NEWAGEISLAM TV: Islamisation Of Pakistan’s History

(Translation from Urdu, New Age Islam Edit Desk)

I think that we have put many things about the initial movement for Pakistan under cover. Today the section that considers Pakistan a totally Muslim state or a state carved out in the name of Islam based on the slogan La ilaha il Allah is called more patriotic than others. There are references for that. And the section rejects all those who adopt the point of view that Pakistan was established under a secular leadership and the people who were responsible for the formation of Pakistan, or the organisations or groups were responsible for it had a very clear point of view that Pakistan will be a state where the people of all the religions will enjoy total freedom and there will be no discrimination against them.

But the tragedy with us here is that we have compiled the history of Pakistan anew and we have Islamised the history of Pakistan as all the institutions were nationalised during the Bhutto’s regime. And all the people and all the organisation, all the schools of thought that had disagreed with Qaid-e-Azam and his colleagues not only interpret the movement for Pakistan from all aspects but also do not agree to give any space to other religions in Pakistan.  When they are reminded that when the movement for Pakistan was at its peak, all the organisations, political and religious organisations that preferred religion and were identified with religion were opposed to Pakistan and we have proofs of that.

For example, Jamiat-e-Ulema Hind to Ahrar to Jama’at Islami, all the representative organisations of Muslims of the subcontinent were all opposed to the partition. Be it the Khilafat Movement or the Jama’t Islami, or the Ahrar or Jamiat Ulema Hind, Deoband, their point of view is very clear. Their publications, their writings, their movements are all before us. So it is a somewhat difficult issue. We have tried to forget all the developments, the history and have constructed a new history. We have tried to do this.  This history has already been compiled in our country. And even today those who speak on the TV or write in the editorials of the newspapers have agreed on one point that the point of view of Qaid-e-Azam was very clear and it is that Pakistan was established for Muslims and Muslims alone and the rest of the people will not enjoy the rights equal to Muslims nor can they be considered equal to them.

OK, fine, but what was achieved out of it? We formed the term Pakistan theory in 1956 and after that we formed Nazirya-e-Pakistan Trust (Pakistan Theory Trust). After that we tried to use the Two Nation Theory in Pakistan and then we compiled a new history under its influence. The way the social sciences and the historical and political events are taught in our schools to our children makes all those who are not Muslims appear our enemies. There is no doubt that Pakistan has many differences with India. We have fought wars. It does not mean that every Hindu of India wants our ruin and is an enemy of Pakistan or is always busy in hatching conspiracies against Pakistan. We did not rest at that. We are angrier with Israel than with Arabs, the Arabs who are engaged in disputes with Israel. Their collective attitude about Israel is not so rigid as is ours. And I think it is unfortunate on our part that instead of opening up the mind of our children, we have closed it. We have nurtured narrow-mindedness on the national level.

I want to present an example. If you have watched the TV plays of Ziaul Haque and later period, you will notice that the character of the Hindu in those plays is a religious man. His whole image is that of a religious man. But it is shown that he is always busy hatching conspiracies, wanting to kill Muslims. His life and death depends on killing the Muslims. He is the most hated man in the eyes of a religious Muslim. Through this, we have vitiated the atmosphere which could have become an intellectual one. What have we achieved through this? I think that we have achieved nothing except that we have made life hell even for Muslims having a different point of view than ours.
