“If A Day Comes When I Must Wear A Skull Cap For Votes, I’d Rather Cut Off My Head. I’m An Unapologetic Hindu: BJP MP
Nov 7, 2025

Union minister Bandi Sanjay sparked controversy during a poll rally, urging Hindus to unite and accusing Congress and AIMIM of appeasement politics
----------
HYDERABAD: Union minister of state for home Bandi Sanjay on Thursday sparked controversy during a poll campaign rally in Hyderabad’s Jubilee Hills constituency, where he called for Hindus to unite ahead of the November 11 by-election and accused the Congress and AIMIM of appeasement politics.
Addressing supporters, Sanjay declared, “If a day comes when I must wear a skull cap for votes, I’d rather cut off my head. I’m an unapologetic Hindu — I won’t insult other faiths by faking a namaz. Even Muslim leaders like Azharuddin and MIM didn’t wear it. But CM Revanth Reddy and the Congress candidate did — just for votes. Does CM have the courage to ask Azharuddin to chant Vakratunda Mahakaya? Or take Owaisi to Bhagyalakshmi temple and make him sing a song for Ammavaru to win Hindu votes?”
The remarks came a day after chief minister A Revanth Reddy said at a campaign event that “only Congress can protect Muslims” and “if Congress exists, then only Muslims exist.” The BRS has since filed a complaint with the State Election Commission, alleging that the CM’s comments violated the model code of conduct.
Sanjay further alleged that the AIMIM and Congress were “working in tandem to turn Telangana into an Islamic state” and urged Hindus to form a “single vote-bank” in response. “Both BRS and Congress target minorities who vote en masse for one party. Why can’t the majority community form a single vote-bank? This will be a game-changer,” he said.
Before the event, tensions rose as police initially denied permission for the rally, but Sanjay and other BJP leaders later produced clearance documents, allowing the event to proceed. Telangana BJP chief N Ramchander Rao and candidate Lankala Deepak Reddy also joined Sanjay on stage.
The minister accused AIMIM of having a “history of violence,” saying, “I am not trying to create tension or instigate anyone, but who attacked the cow protection activists recently? Who assaulted a DCP-level police officer in Hyderabad? All are linked to AIMIM. If you want peace in your life and business, please stay united.”
Sanjay dismissed pre-poll surveys as “fake,” saying, “If they’re so confident, why did they try to stop my rally? This is the time for us to stand united.” He also coined the terms “Owai-Re tax” (Asaduddin Owaisi–Revanth) and “Owai-K tax” (Owaisi–KTR), urging voters to reject both.
Crediting the BJP for “ending the feudal rule” of the BRS, he added, “I feel disappointed that the saffron flag wasn’t unfurled on the Charminar — we should have won the assembly elections. So, please help us secure victory in the Jubilee Hills bypoll.”
Taking a dig at BRS working president KT Rama Rao’s recent claim that K. Chandrasekhar Rao would return as CM in 500 days, Sanjay quipped, “How can KCR become CM again when he doesn’t even step out of his farmhouse? The BJP is on the streets, fighting for the people.”
He concluded by outlining his campaign plans in Rahmat Nagar, which he referred to as “Meenakshipuram,” saying, “I know you call it by another name, but it is not that — it is Meenakshi Nagar.”

Humza Yousaf, Former First Minister Of Scotland, Says Muslims Are Experiencing What Jews Did In 1930s Germany
6 NOV 2025

Humza Yousaf will address an audience in Washington DC (Image: PA)
------------
Humza Yousaf has claimed Muslims in the US and UK are experiencing something similar to Jews in 1930s Germany.
The former Scottish first minister has ditched Holyrood to spend time in America this week where he will address an audience at Georgetown University in Washington DC.
He said that conspiracy theories and lies told about Muslims today are "hauntingly reminiscent" of the language used about Jewish people by the Nazis and there has been a "frightening rise" in Islamophobia on both sides of the Atlantic in recent months.
The ex-SNP leader pointed out the UK had seen mosques targeted with arson attacks, and Muslim graves desecrated. He also blasted the 150,000 people who attended the Unite the Kingdom march in London, which was organised by Tommy Robinson, who Mr Yousaf describes as a "proud Islamophobe".
Mr Yousaf, who has taken a firmly anti-Israel stance in relation to the war in Gaza, also said there had been "open Islamophobia" from senior politicians in the USA, including against the mayor-elect of New York City, Zohran Mamdani.
He said: "We are seeing a frightening rise of anti-Muslim hatred in both the US and UK.
"In recent months, in the UK, we have seen arson attacks targeting mosques; Muslim children’s graves desecrated; Muslim women and men targeted with violence; and 150,000 people in London marching behind proud Islamophobe and serial criminal, Tommy Robinson.
"In the US, we have witnessed open Islamophobia from senior politicians against Muslims in public life, including most recently against mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.
"Many Muslims in the US tell me they are living in fear, and worry about their rights as citizens being stripped away from them without notice or due cause.
"The accusations, conspiracy theories and downright lies that are told about Muslims today, are hauntingly reminiscent of the language used against Jewish people in Europe in the 1930s.
“We know the far-right forces across the Atlantic are supporting each other and sharing disinformation. It is therefore incumbent on those, both Muslim and non-Muslim, who abhor Islamophobia, to stand together, united in defiance of hatred. We must get organised and mobilise across borders to tackle this growing threat."
Mr Yousaf's trip to the US has proven controversial. We told how he is scheduled to address the Muslim Public Affairs Council, a group that initially refused to condemn the October 7 Hamas terror attack on Israel and has spread conspiracy theories about "Zionist extremists" infiltrating parts of the US Government.
He was accused of abandoning Scotland's Jewish community by choosing to work with the group.
Mr Yousaf never responded to our requests for comment, but on Wednesday said: "I will be working with allies in the fight against anti-Muslim hatred both at home and in the US to create a transatlantic alliance to tackle Islamophobia.
"We cannot be passive as the threat of the far-right continues to rise, if we allow such hatred to go unchecked, the consequences could be devastating."

‘Tangible progress’ being made on Saudi Arabia’s first large-scale nuclear power plant
November 06, 2025

Second Saudi International Conference on Nuclear Power Engineering Opens at KFUPM. (SPA)
------------
RIYADH: “Tangible progress” is being made on the project to establish Saudi Arabia’s first large-scale nuclear power plant, a member of the Kingdom’s atomic energy body said on Thursday.
Sharaf Al-Sharif, KACARE’s Nuclear Energy Technology Development and Innovation Sector head, delivered a keynote speech at second Saudi International Conference on Nuclear Power Engineering, known as SCOPE, at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
He noted that the Kingdom is making remarkable progress in developing an integrated energy system aligned with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
He said that the power plant project is being developed with technical specifications finalized in accordance with the highest international standards.
This milestone, he pointed out, will strengthen national energy security and stimulate local industry.
The SCOPE conference was held under the auspices of the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy.
He added that KACARE was preparing for the next phase by assessing technologies related to small modular reactors, given their flexibility and potential to provide low-emission solutions for electricity generation, water desalination, and hydrogen production.
He emphasized that the Kingdom’s entry into this field would be backed by comprehensive national capabilities in human talent, technology, and industry.
Al-Sharif added that the Kingdom’s journey in nuclear energy began with confidence and will continue toward regional and global leadership in peaceful and advanced nuclear technologies.
He reaffirmed that human capital was at the core of Saudi Arabia’s nuclear program.
He noted that KACARE continued to invest in developing national expertise through scholarships, training initiatives, and research programs, while strengthening regulatory and operational competencies in the vital sector.

Release of Sami Hamdi, Reject Anti-Muslim Hate in U.S. Policy
November 6, 2025

The California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CA), along with 257 faith-based, civil rights, immigrants’ rights, and community organizations, today sent a joint letter to members of Congress and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio calling on them to demand the immediate release of British Muslim journalist Sami Hamdi from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention.
Hamdi was detained by immigration officials at the San Francisco International Airport on Oct. 26 in an apparent response to his criticism of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, and at the urging of anti-Muslim, pro-Israel extremists. He remains in ICE custody in McFarland, California.
The letter also urged members of Congress and Secretary Rubio to reject anti-Muslim hate in all its forms and to denounce “Israel First” extremists, including Laura Loomer, who publicly took credit for Hamdi’s abduction and claimed to have influenced high-ranking officials within the Department of State and Department of Homeland Security to act against Palestinian and Muslim travelers.
In a statement, CAIR-CA CEO Hussam Ayloush said:
“We are proud to join more than 250 organizations in calling on our Congressional representatives and Secretary Rubio to demand the immediate release of Sami Hamdi from ICE custody. Sami’s unjust detention is just one of countless examples of the dangerous escalation of Islamophobia nationwide and the Trump administration’s ongoing attempts to undermine constitutional protections for students, journalists, educators, and anyone else who publicly criticizes Israel.
“Freedom of speech and press are pillars of our democracy, and Congress cannot continue to sit idly by as ‘Israel First,’ anti-Muslim extremists use bigoted conspiracy theories to influence immigration and international policies and punish journalists for criticizing a foreign government’s genocide and human rights abuses.
“We urge our members of Congress and Secretary Rubio to join our call for Sami’s immediate release from ICE custody, denounce anti-Muslim hate in all its forms, especially in U.S. policy, and uphold the law to protect human rights and freedom of the press.”
CAIR-CA is representing Hamdi alongside the Muslim Legal Fund and immigration attorney Hassan Ahmad of The HMA Law Firm. On Oct. 28, the organization filed a combined habeas petition and an emergency temporary restraining order to block the government from transferring Hamdi away from his legal team.
On Saturday, Nov. 1, a federal court issued an order blocking ICE from transferring Hamdi out of California while his case proceeds. In the order, the court stated that it believes Hamdi’s legal team has raised serious questions regarding whether his detention was retaliation for protected speech under the First Amendment. The judge also indicated that some form of court-ordered protection “may be appropriate” if ICE continues to hold him.
CAIR-CA continues to urge the community to call on their members of Congress to demand that ICE release Hamdi and that immigration officials make decisions about visitor and immigration visas based on facts, not bigoted conspiracy theories.
CAIR-CA is a chapter of CAIR, America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

Lebanon lifts travel ban on Qaddafi’s son and reduces bail to $900,000 paving way for his release
November 06, 2025

Lebanese authorities lifted a travel ban and reduced bail for the son of late Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi paving the way for his release, judicial officials and one of his lawyers said Thursday. (File)
-----------
BEIRUT: Lebanese authorities lifted a travel ban and reduced bail for the son of late Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi paving the way for his release, judicial officials and one of his lawyers said Thursday.
The decision by the country’s judicial authorities came days after a Libyan delegation visited Lebanon and made progress in talks for the release of Hannibal Qaddafi.
In mid-October, a Lebanese judge ordered Qaddafi’s release on $11 million bail, but banned him from traveling outside Lebanon. His lawyers said at the time that he didn’t have enough to pay that amount, and sought permission for him to leave the country.
On Thursday, his bail was reduced to 80 billion Lebanese pounds (about $900,000) and the travel ban was lifted allowing him to leave the country once he pays the bail, three judicial officials and one security official said.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said Qaddafi has decided to leave Lebanon once he is released. They added that his family will follow him later.
“We have just been informed and will discuss the matter,” one of Qaddafi’s lawyers, Charbel Milad Al-Khoury, told The Associated Press when asked about the decision.
Lebanese authorities have been holding Qaddafi for 10 years without trial for allegedly withholding information about a missing Lebanese cleric.
Detained in Lebanon since 2015, Qaddafi is accused of withholding information about the fate of Lebanese Shiite cleric Moussa Al-Sadr who disappeared during a trip to Libya in 1978, although the late leader’s son was less than 3 years old at the time.
Libya formally requested Hannibal Qaddafi’s release in 2023, citing his deteriorating health after he went on a hunger strike to protest his detention without trial.
Qaddafi had been living in exile in Syria with his Lebanese wife, Aline Skaf, and children until he was abducted in 2015 and brought to Lebanon by Lebanese militants who were demanding information about Al-Sadr.
Lebanese police later announced they had seized Qaddafi from the northeastern Lebanese city of Baalbek where he was being held, and he has been held ever since in a Beirut jail, where he faced questioning over Al-Sadr’s disappearance.
The case has been a long-standing sore point in Lebanon. The cleric’s family believes he may still be alive in a Libyan prison, though most Lebanese presume he is dead. He would be 96 years old.
Al-Sadr, who went missing with companions Abbas Badreddine and Mohammed Yacoub, was the founder of a Shiite political and military group that took part in the long Lebanese civil war that began in 1975, largely pitting Muslims against Christians.
Muammar Qaddafi was killed by opposition fighters during Libya’s 2011 uprising-turned-civil war, ending his four-decade rule of the North African country.

BJP To Up Its “Vote Jihad” Campaign As A Response To ‘Vote Chori’ Claims
SHUBHANGI KHAPRE
November 6, 2025
The BJP will be upping its “vote jihad” campaign in Maharashtra as a response to the Opposition’s allegations regarding electoral lists in the state ahead of the local polls, with Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi’s ‘H-Files’ press conference on Haryana Wednesday expected to give them a fillip.
“We took the anti-Constitution narrative of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) lightly in last year’s Lok Sabha polls and paid a heavy price. It served as an eye-opener. Now, we are determined to counter every issue effectively, with our ‘vote jihad’ campaign,” a BJP poll manager told The Indian Express.
The BJP won only nine of the state’s 48 Lok Sabha seats last year, as against the 23 it won in 2019.
To boost its vote jihad campaign, sources said the BJP will deploy workers at the taluka level across the 288 Assembly constituencies of the state, with Cabinet minister and former Mumbai chief Ashish Shelar to play a key role.
“Why are the MVA and the MNS (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) only talking about duplicate votes regarding the Marathi Manoos or Hindus? Why are they silent on Muslims?” Shelar told The Indian Express on Wednesday, alleging “duplicate voting” by Muslims in Karjat-Jamkhed, Mumbra, Kalra, Malad West and Dharavi.
According to Shelar, “Statistics show at least 10.6 lakh duplicate Muslim votes across the state’s 288 seats.”
State BJP chief Ravindra Chavan said the party was only countering the Opposition’s narrative in “a language they understand”. “When allegations of vote chori surfaced, BJP leaders were among the first to acknowledge that revision of electoral rolls was required. The Opposition is only concerned about pushing a fake narrative to tarnish the BJP’s image,” he said, questioning its protests against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls being rolled out nationwide by the Election Commission.
Navanth Ban, BJP media cell in-charge, said the BJP’s politics and campaigns are “development driven” but it was “important to show a mirror” to the Opposition. “We are just pointing to their discriminatory politics of Muslim appeasement,” he said.
A BJP leader said that the Satyacha Morcha (rally for truth) held by the Opposition recently, in which the Raj Thackeray-led MNS participated, prompted the party to accelerate its “love jihad” campaign. At the rally, the Opposition alleged a “State Election Commission (SEC)-BJP nexus” to rig the local polls.
Congress state chief Harshvardhan Sapkal said its return to “vote jihad” allegations showed the BJP “thrives on creating hatred among people”.
“The RSS/BJP is anti-Muslim and anti-Dalit. They work on their communal agenda to create conflict and divide society,” Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) chief Prakash Ambedkar said.
What is “vote jihad”
In 2021-22, right-wing outfits like the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, along with religious heads united under the Sakal Hindu Samaj banner, launched a campaign to unite Hindus, dubbed by it as “love jihad”.
In the run-up to last year’s Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among others, hinted at a campaign to drive a wedge between Hindu voters. If Modi gave slogans like “Ek hain toh safe hain (We are safe if united)”, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath warned the people, “Batenge toh katenge (Divided we fall)”.
After the 2024 Lok Sabha setback in Maharashtra surprised the NDA, Fadnavis blamed “vote jihad” for the BJP’s diminished tally in Maharashtra. “Despite retaining its vote share, the BJP lost seats due to vote jihad. People of a particular community united against Hindus in at least 14 constituencies,” he said. He gave the example of the Dhule seat, claiming that while the BJP candidate led in all five Assembly segments falling under it, he was defeated as Muslims ensured a 100% turnout of the community’s voters in Malegaon.
As the politics of “vote chori” and duplication heats up in Maharashtra, State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare on Tuesday said the poll body has devised a mechanism to tackle the issues. “When a voter arrives at a polling station, a double star will be marked on a few of them. This will be a sign for polling officials to rectify the identity of the voters. Such voters will be required to sign a declaration that they are not casting their vote elsewhere,” he added.
The first phase of the local body polls will involve 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats. They will vote on December 2, with results to be announced a day later.

Vande Mataram Song Row: PM Modi Says Key Stanzas Removed In 1937; Congress President Hits Out At BJP, RSS
Nov 7, 2025
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday accused Congress of “removing important stanzas” from the original Vande Mataram while adopting it during party's 1937 Faizabad session. PM Modi said that the decision not only “broke the song into pieces” but also “sowed the seeds of partition.”
Speaking at an event marking 150 years of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, PM Modi said, “Unfortunately, in 1937, important stanzas were removed from the original Vande Bharat song. Vande Bharat was broken into pieces. This also sowed the seeds of partition. Why was this injustice done? The same divisive ideology remains a challenge for the nation.”
The Prime Minister said the song continues to inspire generations and called upon the youth to remain focused on building a Viksit Bharat despite attempts to mislead them. “On our way to Viksit Bharat, we will find people who misguide us. People with a pessimistic outlook will try to sow doubt in our minds. In such times, Vande Mataram inspires us. How can a mother who has crores of children be weak? Bharat Mata has 140 crore children, has 280 crore arms, and more than 60% are young. We have the world’s biggest demographic advantage. Nothing is impossible for us,” he said.
Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of saying those celebrating Vande Mataram’s anniversary have never sung it in their offices or shakhas.
“It is deeply ironic that those who today claim to be the self-proclaimed guardians of nationalism — the RSS and the BJP — have never sung Vande Mataram or our National Anthem Jana Gana Mana in their shakhas or offices. Instead, they continue to sing Namaste Sada Vatsale, a song glorifying their organisations, not the nation,” Kharge said in an official statement.
He added, “Since its founding in 1925, the RSS has avoided Vande Mataram, despite its universal reverence. Not once in its texts or literature does the song find mention.”
Kharge also drew a contrast with Congress traditions, noting that Vande Mataram has been part of every party meeting and event since 1986. “The Congress Party takes immense pride in both Vande Mataram and Jana Gana Mana. Both songs are sung with reverence at every Congress gathering and event, symbolising India’s unity and pride,” he said.
‘RSS avoided national symbols, supported Britishers’
Continuing his criticism, Kharge accused the Sangh of having “stood with the British” during India’s independence movement. “It is a well-known fact that the RSS and Sangh Parivar supported the British against Indians in the National Movement, did not raise the National Flag for 52 years, abused the Constitution of India, burnt effigies of Bapu and Babasaheb Ambedkar, and, in the words of Sardar Patel, were involved in Gandhiji’s assassination,” Kharge said.
Recalling the song’s history, the Congress president said the party had been the “proud flagbearer of Vande Mataram” since the late 19th century. “It was during the 1896 session of the Congress in Calcutta, under the leadership of the then Congress President Rahmatullah Sayani, that Vande Mataram was sung publicly for the first time by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. That moment infused new life into the freedom struggle,” Kharge said.
He added that Vande Mataram emerged as a song of unity and defiance against the British policy of divide and rule. “The Congress understood that the British Empire’s manipulation of religious, caste, and regional identities was designed to break India’s unity. Against this, Vande Mataram rose as a song of unflinching strength, uniting all Indians in devotion to Bharat Mata,” he said.
‘Vande Mataram’ shattered British propaganda
Recalling the circumstances under which Vande Mataram was written, PM Modi said Bankim Chandra Chatterjee composed it when India was struggling under British rule and economic exploitation. “When Bankim Babu composed Vande Mataram, India was far removed from its golden era. Foreign invaders, their attacks and the exploitative policies of the British had left our country in the clutches of poverty and starvation. Even in those dire circumstances, Bankim Babu called for a prosperous India,” he said.
“During that period of slavery, the British justified their rule by portraying India as inferior and backward. The first line (Sujalam, Suphalam) completely destroyed that propaganda. Vande Mataram not only became the song of independence, but also presented that prosperous, fruitful dream of what an independent India would be like,” PM Modi added.
‘Vande Mataram’ is timeless
The Prime Minister quoted Rabindranath Tagore’s remarks on Bankim Chandra’s Anandamath, describing it as more than just a novel. “Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore once said that Bankim Chandra’s ‘Anandmath’ is not just a novel. It is a dream of an independent India. Every word written by Bankim Babu had deep meaning. This song was created during the time of slavery, but it is not limited to that time. The Vande Bharat song is relevant in every era. One-fourth share of global GDP was with India just a few centuries ago,” he said.
‘Nation as mother, nation as strength’
Highlighting India’s civilisational ethos, PM Modi said the idea of the nation as a mother has been deeply rooted in Indian tradition. “Our Vedas have taught us that the nation is our mother and we are her children. We have worshipped our nation in this form since the Vedic period. The emotion that a nation can be a mother can be surprising for those who view nations as a geopolitical entity. But India is different. Here, a nation is also the one that gives birth and the one that nurtures. She is also a destroyer if a child is in danger. Because of this emotion of considering the nation as mother and a form of Shakti, mahila shakti was forefront in building the nation,” PM Modi said.
He added, “The concept of India is the ideological force behind it. The sense of one's independent existence. Only from the depths of the heart and the infinity of emotions does a composition like Vande Mataram emerge. In that period of slavery, Vande Mataram became the proclamation of this resolve. And that proclamation was of India's independence. The chains of slavery would be broken by the hands of Mother India, and her children would become the makers of their own destiny.”
‘A historic day’
Calling the day a moment of national pride, PM Modi said, “Today, November 7, is a historic day. We are having a grand celebration of 150 years of the creation of Vande Mataram. This event will generate new energy among crores of Indians. My greeting to every citizen on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram.”
BJP targets Nehru-era Congress
Earlier in the day, BJP spokesperson C.R. Kesavan accused former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru of committing a “historic sin” by truncating stanzas from Vande Mataram that hailed Goddess Durga during the 1937 Faizpur session of the Congress. He claimed Nehru’s letter to Subhash Chandra Bose from that year described the hymn as unsuitable for adoption as a national song.
Kesavan alleged that the Congress “deliberately removed” the Durga stanzas to appease communal sentiments. He also drew a link between Nehru’s position and Rahul Gandhi’s recent remarks on Shakti, calling it a continuation of a “Hindu Virodhi mentality.”
The government has announced a year-long celebration to mark the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’, including the release of a commemorative stamp and coin.
‘Vande Mataram’, composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, was first published in 1875 in the journal ‘Bangadarshan’ and later included in his novel ‘Anandamath’. The song was set to music by Rabindranath Tagore and became a rallying cry during India’s freedom struggle.

SIR sets Bengal's Muslim marriage register ringing
Nov 7, 2025
KOLKATA: Minority-dominated districts in Bengal bordering Bangladesh are now witnessing an unusual trend - married Muslim couples, who read their vows under Islamic law, are rushing to register their marriages under Section 16 of Special Marriage Act, 1954. According to data accessed by TOI, 1,130 Muslim couples applied to register marriages in Bengal between Nov 2024 and Oct 2025.
More than half these applications (609) were made between July and Oct, when Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls was underway in neighbouring Bihar. Bengal govt officials linked the spike over the four-month period to increasing anxiety over SIR.
Many of these Muslim couples wanted to acquire an additional citizenship document in view of the impending SIR rollout in Bengal, officials at the Bengal Marriage Registrar General office said.
Most of these applications were received from North Dinajpur (199) and Malda (197), which share their borders with Bihar, followed by Murshidabad (185) and Cooch Behar (97). All four districts also share their borders with Bangladesh. Kolkata was at the lower end of the data sheet with only 24 such applications. Jhargram (1) and Kalimpong (2) recorded the least number of such applications.
According to sources, Muslim marriages in rural Bengal are usually conducted under The Bengal Muhammadan Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1876. For this, the state gives licences to Muhammadan Marriage and Divorce Registrars (MMRs), who are mostly kazis.
"Marriage and divorce certificates issued by the kazis are legally valid, but lack uniformity, with MMRs following their personal formats. The address verification process is also vague. Due to this, multiple govt and private bodies do not accept these kazi-issued certificates as valid marriage documents. The certificates that are issued under Special Marriage Act, not only weed out such problems but are the most acceptable marriage document anywhere in India. These are also considered as citizenship proof in many cases," an officer said.
Another senior official pointed out that marriage and divorce registrations for Muslims were so far done under the 1876 Act because the process was simpler, allowing individuals to quickly marry, divorce and remarry.
"While polygamy is banned, because this Act vests a lot of power in the kazis, it can be manipulated to end a marriage quickly and allow remarriage, bypassing the rigours of legal scrutiny or court cases. The Special Marriage Act, however, is more stringent and allows only one marriage at a time," the official explained.

Muslims can't recite it: Abu Azmi declines BJP MLA's Vande Mataram recitation offer
Nov 6, 2025
Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi on Thursday declined an invitation from Mumbai BJP president Ameet Satam to join a mass recital of the national song Vande Mataram near his residence, saying Muslims cannot recite the song because some verses are tied to worship and prayer.
Satam had invited Azmi to the event, scheduled for Friday morning near the SP leader's residence in Mumbai, as part of the Maharashtra government's week-long celebrations marking 150 years of Vande Mataram.
Sharing the invitation on X, Satam wrote, "You are cordially invited. Vande Mataram is an embodiment of nationalism, unity and inspiration. You are invited to recite the song along with others."
In a detailed response, Azmi thanked Satam for the invitation but said that reciting Vande Mataram was not permissible for Muslims as some of its verses are linked to "worship and prayer", which are part of the Hindu faith.
"Just as you cannot join me in offering Namaz, I cannot sing Vande Mataram. The Supreme Court has clarified that compelling any person to sing a national song violates their fundamental right to freedom of religion and conscience," Azmi wrote.
The MLA from Mankhurd-Shivajinagar, who has earlier opposed making Vande Mataram compulsory in schools, said that showing respect for the song does not mean it must be recited by all.
"Whenever Vande Mataram is sung in the Assembly, we stand shoulder to shoulder with you and show full respect. We sing Jana Gana Mana along with you, but you will not tell the public that a Muslim cannot sing Vande Mataram. Instead, you brand them as 'anti-national'. This is extremely condemnable and petty politics," he wrote.
Azmi also accused the BJP of using nationalism for political gain ahead of the Mumbai civic polls. "You want Muslims to sing Vande Mataram, you do not want a mayor with the surname 'Khan', you want to send those who read the Quran to Pakistan, and you label them as 'traitors'," he said, adding that it was "unfortunate" that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was "silently watching" such politics.
He further said that while Vande Mataram holds significance for Hindus, Islam does not permit acts of worship outside its own faith. "Vande Mataram contains expressions of prayer that reflect Hindu beliefs. Islam gives importance to respecting one's mother, but it does not permit prostrating before her," Azmi had earlier said, reiterating that no one should be forced to take part in religious expressions that conflict with their faith.
The SP leader added that Vande Mataram was never opposed by Muslims. "You cannot buy our patriotism. Vande Mataram was never, is not, and will never be against us. Our Hindu brothers sing it with pride and will continue to do so. I only request that you not use it as a political tool to gain power, because power never lasts forever," he wrote.
The Maharashtra government has asked all schools to sing the full version of Vande Mataram from October 31 to November 7 to mark its 150th anniversary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the year-long commemoration in New Delhi on Friday and release a commemorative stamp and coin to mark the occasion.

Search operation in J&K’s Chatroo to track & kill ultras
Nov 7, 2025
JAMMU: Security forces on Thursday launched a massive cordon-and-search operation in the forests of Chatroo in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district to track and kill terrorists, a day after an Agniveer sustained minor injuries in a brief gunfight with ultras in the area.
Official sources said a joint team of the Army, J&K Police and Special Operations Group were combing the area to hunt down the suspects, believed to be Pakistani nationals. “So far, no contact has been established, but the searches are in progress. Additional reinforcements have been rushed to the area to fortify the cordon and plug possible escape routes. Drones and sniffer dogs have been roped in to assist the ground troops,” an official said.
In April, security forces had gunned down three Jaish-e-Mohammad ultras in a two-day-long anti-terror operation at Naidgam in Chatroo area and seized a huge cache of arms, ammunition, and explosives, along with Pak-manufactured caps, medicines, and first aid items.

Ealing Council Joins Other London Councils To Back Campaign To Challenge Islamophobia And Hate
By Leslie Bunder
6 November, 2025
Ealing Council has joined other London councils, including Barnet and Haringey, in marking Islamophobia Awareness Month (IAM) this November by reaffirming its commitment to standing against hate and promoting unity across its seven towns.
The annual campaign, which was launched in 2012, aims to raise awareness of Islamophobia and celebrate the positive contributions of Muslim communities to British life.
This year’s national theme, “Flip The Script”, calls on people and organisations to challenge stereotypes and counter misinformation about Muslims. In outlining this year’s theme, the organisers said: “We’re calling everyone to challenge narratives that misrepresent Muslims, reframe conversations that are based on stereotypes or assumptions and platform stories that showcase the positive contributions.”
The organisers added: “The aim is to encourage people to move beyond false narratives and highlight the real, lived experiences of Muslims — celebrating achievements, confronting discrimination, and challenging misconceptions. Creating a fairer, more inclusive society for all.”
The campaign encourages schools, workplaces, councils and community groups to host events and discussions that promote inclusion and understanding.
Recent figures cited by IAM show that, for the year ending March 2025, Muslims were the target in 44% of all recorded religiously motivated hate crimes in England and Wales – a 19% increase compared with the previous year. Organisers say this underlines the continued need for education, engagement and positive dialogue across communities.
Locally, Ealing Council said it is working with communities and faith leaders to promote inclusion and tackle hate in the borough.
Councillor Jasbir Anand, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for tackling crime and antisocial behaviour, told EALING.NEWS: “We work closely with Muslim leaders, mosques, and community organisations throughout the year to build a safe, welcoming and inclusive borough where everyone feels they belong.
“This month is not only a time to raise awareness about the impact of Islamophobia, prejudice, and discrimination but also a time to recognise and celebrate the enormous contributions of our Muslim communities – their rich culture, faith, and traditions that continue to shape and strengthen Ealing borough.
“Ealing is one of the most diverse boroughs in the country, and that diversity is our greatest strength. It’s what makes our borough so vibrant, caring, and resilient. We will always stand together against hate and champion the values of respect, unity, and celebration that define who we are as a community.”
Speaking to EALING.NEWS, Councillor Gary Malcolm, leader of Ealing Liberal Democrats, added: “Liberal Democrats have observed locally and across the country an increased amount of hate crime targeted at a number of groups including Muslims. I will continue to link in and work with a number of groups to help reduce hate crime and discrimination in our borough. Liberal Democrats see much positiveness in our borough’s diversity.”
As part of its ongoing work to address discrimination and promote community safety, Ealing Council said it is developing a new hate crime strategy. The strategy aims to ensure that all forms of hate crime – including those based on religion, race, gender, sexuality or disability – are effectively tackled while victims receive appropriate support.
Residents are being invited to take part in a public consultation to share their experiences and views before the survey closes on 31 December 2025.

Anti-black racism 'baked' into Met, review finds
7 NOV 2025
James Chater
Discrimination against black people is "baked" into the leadership, culture and governance of the Metropolitan Police, an internal review has found.
The independently commissioned review, authored by Dr Shereen Daniels, surveyed 40 years of evidence of how racism had affected black communities, as well as black officers and staff.
Baroness Doreen Lawrence, the mother of murdered black teenager Stephen Lawrence, said that she welcomed the review but it contained "nothing I did not already know".
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said the "powerful" report "calls out that further systemic, structural, cultural change is needed".
The review, commissioned from the consultancy HR Rewired, concluded that darker-skinned Met staff were "labelled confrontational" while lighter-skinned employees might receive quicker empathy and leniency.
Dr Shereen Daniels said that systemic racism was "not a matter of perception", adding that "true accountability begins with specificity".
"The same systems that sustain racial harm against black people also enable other forms of harm. Confronting this is not an act of exclusion but a necessary foundation for safety, fairness and justice for everyone," Dr Daniels said.
Baroness Lawrence said that discrimination "must be acknowledged, accepted and confronted in the Met", adding that racism was the reason why her son had been killed and why the police had "failed to find all of his killers".
She added: "The police must stop telling us that change is coming whilst we continue to suffer. That change must take place now."
Imran Khan KC, the Lawrence family's barrister, likewise said that the report's conclusions were "little surprise", adding that Sir Mark Rowley should resign if he did not "recognise, acknowledge and accept" its findings.
He added: "This Report lays out in shocking clarity that the time for talking is over, that promises to change can no longer be believed or relied on."
The report is the latest to highlight racism within Britain's biggest police force, after Louise Casey's 2023 review - commissioned after the murder of Sarah Everard - concluded that the Met was institutionally racist, misogynistic and homophobic.
Reviews conducted decades ago have criticised discrimination within the Met - including the 1999 Macpherson report that called the force "institutionally racist" after the mishandling of Stephen Lawrence's case.
Earlier this year, secret BBC filming found serving Met Police officers calling for immigrants to be shot and revelling in the use of force.
Several officers have since been sacked, after Sir Mark Rowley pledged to be "ruthless" in getting rid of officers who are unfit to serve.
The president of the National Black Police Association, Andy George, said Friday's report was the latest in a long line of reviews "which have highlighted the same issues again and again", and action to address them had not been taken.
"There is a culture of denial, dismissal, of almost waiting for the spotlight to be on - and as soon as the spotlight goes, then it's business as normal," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
He criticised Sir Mark's response to the report: "He said the same things in Baroness Casey's review, he said the same things after Panorama… the words are fine, what we're not seeing is action to back that up."
Following the publication of the latest report, Sir Mark Rowley said: "London is a unique global city, and the Met will only truly deliver policing by consent when it is inclusive and anti-racist."
He added that the force would "go after the patterns of discrimination that show up in our operational work, and within the organisation by identifying and addressing their root causes".

NATO now outproducing Russia in ammo – Rutte
6 Nov, 2025
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has claimed that the military bloc is now outproducing Russia in ammunition, citing dozens of new production lines and the highest output “in decades.”
Rutte made the remarks while speaking at the NATO-Industry Forum in Bucharest on Thursday, where he praised the members’ pledge to hike defense expenditure to 5% of GDP by 2035. He claimed that it still would not be enough to counter what he again described as the Russian “threat.”
Moscow has repeatedly said it has no intention of attacking any NATO member states, dismissing such claims as “nonsense” and attributing them to Western officials’ attempts to justify increased military spending.
“We are already turning the tide on ammunition,” Rutte said. “Until recently, Russia was producing more ammunition than all NATO allies combined – but not anymore,” he claimed.
NATO allies are opening dozens of new production lines and expanding existing ones, Rutte said, adding that the bloc is “making more than we have done in decades” while urging further progress in air defense and drone interceptors.
Rutte has in the past repeatedly stated that Russia was ahead in the ammunition race with NATO. As recently as July, he told the New York Times that Moscow was producing three times more shells in three months than the US-led bloc did in a year.
Russia has ramped up its defense spending since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict. President Vladimir Putin has said arms production has risen significantly, with output of some weapon types growing nearly thirtyfold. In late June, Putin revealed that Russia is spending 13.5 trillion rubles ($151 billion) on defense – around 6.3% of GDP. He acknowledged that the figure is high and has fueled inflation, while adding that the US spent even more during past conflicts – 14% of GDP during the Korean War and 10% during the Vietnam War.
Moscow has repeatedly condemned what it calls the West’s “reckless militarization,” maintaining that no amount of Western military aid to Ukraine can change the course of the conflict and only serves to unnecessarily prolong the bloodshed.

Savvy Games Group signs MoU with HUMAIN to expand use of AI across operations
November 06, 2025
RIYADH: Savvy Games Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with HUMAIN, the Saudi-owned artificial intelligence company, to integrate AI systems into the gaming group’s operations.
The agreement announced this week sets the stage for both companies to explore the development of customized AI models.
It also gives Savvy access to HUMAIN’s cloud-based data centers and computing infrastructure, positioning the partnership as both a technology and capability-sharing arrangement between two Public Investment Fund portfolio firms.
“We are looking forward to working with HUMAIN to identify and unlock ways that would enhance the way we utilize AI at Savvy,” said Brian Ward, CEO of Savvy Games Group.
For HUMAIN, the deal comes shortly after the launch of HUMAIN ONE, its agentic AI operating system announced at the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh last month.
The company positions the system as a foundation for sector-specific AI deployment, including gaming — a field HUMAIN says is now entering a phase where AI can shape both productivity and creative output.
“Game development is one of the most exciting fields where the effective use of AI solutions can make a tangible impact on boosting both creativity and productivity,” said HUMAIN CEO Tareq Amin.
Savvy, which is backed by a $38 billion investment mandate from PIF, has been positioned as a key player in Saudi Arabia’s ambition to become a global gaming hub.
While most of the company’s public activity has focused on investments and industry consolidation, the MoU suggests a shift toward internal AI capability-building as the domestic gaming market matures.
HUMAIN, meanwhile, sits at the center of Saudi Arabia’s emerging sovereign AI stack, covering data centers, model training and AI solutions designed for both government and private-sector clients.
Its focus on building Arabic-trained large language models and sector-specific applications has aligned the company with national digital priorities, including localization of core technologies and talent development.
The partnership also reflects a broader strategy inside PIF to create interoperability across portfolio companies, particularly in digital infrastructure and emerging tech.
Rather than treating AI as a standalone product, the agreement signals a move toward shared platforms, shared data layers and unified technical standards — a direction Saudi policymakers have repeatedly stressed as part of Vision 2030’s digital economy agenda.
Neither company disclosed financial terms or a project timeline, but both confirmed that joint R&D initiatives are part of the scope, including experimentation with new AI-driven tools for future gaming projects.
If successfully executed, the agreement would make Savvy one of the first large-scale gaming entities in the region to operationalize AI beyond content recommendation and analytics — shifting it into areas such as automated workflows, talent systems and creative asset generation.

Salon des Arts highlights cultural exchange at French residence in Jeddah
AFSHAN AZIZ
November 06, 2025
JEDDAH: The first edition of Salon des Arts took place at the French Residence in Jeddah on Wednesday evening, bringing together art, music and conversation between Saudi and French artists.
The program featured live performances and visual studies that reflected the spirit of cultural exchange and highlighted the growing cultural cooperation between France and Saudi Arabia.
During the evening, the French Consulate in Jeddah announced the creation of a new community of former artists-in-residence at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris, an initiative supported by Saudi artists Zahra Bundakji and Danah Qari. The event also featured Saudi artists including Joud Fahmy, Zahiyah Al-Raddadi, Bricklab and Nour Gary.
French Consul General in Jeddah Mohamed Nehad said: “Many of the Saudi artists here have previously stayed in France as part of the residency program, which I like to compare to a startup cocoon, a space that equips artists with new tools, connects them with others around the world, and helps them grow and refine their skills.
“Gatherings like this are essential to reconnect with these artists, showcase their work at the Residence of France, and strengthen their ties with one another. The spirit of France has always been about connecting French artists with local talent to create together, to blend French and Saudi flavors, and to build something meaningful that reflects both cultures.”
He added: “The Saudi art scene today is incredibly young and full of energy. These artists inspire and energize us with their brilliant ideas, refilling our creative energy every time we meet.”
Cultural attache Quentin Richard described the event as a reflection of the ongoing artistic dialogue between both countries, saying: “The artistic residencies at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris and here in Jeddah illustrate the vitality of the dialogue between French and Saudi artists. They foster a dynamic of exchange built on creativity, mutual respect, and the shared discovery of our cultures.”
French group Oriki, whose members include Woz Kaly, Yann Saletes, Mourad Baitiche, Michel Teyssier and Khaled Baitiche, currently in residence at Hayy Cinema in collaboration with Saudi artist Salma Murad, also took part in the event.
New artistic residencies are set to begin in December in partnership with the Tariq Abdulhakim Museum and Athr Gallery.
Oriki vocalist Woz Kaly said: “Between the first visit and now, there’s an emotional connection to the territory, the community, and the artists. As long as there’s that emotional bond, you can create everything through art. During the event, we performed three songs that form part of our cine-concert project, each inspired by a different film scene.
“Even without the screen, the idea is for the audience to imagine the story through the music and connect with its emotion. It’s a preview of what we’ve been developing since arriving in Jeddah.”
For Bundakji, Salon des Arts offered the public a rare glimpse into the creative process itself.
“People know about the artist in the studio, but they never see what happens in there. They don’t see the research, they don’t see the ideas, they don’t see the experiments, the failures,” she said, adding the event allowed visitors to engage with the artistic process directly.
“Between that studio and that final work is a big space that’s where we can meet each other, share our ideas, that’s where friendships happen, that’s where community happens. I believe that is life itself, where people connect, where people talk about art, where we’re getting to know each other face to face, not just you seeing my work and my name on a title,” she explained.
She described the evening as a space where visitors could touch and experience the research behind each work, “a slice from everyone’s studio practice.”
Qari said: “I think it’s a beautiful space for people to come together and actually have a conversation about the life that imitates the art which imitates life. We all see each other’s work in exhibition, but we don’t really get to know what are the feelings behind these works.”
She added: “Whatever we create comes from something in our lives. It comes from stories, it comes from feelings, it comes from dreams, fears, failures. “It’s an intimate opportunity to create a genuine connection between people and inspire each other. Use other people’s creations as muse to what we’re going through, to know you’re not alone. Isn’t that the point of art and poetry, after all?”

CAIR-LA Demands SLO District Attorney Apologize for Anti-Muslim Social Media Posts, Calls for Independent Probe
November 6, 2025
The Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) today sent a letter to San Luis Obispo County District Attorney (DA) Dan Dow demanding that he publicly apologize and retract his recent anti-Muslim social media posts following the election of New York City’s first Muslim mayor, Zohran Mamdani.
Dow reportedly reshared a few posts on his public X account, including one from Amy Mek—a known anti-Muslim extremist—that falsely equated the election of Mamdani with 9/11, reinforcing the harmful stereotype that Muslims are inherently tied to terrorism simply because of their faith.
CAIR-LA has also called for an independent investigation into Dow’s conduct and his fitness to continue to serve as DA. Separately, CAIR-LA has requested that Dow meet directly with the organization as well as local Muslim community members to gain a deeper understanding of the American Muslim experience and the harmful impacts of rising Islamophobia nationwide.
In a statement, CAIR-LA Executive Director Hussam Ayloush said:
“Dow’s decision to repost content that weaponizes bigotry and baselessly ties an elected Muslim official to terrorism is appalling and reflects the deeply rooted dehumanization and fearmongering in this country that American Muslims have had to endure for decades. As a district attorney, Dow has a professional and moral responsibility to remain impartial and equitable—yet his actions call into question his ability to engage in fair prosecution of, or respect the due process rights for, Muslim defendants in SLO County.
“We cannot allow public officials to make hate-based claims without accountability. We call on Dow to immediately retract his bigoted, dangerous social media posts and we demand an investigation into his conduct to ensure the safety and fair treatment of Muslims under his jurisdiction.”
Last month, CAIR National and its New York chapter released a joint letter calling on New York’s U.S. Congressional Delegation to confront the growing wave of Islamophobia, anti-Black racism, and anti-Palestinian hate in Congress.
If you or someone you know are the victim of a hate crime or incident, click here to contact CAIR-LA’s Civil Rights department or call (714) 776-1177 (ext. 1).
CAIR-LA is Southern California’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice and empower American Muslims.

CAIR, CAIR Action Congratulate 38 Muslim Election Winners, Report At Least 76 Muslim Candidates Nationwide
November 6, 2025
Historic Firsts Include Zohran K. Mamdani’s Election as NYC’s First Muslim Mayor and
Ghazala Hashmi’s Win as Virginia’s First Muslim Woman Elected Statewide
Exit Poll of Muslim Voters in CA, NJ, NY, MI, and VA to Be Released Tomorrow
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, and CAIR Action, its advocacy affiliate, today released updated tracking results from the November 5 elections showing record Muslim participation and 38 confirmed victories nationwide out of 76 Muslim candidates on the ballot across the nation. CAIR and CAIR Action note that this is a preliminary list and believe additional Muslim candidates ran for office and were elected.
Too Close to Call: In Hamtramck, MI, two Muslim candidates are vying for mayor in a still-undecided race that will ensure a Muslim wins. Three additional contests remain pending, subject to recounts or run-offs.
Note: CAIR and CAIR Action will issue a comprehensive post-election analysis on Friday, detailing exit-poll findings and the broader implications for American Muslim political representation.
The 2025 off-year elections produced multiple historic milestones, including Zohran K. Mamdani’s election as New York City’s first Muslim mayor and Ghazala Hashmi’s victory as Virginia’s first Muslim lieutenant governor, making her the first Muslim woman ever elected to statewide office in U.S. history, following Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison’s previous precedent as the first Muslim man elected statewide.
In a joint statement, CAIR and CAIR Action said:
“These victories are not only wins for Muslim Americans, they are wins for all Americans who believe in justice, equality, and democratic participation.
“Every Muslim who ran for office this year demonstrated extraordinary courage and integrity, and many won despite facing a wave of anti-Muslim hate and organized disinformation. Those who prevailed now carry the trust of their entire communities – regardless of faith – to serve with a commitment to the common good.
“At a time when many American Muslim candidates endured slander, harassment, and overt Islamophobia, their strength and dedication to public service send a clear message that bigotry has no place in American politics and that Americans are rejecting anti-Muslim campaign rhetoric and cheap political attacks.
“Moving forward, we are excited to mobilize the American Muslim community to reach even greater heights of civic engagement in the 2026 midterm elections.”

What does a ‘socialist’ in charge of New York really mean?
6 Nov, 2025
By Graham Hryce
This week the youthful and charismatic Democrat politician Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York city.
Mamdani’s victory was, in one sense, nothing to write home about – his main opponents were the aging and tarnished former Democrat Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has been plagued by sexual harassment claims for years, and the inept and uninspiring Republican Curtis Silwa. In an election characterized by a record voter turnout – over two million New Yorkers voted – Mamdami won with 51% of the vote. Cuomo received 42% and Silwa 7%.
What makes Mamdani’s victory significant is that he is a self-styled “democratic socialist” who was elected mayor without being endorsed by the Democratic Party leadership – most of whom, including Chuck Schumer, minority Senate leader from New York, refused to endorse him at all.
Mamdani is an intelligent, 34-year-old Muslim of Indian heritage who was born in Uganda. His father is a prominent black studies academic and his mother is an acclaimed filmmaker.
Mamdani, a former celebrity rapper, social worker and state assemblyman, ran on a left-wing populist program that focused almost exclusively on alleviating cost-of-living pressures for ordinary New Yorkers – especially young New Yorkers. He promised to deliver rent freezes, free public transport, free childcare, city-owned grocery stores and universal health care. He also promised to build 200,000 affordable new houses with union labor.
Whether Mamdani can actually implement this program is by no means clear – New York city is $5 billion in debt, and the New York state government and governor can severely limit what a New York mayor can do.
Mamdami is a strong critic of America’s support for the Netanyahu and Zelensky regimes, and has stated explicitly that he would fund his reforms by increasing taxes on New-York-based large corporations and the ultra-rich that control them.
Mamdani’s program is a pragmatic social democratic one – that contrasts starkly with the MAGA populist agenda, which is based on magical thinking, demonizing America’s supposed internal enemies and leaving America’s economic structure and widening inequalities of wealth completely intact.
Mamdani maintained throughout his campaign that “unlike Trump I can deliver for the working class.” This is correct – because if his economic program were to be implemented it would really benefit those groups that he represents. In any rational view, cost-of-living pressures on ordinary Americans can only be relieved by redistributing wealth downwards from the haves to the have-nots.
Some left-wing commentators – as does Mamdani himself – have seen Mamdani’s rapid political ascendency as the harbinger of a radical transformation of the Democratic Party – into a party that is, as it once was, focused on representing the traditional working class and other groups in American society that have been economically pauperized and culturally alienated by globalization.
Right-wing commentators have branded Mumdani a “communist,” “terrorist sympathiser” and anti-Semite, and see him as a dangerous threat to American society.
Both of these views are, however, fundamentally mistaken. Mandami is a perculiarly New York phenomenon, and there is no possibility that his radical economic program will be adopted by the current Democratic Party leadership – despite his claim that his campaign was “a referendum on where the Democratic Party goes.”
Nor is Mamdani a serious threat to American society. In fact his reform program is a modest one that, at present, stands little chance of attracting a majority of American voters – who remain content to vote for the flailing and increasingly irrelevant Democratic Party or, alternatively, Trump’s reenergized populist Republican Party.
New York is a Democrat city and a Democrat state. When Robert Kennedy and Hillary Clinton launched their political careers they ran for the Senate in New York and were elected virtually unopposed. Donald Trump and Elon Musk both implicitly acknowledged this fact when they endorsed Andrew Cuomo rather than Mamdani’s Republican opponent – in a desperate attempt to prevent Mamdani from being elected. New York city has had left-wing populist mayors in the past – most notably Fiorello La Guardia, and more recently, Bill de Blasio.
Mamdani is a brilliant grassroots politician who stayed on message throughout his campaign – which was based upon his personal brand and a savvy and sophisticated use of social media. He focused on winning over young New Yorkers who have been left behind by globalization – together with disaffected workers, black people, and members of immigrant communities that have suffered a similar fate. New York is the most expensive city in America to live in.
The Democratic Party leadership views Mamdani both as an aberration and a threat, and refused to support him. Nor is it surprising that major media networks (both left and right-wing) pointedly refused to endorse Mamdani.
The modern day Democratic Party – which has not represented the working class for decades – is committed to protecting the interests of the global elites. Hence its slavish adherence to their woke globalist ideologies such as catastrophic climate change, diversity privileges, the #MeToo movement, and so-called transgender “rights” – even though these ideologies continue to alienate an increasingly large number of ordinary American voters.
Roosevelt’s pragmatic New Deal reforms, which broadly favored the working class, trade unions and ethnic minorities, have been progressively wound back since the 1970s – not only by Republican presidents, but just as brutally by Democrat presidents Clinton and Obama.
That is why the traditional working class, together with large segments of the black and Latino communities, have deserted the Democratic Party over the last decade – and now vote for Trump. They do so not necessarily because they believe in Trump’s populist program, but because they refuse to vote for a party that no longer even pretends to represent them.
It is true that the Democratic Party has always tolerated left-wing populists – for example William Jennings Bryan, Huey Long, George Wallace and more recently Bernie Sanders (who enthusiastically supported Mamdani) – but only so long as they remained local politicians and did not attempt to radically refashion the party’s economic agenda.
The Democratic Party can, therefore, live with Mamdani – unless his mayoral victory sparks a wider movement to radicalize the party. If that should occur, Mamdani will be ruthlessly cut down – as Bernie Sanders was in 2016 by Hillary Clinton and the glass-ceiling and transgender-rights brigade.
The conservative critique of Mamdani and the well-funded smear campaign conducted against him is, of course, absurd and irrational – but crypto McCarthyism and anti-intellectualism are now at the heart of contemporary American politics. Mamdani is not a “communist” or a “terrorist sympathiser.” Nor is he an antisemite – in fact, many New York Jews opposed to the mass killings in Gaza enthusiastically support Mamdani.
In the UK, Australia, and most European countries Mamdani would be seen as a mainstream social democrat – but in America an explicit social democratic economic agenda has always been demonized as a form of “communism.”
Perceptive American historians in the 1950s, most notably Louis Hartz, viewed America as being perpetually trapped in a liberal capitalist consensus, in which socialism (even in its moderate social democratic form) had failed to emerge as a significant political force – unlike in the UK, Australia and most European nations, where powerful social democratic labor parties have shaped politics since the early 20th century.
The complete failure of socialism in America also explains why the Democratic Party in the 1970s so eagerly adopted proto-globalist ideologies like affirmative action and gay and women’s rights – and why it remains so firmly wedded to their successor woke globalist ideologies today.
Contemporary America is, of course, no longer liberal – indeed it has become illiberal under Trump’s right-wing populist presidency – and that is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future. The “power elites” – a term coined by the historian C. Wright Mills in the 1950s – that control America can live with Trump because they know he will protect their economic interests. Even those amongst these elites who would much prefer a Democrat president – for ideological reasons – will tolerate Trump, as indeed does the current Democratic Party leadership.
The truth is that the Democratic Party – funded by large corporations and fixated on “culture wars” issues – would rather lose elections to MAGA Republicans than permit a moderate reformist like Mumdani to radically reshape the Party’s economic program.
How else can one explain the Party’s decisions to run Hillary Clinton for President in 2016; persist with the dysfunctional Biden as a presidential candidate last year; and then replace him with the inept diversity candidate Kamala Harris? Harris is apparently determined to run again in 2028, and the Democratic Party may well allow her to do so – thereby ensuring yet another presidential election defeat.
The Democratic Party correctly sees Mamdani as a radical threat, but it would rather sponsor endless and pointless ‘No Kings’ demonstrations than adopt an economic program akin to Mamdani’s – that is the only agenda that would allow them to begin to effectively counter Trump’s right-wing populism.
Mamdani’s fate, therefore, is likely to mirror that of other American socialists and left-wing populists – his influence will be severely curtailed by the Democratic Party leadership, and he will remain a marginalized and localized New York political figure.
That is, in large part, because Mamdani’s reformist economic program is still anathema to the vast majority of American voters. His agenda clearly resonates with a majority of disaffected voters in New York city – but it is electoral poison elsewhere, especially in the Mid-West and the American South. Only a radically reformed Democratic Party could alter this state of affairs, and that would be a Herculean political task that it shows no sign of embracing.
Mamdani’s likely fate does not augur well for America’s future. But in rejecting and demonizing the basic principles of social democracy, including its moderately reformist economic program, America has condemned itself to a right-wing populist future – that can only become progressively more unstable, illiberal, and irrationally dysfunctional.
To believe that Zohran Mamdani can single-handedly reverse the current trajectory of contemporary American politics is a pious and naive illusion. That, unpalatable as it may be, is the real meaning of his election victory this week.

People will ‘flee communism’ in NYC – Trump
6 Nov, 2025
New Yorkers will soon run away from their “communist” city, US President Donald Trump has remarked, following the election of progressive Democrat Zohran Mamdani as mayor.
Trump told supporters in Miami on Wednesday that Democrats had “installed a communist” to lead the country’s largest city and added that the so-called Sunshine State “will soon be the refuge for those fleeing communism in New York.”
Mamdani, who describes himself as a democratic socialist and was elected on Tuesday, advocates affordable housing, public ownership of utilities, and wealth taxation. His platform has drawn criticism from moderates and Republicans alike, who accuse him of pushing “radical,” “communist,” and populist ideas, while supporters argue his proposals address New York’s worsening housing crisis and inequality.
Trump’s decision to make the remark in Miami appeared deliberate. The city has long been home to large Cuban and Venezuelan communities, which helped shape its reputation as a haven for those escaping socialist and communist countries.
Popular opinion in the US has long viewed the ideology as a threat to democracy and free markets. Washington has pursued a global strategy of containment, intervening in conflicts such as Korea and Vietnam, supporting anti-communist regimes, and engaging in a Cold War with the Soviet Union.
Analysts note that Trump often uses the term as a rhetorical weapon to discredit opponents rather than as a literal label. During the 2024 presidential election campaign, he described a proposal by his Democratic rival Kamala Harris for grocery price controls as “full Communist.”

Mediators propose deal to get Hamas fighters out of Gaza’s Israeli zone, sources say
November 06, 2025
CAIRO: Hamas fighters holed up in the Israeli-held Rafah area of Gaza would surrender their arms in exchange for passage to other areas of the enclave under a proposal to resolve an issue seen as a risk to the month-old truce, according to two sources familiar with the talks.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff said the proposed deal for some 200 fighters would be a test for a broader process to disarm Hamas forces across Gaza.
Since the US-brokered ceasefire took effect in Gaza on October 10, the Rafah area has been the scene of at least two attacks on Israeli forces which Israel has blamed on Hamas; the militant group has denied responsibility.
Egyptian mediators have proposed that, in exchange for safe passage, fighters still in Rafah surrender their arms to Egypt and give details of tunnels there so they can be destroyed, one of the sources, an Egyptian security official, said.
Israel and Hamas have yet to publicly accept mediators’ proposals, the two sources said. A third confirmed that talks on the issue were underway.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the accounts; Hazem Qassem, a Hamas spokesperson in Gaza, declined to comment.
The attacks in Rafah spiralled into some of the worst violence since the ceasefire took hold, with three Israeli soldiers killed, prompting Israeli retaliation that killed dozens of Palestinians.
Two of the sources said the Hamas fighters in Rafah, which the group’s armed wing has said have been out of contact since March, might be unaware a ceasefire was in place. One of them added that getting the fighters out served the interest of safeguarding the truce.
The sources did not say how many Hamas fighters might be holed up in the Rafah area.
The ceasefire is the first part of US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the Gaza war.
The militant group has released the last 20 living hostages seized in the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners; Israeli troops have withdrawn from western areas of Gaza, where Hamas remains in control.
Details of the next phase of Trump’s plan, which requires Hamas to disarm and surrender control of Gaza, have yet to be agreed. The plan foresees Gaza being governed by a technocratic Palestinian committee with international supervision, and the deployment of an international force.
Witkoff, one of the US negotiators on the plan, said work to stand up an international security force would be finished in the next three weeks and that would be the moment for Hamas to decommission its fighters and demilitarize the strip.
“We may see the model of what we’re trying to do (across Gaza)... with these 200 fighters who are trapped in Rafah, and whether they’re going to be able to raise their hands, walk out, turn over their weapons,” Witkoff said at a business conference in Florida. “And so this will be one of the tests.”
Since the ceasefire, Hamas has also handed over the bodies of 22 of 28 deceased hostages. Hamas has said the devastation in Gaza has made locating the bodies difficult. Israel accuses Hamas of stalling.
Israel has released to Gaza the bodies of 285 Palestinians, according to the territory’s health ministry.
Hamas-led militants seized 251 hostages in the October 7 attacks, and killed another 1,200 people, according to Israeli tallies. Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed nearly 69,000 Palestinians, health officials in the enclave say — 241 of them killed since the ceasefire took hold.

Kurdish leader Barzani pushes for leverage with Baghdad in Iraq vote
November 06, 2025
BAGHDAD: Masoud Barzani, the Iraqi Kurdish leader who first took up arms against Saddam Hussein as a teenage guerrilla, remains a towering figure in Kurdish politics as Iraq heads into its November 11 election.
Though he no longer holds an official post, Barzani’s Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) is urging a strong Kurdish turnout to safeguard regional interests and strengthen its hand in fraught negotiations with Baghdad.
Barzani’s political journey has been shaped by decades of rebellion, betrayal, and uneasy truces with successive Iraqi governments. Now in his late 70s, he continues to wield influence behind the scenes, often referred to as “President” in Kurdish media and diplomatic circles.
His legacy looms large over the race for seats in the national parliament in Baghdad, a contest that could either reinforce Kurdish autonomy or expose deepening fractures within the Kurdish political landscape.
A strong KDP performance would give Barzani’s camp more leverage in disputes with the central government over oil revenues and budget allocations — issues that have sharply escalated tensions between Irbil and Baghdad in 2025.
A weak showing, however, could embolden rival Kurdish factions and strengthen the central government’s position.
FROM MOUNTAIN FIGHTER TO POLITICAL POWER BROKER
Barzani’s long career has been marked by cunning and patience, qualities that helped the Kurds in northern Iraq to survive brutality under Saddam.
Following the 1991 Gulf war, the Kurds rose up against Saddam’s dictatorship, and Barzani and his peshmerga fighters came down from the mountains and captured several cities.
But the victorious US-led allies balked at the prospect of a Kurdish split from Baghdad and initially gave Saddam’s troops a free hand to put down the uprising.
Facing strategic defeat, the quietly spoken Barzani was forced to do the unthinkable and negotiate with Saddam, who had gassed the Kurds and buried them in mass graves years before.
Barzani was saved by a US and British no-fly zone over the north which allowed him and his Kurdish rival Jalal Talabani to retake the area. The longest period of Kurdish autonomy in modern history followed, but the experience was scarred by war between Barzani and Talabani’s Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.
Barzani invited Iraqi government tanks into the enclave in 1996 to seize the regional capital Irbil, sending not only Talabani but CIA agents and their local employees fleeing.
GAMBLE ON INDEPENDENCE ENDS IN FAILURE
After decades of struggle, and Saddam’s overthrow in a 2003 US-led invasion, critics say Barzani made one of his biggest errors by seeking a referendum on Kurdish independence in 2017.
The Baghdad government rejected it as illegal and sent troops to seize the oil city of Kirkuk, which the Kurds regard as the heart of any future homeland. A bitter Barzani stepped down as president of the regional government.
“I am the same Masoud Barzani, I am a Peshmerga and will continue to help my people in their struggle for independence,” Barzani said in a televised address.
“Nobody stood up with us, other than our mountains.”
Barzani was born in 1946, soon after his legendary father, Mulla Mustafa Barzani, known as the Lion of Kurdistan, founded a party to fight for the rights of Iraqi Kurds.
Masoud Barzani became a guerrilla as a teenager, and over time he would become familiar with an abiding theme in Kurdish history — betrayal by regional and Western powers.
Exiled and dying of cancer in a US hospital in 1976, Mulla Mustafa lamented that he had ever trusted the United States.
A year earlier, Mulla Mustafa had been fighting a guerrilla war against Baghdad backed by Iran’s pro-Western shah, but he was cut adrift when then-US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger brokered a deal that allowed Saddam to crush the Kurds.
During the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war, Barzani allied the KDP with Tehran once more. As a result, some 8,000 Barzani tribesmen were rounded up and paraded through Baghdad before being executed. In Saddam’s words: “They went to hell.”
In March 1988 Saddam’s warplanes bombed the Kurdish town of Halabja with poison gas killing up to 5,000 people.
Despite the massacres, Barzani retained enough of a fighting force to respond to President George Bush’s appeal for an uprising during the 1991 Gulf War, when a US-led coalition routed Saddam’s army in Kuwait.
After Saddam’s fall, Barzani became a central figure in the drive to create an autonomous Kurdish state in northern Iraq. Kurdish leaders kept their territory relatively free of the sectarian bloodshed that plagued most of Iraq. Western oil executives flocked to the region seeking deals.
STRAINS WITH BAGHDAD OVER OIL RESURFACE
Kurds showed their military capability by joining Iraqi government troops and Iranian-backed paramilitary forces to drive Daesh militants out of Mosul.
Confident that the time was right for an independent homeland, Barzani pursued the disastrous referendum. A day after the vote he recalled the Kurds’ seemingly endless suffering.
“I’ve been fighting for half a century. With my people I have been through mass killings, deportations, gassings. I remember times when we thought we were done for, headed for extermination,” he told the Kurdish Rudaw news agency.
“I remember times, as in 1991 after the first war against Saddam, when the democracies came to our rescue but left the dictatorship in place, thus casting us back into the shadows.”
Barzani’s arch-enemy Saddam was executed in 2007. But tensions persist between the Kurds and Baghdad authorities.
Relations soured once again in February 2022 when Iraq’s federal court deemed an oil and gas law regulating the oil industry in Iraqi Kurdistan unconstitutional and demanded that Kurdish authorities hand over their crude oil supplies.
Barzani criticized the move as a “completely political decision” aimed at opposing the Kurdistan region.
Barzani has kept a hand in politics through his KDP. The party swept the Kurdish vote in a 2021 election after forming an alliance with Shiite cleric Moqtada Al-Sadr.

UN Security Council lifts sanctions on Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa
EPHREM KOSSAIFY
November 06, 2025
NEW YORK CITY: The UN Security Council voted on Thursday to lift sanctions on Ahmad Al-Sharaa, effectively removing the Syrian president from the Daesh and Al-Qaeda Sanctions List in a move widely seen as signaling international recognition of the post-Assad political order in Syria.
Resolution 2729 was tabled by the US and adopted with 14 votes in favor, zero against and one abstention, by China. It also delists the Syrian interior minister, Anas Hasan Khattab, who was previously designated under the same sanctions regime.
Acting under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, the council declared on Thursday that both officials were no longer subject to asset freezes or travel bans imposed under previous counterterrorism measures.
Al-Sharaa arrived in Belem, Brazil, on Thursday for the 2025 UN Climate Change Conference, COP 30, and is due to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington on Monday.
Al-Sharaa led the Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham coalition during the December 2024 offensive that toppled the Assad regime, after which he became the de facto leader of Syria.
Washington had been urging the 15-member Security Council for months to ease sanctions on Syria and officials within its new government.
The US permanent representative to the UN, Mike Waltz, said that by adopting the resolution the council was sending “a strong political signal that recognizes Syria is in a new era since Assad and his associates were toppled in December 2024.”
He added: “There is a new Syrian government in place, led by President Ahmad Al-Sharaa, that is working hard to fulfill its commitments on countering terrorism and narcotics, on eliminating any remnants of chemical weapons, and promoting regional security and stability, as well as an inclusive Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process.
“As President Trump previously indicated, now is Syria’s chance at greatness.”
In making its decision, the Security Council recalled a series of previous resolutions targeting Daesh, Al-Qaeda and affiliated groups, and reaffirmed its “strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of the Syrian Arab Republic.”
The text of the resolution, seen by Arab News, emphasized that the delisting of the Syrian officials was consistent with efforts to promote “the long-term reconstruction, stability and economic development” of the country, while maintaining the integrity of the global framework for counterterrorism sanctions.
The resolution specifically welcomed the commitment of the Syrian Arab Republic to: ensuring “full, safe, rapid and unhindered humanitarian access” in line with international humanitarian law; to countering terrorism, including foreign terrorist fighters, and individuals, groups, undertakings and entities affiliated with Daesh or Al-Qaeda; to the protection of human rights and ensuring the safety and security of all Syrians, regardless of ethnicity or religion; to counter-narcotics efforts; to the advancement of transitional justice; to the nonproliferation and elimination of remnants of chemical weapons; to regional security and stability; and to an inclusive, Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process.
It expressed an expectation that Syrian authorities would adhere to these pledges and help to uphold regional stability.
Al-Sharaa was sanctioned by the UN in May 2014 when Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, at the time affiliated with Al-Qaeda, was added to the Daesh and Al-Qaeda Sanctions List. The designation imposed a travel ban and asset freeze that would remain in place for more than a decade.
The Security Council’s vote on Thursday followed a decision by Washington in May to lift most of the US sanctions on Syria. Those measures, introduced in 1979 and expanded significantly after the Syrian civil war began in 2011, restricted trade, investment and energy exports. While the bulk of the restrictions have been lifted, some congressional measures remain in place pending further review.
By formally delisting Al-Sharaa, the Security Council resolution is viewed as marking a turning point in international engagement with the new authorities in Syria.
Diplomats described the move as both pragmatic recognition of the changed realities on the ground in the country, and an incentive for continued cooperation on the issues of humanitarian access, counterterrorism efforts and political reform.

UNIFIL calls on Israel to halt airstrikes and ‘all violations’ in south Lebanon
EPHREM KOSSAIFY
November 06, 2025
NEW YORK: The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon on Thursday urged Israel to immediately halt airstrikes in southern Lebanon and called on all sides to show restraint to prevent a wider escalation.eeeed
The peacekeeping mission said its troops observed multiple Israeli airstrikes in the southern towns of Tayr Dibbah, Taibe and Ayta Al-Jabal — areas within UNIFIL’s zone of operations.
One person was killed and eight others were wounded in the heavy strikes.
Israel said the airstrikes targeted Hezbollah sites and capabilities, marking an escalation in near-daily attacks despite a standing ceasefire agreement.
“These airstrikes constitute clear violations of Security Council resolution 1701,” UNIFIL said, referring to the 2006 resolution that ended the war between Israel and Hezbollah.
The interim force called on Israel to “immediately cease these attacks and all violations” of UN Security Council resolution 1701, while urging Lebanese actors “to refrain from any response that could inflame the situation further.”
It said both countries must adhere to their obligations under the resolution and to a recent understanding reached in November “to avoid putting the current hard-won progress at risk.”
In November 2024, Israel and Lebanon agreed a US and French-brokered ceasefire that ended over a year of conflict.
The agreement, which took effect on Nov. 27, 2024, was a 60-day truce intended to be the foundation for a permanent cessation of hostilities based on the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 170.
UNIFIL said the overnight strikes came as the Lebanese Armed Forces carried out operations to control unauthorized weapons and infrastructure south of the Litani River.
“Any military action, especially on such a destructive scale, threatens the safety of civilians and undermines progress toward a political and diplomatic solution,” it said.
UNIFIL added that its peacekeepers remain deployed alongside Lebanese soldiers “working to restore stability in south Lebanon,” and continue to support both Lebanon and Israel in implementing the resolution.

Jordan deploys new medical team to treat Palestinians in southern Gaza
November 06, 2025
LONDON: Jordan deployed a new medical team to its field hospital in Gaza on Thursday to provide critical medical care and relief to thousands of Palestinians.
The team of doctors, nurses and administrators is delivering care in a facility with clinics, operating rooms and emergency rooms, according to Petra news agency.
The hospital employs specialists in surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics, orthopedics, neurosurgery and intensive care, as well as a mobile prosthetic limb unit to assist patients with amputations.
It marks a new chapter in Jordan’s humanitarian efforts in Gaza.
The Jordanian medical team that was replaced on Thursday treated more than 61,000 patients, performed almost 3,000 surgeries and fitted 105 prosthetic limbs.
Under Jordan’s “Restoring Hope” initiative, 637 prosthetic limb operations have been performed on patients in Gaza, Petra reported.
Teams from the northern and southern field hospitals returned to Jordan on Wednesday evening, and were welcomed by senior military officials.

Israeli forces demolish homes in Jerusalem, kill 15-year-old Palestinian
November 06, 2025
LONDON: Israeli forces killed a 15-year-old Palestinian boy in the occupied West Bank on Thursday and demolished two homes of the Houshieh family, displacing about 50 people.
The Ramallah-based Ministry of Health said that during an Israeli military raid in Ya’bad, west of Jenin early on Thursday, Murad Fawzi Abu Seifen was struck by four rounds. Israeli forces prevented ambulance crews from reaching him. He bled to death before Israeli forces retrieved his body, the ministry added.
His death brings the number of Palestinians killed in Jenin since the Israeli offensive began in January to 56, with more than 200 wounded.
On Thursday, Israeli forces demolished the homes of brothers Iyad and Ziad Houshieh in Qatana, a town in occupied East Jerusalem, citing construction without a permit.
Each home, about 150 sq. meters large, housed at least 20 people.
Israeli authorities had notified the Houshiehs of the impending demolition of their homes 10 years ago, according to Wafa news agency.
Qatana has faced an intensive Israeli operation since September, with authorities ordering the demolition of all homes built without permits in Qatana and Qubeiba, the hometowns of two Palestinian gunmen who killed six Israelis in Jerusalem that month.
In October, authorities conducted 25 demolition operations in Qatana, affecting 28 sites, including 15 inhabited homes, two empty homes and 11 agricultural facilities, according to Wafa.
In Jenin and its refugee camp, Israeli forces since January have destroyed more than 600 homes — 33 percent of the camp — and displaced 22,000 residents.

Al-Sharaa becomes first Syrian president to participate in UN climate summit
November 06, 2025
LONDON: Ahmad Al-Sharaa has become the first president of the Syrian Arab Republic to attend an annual UN Climate Change Conference.
He arrived on Thursday in Belem, Brazil, which is hosting the 2025 event, COP30, and was greeted by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The conference, which will run from Nov. 10 to 21, gathers representatives of more than 190 countries, including heads of state, ministers and other international leaders, to address urgent issues related to climate change and agree commitments for tackling them. The conference is preceded by a two-day summit of world leaders on Thursday and Friday.
While at the event, Al-Sharaa will meet with delegates and leaders from a number of countries, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported.
The trip marks his first visit to South America since taking power in December after the collapse of the Assad regime in the face of an insurgent offensive that ended almost 14 years of civil war in Syria.
Al-Sharaa, accompanied by Prime Minister Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani, will visit Washington on Monday and Tuesday next week, during which he will meet US President Donald Trump at the White House.

‘We Will Defeat Terrorism’ – Tinubu States Amidst Trumps Threat
November 6, 2025
By Enioluwa Adeniyi
President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to eradicating terrorism and achieving lasting peace throughout the country, assuring Nigerians that the Federal Government is intensifying its engagement with international partners to enhance national security.
Speaking at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu stated that his government was working closely with the global community to address threats that undermine Nigeria’s stability.
“Despite the political headwinds and the fear of our people, we continue to engage our partners. We are engaging the world diplomatically,” the President said.
He described international collaboration as a crucial component of Nigeria’s security strategy.
Tinubu reaffirmed that terrorism would be crushed and peace restored nationwide, stating that his administration remained focused on the Renewed Hope Agenda despite prevailing economic and security challenges.
“I assure you all that we will defeat terrorism. The task ahead is to move forward with clarity of purpose guided by the Renewed Hope Agenda to build a prosperous Nigeria,” he added.
Tinubu’s stand comes hours after Trump intensified his threat of military action in Nigeria, saying he would not rule out air strikes or boots on the ground to halt what he described as the targeted killing of Christians in the West African country.
Trump, who on October 31 redesignated Nigeria a “country of particular concern”, reiterated the warning in a video message on Wednesday in which he accused “radical Islamists” of carrying out a “mass slaughter” of Christians and said Washington would act if the Nigerian government failed to stop the violence.

Trump’s threat and misguided notion of Christian genocide
November 7, 2025
by Baba Yusuf
“Ponder and deliberate before you make a move.” … Sun Tzu – A Chinese Military General, Strategist, Philosopher, and Writer
Trump’s Narratives or Threats Should Not Define Nigeria:
The notion about Christian genocide in Nigeria is completely untrue and misguided. It is a calculated attempt to further sow seeds of discord and further degenerate the fragile inter-religious, ethnic, and tribal relationship and sentiments between Muslims and Christians in Nigeria.
I’m saying so for the practical reasons that there is no way that there could be Christian genocide in Nigeria, especially under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is a Muslim, and he has a wife, Senator Remi Tinubu, the first lady who is a Christian, not just a Christian, but a very senior pastor in the Redeemed Church of Christ of Nigeria, a Church that has one of the largest following in Africa.
The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria also ensures that the power-sharing structure and formula is such that Christians CANNOT be excluded from the leadership of Nigeria at all strata. In this administration, the 3rd most powerful position, the President of the Senate, is Senator Godswill Akpabio, a Christian from southern Nigeria. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Head of Service, Chief of Defense Staff, Chief of Air Staff, the Director General of the Department of State Security Services, the Chief of Defense Intelligence, Comptroller General of Immigration are all Christians. In terms of the economy, the key managers of Nigeria’s economy, i.e., the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Group CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, and the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, are all Christians.
Furthermore, while the Inspector General of Police is a Muslim, his wife is a Christian. Therefore, it is impossible for all the aforementioned leaders and other leaders that are holding critical political, economic, defense, and security positions will allow Christian genocide to be perpetrated on their people.
Indeed, there is no way that there will be Christian genocide in Nigeria, and a President whose wife is a Senior pastor will emerge as the Executive President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. More importantly, there is no way for Christian genocide to happen in Nigeria when the majority of the votes the President Tinubu got in came from the northwest, northeast, and north-central, where there is a very high number of Muslims who cast their vote for a president who has a Christian wife. Indeed, if there is Christian genocide, it means that every Christian’s life in Nigeria is in danger from any other religion. It means that every Christian is being sought out, attacked, and killed by Muslims. Pushing this narrative is very dangerous.
A classic example of genocide is what is happening in Gaza under the watch and guidance of President Donald Trump. Interestingly, the Palestinians are a mix of Christians and Muslims, while it is true that the majority of Israelis are not actually Christians. There is no where we have seen the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) separating Christian Palestinians from Muslim Palestinians before annihilating them.
It is worthy of note that the United Nations, the Red Cross, Amnesty International and other respected global humanitarian institutions have never stated that Christian genocide is happening in Nigeria.
Any USA attack on Nigerian soil without the approval and collaboration of the Nigerian government and Nigerians is, first of all, an unprovoked act of war, and secondly, it will be a failure and a disaster. A lot of innocent Muslims and Christians will die, either due to the attack or due potential fallouts of the attack on non-Christians.
By the way, anywhere the USA has gone to provide “intervention” or “save” a people or a country, the USA leaves the people and the country devastated and far worse than they met it, with no date of recovery in any foreseeable future. Examples are Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Ukraine, etc.
A Message to some Nigerians who are promoting Trump’s Threat:
The message to bitter Nigerians that are cheerleading Trump’s threat, I say to you; Just like the bandits and terrorists, when and if the USA attacks Nigeria With jet fighters, bombers or the drones (because it is highly unlikely that Trump will put soldiers on the ground), I wonder if the American fighter jets or drones are configured to identify Muslims or Christians, if they will recognize “ALLAHU AKBAR!”, or “JESUS IS LORD!”, so that the Christians will be spared! I wonder if, in the aftermath of an attack on Nigeria by the USA, the USA will send troops to provide Medicare and other humanitarian support only to the Christians. Trump does not care about you. He has is objectives, and certainly, our liberty, peace and prosperity are not part of his objectives. Think about it!
Nigeria is facing multi-dimensional Insecurity and not Christian Genocide
While ethnic and religious sentiments are key root causes of crises across Nigeria, it is also important to note that another critical cause of insecurity, as it is globally, is economic objective, which I term “economic terrorism”. Therefore, the trend of always giving religious connotations the insecurity, in my own humble view, is a huge mistake. I think we should expand our views and mindsets beyond ethnic and religious connotations.
For instance, while Boko Haram, Al-Qaeda, ISIS/ISIL, Lakurawa, etc. claim not to be Islamic fundamentalists, they are actually economic terrorists who hide under the guise of Islamic extremism to perpetrate their evils and pursue their economic expedition and imperialism with the backing of some Western nations. And we have seen evidence over the years of how the Western world, not just America, has been supporting the disintegration of African nations and other emerging economies for economic benefits. Countries that are blessed with natural resources suddenly find themselves in the midst of religious, tribal, and ethnocentric strife that strangles efforts to find solutions.
During the record of a Christian President in Nigeria, President Goodluck Jonathan he sought the intervention of the United States of America under the leadership of President Barrack Obama to provide support with Super Tucano Jets, and other weapons to fight terrorists and restore security in Nigeria, but President Obama refused to approve the procurement while the terrorists continued killing, maiming, raping, and pillaging Nigerians whether they were Christians, Muslims, or Pagans.
Moreover, facts and statistics, and reality have shown that the ratio of muslims that are being killed is higher than the ratio of Christians that are being killed by the so-called Jihadists. They attack mosques, churches, schools, hospitals, marketplaces, etc., with no isolation. They do not select, identify, or isolate Muslims or Muslim communities when they perpetrate their evil of raping, killing, maiming, and resource pillaging under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
In addition, facts have shown the deep involvement of the “deep state” in the destabilization of emerging economies for political and economic benefits. It is instructive to note that northern Nigeria, just like every part of Nigeria, is blessed with abundant natural resources, and yearly, more discoveries are made of large volumes of high-quality deposits of these highly sought-after minerals. The discoveries and abundance of rare earth metals that are in high demand by the world superpowers, in the northern northwest, northeast, and north central states of Nigeria, is the key attraction of non-state actors, their “deep state” collaborators that are supported by Western nations. I am therefore not surprised that President Trump had to look for an excuse to invade Nigeria under the guise of intervention. We have seen what happened some months ago, how President Donald Trump has leveraged a deal with the Democratic Republic of Congo to practically hand off a lot of their rare-earth metals for US “intervention” to stop the crises in DRC, which was induced by the Western powers
Trump’s Threat Should be a Wake-up call to the leaders of Nigeria:
Trump’s Threat should be a reality check for our leaders, that unless they deal with this issue of insecurity and good governance in Nigeria, there will be continuous characterization, politicization, and gaslighting of Nigeria’s security and socio-economic situations by Nigerians and the international community.
I dare say that if the issue of insecurity is not addressed forthwith, it will further polarize the country and put Nigeria at the precipice of a meltdown that we may not be able to contain
Therefore, President Trump’s decision and threat should wake up the political class for them to step up and take responsibility and do the needful, and get Nigeria out of this very embarrassing and brutal insecurity, and other debilitating socio-economic situations in the Country.
Propaganda, denials, counter-denials, deflections, and perception management will not solve our problems. We need decisive, efficient, effective, impactful, and sustainable actions and solutions. Anything else would only make things worse for Nigerians and Nigeria.

ECOWAS, Islamic leaders unite to fight terrorism in West Africa
6th November 2025
Gift Habib
The Economic Community of West African States, in collaboration with Islamic scholars and organisations, on Thursday called for stronger unity, cooperation, and non-violent strategies to counter terrorism and extremism across West Africa and the Sahel.
The call came at the close of the first West African Islamic Conference on Security and Governance, held from November 4 to 6, 2025, at the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja, Nigeria.
The theme of the event is “The Role of Islamic Organisations in Countering Terrorism in the Sahel.”
The three-day conference which was co-organised by ECOWAS and the Jamiyyatu Ansariddeen Attijaniyya, brought together Islamic leaders, traditional rulers, political figures, scholars, and representatives from ECOWAS member states, as well as international organisations.
In his address, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, described the conference as a landmark in regional cooperation against terrorism.
Touray acknowledged the growing threat of terrorism and violent extremism in the region, noting that “the 2025 Global Terrorism Index report reveals a significant shift in global terrorism patterns, with Africa emerging as the new hub of terrorism. The Sahel region, in particular, has seen a dramatic increase in terrorism.”
The ECOWAS Commission President reiterated that the regional body’s Action Plan Against Terrorism focuses on both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies and emphasised the need to modernise traditional Quranic schools to prevent youth radicalisation.
“We need to improve and modernise the school system and convert them into conducive and formalised centres of learning and economic empowerment,” he stated.
He further recognised member states’ ongoing efforts to integrate traditional Islamic schools into national education systems.
The Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, commended ECOWAS for its leadership and international partners for their collaboration.
“Your commitment to regional peace and security is a beacon of hope for our citizens,” he said.
Calling for continued partnership between governments and religious institutions, the Emir, who is also the President of the association in Nigeria added, “Let us strive to create a region where every individual can live in peace, security, and dignity.
“Let us work together to build a brighter future for our children and our community.”
Reading the summary of the conference, the African Union High Representative for “Silencing the Guns”, Mohamed Chambas stressed that the main objective of the gathering was to develop and implement an action plan that leverages Islamic organisations’ influence to counter terrorism through non-kinetic strategies.
Chambas, who was represented by the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Abdel-Fatah Musah said, “Participants affirmed that authentic Islamic teachings promote peace, justice, and respect for human life, rejecting all forms of extremism and violence.
“Participants acknowledged that terrorism and violent extremism threaten social stability, economic growth, social cohesion, and national unity.
“Participants identified poverty, unemployment, social exclusion, political marginalisation, and weak governance as key enablers of extremist recruitment.”
Chambas urged stakeholders to remain steadfast in implementing the recommendations.
“Over 40 million children are out of school, and terrorism-related deaths have increased 10 percent in the past decade. A robust discussion shared best practices and crafted strategic recommendations to promote peace, neutrality, and stability.
“We have recognised the importance of preventing violent extremism and promoting peace and neutrality, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.
“We have also acknowledged the need for a coordinated cross-border approach to address the complex intersection of traditional Islamic education, youth vulnerability, and regional insecurity.
“As we adopt the Regional Declaration on Improving Islamic Education and Countering Violent Extremism, I urge all stakeholders to remain committed to the cause.
“Let us work together to implement the recommendations and strategies outlined in this declaration. Let us empower Islamic organisations to promote a culture of peace, tolerance, and coexistence,” he urged.
The conference, which featured 11 sessions under seven sub-themes, examined the economic, social, and political factors fueling radicalization in the region.
It also discussed reforming traditional Islamic education systems, promoting youth empowerment, and building stronger community resilience against extremist recruitment.
The conference concluded with the adoption of the Regional Declaration on Improving Islamic Education and Countering Violent Extremism, which outlines strategies to strengthen Islamic organizations’ roles in promoting peace, tolerance, and coexistence.
Over the past decade, West Africa and the Sahel have witnessed an alarming surge in terrorist activity.
According to reports, groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State continue to exploit porous borders, weak governance, and local grievances to expand their influence across Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, the northern part of Nigeria, and parts of coastal West Africa.

BBC Questions Credibility Of ‘Christian Genocide’ Data In Nigeria
November 6, 2025
The BBC has raised serious doubts over data being used to push the global narrative that Christians are facing genocide in Nigeria, revealing that many of the statistics cited by Western politicians and campaigners are unverifiable and methodologically weak.
The renewed focus followed Vice President, Kashim Shettima’s speech at the recent United Nations General Assembly, where he condemned violence in Gaza and called for a two-state solution.
Shortly after, U.S. talk-show host Bill Maher described events in Nigeria as a “genocide.”
U.S. Senator Ted Cruz amplified the claim, accusing Nigerian authorities of enabling the “massacre” of Christians.
Cruz wrote on 𝕏, “50,000 Christians have been killed since 2009, 2000 schools and 18,000 churches destroyed… The Nigerian government has looked the other way.”
Following the uproar, U.S. President Donald Trump redesignated Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern, citing an Open Doors report that claimed 3,100 Christians were killed between October 2023 and October 2024.
The BBC investigation found that the statistics driving the genocide narrative were “difficult to verify” and often traced back to the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (InterSociety), a Nigerian NGO whose data collection methods the BBC described as “opaque.”
InterSociety admitted it often merges “summary statistics” from previous reports with fresh estimates, a practice the BBC said makes independent verification nearly impossible.
While Trump cited 3,100 Christian deaths from the Open Doors report, the same publication recorded 2,320 Muslims killed within the same period.
Open Doors senior research fellow, Frans Veerman, told the BBC, “Christians are still targeted, but increasingly some Muslims are targeted by Fulani militants.”
The organisation also listed “Fulani Terror Groups” among major perpetrators, responsible for nearly one-third of Christian deaths during the period reviewed.
The BBC’s wider findings concluded that most victims of jihadist attacks in Nigeria have actually been Muslims, contradicting claims of a deliberate Christian extermination.
Security analysts also told the broadcaster that Nigeria’s violence is driven by multiple factors, terrorism, banditry, farmer-herder conflict, and communal clashes, not systematic religious persecution.

Sudanese paramilitary group RSF agrees to humanitarian truce proposed by US-led mediator
November 7, 2025
The Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) says it has agreed to a humanitarian truce proposed by a US-led mediator group.
The RSF seized control of North Darfur’s besieged capital el-Fasher in late October after more than 18 months of fighting.
In a video released by the group on Thursday, RSF spokesperson, Al-Fateh Qurashi Bashir, said:
"In response to the aspirations and interests of the Sudanese people, the Rapid Support Forces affirm their agreement to enter the humanitarian truce proposed by the Quartet countries — the United States of America, the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the Arab Republic of Egypt. This agreement aims to address the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of the war and to enhance the protection of civilians through the completion of the provisions of the humanitarian truce agreement, enabling the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to all Sudanese people.”
The Sudanese army said it would only agree to a truce if the RSF withdraws from civilian areas and lays down its weapons.
Humanitarian crisis
The siege of el-Fasher created a desperate humanitarian situation for civilians trapped in the city. Aid workers say people were forced to live on animal feed and rainwater and shelter in holes for safety.
RSF fighters reportedly massacred hundreds of civilians on taking the city, engaging in ethnically and politically motivated summary executions.
Two years of fighting for control of Sudan has killed more than 40,000 people — a figure rights groups consider a significant undercount — and has created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis with over 14 million displaced. The capture of el-Fasher by the powerful Arab-led force raises fears that Africa’s third-largest nation may split again, nearly 15 years after oil-rich South Sudan gained independence following years of civil war.

Pakistan Launches New Attack on Afghanistan as Fresh Round of Talks Begins
By Fidel Rahmati
November 6, 2025
Pakistani forces reportedly launched a new cross-border assault on Afghanistan territory Thursday, coinciding with the start of renewed peace negotiations in Istanbul.
Afghan officials said Pakistani troops launched an attack in Spin Boldak on Thursday, coinciding with the start of key peace talks in Istanbul.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said Pakistani troops opened fire on Taliban forces in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar on Thursday evening, November 6, escalating tensions along the Afghanistan–Pakistan border.
Mujahid said Taliban fighters refrained from retaliating “out of respect for the negotiation team and to prevent civilian casualties.” He added that the incident violated the earlier agreement reached during talks to extend the ceasefire and avoid cross-border aggression.
Videos from the scene show heavy gunfire and residents fleeing the area in panic. Reports indicated that Pakistani border forces initiated the attack and fired several mortar rounds into Afghanistan territory.
No statement has yet been released by Pakistani officials. Eyewitnesses reported that several families from border villages left their homes fearing the clashes could intensify overnight.
The renewed border violence has caused widespread concern among local communities. Videos circulating online show women and children running from the area as gunfire echoes across the district.
Spin Boldak, one of the busiest and most sensitive crossings between Afghanistan and Pakistan, has repeatedly witnessed armed confrontations between the two sides in recent years.
The latest incident comes as Afghan and Pakistani delegations meet in Istanbul for the third round of peace talks aimed at maintaining the fragile ceasefire and reaching a long-term border security agreement.
Observers warn that continued skirmishes could jeopardize diplomatic efforts underway in Turkey, undermining hopes for de-escalation and regional stability.

The Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mohajote yesterday urged the Election Commission to ban the use of religion in election campaigns and ensure a peaceful voting atmosphere along with the safety of minority communities during the upcoming 13th national election.
Leaders of the organisation placed a seven-point demand during a meeting with the CEC at the EC headquarters in the capital. Mohajote Executive Secretary Palash Kanti Dey told reporters after the meeting that the commission agreed with their proposals and informed them that it was already working on these matters.
The Mohajote's seven-point demand includes strengthening security for minority homes, temples, and monasteries for 10 days before and after the election; deploying army during polls; banning campaigns and rallies at religious institutions; prohibiting use of religion in electioneering; suspending voting and launching investigations in constituencies facing attacks; and forming a central monitoring cell to ensure the safety of minority and women voters.

WHO Warns of Measles Surge in Afghanistan, Urges Urgent Child Vaccinations
By Fidel Rahmati
November 6, 2025
The World Health Organization has warned of a growing measles outbreak in Afghanistan, urging parents to urgently vaccinate children under five nationwide.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the risk of measles infection in Afghanistan is rising sharply this season and urged parents to vaccinate their children without delay.
In a statement issued on Thursday, November 6, WHO called on families to ensure that all children under five receive the free measles vaccine available at health centers across the country.
The agency said vaccination is the most effective way to prevent the spread of the highly contagious disease, which has already caused a rise in deaths among Afghanistan children in recent months.
WHO noted that malnutrition and limited access to healthcare have worsened the outbreak, leaving many children vulnerable to preventable diseases like measles.
Last week, health authorities in Nangarhar province launched a 10-day vaccination campaign as part of nationwide efforts to curb new infections and protect high-risk populations.
Afghanistan has witnessed repeated measles outbreaks in recent years, with health experts blaming declining vaccination coverage, displacement, and weak healthcare infrastructure for the resurgence.
International health officials warn that without sustained vaccination drives, the country risks another major epidemic, further straining an already fragile public health system.

Afghanistan to Face Iran in Key Futsal Match at Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh
By Fidel Rahmati
November 6, 2025
Afghanistan’s national futsal team will face regional powerhouse Iran in Riyadh today, aiming to prove its growing strength at the Islamic Solidarity Games.
Afghanistan’s national futsal team will take on powerhouse Iran on Thursday in Riyadh as part of the Islamic Solidarity Games, aiming to prove its growing strength on the Asian stage.
The match, scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Kabul time, marks a major test for Afghanistan, which is seeking to maintain momentum after its 9–5 victory over Tajikistan in the opening round.
Iran, one of Asia’s most decorated futsal teams, poses a formidable challenge. Historical records show Iran has dominated past encounters, including a narrow 4–3 win in their most recent meeting in Brazil.
Despite the odds, Afghanistan’s players say they are determined to play with discipline and resilience, viewing this game as a vital opportunity to gauge their progress against a regional giant.
The Islamic Solidarity Tournament serves as both a competition and a development platform for national teams to build technical depth and international experience. For Afghanistan, facing Iran represents a critical step in its journey toward higher competitive standards in Asian futsal.
Afghanistan sports analysts say the team’s confidence has been bolstered by the recent success of the country’s under-17 futsal squad, which defeated Iran in an earlier international event — a victory seen as symbolic of a new generation’s potential.
Observers believe that continued investment, coaching, and international exposure could help Afghanistan narrow the skill gap with elite teams like Iran, turning futsal into one of the nation’s most promising sports for regional recognition.

Jamaat warns of showdown in Dhaka
Nov 7, 2025
Jamaat-e-Islami yesterday warned that Dhaka could take on a "different look" on November 11 if the government fails to meet the party and its allies' five demands, as they plan to hold a grand rally that day.
"Before the capital turns into a sea of people, the government should accept the demands and show respect for the public aspiration reflected in the July charter. Otherwise, the scenes will be different," said Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar, addressing a gathering at the Matsya Bhaban intersection.
At another event, Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Syeed Abdullah Muhammad Taher said, "If the ghee doesn't come out with a straight finger, we'll bend it. But we want the ghee anyway. So, take the hint. No trickery. There must be a referendum before the national election."
The five demands of Jamaat and seven like-minded parties are issuance of an order to implement the July charter and holding a referendum within November; introducing the proportional representation system in both houses or the upper house in the next election; ensuring a level playing field; ensuring visible justice for all repressions, killings, and corruption committed by the "fascist" government; and banning the activities of the "dictatorial collaborator" Jatiya Party and the 14-party alliance.
Earlier, Jamaat and its allies announced they would submit a memorandum to Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus to press for their demands.
Around 11:00am, the parties took out separate processions and gathered at the Paltan intersection. Later, they marched towards the Jatiya Press Club. When the procession reached the Matsya Bhaban area, police put up barricades.
Afterwards, nine leaders from the eight parties went to the state guesthouse Jamuna to submit the memorandum to the chief adviser.
On their return from Jamuna, Porwar told journalists that Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan received the memorandum on behalf of Yunus. He said the adviser expressed the government's sincerity in resolving the political crisis.
At Paltan, leaders of Jamaat and like-minded parties said the referendum should be held first, even if the national election is delayed due to it.
There, Taher said the nation expects major political parties to sit together not only to discuss the July charter but also to determine how the next election will be held.
Islami Andolan Bangladesh's spokesperson Gazi Ataur Rahman said they would not accept the referendum and national polls on the same day.

We’re fighting for expatriates’ right to vote: Shafiqur
Nov 7, 2025
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman yesterday said there are "systemic obstacles" preventing expatriates from casting their votes. He said his party has submitted recommendations to the government to remove these barriers.
"We sent a delegation to the government yesterday [Wednesday] with recommendations to address the issue, and they assured us they would try," he said at a civic gathering in Sylhet city.
"I told expatriates many parties opposed their voting rights, saying they only needed to send remittances, but we fought for their right to vote."
He also said Jamaat lawmakers would not seek personal benefits from public office. "Our MPs will not accept government plots or tax-free cars. We will live as we do now," he said.
"The people will not vote for us to impose taxes on them, but to protect their rights. Our politics will succeed only if we can do that."
He said several Islamic and patriotic parties are already cooperating with Jamaat, and more have shown interest. "We will move forward with everyone," he said. "Others say they will form the government excluding Jamaat, but if we are elected, we will include them too."

Explosions at Jakarta School Mosque Injure 20 During Friday Prayers
Sukarjito, Gandhi Armansyah
November 7, 2025
Jakarta. Multiple explosions shook the mosque of State Senior High School 72 (SMA Negeri 72) in North Jakarta during Friday prayers, injuring at least 15 students and five teachers, police said.
The blasts occurred around 12:30 p.m. at the school, which is located within a Navy compound in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the incident.
According to witnesses, the explosion came from the rear section of the mosque’s main hall, sending worshippers scrambling for safety.
“The sermon had just started when we heard a loud blast,” said Budi Laksono, a mathematics teacher who was inside the mosque. “Smoke quickly filled the room. The students ran out -- some were crying, others fell in panic.”
Most victims suffered minor injuries from glass shards and sound shockwaves. The wounded were taken to the Kelapa Gading district clinic for initial treatment.
Shortly after the incident, Navy personnel and Jakarta Police officers cordoned off the area while the bomb squad conducted a full sweep of the site.
Initial inspections have not yet confirmed the cause of the explosion. Investigators are considering several possibilities, including an electrical short circuit or electronic device malfunction. However, they also discovered suspicious objects near the scene -- including components resembling a homemade explosive device, a remote control, and airsoft and revolver-type firearms.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and that all evidence will be examined by forensic and bomb-disposal experts.

PUTATAN, Nov 7 — Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan today confirmed that there will be no seat clashes between BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the 17th Sabah state election.
Mohamad, who is also Umno deputy president, said that although discussions within BN on seat allocations were still ongoing, both parties in the Madani government would not contest against each other.
“BN’s machinery must continue working until polling day on Nov 29 to ensure BN’s victory in the upcoming election,” he told reporters after attending a gathering with Kampung Contoh residents here yesterday.
The Election Commission has set Nov 29 as polling day, with nomination day on Nov 15 and early voting on Nov 25.
Meanwhile, Mohamad proposed that Putatan Umno Division chief Jeffrey Nor Mohamed be chosen as Umno’s candidate for the Tanjung Keramat state seat in the state polls.
Mohamad said Jeffrey Nor’s loyalty to the party and his efforts to rebuild Umno’s strength in Putatan made him a deserving candidate.
“We support Jeffrey Nor as the candidate for Tanjung Keramat due to the strong support from the local community, but we will wait for the official announcement from the leadership,” he said. — Bernama

No law degree needed? Singapore judge says AI could reshape who sits on the bench
By Malay Mail
07 Nov 2025
SINGAPORE, Nov 7 — Artificial intelligence (AI) could one day reshape Singapore’s courts to the point where judges may not even need formal legal training, according to Aidan Xu, who leads transformation and innovation in the judiciary.
In an interview with CNA, Xu said advances in AI may eventually allow people from other professional backgrounds — such as counsellors or engineers — to serve as judges, with technology supplying the legal expertise.
“There is a strong likelihood that you won’t need a lawyer to be a judge,” he told the Singapore-based news outlet today, stressing that a fully AI judge or lawyer remains unlikely in the near future.
“The human element will be an important part of the role of a judge, in deciding cases, in deciding who to believe, in deciding what outcome should follow,” he was quoted as saying.
Singapore’s courts have in recent years rolled out several AI tools, including a summary generator developed with US start-up Harvey AI for Small Claims Tribunals and algorithms that predict outcomes in motor accident cases.
Another initiative is a translation tool used to assist self-represented litigants.
Xu said the judiciary is also testing AI-enabled transcription systems and hopes to make them affordable for court users.
But he also cautioned against overreliance on technology.
“And importantly, that they see AI is only a tool, and they cannot use it as a shortcut.
“So we want them to understand that they must continue to fulfil their functions as judges, judicial officers or administrators in the right way, and they don’t click on an AI button and generate (an) answer and just pass that off as their work,” he was quoted as saying.
He added that Singapore’s judiciary continues to train officers to understand AI’s limits and ensure the technology remains a tool and not a shortcut.
