'Victory of the Hindus': After Shah Rukh Khan draws flak, BCCI asks KKR to release Bangladesh player; BJP hails move'Victory of the Hindus': After Shah Rukh Khan draws flak, BCCI asks KKR to release Bangladesh player; BJP hails move

NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday welcomed BCCI's decision to instruct Shah Rukh Khan owned Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladesh player Mustafizur Rehman from their roster ahead of Indian Premier League.

BJP leader Sangeet Som thanked BCCI for its decision and hailed it as a "victory of the Hindus of the entire nation."

"Thanks to BCCI for its decision in view of the 100 crore Sanatanis of India," Som said.

"We said yesterday that cognisance will be taken of this matter because the sentiments of 100 crore people cannot be taken lightly. This is the victory of the Hindus of the entire nation," he added.

Earlier in the day, BCCI secretary Devjit Saikia said that the decision was taken "due to the recent development going all across."

"Due to the recent developments which is going on all across, BCCI has instructed the franchise KKR to release one of their player Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh from their squad and BCCI has also said that if they ask for any replacement, BCCI is going to allow that replacement," Saikia told news agency ANI.

Recently, spiritual leaders had launched a broadside against KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan in context of the recent targeting of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh.

Devkinandan Thakur criticised Shah Rukh Khan after KKR acquired right-arm pacer Mustafizur for a massive amount of Rs 9.20 crore during the IPL auction.

"In Bangladesh, Hindus are being brutally murdered, their homes are being burned, and their sisters and daughters are being raped. After witnessing such brutal killings, how can someone be so heartless, especially someone who calls himself the owner of a team? How can he be so cruel as to include a cricketer from that very country in his team?" he said.

Meanwhile, Imam Umer Ahmed Ilyasi, the Chief Imam, All India Imam Organisation, also demanded that Shah Rukh Khan apologise to the nation for inclusion of the Bangladesh pacer in the KKR Squad.

Imam Umer Ahmed Ilyasi said that KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan should give a statement condemning the atrocities being committed against Hindus in Bangladesh and also remove Mustafizur from his team.

"Does Shah Rukh Khan have no information regarding the atrocities being committed against Hindus in Bangladesh?... It is a matter of regret that despite having information regarding the atrocities being committed against Hindus in Bangladesh, KKR selected a Bangladeshi player in the IPL auction. Shah Rukh Khan should apologise to the nation...He should also give a statement condemning the atrocities being committed against Hindus in Bangladesh," Imam Umer Ahmed Ilyasi told ANI.

Earlier, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam had urged KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan to remove the Bangladeshi player from his team before the before he becomes a target.

"When the entire country is enraged and angry at Bangladesh, anyone in India who has even the slightest connection to Bangladeshis could become a target of that anger. If there is a Bangladeshi in Shah Rukh Khan's team, before he becomes a major target, we request that Shah Rukh Khan remove the Bangladeshi from his team. This will be for his own good and will also protect India's interests," Sanjay Nirupam told ANI.

Reacting to the controversy, Congress leader Supriya Shrinate said the focus should be on who permitted Bangladeshi players to be included in the IPL auction in the first place.

"First of all, I want to ask who put the Bangladeshi players in that pool. This question is for the BCCI and the ICC. Home Minister's son, Jay Shah, should answer who put the Bangladeshi players in the pool where IPL players are bought and sold, the pool where the players' auction takes place... he is the ICC's chief and the main decision-maker in cricket all around the world," she said.

This comes as Bangladesh saw a series of violent incidents targeting members if Hindu community.

Last month, two Hindu youths were lynched in separate incidents. Dipu Chandra Das, a garment factory worker in Mymensingh district, was beaten to death over alleged blasphemy charges on December 18, after which his body was reportedly hanged and set on fire.

In another case, a Hindu youth identified as Amrit Mondal was lynched in Hosendanga village of Kalimohor Union in Rajbari’s Pangsha sub-district over an alleged extortion dispute.

These incidents have triggered widespread outrage and condemnation from political leaders, religious organisations and minority groups in both Bangladesh and India.

Jordan condemns Israel over seizure of planning powers at Ibrahimi Mosque

January 02, 2026

--------------

AMMAN: Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates on Friday strongly condemned Israel for its decision to strip Hebron Municipality of its planning and construction authority over the Ibrahimi Mosque in the West Bank.

The ministry described the move as a blatant violation of international law and the historical and legal status quo at the holy site, the Jordan News Agency reported.

On Wednesday, the Israeli Civil Administration, which oversees the occupied West Bank, said it had transferred planning powers from the Palestinian Authority’s Hebron Municipality to its own Supreme Planning Council. The announcement was accompanied by approval for a project to construct a roof over the mosque’s internal courtyard, a move that has drawn fierce opposition from Palestinians.

The municipality condemned the decision as a “serious and illegal violation” by Israeli authorities, describing it as part of a systematic effort to alter the status quo at the mosque and weaken the authority of Palestinian institutions responsible for its management.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry said Israel, as the occupying power, was acting unlawfully by unilaterally approving construction work at the mosque and stripping Palestinian authorities of their administrative powers. The actions undermine Islamic administration of the site, it warned.

Fouad Al-Majali, official spokesperson for the ministry, affirmed Jordan’s “absolute rejection and severe condemnation” of continuing illegal, unilateral actions by Israel in the occupied West Bank.

Such actions constitute clear violations of international law and international humanitarian law, he added, including the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, and UN resolutions.

Al-Majali also highlighted the 2017 decision by UNESCO to add Hebron’s Old City, and the Ibrahimi Mosque, to its the List of World Heritage in Danger.

He urged the international community to fulfill its “legal and moral responsibilities” by compelling Israeli authorities to halt their illegal activities in the occupied territory, and protect and preserve the cultural and religious heritage of the Ibrahimi Mosque, which he said was under increasing threat as a result of Israel’s actions.

Regional security and a just and comprehensive peace will remain impossible goals unless the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people are fulfilled, Al-Majali said, including the right to self-determination, including the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Arab and Muslim foreign ministers warn of worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza amid severe weather

January 02, 2026

------------

GAZA — The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Pakistan, Türkiye, Qatar and Egypt on Friday expressed deep concern over the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

They warned that harsh and unstable weather conditions have compounded an already severe crisis caused by the continued lack of adequate humanitarian aid.

In a joint statement, the ministers said heavy rainfall, violent storms and plunging temperatures have intensified human suffering in Gaza, particularly as the entry of life-saving supplies remains restricted and the flow of essential materials needed to restore basic services and establish temporary shelters remains slow.

They stressed that the extreme weather has exposed the fragility of humanitarian conditions for nearly 1.9 million displaced Palestinians living in unsafe shelters.

Flooded camps, damaged tents, the collapse of already weakened buildings, and exposure to cold temperatures — combined with malnutrition — have significantly increased risks to civilian lives, including the spread of disease, especially among children, women, the elderly and those with serious medical conditions.

The ministers commended the continued efforts of United Nations agencies, particularly the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), as well as international humanitarian organizations operating under extremely difficult conditions.

They called on Israel to ensure that the UN and international non-governmental organizations can operate sustainably, predictably and without restrictions in Gaza and the West Bank, stressing that any attempt to obstruct their work is unacceptable.

They reaffirmed their full support for UN Security Council Resolution 2803 and the comprehensive plan proposed by US President Donald Trump, expressing their readiness to contribute to its successful implementation.

The ministers said the plan must ensure the sustainability of the ceasefire, bring an end to the war in Gaza, and secure a dignified life for the Palestinian people, while opening a credible path toward Palestinian self-determination and statehood.

The statement also underscored the urgent need to immediately launch and expand early recovery efforts, including the provision of permanent and dignified shelter to protect civilians from harsh winter conditions.

The ministers urged the international community to uphold its legal and moral responsibilities and to exert pressure on Israel, as the occupying power, to immediately lift restrictions on the entry and distribution of essential supplies. These include tents, shelter materials, medical aid, clean water, fuel and support for sanitation services.

They further called for the immediate, full and unhindered entry of humanitarian assistance into Gaza through the United Nations and its agencies, the rehabilitation of infrastructure and hospitals, and the opening of the Rafah crossing in both directions, in line with the comprehensive plan announced by President Trump.

Tehran demands UN response to Trump’s threats

---------

The Iranian government has formally demanded action from the United Nations following a series of increasingly bellicose statements from US President Donald Trump, including a claim that Washington is poised to intervene in the ongoing unrest in the Islamic Republic.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday, Iranian Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani accused Trump of “incitement to violence, unrest, and terrorist acts” within Iran.

“The President of the United States openly threatened the Islamic Republic of Iran with the use of force and intervention, declaring that ‘We are locked and loaded and ready to go,’” he wrote.

“These repeated and deliberate statements demonstrate a consistent pattern of unlawful conduct by the United States,” the letter reads, further detailing a long history of alleged US interference in Iranian affairs, including the 1953 coup, support for Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq War, the downing of Iran Air Flight 655, and the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani six years ago.

Large-scale protests erupted in Iran in late December, initially sparked by economic hardship, including the national currency hitting a new low. Demonstrations have spread and become increasingly violent; protesters have attacked  government buildings and clashed with security forces.

Several casualties have also been reported among both the protesters and the security forces.

Trump claimed in a post on Truth Social on Friday that if Iran “shoots and violently kills peaceful protesters,” the US would “come to their rescue.”

This prompted a warning from Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf, who stated on X that US forces in the Middle East would be considered “legitimate targets” should Washington intervene.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has acknowledged the right of citizens to demonstrate peacefully, but emphasized that acts of violence during the protests, as well as foreign interference, will not be tolerated.

“The Great People of Iran will forcefully reject any interference in their internal affairs,” Araghchi wrote on X. “Similarly, our Powerful Armed Forces are on standby and know exactly where to aim in the event of any infringement of Iranian sovereignty.”

The Iranian ambassador’s letter to the UN calls on the Security Council to “unequivocally and strongly condemn these reckless and provocative statements” and demands the US comply with international law, ceasing “all threats or uses of force.”

'Potential terrorist attack': FBI says it thwarted New Year’s Eve plot in North Carolina; claims suspect 'inspired by ISIS'

Jan 2, 2026

US Federal authorities stopped an ISIS-inspired attack planned for New Year's Eve, allegedly by an 18-year-old North Carolina man. Christan Sturdivant from Mint Hill was arrested for plotting to use knives and hammers to harm people, according to the details revealed by the Justice Department on Friday.

The plan was to allegedly attack people inside a grocery store and fast food restaurant in North Carolina, prosecutors said, as reported by Fox News.

"The FBI and our law enforcement partners thwarted a potential terrorist attack on New Year's Eve in North Carolina. The subject was directly inspired to act by ISIS," the FBI's Charlotte unit said in a post on X.

FBI director Kash Patel also confirmed the details saying, "The FBI and partners foiled another potential New Year's Eve attack from an individual allegedly inspired by ISIS."

The FBI found a handwritten plan titled "New Years Attack 2026." The plan showed his intentions to stab up to 20 people and attack police officers who would respond to the scene.

The teen faces serious charges of providing support to a foreign terrorist group. The Justice Department is handling the case. So far, Sturdivant hasn't entered any plea regarding these charges, as reported by Reuters.

The Islamic State West Africa Province Threatening Christians Not Muslims – Buhari’s Ex-Aide

January 2, 2026

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

Former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, has condemned the recent threats by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) against Christians in Nigeria, stating that the group’s actions have no basis in Islam.

Ahmad made the remarks on Friday via his official 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) handle, distancing the terrorist group from Islamic values and describing their campaign as a distortion of the religion.

“The ISWAP terrorists threatening Christians to convert to Islam or face death are obviously not Muslims and their actions in no way represent Islam or its teachings,” Ahmad wrote.

He stressed that Islam forbids coercion in matters of faith and recalled that the religion was spread through peaceful means.

“Islam was never spread through coercion, intimidation or violence. The Qur’an is explicit that there is no compulsion in religion.

“Even during the time of our beloved Prophet (PBUH), Muslims coexisted peacefully with non-Muslims in both Makkah and Madinah, bound by mutual respect, justice and shared humanity, ” he said.

Ahmad described ISWAP’s threats and violent actions as a betrayal of Islamic principles and humanity at large.

“What these terrorists are doing is a complete betrayal of Islam and a distortion of its values. Their renewed campaign of violence and intimidation is utterly condemnable and it stands against both our religion and humanity,” he added.

Malaysian Police need ‘weapons’ like Sosma, Internal Security Act to counter extremist threats, says deputy IGP

By Malay Mail

03 Jan 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 3 — Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the police need to be equipped with “weapons” in the form of preventive legal measures such as the Internal Security Act (ISA) and Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) to address complex extremist threats.

He said the government must not underestimate security risks or the capabilities of extremist and militant groups, citing the 2002 Bali bombings as a warning against downplaying cross-border extremist networks.

“Some politicians, legal practitioners and human rights groups focus solely on one aspect of PDRM’s actions under preventive laws such as the ISA and Sosma,” he said in a Facebook post today.

“There are matters that I can share with the public — and many others that, if disclosed, would cause extreme public anxiety,” he added.

Ayob Khan said the Bali attacks on October 12, 2002, carried out by Jemaah Islamiah (JI), were Southeast Asia’s first suicide bombings, killing 202 people and injuring more than 200 others.

He said investigations showed the attacks were planned months in advance and involved operatives moving across borders, including through Thailand and Malaysia, underscoring the regional nature of extremist networks.

According to Ayob Khan, Malaysia was not merely a transit point, as JI operatives entered the country to obtain logistics, assemble explosives and coordinate funding before the attacks.

He said senior JI figures had held clandestine meetings in Bangkok in early 2002 to finalise plans for bombings in Indonesia and at the Johor–Singapore Causeway.

Ayob Khan said sustained operations by the Royal Malaysia Police Special Branch since December 2001 disrupted much of JI’s network in Malaysia and eventually foiled a planned attack at the Causeway.

He added that the Bali case illustrated how intelligence-led and preventive action was critical to stopping extremist attacks before violence occurred.

Humanitarian, Economic Issues Must Be Separated from Afghan Politics, Nazari Emphasizes

January 3, 2026

KABUL: Abdul Latif Nazari, Deputy Minister for Policy at the Ministry of Economy, has called for a clear separation between humanitarian and economic assistance and political considerations, warning that politicizing aid undermines international humanitarian principles and unfairly harms the people of Afghanistan.

Reacting to Afghanistan’s removal from a list of recipients of $2 billion in U.S. funding allocated to the United Nations, Nazari stressed that humanitarian assistance should not be politicized.

“Although Afghanistan’s current policy is based on self-reliance and the use of internal resources, excluding Afghanistan from humanitarian aid is inconsistent with the principles of international law and stands in contradiction to humanitarian practices,” he told BBC correspondent Sajjad Mohammadi.

“We believe that economic and humanitarian issues should be clearly separated from political issues, and humanitarian assistance must not be politicized,” the deputy minister said, adding: “Undoubtedly, the people of Afghanistan have the right to benefit from and receive assistance from the international community.”

It should be mentioned that officials of the Islamic Emirate have repeatedly urged the international community in the past to decouple humanitarian assistance from political considerations, arguing that aid should be delivered solely based on human need.

J&K Police order probe after cricketer seen wearing Palestine flag logo during Jammu tournament

Muzaffar Raina

03.01.26

Jammu and Kashmir police on Friday ordered an inquiry after a video on social media showed a Kashmiri cricketer wearing a helmet with a logo of the Palestinian flag during a private tournament in Jammu.

The Right-wing ecosystem was quick to pounce on the viral video, terming the display of the logo an “anti-national act”.

A police spokesman said the video showed cricketer Furqan Ul Haq, a resident of Tangipuna in Pulwama, “playing cricket at KC Door in Muthi while displaying a Palestine logo on his helmet”.

The video, however, identified the cricketer as Furqan Bhat, representing JK 11 Kings in the ongoing Jammu and Kashmir Champions League, which started on December 29. The match in question was played on Wednesday.

The spokesman said a 14-day preliminary inquiry under Section 173(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) had been initiated in view of the “sensitivity of the matter and its potential public order implications” at the Domana police station to ascertain the facts, intent and background of the individual.

Police sources said Furqan and tournament organiser Fahad Bhat were summoned and questioned, but there were no reports of any of them being detained during the day.

Last year, Kashmir witnessed multiple protests against the Israeli attacks

on Gaza and Iran, prompting the police to act against the agitators.

Kashmiri politicians have been fiercely critical of Israel and its actions in Gaza and the West Bank.

Last year, chief minister Omar Abdullah had called out the alleged hypocrisy of the western nations for their silence on Israel’s actions.

“As far as I know, Iran gave no reason to Israel to launch an attack. Israel calls them pre-emptive strikes to attack a country. If world powers remain silent on it, it will be tragic,” Omar had said after Israel attacked Iran.

He had also asked the Centre to mount pressure on Israel to stop the bloodshed

in Palestine.

The Kashmiri cricketer’s support for Palestine sparked condemnation from the Right-wing ecosystem.

“No place for foreign flags on Indian soil. Cricketer Furqan Bhat summoned after flashing a Palestine flag on his helmet during a J&K league match. Sports turned into propaganda, pitch turned political. J&K Police probing intent. Play cricket for India — not import global agendas,” wrote Aripta Chatterjee, whose X handle identifies her as an assistant professor who is followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association has distanced itself from the controversy and said the tournament was a private one and not recognised by the association.

Last month, the Omar government had ordered a probe after a controversy over Valley Muslims dominating Jammu and Kashmir’s 20-member Santosh Trophy squad triggered allegations of religious and regional bias.

‘Recycled propaganda’: India dismisses claims of Pakistani strikes in Punjab during Operation Sindoor

02.01.26

Some Pakistani elements are using social media to allegedly circulate “misleading and unverified satellite images”, falsely claiming strikes on Indian military facilities in Punjab during Operation Sindoor with the aim to “resurrect a failed narrative”, people familiar with the matter told PTI on Friday.

Independent verification of the locations shown in these images “confirms that no destruction or damage is visible” at the alleged targets, they said, adding that the latest social media push relies on unverified imagery and “recycled propaganda”, which does not withstand independent scrutiny.

“In a desperate attempt to ‘resurrect a failed narrative’, some Pakistani elements have ‘once again turned to social media to circulate misleading and unverified satellite images, falsely claiming strikes on Indian military facilities in Punjab, including areas around Amritsar, during Operation Sindoor,’” a person familiar with the matter said.

The facts, however, remain unchanged and there is no credible evidence to support claims of Pakistani strikes on Indian military facilities in Punjab during Operation Sindoor, they said.

Indian military facilities cited in the posts “remain intact, with no signs of blast impact, structural damage, or secondary effects that would be expected from a strike,” another person familiar with the matter said.

The sudden appearance of these visuals seven months later, “without verifiable timestamps, satellite-source details, or corroboration, suggests a post facto attempt to manufacture evidence rather than present genuine documentation,” they added.

India launched Operation Sindoor on 7 May last year in response to the Pahalgam terror attack and engaged in a four-day military conflict with Pakistan.

During press briefings at the time, Indian officials and military officers had underlined that they had to also counter a “misinformation campaign”.

Who is he to question? BJP on New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Umar Khalid note

Jan 3, 2026

NEW DELHI: New York mayor Zohran Mamdani’s words of sympathy for activist Umar Khalid, who has been in jail for over five years for his alleged involvement in a Delhi riots conspiracy case, drew a furious response Friday from BJP which said an outsider had no right to question Indian judiciary.

“If any person supports an accused, comments on India’s internal affairs, then India will not tolerate it. Who is an outsider to question our democracy and judiciary, not the least offering support for someone who wants to break India?” BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said. BJP’s strong words were also addressed to some US lawmakers, who have backed the demand for Khalid’s release.

BJP also accused Congress’s Rahul Gandhi of meeting “enemies” of india and acting as a “force-multiplier” for “anti-India” voices.

Mamdani’s widely-reported letter to Khalid has especially angered BJP as the “democratic socialist” of Indian descent has a history of criticising India’s governing party and PM Narendra Modi.

With New York home to a sizeable south Asian Muslim diaspora, BJP will be watchful of his attempts to step into India’s domestic issues as he looks to build his political profile beyond city politics. Muslims, believed to make up 7% of registered voters but estimated to have accounted for 15% of the votes cast in last year's mayoral polls, were the backbone of Mamdani’s spectacularly successful campaign. His handwritten note to Umar had said, “I think of your words on bitterness often, and the importance of not letting it consume one’s self. It was a pleasure to meet your parents. We are all thinking of you,” referring to his meeting with Umar Khalid’s father, SQ R Ilyas.Formerly of now-banned SIMI, Ilyas is associated with Welfare Party of India, and is a prominent face of All India Muslim Personal Law Board.

Without naming Mamdani, Bhatia said his letter was not appropriate and violated decorum. “If it comes to India’s sovereignty, then 140 crore Indians will stand with Modi’s leadership,” he said.

Khalid has been booked under UAPA 1967, and provisions of IPC for allegedly being the a key conspirator behind the Feb 2020 Delhi riots.

BJP's IT department head Amit Malviya also responded to the note. He said on X, “Soon after taking oath as Mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani appoints Ramzi Kassem as NYC Chief Counsel, who defended Ahmed al-Darbi in an al-Qaeda related terrorism case and also goes on to pen a letter in support of incarcerated Umar Khalid. This is not coincidence. It is ideological clarity. Join the dots.”

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat says BJP, VHP, work independently, not controlled by Sangh

03 Jan 2026

BHOPAL: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said on Friday that organisations like the BJP, VHP or the Vidya Bharti work independently and not controlled by the Sangh.

“RSS develops Swayamsevaks by ingraining in them values and thoughts to work for Bharat’s ‘param vaibhav’ (absolute glory). But those Swayamsevaks aren’t remotely controlled by the Sangh. BJP, VHP, or Vidya Bharti being run by our Swayamsevaks function with an independent identity and as per their Constitution.

But their vision of working for India’s absolute glory is common,” Bhagwat said, while addressing a gathering of prominent citizens in Bhopal.

“They make their own decisions and work with people, including non-Swayamsevaks. When we told this to people 40 years back, they mocked us saying we were indulging in a game of words, but now people have started realising what we actually meant to say,” he said.

Bhagwat said no parallels can be drawn between the RSS and any other organisation as its functioning is unique. “Because we perform ‘path sanchalan’ and perform tasks with lathis, RSS should not be mistaken as a paramilitary force. Both Sangh’s supporters and opponents have spread many false narratives about the RSS,” he said.

BJP paper, Muslim League’s words: As Left revels in rival dailies’ editorial faux pas, it gets reminded of 2010 gaffe

January 3, 2026

In a comedy of errors, the Kannur edition of the BJP’s Kerala mouthpiece Janmabhumi published the editorial page of the Indian Union Muslim League’s daily Chandrika on New Year’s Day, leaving readers flummoxed. However, as Left leaders and supporters on Friday tried to poke fun at the dailies run by its rivals, they were reminded of a similar blunder by their official party organ over 15 years ago.

The January 1 edit page of Chandrika, which was mistakenly published by Janmabhumi, carried the articles of IUML state president Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal and senior leader M K Muneer. While the Kannur editions of both the dailies are printed at different presses, they depend on a private centre where digital pages are converted into printing plates. That is where the mistake occurred, it is learnt.

“The blunder seemed to have happened due to New Year’s pressure. The conversion of the digital pages into printing plates was done at a private centre. Many newspapers depend on the same centre for the plate-making process. These plates are manually carried to the nearby press by their own staff. The newspaper’s production staff are only at the printing press. The centre should have downloaded Chandrika only after downloading the entire pages of Janmabhumi. The mess up happened while carrying the plates to the press. At the same time, the Chandrika pages remained safe,” said a Janmabhumi official who did not wish to be named.

The official said Janmabhumi would initiate legal proceedings against the centre, where the newspapers have been printing plates for the last 19 years. “Our production staff are also under the scanner,” he added. On Friday, Janmabhumi carried a corrigendum on the edit page of the Kannur edition. It said the computer to plate making firm had admitted to its mistake and expressed regret. The paper said its management had also decided to take legal action against the firm.

As Left supporters and leaders on Friday made fun of the faux pas, an IUML leader pointed out that CPI(M)-affiliated daily Deshabhimani’s Gulf edition had carried the edit page of Chandrika in 2010.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s press secretary P M Manoj, in his Facebook page, wrote, “Both the dailies can justify the incident as a mistake. It may happen when two newspapers are printed at the same press. Although Chandrika’s edit page got printed in Janmabhumi daily, it is a wonder that there is not a single line in that edit page that deals with the BJP’s politics. That means the BJP can fully accommodate the editorial policy of Chandrika. This is what is called an undercurrent.”

In response, IUML’s former legislator K N A Khader reminded Deshabhimani’s mistake in 2010. He shared the paper’s Gulf edition on December 29, 2010, which published Chandrika’s editorial page that had his article criticising the Left. “It created a major controversy. Deshabhimani took back the unsold copies following the blunder. I had witnessed agents flitting in and out of shops to collect the unsold copies,” the IUML leader wrote on Facebook.

Next Mumbai mayor will be Hindu and Marathi: CM Fadnavis

January 2, 2026

Expressing confidence over the victory of the ruling Mahayuti alliance in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation polls, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said the next Mumbai mayor will be a Hindu and Marathi.

The elections for 29 municipal corporations including BMC will take place on January 15 and results on January 16.

During an interactive session with a news channel, Fadnavis said, “ The Mumbai mayor will be from the Mahayuti. The Mumbai mayor will be a Hindu and Marathi person.”

The emphasis on terms “Hindu” and “Marathi” assumes great significance given the political dynamics that have evolved in the civic body elections, with the reunion of estranged Thackeray cousins – Uddhav and Raj, followed by attempts by Opposition parties to consolidate Muslim vote banks against BJP.

To effectively counter Congress/Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi and Shiv Sena/MNS/NCP alliances in BMC, BJP has adopted the strategy to aggressively push Hindutva agenda. Also using the development agenda it aims to cut through the Marathi vote bank which is Thackeray’s mainstay.

Earlier, Mumbai BJP president Ameet Satam had remarked his party would not allow any “Khan” to become the city’s mayor.

The remark invited sharp reactions from Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).

Commenting on the controversial remark of BJP leader Kripa Shankar Singh alleging the next mayor would be from the North Indian community, Fadnavis said, “ Singh’s remark was not in the context of Mumbai.” Moreover, he pointed out, “ Singh was not the party’s spokesperson.”

Jammu ‘raid’ for Bangla vendors by right-wing activists triggers police action

Muzaffar Raina

03.01.26

Right-wing activists on Friday surveyed street vendors in Jammu to look

for Bangladeshis and Rohingya refugees, prompting Jammu and Kashmir police to intervene.

The activists scanned several localities in Jammu, asking the vendors for their Aadhaar cards. They were seen pasting stickers reading “Main Bharatiya, Mera Bharat Mahan (I am an Indian, my India is great)” on the carts run by Indians.

Videos showed a police team led by an inspector intervening and politely asking the activists to desist until permission was obtained.

Manish Saini, a leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction, said he was leading the campaign to check for Bangladeshis and Rohingya refugees.

“Any illegal Bangladeshi or Rohingya will in no way be allowed to settle here. We have started a campaign — Main Bharatiya Mera Bharat Mahan — under which we went to places to check the documents of street vendors. We gently asked them to show their Aadhaar cards. Everything is being done within the limits of the law,” he said.

Saini claimed that three to four vendors deserted their carts as soon as they saw the activists coming. The Shiv Sena leader said the police asked the activists to apply for permission. “We are approaching the deputy commissioner (for a formal permission),” he said. “We are doing everything in the interest of the nation and will continue our campaign.”

‘Unsettled’ Kashmir

Hurriyat chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday said the unresolved Kashmir issue continues to keep the region in an unsettled state despite the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, warning that the region can erupt anytime if a solution continues to elude.

“Despite making unilateral changes in 2019, the reality is that the Kashmir conflict continues to keep the region in an unsettled state that can erupt anytime. That is why wars are paused, not ended, and dialogue finds no takers,” the Mirwaiz, who was put under house arrest for the second consecutive Friday, said in a video message.

The separatist leader said “trust deficit” between the people of Kashmir and New Delhi “has widened, not shrunk”.

Muslim Welfare Association extends support to candidates committed to uplift marginalised communities

Jan 2, 2026

MUMBAI: In view of the forthcoming municipal elections in Maharashtra, the Muslim Welfare Association has said its policy and priorities are clear. The organisation's national Saleem Sarang, in a statement, stated that the Association will extend full support to those candidates who place fundamental issues such as education, reservation and protection and upliftment of Muslim, Bahujan and marginalised communities at the centre of their electoral agenda.

He said: "Education is the most powerful and effective means to bring society into the mainstream. Candidates who present concrete and result-oriented plans for quality education, youth's skill development and social empowerment will receive the active support of the Muslim Welfare Association."

Sarang further stated that the growing menace of substance abuse has emerged as a serious social challenge. Candidates who are committed to strengthening society through de-addiction initiatives, guiding youth towards the right path, rehabilitation programmes and public awareness efforts will be fully supported by the organisation.

Across all regions of Maharashtra, candidates who work in the interest of society—especially for the rights, safety and equal opportunities of Muslim, Bahujan and marginalised sections—will receive the support of the Association, he emphasized.

Sarang also informed that a list of such socially committed candidates to be supported by the organisation will be announced shortly.

BJP mouthpiece prints Muslim League editorial: Mix-up amuses Kerala; sparks political chatter

Jan 2, 2026

NEW DELHI: Subscribers of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) official mouthpiece in Kerala got an unexpected New Year’s surprise when they opened their newspaper on January 1.

In an embarrassing mix-up, Janmabhumi carried the editorial page of Chandrika, the daily run by the Indian Union Muslim League, in its Kannur–Kasaragod regional edition, while all other pages of the newspaper remained unchanged.

The error came to public attention after IUML state president Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal received a call from a party worker in Kannur informing him that his article had appeared in Janmabhumi.

Thangal initially brushed it off as a prank but later confirmed that the pro-BJP daily had indeed published his piece.

Alongside Thangal’s article, contributions by IUML leader MK Muneer were also printed on the editorial page. The page further carried an editorial titled ‘A left front in cumbles’. The mix-up was limited strictly to the editorial page, with the rest of the newspaper reflecting Janmabhumi’s regular content.

According to sources cited by local media, the incident occurred due to a technical lapse at the printing stage. Both Janmabhumi and Chandrika are reportedly printed at the same press, and the error affected only the Kannur and Kasaragod editions.

The unusual crossover quickly became a subject of discussion on social media, largely evoking amusement rather than outrage, given the stark ideological divide between the BJP and the IUML.

"While accusations of an unholy alliance between the UDF and BJP continue to swirl, the RSS mouthpiece Janmabhoomi has reproduced the editorial content originally published in Chandrika, the official newspaper of the IUML!" John Brittas, CPM MP, wrote on X.

Screenshot 2026-01-02 185536

Kerala chief minister’s press secretary PM Manoj joined the online commentary with a Facebook post, noting that mistakes were bound to happen when two newspapers were printed from the same press.

He added, however, that it was “surprising” that even a careful reading of the Chandrika editorial page published in Janmabhumi did not reveal “a single line” touching upon BJP politics.

"The editorial page of a newspaper reflects the views of that paper and of the political party that controls or influences it. What is striking here is that even though Chandrika’s editorial page appeared in Janmabhoomi, there is not a single line in that editorial which even remotely questions or critiques BJP politics. That leads to an obvious inference: Chandrika’s editorial line is something the BJP can fully accept without discomfort. Isn’t this what people mean when they talk about an underlying convergence or a shared current beneath the surface?" Manoj wrote on Facebook.

Islamic Jihad: Zionist Culture Minister’s remarks reflect racist colonial ideology

02 Jan 2026

The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine condemned statements by the so-called Israeli Minister of Culture, Miki Zohar, who claimed Israel’s right over Gaza and the occupied West Bank and described Palestinians as “guests.”

The movement said these remarks reflect a racist colonial ideology that ignores history and geography.

Islamic Jihad called Zohar’s comments a continuation of the old colonial myth that Palestine was a “land without a people,” and a desperate attempt to portray the occupiers as “owners” and the Palestinians as “guests.”

The movement affirmed that the Palestinian people’s decades-long resistance and sacrifices prove they are the legitimate owners of the land, while the settlers are temporary intruders. It warned that such statements fuel hatred, justify war crimes, support ongoing occupation and settlement expansion.

“We, the Palestinian people, are the rightful owners, and the occupation will eventually end,” the statement concluded.

Jordan: Israel's decision to withdraw authority from Hebron Municipality over Ibrahimi Mosque violates Intel law

02 Jan 2026

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan condemned on Friday Israel's decision to withdraw authority over the Ibrahimi Mosque from the Hebron Municipality in the occupied West Bank, asserting that this constitutes a violation of international law and international humanitarian law.

The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, in a statement carried by the official Jordanian news agency, Petra, said it condemns in the strongest terms Israel's decision, as the occupying power, to withdraw planning and construction authority over the Ibrahimi Mosque from the Hebron Municipality and to unilaterally approve a project to roof the mosque's courtyard.

The Ministry considered this a blatant violation of international law, international humanitarian law, and the existing historical and legal status quo.

The official spokesperson for the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Fouad Majali, affirmed the Kingdom's absolute rejection and strong condemnation of the continued illegal unilateral Israeli measures in the occupied West Bank, most recently those targeting the Ibrahimi Mosque/Cave of the Patriarchs.

These measures constitute a violation of international law, the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, and UN resolutions, particularly the 2017 UNESCO decision to inscribe the Old City of Hebron and the Ibrahimi Mosque/Cave of the Patriarchs on the List of World Heritage in Danger.

Majali called upon the international community to uphold its legal and moral responsibilities and compel Israel, the occupying power, to cease its illegal actions in the occupied Palestinian territory. He further urged the international community to protect the cultural and religious heritage of the Ibrahimi Mosque/Cave of the Patriarchs and preserve its outstanding universal value, which is threatened by Israeli actions.

Spain highlights importance of Gaza reconstruction

January 02, 2026

RAMALLAH: The Palestinian prime minister, Mohammed Mustafa, and the Spanish foreign minister, Jose Manuel Albares, on Friday discussed the latest developments in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

During their telephone conversation they emphasized the need to intensify international efforts to end the Israeli occupation and halt attacks and settler violence, and to secure the release of Palestinian funds held by Israeli authorities.

They affirmed the importance of ongoing efforts relating to plans for the reconstruction of Gaza, and Europe’s significant role in this process. Mustafa and Albares highlighted the need to unify Palestinian institutions in Gaza with those in the West Bank, with the aim of establishing a Palestinian state in line with international resolutions, including last year’s New York Declaration.

They also discussed coordination between their countries, and the strengthening of Spain’s political, diplomatic and financial support for Palestine, and Mustafa thanked Spain for its ongoing support.

Spain officially recognized Palestine as a state in May 2024, in a coordinated move alongside Ireland and Norway. Estephan Salameh, the Palestinian finance and planning minister, is set to visit Spain this month to discuss enhanced cooperation, particularly in the areas of development and reconstruction. Meanwhile, Israel continues operating in the occupied West Bank.

The Palestinian Prisoners media office said on Friday that Israel carried out numerous raids across the territory, including the major cities of Ramallah and Hebron, according to The Associated Press.

Nearly 50 people were detained, following the arrest of at least 50 other Palestinians on Thursday, most of those in the Ramallah area.

As 2026 begins, the shaky 12-week-old ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has largely ended large-scale Israeli bombardment of Gaza.

But Palestinians are still being killed by Israeli fire, especially along the so-called Yellow Line that delineates areas under Israeli control, and the humanitarian crisis is compounded by frequent winter rains and colder temperatures.

On Friday, American actor and film producer Angelina Jolie visited the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip.

The only crossing between the territory and a country other than Israel, it remains closed despite Palestinian requests to reopen it to people and aid.

Jolie met with members of the Red Crescent on the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing and then visited a hospital in the nearby city of Arish to speak with Palestinian patients on Friday, according to Egyptian officials.

Aid groups say not enough shelter materials are getting into Gaza during the truce.

West Bank communities come under attack from Israeli settlers

January 02, 2026

RAMALLAH: Israeli settlers launched a series of attacks on Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank on Friday, the Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

The assaults targeted homes, a mosque and agricultural land and were frequently accompanied or protected by Israeli troops, local sources were cited as saying.

In Khalayel Al-Lawz, southeast of Bethlehem, settlers threw stones at people’s homes and surrounded the area. In some cases, trees were uprooted and farmers were prevented from accessing their land.

Israeli forces provided protection for the attackers and in some cases threw stun grenades and tear gas canisters into properties, the report said. The military also later sealed off the area. In a separate attack in Al-Jiftlik, north of Jericho in the eastern West Bank, several members of the Ka’abneh family were assaulted by settlers, the report said.

Hassan Salem and Mousa Odeh Ka’abneh were later detained by Israeli forces, Eid Barahmeh, director of the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society in Jericho, said.

Israeli authorities also issued demolition orders for several homes in the village, claiming their owners lacked the appropriate building permits.

In an incident in Deir Ballut, Salfit district, settlers stormed Al-Salam Mosque, damaging its contents, and caused disruption by blocking roads into the town.

The attack reflected a growing pattern of violence in the area, where settlers have increasingly been targeting religious sites, the report said.

In Turmus Ayya, north of Ramallah, Israeli forces bulldozed agricultural land near the home of the Abu Awwad family and uprooted dozens of ancient olive trees.

Witnesses said the attacks had been going on for three months and that about 4,000 olive trees had been pulled up and hundreds of acres of land plowed to make way for a new Israeli outpost west of the town.

Palestinian authorities, human rights groups and international observers, including the UN, have reported a sharp increase in violence against Palestinian communities by settlers, often supported by Israeli troops.

UN force says Israel fired near peacekeepers in south Lebanon

January 02, 2026

BEIRUT: The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon said gunfire from an Israeli position hit close to its peacekeepers twice on Friday, reporting no casualties but decrying a “concerning trend.”

UNIFIL has repeatedly reported Israeli fire near or toward its personnel in recent months, and last week said an Israeli attack near one of its positions lightly wounded a peacekeeper.

Personnel patrolling in south Lebanon on Friday “reported 15 rounds of small arms fire that struck no more than 50 meters away from them,” a UNIFIL statement said.

Shortly afterwards, “peacekeepers in a second patrol in the same area reported approximately 100 rounds of machine-gun fire struck approximately 50 meters from them,” it added, reporting no damage or injuries.

“Peacekeepers assessed that the fire came from an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) position south of the Blue Line in both cases,” the statement said, referring to the de facto border, and “sent a ‘stop fire’ request through its liaison channels.”

It said UNIFIL had informed the Israeli army about the peacekeepers’ activities in advance.

“Incidents like these are happening on a too-regular basis, and becoming a concerning trend,” the statement said.

“We reiterate our call to the IDF to cease aggressive behavior and attacks on or near peacekeepers working for peace and stability along the Blue Line.”

UNIFIL has acted as a buffer between Israel and Lebanon for decades, and recently has been working with Lebanon’s army to support a year-old ceasefire between Israel and militant group Hezbollah.

The force on Friday noted that “attacks on or near peacekeepers are serious violations” of a 2006 UN Security Council resolution that formed the basis of the current ceasefire.

Under the November 2024 truce, Israel was to withdraw its forces from south Lebanon, but it has kept them at five areas it deems strategic and carries out regular strikes on Lebanon, usually saying it is targeting Hezbollah sites and operatives.

Under heavy US pressure and fears of expanded Israeli strikes, Lebanon has committed to disarming Hezbollah, starting in the south near the frontier.

Last August, the UN Security Council voted for the peacekeepers to leave Lebanon in 2027.

Israeli airstrikes pound areas north of Litani River as tensions with Hezbollah escalate

NAJIA HOUSSARI

January 02, 2026

BEIRUT: Israeli airstrikes on Friday hit several areas north of the Litani River, a day after Israel signaled it could resume its attacks on Hezbollah after claiming the Lebanese army was “not moving fast enough” and that the Iran-backed group was “rebuilding its military system.”

The raids struck multiple locations across the Iqlim Al-Tuffah region, the heights of Jabal Al-Rihane, and the towns of Mlikh and Aaramta in the Jezzine District, as well as the area around Qal’at Meiss between Ansar and Al-Zrariyah. Strikes on the Tabna area, on the outskirts of Al-Baisariyah in the Sidon–Zahrani district, cut the road linking nearby villages.

Airstrikes also hit the valley between Kafroue and Aazze in the Nabatieh District, the outskirts of Ain Al-Tineh, and Jabal Machghara in Western Bekaa, while Israeli warplanes flew at low altitude over the south, reaching the airspace of Baalbek, northern Bekaa, and the surrounding villages.

Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee claimed that Israel’s forces had targeted a “training compound” of the Radwan Force of Hezbollah allegedly used to conduct training for its members “in order to plan and carry out terrorist plots against army forces and the citizens of the state of Israel. The terrorist operatives were undergoing shooting training and qualification in the use of various combat means.”

Adraee added that the Israeli army struck “buildings and military facilities (used) for storing weapons” belonging to Hezbollah, and suggested that attacks were likely to continue.

Political writer Ali Al-Amin told Arab News: “The areas targeted by the Israeli airstrikes on Friday had previously been targeted repeatedly, but these areas are valleys and closed spaces belonging to the party, extending from the south to the Western Bekaa, and everyone knows that they contain bases and armament centers.”

Al-Amin added that Hezbollah “is currently living (in) an unprecedented moment of weakness. Iran, on the other hand, is facing a renewed predicament, confronting internal protests at a moment of external pullback, which means that whether Hezbollah hands over its weapons or does not hand them over, it is in a state of exposure at a time of a major imbalance.”

The end of 2025 marked the deadline Lebanon committed to for the state’s monopoly of arms south of the Litani River. On Jan. 8, its first session of the year, the Cabinet is expected to hear the Lebanese army’s report announcing the completion of its mission, preceding the second phase which covers the southern area up to the Awali River. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said the country remained committed to meeting the deadline.

An official political source confirmed to Arab News: “The army commander will present his report and the military institution will continue its mission. There will be no postponement.”

Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Naim Qassem said in a statement: “Hezbollah’s disarmament is a US-Israeli project targeting Lebanon and its sovereignty and independence, even if it is marketed under the banner of exclusive state control of arms.”

He added that the demand for control of weapons amid “continued Israeli attacks means that you are not working in Lebanon’s interest, but in Israel’s interest.”

On Thursday, following his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, US President Donald Trump said that Hezbollah “has been behaving badly” and “must be completely disarmed,” adding that “the Lebanese government is at a little bit of a disadvantage” with the group.

Asked whether Israel should strike Hezbollah in Lebanon due to the group’s refusal to disarm, Trump replied: “We’re going to see about that.”

Sirens sounded in Baram in Western Galilee in Israel on Friday morning, and a missile was launched toward a target in Upper Galilee, exploding in the north near the Lebanese towns of Maroun Al-Ras and Yaroun. Israeli Army Radio later reported that it had been a false alarm and the “suspect was a flock of birds.”

MSF calls Israeli ban a ‘grave blow’ to Gaza aid

January 02, 2026

JERUSALEM: International charity Doctors Without Borders Friday condemned a “grave blow to humanitarian aid” after Israel revoked the status it needs to operate in Gaza for refusing to share Palestinian staff lists.

Israel on Thursday confirmed it had banned access to the Gaza Strip to 37 foreign humanitarian organizations for refusing to share lists of their Palestinian employees.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF), which has 1,200 staff members in the Palestinian territories, the majority of them in Gaza, said in a statement that “denying medical assistance to civilians is unacceptable under any circumstances.”

The medical organization argued that it had “legitimate concerns” over new Israeli requirements for foreign NGO registration, specifically the disclosing of personal information about Palestinian staff.

It pointed to the fact that 15 MSF staff had been “killed by Israeli forces,” and that access to any given territory should not be conditional on staff list disclosure.

“Demanding staff lists as a condition for access to territory is an outrageous overreach,” the charity said.

MSF also denounced “the absence of any clarity about how such sensitive data will be used, stored, or shared,” charging that Israeli forces “have killed and wounded hundreds of thousands of civilians” in Gaza during the course of the war.

It also charged that Israel had “manufactured shortages of basic necessities by blocking and delaying the entry of essential goods, including medical supplies.”

Israel controls and regulates all entry points into Gaza, which is surrounded by a wall that began to be built in 2005.

Felipe Ribero, MSF head of mission in the Palestinian territories, told AFP that all of its operations were still ongoing in Gaza.

“We are supposed to leave under 60 days, but we don’t know whether it will be three or 60 days” before Israeli authorities force MSF to leave, he said.

Prominent humanitarian organizations hit by the Israeli ban include the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), World Vision International and Oxfam, according to an Israeli ministry list.

The ban, which came into effect on December 31, 2025 at midnight, has triggered widespread international condemnation.

Israel says the new regulation aims to prevent bodies it accuses of supporting terrorism from operating in the Palestinian territories.

MSF says it currently supports one in five hospital beds in Gaza and assists one in three mothers in the territory, and urged the Israeli authorities to meet to discuss the ban.

Zionist Settlers storm Mosque in West Salfit

02 Jan 2026

Zionist settlers stormed Al-Salam Mosque in Deir Ballut, west of Salfit in the occupied West Bank, on Friday, desecrating its sanctity and obstructing traffic.

The Palestinian Ministry of Endowments condemned the act, saying settlers entered the mosque with their shoes and took group photos inside, calling it “a deliberate attack on a holy site.”

The incident comes amid escalating settler attacks on Palestinian citizens and religious sites in Salfit. The ministry urged international and human rights bodies to protect places of worship and stop repeated assaults.

Saudi Arabia bans Sharia-violating names for public facilities under new rules

January 02, 2026

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia has issued new binding regulations governing the naming of public facilities across the Kingdom, introducing unified standards, governance frameworks, and clear religious and administrative restrictions, according to rules published in the Umm Al-Qura official Gazette.

The “Rules and standards for naming public facilities,” recently approved by the Saudi Cabinet, will come into force 120 days after publication and apply to all publicly owned facilities nationwide.

The regulations define public facilities broadly to include municipal, educational, cultural, sports, religious, health, transportation, and other government-owned assets.

Each government entity will be responsible for naming facilities within its jurisdiction in accordance with the new framework and relevant laws.

Under the rules, government entities must issue their own executive bylaws regulating the naming process. These bylaws must cover organizational, technical, procedural, and operational requirements, in addition to governance mechanisms overseeing naming decisions.

The regulations introduce strict prohibitions. Public facilities may not be named after Kings of Saudi Arabia, Crown Princes, or leaders of friendly or allied states without prior approval from the King.

Any names that contradict Islamic Sharia are explicitly banned.

The rules also restrict the use of the Names of God, permitting only seven names for public facilities: Al-Salam, Al-Adl, Al-Awwal, Al-Nur, Al-Haqq, Al-Shahid, and Al-Malik.

When facilities are named after individuals, authorities must verify the person’s integrity, including their intellectual orientation and criminal or security record, in coordination with relevant bodies.

The selected name must also be appropriate to the individual’s status and standing.

The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing will issue official naming categories after coordination with concerned authorities, and government entities must adhere to these classifications.

Final approval of facility names rests with the head of the relevant entity, who may delegate this authority if necessary.

The regulations allow numerical designations to be used in naming public facilities, either independently or alongside names.

To enhance coordination and consistency, each government entity must establish and maintain a comprehensive database of public facility names under its jurisdiction. These records must be updated regularly and shared annually with the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information.

The new framework repeals earlier provisions related to the naming of streets and squares contained in previous Cabinet decisions, along with any regulations that conflict with the updated rules.

The move forms part of broader efforts to modernize administrative practices, standardize public naming, and ensure alignment with religious principles, governance requirements, and national identity.

Saudi Arabia to host ‘dialogue’ between southern Yemeni factions

January 03, 2026

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry has invited factions in south Yemen to hold a dialogue in Riyadh to “discuss just solutions to the southern cause.”

The ministry statement said the conference in the Saudi capital had been requested by Rashad Al-Alimi, President of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, and the Kingdom urged all factions to participate “to develop a comprehensive vision” that would fulfill the aspirations of the southern people.

The separatist Southern Transitional Council has recently seized territory in the governorates of Hadramaut and Al-Mahra.

Saudi Arabia said the STC action poses a direct threat to the Kingdom’s national security, and regional stability.

Earlier this week, the military coalition supporting Yemen’s government carried out airstrikes targeting a shipment of weapons and vehicles destined for southern separatist forces. The shipment arrived in the port of Al-Mukalla on two vessels.

Saudi Arabia has reiterated the only way to bring the southern cause to a resolution is through dialogue.

Gulf and Arab countries on Tuesday offered their support for the internationally recognized government in Yemen.

Report: Low light pollution in Northern Borders is ideal for astronomers

RASHID HASSAN

January 02, 2026

RIYADH: The Kingdom’s Northern Borders, characterized by significantly lower levels of light pollution, is a prime destination for astronomical observation, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Friday.

The SPA quoted from a recent report from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite which is circling in space.

The VIIRS is a whiskbroom scanner radiometer that collects imagery and radiometric measurements of land, atmosphere, cryosphere, and oceans in the visible and infrared bands of the electromagnetic spectrum.

This lower level of light pollution, according to the VIIRS, is found in the open areas surrounding Turaif, east of Rafha, and west of the city of Arar.

The Bortle Scale, which measures night-sky brightness, shows readings allowing the Milky Way to be seen with the naked eye on clear nights.

“The vast desert horizon and the scarcity of tall buildings contribute to improved astronomical observation conditions by minimizing ambient light and enhancing viewing quality,” the SPA reported.

“This allows celestial phenomena, such as meteor showers and planetary conjunctions, to be observed with greater precision.”

The report added: “Due to these factors, the region is an ideal destination for amateur astrophotographers and astrophysicists seeking a dark, expansive sky that enables them to observe celestial objects with greater clarity.”

Recently a striking astronomical and optical phenomenon was observed in the Northern Borders, as light pillars appeared in the sky, drawing the attention of locals and enthusiasts of natural phenomena.

A light pillar is an optical phenomenon that occurs in the atmosphere as a vertical column extending above or below its source. This effect is caused by the reflection of light on tiny ice crystals suspended in clouds or the air.

Abouazza El-Mhamdi, an associate professor in the physics and astronomy department at King Saud University, told Arab News at that it was a “rare meteorological event — the vibrant light pillars that illuminated the night sky, was crucial for astronomy and astro tourism in the region.”

“Although these pillars are common in Arctic climates like Canada or Russia, their appearance in the Northern Border region is a remarkable anomaly, highlighting the unique and intense winter conditions affecting the Kingdom’s northern reaches,” said El-Mhamdi.

Fragrance artisans weave heritage into Jazan Festival experience

January 02, 2026

Riyadh: Perfumes are emerging as living connections to ancestral memory at the Jazan Festival 2026, which opened on Friday, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

A narrative rooted in botanical origins is unfolding as veteran craftswomen showcase decades of accumulated wisdom, transforming the contents of native plants into small vessels that distill the human bond with terrain.

Aromas wafting through the space suggest imagery of regional ecosystems — fragrant vegetation cultivated across highland and lowland zones, harvested during optimal periods, then subjected to extended drying and distillation processes before materializing as perfumes and essences embodying geographical character, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Arranged fragrance containers resemble nature’s output, composed by skilled practitioners versed in harvest timing, plant dormancy requirements and scent extraction methods, yielding products preserving organic integrity and territorial identity.

Craftswoman Fatima bint Mohammed Al-Faifi has dedicated two decades to perfume production, characterizing regional practice as social custom interwoven throughout daily existence — deployed in guest reception, featured at celebrations, accompanying community gathering — elevating scent to cultural signature, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Festival attendees are discovering aromatic botanicals, absorbing production methodology explanations and discerning nuanced olfactory distinctions, demonstrating how craftsmanship blends persistence with expertise, tradition with innovation.

Perfume artisan involvement aligns with Jazan Festival’s initiative repositioning traditional crafts as dynamic, evolving culture while spotlighting women’s contributions safeguarding regional inheritance and expressing this through modern methods, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Al-Manshiyah carnival in AlUla invites families to enjoy winter weather

JASMINE BAGER

January 02, 2026

ALULA: As part of the Winter at Tantora festival, which runs until Jan. 10, families in AlUla can enjoy moonlit fun at the Al-Manshiyah Plaza Winter Carnival.

The open-air celebration welcomes visitors of all ages with games, mini parades, live concerts and hands-on workshops, including hat-making and wool crafts. Guests can also browse and purchase handmade goods from local vendors.

Open on weekends from 6 p.m. until midnight for the duration of the festival, the carnival blends AlUla’s rich heritage with contemporary entertainment.

Arab News spoke to Yorgo Saade, a Lebanese national who has lived in AlUla for the past five years and is manager of Lapain Coffee & Bakery.

On the night of the visit, Saade was serving hot drinks and cakes, sharing his trademark energy as a chilly breeze swept through the plaza.

He told Arab News: “Because it’s winter season now, we have winter drinks — hot chocolate, and we have French hazelnut. In Saudi Arabia, people (also) love the hot coffee of the day.

“This is a great carnival. All the families come here for amusement because there is a clown, entertainment, music, and everything. There’s a lot of seating areas.”

Saade is impressed by the historic and geographic significance of the event.

He added: “This park is next to an old, ancient train station, which is no longer in operation. It’s a heritage area  — as you can see with all the old houses.”

The nearby train station, built in the early 20th century, now stands abandoned. It once formed part of the Hejaz Railway, which briefly connected AlUla to a vast regional network of pilgrimage, trade and empire.

Although its use was short-lived, the railway marked AlUla’s first encounter with large-scale modern transportation and industrial architecture.

Decades later, Al-Manshiyah Plaza emerged as the area’s social and administrative center, as residents moved from the Old Town into organized neighborhoods.

While the railway symbolized movement through AlUla, the plaza came to represent the life within it — schools, services, markets and everyday gatherings that shaped a settled community.

Today, Al-Manshiyah Plaza’s atmosphere helps to keep families engaged with activities, and snacks are available throughout the evening.

No ticket is required to enter, and free parking is available. The site is wheelchair accessible, although visitors are advised that the festivities offered include loud noises and flashing lights.

Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

For Saade, the carnival has breathed new life into the historic space, and he added: “There’s a lot of food corners here. As you can see, there’s a lot of children and this is an ancient area. It’s new and old — with food.”

SEC strengthens infrastructure readiness for Aramco Stadium ahead of World Cup

January 02, 2026

RIYADH: Saudi Electricity Company has announced the completion of a power transmission station for Aramco Stadium in Alkhobar, the Saudi Press Agency has reported.

The step provides a pivotal role in enabling energy infrastructure for major national projects and supporting the readiness of vital facilities to host international events.

The project was implemented by the National Grid Company, the operational arm of Saudi Arabia’s electricity transmission system, under the supervision of the Saudi Electricity Project Development Company and within an integrated framework that meets the highest standards of reliability and operational sustainability.

The project contributes to enhancing the stability and efficiency of the stadium’s electrical supply, ensuring its operational readiness during sporting events and peak times. This aligns with national efforts to improve readiness as the Kingdom progresses its preparations to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

Work has included the construction of a 115/13.8 kilovolt substation and its connection to the electrical grid via more than 2.4 km of underground cables.

The project has also incorporated advanced protection and operational systems, including Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, and communications technologies, to enhance supply reliability and ensure service continuity, in line with international best practices.

The company said that the project was completed within an 18-month timeframe in accordance with approved technical and regulatory requirements, with national engineering and technical teams participating in all phases from design to operational testing, underscoring the Kingdom’s expanding capabilities in power transmission.

According to the SPA, the project’s completion reflects Saudi Electricity Company’s commitment to developing the power transmission system, supporting the operation of sports and service facilities, and enhancing infrastructure readiness in the Eastern Province.

This aligns with the Kingdom’s long-term objectives and its vision to host world-class events to the highest standard.

'Simple acts for the country we love' - Muslims welcome New Year with major street clean-up

Sebastian McCormick

2 JAN 2026

A Muslim group have been cleaning up the streets of South Yorkshire while donating hot food to the homeless.

Volunteers from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) have been carrying out street cleanings across Yorkshire to celebrate the start of the New Year. Muslim youths from seven AMYA Yorkshire branches took part in the 'New Year's Day Street Clean', which has become a tradition over the decades.

The volunteers headed out as early as 5am, and took part in the clean-up in Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Spen Valley, Scunthorpe, and Huddersfield.

AMYA said: "The clean-up reflects a core Islamic principle of service to humanity and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s long-standing motto, "Love for All, Hatred for None". Whatever the weather, the commitment of these young volunteers remains unwavering, driven by a genuine desire to make a positive difference.

"Each year, members of the public and local authorities express their appreciation for the early-morning efforts, which help reduce pressure on council services after one of the busiest nights of the year. Above all, the initiative highlights the power of community spirit and the impact of simple acts of service for the country we love."

In a Hindu-Christian city, a Muslim family lights a lamp for Shabbat

2 January 2026

“Hope is not a naive ignorance of the world,” the author Rebecca Solnit wrote “Far from it. It is a feeling that moves us away from easy despair, to act courageously with hopeful action.”

Acting courageously with hopeful action is what drives us at openDemocracy. Every story we write, every abuse we uncover, every scandal we expose, is done with courage and a belief that this same courage can lead to action. To change.

It’s why openDemocracy aims to be a media for progressive movements, for whom hope offers the energy to build a fairer, more equal world.

In that spirit, the first edition of The Weekly in 2026 dedicated to hope. Our journalists from around the world  have put together their hopes for the year. Hopes for peace, finding hope in the simple joys, and hopes for small, grassroots social movements triumphing over big enemies. Make sure you read through to the end for a heart warming story of an unlikely inter-religious, intergenerational friendship,

I want to hear from you, too. What gives you hope? What are you hoping to see in 2026? What are you hoping to see from us in 2026? And, in these – let’s face it – dark times, what do you do to restore your hope?

January is a time when our bank balances can feel quite strained. But if you are able to share a few pounds this new year to support our team to do even more investigative journalism with courage and hopeful action, we would really appreciate it.

Our hopes for 2026

All My People Right Here Right Now

2025 was a tough year. Heartbreaking global conflicts dominated my news feeds. The hypocrisy and silence surrounding these were deafening and the helplessness in being able to do anything about them was all-consuming. In the UK, the passive aggression of the St George flags lining the streets of my town, visibly and silently told me that I am not welcome here. I found myself questioning my identity as someone who is both a British citizen and an immigrant to the UK, and my place in the country I have called home and in which I have built my life for over 30 years.

Yet, some moments have given me hope. The Oasis reunion gig I went to, brought together a group of friends from decades ago and flooded Wembley stadium with pure joy and love. Spending time in parts of the country (Cambridge, Hove) where people were genuinely happy in diversity, reminded me of why I have loved living here for so long. My mixed-race son, skipping from door to door in our neighbourhood as we delivered leaflets about hope and unity, grounded me in the fight for a better future. 2026 may be another tough year, but I will continue to look for reasons like these that spread hope.

Rudaba Osmani-Edwards, Development Director

A Fresh Chance for Nigeria’s  Ogoni People

I am hopeful for the people of Ogoni, of Nigeria’s oil-rich Delta.

Between the late 1960s and early 90s, the Ogonis suffered extraordinary environmental degradation on account of the oil exploration by Shell. Livelihoods disappeared. Life expectancy shortened. People died. Through their valiant advocacy and resistance, through the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People they were able to ground Shell’s operations. They paid dearly for it too, their leader Ken Saro Wiwa and eight other activists were killed after what is regarded as a sham trial. Their demands for inclusion in oil production, cleaned up lands, haven't been met.

Now, 30 years later, the Nigerian government (alongside oil interests) are trying to return to Ogoni and explore oil again.

I am hopeful for the Ogoni this time around because this time they are in the driver's seat to see their dreams fulfilled. Whereas decades ago, they were a smaller people, with less resources to resist (even though they still recorded some unprecedented wins), these days they are better positioned. They have the world’s attention, they are well versed in the fight for ecological rights, they may not be as easily manipulated and divided as they were before. They are in a pole position, to force the Nigerian government to give them what they have been asking for for the last 50 years and because of which Ken Saro Wiwa died. Should they succeed it would be a rare real life triumph of David against Goliath.

Ayodeji Rotinwa, openDemocracy’s Africa editor

The Zohran Effect

After Mamdani’s strong campaign rooted in hope helped to secure his victory in New York’s mayoral elections, I hope that his win will inject a new energy into left-wing politics in the US that will hopefully influence the next presidential election. I'm hoping that what he achieves in the first full year of his mayorship will serve as an example for what the rest of the US could one day have.

Carla Abreu, audience engagement manager

Hopes for a Just Peace

Last year, I travelled to eastern Ukraine for the third time since the start of the full-scale invasion. It’s hard work: Kharkiv is so badly shelled and under almost constant attack. And yet, every time I visit, I am inspired to hope. That hope is due to the courage of the Ukrainian people. From rescue workers to soldiers and human rights activists – as well as the victims of war – the Ukrainians I meet share an ambition to build a fairer country and to resist the far right authoritarianism Russia is determined to impose on them. Unsurprisingly, my hope for 2026 is for a fair and just peace for Ukraine, one that does not compromise on the safety and security of all its population, and one that creates a more equal and resilient society. It’s a hope I know that everyone fighting for Ukraine’s future shares.

Sian Norris, senior investigations reporter.

Creative Resistance

When I first read about Trump sending migrants to Guantánamo one week into his second term, I couldn’t help thinking about time being a circle. One week after his first inauguration I was in Guantánamo reporting for a book and asking questions about Trump’s campaign promises to fill again the Bush’s illegal military prison with suspects of terrorism and to bring back torture.

A decade before the war on terror, Guantánamo had been the place to detain Haitian and Cuban refugees and even people with HIV. Now, with Trump reigning unchecked, Guantánamo-like practices are once again on full display. Migrants are hunted across the US, brutally detained, deported to third countries without due process, locked in prisons where torture and mistreatment are routine (El Salvador), or sent back to authoritarian regimes which they had fled from in the first place (Venezuela). Elected officials praise these policies and show eagerness to replicate them in their countries (Chile). It feels like we’re heading to a time where Guantánamo will be the norm, instead of the ugly exception.

So my hope for 2026 stands with the people figuring out how to resist and fight back. This year, I met some of those people: the neighbours setting up chats to share information and warn families about impending raids, buying foods and medicines for those who stay at home out of fear of being detained, bringing shelter and legal assistance to migrant families, and waging legal battles in courts. Often, when talking to me, these people would break down in tears. But they got bolder when explaining the creative ways they’re finding to resist.

My hope is big. I hope Latin Americans will also push to keep this authoritarian wave in check, find strength in their long-acquired wisdom, mobilise in support of the persecuted and will, ultimately, defeat the Guantánamo style once and for all.

Diana Cariboni, Latin America editor

A tech-critical populist future

The tariffs, threats, and strategic posture of the US will continue to destabilise the globe, including for supposed allies like us in Europe. While it won’t be easy, 2026 must involve vigorous remediation. Digital sovereignty is one area requiring urgent attention, in order to wean ourselves away from US firms who it’s feared may even cut off international judges at a whim.

Optimistically, that could involve steps to move beyond the poisoned landscapes of big tech – with initiatives like the Euro Stack to offer Google Suite style utilities from trusted partners.

Furthermore, there’s hope we may recognise social media as a health and national security threat that needs to be dealt with directly, as the US does TikTok and Australia does all platforms for young people. We must take the opportunity to regain control of how platforms control public information diets. This is all the more critical as AI supercharges misinformation.

Cory Doctorow suggests this is also the time to repeal legislation that stops us from tinkering with devices we own – so-called anti-circumvention laws, that prohibit users fixing or enhancing their own property to suit US corporations. Allowing this could bring enormous economic benefits to those who can then innovate outside of monopoly strangleholds.

There is a growing awareness amongst the wider population that big US firms wield too much power and cause too much harm.

Anti-establishment voices could seize ground from immigrant-bashing politicians with calls like “stop AI taking our jobs and big tech taking our children”. Tech-critical populism can find a balance between protecting critical digital infrastructure, supporting local innovation, and reining in megacorps that are a risk to the social fabric.

Matthew Linares, Technical and publishing manager

Persistence is Resistance

Covering South America in 2025 has often meant confronting what happens when the state looks away from suffering – and who is left to absorb the consequences. My reporting has focused on painful truths: the enduring legacy of gender-based violence, the social damage inflicted by political decisions, and the neglect that leaves the most vulnerable unprotected.

And yet, what has stayed with me most this year is not the scale of that neglect – inseparable from broader democratic strain – but the persistence of those who refuse to accept it. For every institution that fails, there are people who refuse to be ignored. Here, hope does not come in grand promises, but in local organising: sustained efforts to demand justice, care for others, and insist on accountability.

My hope for the year ahead is rooted in that persistence. South America reminds us that democracy is not something you inherit and keep, but something people repeatedly fight to defend. That fight is far from over, but it is very much alive.

Angelina de los Santos, Latin America reporter

We are united by our humanity

Last week, on 24 December, a young man and his family gathered in an embroidery shop in Fort Kochi, southern India, to light the menorah for the eighth and final time that Hanukkah — just as they do every year. The man isn’t Jewish, though; there is reportedly only one Jew left in the Keralan city’s Jew Town neighbourhood.

When we met the following day, a chance encounter as I wandered aimlessly around Kochi, the man told me the story of how his Muslim father, Thaha Ibrahim, became the surrogate son of Sarah Cohen, an Indian Jewish woman who passed away in 2019, days before her 97th birthday.

Thaha met “Sarah aunty” and her husband, “Jacob uncle”, in the 1980s, when he was a teenager selling postcards to tourists on the streets outside their home. They offered him storage space, and he went on to forge a close bond with the couple, eventually helping Sarah to open an embroidery shop selling kippahs, challah covers and handkerchiefs from her living room.

Shortly before he died in 1999, Jacob asked Thaha to take care of Sarah. For 30 years, his son told me, the two were nearly inseparable, with Thaha visiting Sarah daily and eventually taking over the running of the shop when she could no longer manage.

Over the decades, they celebrated countless Muslim and Jewish festivals together. When Sarah’s health declined, Thaha moved his family to be closer to her, and when she eventually passed away, she left the shop to him. Six years later, he and his family still run it exactly as she did – with the addition of a small museum remembering Sarah’s life that they’ve built in the side room.

It can often feel like we are more divided today than ever before. Conflict rages across much of the world, not least in Gaza, where the Israeli genocide entered its third year in 2025. To hear Sarah and Thaha’s story brought me to tears, and also gave me such hope.

In a predominantly Hindu and Christian city in the south of India, a Muslim family meets every Friday evening to light a lamp for the Shabbat. There is far more that unites us than divides us, and I am grateful to have had a reminder of that.

Hartlepool Muslim community marks New Year with neighbourhood clean up

By Mark Payne

2 Jan 2026

Members of Hartlepool’s mosque started the New Year with an annual community clean up.

Over 75 men, women and children attended the Nasir Mosque, in Brougham Terrace, for pre-dawn prayers to see in the New Year.

Mosque elders made breakfast whilst the youngsters picked up rubbish in the surrounding area with their annual Community Clean Up.

Eeqan Khan, youth leader for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, said: “This is a reflection of the true spirit of Islam, through prayer, service and positive action, we serve humanity for the sake of the One God.”

Over the holidays, groups of mosque elders, young men and women visited various care homes in Hartlepool meeting residents, exchanging gifts and sharing messages of peace.

Tahir Selby, Imam of the Nasir Mosque, said: “It was lovely to see so many people coming to the mosque for the pre-dawn prayers, especially the young children and then for them to be able to go out and clean the streets.

"Cleanliness is part of our faith and we want to instill this into the youth, who are our future.

"We hope that we can continue serving the lovely people of Hartlepool in this New Year and pray that everyone has a peaceful and joyous New Year.”

Throughout the year, the local Muslim community has continued to prepare and serve up meals for people in need through their work with St Aidan’s Church and Dyke House’s The Annexe centre

Over 37,500 meals and other food have been given out since the start of the service during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mosque's 'shock' at viral pilates class video

3 Jan 2026

Cathy Minton

Leaders at a mosque in Bradford have said they are "shocked" that a video of their men's pilates class has received more than two million views on social media.

Jamia Usmania Mosque on Heaton Road hosts the classes aimed at men over 50 every Thursday.

Mohammed Ilyas, secretary at the mosque, said they had launched the sessions to try and improve the health and wellbeing of older men and hoped to introduce sessions for women in the future.

The classes have proved so popular that the mosque has had to limit the numbers of men taking part due to space.

Mr Ilyas said he had been amazed at the response online.

"We are shocked to be honest, it's gone worldwide, we've had nearly two million views on TikTok and a lot of views on Faceboook."

He said they had comments from across the world about the video, with people asking how they can run similar classes in their own mosques.

"I personally had a lot of calls asking to hold these classes across England in a number of mosques," he added.

Zara Kayani leads the classes and said he was passionate about delivering health improvements for the men participating.

"Younger men are more into body-building, body image, but as the men grow older there's less opportunity for them," he said.

He said he believed the classes helped to improve flexibility, and that they had both mental and spiritual benefits.

"It's an opportunity for men to come together, have a laugh," he said.

He said he had no idea why the video of the class had found a large audience, but admitted the classes had proved popular.

"We've done no publicity, it's just word of mouth.

"We've seen the classes grow from seven to 20 to 25, so we're having to limit some of the classes because the numbers are growing day by day."

Those attending the classes clearly find it beneficial.

Abid Khan began to attend after he had a heart transplant in June 2024

"It's helped me a lot both physically and emotionally," the 62-year-old said.

"I've met new people and some are now my best friends. I really enjoy it."

Habib Rehman, 60, said he was amazed the video of their class had done so well.

He said he suffered from sciatica and lower back pain and had been "looking for something to do".

"This is helping and also you meet people and socialise as well."

Mr Ilyas said the fact the sessions were sociable was an important part of what they had hoped to achieve.

"The instructor gets everyone involved into the class and after class they are all having a cup of tea, having some fruits and biscuits.

"They are enjoying the session away from being sat at home in front of the telly.

"That one hour of exercise goes a long way."

Mr Ilyas said it was also about making the mosque the centre of the community.

"Mosques are mainly used for prayers and we want to be more inclusive and we want the mosque to be a community hub."

He said they were currently developing a new building nearby which would enable them to do more including offering women's classes.

Russian military denies ‘missile attack’ on Kharkov

2 Jan, 2026

The Russian Defense Ministry has rejected Kiev’s accusations that it launched a missile strike on Ukraine’s second-largest city Kharkov.

It called the reported incident an attempt to distract attention from its own deadly New Year’s Eve terrorist attack on Russian civilians.

Kiev claimed that at least two missiles hit a residential neighborhood in Kharkov on Friday, completely destroying an apartment building and injuring at least 19 people.

Ukrainian media released graphic footage of the aftermath, and Vladimir Zelensky immediately accused Moscow of seeking to disrupt peace talks.

However, initial videos from the scene indicated that smoke was already billowing from a building in the area before a large detonation was heard, and the footage neither features an air raid siren nor the noise of an approaching missile or drone.

“The Russian Armed Forces did not plan or launch any attacks using missiles or aviation weapons within the city of Kharkov,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement late Friday.

“Based on eyewitness videos published by Ukrainian information resources, the epicenter of the explosion was located in the Persona shopping center… In the published video footage, heavy smoke of unknown origin was recorded in the building a few seconds before the explosion, which indicates a high probability of detonation of the ammunition stored there by the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” it added.

Kiev’s claims are intended to “distract the attention of the international community from the brutal terrorist attack committed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the night of January 1,” it added.

Shortly before midnight on New Year’s Eve, Ukrainian UAVs hit a cafe and hotel in the village of Khorly in Russia’s Kherson Region where about a hundred people were gathered for celebrations, setting it on fire. At least 27 civilians, including two minors, were killed and 31 others were injured in the attack.

Earlier on Friday, the Russian military announced it has conducted one large-scale attack and six group strikes inside Ukraine over the past week in response to Kiev’s “terrorist attacks on civilian targets in Russia.”

High-precision munitions, including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, were utilized during the strikes. The targets included production facilities for long-range drones, as well as transportation and port infrastructure used by Kiev’s forces, arms and fuel depots, and temporary deployment sites of Ukrainian military units and foreign mercenaries, the ministry said.

On December 28-29, Kiev launched 91 long-range UAVs at the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Novgorod Region. Moscow has condemned the attack as an act of “state terrorism,” saying that the raid was not only aimed at Putin, but also against US President Donald Trump’s “efforts to facilitate a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict.”

Zelensky taps close ally as new defense minister

2 Jan, 2026

Vladimir Zelensky has offered Ukraine’s IT czar, his trusted ally Mikhail Fedorov, the position of Minister of Defense. The move comes as the country continues to grapple with a series of high-profile corruption allegations that have shaken the government.

In a video address Friday night, Zelensky praised outgoing Defense Minister Denis Shmygal for “solid results” and stated he would remain part of the government team, though the details of his new role were not immediately available.

Shmygal, who took the role after serving as Ukraine's prime minister for five years, lasted less than six months in the post.

“I have also decided to change the working format of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine… Mikhail is deeply involved in the issues related to the ‘drone line’ and works very effectively on digitalizing public services and processes,” Zelensky said, touting Fedorov’s expertise in technology and drone warfare as “crucial” to bolstering Kiev’s warfighting capabilities.

Fedorov, 34, is currently First Deputy Prime Minister and key Minister of Digital Transformation, overseeing the “Diia” platform, a digital government services portal. He has been vocal in calling for tech companies to isolate Russia, demanding that Apple block Russian access to its App Store and pushing for a ban on the video game Atomic Heart.

The proposed appointment is the latest in a wave of personnel changes following the resignation of Andrey Yermak, Zelensky’s long-time chief of staff, in late November.

Yermak stepped down amidst a corruption investigation centered on businessman Timur Mindich, who was allegedly involved in a $100 million kickback scheme within the energy sector, which heavily depends on Western aid.

The broader scandal has implicated several high-ranking officials, including at least five serving MPs, Justice Minister German Galushchenko and Energy Minister Svetlana Grinchuk, as well as executives at the state-owned nuclear company Energoatom.

Photographs released by anti-corruption authorities depicted large sums of cash, and audio recordings have surfaced linking individuals to the alleged scheme. Several have been charged, and the investigation is ongoing.

Zelensky also announced Friday that Kirill Budanov, head of Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR), will become his new chief of staff, replacing Yermak.

Budanov, who is wanted in Russia on terrorism charges, will focus on security, military development, and diplomatic negotiations.

Russia responds to ‘terrorist attacks’ by Kiev – MOD

2 Jan, 2026

The Russian military has conducted one large-scale and six group strikes against drone production facilities, energy infrastructure, and other military-related targets inside Ukraine over the past week, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said.

The bombardment was in response to “Ukraine’s terrorist attacks on civilian targets in Russia,” the ministry said in a statement on Friday.

High-precision munitions, including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, were utilized during the strikes, it added.

The targets of the Russian attacks included production facilities for Ukrainian long-range drones and the sites from where they are being launched, the statement read.

Other enterprises of the country’s defense industrial complex and the energy infrastructure that powers them were hit as well, it said.

The attacks were also aimed at transportation and port infrastructure used by Kiev’s forces, arms and fuel depots, and temporary deployment sites of Ukrainian military units and foreign mercenaries, according to the ministry.

On December 28-29, Kiev launched 91 long-range UAVs at the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Novgorod Region. All of the drones were shot down by air defenses.

Moscow has condemned the attack as an act of “state terrorism” and promised a response. The Kremlin also said that the Ukrainian drone raid was not only aimed at Putin, but also “against [US] President [Donald] Trump’s efforts to facilitate a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict.”

Shortly before midnight on Wednesday, Ukrainian UAVs hit a cafe and hotel in the village of Khorly in Russia’s Kherson Region where some hundred people were gathered for New Year’s Eve celebrations. At least 27 civilians, including two minors, were killed and 31 others injured in the strike and the blaze that it caused.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on Friday that 26 Ukrainian long-range drones had been destroyed on approach to the capital overnight.

The incursions followed another attempted attack on Moscow that took place the previous night, just as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s traditional New Year’s Eve broadcast had begun.

Two bodies pulled from sea as search continues

3 Jan, 2026

Two people have been recovered from the sea off the east Yorkshire coast, including a 67-year-old man who later died at the scene, police say.

Humberside Police did not provide the gender or age of the second body they recovered in Withernsea, but said the circumstances are not suspicious and searches continue for one more person who entered the water.

HM Coastguard had earlier said it was searching for two people after initially responding to reports of a "number of people in difficulty in the water".

The incident was reported at 15:10 GMT, resulting in a major search involving a rescue helicopter, air ambulance and RNLI crews from Withernsea, Bridlington and Hornsea Inshore Rescue.

The 67-year-old unconscious man was pulled from the water at the central promenade in Withernsea, and despite the efforts of paramedics died at the scene.

A police spokesperson said the circumstances around the man's death were not thought to be suspicious.

"Residents will continue to see an increased police presence in and around the area as the search continues," they said.

"We continue to ask that people avoid the area to allow emergency services to work efficiently and safely."

The search was paused at about 00:30 on Saturday morning, with it set to continue at first light.

Hornsea Inshore Rescue earlier said it had faced "horrendous conditions" and there had been 9.8ft (3m) waves.

A large cordon that was in place has been lifted and the operation involved about 100 members of the emergency services, including Yorkshire Ambulance and Humberside Fire and Rescue.

BBC reporter Danny Savage at the scene said it was a high tide and the light had faded fast.

He said: "It's freezing with the windchill factor and it would not get light until much later in the morning at this time of year."

Corrie and Emmerdale collide for first time in explosive crossover episode

3 Jan, 2026

Ian Youngs

The worlds of TV soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale will collide - literally - in an explosive crossover episode on Monday, kicking off a revamped but reduced schedule for the shows.

Characters from both soaps will come face-to-face for the first time in the one-off Corriedale, which executive producer Iain Macleod jokes is "like the Marvel multiverse assembling".

When Macleod took over both long-running shows two years ago, he started thinking about mixing the ITV soap universes, perhaps by sending a character or two on holiday across the Pennines.

"And then gradually you think, if you're going to do it, why not go huge? Which is what we've elected to do," he says.

In soap terms, "going huge" means staging a spectacular and slightly preposterous stunt in an attempt to grab viewers' attention.

And so, on a dark road on a winter's night somewhere between Coronation Street's Manchester setting and Emmerdale's West Yorkshire home, circumstances conspire to bring characters from both camps together. At high speed.

"First and foremost, as a soap fan, it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these two worlds collide," Macleod continues. "It's so exciting.

"I think fans of both shows will enjoy the opportunity, just for this hour, to see what's it like if your favourite character from over here interacts with your favourite character from over there."

The meeting of the TV tribes had to happen on neutral territory, and Macleod says he got the idea for the storyline from his own journeys back and forth between Manchester and Leeds.

"Anyone that's had the misfortune of making that journey with any frequency will know it's fraught with delays and accidents and road closures and extreme weather events," he says.

"So partly it was inspired by my loathing of that commute and having spent a long time embroiled in some kind of chaos on that transpennine arterial connection between the two cities that host our soaps.

"I was thinking, hmm, I wonder if I can turn my traumatic work journeys into something creative."

For the actors, filming the special was a chance to get to know their counterparts.

"We had a lot of time to spend together," says Joe-Warren Plant, who plays Emmerdale's Jacob Gallagher. "There were three weeks of night shoots, and that was quite intense for the cast and the crew.

"We had a lot of time off set as well whilst we were waiting for the big set-ups and explosions. So we were hanging out in each other's dressing rooms, in the trailers, and just having a lot of fun."

There was "a little bit of competitive rivalry" during the build-up, he says, "but then as soon as we got on set, all of that went away".

"There's never, like, beef - but you obviously want to fly the flag for your side. But it's been absolutely amazing. Everybody from Corrie has been so warm and welcoming."

The all-action one-hour episode required 14 all-night filming sessions.

"They were really quite pleasant considering we were working from six at night till six in the morning," insists Julia Goulding, aka the pregnant Shona Platt from Coronation Street.

"It was a really big team effort. It was great being with the Emmerdale lot. I had actually had a really nice time."

Shona encounters trouble en route from the wedding of Corrie's Debbie and Ronnie, and the only downside to the night shoots was spending so long in a pregnancy suit and the same dress, Goulding says.

"I had a frock on because I was coming back from the wedding. So it was a bit uncomfortable.

"There were other people in trainers and jeans, but I was there in my sparkly boots and my frock with my pregnancy bump."

A few actors have tasted life on both sides of the soap divide.

They include Chris Bisson, who played Vikram Desai in Coronation Street from 1999 to 2002, and has been Jai Sharma in Emmerdale since 2009.

That caused a conundrum for producers when the two shows came together.

"I was thrilled to be part of this," Bisson says. "I knew there was potentially a bit of an issue with me having played a character in both the soaps.

"I phoned the boss and said, 'Please, let me be in it! The punters need to see Steve McDonald think he saw Vikram!'"

Soap power hour

The two soaps will go their separate ways again after Corriedale in what ITV is calling a soap "power hour", with Emmerdale at 8pm followed by Corrie at 8.30pm every weeknight (and both available to stream from 7am on ITVX).

"We're setting a new routine, and actually I think it's better for the soaps," Bisson believes.

"I think we can get back to telling stories in the way that we used to tell them, because we've been forced into always trying to do a special double episode on a Thursday. But, of course, we did it every Thursday, so it wasn't special any more.

"So let's just play the genre in the way that people want the genre played, which is telling great stories, relevant stories, and it retains itself as the modern repertory theatre."

Corriedale is the latest attempt to shore up the shows after years of declining ratings, according to the Sun's soaps editor Carl Greenwood.

"They want to relaunch the shows at between 8 and 9pm and they needed a big bang to do it, because the soaps have lost millions and millions of viewers over the last few years," he says.

Corrie got about 4.3 million viewers per episode and Emmerdale attracted 3.8 million in 2025 - both down by about a third over the past 10 years.

And after increasing their episode numbers over the decades, the soaps are now being scaled back for the first time. Corrie and Emmerdale will be on air for five hours per week in total instead of six.

"I think it was inevitable. There was no way they could sustain the hours that they were putting out in the episodes with the declining viewers," Greenwood says.

They're not the only soaps to have been trimmed - Hollyoaks and Casualty have also reduced their episode counts, while Doctors and Neighbours have bitten the dust completely.

"I don't think we're going to see soaps gone," Greenwood adds. "But I don't think we're going to see as much of them going forward."

'Difficult times'

The airtime has been reduced mainly because daily half-hour-episodes have the benefit of being in a reliable slot, and are in "a more consumable length and format", Macleod says.

It will also have "a really positive effect on the way we tell stories", he explains. "It'll allow them to be a little bit pacier. The plot points can move on more quickly day-to-day, rather than having to play it over an hour."

The budgets have been cut, though - but ITV hasn't said how much by.

More than 70 staff and crew jobs have been lost, almost all through voluntary redundancies, Macleod says, meaning there have been some "difficult times" behind the scenes.

"We've lost a lot of very long-standing members of staff. It's been a tricky year in that respect," he says.

"But I think we're entering 2026 in really rude health."

Politicians have given away too much power to deliver pledges, says PM's ex-aide

Kate Whannel

3 Jan, 2026

Politicians have given away too much power to lawyers, activists and regulators, and cannot deliver their promises, an ex-aide to the prime minister has said.

Writing in The Times, Paul Ovenden, who quit as Keir Starmer's director of political strategy last September after offensive messages he had sent in 2017 surfaced, said the British state had got "bigger and bigger while simultaneously and systematically emasculating itself".

He also said the case of the British-Egyptian activist Alaa Abd El Fattah "revealed the sheer weirdness of how Whitehall spends its time".

Speaking to the BBC, he said with a "stiffening resolve" politicians could "take back control" of the levers of democracy.

Mr Ovenden told Radio 4's Today programme, that he believed Sir Keir was "exactly the right person" to make changes adding: "He does feel those frustrations very acutely."

Separately, Chris Powell – who worked on four Labour general elections and the brother of the PM's adviser Jonathan Powell – has said the Labour government needs a "fundamental reset" in order to fight off the electoral threat posed by Reform UK.

Writing in The Guardian, he said voters were "fed up, think nothing works – and some are simply angry and feel ignored".

Their comments come at the start of a potentially difficult year for the prime minister which includes local elections in May and the threat of a leadership challenge from those in the Labour Party unhappy with his performance so far.

Mr Abd El Fattah was imprisoned in an Egyptian jail for more than a decade after being convicted of "spreading fake news" about torture in the country.

He was released in September following lobbying by successive British governments and arrived in the UK last week.

His arrival was initially welcomed by the prime minister who said he was "delighted" and that his case had been "a top priority for my government".

However, Sir Keir faced criticism when social media posts emerged in which Mr Abd El Fattah called for the killing of Zionists and police officers.

Sir Keir said he had been unaware of the "absolutely abhorrent" posts, which Mr Abd El Fattah has since apologised for, and that the government was reviewing the "information failures in this case".

Reflecting on the case, Mr Ovenden told Radio 4's Today programme: "We'd be having long meetings on the priorities of the government and they would be railroaded by any other business into discussions about this gentleman.

"Most of us on the political side of government weren't that aware of it, weren't that tuned into it because it didn't impact us on a day-to-day basis.

"It actually became a kind of running joke within government that people would always find a way to bring it back to this conversation."

He said the case "became sort of totemic of the distraction of issues that it felt like a different part of government were fascinated by".

Asked why politicians could not ignore these subjects, Mr Ovenden said they had "effectively handed away power".

"What they're really trying to do is hand away risk but they've handed away power to arm's length bodies, to quangos, to activists, to lawyers, to regulatory framework, to well-networked organisations... who are able to basically stop the machinery of government doing things."

He said examples of subjects he considered to be distractions included paying colonial reparations or banning vaping in pub gardens.

He added that it was "no surprise the public are fed up with politicians' ability to get things done" but that he believed that "we can change this and change quite quickly".

He argued that the government should start by scaling back some of the government's legal obligations such as environmental obligations for building and the right to launch legal challenges against government policies through judicial reviews.

His comments echoed a sentiment previously expressed by others in government, including the prime minister.

Before Christmas, when asked by the parliamentary Liaison Committee what he had found most difficult in government, Sir Keir replied: "Speed and ability to get things done in Parliament.

"We have so many checks and balances and consultations and regulations and arm's length bodies.

"My own sense, after 12 to 18 months in the job - and this is a fault of governments of all political colours - is that every time something has gone wrong in the past, successive governments have put in place another procedure, another body or another consultation to try to stop ourselves ever making a mistake again.

"My experience as prime minister is of frustration that every time I go to pull a lever, there are a whole bunch of regulations, consultations and arm's length bodies that mean the action from pulling the lever to delivery is longer than I think it ought to be, which is among the reasons I want to cut down on regulation generally and within government."

Rep. Mark Harris to Newsmax: Radical Islam 'Teaches on Harming Innocent People'

02 January 2026

By Eric Mack

The United States does not stand for terrorism, but it is now more vulnerable to it than ever, Rep. Mark Harris, R-N.C., told Newsmax after the FBI foiled what it said was an ISIS-inspired plot in his district.

"I think we all understand — and we need to understand if we don't — that radical Islam focuses and teaches on harming innocent people, which is just the opposite of what we stand for in our United States Constitution, which protects the liberty of all people," Harris told Friday night's "Greg Kelly Reports."

"I'm very thankful for the U.S. attorney, for all of those law enforcement that found the material, followed up on it.

"This was a year in the making.

"And listen, the fact that they were able to foil this here in the last few days before New Year's Eve, when he was planning to carry it out, is absolutely a blessing from God."

Harris said he was stunned by details revealed in an FBI press conference Friday morning.

"It was shocking that this was an ISIS-inspired terrorist attack planned right here in North Carolina," Harris said.

The congressman also highlighted concerns about the radicalization of young Americans online and said families can be the first line of defense, while noting failures in the state's involuntary commitment process that nearly allowed the suspect to go free.

"There was an interesting thing that was pointed out by the U.S. attorney today, and that was that they actually tried to get him committed, involuntarily committed, earlier in the week through a state magistrate," Harris said. "And unfortunately, the state magistrate would not do it.

"But I was thankful the FBI did not step back, but continued until a federal magistrate was able to take action on what they had."

"So we've got a lot of issues here that we've got to consider here in North Carolina and make sure that this kind of thing doesn't happen again," he said.

'This isn’t leadership': Israel blasts Zohran Mamdani; NYC Mayor scraps antisemitism definition on Day One

Jan 2, 2026

Israel blasted New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Friday, saying he’s pouring “antisemitic gasoline on an open fire” after the Democrat used his first day in office to roll back multiple city policies supporting Israel.

Mamdani revoked an executive order signed last month by former Mayor Eric Adams that barred city officials from boycotting or divesting from Israel.

His administration also repealed an order adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism, which Adams’ administration said included “demonising Israel and holding it to double standards as forms of contemporary antisemitism.” The IHRA definition is viewed by many Jewish leaders as a key standard in fighting antisemitism.

Israel’s foreign ministry accused the new mayor of inflaming tensions in a strongly worded statement posted online.

“On his very first day as @NYCMayor, Mamdani shows his true face: He scraps the IHRA definition of antisemitism and lifts restrictions on boycotting Israel,” it said on X, adding, “This isn’t leadership. It’s antisemitic gasoline on an open fire.”

Mamdani also axed Executive Order 61, issued last month, which directed the NYPD to step up enforcement to protect synagogues and other religious institutions from harassment by protesters. The order included restrictions creating buffer zones that limited demonstrations within a certain distance of churches, mosques and synagogues.

City Hall said Mamdani’s first executive order revoked all executive orders issued by Adams on or after September 26, 2024 — the day the former mayor was indicted on federal corruption charges — to ensure “a fresh start for the incoming administration.” Officials said the mayor will reissue executive orders he continues to support.

The moves also drew criticism from local Republicans. Brooklyn Councilwoman Inna Vernikov wrote on social media, “We need to enforce federal law that’s already in place here because the pro-Hamas antisemites emboldened by @NYCMayor are coming!”

In a separate post, she criticised the repeal of the IHRA order, saying, “Mamdani @NYCMayor just UNDID previous executive order which adopted the IHRA definition of antisemitism.”

“IHRA protects from discrimination Jews who believe in self determination and provides clarity on the definition,” she added.

Britney Spears’s ex Sam Asghari supports short film about LGBTQ+ Muslims: ‘Being yourself is beautiful’

By Callum Wells

2 JANUARY 2026

Britney Spears’s ex-husband Sam Asghari is using his platform to support an upcoming gay short film that tackles acceptance within Muslim communities.

The Traitors star is involved in a new project titled Freedom of the Fly, which centres on a gay Muslim man attempting to reconcile his religious beliefs and family obligations with his sexuality.

Inspired by a true story, the film draws from real-world headlines documenting the persecution of gay men in countries including Asghari’s homeland.

“My inspiration behind this short film is to amplify the stories for those that are struggling with their sexuality” – Sam Asghari on Freedom of the Fly

Asghari, who arrived in the US from Iran at the age of twelve, appears in a promotional clip for the film in which he speaks candidly about why he wanted to be involved.

“My inspiration behind this short film is to amplify the stories for those that are struggling with their sexuality and to empower them to be themselves because being yourself is beautiful,” he said in a promo.

“It is already challenging enough to be yourself when it comes to your sexuality or while facing the fears to confront your family.”

He also addresses the urgent need to highlight the dangers faced by LGBTQ+ people in parts of the world where being gay remains criminalised.

“Gay men are being executed to this day in different countries and different cultures,” Asghari adds. “It is vital to be a voice for those who are struggling with this situation and amplify their stories.”

What do we know about Freedom of the Fly?

Freedom of the Fly is currently being produced by Canadian video production company 23Production. A release date and viewing details have yet to be announced.

It is also unclear whether Asghari appears in the film or is purely involved behind the scenes.

Hochul orders NY landmarks, including One World Trade Center, lit green for Muslim American Heritage Month

By Alexandra Koch

January 2, 2026

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday issued a proclamation declaring January Muslim American Heritage Month across the state and directed 16 state landmarks, including NYC's One World Trade Center, to be illuminated green Friday night in "celebration of the heritage and culture of Muslim Americans."

"Home to the largest Muslim American population in the nation, New York is proud to join in this month-long celebration, recognizing the values, faith and traditions of our Muslim American communities," Hochul said in a statement.

"New York remains committed to being a beacon of hope, tolerance, and inclusivity that celebrates the diversity of its Muslim American population and protects them from Islamophobia, hate, bias, and harm."

One World Trade Center stands on the site of 6 World Trade Center, which was heavily damaged by debris during the collapse of the North Tower in the 9/11 attacks.

The terrorists who carried out the 9/11 attacks were Muslim and members of al Qaeda, a violent militant group.

The move came just one day after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was sworn in with the Quran as the first Muslim mayor of the city.

"While I was proud to be sworn in as our city’s first Muslim mayor [Thursday], Muslims have been part of New York for centuries," Mamdani said in a statement. "We have built small businesses, raised our families, pursued every profession, enriched our culture and cuisine, and been a part of what makes our city what it is today.

"I am grateful for Governor Hochul’s leadership in recognizing these many contributions and ensuring that every January, Muslim New Yorkers can see ourselves reflected and recognized in a city and state that is also our home."

Other Muslim politicians, including New York State Assembly Deputy Majority Leader Charles Fall, state Sen. Robert Jackson, New York City Councilmember Shahana Hanif and New York City Councilmember Yusef Salaam applauded the designation, thanking Hochul for honoring the community and promoting inclusivity.

Council of Peoples Organization CEO Mohammad Razvi noted the Muslim community has "demonstrated resilience in the years following 9/11 while continuing to strengthen New York through immigrant contributions, civic leadership and service. This recognition affirms our place in the social, cultural and civic life of our state. … This moment reflects New York’s continued commitment to civil rights, religious freedom, unity and interfaith solidarity and to ensuring that people of all backgrounds are seen, valued and included."

While anti-Muslim hate crime increased after the 9/11 attacks, Jews were targeted more frequently than all other groups combined in New York City in 2024, with anti-Jewish incidents accounting for 54% of all hate crimes, according to a report from The Times of Israel.

The Institute for Social Policy and Understanding reported the Muslim community in New York City makes up 12.5% of pharmacists, 40% of taxi drivers and more than 57% of street food vendors.

Fox News Digital has reached out to organizations supporting 9/11 victims, survivors and their families for comment.

JANUARY 2, 2026

Governor Hochul Issues Proclamation Recognizing Muslim American Heritage Month For the First Time in New York State

Sixteen State Landmarks To Be Lit Green in Honor of the Heritage and Culture of New York’s Muslim American Community

Governor Kathy Hochul today issued the first ever proclamation declaring January as Muslim American Heritage Month across New York State. Governor Hochul further directed 16 state landmarks to be illuminated green this evening in observance this month, and in celebration of the heritage and culture of Muslim Americans.

For the first time in state history, Governor Hochul has proclaimed the month of January as Muslim American Heritage Month in the state of New York. This designation recognizes the significant contributions Muslim Americans have contributed to society throughout history including in the arts, sciences, mathematics, technology, literature, music, medicine, and philosophy, and encourages the people of New York to take the opportunity to better appreciate, recognize, and understand the rich cultures, histories, and principles of the Muslim American community.

I am grateful for Governor Hochul’s leadership in recognizing these many contributions and ensuring that every January, Muslim New Yorkers can see ourselves reflected and recognized in a city and state that is also our home.”

Assemblymember Charles D. Fall said, “As the first Muslim elected to the New York State Assembly from Staten Island, I’ve always believed leadership is about uplifting every voice in our state. Muslim New Yorkers are vital to our communities as neighbors, parents, business owners, and public servants. We are blessed to live in a state with balance in recognizing its diverse demographics, and an administration that engages its people without indulging in otherism. To all those honoring Muslim-American Heritage Month, we stand together, green lights a-lit on every monument, saluting our past giants, honoring our present stewards, and lifting the future leaders yet to come.”

Thank you, Governor Hochul, for your determination to cherish and uplift all individuals.”

For a community that has demonstrated resilience in the years following 9/11—while continuing to strengthen New York through immigrant contributions, civic leadership, and service—this recognition affirms our place in the social, cultural, and civic life of our state. In celebration of this milestone, COPO will light up green on January 2nd to honor Muslim American Heritage Month and to send a message of pride and belonging to our youth and families. This moment reflects New York’s continued commitment to civil rights, religious freedom, unity, and interfaith solidarity, and to ensuring that people of all backgrounds are seen, valued, and included.”

Albany Muslim Advocacy Coalition Cofounder Mehak Jamil said, “The Albany Muslim Advocacy Coalition (AMAC) welcomes Governor Hochul's proclamation of Muslim American Heritage Month as an opportunity to highlight the contributions of Muslim communities in the Capital Region and across New York. As the first Muslim advocacy organization in the Capital Region, AMAC is committed to fostering understanding and equitable representation, and encourages all public leaders to deepen their engagement by visiting local mosques and hearing directly from their Muslim constituents.”

We hope this month will foster a deeper appreciation for the approximately 1 million Muslims who call New York home, who serve as doctors, teachers, first responders, artists, and entrepreneurs, contributing daily to the strength and vitality of this great state. Many also gave their lives like NYPD Detective Didarul Islam. We commend Governor Kathy Hochul for her leadership in promoting inclusivity and recognizing the integral role of all communities in the story of New York. May this initiative inspire greater harmony, dispel misconceptions, and remind us all that our collective heritage is one of our greatest strengths. Let us move forward together, in peace and with shared purpose.”

For Muslim New Yorkers, this is more than symbolism. It is public recognition that our families, workers, students, and small businesses have helped build this state for generations. At a time when Islamophobia and misinformation are rising, visible inclusion like this matters. We look forward to partnering with leaders across New York to ensure this month brings real commitments to safety, dignity, and opportunity for every community.”

Imam Dr. Tahir Kukaj of the Albanian Islamic Cultural Center said, “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Governor Kathy Hochul for proclaiming January as Muslim American Heritage Month in New York State. Lighting state landmarks in green is more than a symbol — it is a message of unity, dignity, and shared belonging. May this moment deepen understanding, inspire service, and strengthen the bonds that make New York a home for all.”

Hillside Islamic Center Chairman Abdul Aziz Bhuiyan said, The history of Muslims as integral members of the United States, particularly in New York, spans centuries. This includes the early presence of enslaved individuals brought by ships and later, migrants arriving on merchant marine vessels. As the Muslim population in New York has grown, it is fitting that their contributions and presence are recognized and appreciated. On behalf of the Muslim Community of Nassau County (MCNC), Majlis Ash-Shura of Metropolitan New York, and as the Chairman of the Hillside Islamic Center, we express our sincere gratitude to Governor Kathy Hochul for dedicating and proclaiming January as Muslim American Heritage Month.

It honors generations who have contributed to the civic, cultural, and moral life of this great state. By celebrating Muslim American heritage, NYS reaffirms its commitment to the rich tapestry of diverse constituents who work hard for our common good.”

Hisham Tawfiq of the Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood (MIB) said, “Muslim American Heritage Month is a celebration of the history, culture, and contributions of Muslims both in the U.S. and globally. It highlights Muslim achievements in science, arts, and leadership, helps counter stereotypes and Islamophobia, and affirms the unity of deity. The month also promotes understanding and a more inclusive narrative by showcasing the diverse heritages and positive impacts of Muslims around the world.”

Eid Holiday Coalition Founder and President Dr. Uzma Syed said, “The recognition of Muslim American Heritage Month in New York State is a momentous and meaningful occasion. As the most diverse state in the nation and home to the largest Muslim population in the country, New York is strengthened by the contributions of Muslim New Yorkers who help shape a brighter future for all who call the Empire State home. Together, we can continue working toward a tomorrow where every New Yorker feels seen, valued, and a true sense of belonging. The Eid Holiday Coalition welcomes this proclamation from Governor Kathy Hochul and looks forward to continued collaboration in building a more inclusive future for all residents.”

Elhaam Academy Board Chair Imam Muhammad Shahidullah said, "This is a historic turning point for New York. By formally recognizing Muslim American Heritage Month for the first time, we honor the generations of faith, service, and civic courage that have built this State — affirming once and for all that Muslim New Yorkers are an essential part of our shared American story.”

Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU) Executive Director Tuqa Nusairat said, "Governor Hochul’s proclamation not only honors the indispensable contributions American Muslims have made to the cultural, economic, and civic life of New York, but also serves as a meaningful step in pushing back against rampant Islamophobia by fostering greater understanding, visibility, and respect for a community that too often faces bias and exclusion. Our research shows that this dynamic and diverse community makes up 12.5% of all pharmacists, 40% of taxi drivers, and more than 57% of street food vendors. In 2016, a total of 95,816 small businesses were owned by Muslims employing 251,864 workers. This is only a snapshot of the profound contributions Muslims make to New York City, underscoring a simple truth: Muslims are not a marginal presence, but a vital part of what keeps New York running."

CAIR Reiterates Tuberville Has Open Invite to Visit Alabama Mosque After Latest Anti-Islam Tirade

January 2, 2026

Alabama senator claims ‘enemy is inside the gates’ because new NYC mayor Mamdani sworn-in on Quran

(WASHINGTON, DC, 1/2/26) – The Alabama chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-AL), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today reiterated its call for Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) to visit a mosque in that state after he claimed on social media that, “The enemy is inside the gates,” when he learned that the new mayor of New York City Zohran Mamdani was to be sworn in using a Quran.

Twice last year, CAIR called on Tuberville to visit a mosque after he made statements denigrating Islam and smearing American Muslims.

In a statement, CAIR-AL Staff Attorney A. Britton O’Shields said:

“Sen. Tuberville’s rhetoric continues to demonize millions of peaceful, patriotic American Muslims simply because of their faith. Suggesting that a Muslim public servant taking an oath on the Quran represents an ‘enemy’ is dangerous, irresponsible and beneath the dignity of the office he holds.

“The Alabama Muslim community’s invitation to Sen. Tuberville remains open. We urge him to visit an Alabama mosque, meet Muslim families in his own state and learn firsthand that Muslims are not a threat. They are an integral part of the American story.”

Last month, CAIR added Sen. Tuberville to its list of anti-Muslim extremists in the United States in the wake of his increasingly hateful and dangerous attacks on Alabama Muslims, including his recent targeting of Alabama Muslim K-12 school children.

That was the first time that CAIR has ever designated a U.S. senator as an anti-Muslim extremist.

CAIR’s designation came in the wake of Tuberville openly celebrating the campaign of anti-Muslim hate that led a K-12 Islamic private school to cancel its planned relocation to Hoover, Alabama, amid safety concerns. Tuberville also flatly declared on Dec. 14 that Islam is not a religion.

In its profile of Sen. Tuberville on Islamophobia.org, CAIR’s research and advocacy team writes, in part:

“The first reported episodes of Tuberville making explicitly anti-Muslim statements date to June 2025 and afterward. At the time of writing this analysis, CAIR researchers could locate no public statements critical of Islam or Muslims prior to June 2025.

“Like many anti-Muslim public figures, Tuberville claims “Islam is not a religion. It is a cult.” This is a common tactic intended to deprive Muslims of the First Amendment protections. He also places his concerns in a counter-terrorism frame—declaring “we are at war” with people “coming here from Muslim countries” to justify blanket measures against Muslims. Tuberville repeatedly uses Sharia as a term to frighten voters and vilify all Muslims and believes Muslims “are getting ready to take over New York.” He has repeated conspiracy theories about Muslim only neighborhoods in Europe and that Islam enjoins perpetual war on its followers.”

Following the horrific attack in Bondi Beach Australia CAIR joined Australian Muslims in denouncing the deadly attack on the Jewish community in that nation and commended a Muslim “hero” for acting to disarm one of the attackers.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.

Trump warning over Iran protests 'reckless' says foreign minister

January 3, 2026

Claire Keenan

Donald Trump's warning that the US will intervene if peaceful protesters are killed was "reckless and dangerous", Iran's foreign minister has said.

Abbas Araghchi's comments came after the US president said Washington "will come to their rescue" of demonstrators taking part in protests over Iran's economy, writing in a brief social media post: "We are locked and loaded and ready to go."

Araghchi indicated Iran's armed forces were on standby and "know exactly where to aim" in the event of an attack.

At least eight people are reported to have died during the week-long protests, as of Saturday morning.

Trump wrote on Friday: "If Iran shots [sic] and violently kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue."

The US president did not specify what action Washington might take. Previously, it has carried out strikes on Iran's nuclear sites, which elicited a retaliatory strike on a US base in Qatar.

"Given President Trump's deployment of the National Guard within US borders, he of all people should know that criminal attacks on public property cannot be tolerated," Araghchi wrote on X.

Iran would "forcefully reject any interference in their internal affairs", he added.

Meanwhile, an Iranian police spokesman said officers would not allow what he called "enemies" to turn "unrest into chaos".

Protests have spread to a number of cities and towns with running battles reported between security forces and demonstrators.

The protests began in Tehran, with shopkeepers angered by another sharp fall in the value of the Iranian currency, the rial, against the US dollar on the open market.

By Tuesday, university students were involved and the protests had spread to several cities, with people chanting against the country's clerical rulers.

Two people died in clashes between protesters and security forces in the south-western city of Lordegan, according to the semi-official Fars news agency and the human rights group Hengaw, which said they were protesters, naming them as Ahmad Jalil and Sajjad Valamanesh.

Three people were killed in Azna, while and another died in Kouhdasht, all in the west of the country, Fars reported. It did not specify whether they were demonstrators or security forces personnel.

One death was reported in Fuladshahr, central Iran, and another casualty in Marvdasht, in the south.

BBC has not been able to independently verify the deaths.

The demonstrations have been the most widespread since an uprising in 2022 sparked by the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a young woman accused by morality police of not wearing her veil properly, but they have not been on the same scale.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said he will listen to the "legitimate demands" of the protesters.

But the country's Prosecutor General Mohammad Movahedi-Azad warned that any attempt to create instability would be met with a "decisive response".

Iran's UN Ambassador Amir-Saeid Iravani called on the UN Security Council to condemn Trump's statement in letter to the secretary-general and president of the Security Council on Friday, news agency Reuters reported.

"Iran will exercise its rights decisively and proportionately. The United States of America bears full responsibility for any consequences arising from these unlawful threats and any ensuing escalation," he wrote in the letter.

Maduro says Venezuela open to US talks on drug trafficking

Chris Graham

January 3, 2026

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said on Thursday he was open to talks with the US on drug trafficking and oil, after weeks of an escalating pressure campaign against his government.

In an interview with Venezuelan state TV, Maduro said he was ready for dialogue with the US "wherever they want and whenever they want".

He also evaded a question about a statement by President Donald Trump that the US had hit a docking facility in Venezuela - the first such attack inside the country reportedly carried out by the CIA.

US forces have been hitting vessels they suspect of smuggling narcotics through the Caribbean and eastern Pacific for the past three months.

In total, there have been more than 30 strikes on vessels as part of the Trump administration's "war on drugs" , with more than 110 people killed since the US carried out its first attack on a boat in international waters on 2 September.

The latest attack came on Wednesday when two boats alleged to be carrying drugs were struck, killing five people on board, according to the US military.

On Monday, Trump said the US had carried out a strike on a "dock area" linked to alleged Venezuelan drug boats, causing a "major explosion".

The blast was caused by a drone strike carried out by the CIA, according to CNN and the New York Times, which cited sources close to the matter. If confirmed, it would be the first known US operation inside Venezuela.

But Maduro was elusive in the interview. Asked if he could confirm or deny the attack, Maduro said "this could be something we talk about in a few days".

As well as drug trafficking, Maduro also said he was open for talks on oil and migration.

In recent months, Trump has focused on fighting the influx of drugs - especially fentanyl and cocaine - into the US.

The US president has also doubled the reward for information leading to Maduro's capture and has announced that he would designate the Maduro government as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO).

Maduro has vehemently denied being a cartel leader and has accused the US of using its "war on drugs" as an excuse to try to depose him and get its hands on Venezuela's vast oil reserves.

Counternarcotic experts say that Venezuela is a relatively minor player in global drug trafficking, acting as a transit country through which drugs produced elsewhere are smuggled.

Its neighbour, Colombia, is the world's largest producer of cocaine but most of it is thought to enter the US by other routes, not via Venezuela.

Without providing evidence, Trump has accused Maduro of "emptying his prisons and insane asylums" and "forcing" its inmates to migrate to the US.

Close to eight million Venezuelans are estimated to have fled the country's economic crisis and repression since 2013 - some heading for the US.

The US has also been cracking down on sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela.

US forces seized an oil tanker off Venezuela on 10 December, saying it was "used to transport sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran". Venezuela described it as an act of "international piracy".

Since then, the US has seized one more oil tanker and pursued a third.

The Trump administration has cast its operations against alleged drug boats as a non-international armed conflict against the alleged traffickers, but legal experts say they could be in violation of the laws governing such conflict.

The US has provided no evidence that the boats it has targeted are carrying drugs. But the US Southern Command again insisted this week that "intelligence confirmed the vessels were transiting along known narco-trafficking routes and engaged in narco-trafficking".

Trump warns US is 'locked and loaded' if Iran kills protesters

Jan 3, 2026

DUBAI: US President Donald Trump threatened on Friday to come to the aid of protesters in Iran if security forces fire on them, days into unrest that has left several dead and posed the biggest internal threat to Iranian authorities in years.

If Iran "violently kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue," Trump said in a post on Truth Social early Friday morning. "We are locked and loaded and ready to go."

Ali Larijani, the head of Iran's top security body, said in a post on social media on Friday that Trump "should know that US interference in this internal matter would mean destabilizing the entire region and destroying America's interests." He added: "The American people should know - Trump started this adventurism. They ought to watch over their soldiers." Iran continues to support groups in Iraq that have previously fired rockets at US forces in the country, as well as the Houthi group that controls much of northern Yemen.

Trump did not specify what sort of action the US could take in support of the protests. Washington has long imposed broad financial sanctions on Tehran. US presidents have been wary of engaging militarily in Iran, but in June, Trump ordered airstrikes against Iranian nuclear facilities. A spokesperson for US state department said Washington would "continue to put maximum pressure on the regime" in Iran, accusing Iranian authorities of "squandering billions on terrorist proxies and nuclear weapons research".

Biggest protest in 3 years Protests erupted across Iran this week amid soaring prices and a collapsing currency that has shaken the economy and pushed many Iranians into deeper economic hardship. The country's currency fell to a record low against the US dollar last weekend, while annual inflation climbed to 42.2% in Dec.

The protests have spread across Iran, with deadly confrontations between demonstrators and security forces focused in western provinces. State-affiliated media and rights groups have reported at least six deaths since Wednesday.

Iran has seen off repeated bouts of major unrest in recent decades, often quelling protests with heavy security measures and mass arrests. But economic problems may leave authorities more vulnerable now. This week's protests are the biggest in three years, since nationwide demonstrations triggered by the death of a young woman in custody in late 2022 paralysed Iran for weeks, with rights groups reporting hundreds killed.

Video verified by Reuters showed dozens of people gathered in front of a burning police station overnight, as gunshots sporadically rang out and people shouted "shameless, shameless" at the authorities.

In the southern city of Zahedan, where Iran's Baluch minority predominates, the human rights news group Hengaw reported that protesters had chanted slogans including "Death to the dictator".

Hengaw has reported 29 arrests so far over the unrest, mostly in the west, and including 14 members of Iran's Kurdish minority. State TV also reported the arrest of an unspecified number of people in another western city, Kermanshah, accused of manufacturing petrol bombs and home-made pistols. The deaths acknowledged by official media have been in small western cities of Lordegan and Kuhdasht.

Prez acknowledges failings

During the latest unrest, the elected President Masoud Pezeshkian has struck a conciliatory tone, pledging dialogue with protest leaders over the cost-of-living crisis. Speaking on Thursday, Pezeshkian acknowledged that failings by the authorities were behind the crisis. "We are to blame... Do not look for America or anyone else to blame. We must serve properly so that people are satisfied with us...," he said.

Photos: Nigeria Military Drone Crashes In Niger State

January 2, 2026

By George Oshogwe Ogbolu

A military combat drone has crashed in the Kontagora forest area of Niger State, raising fresh concerns over aerial operations in the North-Central region.

The unmanned combat aircraft went down on Friday under circumstances that are yet to be clarified.

A photograph shows the drone lying wrecked in a forested area. The aircraft was seen badly damaged but did not explode on impact.

As of the time of filing this report, it could not be independently confirmed the location from which the Nigerian military launched the crashed drone.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian military has yet to issue any official statement on the incident.

Similarly, the Niger State Government has not released any response regarding the crash.

The development comes amid earlier reports that some men suspected to be herdsmen were seen handling what they claimed were fragments of a bomb dropped by the United States military on Christmas Day in Jabo community, Sokoto State.

In a video obtained by the online platform, the men—dressed like herdsmen—were heard speaking in Hausa while mocking the United States and downplaying the power of the American military.

They claimed that no U.S. bomb or missile could successfully strike Nigerian soil.

The footage showed the men casually rolling, touching and laughing around the metallic fragment, as if it posed no danger.

In the video, one of the men was heard urging the others to display bravery while praying that the object would not explode.

“Show your strength, my people. I am praying for you that this fragment will not explode by God’s grace,” he said.

Another voice mocked the American military, boasting about Nigerian resilience.

“Army, you are a disgrace. We Nigerians supersede you. Nothing can defeat us except God’s wish,” the voice said.

Failed Peace Pact, Disagreement Over Fresh Budget, Appointments Ignite Fresh War Between Wike, Fubara

January 2, 2026

By Rachel Okporu Fadoju

The failure of the peace pact reached before the expiration of the state of emergency in Rivers State and disagreement over a supplementary budget proposed by associates of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Governor Siminalayi Fubara have reportedly ignited a fresh face-off.

Naija News reports that Wike has been openly attacking Fubara over his recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Recall that in June, the National Assembly approved an appropriation of 1.48 trillion for Rivers State during the tenure of Ibok-Ete Ibas as the administrator of the state.

However, sources familiar with recent developments in Rivers State said the rift rekindled after Wike pushed for a supplementary appropriation through state lawmakers loyal to him, but Fubara rejected the proposal, arguing that the budget passed by the national assembly under emergency rule was sufficient for the rest of 2025.

According to TheCable, following Fubara’s rejection of the supplementary budget proposal, Wike summoned key political allies, including members of the state assembly, to the residence of Rivers’ prominent political elder, Ferdinand Anabraba, in Port Harcourt.

A source at the meeting said Wike declared he was ready for a fresh political confrontation with Fubara.

The source said, “Wike told them plainly that he was declaring fresh war on Fubara.”

Fubara’s Defection To APC

An insider who spoke to TheCable said President Bola Tinubu approved Fubara’s alignment with the APC after the Governor noticed an imminent political showdown with Wike.

APC governors also embraced Fubara, partly because of lingering tensions among them and Wike.

An insider said, “The thinking was that bringing Fubara fully into the APC would weaken Wike’s leverage.”

Failed Peace Pact And Commissioner Appointments

Fubara reportedly promised, as part of the peace deal with Tinubu and Wike, that he would not contest a second term, but it appears he will now do so in his new party.

A source said part of the peace terms proposed by Wike before the suspension of the emergency rule in Rivers included a demand that Fubara reinstate Sergeant Awuse, the traditional ruler of the Emohua kingdom, as chair of the state’s traditional rulers’ council.

Fubara had sacked Awuse, a strong ally of Wike, in June 2024 and appointed Chike Worlu Wodo in his stead.

Wike also demanded the appointment of new commissioners, a request Fubara failed to implement.

The source added, “Fubara felt those conditions would completely undermine his authority as Governor. That was the final straw.”

Shipping Lines Planning Strike As Tinubu Govt Begins New Tax Regime

January 2, 2026

By Richard Ogunsile

There was palpable tension in the nation’s maritime sector on Thursday, as freight forwarding practitioners expressed fears over the implementation of the Federal Government’s new tax regime, which took effect on January 1, 2026.

Some freight agents who spoke with journalists on Thursday said the policy had already triggered reactions among shipping lines, with reports that some companies were holding meetings over possible increases in freight charges.

Naija News reports that from January 1, 2026, the Federal Government commenced a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s tax system, one of the most far-reaching reforms in decades.

According to the government, the new tax regime is aimed at simplifying taxation, promoting economic growth, expanding the tax net, improving compliance and reducing the burden on low-income earners.

The reform is part of a broader fiscal policy initiative under President Bola Tinubu to modernise the country’s tax structure, enhance revenue collection efficiency and strengthen Nigeria’s economic competitiveness.

Despite some political controversy surrounding legislative documentation, the Federal Government reaffirmed January 1, 2026, as the official commencement date for the reforms.

Commenting on the impact of the tax reforms on the maritime industry, the Head of Department, Shipping, Air and Terminal Logistics at the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders, Ugochukwu Nnadi, disclosed that some shipping companies had begun consultations aimed at adjusting their charges.

Nnadi said two shipping companies held meetings on Tuesday to discuss possible fare increases.

“They are meeting with plans to increase their freight charges because they wouldn’t like to be caught unawares. Nobody wants to be caught unawares,” he told The PUNCH.

“They haven’t implemented the law, and they have already started manipulating it, so nobody would want to be caught unawares. They are making preparations about it.”

Tax Policy Will Affect Operations – Agents

Also speaking, the Apapa Chapter Chairman of the National Council of Managing Directors of Licensed Customs Agents, Abayomi Duyile, said the new tax policy would have a direct impact on freight forwarders and clearing agents.

“It is going to affect us. You know most of the money we spend on clearing goods comes with receipts, like shipping, terminal and other charges. So when you tax such money, it is definitely going to affect us,” Duyile said.

He warned that additional taxes on existing port charges could further raise the cost of doing business at the nation’s seaports.

Duyile also criticised the reported plans by some shipping companies to raise freight charges, describing the move as premature and provocative.

“They want to increase, and we are saying no, that they should wait till the fourth week in January. Let’s meet and discuss with our members,” he said.

Warning of possible industrial action, he added, “If they increase, we are going to picket them, because the increment is getting too much. They did an increment last year; it is creating tension at the ports.”

Stakeholders in the maritime sector fear that any immediate increase in freight charges, combined with the new tax regime, could worsen congestion, raise import costs and further strain port operations in the coming weeks.

By George Oshogwe Ogbolu

Canada deported 366 Nigerians between January and October 2025 as it intensified immigration enforcement at the fastest pace in over a decade.

Statistics from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) removals programme further revealed that 974 Nigerians are currently listed under “removal in progress,” awaiting deportation from Canada.

The data, last updated on November 25, 2025, showed that Nigeria ranked ninth among the top 10 nationalities deported from Canada within the period under review. Nigeria also placed fifth among countries with the highest number of pending removals.

A breakdown of the figures showed that Nigerian deportations have fluctuated over the years.

In 2019, Canada deported 339 Nigerians; the number dropped to 302 in 2020, 242 in 2021 and 199 in 2022. Nigeria did not feature among the top 10 deported nationalities in 2023 and 2024.

However, in 2025, the country returned to the list with 366 removals recorded within just 10 months—an eight per cent increase compared to the 2019 figure.

The deportations come amid an aggressive immigration crackdown in Canada, with the CBSA now removing nearly 400 foreign nationals weekly, the highest rate in more than a decade.

In the 2024–2025 fiscal year alone, Canada deported 18,048 individuals at a cost of approximately $78m.

Under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, the CBSA is legally mandated to remove foreign nationals issued enforceable removal orders. Grounds for removal include security concerns, criminality, organised crime, health issues, financial reasons, misrepresentation, and non-compliance with immigration rules.

About 83 per cent of deportees are failed refugee claimants whose asylum applications were rejected, while criminality accounts for roughly four per cent of removals.

Canadian law provides for three types of removal orders: departure orders, which require individuals to leave within 30 days; exclusion orders, which bar re-entry for one to five years; and deportation orders, which permanently prohibit re-entry unless special authorisation is granted.

Analysis of the CBSA data showed that Nigeria is the only African country among the top 10 nationalities deported from Canada in 2025.

Other African countries were grouped under “remaining nationals,” accounting for 6,233 removals during the year.

The top 10 countries for deportations in 2025 were Mexico (3,972), India (2,831), Haiti (2,012), Colombia (737), Romania (672), United States (656), Venezuela (562), China (385), Nigeria (366), and Pakistan (359).

In the removal-in-progress inventory, Nigeria again emerged as the only African country in the top 10, with 974 persons awaiting deportation.

President of the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers, Aisling Bondy, had earlier warned that deportations could increase further if proposed border legislation is passed.

“One of the clauses in that bill is that a lot of people will be permanently banned from filing a refugee claim in Canada,” she said.

Despite the rising deportations, Canada remains a major destination for Nigerians seeking better opportunities.

According to the 2021 Canadian census, over 40,000 Nigerians migrated to Canada between 2016 and 2021, making them the largest African immigrant group and the fifth-largest recent immigrant population.

Data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada showed that 6,600 Nigerians obtained permanent residency in the first four months of 2024, ranking fourth behind India, the Philippines and China.

Between 2005 and 2024, no fewer than 71,459 Nigerians acquired Canadian citizenship, placing Nigeria 10th among countries of origin for new Canadian citizens.

Canada’s ageing population and labour shortages continue to drive demand for skilled professionals and students from Nigeria.

Your Appointment Is Not For Pleasure, But Work – Fubara To New Advisers

January 2, 2026

By Enioluwa Adeniyi

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has charged newly sworn-in Special Advisers to treat their appointments as a call to duty and not a position of comfort or celebration.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony held at the Government House, Port Harcourt, on Friday, Fubara said the appointments were aimed at strengthening the machinery of governance and accelerating the administration’s developmental agenda.

“It is not pleasure; it is work. And every one of you here that has been assigned some responsibility in time past has always proven yourself,” he said.

The governor, who reaffirmed his commitment to steady governance amid ongoing political tensions in the state, said his administration is determined to recover lost ground and continue delivering on its mandate.

He said, “We have every reason to move on, to ensure that the lost grounds are regained. So what we are doing this morning, or let’s say this afternoon, is bringing in some persons on board to ensure that the wheel of governance continues to roll smoothly in our state.”

Fubara noted that the appointees are not new to the workings of government, stating that their prior experience makes them well-suited for immediate impact.

“They’ve been with us, they’ve worked with us, and they understand the philosophy of this administration. So my charge is not much, because you already know what you have come to do.

“It will not be a problem following and ensuring that our goals are achieved,” he said.

Congratulating the appointees, Fubara reminded them that their selection was a rare privilege and urged them not to betray the confidence reposed in them.

He said, “Let me congratulate you for finding your name in the lists, in the midst of millions. It’s a rare opportunity. Don’t let us down. We will start to work for Rivers people.”

Those sworn in include:

Barr. Eloka Tasie-Amadi, former Commissioner for Works

Prof. Peter Medee, former Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning

Barr. Emmanuel Frank Fubara, former Commissioner for Finance

Victor Ekaro, former Special Adviser on Security to ex-Governor Nyesom Wike

Dr. Darlington Oji, former Caretaker Chairman of Ikwerre LGA

Govt Orders Reopening Of Kebbi Schools After Shutdown

January 2, 2026

By Richard Ogunsile

The Kebbi State Government has directed the reopening of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state for the second term of the 2025/2026 academic session, with effect from Monday, January 5, 2026.

The directive was issued on Friday through separate statements jointly signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Kebbi State Universal Basic Education Board, Isah Ibrahim, and the Deputy Director (Academics) of the Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education, Aliyu Bagarawa.

Naija News recalls that the state government had earlier ordered the closure of all public and private schools following the abduction of 25 students of Government Science Secondary School, Maga, in Zuru Local Government Area by armed men suspected to be bandits.

The temporary shutdown was aimed at safeguarding students and staff while security measures were reviewed across the state.

According to the latest statement, the decision to reopen schools was part of the government’s resolve to maintain a stable and uninterrupted academic calendar after the successful completion of the first term.

“All school administrators, education secretaries, principals, head teachers, teachers, parents and students are hereby requested to take note of this directive and ensure strict compliance,” the statement partly read.

The government stressed that adequate preparations must be made ahead of resumption to ensure a smooth take-off of academic activities in both urban and rural areas of the state.

School heads were directed to put all necessary arrangements in place, including ensuring the readiness of teaching staff and facilities, before resumption.

Parents and guardians were also advised to ensure that their children and wards return to school promptly.

“The cooperation of parents and guardians is critical to achieving the objectives of this directive, as punctual resumption will enhance effective teaching and learning,” the statement added.

In a related circular, Zonal Education Officers, principals, head teachers and proprietors of private schools were informed that the first week of the second term would be dedicated to the conduct of outstanding first-term examinations.

According to the circular, normal academic activities and classroom teaching are scheduled to commence on Monday, January 12, 2026, immediately after the completion of the examinations.

The state government warned that all schools must strictly adhere to the approved resumption timetable and examination schedule, noting that monitoring teams would be deployed to ensure compliance across the state.

Malami, Son To Remain In Kuje Prison As Court Adjourns Case

January 2, 2026

By Doris Ijeoma Israel

Former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, and his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, will remain in Kuje Prison until January 7 when the court is set to rule on their bail requests.

Naija News reports that Justice Emeka Nwite gave the order after hearing arguments for and against the applications. Malami, his son, and a third defendant, Hajia Bashir Asabe of Ramadiya Property Limited, are facing trial over an alleged N9 billion money laundering case filed by the Federal Government.

The judge explained that he has other pending matters to attend to during the court vacation, so the ruling on the bail applications will be delivered on January 7.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Joseph Daudu, argued in favour of bail for the three defendants, while Emmanuel Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, represented the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and opposed the request.

All three defendants have entered a not-guilty plea to the charges brought against them.

Meanwhile, Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and officials of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) on Friday clashed at the Federal High Court in Abuja over security arrangements during the trial of former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

According to Leadership, the confrontation reportedly stemmed from a disagreement between the two agencies over which of them should take charge of security during the court proceedings involving the former minister.

It was gathered that tensions escalated as officials from both sides laid claim to controlling access and security at the court premises, particularly at the entrance to the courtroom.

Burkina Faso hails security gains and food self-sufficiency in 2025

January 2, 2026

Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, delivered a largely positive end-of-year address on December 31, highlighting major security improvements and the country’s achievement of food self-sufficiency, while laying out ambitious plans for 2026.

In his traditional New Year’s message, Traoré emphasized the success of Operation Lalmassga (“Ice Wall”), which enabled the Burkinabe armed forces to reclaim dozens of towns previously controlled by terrorist groups, particularly in the Nakambé region, near Kompienga Dam, Namungu in Gulmu, and Namsiguia around Djibo and Toulfé. He promised continued military offensives up to national borders and praised both the army and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) for their role in the territorial reconquest.

On the humanitarian front, Traoré noted that thousands of internally displaced people have returned to secure areas, receiving support to restart agricultural activities and benefit from newly built infrastructure.

Agriculture stood out as a major achievement, with Traoré announcing that Burkina Faso reached food self-sufficiency in 2025, thanks to effective campaigns, improved seeds, subsidies, and mechanization. Plans for 2026 include further land development, water retention projects, aquaculture, and fodder crop production.

The president also touched on mining, education, and health, noting state efforts to regain control over mineral resources, expand technical and professional education, and strengthen health facilities. Infrastructure development will continue with new road construction brigades and a shift toward high-rise urban planning.

Traoré reaffirmed Burkina Faso’s sovereign foreign policy, welcoming partners who respect national independence while rejecting external pressures. He concluded with a call to national values—integrity, dignity, and patriotism—urging citizens to embrace a new, corruption-free Burkina Faso focused on national development**.**

Arrest the cops, say lawyers for families of men killed in Durian Tunggal police shooting

03 Jan 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 3 — Lawyers acting for the families of three men killed during a police operation in Durian Tunggal have urged authorities to take immediate action against the officers involved, following the reclassification of the case as murder.

According to a report in New Straits Times, lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan said the officers should be arrested and remanded.

“Not a single policeman involved in the shooting has been arrested. This is contrary to the police Standard Operating Procedure. Why the double standards?” he reportedly said at a press conference before handing over a memorandum addressed to the Inspector-General of Police at Bukit Aman today.

He reportedly criticised a police statement saying the officers involved were no longer on active duty, arguing that this did not amount to a formal suspension, and called for the suspension of Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar pending the investigation.

The memorandum reportedly also called for separate investigations into alleged interference with the probe, as well as possible evidence tampering and false reporting, citing discrepancies between official accounts and material obtained by the legal team.

The three men — G. Logeswaran, 29, M. Puspanathan, 21, and M. Poovaneswaran, 24 — were shot dead at an oil palm plantation on November 24.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department later set up a special task force to investigate the shooting, taking over the probe from the Melaka police contingent.

On December 16, the Attorney-General’s Chambers said the case was reclassified under Section 302, which relates to the offence of murder, following briefings and recommendations from the police.

The AGC said, however, that the reclassification did not, at this stage, mean that a criminal offence had been established.

IKN State Mosque Targeted to Be Ready for Eid al-Fitr 2026

January 3, 2026

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka has set a target for the National Mosque in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN), East Kalimantan, to be ready for Eid al-Fitr prayers in 2026. Construction of the mosque has reached its final stages, with progress currently at 98.4 percent. The government expects the project to be fully completed by February 15, 2026.

"In the first phase, this mosque will hold around 29,000 worshipers out of a total planned capacity of 60,000. It is targeted to be used for the Eid al-Fitr prayer in 2026," Gibran said during his visit to the site on Saturday, January 3, 2026.

The Vice President emphasized that he would personally oversee the work to ensure the deadline is met without sacrificing quality.

Gibran, the former Solo Mayor, noted that the National Mosque is designed to be more than a place of worship. It is intended "as a symbol of the Islamic identity that encompasses all creatures in the new capital city of Indonesia," he stated. The design reflects a modern approach to religious architecture within the green city framework.

The mosque sits on a 32,125-square-meter plot, which includes a 2,221-square-meter commercial zone and 7,340 square meters for supporting facilities. The total building area spans 76,647 square meters across a four-story structure with two mezzanine floors. The project follows Green Building Principles (BGH), covering everything from structural work to landscape and smart electronic systems.

IKN Authority Head Basuki Hadimuljono accompanied the Vice President during the inspection. Basuki stated that Gibran paid close attention to design quality and progress. He noted that the Vice President appreciated the mosque’s unique concept, which differs from traditional designs in its shape and its physical connection to other religious areas in the new capital.

"The mosque in IKN is shaped like a turban. It is designed to hold 20,000 worshipers in the initial phase, which can later expand to accommodate 60,000," Basuki explained.

Basuki added that Gibran requested the construction team to accelerate their work while maintaining high standards. The goal is to have the mosque functional before the holy month begins. "The hope is that by Ramadan, the mosque can already be used for Tarawih prayers, followed by the Eid al-Fitr prayer," Basuki said.

Health now main reason for Malaysian haj deferrals, says minister

2 Jan 2026

Health issues are the top cause for haj deferrals in Malaysia, surpassing financial reasons, with the government aiming to fully use the annual quota.

BACHOK: Health issues are now the leading cause for Malaysian pilgrims deferring their haj pilgrimage, surpassing financial constraints.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan said health and personal factors are the primary reasons, with financial concerns now ranking third.

He stated that only 18% of pilgrims have deferred so far this year, a significant drop from approximately 50% in previous years.

“This follows the improvement initiatives implemented by Lembaga Tabung Haji,” he told reporters after a housing handover event in Kampung Aman, Kandis.

Zulkifli emphasised that health screening is a mandatory condition to ensure a safe pilgrimage in the Holy Land.

The government will ensure Malaysia’s haj quota is fully utilised, with appeals open until Ramadan to fill any vacancies.

He said quotas from deferred pilgrims will be offered to the next eligible candidates according to existing rules.

Lembaga Tabung Haji will issue further announcements on haj offers and appeals periodically.

Malaysia’s haj quota for this year remains at 31,600 pilgrims, as set by the Saudi government.

Inqilab Moncho resumes blockade at Shahbagh

Jan 3, 2026

Inqilab Moncho yesterday resumed its blockade at Shahbagh, demanding a speedy trial over the killing of its slain spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi.

Ahead of Juma prayers, the platform called on mosques across the country to offer special prayers seeking justice for Hadi's murder.

After the prayers, protesters brought out a procession from the Dhaka University Central Mosque before occupying the Shahbagh intersection.

Addressing a rally at Shahbagh, Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of Inqilab Moncho, warned that the platform would launch a movement demanding the government's resignation if the trial is not completed within the stipulated timeframe.

He said Inqilab Moncho had set a 30-working-day deadline for the government, with 22 days remaining.

"If the state fails to maintain law and order and its intelligence agencies cannot act, we do not want such a helpless authority ruling the country," he said.

He further demanded that by the seventh of the month, the killers and those behind the murder be identified and a charge sheet submitted.

Jaber also announced that once the trial formally begins, Inqilab Moncho will launch a public campaign ahead of the elections to inform voters whom they should and should not support.

He said the platform would reach out to "pro-Bangladesh" political and cultural organisations today and tomorrow to seek solidarity in demanding justice for Hadi's killing.

He also said on January 7, demonstrations would be held in front of Bangladesh High Commissions in at least 100 countries, demanding justice for Hadi.

The blockade programme began last Friday. On Monday night, protesters temporarily withdrew from the intersection and shifted to an online campaign due to a cold wave.

The programme was later postponed following the death and funeral of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

Nalcity launch terminal in Jhalakathi renamed after Sharif Osman Hadi

Jan 2, 2026

Nalcity launch terminal in Jhalakathi has been renamed after Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho and a frontline figure of the July uprising, who was killed after being shot by assailants in Dhaka's Paltan area on December 12 last year.

Shipping Adviser Brig Gen (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain inaugurated the plaque "Shaheed Sharif Osman bin Hadi Launch Ghat" at Nalchity upazila in Jhalakathi district this afternoon.

While speaking to local journalists at the event, Sakhawat said that the home ministry is working tirelessly to apprehend Hadi's killers, as numerous witnesses and pieces of evidence are emerging.

"I hope that by the middle of this month, more details will come to light," he said, emphasising that the government is taking the matter very seriously.

The killers of Hadi would be tracked down and brought to justice, even if they had fled to neighbouring countries, he added.

An MP aspirant from Dhaka-8, Hadi suffered a critical head injury on December 12 last year after being shot by assailants in Dhaka's Paltan area.

After receiving initial treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Evercare Hospital, he was airlifted to Singapore on December 15 for advanced medical care.

He passed away at Singapore General Hospital on December 18.

Protest, vandalism at Ctg’s Shah Amanat Airport

Jan 2, 2026

Passengers of multiple Biman Bangladesh Airlines flights faced severe hardship at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram after their flights were diverted due to dense fog.

Frustration over the lack of food for more than six hours sparked protests, during which some airport chairs were vandalised.

Airport sources said that between 3:00am and 4:00am early today, three flights from Delhi, Muscat, and Kuwait landed at Shah Amanat. Over a thousand passengers were on board these flights.

Despite the long wait, no food was provided, and the flights eventually returned to Dhaka in the morning and afternoon.

The prolonged lack of arrangements angered the passengers, who protested Biman Bangladesh Airlines' mismanagement, leading to the damage of airport property. The incident caused embarrassment for airport authorities, with passengers demanding a proper investigation and accountability.

Shah Amanat International Airport's Public Relations Officer, Engineer Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil, said the passengers became impatient due to the long wait and absence of food. Some chairs were damaged during the protest, but security personnel eventually brought the situation under control.
