name reportedly appeared on a security-related watchlist.

“After intervention, the immigration authorities allowed his entry, but the adviser decided to return home,” a source in New Delhi told The Daily Star.

On Sunday afternoon, Bangladesh High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah went to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport to receive him.

According to diplomatic sources, Zahed was travelling to India to attend the 28th Meeting of the Committee of Senior Officials (CSO) of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), scheduled for June 15 and 16 hosted by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

However, after landing, he was questioned by Indian immigration authorities and kept waiting for about two and a half hours without showing any specific reason, Prothom Alo reports.

UN Security Council Extends UNAMA Mandate in Afghanistan Until 2027

By Fidel Rahmati

June 15, 2026

The United Nations Security Council on Monday unanimously extended the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for another year, keeping the mission’s existing responsibilities and priorities largely unchanged.

The resolution extends UNAMA’s mandate until June 17, 2027, following discussions among council members on possible adjustments to the mission’s work.

The 15-member council adopted the resolution unanimously, preserving UNAMA’s core responsibilities, including coordinating international assistance, supporting political engagement, monitoring human rights, and facilitating humanitarian efforts.

China’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Fu Cong, welcomed the decision, saying the resolution maintains and strengthens UNAMA’s key functions while streamlining outdated elements where necessary. He also stressed the importance of counterterrorism cooperation and regional security.

The extension comes as Afghanistan continues to face one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises. According to UN agencies, millions of Afghans require humanitarian assistance, while funding shortages have forced aid organizations to scale back critical food, health and protection programs across the country.

The renewal also comes amid continuing international concerns over human rights, particularly restrictions on women and girls. Since 2021, Afghan women have faced sweeping limitations on education, employment and public participation, prompting repeated calls from the United Nations and rights groups for the restoration of fundamental freedoms.
