The Brave Women of Karbala Who Kept Its Message Alive

By Afroz Khan, New Age Islam

23 June 2026

The women of Karbala displayed extraordinary patience, courage, and faith after losing their loved ones. From Karbala to Damascus, they endured immense suffering yet remained steadfast. Through their resilience and powerful voices, they preserved the message of Karbala and exposed the truth of oppression to the world.

Key Points:

·         Women of Karbala showed great patience and courage.

·         They endured captivity and hardships with faith.

·         Janab Zainab (R.A.) led and protected the survivors.

·         Their voices exposed the truth of Karbala.

·         They kept Imam Hussain’s message alive.

The status that the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R. A.) and his companions holds in Islam and across the world is matched by the patience, gratitude, and resilience shown by the mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters connected to those martyrs.

Even after losing their loved ones on the battlefield of Karbala, these women displayed remarkable courage and patience. It was these very women who brought the horrific oppression committed in Karbala before the world and carried forward its message. Despite losing their dearest family members, they stood firmly against tyranny and injustice.

From Karbala to Damascus, they were subjected to immense suffering. They were chained and taken as captives to Damascus, yet their courage and patience never broke.

When Imam Hussain's caravan set out for Karbala, it included approximately 20 to 40 women. On the 9th of Muharram, when Imam Hussain (R. A.)gave his companions permission to leave the battlefield, not a single companion abandoned him, nor did any of the women advise their family members to do so. Although everyone knew what would happen on the 10th of Muharram, they all chose to remain steadfast and stay alongside Imam Hussain (R.A.)

These were some of the brave women who were part of Imam Hussain’s caravan:

1. Janab Zainab bint Ali (R.A.)

She was the most prominent woman present in Karbala. She was the daughter of Hazrat Ali (R.A.) and Hazrat Fatima (R.A.) , and the elder sister of Imam Hussain (R.A.). She sent both of her sons to fight alongside Imam Hussain (R. A.) and bore their martyrdom with patience while continuing to support and encourage her brother.

After all the men were martyred and the tents were set on fire, she protected the women and children from the flames. Along with Imam Zain-ul-Abideen, (the only surviving male member of the family), she took charge of the entire caravan.

Standing fearlessly in the court of Ibn Ziyad, Hazrat Zainab (R.A.) declared:

"We are the Ahl al-Bayt. Oppression has been committed against us, but we will never surrender."

She also delivered a powerful and moving sermon in the court of Yazid.

She proclaimed:

"Do whatever you wish, but our message can never be erased."

Her sermon became the voice of the oppressed and exposed the atrocities and betrayal that had taken place in Karbala. It revealed the truth of the oppression committed there and shook the foundations of Yazid’s authority.

Eventually, Yazid was compelled to release the captives and allow them to return to Madinah.

Janab Zainab bint Ali (R.A.) is often remembered as the “Lioness of Karbala” and “Batalat-ul-Karbala”.

2. Umm-e-Rubab (R.A.)

She was the wife of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R. A.) and the mother of Ali Asghar, the youngest martyr of Karbala.

She entrusted her thirsty infant son to Imam Hussain (R. A.) so that he might receive water, but Yazid’s army martyred the six-month-old child with an arrow. Umm-e-Rubab endured this tragedy with immense patience.

After the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (R.A.), she remained with the caravan of captives and endured great hardships throughout the journey to Damascus.

Umm-e-Rubab, who lost both her husband and her son in Karbala. Carrying this immense grief, she survived for only one more year.

3. Hazrat Umm-e-Kulsoom (R.A.)

Hazrat Umm-e-Kulsoom (R.A.) was the younger sister of Janab Zainab (R.A.) and remained by her side throughout the ordeal.

When the women of the caravan were being taken through the streets of Kufa in chains, she addressed the people of Kufa and rebuked them for remaining silent in the face of oppression. She reminded them that raising one's voice against injustice is a moral responsibility.

4. Hazrat Sakina (R.A.)

Hazrat Sakina was the young daughter of Imam Hussain (R.A.). She was of a very tender age at the time and endured immense suffering despite her childhood.

After witnessing the hardships of Karbala and captivity, she passed away at a very young age.

5. Umm-e-Farwa (R.A.)

She was the wife of Imam Hasan (A.S.) and accompanied Imam Hussain’s caravan along with her son, Hazrat Qasim.

Hazrat Qasim was only thirteen years old at the time. Imam Hussain (R. A.)was initially reluctant to permit him to enter the battlefield. When Qasim repeatedly expressed his desire to fight, he approached his mother. Umm-e-Farwa then produced a letter written by Imam Hasan (R.A.), which helped secure permission for Qasim to join the battle.

She knew that her son would also attain martyrdom, yet she courageously supported his decision and sent him to the battlefield.

6. Umm-e-Wahab (R.A.)

Umm-e-Wahab was the wife of Abdullah ibn Umair Kalbi, one of the earliest martyrs of Karbala.

After her husband was martyred, she herself advanced towards the enemy armed only with a stick.

She was later martyred as well and is remembered as the first female martyr associated with the tragedy of Karbala.

Imam Hussain (R. A.) himself prayed for Umm-e-Wahab.

After the martyrdom of the men, it was these women who kept the message of Karbala alive. Had they not done so, the events of Karbala might have been suppressed, and the oppression committed there may never have been fully exposed to the world.

After returning to Madinah, under the leadership of Janab Zainab (R.A.), these women began holding gatherings of remembrance, a tradition that continues during Muharram to this day. In these gatherings, they narrated the events of Karbala exactly as they had witnessed them.

These women remain timeless examples of patience, resilience, the defence of truth, and the courage to stand against oppression. Their stories continue to inspire generations today and will continue to inspire people for years to come.
